The samsung f490 is the best phone with great features... But the problem is that it's not available in Namibia and i therefore could not get repaired when the screen sensetivity stoped working and it's now laying at home, out of use perheps only if my uncle send me the parts from germany then i can get it repaired but i still think it's a great phone espcially features like the camera, phone memory and screen size

this phone is undoubtibly the worst phone i have ever had i got it in january well lets just say the battery wont even stay charged for more than two hours. im in high school and all i do is check the time and maybe reply to a couple of messages and the phone will only have one bar when i get out of school and i even get out of school early so its not like a full day of shcool its ridiculous

its a piece of junk coz you can only connect through GPS. you'll pay first the connection service on your sim subscription before you can do the "internet" thingy coz it has [NO] wifi device..

you can install the excel, word, pdf feature when you have a F490 software. you can get the software on its site [SAMSUNG] but the model is faced-out so good luck for searching the software.

just yesterday i bought this. u will get vga experience from its 5M cam. touch screen is trouble some not working as ease. u can't go pages sequentialy by touch. i didn't get data cable with it. vender gave only usb charger, thats not a data cable, its imprinted on the cable "charger only" this is funny. opera mini don't work properly.

@ponga u have to install samsung pc studio software in ur pc inorder to use this phn as a edge modem. In that software there is an option named internet modem u have to configure it for ur operator then connect ur phn via data cable and it ur work. It is better than any nokia phn as an modem. Bye.

I have bought this phone 10 days back in Bangladesh. It is a good phone. I'm using it as a EDGE modem. It has some good features like: 1.Touch screen 2.Good sound 3.Slim 4.I did load games from my pc by data cable after doing some tricks Some bad features: 1.No full screen video 2.Full screen Games r rare for its odd resolution of 240x432 3.Bad camera resolution maximum 2.5MP as my opinion. This mobile set has an excellent look. But it has two major lackings: 1. The camera/photo quality (Not picture quality) is very bad. I tried with almost all options with. 2. This sound features is with quality, but volume is too low. sometimes if you will not be able to hear it if your phone are in the bed room and you are not in there.

i know this set is very cheap in bangladesh but it has reasons it is a very slow set.i have used it for 5 months and ia am fad up of it.it hangs and software could be installed from pc and the camera resoltion is like 3 megapixl not 5 comparioing to others.its not durable and no purse could be found for this set and it starts to hang if u use it roughly.u will also have problems in the touch screen....... I got this phone about a month ago for US$ 157 and that's cheap for a touch screen phone. At least according to my local shops. I had a low budget so this was my best option. The camera is good but the color isn't as vibrant as it should be for 5mp. It's more like a good 3mp camera. The sound quality is awful. So don't bother listening to music on it. I have a good audio player so that didn't matter. It's got edge so you can use the net and 3g. And as you can see it's a touch screen phone so it's fun to use. The games that comes with it are all demos that are not fun and you can play for a few seconds. But it's a slim and good looking phone. Overall, I'd give this phone a 9 in design, a 9 in performance (whatever it can do) and a 6 in features. So if you're OK with that and you can get this phone for a really cheap price than get it but if your budget is higher I think you're better off with other phones but stick to touch screen ones. I mean this phone is my first touch screen phone and all I can say is I'm never going back to button pressing phones.

Forget about the 5mp cam + sound quality, trust me you will not be satisfy if u know what is quality +++ no radio +++ video & 3g cam is very bad +++ no software support : ( Other then this, the phone is perfect, u can have fun with the touch screen, the look is great : ) I m using this for 1 week but not satisfy fully, it has almost everything but not the quality that counts : )

It's hard to believe that a phone of this class doesn't come with a built-in flash player. What is worst is that when you try to look for the software to download it, nothing is out there that will work with this phone. So if you like to surf on the net and watch videos (other than you-tube, which is the only type of video you will see), I suggest looking for another phone.

Hi, I too tired installing .jar n .jad files on the phone but got the error as "Files Unsupported". Read somewhere that you will have no problem downloding the contents directly on your phone from your phone browser. However, traferring Files from Bluetooth or USB will not help. Try it from Wap n let me also know, coz i still have to try it from the phone browser.

it is really quite good phone for students those who are studying IT and business. reliable touch screen fast and easy access to internet. order at Vodafone 3working days to arrive. best for talk and messaging. email and internet are free upto 15MB just need to pay �2. after that i may vary.

this is a good phone & all that but it doesnt have qwerty bord. you cant landscape it when your typing. it has a good camera though but sound quality aint that good. thats beacause it not a walkman phone. it has a supperb quality in comes of browsing the internet. ;) just be contented guys. you can find features that you cant find in other phones. ;) its up 2 u really.

The F490 doesnt have a landscape keyboard, which sucks :( dont think it would have been hard for Samsung to make the keybord have the ability to become landscape querty..

Trully a dreadful phone. Touchscreen is nowhere near responsive enough, camera (although 5MP) is aweful, MP3 player not comparable to any Sony Ericsson and battery life is pathetic. Yes the phone has a stylus! although the screen is responsive to the users finger. The camera though is not that good, takes a while to snap, by which time the subject may of moved on! Web browsing is sometimes laboursome, but apart from that a nice phone

Internet Browsing is way slower than I was expecting - disappointing. Other than that, no problems at all, its great. If you want an F490 to browse the internet with, get an iPhone. If you want an F490 to take quality pics on to do all the otehr stuff that a phone is supposed to do, you wont be dissapointed!

i would just like to ask if this phone comes with a "answering machine" -like feature like the D820 has. I get to record my personal greeting, and everytime there is an unattended call, it automatically turns this feature on and I get to hear whoever it is who left me a message on my inbox.

I have only had this phone a day and already I love it. I found it very easy to adapt to it having had flip phones as my last two phones and the touchscreen isn't a problem for me now. It has Goggle Maps which is ecellent if you need to find somewhere and as far as I'm aware it is free. I am really happy with this phone and have no regrets in getting it.

this phone was probably designed earlier than LG, it probably came out earlier in Korea but just takes a while to launch in other countries. The LG viewty isn't that great it actually lags and the touch screen doesn't work that well

To put it easy, the Samsung Instinct is the CDMA version of the Samsung F490. The Instinct was redesigned a little bit. The Instinct also has slightly different dimensions, but the Instinct is far heavier than the F490.

I have demoed this phone for quite awhile now. Honestly this is not a very good touch screen phone. The screen is terrible in the sunlight, there is no virtual keyboard to text(a virtual num pad), too many OK dialogs throughout the UI. I'm not an apple fan but for the $$ the iphone is MUCH better.

I have had this phone for 2 days and I returned it for a SE W960i. The quality of the conversations was very poor, somehow surpressed of softened and I had to talk lowd to be understoud. The musicplayer is limited in possibilities and I didn't find a way just to skip to the next number. It looks nice if you keep it clean...

Just got back from a hands on demo of the F490 at my local Vodafone store. (Yes really, they got them in today.) As a power user, this phone, while lovely to look at and hold, vindicates two things: a) To date - only Apple have got the touch screen concept right with the iPhone. Each operation on the F490, in particular trying to type a text messages, is a pain. Try it! b) On the other hand, selecting almost any function on my SE K800i is only a few flicks of the joystick away. Why didn't Samsung put the improved touch screen GUI of the F480 (that's 480!) on the F700 so we can take advantage of it's fantastic QWERTY keyboard? Anyway, Vodafone UK provide excellent support (my K800i had broken down - they replaced it on the spot) and I was considering the F490 as part of my upgrade, but it's just too fiddly to achieve basic tasks. But don't get me wrong, if you just want it for social, it is very well made (better quality construction that Viewty), fast and looks 'da bomb'. :-)

i think the phone is a good idea just needed wifi so it can be a more capable multimedia phone as this is the market i think its aimed at. Looks great, but agree with other comments no WiFi, no GPS and just a doc viewer rather than pocket word etc applications are serious deficiencies. The gloomy colours are also unacceptable. Also lacks voice clarity feature which works very well on D900. Hardly a leap forward.

@ Fab I agree with you..us here in South Africa(Im in CT)alays get the sold out models here. Its all a marketing ploy, releasing on old overseas model here as a new release. Anyway, if you want something similar to this phone that is available locally, i suggest you have a look at the LG990 Viewty. It has exactly the same specs. Be warned though that operating a touch screen takes alot of getting used to, as well as the change in menu set-up. I was also looking at getting this phone, but like you, also could not find one. I suppose thats how companies loose customers..they go somewhere else to find what they look for. Good hunting.

I know the Finnish and the Swedish cellphone makers are not necessarily the best in terms of performance, but I have to stick to them because of they offer more user-friendly character input. Each key allows you to access the various characters you need. For example you have all the "a"s with the second key. (A,a, �, �, �, �...etc). This is likely to be my next purchase. Unfortunately, Asian brands (Japanese, Corean and the rest) don't make phones that have user friendly keypads when it comes to text-messaging. You have to go through through a couple of extra steps to access special characters. Most of them don't even bother to add vowels and consonnants with accents when the phone doesn't other languages than English, Chinese and Thai or Bahasi which is frustrating. One of the minimum requirement I need from a cellphone is the possibility to text message with most of the European languages. Its QVGA- recording which is 240*320 at 15fps, lol. d viewty is VGA(DVD Quality Recording, 30fps) which is 640*480, hmm. As well as 120 fps for matrix style slow motion. View d next technology folks.

Viewty replica... by the way: I live in Croatia, and the worst customer service provider and repair shop in hole country (not only for gsm phones but TVs and electronics as well) is Samsung. The director was arrested for smugaling trucks full of phones stolen from Hungaryan an romanian market. And when poeple bought tham here and went to repair shop the waranty was canceled with explanation that that phone is for eastern european market (not for croatian) and that waranty is not good. I WAS an SE fan, but since I've got Viewty I feel like reborn. THE BEST MULTIMEDIA GSM PHONE IN THE MARKET!!! N95 8GB is a master but offers (menu, icons, design) nothing new! I work in a company that sell mobiles and LG done excelent x5 job with KU990. (sorry for my bad english) - GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Positive comparison with LG Viewty: 1)It is a lot thinner and less weight (in my view very important if you want to wear it in inside ocket of jacket) 2)it has a bigger internal memory 3)bit bigger screen (closer to iPhone) 4)can store more names and adresses Negative however 1)no auto focus (heavy failure) 2)flash 3) video (frames per sec) not as outstanding as Viewty or Nokia N95 or N82 (the best) For business use however a proper proposal. Autofocus should however be on it, to make it the be outstanding.

Hi guys, I work in a mobile shop and for the past 2 1/2 years have been a strong campeigner of samsung phones. We have the least returns and faults with them by far. Much better phones, hoping this phone cane be a real break through, nice feature, clever design, nice looks and samsung simple user. Nokia of late and SE have had the worst returns, disgusting amounts as a matter of fact. Damn the N95, 6500 classic, E65 and W910i or making my life hell at work! Hope this helps some people out. You guys should consider the fact this is a phone not a digital camera. If you want a good camera buy a digital SLR. You don't need autofocus on a 5MP it's very good without. JUST A HELPFUL HINT FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING THIS PHONE. I DONT OWN ONE

i read somewhere that LG and Samsung share the same factory for phones? i might be wrong, but that would explain how their designs are so similar.

Samsung never copy LG buth of them has one disteny. it is good but it can be the best by having autofocus on 5MP camera and WLAN and also better in camera recording. I hope the best for samsung

nice specs and form factor ... but without wireless lan? Imagine the cost to use full web browser. The web loading would cost a bomb unless you have unlimited package with telco on gprs usage.

If the phone had this, if the phone had that...it would be perfect. Each company makes various phones and you pick the one that has the best features for you. Some people dont want a phone with a million features and the price tag that comes with it. This phone isnt meant to be a smartphone so it doesnt have windows mobile. The ratings for this phone are way too low for what the phone offers...and I'm not sure how people can rate its performance without using it. I do agree that samsung can be very annoying because they don't make a lot of quad band phones. Please remember that not every new phone should have every possible new feature

nokia 16m colour displays are capable of showing 16m but they dont they they only show 256k colours stop thinking 16m is better samsungs screen are much better than nokias brighter and they just plain look better

ps just looked at the specs, there is only one thing that this phone got. which is a fab idea and all phones should have it on. A 3.5mm headphone socket. come on most buy a phone (yes for a phone) but next a MP3 player. must be only nokia that managed to fit one. Come on S.E LG.

Very attractive, sleek, nice form factor, and beatufiul screen. Though it's not the most fully loaded phone, it does have some exceptional features. If it had an OS, WiFi, Autofocus, VGA 30fps video recording, DivX playback, a faster processor (even though the processor isn't mentioned in the specs), and a motion sensor, the phone would be perfect. And it does seem possible. Hopefully the successor with have some of those features.

No autofocus, video recording in the old QVGA 15fps, and all the touch keys models from samsung are such a pain to use...Even the e590 for 100$ has better specs that this one.

Really very nice phone,as a fan of both samsung and nokia I can give my opinion that seeing the specs there is still no competition for the N95, or is there??? Nevertheless I would like to have them both ;)
