i used to check for ice-cream sandwich update daily(tab 8.9 3G), it always showed no updates available, had also checked using Samsung kies. then i read somewhere on youtube, that i should FACTORY RESET my tab and then use kies to check for update, and now ive been enjoying ice-cream sandwich ever since. hope this helps anyone still using honeycomb. i've upgraded my tab 8.9 to cfw jellybean 4.2.2 cyanogenMod last month..so far so good..i've installed modem i9103XXLQ3 to make a call..if it not, u just only make for ussd..but there are some bugs specially if u using for making a call, if ur display is off, then ur tablet will be on mute/no sound...but there are some apps to deal with it, just download DislpayOn from google play...u can read the instruction from xda-developers, how to root,install cfw and modem..good luck!anyway i'm rudi from indonesia, sorry if my english not good...

I finally gave up using my tablet. The processor never seem to keep up with jerky response and non-reactive screen interaction. I have to continuesly clear the memory. This device for one needs more RAM and possibly a faster CPU. Sadly my three year old iPad outperforms this device

If you are not going to root the phone then you wont have the latest android. This means no turning off the 3G without apps etc. If it's just wifi that you want, try the Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7310 instead. That's the wifi only model.

You can insert a sim card. However, you can't make calls over GSM network. You can only send sms and mms or use the internet on 2G OR 3G Network using the sim card..

Since I bougth it I NEVER had a single system update neither via OTA nor Kies. The second is about the specs posted here, it says it's a GSM phone.. how I can use it as GSM phone.. only data works... if I try to call to the table I just got a call failure tone..and where is the app to make calls? My experience: XWLP INU (ICS) THIS TAB CAN PLAY 1080p VIDEOS IN DiVX ONLY, that too with a medium bit rate. In high bit rate ones, buffering seems a problem, but if you watch the video straight away then its OK. ICS Update makes this TAB really nice, the Touchwiz interface is just like S3 & other ICS devices of Samsung. During update, codec packs would be installed on the device making it capable of any video under 720p & H.264 MP4/DiVX 720p & Only DiVX 1080p in the system player. However in MX Player, any video till 720p is played in SW & HW+ modes. However if you want 1080p, then you should convert to DiVX.

sorry the version is 4.1.2 I you can write jb.4.1 for p7300 it should lead you I right direction and I recommend it it is fast flawless and the battery lasts even longer.It is like new tablet.I'm writing this on my p7300 and it has been 12 hours on battery (8h.of sleep)and 4hours of browsing and game playing and the battery is 74℅

there is an interface device that you can buy from Samsung, you can plug in a usb flash drive or an SD/SDHC card. Haven't tried plugging in an external HD though.

Upgrading is relatively simple. Go to Settings Select About Device Press Update Device Make sure that your deviceis plugged into power to ensure continuos power supply. However there is no possibility of making GSM or 3G video calls. Its a tablet. Not a phone. You could try using skype, or any of the other apps that provide voice/video chat over the internet.

You have to upgrade to 3.2.1 or 3.2 both are the same but to order to access the phone cabalities you have to use android software upgrade supported by google not to make the upgrade through OTA from device, as when make upgrade through the tablet the upgrade can not change access cabilties which means that samsung is locked this feature is system root files, so when you make it only the new changes take effect but you did not change root cababities You must do the upgrade using you PC and following the following steps Install upgrade tools (prefered to use linux system) Install open source software upgrade version from google official site Then connect you tablet Shut down your tablet Connect the usb cable Open software upgrade tools Press power button for a while and do not realse until a meesage appears on your pc with software version type Press an icon upgrade at your software pc Then upload system root files Take care to make backup from system root files Press upgrade to all androind cablities Then wait around 45 minutes depending upon your internet speed Please make sure that you battery are fully charged at lease 90% otherwise your device will be lost. Make sure that you do this steps well otherwise i advice not take a risk to make the following upgrade All the previous steps are available for honey comb 3.2 and ice cream sandwitch 4.0, 4.1

Yes you CAN make phone calls as normal, it just didn't ship with a dialer. I am having regular GSM network phone calls and even some video-calls if you wish. You can either get a 3rd party dialer app from the market (as I did), or use your contacts list for initiating calls.

just bought a usb on the go adaptor for my sgt8.9, it's a very nice accessory i can transfer photos from sd cards of digital/slr cameras directly to my tablet for fb uploading - tested 3 types of sd cards - regular. mini and micro sd - the tablet recognizes the cards fast once inserted on the usb adaptor.

Got this device for Christmas. Really great device, very portable. Tablets are type of devices that are supposed to fill in between a phone and a laptop. So it all depends on the purpose. This device is functional and useful. Productivity applications in this are available and preloaded too. Downsides are that certain productivity apps are not practical without a keyboard dock and possible a mouse. Android, would be a good OS if it didn't crash much! Don't get me wrong, the OS is great and functional. But the apps + widget + live wallpapers can put cause incompatibilities and crashes. Overall a great device in a slim device.

@ Hopeday: Perhaps you should contact your network operator, since this tablet does support calls via 2G/3G. So stop scaring other people off ^^, you probably don't have a plan from your ISP that allows you to make calls.

Just bought it. Have mixed feeling, what i dont like - 1. the sluggish touchwiz ui especialy in landscape mode, 2. No mass storage mode when connect to pc (wtf). What i like - thank god the sluggish part only affect the ui and not the entire system, web browser still darn fast.

sorry but i really dont know how to contact with GSMARENA admins. on preview video of p7300 3g, UI is different, there are no music hub or IM (social hub premium app) and app icons are different. and they installed a 3. party app for dialer (DIALER@BAR) and made calls on video but in actual devices this app doesnt work, "voice call, video call or sms" icons dont appear on contacts! if Admins still have this device, can they upload that rom? and i hope admins contacted with samsung about their misleading marketing policy:) thanks

hi guys. i have p7300b 3g, bought from thailand and i also have those accessories for usb flash memory + memory cards and writes on its box that supports "up to 32gb memory cards and flash memories" but no support for external HDDs. it even works with printers and cameras. i tried my sgs i9000 on mass storage mode and samsung hdd 500gb but not working and shows a message on screen about "unsupported device which needs powersupply" or something like that, anyway not working.

Because it can read flash drive doesn't mean all capacity, I read somewhere the maximum it can read is 32GB. I could be wrong, but I sure I have seen it somewhere. Even without reading it, I would not believe this will support up to 500GB, that is huge for a gadget like this.

i'm really ok with the tablet not able to make calls, it can send sms/mms and i think that's good enough, i can go online using packet data connection GPRS/EDGE/3G, and i think the tab is LTE ready, not sure about this. the sd card slot issue... well, i'm planning to buy a samsung usb adaptor that can be used to connect memory storage peripherals, if in case i bloated the 16Gigabytes capacity. i think this tablet looks prettier than the ipad, it's thin, light, just the right sized tablet for me. the screen resolution is so crisp i can read the tiniest letters.

To Art, we just download the dialler apps called Tablet Calling and which you could find other similar but so far we only tried this apps. Its works like regular phone. For info our we buy in panama which is wifi w/ 3G and we are using it Costa Rican local Sim Cardon 3G network..

@tikru Let ppl who have the tablet say their views, from the way you talk, u don't possess this 8.9 version. I have the 3G type and I'm saying u CANNOT make voice call with. you can only use skype, nimbuzz to call. it was supposed to have the call features but was disabled just before release, some say could be returned during ice cream updates. it is also true that it has no memory card slot but it can read your flash with an adapter which is available in many stores, just ordered my from amazon.

Probably you can use 3rd party apps like GrooVe IP to make calls, but still you need to have WiFi connection or Data connection. But its still worth it.

I have a samsung 8.9 3g,just got it last week.. and i must say im very very impressed. All its applications are working & they serve their purpses wellit has a sim card slot for norma-sized sim cards.. not microsim. So i cn still use it as a phone with regular sims from any part of the world,even for roaming simcards..Sad to say it has no sd card slot,my 32gb mem runs quickly nonetheless.phone calls i make via nimbuzz,a program included in the many free programs in android market.And i bet there are dialer programs we cn install as well. The wifi is fantastic,spots signals quickly and connects to it like a gum. No USB port,but we can connect the micro usb to a regular USB dock then to the any regular USB device such as hard drives. It can instal YM but the YM seems to have degraded their program for tablets, i wud recommend installing ebuddy or nimbuzz better Net is fast. Video calls superb.. camera's ok..but dont expect too much from a 3.2 mgp. It took me months to actually choose which tab to buy. But really, this ones a keeper, worth every penny. I bought it for 3000 Sr. Now the price just went up to 3400.. means to say.. they are selling like hotcakes

I got this 4 days ago, its my first tablet an I'm so happy I made the right choice after searching the internet for days. the only thing I wish for now is for it to be able to call which I understand was disable just before the release of this piece. I hope samsung Will have a rethink and enable the feature thru update. To have a longer battery life I don't use 3G at all, I set it to use EDGE only for data and I'm getting almost 2 days with moderate surfing and being online 24/7 on all my social networks. I love this!

i had bought one 10 days a go from Dubai - UAE , it's not released in Egypt yet , its very Cheek , Beautiful , unfortunately it can not make phone calls , it was for about 700 $ for the 16 GB with a local warranty inside UAE . the gadget is really fabulous , Honeycomb is a great experience , the camera is only 3.2 MB not bad but also not good . not enough applications on the OS till now . i think if that gadget can make phone call it would be a hill of a phone . the battery is not Ok , just 6 to 8 hours of work .

Can anyone explain why the voice capabilities would be disabled? Certainly, they're present: the CTIA exhibition video shows tablets making phone calls. If I didn't have more faith in human nature (or corporate humans' nature), I'd guess that carriers $ugge$ted Samsung to disable it so the carrier could force customers to buy two devices (cellphone + tablet) and two plans (voice + data). I believe that Samsung could clean-up in the tablet market if their devices were fully enabled. Since I do have faith in human nature, I believe the reason for disabling phone capability is because dialling will work much better under IceCreamSandwich, and Samsung wants us early adopters to get familiar before giving us the full experience. I look forward to seeing whether Samsung will be my favoured vendor in the future. Another possibility is that GSM voice is going the way of the dodo, and SIP or other voice technologies, that operate over HSPA or LTE, will replace it. Samsung can't be bothered to support the dodo, despite carriers' obsolescence. In that case, I can't wait until high-speed-data voice is standardized, so my HSPA tablet will ring when my wife calls, and so I can call her back using my bluetooth headset. Do others have ideas/suggestions as to what's going on?

But I've been worrying about the hardware issue since the bigger tab released, some sgtab 10.1 users said that their tab has some kind of 'watermarks' on screen after a while. That is an incorrect assumption. 3G is the network on which GSM voice capabilities as well as internet data can be transmitted, but does not mean automatically that it will have the feature.

I saw the tablets on 13th May when they had Samsung Africa Forum in Kenya. And let me tell you its awesome! The tablets were pre-market-release models and couldn't make calls. I don't know if the retail version can make calls. I played with them for almost an hour and it simply jazzed me. Am going to get mine through a special order later this week and will update on its performance.

right..plus the connection which it concern to receive and make calls is gsm but the 3g is a way to meke your connection faster althouhg they will launch 4g nearlly with i phone 5

the 3G connection is just optional that allow you to access to internet on the go without any hassle without using WiFi. this tablet also enable you to make or receive call (by using handfree only)

Please do not confuse this with the P-1000 model of Galaxy Tab. The new Galaxy Tabs all have no GSM phone function. They are purely tablet computers.

Hardware is good but the user experience is very lacking at the moment. No apps means it's of limited functionality. Better to get an iPad 2 with thousands of apps tailored to tablet usage. Android I believe will continue improving, but tablets will only be worth buying one more generation from the current offerings.

Does the tablet have 3G Voice capability? I am surprised GSM voice capability is not there because the original Galaxy Tab(the 7 inch one) advertisements show a guy attending a conference on Galaxy Tab. I thought its an important use case. Afterall, I don't think it adds a lot to the Bill of materials.

The tab does not have phone calls to begin with, because android 3.0 does not support that funktion. but its going to work later when android uppgrade the firmwere.

I'm the first one to Vote. I just bought Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9G and it is much better than having an iPad or even iPad2. Samsung dominates the Phone Market at the moment. Please go out there and spend confidently for Samsung product.
