Motorola V557 - User Reviews

  • This phone can be bought @ wirelessunlimitedshop.com

  • This phone has the best keypad for T9 compared to sidekick 08, samsung, and the CLIQ.

  • I've had cell service since 1992, this phone was by far the best ever put together. Easy to operate, took quality pic's, easy for storing what you may need later. Sure with someone had enough smarts to make another as good. The trash being put out today is just that "TRASH". If AT&T thinks everyone wants to call them so they seem to embed the numbers on your service. Disgusting!!!!!!

  • ilove this phone for big numbers/camera and dash cradle hands free. pleas tell me where i can get another since discontinued. radio shack used to carry after att. can;t find one now. please help [email protected]

  • use the calendar. certain family members set an alarm for my birthday on accident using it. i wasnt happy but i learned how to use the phone. just go to a date and one of the options should be set an alarm

  • Is there a way to set an alarm several days in advance on this phone? I see how to set an alarm for the next 24 hours; but what if I need the reminder several days in advance. Anyone know? Thank you,

  • I've had this phone for like three years now and it's been great however I think it has done its time. I don't really have any big problems with it except its lack of updated features. So basically its a good phone but its outdated

  • Where are you getting you phone. I thought that they had been discontinued?

  • I've had this phone for 3 years. It's been great. I'm now getting a brand new phone tomorrow, haven't had to upgrade.

  • I've had this phone for several years and it works like a dream. I use it continuously in and out of the car. I have a built-in hands free cradle using the knife edge connection. This beats the heck out of blue tooth connectivity. The speaker and mic are great. I agree with the comments about the bumping of the side switches, but that's nothing compared to the versitility all over the world. The best GSM quad band I've ever had.

  • All I have to say is that this phone is crap! The only decent thing would probably be the camera, actually I take that back--it's just crap...worst cell EVER! >.

  • had this phone for over 3 years,,it works like a charm,,I work at a hospital and constantly around x-rays and mri machines. the battery chugs along like a semi,,and the phone performs like a champ.great tough phone..

  • not happy at all with this unit. have been stuck with it for 2 or 3 years. #1 problem is the side control buttons, whenever you bump during activites it changes from loud ring to another option and as a truck driver 18 wheeler, i cannot hear it. #2 problem is the volume, i must use the speaker button and even that does not allow good hearing. volume selection is set at 7, the highest and to no avail.

  • just to let everyone know, if ur fone stops charging, clean the charge socket. i was mad for so long cuz i used to wiggle the charger around everytime i charged it. then i decided to clean the charge hole and now its fine. same with the camera, if its blurry, clean the lens. ive had my v557 for 2 years and its still works fine except for 1 problem, i cant download messages that my friends send with pics, videos, and audio. if u can help, plz email me [email protected]

  • I have this phone and I love it for my work! I have been using it for 9 months and have had no issues to speak of! The battery life is outstanding and I would buy a new one when this one gives out!

  • I had the V551 model from Cingular and it was a decent phone. The biggest problems I had with it were. 1. The charger only works for a few months and then won't charge the phone anymore without getting it plugged in at the perfect angle. 2. It got super quiet and I could barely hear people so I sent it in within my year and got a replacement which I didn't have that problem with. I replaced it with the LG CU 500 which is a great phone so far.

  • Shortly after the warranty ran out my screen started flickering. If I flip it open to answer a call it will hang up. The camera isn't really good for much. For some reason the ring tone would always default back to the "Hello Moto" one. Wouldn't recommend it.

  • the screen went blank permanently after 1 year ...when the warranty out. all my ringtones i bought were on that phone.

  • This is a horrible phone in every aspect. The worst - battery life. After an overnight charge it is good just for 20 min. talk time. Keep it in your pocket - and after a short time you'll find it copmletely discharged. The second worst are both displays. Main is blurry, pixelated and illegible, unless you polish it before each use. The third worst - all other features - performance, reception, etc. I will avoid Motorola (any) at all costs!

  • Yeah its a Failure.

  • so i have had the motorola V557 for about a year and a half. at first i loved. but about 10 months after i got it, the screen started going blank, the phone won't charge, the camera is messed up and is taking horrible blury pictures, the speakerphone is all static, and the phone started falling apart...literaly. this phone is great for very short term use. but other than, avoid it at all costs.

  • This device is a good performer but the phone will not charge after 8 months. This apparently a fault in this model. The charger port goes bad. Avoid at all costs.

  • I liked the features of this phone, however, I have had major issues with this product. I originally had a v551 on which the screen went blank. My replacement phone was a v557, which was fine until about a year later the phone's inner and outer display went blank. I received my replacement v557 and that same day the phone's screen bagean to flicker. The next day I powered it down and for about two hours was unable to get the phone back on. Cingular's customer service and warranty department were no help at all in trying to rectify my situation with this phone. They are sending me a replacement v557, which I have no faith in working properly. I will update this opinion when I receive the replacement phone.

  • Fantastic Phone. I went from Nokia 6340i to the Motorola V557. I have used it for a month now and compared to the Nokia I had, you can hear on this phone. You never loose signal. The Nokia was a GAIT phone so it was always looking for signal. You always had to wait to use. No more with this phone. Camera is fantastic! I use my phone for business and I have used it for 2 days now without having to charge the battery. Of course, compared to what I had before, anything is better.

  • My friend just gave me this phone because the current phone I had broke (physically cracked when I dropped it). This phone drops calls all the time compared to my Nokia. I have the same carrier - just placed my sim card into this one - and I drop calls on the way home from work whereas with the nokia, I NEVER did. Also, battery life is terrible. I actually ordered a new battery (yes OEM) and it lasts only marginally longer than the used one. Very disappointed and will have to buy a new phone anyway.

  • this phone is horrible. it gets stuck and selected buttons will work and others won't. it also calls people randomly. i had the phone for 8 months before it started doing all of this craziness and i did not do any damage to my phone. when i finally got them to send me a replacement, it took 3 days before that refurbished phone also got stuck randomly. i cannot call out. the cingular instore rep said they see so much problems with this phone. it sucks. don't buy it.

  • if this phone is anything like the v551 you will be happy with it,i have not used the bluetooth yet.video and picture are great, plus it is easy to hold with its rubber like trim.

  • The bluetooth makes me sad. It randomly turns off or calls people that I dont want to call. When I'm on the phone with someone and someone else calls, it turns off. (for no apparent reason) Then I turn it back on, and its says full battery for about 10 minutes and then dies. And i do it all over again. Not good at all.

  • this phone is apsolutely awesome i kicked it half way down a football feild and it drilled a kid and it still works

  • I got this phone about two weeks the bluetooth not working properly and the ring tone is crappy. The picture and video quality is good though.

  • This phone is a TANK. I've abused it endlessly -- dropped it, stepped on it, spilled on it, you name it -- and it still works well. The battery life is crappy but that's true of every cell phone I've ever used (and not just Motorolas, either).

  • Just purchased the phone a few days ago. I gigured I was due for an upgrade because the last phone I had didn't even have a camera. I have no clue about the multiple bells and whistles when it comes to cell phones but I can tell you this much: I have had cingular for about 6 years now and I receive very poor, if any reception within my home (something to do with my aluminum siding or some BS). As you may have guessed, this almost defeats the purpose of using the cell phonefor long distance. The Motorola V557 seems to give me one more bar of reception and this little bit helps out a great deal. I guess I haven't had the phone long enough to know about any problems yet, and with me being a guy, I haven'tread the book yet either...lol. I do hope I end up finding a way to decrease the font size so more people appear on the screen when accessing names.......anyone have any advice? (be polite!)

  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my V557 with the following exceptions. (1) The bluetooth connection drops periodically and (2) the ring tone sounds very garbled, almost like the battery is going low or the speaker got wet (niether of which has happened). I took it to a Cingular dealer who said he hadn't ever heard that complaint and couldn't find anything wrong. Regardless of what ringtone I use, it is distorted and garbled. Otherwise, I enjoy the phone.

  • I've been using the v557 for over a month so far, and it's been working without any major problems. The reason I pick this phone was that I already use the v330 and I'm familiar with the interface, and I've got most of the extra stuff for it. I read the problems experienced by most people on this thread, I hope I don't run into the same things.

  • This phone has been nothing but trouble for me. I have had Cingular for only four months, and I have already had to get four replacements for this phone. It SUCKS! I'm tired of it. It does't charge, it spazzes out- turning on and off every few seconds automatically. I can't even leave it on long enough to press two buttons! When it is closed, it just stays off. It doesn't work. Everything about this phone is horrible! Instead of getting another replacement for this phone, and going through the same frustration, I decided I'd buy a whole different brand of phone-Samsung. I wanted specifically a Motorola flip phone, but what a bad choice. For all you people who want a Motorola phone, it is a waste of everything! Not worth it. Really.

  • Oh good grief! Spare me from this phone and from Motorola. Never again. I have had it 5 months and already had to have it replaced once. The replacement is no better than the first one. And Motorola goes out of their way to be as un-helpful as possible. Their idea of great service is to ship it to them and do without a phone for three weeks while they make up their minds if they are going to grace you with something remotely close to what you paid for...... a working phone. Cingular (my service provider) is no better. I spent 47 minutes on hold with them before I ever got to talk to a real live human being. All tolled, I was on the phone for 1 hour and 23 minutes. They arranged for sending me this replacement phone (which was "refurbished". Didn't I pay for a new phone? If I wanted a used one, I'd have gone to ebay. The first one would drop calls, lose signal, and sometimes just turn itself off. The replacement one has horrible garbled reception, drops calls, and sometimes goes directly to voice mail even though I have what it indicates is a full signal and fully charged battery. And it gives me no notification that I have missed that call, and no notice that I have received a voice mail. I can't tell by looking at it whether it is working or not. My only option is to turn it off, remove the battery, reinstall the battery and restart the phone. At least that way, a couple of times a day I can check to see if I have missed anything or not. Why should anyone have to do that? Goodbye Moto

  • I have had nothing but headaches with this phone. Literally 80-90% of my calls drop and about 60% are so garbled as to be useless. I am trying my best to get this phone replaced because I might as well not have a cell phone than continue with this junk.

  • V 557 is JUNK!!!!!!!!!!! I hate the V557! going to try and change it but have had it more than 3o days. EVERY call is garbled, the voice quality is crap! if i have to sell it on ebay and get something else I will, my Nokias never had any problems.

  • Hi I am KC, I really was very happy starting off with my phone. The first phone was fine starting off, then the key broad & screen started to shut off. First thinking maybe I didn't charge it completed but found out that wasn't the problem. I called my service they tried to help but still was having problems. They changed my phone out to a new Mot.v557,still having problems. Called my carrier again due to the fact that I have ins.& with in the 30days period also. My phone has been changed out 5 times. My phone was change out to an Sony Ericsson Z520a. The Ericsson has nice feactures but volume & size didn't work for me. I call today 7-14-06 to my carrier that I wasn't happy with this phone also. The man I spoke with stated he must speak with his manager because they have changed my phone out so many times. He got back with me & stated that they could send me back another Mot.v557 or Nokia 6102. I ask was this a better phone less problems but he really couldn't say only that it was compare close to the Mot.v557. He also stated that they have changed out my phone so many times this would be the last time they would exchange the phone if I still have problems with the phone. Now that's something & another time I was told if I was still having problems with the phone call them back. Now I have read that I am not the only person having problems with this phone. I am hoping that the next phone they send work out because this is the most problem I have had with any phone. I have never had this problem with a Mot.phone.************************

  • i hate that phone! Really! it's gone crazy! ive got an sms from my service provider. it had some characters like @߀...etc at first. then the phone had shown some parts of the messages in the memory. later it showed the messages that i had erased before! DONT BUY IT! i mean that!

  • I couldn't give this phone away if I wanted to. It drops calls constantly. I can't have a converstation with someone without it hanging up at least 5 times. I have run out of patience with it. I'm getting a new phone. I went against my better judgement and strayed away from Nokia's because Motorola's are more attractive. But it is not worth it. Nokia is by far the best!! Despite what carrier I have it always works. I have owned 2 motorola's and the other one did the same thing.

  • i have had this phone for about 4 months now and i must say this is the best phone i have ever had. nice framerate, clear pics, web browser, etc. The live ticker ability is compatible with this phone which tells you what you need to know at times such as sports updates, weather and whatnot. This phone has to have something like a magnesium reinforced rollcage because this thing can take its licks. no dust behind the screen. i dunno about you guys but if you want to increase your battery life run your phone to the brink of being dead and charge it up entirely overnight. it extends the battery life each time that you do this. It is best to unplug it as it gets done charging to prevent overcharge. while trying this with your phone do not continuously unplug your phone while charging, the battery will record the charge level and it will not charge to the maximum limit the next time it is charged. in a nutshell this phone is the greatest and my battery charge will last me 41/2 days!

  • its a real nice phone the reception is great

  • I love my V557!!! Awesome reception here in NYC!!!

  • I have had this phone for about a week now and I like it a lot so far. It has a great feel in hand, the buttons are nice size, it is very user-friendly and it is durable. I am pretty rough on phones and this puppy can take it.

  • It's pretty good. I've had it for almost a year and haven't had too many problems. But what I don't like about it is: the battery doesn't seem to last long enough; it's heavy; it's slow (the search function is slower than the user such as when using the short cut to the directory); I've never been able to get the email to work properly; it bangs up really easily (mine looks like it's been through war); drops calls about once a week (could be service with Cingular and not a problem with the phone). Oh and the call log sort of sucks because it only logs the received last call not everytime that person called. But the Pros are: clarity; picture screen; menu options.

  • Volume is way too low in both modes. Accessing the menu key is difficult at best. Using this phone as a hard core professinoal phone, leaves this phone with a lot to be desired. It perhaps would be of better service if it were used as a paperweight. But, frilly stuff sells and that is what everything is about, pizzaz over substance. I would gladly take my I710 back anyday. This phone reminds me of people who drive slow in the passing lane.

  • I like the phone quite a lot; it replaces a V551 that I dropped overboard a couple of months ago. The phone's worked great since then; no problems, no hangs, just works. Battery life is a little shorter than the spec says, but still very good. One problem: When I'm dialing the phone or entering text messages, the DTMF tones are audible to anybody nearby. That is not only annoying (especially sitting in a meeting!), but a potential security concern. If any of you know how to disable the tones when pressing the keys, while still allowing the tones to be transmitted during a call, I'd be grateful to learn how. My wife's Sony-Erikkson lets the tones be replaced by simple, soft keyclicks or even turned off entirely (but still transmits them during phone calls). Thanks

  • well im about too buy v557 this phone is unique to me my cousin has one and shes very impressed on the technology and i was too when i do get this phone i hope that it will give me at least an 80% or higher satisfaction and really to think about it the only thing important to me is calling and recieving calls im not to skeptical about the other features.

  • dude this phone rocks it does everything way better than the razr

  • I did the same thing and replaced a Razr with this phone. Had the dust issue on the display ( and I kept it in a case ) and I couldn't hear out of the earpiece. It was the second Razr....first had the keypad lighting go out. I got the V557 which seems a lot more rugged and I like it much better already.

  • I just recently ordered to motorola v557... I am getting rid of my razr because of all of the problems that i have had with it...i hope that i don't have the same problems with this one

  • I like this phone. Good sound volume. (I had to get a replacement from Cingular because the first one lost it's sound volume after about a minute into use. Cingular didn't give me any problems replacing it). Limited ring tones, I guess they want you to spend a bunch of money buying ring tones.

  • This phone looks pretty ugly. It looks to generic.

  • I love this phone. It's rugged, calls are clear, and it has lots of good features. This is the best cell phone I've ever had.

  • I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to change the setting when you push down the phone symbol to see yor recent calls. When I push it down, I only get the dialed calls and not incoming and dialed calls. Thanks

  • well it's pretty much like the the V551 if not identical. i had the same problem with the speker volume. the thing was cranked way up and i still had to press it against my ear to hear but alas my friends there is ways to over come thes obstacles. i downloaded a P2K tool named Pktools and connected my phone via USB cable it which gave me acess to all settings. and turned the earpeice setting up to 4. now its much better but it seem to be like that for most vxx phones

  • Dropped calls, volume cranked up and barely being able to hear, and when pushing the buttons, it can't keep up when your typing in a number or text rapidly. Hard to explain that, but you'll see for yourself.

  • Some great features, but phone had too many problems. Within a few weeks of ownernship, screen would black out and then turn back on randomly, dropping calls, etc. Reseating the battery seemed to help, but only for a few days at a time. Bluetooth drops a lot too. Dissapointed since this was supposed to be the model that "fixed" all the problems in the V551.

  • It is like my Moto V550 ! A good phone with one of the best 640x480 camera! It has what a phone should do but why only 5MB internal memory ?????

  • Responding to judy 2/2/06. Bought new phone 12/6/06. It kept going "dead" about every week. Shop took battery out. Shook it and it was OK. Asked for and got Warrantee replacement phone. Worked better for 3 weeks and now the phone is suddenly dead. Won't work plugged into car. Won't charge. Shop where I bought it no help. What do I do now...anyone have answers? This phone is only 3 weeks old. Cingular help line was NO HELP either. They say go back to shop. Shop says talk to Cingular. For 100 bucks I should get better. kk

  • To reply to the previuos posts: The V557 has external camera. Read more about the Motorola V557

  • The good: It get's out well, but it should in a big city. Looks ok. Has a camera for replacing the bg with a shot of my lady. The bad: drops the blue tooth link. I think this is an ambiant microwave issue most of the time, but rebooting the phone seems to help... Got a blue tooth adapter but it does not seem to work without the propriatary softwhere. Needs rebooted about every day to keep it stable. The unforgivable: Hard locks with stock software. overall I give it a 4/10.

  • I have had the V557 for about 12 days and it will freeze up when I push the off button to turn the phone off. The screen light will go off but the key light and caller ID screen stays on. If you push the off/on button to turn it on nothing happens so I have to take the battery off and put it back on to reset the phone before it will work again,at least 5 times in the 12 days. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't know if the battery is bad or if it is the phone itself.Everything else so far seems to work but I don't know for how long at this point. Also, the instruction manuel is terrible and the website is just as bad. Judy

  • Is the antenna external or internal? I can't tall from the pictures.

  • this phone has made me and my friends insane. The ticker works but could not get media net. I also had a problem with sending text messages. I prefer to stick with my sony.

  • This is the best phone I ever purchased. The battery life is great and it has many convienant features. Its also made very well!!

  • I am also returning the nokia 6102. I purchased the nokia because it was cheaper and seemed like a pretty sweet phone. Well it was cheap, literaly my first thought after i pulled it from the box was "what a POS" so I returned it a week ago a day later I recieved the motorola v557. I have looked this phone over and have made a few calls. Overall it performes really well, the speaker phone rocks, the screen is great, and the camera takes great pics for a phone and the video was really nice. (And remember a phone is a phone and if your looking for crystal clear pics buy a camera.) And being a college student I really like the rubber coating on the outside since i carry it in my pocket all the time, and drop it on occasion :), the rubber really keeps it looking good. So if your looking for a well built phone with some nice features and feel get the v557.

  • I got this phone for free today. Should arrive in 3 business days... It will beat the Nokia 6102 I'm returning since the v550 has bluetooth, internal antennae, better ear piece/sound volume, better looks, better ring tones (especially the hello Moto one, my all-time fav), camera 4x zoom and something called Push to Talk which i hope is the "tah dah" thing from nextel...the only thing that sucks is i got no data cable but hey, more money for my friend, Moto.

  • I sell cell phones. I have for about 9 months now. I have had very few V557's come back. the ones that did people decided they wanted a different phone but not because it was defective or anything.

  • Did anyone figure out the text messgeing problem. I recently bought it and love the phone, except I have the same text messaging bug that someone else had. I can't send any, even though it says I sent it, but it will send if it is in a reply. Anyone know how to fix this bug, called Cingular and didn't really fix anything. Other than that great features and the design is great also.

  • is this phone really that bad!!!

  • This is a GREAT phone! I don't have any problems with the charge, and the ticker feature is awesome. I like the size of the buttons, and that it has bluetooth.

  • Hi, i have a problem with the address book entries. I had the phone for about 2 days and I put some entries in. The next day i found a few numbers i had entered missing. I know they were IN because i called everyone i entered, telling them i got a new phone. Does anyone else's 557 delete or "lose" an address book entry? i called motorola and they had no clue..

  • With cingular carrier usa.Bad experience with this phone second time return for the same problem inside speaker dead after 5 month...clap.clap.clap back to nokia!

  • The phone itself is great .. great incoming and outcoming calls.. i have only found about 2 glitches n my phone... one as in the text messaging.. when some1 text messages me i can reply to them... but it wont allow me to send text messages to other people( with out replying) ..it seys i sent it to them but .. it never sends it...ive proven this with 2 phones right next to eachother.. one other thing the screen may go white n the middle of playing a game or freeze or something.. ( only during java games tho)

  • I also forgot to mention, this Phone has no INFRA RED trannsfer and you have to spend 45 dollars on a Blue Tooth cable. It can not Vibe and ring at the same time vibes first rings after....Horrible phone

  • This phone is horrible 1)Battery Life is bad 2)Display can not be visible at all on bright day. 3)Drops Carriers consistently. 4)Menu Browsing is Garbage. This phione was the worst phone I have ever owned, I do not recommend this to anyone, I think the V651 is a improved model of this phone with the bugs cleaned up, again tho even on the 651, the display and weak battery life are there as well.

  • The phone is sturdy, has an intuitive menu and good call/sound quality. The keys are large and easy to use.

  • This telephone is excellent for the price.

  • the v557 works well for me so im sorry about that

  • i would not recoment this phone i think its crap and i have had many problems with it an have taken it back to the shop many times too

  • I really would not reccomend this phone to anyone.Let me start off saying It was a regular Monday when I got the phone..I charged it like it said. Finally i thought time to have some fun!I went to school the next day took pictures of all my friends got numbers the usuall. After bought some ringtones.I turned it off for a minute because battery life was low. When I turned it on it said memory recaal delete.i quickly tried to stop it from deleting but it wouldnt.I was really bout to curse out a motorola empolye.I called motorola and they told me some steps which did not work.So they sent me the v400 which did the same thing. Now im on the v600 and it aint giving me no trouble. If i would rate this V557 it would be 1-2 a 2.

  • Coming Soon... 2 answer your question the phone is out.It dose have 1min recoeding but it is very blury but wat u exepcet it aint no video camera.Reppin Brooklyn!

  • this motorola phone is hot.The features is hot but i can see what everybody id=s saying about the text messages.Other then that this phone was fire but now im considrin a nextel 870 0r a mototrola v600 those my phones.other then that i would reccomend this phone to anybody.

  • Why does motorola v550 doese not appear in the motorola section or in enny other section, who can tell me somthing about motorola v550.10x

  • This phone is great you should get it its kinda pricy but a perfect phone

  • s/he might have judged by a different phone model. Or s/he might be a phone reviewer

  • this phone is not out in the market so how do you know this phone is just 1 min. video recording??? and how did you know that this phone is not clear??

  • this fone is alrite but the mp3 player is most less because you can only download 1 song

  • V557 is good when it comes to calling features... it's so clear when you are calling abroad. The design is good, the downside is that after a week of using V557, text input just hanged-up and i can't send text messages anymore, i can't even save a name or a phone number, the program was easily corrupted, and i can't use it anymore... The video is only a minute and is not clear.

  • That person is horrible. He lacks all performance especially looks!! never go out with that person!
