I'd rather use a feature phone than this. Sure it's an Android smartphone but many of the "smart" features of a smartphone have basically became useless. The Android version is way too out of date. Forget Android 2.1, Android 2.3 IS ALREADY 100% OBSOLETE!!! Not to say there weren't any good Android phones in 2010 (there were, take the Samsung Galaxy S for example), but my point is that these old Android phones have (beyond) abysmally aged. Sure, the iPhone 4 which runs up to iOS 7 is unusable but the current version of Android at the time of the iPhone 4 release was already completely obsolete a few years before iOS 7 became completely obsolete.

I got this phone last year, I am with pretty happy with the device as it look like an HP Pre3 with physical buttons and of course the versatile android OS. I change the stock android launcher to windows phone 7 launcher and it runs smoothly. There are many cons about the device, as to poor wifi signal, resistive screen, not user-friendly internet browsing, few number of games it can run, no live wallpaper, poor camera quality, scratch prone screen and poor battery life. The device is quite sturdy, I accidentally drop the device several times. It is a slider phone and I had it slide for I guess 30 times a day or roughly around 10,000 times. Well it is tough, the coating of the device is also of decent quality. If I will compare the quality of this phone to similar nokia sliding device, the build quality of this device is amazing. A similar sliding device made by nokia will only last for months. The device runs smoothly, it is a good phone for calling and texting, it has good call quality, it has decent speaker, although the quality of sound using headphone is a bit poor. Overall it is a good device in its price category and against nokia phones running symbian. If OT 980 have the following it will be so awesome... 1) 1500 to 2500 mah battery 2) 3.2 to 3.5 screen 3) Capacitive screen 4) Scratch resistant glass (Gorilla, MG, Sodaline) 5) ICS or Jelly Bean 6) Thinner 7) Better quality camera with 5mp to 8mp 8) LED flash 9) Polycarbonate plastic or aluminum

In the Philippines, you can buy an Alcatel 980 battery for Php500 or around $11. Usually in SM stores with Alcatel kiosk. But you are in UK, you can try to purchase it online, I don't know if you can purchase one via online site such as Lazada or Ebay.

Hey, i bought this mobile phone last monday and i can say that the comments about the battery is true, it is easily drained. But i installed an application in the market, a battery saver and it works, the camera is dark but you can adjust the brightness. I love this phone actually, it is an "all-around" smartphone. I have access to the android market and the keyboard is nicely made. The touchscreen is responsive actually. Camera: 6/10 Internet: 9/10 Battery: 5/10 touchscreen: 8/10 everything: 7/10

I am following up my comment the other day with the same warning about this phone. It should not even be sold on the market in any country and no body should have the displeasure to use this phone. I would never ever recommend this piece of "technology" some might call it to anybody on the planet we live on. It was not worth the money that I myself paid for it. I really really want to buy a new phone but this is only the second year of my phone contract and cannot get a new phone until next year. But, when I do get a new phone I will never buy an alcatel phone again. I would just get the Droid Razr or another phone that would actually be worth the money to buy. Never in my entire life have I come across a phone worse than this in the touchscreen world. I would never ever recommend this phone to anybody in the entire planet Earth. Even if Osama or Hitler was alive I wouldn't even recommend it to them. This phone is by far the worst phone on the planet and probably in the solar system or the milky way. People would be ready to grab this phone and throw it away. Again I would never recommend this phone to anybody ever. People need phones for many reasons. For business calls or texts, or even just for the pleasure that a touchscreen phone brings to people. But, if you're going to get a touchscreen for a lot of money that sucks at what it does then buy this phone. Otherwise just spend your money on something useful. This phone is an atrosity. I have had this phone for a little over 2 years now and I am constantly having problems. For starters it turns off when I open it. Also it breaks easy and is not worth the money or time to get it fixed. Doesn't hold battery worth anything. I would never recommend this phone to anybody not even for a joke. This phone sucks at every aspect of a phone I have ever seen in my entire life. I will never like to use this phone even if it was fixed. Alcatel is really trying to ush people off the edge with this crappy little phone that people are supposed to use for pleasure and for business. Again, i would never even recommend this phone to anybody. Even if it was somekind of sick joke that people thought was going to be funny in the end. I recommend if you're going to get a phone. Definitely the worst phone I be ever used.... hands down no question. Touch screen unresponsive, didn't receive text messages, switched networks constantly, speaker phone worked only after a minute after the initial phone call, alarm clock is difficult shut off, and much more tweeks. Wouldnt pay 5 bucks for this nightmare phone. Have upgraded to LG optimus 2 x and love it. Worth every penny

Love it's basic android interface. Enjoyed customizing the interface. The battery can last up to three days with airplane mode on... Funny thing is that the phone hates a low memory card and apps fill the card real fast.

It is a lovely little phone, Android platform is excellent, and has all the bits & bobs I would like (Email, Facebook, Twitter etc), the downside is the touchscreen is poor, and the battery life is shocking! I have to charge the phone every night, and the other day, even thought I was in uni with my phone switched off all morning, the battery ran out on my way home, so I got from about 7.15am - 6pm use of my phone. Which by anyone's standards is rather poor. I think I just like the Android platform, rather than the phone, actually...

my brand new OT-980 broke down after two weeks of use only! sent it to the service center and got it back after three(3)long months! So i had to buy a brand new phone Samsung Duo that is and i am very happy with it! the problem was the board of the OT-980 got destroyed, they had to replace it, i ask the service center personnel, the chance of it getting destroyed again is really big, but this time at least my waiting period will be shorter, so that is why they are selling the OT-980 at a very cheap prize now a days there is a kind of factory defect in that mother board. It's a really big waste i like the phone very much but it really gave me a big head ache! Alcatel where is your quality control China made phones are even better than you now, also the battery of the OT-980 drains so fast! if ever you could change my OT-980 to a new and better model i would gladly promote that unit myself! Thank you.

If u need smthn for leisure and entertainment this cell phone wont fit at all ... if u need smthn for Work, this is ur best companion, just the battery issue is a problem but, it's better than any other Android ... it stays on for a full 30 hrs with phone calls, txts and full 3G usage (Email, Facebook, Twitter and Web Surfing), so it's not a cellphone for those who like life and music, it's a cellphone for those who care about work and wants to be always updated with news. the touch screen is good for a Resistive, Wifi Receiver is working perfect but this will go down with the battery time to 25 hrs. i've been using this device for 5 month till now & the only problem i dun like about it is it sometimes become slow in the humid and warm places, other wise it's a super Android device for a working day.

i think the OS cannot be upgraded... and about the multi-tasking, yes it can, the maximum memory for multi tasking is 60MB example: text, use notes, music back ground, surf the net on wifi... cool phone :)

sure thing, today I got this phone from carphone warehouse and not locked at all. only had to get PAYG for orange sim at a tenner, but otherwise now runs '3 network' with no problems and no setup difficulty. I am happy.

Downloading of music or any files can be done by using the phone's internet browser or by connecting your phone to your pc using the usb cable included in the package then transfer your music files from pc to your phone (particularly to your memory card).

Yes, tat's exactly what i done to my phone. Another benefit after link the apps to the sd card is that if the phone crash again, we just need to take out the sd card and the phone will be just fine.

Yes u gotta root it, don't worry, rooting is safe as long as you don't mess up with the file system, and i did it using "superoneclick". By the way, there's so much benefit after rooting the device. For example, i can install setcpu to configure different cpu policies just like power management in various os. I even remove some of the apps from the rom to free up some internal storage.

For the cure of limited internal storage space, u can try "link 2 sd". U need to create 2 partition for your sd card n remember DON'T format to fat32 or ntfs, it wouldn't works, i did it with fat16

very good phone..only drawback is the resistive touchscreen.. but honestly it's very responsive and who would want to use capacitive touchscreen on a small display.. imagine surfing the net with the screen size with no stylus.. and oh camera is just decent. if you just want to take some decent photos then this will be fine.. surfing speed is fast and gps no problem:D

if you press the menu button, just left of the home button, it will bring up a menu. in that menu press the add button. from there you want to select widgets. you will need to scroll down to "Power Control". Add that widget and it will let you enable and disable functions at the touch of a button

Hi there, I bought this phone on Ebay. I like the combination of physical keyboard with Android OS. There are not many phones like that on the market. OT-980 is probably cheapest one. In general this phone is great. The keyboard is a bit small, but I found the method to type easily - use your nails :) The most negative issue related to that phone is touchscreen. It is very "sensitive". It happens very often to launch an app or to go to menu item instead of "planned" scrolling...

Phone here in the Philippines is worth 10 thousand pesos, I rather buy a Optimus One than this one. I tested the unit for 15 minutes and the keypad were stiff because its rubber. I'm sure it will get yellowish someday, the slider is quite not the feel of a slider phone. Plus touchscreen is a mess.

Bought this to play with the platform and have been pleasantly surprised,3 months of daily use and no major groans,runs everything sweet and syncs with google accounts and plays nicely with all media..after installing a few codecs.. :).I don't rate the Alcatel windows software,,but then I'm probably biased and much prefer to just mount the sd on any linux distro which it does without any bother.. Anyone having battery life problems needs to install a task killer from the market as with any smart phone, apps left running in the background really feast on power

check first if the default format for the time is in 24hrs or 12hrs. most likely if u set ur alarm for morning and the time format for ur phone is in 24hrs.. ur alarm will really be in the afternoon.

I purchased one of these things (in Australia, very hard to get here) and it's got a stuck button of some sort - the "hang-up" button seems to be permanently depressed, I have to actually hold that button down to do anything and there's ZERO support here for these phones I'm finding out. Anyone else seen this problem or have any suggestions on how to fix? I think it's not a physical switch thing as it does the reverse of this when I push and hold that button.

Just confirm this phone is £79.95 if ordered online on T-Mobile from Car Phone Warehouse (plus £10 Credit). Great phone and my battery is still at 70% charge 2 days after receiving it. Anyone know when Android 2.2 or higher coming for this phone? Alcatel seem not to know when.

Set the phone to 2g only for normal use that will help but the phone does use a lot of battery power. Can only suggest you get a spare battery and keep it charged i normally get about a day and a half out of a full charge. Battery is affected also by which network used ie tmobile will drain power more than orange as orange uses stronger signal with better transmitters tmobile will cause the phone to draw more battery power to boost reception.

I think Alcatel should bring this phone to Indonesia. The Android fever is starting to get really hot here.... I miss those days when Alcatel can use 2 AA size batteries.....

Bought one 3 weeks ago. OT-980 is great value for money Android phone. Great phone. love the qwerty keyboard. Only worry was battery life, but that's resolved if you remove bundled apps. got around 40 hours without charging. :). would recommend it if you don't want to spend a laptop's price for a phone.

My husband purchased my Alcatel OT-980 from Carphone Warehouse. I have found a problem and would like to ask others who have bought the phone if they have experienced it. It randomly comes up with a message suggesting i have removed the memory card and then put it back. This is annoying as if the phone thinks the card is missing you cant access stuff off it. I am taking it back to be repaired/updated whatever as i love the phone and it needs sorting out.

I got this phone today here in Manila, Philippines for around US$233. So far, for the price that I paid, I think this phone is really a value for money. Highly recommended!

yeah i got this phone and its one off da best phones i have ever had , people think alcatel are makers of cheap crappy phone well they got cheap right but crappy far from it and i will go as far to say it even better then da blackberry tourch as i have used both and the ot980 is da better of the two , so dont be a fool go for this cheap little power house

Finally the price has come down to £99 in the UK at Carphone Warehouse. This is the price it should of been originally priced at. I am still very interested in this phone due to the fact that its the first Alcatel Android handset and it has a qwerty keyboard. The only things holding me back are the low-resolution resistive screen and camera.

I can easily say that this is the most complete phone Alcatel has ever built and because of android it has some sweet little features. I currently use one as my daily phone, very cool.

I agree about san francisco, use it now. Dare I say feel it's actually better than a desire. The screen is actually better, believe it or not. This Alcatel is still good though, do not own it, provided you don't mind the limited applications at this resolution which is same as wildfire, it's good value. It has a full keyboard nice feature. This company make some very good phones now better than Nokia's offerings I feel! Hope this phone sells well like it deserve's.

It should be another story if u go to play with OT-980. Especially for the physical qwerty keypad, you can enjoy it with so convenient/quick input i think...

I definitely agree with you there! The Orange San Francisco is an absolute bargain for what you get @£99. I was almost going to by the HTC Wild Fire until I played with this handset. The screen for the price is amazing, glass, capacitive, 480x800 pixels and multi-touch as well. Live wall papers looks amazing, google maps is fast, WiFi performance is superb, video play back quality is crisp. For £99 I had to have it.

Im glad alcatel have made this phone but I stand by my original comment. There are other 2.1 handsets for £30 cheaper. Take the Orange San Francisco(ZTE Blade) for example. It has Android 2.1, more memory, 3.5 inch 800x480 CAPACITIVE touch screen and better camera and is only £99! I would definitely not buy the alcatel OT-980 over this cheaper, better spec'd phone.

ive played with the handset and for the £129.99 price tag its worth it the handset fells like it will last a few years the speed at which the phone runs at is fantastic the slide it nice it can be moved with one hand

Looks exactly like the palm pre and their having build problems with cracking screens hope alcatel build is better, usually alcatel phones are cheap but this one i think is priced to high for the brand and give it a couple of months and i bet its dropped in price due to low sales, think i will stick with my sony x10 mini.

This is now available at the Carphone Warehouse(UK) on O2 for £129.95. I think that price is far too high for this phone. It should be atleast £30 cheaper. I was looking forward to the release of this phone but I wont be buying it at this price as there are a few other android handsets by other manufactures for £100 or less.

It says that it is android 2.1 eclair on the carphone warehouse and the phone will be out later this month in black. It will be in between £60 and £110 and it doesn't state the network it will be on. When the phone was first announced it was only android 1.5 but alcatel have updated it. When this phone is out I will probably be buying it from the carphone warehouse in september. I hope that GSMArena do a review on this phone because it's definitely Alcatel's best mobile!

The black/silver version of this phone is now listed on the Carphone Warehouse(UK) website as "Coming Soon- Expected: August 2010" :) :) :) It also states that it comes with 15 apps pre-loaded including games and facebook + twitter app. It doesnt mention which network it will be available on or what version of Android it comes with, but recent articles on some websites suggest its v2.1(Eclair) It also doesnt mention a price, but it will probably be below £100 :)

I can't wait to get this mobile! It's seems like the perfect mobile phone for me. Although, it's a little bit ugly, and I think alcatel can do better. Recently their mobiles have been good and I must admit, very fun and interesting to use, and that's why I can't wait for this phone to be released, especially because it's got android, I think it will be great. Though I also think this could have a better camera, since it's suppost to be one of the best alcatel mobiles so far. I think anyone who loves social networking, a good working phone, a qwerty keyboard and doesn't really care about cameras and things like that should definately buy this device, because it's priced at under £100!

My God..according to Cellatel.com (TCL Alcatel's North American distributors), the OT-980 would only be available after September 2010! They are starting to make feature-rich phones but they still need to bring the products to the marker ASAP!
