i faced similar issue, i went to moto service and they re-installed my OS, but the problem persisted, later moto guys asked me for the SIM Card i was using and found that it was faulty and caused phone to restart, asked operator to change my card and with new sim its working fine, no issues of restarting at all

I had this phone for just a few months. I'm really impress about this phone because of how the phone goes. On the other hand, this phone lacks battery strength in a way tha it always turns off by it self evrytime i use the browser... This phone could be pain in my butt sometimes! U need to call your service provide and tell them that u need them to send you two update to your phone. 1 for the internet (t-zone) and the other for picture messaging. Here are the settings for t-mobile that you can manually enter. Go to Then select GPRS WAP Internet Settings from the buttom right "Help" section. This will give you the internet and MSS settings. The only thing that I am still having problems with is recieving picture messages. I can do everything else.

The phone is no doubt great, but just shuts off during conversations. Also i faced a problem with the software and document viewer, as trying to open docs in the phone would lead to the phone hanging up!!

I have been going through the review comments posted for this model, but amazed to see if its really been tried or not. Most of the complaints are about synching. Why not go to linuxdevices.com and download the applicable usb drivers. It comes with elinux 2.4 (and with me it has never ever crashed), and happens to be the most stable I have come across till date. Alternatively go to the mobile section of astalavista.box.sk, and you should be able to find almost every information that you aspire to seek. Whatever has been shipped with the device is already the best possible that could have been done. This device happens to be a great bluetooth, which can be used for various purposes with different profiles and no LOS requirement (a major shortfall of Ir). Little tweaking here and there and you could do wonders with this right from browsers, wap for synching to a full fledged channel scanner.

yeah.. even my mic stopped working .. i got it fixed from Motorola.. they changed the mic i think .. its working fine now..

It worked very nicely for about two years. Recently, the mic stopped working suddenly without any shock or damage. Now I can only use it via : Bluetooth, headphones or hands free speakers. I have used 3 versions of this phone beginning with the Accompli 008 then the A760 and now the A780.The phone gets better every time.It is rugged and not fidly like some others I have used.The flip top protects the screen real well.I just wish Motorola would now include a WiFi functionality along with FM Radio and a GPS version for India to complete this already great package.If any one wants additional software for this phone just go to I use a Gmail application along with The new Opera Beta version and Google maps , all perform flawlessly.

hey guy's, i think the phone is really good in general apart from 2 things. 1st is the battery life that really poor but depaends what you use like mp3 software for listening on the music or going on the sat nav bit whick i more on the best software out. 2nd is once the battery runs out i can't recharge it if i take the battery out and leave it for 3 days then charge it then it work, just want to know if any one else is experiancing the same problems with there a780 phone pleae reply many thanks

I had this phone for 5 months and overall it was pretty good. At times, when i stored too much stuff...it lagged a little (had to keep poking the screen in hopes it would go faster...doesn't really help). Text messaging was a pain since you have to use the pen n write it as oppose to pressing keys. Great thing about it is you have the option to dial with the key pad on the cover. My touch screen hasn't failed me so far.

The phone is great buy, but if you compare it with other features that are on other phones. It has a long way to go. Cons: 1. Screen goes blank in sunlight. Similar thing happens to P990 and other touch screen phones as well. Its no different. This is a problem 2. Ringer isnt very loud. 3. Touch screen goes bad after a while. 4. Not too many s/w for the Linux OS. You get ones that are not very helpful. 5. Outside buttons are not great and messaging isnt at all comfortable. 6. Readialing is a pain. Pressing the call button 4 times, get u to redial. That too press slowly else the phone doesnt dial. 7. Access to memory card is really slow. 8. Battery doesnt last long. 9. Menu access from outside is very limited. Pros: 1. Cheap and stirdy. 2. Net expierence is good. 3. Good speaker to talk. 4. Camera is good. 5. Rocker button on the side of the phone, isnt very comfortable to be use. You cant get a better feedback on this. Its your take now!

After 3 months its touch Screen was malfunctioning,,so I was not in a position to even start the pone,Recently i returned from Russia and Phone was given for under warrenty repair to MOTOROLA service centre, They said * We will get touch screen of this A780 then u bring yr phone for repairing* Still this oficial service center has not Touch screen,,evry day I use to call service centre,, Now My phone is USELESS,,,no proper services under warrenty is available,, Perhaps for Chargeabe service also ,I hv doubt ,,weather this service centre can set the thing right or not?

This phone is value for money...the Linux OS never hangs and its quite fast. The only problem i've faced is with the frnt flip..some of the keys on the keypad have ceased to respond. The bad thing is that they cannot be repaired as the front keypad comes fused with the flip hence the entire flip has to be replaced. This is a problem, the motoroal service is not able to make the necessary reapirs. My conclusion is that as long as the kyypad on the flip works, its a great phone, once it gives trouble..the phone is junk..its a big risk, is it worth taking? u hav to decide that..

I've my phone since september and the battery is fine but doesn't last long so I've just have a handy USB cable to charge and sync them as well. Its feature packed, seamless syncing with H3 razr bluetooth and not even halfway filled on the 512MB Transflash. Sound is excellet if you use the provided earpiece. My reason for getting the phone is its multifeature like a swiss army knife. Anyway, get a third party longer lasting battery and use the features to maximize your investment. The 40+ MB RAM probably make it one of the more stable phone I've owned.

A message to everyone out there...PLS DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!! The battery concked within 2 months of me buying it and when I went to the the Motorola service station, I saw many people with a similar kind of charging problem. And I had to go there 6 times for them to fix it for me. Now I'm the days before I have to there again with another problem. Frankly guyz, you can do without this phone. Its given me nothing but problems. That's 14,000 bucks I'll never see again :-( After this I have sworn never to buy any Motorola product ever again.

hi,'no name'. i tried 2 keep all the deleted sms in 'thrash'. i kept it untill 1000 sms,n it still can add more. then i deleted all of them. i dont know the exact how many it can store. probably more than 1000.

Hi all. I purchased my A780 about 3 weeks ago off Ebay. I am in the US with T-mobile.I have one problem. I can not create and save a network profile. When I go to "data network" and put in the info and click on save, it never saves the profile. Therefore I can not get my internet broweser to work. Can anyone help with this problem. I love this phone. It's the best I have ever had, and believe me I have had several.

Dear Sajin Jose, Yes u can use this as horizontal position too for viewing the pictures or taking pictures. But u dont have an option for An FM radio..but who cares when u have a great sounding MP3 players(sounds great only through ear phones). And lastly..as i know u can use upto 512MB card as companies Specifications..but i feel this set can take 1GB card too.. This set is good overall..

Just got it..and I like it very much..especially I got it with a free blueetoth razr h3 & 512MB sd card. With realplayer, u already got a multimedia device but its multi entry functions (rocker/jog dial, keypad,touch screen and voice commans!)that i like the most. I was a nokia fan before but their new phones tend to be slower and crashes.

Now that I have deleted them all, the message continues to show and only periodically. I have tried making a lot of room and also have a flash card stored with nothing on that. hey GAURAV, im too planning to buy this cell..i reside in mangalore(karnataka, india) and had went to a local cell dealer..he said me..they have no stock of this beauty..i was disappionted at that time...but after that he called his main dealer..and he said he has one piece..im was glad to here that..and it costs Rs.13,900/- here..im buying this within tuesday or so... i had the earlier model, i.e A760..which battery back-up and network reception was great..but only problem with that cell was i had no patiance to write the text messages with that pen...it would take so long time...so i sold it.. but now this cell comes with a key pad too..but i dont know whether i can use the key pads to type the text messages...and does it have T9 like the nokia..pls help me out guys...i need this beauty..pls anybody relply soon...who owns this beauty...thanks a lot...

Motorola A780 memory problem and error message: I've had my phone for a year now, and overall am quite happy with it, except for one big problem. After about six months of use, I started to see these inexplicable "Memory Full" error messages when I tried to change settings. Often, their appearance seemed random. If I changed a setting on the ringer style, it would give that message. 20 minutes later, it might change the setting with no error message. However, over time, the message appeared more and more frequently and included "Flash Memory is Full" as an additional error message appearing. Finally after trying all possible options I did a Master Reset, the problem was gone, but six months later, came back again.... I tried: Killing background applications, and uninstalling additional apps. Clearning the SMS memory and emptying trash bin. Making sure there was sufficient space on both the flash card and the system memory (at least 20 MB on each free). However, the problem would start to recur. Has any other owner seen this? Any other ideas to fix it? I've got a standard phone with 128 MB transflash. Thanks for your help. Jason

I don't know how else to say this to ppl.... You cannot MODIFY, CREATE, ENVISAGE (or any other verb for that matter) any Microsoft applications on the A780. You can only view them. Nothing else but view them. Anything else you want to do...GET ANOTHER PHONE !!!!

IT'S AN AWESOME PHONE! I would seriously recommend this phone over the A1200 as the A780 is better made but just a bit heavier thats all. It's very easy to use and quite clear. It also has a keypad in the front, in case you don't want to dial using touch screen (using touch screen around a lot of people will attract attention...and it could get stolen so watch out. If you already own one, get one now! It has everything u need.

Answers to EVERYONE's question ..... 1. There is currently no Sound Booster available for PDAs using Linux (like the A780). Whoever started this stupid Sound Booster thing was referring to another phone. There is the Sound Booster software for other OSs but not Linux. 2. Anyone looking for a screen protector can buy them in packs on eBay. They are not that useful in my opinion. Protecting your screen from dust is no big deal. If anyone knows how to protect from dents, lemme know. You don't have to worry about scratches on your touchscreen because the flap closes, unlike with other open-faced PDAs. 3. Currently, Yahoo are not allowing Linux PDAs to access their pops mail. Yahoo offers this ability only through the subscription email (the one you pay $19.99 for). You can set it up but it will not receive or send emails. Most people use thier A780 to access work email because companies don't waste their time with stupid pop3 blocks or whatever they are called. 4. You can use your A780 to get MSN instant messenger or Yahoo messenger, but not AIM or AOL messenger. It requires some research though, FYI. 5. The A780 can support up to a 1GB Transflash. I have not tested a higher Transflash because none exists beyond 1GB (as far as I know). 6. The best A780 web browser is Opera Mini. Regular Opera is an insult to technology. 7. There is no software available that will help you create/modify Microsoft Office applications. I guess noone has paid Bill Gates enough money to allow that to happen. So be content with just viewing them, not modifying them. 8. THE BATTERY CAN LAST MORE THAN 24HRS. Mine goes almost 2 days (and that is pushing it for a PDA). I have my GPRS on all the time but I dont turn my Bluetooth on. The secret is to do as much as u can without opening the flip. Using the touchscreen DRAINS battery power. Well, over some time...hehe. 9. Another way to save battery power is to not use Voice Dial, and also turn off the "talking-phone" feature. That stupid thing talks all the damn time. I know it's cool to show people that your phone can READ your text messages to you, but if you wanna save power....you know what to do. 10. You can record an on-going conversation by simply pushing the middle left button. Unfortunately, you cannot call your buddy and replay the convo to him/her (because the convo is recorded like a regular song file on your PDA). Likewise, you cannot call your buddy and play one of your mp3 files to him/her. 11. Your A780 can be a flash drive. Just plug it up via USB to any Windows XP computer and it sets up automatically and ......you now have an additional drive. 12. If you bought the A780 in a GOLD BOX, you don't have EDGE. If it came in a SILVER BOX, you have EDGE. I hope I answered everything.

For those who are having problems with the lack of battery life, just turn off the GPRS by clicking on the bar that shows the clock, battery and signal strenght. I'm not used to write on forums like this, but I understand that it's extremely hard to go through every single page of the A780 forum to find an answer for your question. It would help to have a search engine to be used here. The A780 is a great phone, I've been using it for almost a year. The only problems are the slow speed of the calendar, the lack of applications to edit Microsoft Office files and the vulnerability to get scratches on the face plate. Hope this helps.

Mine worked fine following a charge even if the battery had gone flat out. You may want to bring it back for a test. Also try getting a 2nd battery. You'll need it. In response to others... Certain mp3 tones seem to sound louder than others. Phone stores mp3 and photos (55mb sharing). Uses Tranflash memory card also. Speakers (& camera) are so-so. But the supplied stereo earphones are good. As with any new device, just need a little getting used to. And after, it's a breeze to operate the phone. IMO, a well-built and reliable model.

hi 780 owners, i have a picky question: i've been sending pictures back & forth to another 780 user. we both have cingular network in the u.s.. no matter how large or small the picture size is (10-150kb), the network (or phone) automatically downsizes it to less than 5kb, which means the picture comes out very tiny on the screen. while i consistantly get larger images (at least 10kb) from another friend who uses a moto razr with t-mobile network. does anyone know why & how to fix it? i tried tempering with all settings (i.e. downsize, upsize, 200k on sending size, etc.) but failed to solve to the problem. i also tried sending the pics as attachments; the reciever would get a message saying the message is too large to be transmitted ..... however, sending pics as attachments to an email address works fine. has anyone encountered the same issue? thnx ahead of time, david nyc

You can log-on to www.starhub.com.sg (a Singapore mobile service provider) for details in configuring gprs, internet etc. The procedures should be similar if you are using another network elsewhere. Just contact your service provider for network-specific data and apply them following the procedures from the Starhub. Btw, the phone is not with me now so hope the above helps.

I have this handset and wanted to check support for a couple of features and came across this ur. There is a lot to be spoken about the handset apart from what is mentioned, it has "elinux" and not "Linux" as mentioned. What made me all the more happier that its one of the best in the class as well as reasoneable, maybe because of the E OS, the costs are contained. I know a bigger manufacturer from the said who tried this/similar implementation thrice and badly failed.

Can't recall exactly how I set-up Yahoo while I was using A780, but if I'm not wrong, settngs were similar to A768i (visit link below). You also need to activate some Yahoo functions for it to work (no charge). As for the supplied original stereo earpieces, they gave pretty good sound quality for MP3 tracks. A780 is a very decent smart phone, good built quality and basic pda functions. If you don't need wifi, 3G etc, it's really worth getting! First of all this is a great site for the Motorola A780. I have been able to set up my phone just by reading the information posted. I do have a few questions. 1. Where can I obtain the sound booster software ? 2. How can I delete the games that came with the phone ? 3. There is a sound in the background when I use the phone, it sounds like an application is running and searching for something (people on the other end say it sounds like a vaccum cleaner)I have turned off everything I can think of, TMobile does not know the answer. Hey Herm, I need your help please. I really like this phone but I can't get the voice to work. I have it were it talks to me and will say the persons name but it wont recognize my voice. Sorry to bother everyone with a data connect question but I am having trouble and even after searching I can't seem to solve it. I am trying to input the settings into a cingular profile but the given DNS numbers (66.209.xx.xx) won't fit into the available place. Basically that second numer, 3 digits long, wont fit into the two digits the phone gives. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kreeger, I got my internet to work fine using the directions i found here, the only thing i can think of is that you dont have your gprs enabled or something. I am NOT an expert, but i do know that the directions worked very well for me. To the other guy with the memory card problem, you need to switch your phone to mass storage device and load whatever you want on there. I have a 512meg transflash card and i here rumors of a 1 gig.

I love this phone, i got it a while ago, and then got another phone a put the a 780 on the back burner. I washed the new phone, and started tinkering with the a780 again, i cant believe what i missed the first time around. Michael, In real player you can save add to add multiple songs to your playlist and you can save about 50 songs per playlist on the version I have. Obviously, you can have multiple playlists.

Michael, I take that you don't have the phone yet. Real Player is one of the home screen icon or you can locate it under Multimedia by clicking the application launcher (top Left). Once you connect your phone to a computer (I have tried it in w2k and XP) the phone acts as a usb drive, you can copy files to your transflash card or the phone predefined folders (or you can create your own) then in Realplayer you go to open file and you add the media from the folder(s).

Jed, Yes the phone will play the video in full screen and Yes you can set the phone to play a predefined tone or a MP3/AAC/WMA ringtone when a message arrives. As how loud it is, it depends where you are. I have an mp3 song as my ringtone and sometimes I can't hear it in the street b/c I have it low if I change it to high then is to loud @ my job.

Michael, I live in the ATL as well and have cingular. The phone works great and I get EDGE wherever I go. Look for the cingular settings in our previous postings. ADI, You can use the speaker phone with the flip open or closed. However, if you activate the speaker phone with the flip open and then close the flip the phone will disconnect the call.

To Srinivas: the defult codes for the phone as I think are 1234 and the another one is 000000 if you have 4 digits enter the first one if 6 digits enter the second one... the master clear clears the memory and reset the sittings... the master reset just resets the sittings

This is a great fone. Especially to make and receive calls u don't need to open the flip. Accessing the contacts using the keypad is a breeze. Just type the few characters and you get the complete matching list. Open the flip and you will be thrilled with the display quality. The 48 MB memory is just enough to hold around 10 MP3 songs with around 4MB size. however I would recommend converting MP3 to WMA with much lesser bitrate around 32K or 22K without much loss in quality but you can store around 40 songs. The office applications are good too. Internet experience is very good. I would recommend this phone to anyone who would prefer a change from the normal flip and candybar type phones.

The transflash card needs inserting with the connections to the front. It needs a fingernail or similar to push it right in, then latches. Push again to unlatch. While I'm on, can anyone tell me how to get the Copilot voice through a bluetooth headset? I cant hear the phones speaker in the car. Cheers, Tony.

Nira, Typical an MP3 song is like 3.xMB so with 40MB internal memory you would be able to store around 10-12 songs. I got a 512MB transflash card and when I recorded my CDs I used wma instead of MP3. I also lower the bit rate (less quality, smaller file) to 64bit and I can store close to 200 songs. Btw, 1GB cards are out now and they should work on the phone.

Ok here's the official line on European A780 voice dial. As Herm says this version of the phone is shipped without the feature. Motorola initially said it was the CoPilot phones, but they haven't said if the feature was taken off because of CoPilot. ALK said initially that they have phones with CoPilot on that can still voice dial. Now they are concurring with Motorola and saying if Motorola have decided to disable the feature on Euro phones then they must have had a good reason. My beef is that when I first looked into the phone the only spec I could find was the one that showed voice dial as a permanent feature. Neither CoPilot or Motorola (or BT) said in their blurb that this model had no voice dial. They didn't say it didn't either but I feel that they should. So if you're looking for a phone with both voice dial and CoPilot - look elsewhere. I wonder what would happen if you bought a US spec phone and installed CoPilot after purchase as an add on? Guess we'll never know Phil

I have been using the A780 for over 6 months, and have yet to have any problems. The downloads are lightning quick (for a cell phone) and the software has never frozen up. Of course, since it is basically a mini-computer, it *may* lock up in the future, but it hasn't yet. I love it. Can't wait to get the GPS version with CoPilot.

Johnny A, I read on the internet that voice command was removed from the European version (I guess a trade off since it has GPS). to view wmv you will need to get a 3gpp/mpg4 converter. See download.com to get 1. I can view pdf without any problems. The Picsel viewer has instructions.

Hey everyone, if you are getting apps from getjar.com, select A768 as your phone of choice. All A768 apps work perfectly with A780. For some apps, though, the absence of an off-screen keypad posses a problem. It's a trial & error thing. You can only use ur phone 4 Yahoo mail if u suscribe to their POP mail. For MSN, just call their 1800 number. BTW, There are apps at getjar.com for password-protecting files/folders on your A780. Random as hell: you can get software from download.com to convert any video file to MPEG-4 format (readable on the A780).

Jeff, For starters the A780 is a world phone. The V3x has a better Camera, 24MB more memory and it's a 3G phone (higher inet speed, where service is avail). Not sure about the apps, you will have to check that out. I can tell you that after 1.5 months and still in love with my phone.

Ken, here is the setting for T-Zones.....it's worked for every A780, Razr, V600 or wateva phone I've had. Any problems, lemme know. BTW, it works for web and picture messaging. Go to Setup, click on Data Network, Open the lower left menu and select New ... Profile Name: T-Zones GPRS APN: wap.voicestream.com Timeout: Off (both timeout fields) Baud Rate: Auto Line Type: Modem That is it...leave every other field empty, don't put any other info in. No DNS servers or CSD settings. Opera works best for T-Zones (not Opera-mini). There is a new Opera version at Opera.com. PLENTY of apps @ getjar.com. MOTO A1200 IS TERRIBLE.....YUCK!!!

Sherry, E is good. It is high speed internet at approx 200+kbps G is slower. I would go with one of the Moto headsets HSxxx. The voice command does the same thing to me. I never use it. but i tried with the included stereo headset and it works.

Hi all, Ok Herm, I'm ready for your help. LOL. Just so you know what your up against, I dont know what Edge is, or what your all talkin about when you say PD. Jeff, It is Picsel viewer just for viewing documents no editing. Phil, First you must load voice recognition by holding the voice key on the left side for a few seconds. In setup there is an option for Voice Commands.

Hi all, Some great info here about the A780 - thanks. I've had the phone here in the UK for a couple of weeks and I love it. Can't seem to figure out how to setup/use the voice independent dialling I've seen mentioned here and on Motorola site? Any ideas? I have cingular and the browser works great only thing I had to do was to configure the network settings as posted here. Michael, the Nokia looks pretty good. I guess any phone could break. I like the fact that the A780 is Quadband. I will count the 600 out. I don't like how it looks. But I feel your pain tough decision between the Nokia and the Moto. The both have unique feature I like the touch screen but it would be nice to have FM in addition to MP3. Good Luck!

Brief Comment then a question COMMENT: Just got the phone in the US (T-Mobile). So far, it's the perfect phone for today's college student (GO PENN STATE). I got no complaints, it's waaaay better than my roomates' Treo 650s. One downside is the low speaker/speakerphone volume. Also, it's hard to play java games that require a keypad, the A780 doesn't have a keypad when u r playing java games so can't play my SUDOKU. Anyone can correct me. Opera browser works perfectly, Opera mini sucks!!! It says "testing" forever. EDGE is great, the Bluetooth turns on in stealth mode (something like that), you have to make it Discoverable for ppl to see you. QUESTION: Does anyone know where I can get an antivirus program for my A780? My bro got Norton on his Nokia 6260 and I'm jealous.

Nevermind. I called customer service at Cingular and he helped me figure it out. The SMS "Service Center Number" was incorrect so I corrected it. I had my own phonenumber in there it was suppose to be: "+13123149810" and for the pop3 on my yahoo I realized that I made a big mistake. On the incoming server the port number I had was 25. It was actually port 110. I should have done a little more research. But nonetheless this website is awesome. If anyone has problems I would be more than happy to help with whatever I know. I have figured out MMS, SMS, Web, and POP3/IMAP with the help of this site and some other ones.

This is the best website ever just to let you know. I just bought the phone yesterday and I had problems with the MMS, SMS, Browser and the Email. I went through about 15 pages of reading old posts and figured out the MMS and Browser problems. However, I still cant get SMS and the email to work. Nero, You can get it new unlocked on ebay for about $375USD (including shipping). This phone is suppose to come with two batteries and a 128 Transflash card that I believe the ebay dealers are not giving it to us. If you want something that fix in your pocket that looks nice and comes with a bunch of features, this is the phone that you want. If you are looking to get additional applications installed there aren't that many useful java apps for this. I like this phone alot, I had a treo 650 and the call handling was bad, too big, mp3 reboots after 4/5 songs. This phone hasn't crashed once. I was playing mp3, got a call mp3 player stopped, when the call was over it restarted playing.

herm, thnx so much for your help. i, & perhaps all other users, appreciate your time, effort & spirit of good-sport. good to meet people like you in our society who aren't just out there for their own interests. i changed my settings on my mms. since you gave both the mmsc..... setting, as well as the nymeric IP setting, for profile setup, i tried both to send pics to a friend who has a razor. i'll find out tomorrow wether she got both pics. as far as my email. i figured a couple of weeks ago to put in the numeric ip addresses in send- & recieve- setups. however my server numbers are different than yours because i'm hooking it up to read my verizon.net (not the cell phone company but my home dsl isp) email accounts messages; not my mycingular.com emails. i don't actually use mycingular as my email account. i guess i could. on the other hand, i can't configure my yahoo emails to the phone because yahoo isn't pop; unless i pay to subscribe to their pop account. but that's alright. in any case, my email function on the phone works beautifully now. downloads actually are not that slow. i spoke to another cingular customer service guy today to find out about edge coverage in manhattan; he said it should be strong. so i wonder if it's my phone. but if it's only a matter of speed, between G & E; it's not really an issue for me. what i have now is relatively fast. i don't expect it to be like broadband. so herm. since we're communicating so much, would you like to exchange cell phone numbers? for one, we can send each other pics & what no if we need to test something ..... what do you think? here's my email address: [email protected]. you can send it to me that way, instead of posting it here. thnx a million again

Dear All I bought A780 in Shanghai, China recently. This phone has logo of China Mobile on it but is not locked. However, there are issues: 1. Browser as described by motorola is missing, rather monternet (some home page for China Mobile services, I guess) is displayed. 2. I cannot remove icons of China Mobile and monternet from home page of my cell when I modify the setting of home page from setup menu. Can someone please tell me if this phone will work with other service providers as well. I mean, will I still be able to surf net by setting up new data connection profiles when using other service providers. Thanks all for your responses

Mohammed, I am not sure if the phone is discontinued. Keep in mind that while this phone is FCC approved, it has never been released in the US. The phone was released for the Chinese/European market. But thanks to GSM and Quadband technology the phone works anywhere in the world as long as you have GSM service. As you can see here there are plenty of dealers that still have the phone.

David, I was using two of my friends sim cards (still waiting for fedex to deliver my wirefly order) and they both have Media.net 9.99. I ordered the 19.99 plan as well. I haven't tested MMS yet only SMS but I will try this weekend and let you know. Cingular is supposed to be pretty good in NYC so not sure what the deal is. Have you tried to go to a store close to you and see if they get Edge?

David, I didn't have to do anything for the E to show. Once I pop a sim in came right on. when I moved in the house to a different spot it switched to E/G. At work the E was on all the time. I plugged the cingular settings as described here (see old posting with cingular settings) and I was browsing to Yahoo and my company web site. I have not measured the speed yet.

After waiting for my contract to end for 3 months, I just got my moto A780 and I am in Love again!. I had a 650 and I return the piece of .... I needed a phone with PDA functions and this phone is great for me. I read the comments hear and some people dont know what they are talking about. "Oh I cannot sort my contacts by last name" , "Oh I just get G not E". Not happening here. I already synch my contacts from Yahoo via Outlook. The Signal is Great, the Sound is awesome. After my T720 that Sux, I'm glad to have a Moto that Rocks again as my StarTac 7868. BTW, getting a RAZR too. Thanks for posting the Cingular data network settings

this phone can read sms, read the name of the contact and also can dial out the contact with our voice. We can answer a call with or without to open the flip. Camera also can be taken without to open the flip. I've tried to copy one mp4 file to play and it can work but I tried to copy another mp4 file, it cannot play. Don't know what's the problem, maybe there is a limit to play the mp4 file or the size of the mp4 file is to big. Can anybody assist me on this?

Hi Telly, The Motorola A780 has been designed in such a way that you do not have to open the flip to make or receive calls. This is one such feature I like in this model. But, on the other hand, if you have a look at the other flip-based phones, you have to open the flip to make or receive calls. The outer layout of the phone contains a dial pad, answer yes/no buttons, 4 way joystick and a home button. The dial pad and answer buttons are self-explanatory. The joy stick can be used to send messages, launch media player, select contacts and view the calls history. The messages can also be typed by opening the flip and using the internal keypad or handwriting option. Ofcourse, reg. your last query, each contact has many fields and also including the Notes wherein you can type in your personal note for the contact. Hope, this helps. Manoj.

Do you open the flip or does the flip remain closed while talking? Also, how would I type a text message? This is truly a world-class phone. I have always been liking the phones from Motorola for its design, features, voice clarity and many more. This phone contains many features that the other phones do not support. One such feature I like is the voice dialing and the commands. All you need is to spell out the name in the address book the phone just fetches the appropriate one. Also the voice commands are really useful, like dial out, check battery, signal strength, send message etc. Unlike Nokia, software for this linux based phone is too difficult to get. I have been searching for productivity and entertainment software for this phone, and I am just unable to get. Otherwise, the phone is coooool.

Even I have noticed that there is a pause when you set a song as the ring tone. If any one gives you a miss call you will not know at all. If you keep in the vibe before ring, then you will come to know if a miss call is given else it is difficult to know when the miss came. While using camera I see that the brightness quality is low, even if I increase brightness I see the display a bit dull Is there any solution for these issues?

It too sometimes have problems with people hearing me on the other end. I also bought mine on ebay too. A quick fix is to buy a bluetooth headset it seem to work perfectly. I just wouldn't buy one on ebay because you can't return it if it is defective.

when I first bought it, I can't figure out how to make browser, SMS, etc functional. I downloaded Opera mini browser and just followed the instructions/settings that some of you guys posted, now its working great although there were minor flaws, battery does not last very long, I can't tell you how happy I am to have the best SMARTPHONE/PDA that is out there., in function, appearance, style, productivity, etc. I have downloaded a lot of JAVA applications/games and still hope that there will be a MS office version avaialble to Linux/Java that can actually allow editing, etc. Great job-Motorola!

you can view image files on this phone, jpg, etc. You can use your finger or any other pointed object on the touchscreen.....fingers can be a bit tricky.

The Opera setting for the Motorola a780 are a little different then the standard settings for Cingular. Open the Oper browser go in to setup and edit the profile. The Primary gateway IP is 66-209-11-32. The port is 8080 not 9201. Try this and the browser will work perfect. If it doesn't download the new Oper mini browser for free at www.getjar.com

chris, thnx for your help. i appreciate it. you're right, opera mini is much better. don't know why it didn't come with the phone, instead of the other version. perhaps they didn't have the mini version at the time. in terms of setting up my email, i still haven't successfully configured it yet. i can't seem to find the proper IP address for verizon.net to complete the incoming server field ..... i called verizon & spoke to 3 different people there & they are all incredibly incompitant. so i gave up. but i did figure out how to retrieve voicemail properly: 1. go to mail box 2. tap the 3-strip bar on lower left corner & go into 'service setup', then go to 'voice mail' 3. just put in your cell number & it will dail it everytime you hit 'retrieve' from the voicemail promp thnx again & let me know if you are able to send/recieve mms; i still can't, happy holidays, dave new york city

I don't have EDGE in my area so I cannot offer much help there. I had no problem setting up my POP3 email through the email setup. Just make sure that you use the IP address of the mail server and not the name(205.152.59.17 vs. mail.bellsouth.net). As I stated before the built in Opera web browser sucks. Download opera mini from the opera web site(for free), it works great.

I have the Singapore version of the A780, which unfortunately does not come with the IM client activated. It simply reads "offline" in the status bar, and there is no way to turn it "online." Does anyone know of a way that I can activate the IM client on this phone?

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply. (I'm not sure, but I think your response was intended for me.) Anyway, I'm not sure you understood my question. My question was related to trying to connect to the Internet and email when the phone isn't in Edge mode. (Depending on the area I'm in, my phone doesn't always display the Edge icon.) When not in Edge mode, the phone attempts to connect using the phone's CSD settings. This is where I have the problem because my phone won't connect using the CSD settings. By the way, you mentioned entering IP addresses for the email. I use AOL, which doesn't use POP3. AOL uses IMAP. IP addresses don't work for me, either. I have to use cwmx.com for the send setup and imap.aol.com for the receive setup. Again, thanks for the reply though.

I am a Cingular customer, and I was wondering why my phone only connects to the Internet and email when the Edge (E) icon is displayed in the status bar. It doesn't connect when the "G" is displayed. I guess with the G it's going through the CSD settings??? I have everything configured the way it should be - at least according to what has been suggested on this website. Is it normal to not connect to the Internet or for the email client not to work if the "G" is displayed? When the "G" is displayed, the phone starts to dial the number that I had entered in the setup section of the phone (14152441012) but then fails to connect. Also, I have a problem with the email... If I have the DNS server box checked in the setup section of the phone, the Internet will work but not the email. When I try to update the mailboxes, I get "host not found." As long as the DNS server box is not checked, I am able to update my mailboxes. Is this normal? According the what people have printed on this website, you're supposed to have the DNS server box checked. If anyone can help, please let me know. Sorry if this posting is confusing!

Whenever i get a message, the selected alert goes off 5 times, gradually upping the volume. Is it possible to play it say just once?? Also the ringer volume goes from low to high as well.. is it possible to set the ringer so as it starts with max volume??

Hi dave, This is probably cuz u have accidentally ejected the card. Just open the trans flash slot, push the card inwards with u'r thumbnail or something. It will eject itself out. Now push it back in to re-insert the card. Should work.

Thanks for the advice about using Yahoo for a homepage. I already have done that, though. My reason for wanting to access MEdia Net page is so that I could check my AOL mail through the browser. I'd also like to use the messenger programs, such as Yahoo, AIM, and MSN, which are accessible through the MEdia Net page. From the browser, when trying to log onto both the Hotmail and AOL websites, I get this error message reading that the pages can't be displayed until I enable javascript and cookies. I have a Motorola A780 phone, but I've been having trouble getting the browser to work. (I am a Cingular customer.) I have configured everything - at least I think I have. At this point, I am able to log onto the MediaNet homepage, but am not able to go any further. I get an error message reading: The file i.xhtml was not found. I have not idea what this file is or how to get it installed on my phone. If anyone knows about this and is willing to help me out, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate your help. :)

Amy, Frankly, I wish I'd bought a Treo 650. The setup will require patience and a lot of trial and error on your part. Some of the setup is quirky and since I don't know of a single American carrier that supports this phone, you have to do a lot of research yourself. Email me if you need help.

BTW my phone seems to scratch the flip glass(top side) on either side of the earpiece :( i traced it to the two small white peices that come in contact with the flip when open..... is anyone else having this problem??

Evan, Just say register later... doesn't give any problems and u can install and use the full version witout registering. Registration is just to help them collect some data i guess!! And as for my earlier querie, i figured out that GPRS\EDGE is set by service provided and we cant set it manually.. makes sense too why would u like to connect by a slower medium :)

Amy, EDGE is a faster way that WAP/GPRS to surf the web. It is like the difference between dial-up and cable/broadband. If you're in the USA, I've heard that only Cingular is supporting it at the moment. And if you use Cingular, then I'd say the internet is certainly NOT free.

Hi there. I am not sure what happened here. I have been using my hands free (non-bluetooth) and all of sudden, I don't hear anything from the phone without my hands free connected to the phone. However, I am strongly concerned with security (I do not understand why manufacturers do not highlight security features) and I need some questions to be answered before I would do so. Be so kind to give me an advice, please, you the owners of this unit. Does the mail client support IMAPs, POP3s, and SMTPs with authorization. Could you be more specific about the server-side SMTP settings that work for you. I suppose that the Opera browser supports HTTPS but I would like to have it confirmed explicitly. Are there any experiences using a SSH client? I have found some negative comments regarding MidSSH. They did not seem to reliable, though. Thanks in advance. P.S. Hi guyz one more query... i got a GPRS connection from my service provider, when i enabled it, the small G at the end of the signal indicator turned green. But all of a sudden when i woke up today morning, the G had changed to E!!! Just wondering, is it possible for us to choose b\w GPRS and EDGE or is it set by the service provider??

Hi all.... managed to figure out the first problem(i.e uninstalling apps). UK Motorola website provides operator's settings info for various telcos in most countries. Sadly, most if not all Asian countries are not in the list. In Singapore, M1 users can try port 8081 instead of 9201 as indicated on its website. Refer to other Moto models listed on the website for the rest of the data. Starhub's users can find all relevant info on its website.

I just got this phone today. It's a little harder to understand than my Nokia, but so far I like it. However, I'm wondering if there might be more software out there to connect it with the PC. I have a bunch of pictures from my old phone that I stored on my PC. I don't know how to move those pictures to my A780. I have the Motorola Mobile Phone Tools, but that doesn't seem to move pictures. With my Nokia Software Suite I could just drag and drop. Does Motorola have any equivelent software?

OK, I've worked with the phone all weekend; here's the status: 1. The phone now connects sporadically with Outlook. I can synchronize my Calendar and Task, but hit-n-miss with Contacts. 2. I can connect with the internet with the Opera browser and can receive email, but not send email. 3. I still don't see any solution to by "business first" use of the phone. If I want to call a hotel in Montreal, it's impossible using my current configuration with Outlook. The Phone Tools software is kind of interesting with its split screen (one for Outlook, the other for the phone), but I have a lot of contacts to rework in order to be "compliant" with the new software. Does anyone know of an easy fix?

Help! I'm having a bit of trouble in several areas with my week old A780: 1. All of my Contacts (3,300 of them) are organized by first name. This is ridiculous, since what if I wanted to put contact in for "Motorola", but don't know anyone who works there by their first name?! How can this be changed (say, like the Treo 600 I'm now using) to either company name or last name? 2. Does anyone know how to setup email for T-Mobile in the US? 3. I've had difficulty synchronizing with Outlook; the computer doesn't seem to recognize my phone. I've read other posts about similar problems; has anyone figured out how to correct it? BTW, if you live in England, you're in luck: there is a website (http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html) that has all of the setup info for multiple ISPs.

Press the little silver button on the left side of the phone that has the "lock" icon on it. This will help you slide the battery cover down.

Simply press and hold the unlock button under the voice command button and slide the back plate down until the plate slides off. Once you have done this simply remove your battery and the sim card slot is right there. insert your sim care and put the battery back in correctly and slide the back plate on untill it locks.

excellent phone, but one problem, sound volume can't be adjusted, there's a ring alert style where u can adjust to "loud" or "soft" etc, but no adjustment for volume of voice (ex. when the phone read the text messages for you). the default volume is hard to be heard even when u put the phone near your ears. If you owners of a780 knows how to adjust the volume pls post hear on how to. tnx.

Choose songs to play by tapping the box on the left of every title; 10. Tap Open after choosing songs to play; 11. Save Playlist; 12. Rename playlist; 13. Tap first song on the playlist; 14. I got the phone in Taiwan from a 神脑通讯 dealer 2 months back. In the package are 2 batteries, travel charger, destok charger, data cable & cd, dual-earpiece, manual, original pouch. MicroSD or Transflash is not included though. It's working fine here in Singapore - GPRS, browser, email, mms, and the basic functions. I have tried it with both M1 and Starhub lines. Saw one shop at Funan selling it for S$900+ w/o contract. I heard it won't be released full scale in Singapore although it's manufactured here, like several other Moto models. Overall, built is sturdy and compact considering the functions. Equipped with both keypad (on the cover) and touch-screen is refreshingly practical. Some functions can be accessed without flipping open the cover - call, sms, camera etc. Ringtone volume and speaker could be improved upon. Good sounding earpiece with retro look albeit slightly uncomfortable. Browser connection reasonably fast. No comment on 3rd party software as I do not install any. A nice-looking, well-built and designed phone.

HI Indy, I am from the Philippines as well and a proud owner of this unit for more than a month now. I agree with you, the perfect phone has yet to be born, but, I guess perfection depends on how each of us define it...I have no complaints with my A780 though I would be looking forward a better firmware in the future. The Calendar and Bluetooth in my unit work perfectly...the calendar, though, reacts a bit slower compared to those installed in Nokias and Ericssons... My unit came with a desktop charger for batteries...it also has some sort of dual charging wire(???) wherein which you can charge the battery in the phone and the spare... You might have been issued a defective unit, good thing you had it checked in the service center... Have a great day ahead!

When I bought this phone on July 2, 2005, I really thought that "this is the perfect phone". Sorry guys, the perfect phone isn't born yet. So I have to stick with this one since it cost me P32,000 here in the Philippines. But there are some great things about this phone, really. You can do many things with it, besides texting/calling functions, you can: take photos, video (1 hour and 50 mins of it!!!), great inbox for text (695 messages), sent (790 messgs.), etc., the security for the TRANSFLASH card is a great idea, cause unlike my NOKIA 6680, you can lock it so that no one can peek, steal, or copy your files. One thing that bogs me right now ist that my unit just suddenly can't open "in-a-flash" the CALENDAR and BLUETOOTH functions. So, I have to send it back to the service center. Also, the sound from the speakers are great. But one of the games (Motorola Basketball) can't be played because of lack of keys. Evel Knievel game has no sound. And the promised BOC or Battery Only Charger was not included in the package. Was I robbed, tell me??? Anyway, i'm looking forward to the Moto Q. God Bless!!!

My O2 mini got stolen, and I just got this phone after hearing so much about it. I use a Mac laptop, and had bought PocketMac software to sync with the O2. Unfortunately neither the in-built iSync or the PocketMac can sync with the phone, although I have transfered files through PocketMac. I am trying to load all my addressbook contacts to the phone, but it looks like the only way would be to send one entry at a time over bluetooth. Somehow I cannot get all the entries transfered at one time, it just accepts the first entry. If I transfer a vcard file, it exits in the middle of the file transfer with "vcard parse error".

I just bought this phone. It is a fabulous phone. This is the one I have been waiting for. I wanted a nice phone with a good PDA function. I didn't want to have Treo because it is too wide. I thought it looks funny to talk on that thing. SE 910 seems to be too big. People complain that the screen is too small. If that's the downside, then it is not a phone for you. A780 is little bigger than a regular phone but not as big as PDA-phone such as Treo or O2. I didn't like a big one but I still wanted to have the touch screen input method so that I don't have to type my schedule with numeric key pad. The clarity of this phone is excellent when it is flipped open and it is reasonable with a cover closed. I am an old ATT sim card user with Cingular service now. SMS/MMS work fine.

KP, Yes, it does have the T9 predictive text output. What's even better is that it remembers the words you most often type and make this part of the T9. I am from the Philippines and it even remembers the words in Tagalog, my local language, and put this up as part of the predictive text.

I got hold of this phone a week ago and all I can say is that it rocks! It perfectly fits my work and lifestyle. Unlike the others here who have posted negative comments, I am very happy with this phone. The package I got includes an extra battery and a bluetooth headset, which makes the quick battery life easier to deal with and calls a lot easier to receive. The functions have served me well so far, especially the document viewer. I now have all my important Excel, PPT and Word files in the phone for quick reference during meetings. I also have gotten used to using the stylus and am now using the phone as a notebook as well. I would say that this phone is designed for professionals like myself, but the younger ones can also benefit from its functions. All apps work great and I have never encountered the problems experienced by some of the users here. I hope I won't. :-) The external keypad also is a big help when texting while driving. This phone is more convenient to use than an XDA or any of the stylus based phones. I change phones very often but I guess I will stick it out with this model longer than any of my previous phones. Great phone! So far I have loaded movies, tv episodes, and mp3 albums into the phone, all worked great. It's got Real Player. I also managed to get a Gameboy Advance emulator running, thanks to the linux os, people can make all kinds of programs for it for free ^^

Well, the synchronizing via MPT isn't working still. The contacts addresses get messed up pretty badly and recurring appointments with exceptions in the pattern aren't transferred at all to the phone. Finally, the contacts categories are a mess either. MPT doesn't even pick up all the categories for a start... So far the base phone has been great. it has many great features such as voice activation. the voice activation does work with a wired headset but as my bluetooth headset is yet to arrive i'm waiting to see if it still works. i cannot get the wap or http browser to work on the phone. when i can get it to work the web pages are distorted. i'm paying for the $40 a month pda connect unlimited which i was told would allow me to connect my laptop via bluetooth... it doesn't. you have to pay for the $80 unlimited data connect plan to use your laptop or it will hang at "Registering your computer on the network". the phone is great and is feature rich but most of the features have issues with cingular service. my buddy has one too but his has different software on it and is completely different than mine so there seems to be different flavors of software. while i think the phone is great i am dissapointed that it hasn't been realeased in the US. i did spend 2 hours on the phone with a kind cingular tech trying to get everything working. so far, i can send/recieve sms messages and phone calls but that is it.

I got a fantastic mobile which is a PDA as well as normal mobile. Its fantastic to have this mobile and features are excellent like 1.3 MP camera , continuous video recording, documents viewer. photos editor, mainly am music lover, its fantastic MP3 player, GPRS with great downloadable speeds, memory is high and cpu speed is orsam. I got from singapore since we didnot have many here in India.

I posted this before but the info in it may be helpful to others out there that are having troublesetting the WAP & MMS.. Steven set the WAP up and said that the settings were the same as the V635 - GREAT!, I then went home, went to www.HelloMoto.Com (set for UK) and managed to get all the rest set up - except the email, I'll get that eventually.. I've ordered a 256meg T-Flash memory card, the phone can take up to 1GB afaik but the highest available so far is only 256meg. The A780 is a great phone with plenty of features, it speaks to you too! ie phone book entries and text messages etc! I only discovered that 2 weeks after getting the phone!! The A780 has loads more features too, and I'm glad I bought it - the Linux OS is fast, though not as straightforward as the others. The manual isn't too great, I had to work out how to enable 'Flight Mode' myself (Click the bettery strength bar up the top then 'Antenna Off'. To enable WAP and MMS for o2 [in the UK], go to www.HelloMoto.com, click on 'Operator Settings' and use the settings for the V635 (V620 for T-Mobile iirc). Job done! Enjoy! ;-)"

looks good, sounds promising, but extremely disappointing. if you like to reset your PDA and loose all your small setups, like ring tones, wallpaper...etc., every 3 days then this phone is what you are looking for. functions suddenly stop working, thats when you have to reset. Voice dialing does not work if phone is closed and the number is stored in the phone book AND THE SIM CARD. battery will show either 100%, 50%, or 20%. suddenly drops on you. No voice dialing via a bluetooth enabled car. sound on my sony ericsson car hands free is bad, people wont hear me well. I had to return it, was very unsatisfied, lost $130 in restocking fee. BAD EXPERIENCE, DONT BUY

I've had this phone for about a month now. As it's a Hong Kong model and I'm in Australia where there's no support for this device, it took me awhile to configure all the settings, but since I've got them up & running, I've found this phone to be fantastic. The email and internet browser applications are superb and very fast. The document viewer is great to study lecture notes on, or read ebooks, and the range of games available (check out for free downloads) is great. It's a bit bigger than some other phones, but for what you get crammed into it, the dimensions aren't that bad, and the phone isn't all that noticable in your pocket. The ability to sync the phone with a mac and pc is great, as is the ability to charge the battery through a usb cable. The battery isn't all that great (expect 3 days max with minimal usage), but can easily get you through the day. I'm very happy with this purchase, and if you're looking for a device that'll keep you mobile for a few days while you're away from the office, this has got everything you need. A big downfall however, is the lack of extra applications available for the phone. If you're looking for a smartphone that'll do everything, including brush your teeth for you, you might want to look elsewhere; but if you just want something that you can email/browse the web/play games/read docs/watch movies on, then you'll be very happy with this.

Greetings All... I've had the A780 for just under a week now. I'm in the US and have Cingular as a provider. I have a question... Does anyone else have problems clearing their "new voicemail" notifications? I got a voicemail the other day, and the phone flashed it's indicator. I listened to the voicemail, deleted it from my inbox, and then cleared the warning on my phone. Now, everytime the phone powers on, the "new voicemail" notification reappears even though I don't have any voice mail. Any help would be appreciated! Brett

Okay, I still cannot connect. But here is some more information on what I have tried. I got this from the DeviceAndSoftwareSettings PDF from Cingular. I got the phone and its great. I have Cingular and I have using the settings below in previous posts to get the Internet on the phone. The problem I have is using the phone as a router for my labtop (winXP) to browse the Internet. I used the motorola tools program and get his error meesage after it tries to verify username and password: "The PPP link control protocol was terminated. The GPRS network connection could not be established, make sure the GPRS network is accessible and that you have subscribed to the GPRS option." Has anybody go this to work? Hi, Anyone having trouble with the ringtones? For incoming UnKnown Numbers (unlisted numbers), it doesn't play the default ringer I selected. I read somewhere that all contacts should be stored to the phone and not the sim to avoid this problem. I've done that but the wrong ringtone still plays.

Hi, I just found out the calendar on the A780 uses wrong week numbers! It shouldn't have been too difficult to program the correct numbers, but this calendar thinks the first week of the year starts on 01-01-[any year] where as anyone can tell you the first week of the year is the first WHOLE week in january. So, in 2005 (week #1 starts on 3 january) this phone is constantly one week ahead. How lame...

This phone has problem with after first ring then either the call will dropped or goes into voicemail. My brother and I both purchased the same phone that has same problem. Moto had update the software and fixed under warranty, but same problem occured. Finally, I gave up and sold the phone.

Hi. A780 works perfectly well in the Philippines. In fact this is the phone I am using right now. I got it from globe at 19,000 pesos (18 months to pay with no interest) you can also get it from semicon but at 34 to 37k. it�s a nice phone. The motorola A780 is truly a smart phone in all its ramifications. It has a beautiful artistic design with great PDA functions. This phone can read your text messages back to you, it recognizes names in your contact list for voice dial without you having to program your voice,you can dial both internally using the stylus or externally using your fingers, there is a document viewer to view microsoft word, excel and power point,it also comes with EDGE for great browsing,bluetooth for wireless connections and an internal modem for dial up connection.The opera browser included also works well. For those who have families overseas, you'll find the world time function of the A780 very helpful. Now you know the appropriatew time to make your calls to your family and friends who are abroad. Since no phone is perfect, there are some flaws too,but not that serious to make you not want to own this bad boy.For those who complain about battery life, here are some tips: 1.Disable bluetooth if you aint using it. 2.Reduce backlight to about 20% (You can still see the screen at this rate). 3.Set backlight sleep time to 5 mins. 4.Put a check mark by battery Save option under power management. Someone also complained of no free games.I think with that, it depends on where your phone is shipped from as in what market. I don't know about the Hong Kong or US versions but the Taiwan market has three games on it(3D). In terms of business functions like using microsoft word to edit or power point and excel, I think there might be updates for that in the future.It would be nice if you can not only view microsoft documents but also edit them. Setting up voicemail can be tricky on the A780. Make sure you have your voicemail number programmed under the divert calls settings too or else your voice mail may never come up when callers call. Synchronizing from computer to mobile is really easy except that sometimes if there are no work addresses on your PC, they are synchronized to the A780 as work addresses. To configure the motorola A780 for e-mail, you'll need the actual IP ADDRESS of your service provider.Also there is a mix up with the city and state settings eg: Columbia, SC U.S.A is displayed as SC,Columbia U.S.A.The speaker phone is loud enough and the MP3(Real)player plays crispy music but it is kind of selective when it comes to playing movie/video files.You'll need a flash card if you plan on downloading music files, saving pictures etc because the internal memory is only 48MB.Personally, the motorola A780 is awesome.If only it was a CDMA phone then customers would have really enjoyed the quality of Verizon instead of T-mobile or Cingular.

Any idea whether the Motorola A780 firmware would be updated? ... May be they could fix the Ringer/vibrate problem. One of the other features I found missing was how do I change the defaut ringtone. I am only able to change ringtones individually for each person... what about the default ringtone... May be thew should also add a Send business card option. Currently business cards received from a Nokia phone was seen as garblled text on my 780. I wish they could add a full screen area like the P910 for handwriting. Apart from all these the phone is very very coool. Hope they come out with more apps and games to support this phone.

The motorola A780 is really a great phone. No phone can be perfect so I understand that naturally it should have some flaws.Some of the little flaws are: When synchronizing from PC to the phone,the ciity and state sections are misplaced.If you only have a home address on ur PC it would be synchronized as a work address. The server settings for e-mail is really an IP address that your ISP should give you an dnot a pop or smtp address,the Joy stick is a little bit off and you cannot edit microsoft word, excel or powerpoint. It is still a great phone though. The motorola A780 WAP settings for cingular is as follows.. APN:wap.cingular Username:[email protected] password:cingular1 DNS Server is usually left blank for first slot. CSD settings Dial in Number:14152441012(call cingular to verify) username:[email protected] Line Type:ISDN Baud Rate: Auto DNS Server: This should have a check mark and is usuall 66.209.11.61 Make sure you call cingular to verify these settings if they dont work for you.Hope this helps.

Since there's a conversation going on, I'm wondering if any of you have the following problems: 1) State & City is reversed in the phone. i.e. Toronto Ontario is displayed as "Ontario, Toronto" in A780 2) When you click "detail" in a contact, home address/city/state...etc is inserted between "work postal code" and "work country" 3) Anyone able to insert "-" in a phone # field? Like 555-555-5555 instead of 5555555555 4) Even after I've mapped my fields correctly, when syncing from computer to A780, work address fields always get filled up first before home address fields. i.e. if I have only home address on the computer side in MPT, after sync to Mobile phone side, the address is sync to work address on in the mobile phone side in MPT.

Initially I am quite satisfied with this one due to most of my inquire can be satisfied. Just for reference the price, in TW it is around US$430- with 2 battery and charger,discs. actually this motorola a780 works anywhere in the world, but it depends on which sim card you gonna put in. for example in the USA you can buy a T-mobile sim card with 1100 minutes for $120 + you gonna have a phone number. but you have to but minutes in 365 days so you can have the same phone number other wise you get nothing. like me i use it over seas with a prepaid sim card and it is free incoming. it is the best phone out there.

Peter, I have a sucky carrier (Fido in Canada) so i always got cut when I'm driving (say ~70km/hr). However, if I stay at the same location, there is no problem receiving signal. As for PDA function, it's not perfect compared to Palm (I was a Palm Vx user). Since MPT is not 100% compatible to Outlook, some fields cannot be sync correctly (birthday, assistent, manager...etc). I usually input data directly to the phone window in MPT instead of compouter window in MPT to avoid sync problem. Phone volume is ok but i don't consider it loud. One cool function that I found out recently is this phone can read you the text messages when u have the voice command on!!

Hi David, I understand that you can't hook it up the phone in the U.S. I can't either, I was told by cingular that the phone is a overseas phone and it's not for the U.S. And I should called Motorola which I did 1-800-331-6456 And I was told by them also, they can't help me. The cingular store where I brought it told me it can be set up. So I'm going to called him again and see him next week, and I will let you know.

I agree w/ Steve. The PIM still needs a lot of improvement. I used to be a Palm user and inputting data on either the computer or my palm and then sync afterward would not create problems. On A780, it's better to just copy data from the phone to the computer as syncing it will mess up my phone data sometimes.

I have just received my Motorola A780 and all outward appearnces are that it is a pretty fair phone. Aesthetically it looks good. Operationally it leaves some to be desired. 1) Mechanically the buttons for front panel dialing are stiff and somewhat unresponsive. 2) The Linux OS while more stable than Microsoft SP 2003 or Palm OS 5.4 still leaves a lot to be desired. 3) Being that this phone is touted as a business phone, my particular application, there are issues with the PIM that need resolving. I have over 800 contacts in my contacts database and typically sort by Company name. This PIM does not allow for it and is clearly tailored toward the personal user rather than a high cap business user. This needs to be cleaned up. 4) I would like to see a vibrate and ring mode rather than ring only or vibrate and then ring. 5) Touch screen response is rather sluggish even after repeated calibration. In my opinion the people who designed this as a business phone were either under 18 or have never worked in a real world environmnet. This is clearly a multimedia phone and not designed as a business tool. Lots of work to do here guys and I am hoping that there will be a firmware update post haste.

Anyone has the following problems? 1) If you input only one address in a contact in MPT computer side, then sync, whether you'e input the address as work or home it always show up as work address in A780. However, if you input two address (one business and one home), then they are sync correctly to A780. 2) When you click details when looking at a contact, the home address, city, state field...etc are inserted between work City field and work Country field? 3) City and States shows up reversed? Like it'll show "California, Los ngeles" instead of "Los Angeles, California" 4) Anyone is able to insert "-" within a phone # on A780? Like "444-444-4444" instead of "4444444444" Stardust

In the newsgroup alt.cellular.motorola has been reported about the buggy sychronizing of contacts with MPT as well as other websites. I have mailed BVRP about the problem some days ago, but they don't even seem to bother to answer. So the good news is: it's not you doing something wrong, the bad news is that we bought something that still isn't working...

I got my A780 working just fine with Cingular; Browsing's much faster with EDGE than it was with my old MPx220. Call Cingular up and ask for the WAP settings. I'd list them here, but I can't find the piece of paper that I wrote them on, and the passwords are masked (*****). Ask to get transfered to someone more technical if you get a clueless rep. Regarding POP3 e-mail... Works fine for me, just put in the IP address of your POP3 server, not the name. Read somewhere that there may be issues with DNS not resolving e-mail server addresses. JC

Just had a meeting with Motorola Engineers at Taipei office. The OS Is Locked, so for the time being, it is Not Possible to install Linux based software due to current software liscensing agreements. If your service provider supports the feature, you can connect to Hotmail and Yahoo! mail via the Opera 7.5 browser( 2 out of three aint' bad I guess), though apperently my current provider(FarEastern) has some failed to mention this over the last two weeks of trouble shooting the issue. They haven't actually figured this out yet so I'll be notifying them as soon as they return my call. As for other issues like, Gmail and third party software, he assured me that it was on the way, though I'm not holding my breathe. The phone it self Does Not Support Some Major Secure Connections or Protocols. So you can't do any banking or business transactions like personal banking or shop at Amazon or ebay. Can't use paypal either. That's it for now.... -Nam.

Just looked around and I'm feeling worse than before... I bought my phone in early January so the first post about the A780 wasn't around then.. Only positive things about the 910 and 910i though. I've tried it and it seems that it is all that the A780 is trying to be. And there is a slew of third party software available for it. Apperently it supports all secure and non-secure connections via browser and email client. Seems to be cheaper than the A780 as well.

We all have our reasons as to why we buy a mobile phone and what features we are looking for... to some people using a phone and its features in some ways may seem not worthy for another�s. I was expressing my likes about the phone and if u don�t like my likes u can shove it. If you so in need of using Microsoft software u should have bought a Microsoft PDA and shut ur mouth. Any human being with little intelligence and small software background should be able to know before hand (even if there was marketing says other wise) to conclude not to buy a Linux OS if they need Microsoft programs in the first place. In response to both postings about the OpenOffice.... Guys please take into consideration that this phone Does Not, And Is Incapable of running Linux based software. The base operational code on the phone( and I mean base) is actually more Based on Linux, than Linux based. Even the technician and the Engineer that I've been dealing with at the Taipei office have conceded to this point after minimal questioning. OpenOffice is really great on a Linux desktop, and may be useful on other phones, but is Not Compatible with the A780. To date, the A780 is Only capable of running "J2ME" based software. As for the guy who just bought the phone and loves it.. I'm really not trying to be rude or obnoxious, but did you really pay all that money to look cool and be able to make calls while the phone was flipped closed? It is actually cheaper to get a regular flip phone and 10GB Creative MuVo, than to buy this phone. The concept behind it is to have ultimate portability in hopes of maximizing efficiency. Hence the PDA features.( Which don't really do nearly what they claim to) Thanks for the offer of OpenOffice by the way. I wish that the A780 were compatible. As for my issue with Motorola Taiwan.....It's still not resolved. They sent me an email claiming that it is somehow possible, but weren't exactly sure as to how and that if I had any other questions to forward them to customer care instead of them as though the issue had been resolved. ....Didn't make any sense to me when I read it neither. I just purchased this phone after seeing lots of nokia phones in the market.. i must admit the A780 is a eye catcher when i am holding the phone in public people stare at it. It almost impossible to find this phone were I live so its distinct and elegent futuristic phone. Now about the OS... its amazing.. Linux is truely gold. I have used PDA with microsoft and I have thrown the thing into the garbage cause it keeps crashing and earasing my memory. For those who just talk without experience i will tell u this.. This phone is stable.. clean.. outstanding quality in video and sound killing any competitor i assure u. The best thing of all is I can use the phone while its closed to make calls or go through the menu listen to music or send message or view calls.. or while its flipped open.. Thats sooo daaaaam coool!! peace out Microsoft losers!

If you are buying a phone for it's internet or email capabilities, Remember To Try Before You Buy!!!! 1) Be sure that the phone works well with your service providers network. Surf the web on it for a few minutes and check it out. 2) Be sure that the phone supports secure connections. (SSL, WTLS...) If it doesn't, you will likely be unable to access your email. 3) Be sure that both the browser and email client have options ( not just "Delete"). The email client should offer support for Secure an Non-Secure POP3 and IMAP, as well as Changeable Ports. If not, and you use Gmail, Yahoo or many other POP/ IMAP email providers, you won't be able to access their servers. Hope this is useful to anyone else who is contemplating making such an investment into phone producers R&D projects. -Nam

K.... Tried the Reqwieless Emailviewer and although it works great with Hotmail, it's no so hot with Gmail. Still a step in the right direction. Thanks. FYI... There's a mobile Mozilla in the works called Minimo. Unfortunately I cant figure out how to install it. Assuming it's compatible with the A780. I new I shouldn't have sold the second computer. Now I'll have to install Linux on this machine.

Ok, so here's the verdict... Just talked to a girl named Lisa at the Taipei office and she has no clue. I asked about where I could find the claimed, "wide range of applications" that could be installed on the phone and she apologetically said, "there aren't any." She wanted me to drop the phone off at their office to have it looked at. I explained that I've already spent a day tracking down an office that can fix the phone and that the last time that I came, no one would serve me because it was lunch time. I explained that the ONLY time that I could come by was their lunch, and she said that there was no way that some could take their lunch a little earlier or a little later to deal with my phone. I explained that this issue is escalating and that my warranty is running along with my patience, while they ate their lunches but she didn't seem to care much. She explained that they just turned on a phone and that it seemed to work just fine. This, after the fact that I�d explained to her many times, that the internet services work, but only 5% of the time. Thus you would have to use it for at least a day or two to find the problem. Again she was indifferent. Thanks Motorola!!! My decade and a half of patronage, paid back in full. If you are looking into buying this phone, be sure that you can get a full refund should there be any problem at all. There is likely to be one. I�ve looked around and found that these are becoming consistent issues. Problems is, you�ve gotta look past the great reviews by people who are only speculating. Too few if any, of which, have actually used it for any period of time.

I can't seem to get my Gmail or hotmail to work. Not on the browser as Opera supports neither, nor on the email client. This renders my phone useless to me. I was also under the impression that I'd be able to find applications for it, but have yet to find anything other than games and ringtones. What do they have to do with business? It is the fourth linux phone in the Motorola line and is very refined ... I enjoy every moment using it ... Right now there is a dearth of Linux applications... Motorola phones are garbage my friend bought a v600 and a v80 as soon as it came out 1st v600 - dropped it once! and the camera broke 2nd v80 - dropped it once! and the speaker broke As for me im currently using a v400, which has never been dropped but the speaker volume on the loudest setting is low as hell! my old Sony ericsson t68i which is 2.5 years old and been dropped and thrown god knows how many times and still is running like there is no tomorrow.

This phone is great but the technology is not well accepted worldwide ... the voice will work since it is a quad band but the data like surfing the internet and email access would remain to be seen depending on your service provider. One of the downfall is the ringtones you could hardly hear them especially if you are a noisy environment and it doesn't vibrate together with the ringtone. You must select either vibration or ringtones really for me quite disappointing considering all the features that embedded on the phone. Motorola please fix the problem!

When I had this phone I never remembered that I received the calls in other words I have missed all the calls simply because the phone rings was so LOW. You could hardly hear it even if you use the MP3 as your ringtones. Gladly I have returned the phone. Very sad experienced!

Great specification but again this unit is only made to be used with Vodafone (or maybe Verizon or Sprint). It will most likey NOT be available in the US. Any phone that has a UMTS/GSM on it will not be released in the US. The price of this phone a sky high over $1000 range and not many people will be able to afford this kind of money for just a phone...

If you want to buy this phone buy it by all means it is a good phone but not all features will work especially if this phone is not available in your country but beware not to buy this phone from COMMUNICATION TELECOM INTERNATIONAL based in New York USA for sure you won't get a Service after Sales. They only after your money and doesn't want to know you after they have sold you the phone. Too bad and disgusting!

Being you in the media with Motorola I hope this people will listen to you and eventually will help me. You see, I recently bought a mobile phone Motorola A780 and because of my being a compulsive buyer (I must admit) and desperate to own this type of mobile phone I decided to buy the phone through the internet. Not only that I am a compulsive buyer but this phone is not available in Australia. I have come acrossed with GSMArena.com and found that this phone is available in different stores in America. I decided to buy this phone from Communication Telecom International based in New York USA. I paid a lot of money and I expect some Service after Sales (I hope Service after Sales still works nowadays). To my surpised when the phone was delivered in Australia it came with the Chinese Manual which I can't understand the language. Likewise, I can't connect through the internet as well as sending/receiving email. I believe these are some of the features of this phone. But it is not working on my phone. I have noticed the phone was embedded with a GoTone browser meaning the phone was imported from China. Vodafone Australia is my service provider and they have help me to set up all the settings so I can surf the net and send/receive email but to no avail the phone still detecting "network error". I have asked help from the Communication Telecom International (where I bought it) and they seem not to be interested in helping me after they had made the sale. I only need a contact email address of GoTone in China so I can address my queries to this people. I hope you will be able to help me. Looking forward to hearing from anyone of you soon. Your help will be very much appreciated.

no only cool, it really stronger than SEP900. i think we can call it the world most useful smartphone so far.... i love it so much ....so much ...and so much....u guy know what is the price?? it just launched last month at china..and price around RenMinBi 8000-9000... (equal RM 4000).the internel memory is 48MB no T.flash max . The T.flash card can support to 1GB. Cool ?? and with 1.3 Megapixel D.camera, can read m.word document...no limit video capture depend on size of memory card. i really love it ,but too expensive...

1) before ask to send u e-mail pls give your e-mail! 2) i'm sure he phone have by default 64MB. 3) i hove have improve the use of bluetooth (see A768 comment) 4) i think the keypad outside is more easily to broken. 5) Never one know about the software version? about what u can do with linux ? i like this kind of mobile!

When I first saw this phone, I wasn't too keen on the idea of having yet another flip phone... I was after a slide phone and instantly fell in love when I came across the black version of the Siemens SL65! The only problem with that phone was that it didn't have Bluetooth or caller ID!! I really really really think that Siemens and Motorola should come together to make a new phone... all the features of the Motorola A780 packed into the Siemens SL65 design!! That would be a phone that would sell out within hours of going on sale!! Any comments please email me!

You are wrong, Arun K. The max available T-Flash card is 128 MB. And the E398 comes with one of 64 MB.

If u guys read most of the reviews,Motorola and Sandisk produced the same type of T-Flash cards for all the upcoming models.E398 wuz the 1st.U can use the same card for HPs that has the external T-Flash card slot.
