Thanks, I don't need a lot of apps or games, I think I'll stick with 2.3.5 for this phone, as I think I would also loose the lower Sense deck on Home screen (the one with three buttons - Apps, Phone, Personalize). The one thing that's bugging me though is that I can't seem to find any good Office app compatible with this version. I've tried several on Google Play and nothing seems to work - either incompatible, or won't install correctly. And also the lack of a mobile data usage manager (without installing a 3rd party app).

u would loose the ability to download stuffs from htc hub and everything else is pretty the same, but not as simple as gingerbread. Its worth upgrading if u plan to install lots of apps such as games like temple run 2,subway surfers and many more apps which were not available on giberbread.

Ive had this phone for just under 3 years now..... has fallen so many times, screen still alive. my power button is a bit broken. did the whole rooting thing as well . there are a few good custom roms out there. really robust phone. but after about a year your battery doesnt last more than 10 hours or doing nothing. still a really good build

HTC Desire series is the worst phone that will put you in great distress. The system built-in Desire series are such that they collapse leaving a blank screen and no option to make a comeback. You are left switching off the mobile by pulling out battery and they powering it on again. This has been the case with my phone, which is HTC Desire. I went to the service station, they have asked for 3 days time then came back and said that this is a software problem. And it was not just me. There were 10s of people with the same problem in HTC service center. If you want to really be stupid, go buy this piece. Else, do some better investment.

I've had this phone from contract in Nov 2011. It's still going but is showing its age now so I'm buying another handset on a sim only deal. The good news if you are still interested in this phone is the screen resolution, the stability, the rear cam in good light, the sd slot and of course the price (this was the flagship HTC phone in 2011/12 & now it goes for a song). The bad points are its now a bit slow for modern apps & internet, the battery is underpowered, it's not 4G, the front camera is poor & the flash on rear camera is unatural. Still a bargain though. I'm sticking with android but mugging off HTC for my next phone as the camera on the One M8 looks rubbish. I'm going with LG G2 as it ticks all the boxes I need. Good luck with your phone purchase guys!

I also bought a NEW desire S here in Iran and it not refurbished. Everything is ok and i have upgraded it to ICS and its working like a charm. This is my 3rd Desire S( i had sold the other 2). But I am always attracted to this phone because of its unibody aluminum design and good hardware. I just wish it could have supported twin Sims. By the way the battery life is above average for a touch screen and it has improved greatly by the ICS upgrade.

Don believe that set was new, it should have been refurbished, I also facing same card issue, in 2nd hand set, try to restore factory setting and install new or another card format if detected after restoring and if that works use the card which u wanna use, good luck

I own this phone and it's good overall, but its battery life with Wi-Fi enabled is a joke. Apart from that, the biggest problems come from poor software which I solved by installing a custom Android distribution. The phone's hardware is quite capable but it should have more on-board storage memory for its price.

Have you tried replacing your battery with a new one? I replace mine every year or so. You can find replacements with 5 euros(=7$) in online stores. You could also try replacing your usb charger with a new one (1-2 euros) Normally it shouldn't take you more than 2-3 hours to charge and should make you through a whole day. 3G is consuming a lot. Enable it only when necessary.

This is 720p not 1080p screen that's where the problem lies. I have 36 months using this phone on Gingerbread it works seamsless with no scratch. I'm reluctant to upgrade. I still recommend it

Goto -Settings- Call Settings-Cell Broad Cast setting - Disable it ...you'll not receive ..location messages....I know how irritating it'll be....and whenever you restart your mobile please make sure you've to Disable ..Cell Broad cast ...because it'll go back to its original state when you restart your Mobile....:-)

I have the desire s for 18 months, I have 2 batteries (one original and one Goki battery for back up). Both of them using for around the same number of times. Few weeks ago the phone started to shut off 5-6 times a day while using the original battery. I though the phone is dying or out of RAM. So I reset the phone, but doesn't work. When I use the Goki battery, the phone is normal (no shut off). Therefore, I assume the original battery gone bad. (remark: during the 18 month, I have changed the screen for 2 times)

That's the great example and concept how smartPHONE should be CellPhonish (not damn notebook). Perfect ergonomics, fits in a pocket, easy navigate with one hand (althought my fingers are thick and and short compare to hand), great performance, video calls on skype, good 5mp camera, love that back cover is rubberized, that prevents from sliding on surfaces, informative HTC GUI etc. Drawbacks: Lack of storage, could be more then 3 physicall buttons (e.g. switch songs when it lays in a pocket). I wish to find more, but damn, I can't. If someone knows such a great smartphone, with size and performance, drop comment bellow.

Poor call reliability. I have been cut off on about 30% of all calls with this phone. Its really poor. The rest of it is pretty good and its small, but 2 years and the number of bad calls. I generally start my call with anybody warning them that we might get cut off. Avoid.

I already using Desire S since Dec 2011. At the first 3 months, I already root this. For now, I'm using Desire XS custom ROM, plus flashing some Beta ver. of Butter Project via bootloader. Now I can say that my device was smooth and very powerful for my daily driver. Using email,phone,twitter, everything is runs great. Happy to say that this device is perfect value for my money. It is still functioning fine but there are times when it overheats during conversations, or it actually gets unresponsive while trying to make a call or to answer it. Mixed view abt this phone... after 6 months of usage the touch broke down.. finally had to get the screen replaced.. :( using ICS official update..lags alot.. slow.. takes ages to open up applications... when i took out the memory card, the phine got faster, even though i have an 8gb card that has 2gb free i just got the screen changed, havent opened the phone yet.. funny thing is i stabbed the original screen( the corning gorilla glass, the one that had to come out) with all my might and anger bt it wouldnt break :P used a pointy edge knife :P fun really OVer all the phone is just a medium... planning to buy galaxy GRAND now.. saving up afew bucks for it.. I have this phone since 2 years (bought already used). I ran through GB and then ICS with a Developper RUU(HTC-Dev site) which was really buggy and now i'm on the custom ROM ViperSAGA with full sense 4+ (ported from HOX) since a year and the phone is ok not so fast but entirely usable everyday. Unfortunately the battery only lasts 12 hours in low usage and 6 hours in full usage. And really sad the segment of this phone don't exists anymore, there are no more phones which are Powerfull and Small ! (sorry for bad english)

ICS upgrade is not difficult to do if you research it thoroughly. Battery life improved after update, but one loses ones warranty. Some application data can be lost after upgrade - I lost some data for a notepad application. On balance the upgrade was worth the effort.

My Desire S will turn 2 this June and I LOVE my cell! At the time, it was the only phone in the Sub 25 k (Rs.) price bracket with a greater than 512MB RAM and hence my logical choice!! The solid Aluminum case has taken many a beatings and has come out unphased!! The drops include an abrupt meeting with the Road while I was riding my bike! The Gorilla Glass does well to protect the screen and after 2 yrs of rough abuse, has only 1 visible scratch to show!! I recently updated my cell to ICS 4.1 (legally) and the 768 MB RAM is doing just fine!! No lag in using the cell or running the latest Apps! The only negatives are the Camera & the battery, with the pictures appearing a bit blurred when transferred to the comp. Using 3G in India drains the battery faster, with a 5 to 6 hour life on heavy usage. I would still recommend this cell today, as it is a VERY VALUE-FOR-Money cell!

It is all about keeping your phone tasks and ram clear along with turning off wifi and bluetooth when not needed and reducing brightness. Well, you will not find an official update for this phone to android 4.2, but you can install a costum ROM. For desire s, I would recommend to use the JellyTime. Look for some tutorials on the internet. PS: Don't do s-off, just go to htcdev to unlock your bootloader, it's safer this way.

First you need to download ICS software from Select the "WWE" version which is 404 MB file. Extract it after downloading is finished. Then install HTC sync on your computer (in case if you don't have it) from After installing HTC sync connect your phone to your pc and select "HTC sync" on your mobile. Open that ICS file and follow the instructions. It's very easy. You can read that pdf file for instructions which comes with that ICS file.

If public wifi like in malls, maybe u need to log in to something first so that you can use internet. Also, office wifi networks usually has proxy and server settings which u need to get from the i..t dept. Otherwise u wud just be connected but cant browse.

What kind of wifi connection? Office, mall, home? If home just forget the network from your phone, restart the router then try to connect again. If still not working, check if you will be able to connect to other wifi connections. If you can connect then the security settings or compatibility of the router must have something to do with it. Ifyou cant connect to all wifi networks, then maybe it is the phone that is wrong. Reset the phone but this will delete all the data stored. If still not working then have it repaired.

Nope, its not an RUU like update. You need first unlock your phone and then update using a recovery module :)... Its easy if you read well. BTW - forget about the 'official' ICS update... don't see 'em coming!! Also, once you get your hands on a good ROM there - you will see how much the stock ROM sucked :)

If you want to upgrade your Htc Desire S go to htcdev.com and go to kernal source code select the device and android version 4.0 leave the carrier and region blank and got for the 404.0 MB one that has WWE (world wide edition) and download when that is finished then extract it and with your htc desire s plugged in run the software.

yes you can send songs/pics through blutooth.just use file explorer.install from google market/google play.then enable blutooth from setting/discoverable.search other devise.then pair.after pairing go to file explorer open the folder in which you have song long press the desire song/press share/through bluetooth.thats it.

This is only phone in this range where you will get Good RAM, Gorilla glass, Front CAM,3.7" Screen etc. With the same specification you may also check Motorola Defy range it will cost you around 13,000 with 512 RAM. But I preferred HTC.

Repeatedly ask for password if you try to open the application which is locked through App Locker. 4) Application like "Money control" crashes every time when you open that 5) "Temple Run" and "Pro Evolution soccer 12" games running sluggish post update 6) More nos. of messages and contacts nos. turns in to the sluggish operation of the same 7) You can't change the Lock Screen 4 Icons (If somebody have some idea then please share) Above mentioned all were working fine on Gingerbread earlier. I'm really disappointed! I have a problem with speakers, that`s mean my phone doesn't ring anymore, only on vibrations. Also I cant play any multimedia file because of speakers. Why I'm disappointed? i did not remove the memory card when i updated. nothing happened as it is an external memory and hence, wont be affected.

sadly, the only way you can update your desire s to jb is by using custom roms. desire s is an old model which for sure htc will not provide JB update. we hardly got the ics update, what more with jb.

what connection are you using? if it is an office or mall, you may need to sign into a website to be able to access the internet. OR... it may have some proxy settings. try also using another phone to see if you can connect. coz if not, then it may be the connection itself that is not allowing you to browse. you can also check if you will be able to connect to other wifis.

already running 3.6 with android 4.0 since way before and im from PH sir. go to the link below: on the filter, choose desire s. then look for the file below: HTC WWE RUU v4.0 404.0 MB download the file onto your PC. you need to have htc sync for you to be able to update. when you download the 404MB file, there is a guide in pdf format. just follow the instructions. you can download htc sync at the link below: updating saves battery, ram usage is less as well (up to 200mb free compared to 100+ before the update) and it is worth updating. not having problems with the update. but the locations widget can only update at the first place you search for. apart from that, no issues.

I was expecting an OTA ice cream sandwich upgrade but HTC let us down. i went on with the upgrade anyway Everything is working normally and here are the Pros : 1- the battery life is much better compared to when i was on 2.3.5. I used to get 2 days before , now the phone runs for 3 days without charging and normal use. 2- i guess ICS is really using all the resources of the Adreno chipset. Thats why the screen is more colorful , more lively and better color rendering could be seen. 3-the camera interface is much improved and now all the important setting u need ,are right where u can see them. 4- some of the widgets have changed and they are more user friendly. Cons: 1- the phone is a bit laggy when u compare it with 2.3.5. but its not a heartbreaker. 2- the screen brightness sensor appears to be dimming the display to an uncomfortable level in all light conditions. i had to shut it off and set the screen brightness manually to 50 percent. 3- the Upgarde is WWE and though it supports farsi and arabic fonts , but builtin farsi/arabic keyboard is missing. so i had to install jellybean keyboard application. Thats it. I hope this helps people who cant decide on upgrading.

In inbox message, when there is a mobile number or a web address written in the message, I am unable to click on it in order to dial that number or go to that web address as I was doing this prior to update to ics. Hi Guys, I updated my desires S with ICS. Its working fine. But I have a problem with the weather application. All the times after unlocking my phone, I see my weather application couldnt able to detect my location. Each time I need to refresh my weather application by going into it. Earlier the weather update would be available even I didnt connect to internet means my old weather will be available & when I connect to the internet it will automatically check the weather status. Hey I got ur problem. Not sure what I replied to ypur earlier posts.No need to extract. Just open HTC sync & connect your device in sysnc mode. Double click and open the instructions pdf from ur compressed download. Now double click the update file. It will detect your device & it will be updated.

@Payman There is no OTA update available for HTC Desire S now in near future. You have install ICS 4.0.4 manually by downloading the RUU (ROM UPGRADE UTILITY its 400mb file) from HTCDev website. Refer my earlier post for detailed information

After installing the ics 4.0.4, my blutooth device is not working properly with my desire s phone. It's pairing but controlers are not working. Phone calls are not coming to blutooth device and not able to pic calls from blutooth device. Also music controlers like play ,pause,next buttons are not responding. It depends on the internet APN setting which the service provider offers. If you are using GRPS it obviously disconnect during call... but it wont happen in 3G internet...

Has any one faced a problem of Facebook contacts not syncing when upgrading to ICS. I`m facing a peculiar problem that all my contacts are syncing to other applications like linkedin, whatsapp, gmail etc but not with Facebook. Please let me know if any one has a fix. upgrade of htc desire s to ics 4.0.4 is rockingly awesome! i don't recognize the gingerbread firmware after the upgrade, very far from the previous version when it comes to UI. You'll love it and never regret upgrading yours now. You won't even try to use different home launcher because this the stock launcher of the new version is fantastic! only one flaw i have found in my upgrade though, the htc sense for the weather don't have "sounds" at all. :( i'm guessing htc missed this one. i hope they provide the ota update for this one.

The people at HTC just dont seem to care about customers. By claiming the phone will get the ICS upgrade they played a cheap trick to sell all the remaining desire s they had in stock . Now that they have sold out ,they say " users will have the best experience with the android 2.3 and no OTA will be available. In the Application List>Click on People application> Click on 2nd Capacitive key (3 horizontal line)> Now select View option> and select which contacts you want to display i.e. Google, Facebook, SIM , Phonebook etc. > Hit the done button. The desire s only has 596MB ram. But it is also compatible with the 850MHZ Next G/3G+ networks from Telstra and Vodafone respectively in Australia. The phone is limited to Telstra in Australia but is not locked to that network so it can be used on any network.

I've been using this phone since its early release date (March-April 2011). I encounter some lag specially when I installed a number of application. Since I bought this I believe I have a factory reset for 3 times due to lag issue. My last reformat was already 4 months now and I didn't encounter any lag because I never installed lots of application. Common problem here is the SenseUI, it tends to crash whenever you browse for a long time. I believe memory management of GB + Sense UI is poor. I hope it gets better when ICS comes. Camera of this is not already in its prime as there is already good phone with decent camera available in the market at the lower price. But overall it is still a good buy specially for those first time to use android, but for the upgrade, there so much phone to choose from. I'm looking for a non-HTC for now as (as an upgrade) they created a phone that I don't want to support (One Series). Because they created a iphone-like feature (built-in battery and memory, micro sim). I know that this is not a big deal for all, but for me this is the one factor that I consider in choosing a phone. That is why my last HTC would be this Desire S. :)

@ Moshe. buy data bundle instead of using airtime. My internal memory is 64mb n my external memory is 2.8. therefore, I went to Play Store to download an app that amounts to 1.54mb and I was told that my memory is insufficient. can that be possible?

I strongly recommend you not to purchase the HTC Desire S. I have been using this phone for the last few months and it has brought me a lot of grief! Ever since I upgraded the android/htc sense automatically from within the phone, the phone restarts continuously for upto 8 hours(when I am sleeping!). This can only be resolved when I remove the memory card from the phone. I have gone to numerous forums and tried a lot of trouble-shooting but to no avail. My last option would be throw the phone against the wall and break it, but that would be a painless death for it! So I'm gonna try and use the last-but-one option : a factory reset.

@ Moshe. I haven't tried it I often send pictures. Nonetheless, Play Store & HTC Sense they both consume lot of data n that makes me sad. I encourage you to exchange your airtime into data bundle they can last much more than airtime. HTC 4 Life... One X here I come...

You can use samsung earbud... not so sure about sony... i hv try htc earpiece on samsung, and samsung earbud on htc. No problem at all...:)

Desire S is trash. Constant freezing and rebooting for no reason even after factory reset and 4 times one-to-one exchange. Not recommended

Don't ever get Desire S. It sucks! I got one and is regretting ever since. Reboot and freezing issues even after factory reset. Sent for repair 4 times and still the same. I used to like HTC but now i would recommend Samsung.

Don't ever buy this phone. It really sucks. Send for repair 4 times. It will freeze or reboot itself even with no app installed (factory reset). Sending reports to HTC will not help. This will be my last HTC phone. Really regret getting it.

(In Souht Africa)when i send videos through Whatsapp it takes about R12 or more to send and other internet connections takes more airtime than usual, can anybody assist about this?

Hey Nicky i think u go for desire S. Desrie s has front facing camera that u can v.calling from skype, its nice in look, size is ok & u know almost all features r same in htc's & yes new is availble . Anyways & one v has slim body, pixels are more as desire s & its has ice sandwich so its upgrated mobile but both has same camera so go desire S bcoz it has video calling on skype .. then go with inicredible. the 2 phones are exactly the same. the only difference: 1. incrdible 8mp cam vs. 5mp on desire s 2. screen in incrdible is 4in vs. 3.7 in desire s 3, battery life in desire s is better than incredible s because all of the internals are the same. battery is the same but incredible has bigger screen. i had a desire s before and my friend has an incredible s. so i know almost anything about the two. if i were in your situation, iw ould definitely buy incredible s for the better camera and bigger screen.

this happened to me as well. what i did was unchecked background data at settings > accounts & sync. i only check it if i will be using the play store. the problem disappeared then went back a few days after. i then reset the phone. the problem disappeared and my phone was back to normal. also i discovered that if the weather is cold or the phone is near the aircon, tendency is the phone gets hot and battery drains. i think the phone has a mind of its own that if its cold, it will make itself hot. i move the out of the room with aircon then the phone gets on and battery stops draining. also, in network settings, try to set it to gsm only so it'ss save battery life. turn it on only when you will be using your operator's internet connection.

How do you make Conference Call & download an advanced music app on Play Store? Guys I think Gingerbread will surpass ICS just as Frovo did to Gingerbread don't raise up your hopes too high. So far SE & Samsung are struggling to bring robust and strong new software to their products. It's good for HTC to wait a bit for the completion of the new software. Good things comes to those who wait... Well Done HTC I amply recommend this phones to smart & intelligent people...
