I got my crap phone out to try Ben's fix and it had a totaly flat battery. I put in my new Virgin SIM card to charge it up and surprisingly the things appears to have fixed itself. Connected to the network and fired up, made a few calls and appears to be fine. Gave the phone away ten minutes later, someone else can deal with it now.

Thanks ben, why couldn't FN Shamsung tell us that? Will give it a go just to see if it works but I have had it with this phone.

I had a problem with my phone where it went into an infinite loop. Searching for the network then going through the shut down and restart screen. I went to fone zone who provided it who gave me this solution. Remove the sim card and switch the phone on, then enter the following reset code "*2767*2878#" This resets you phone solving the problem, be warned though this deletes all your user settings and all the games on the phone, probably all the non standard ring tones too. You do keep all your photos and messages though.

I have just been told that Telstra has turned off my I-mode. Thanks for that Testra, but as I have been unable to use the serice because this crap Shamsung phone chucked a dump and died on me over 6 monthsago this was a waste of there time and mine.

Thank goodness I only have a month to go before I can ditch it! Ringtones are rubbish, imode shut now so can't get more, text dictionary very small and won't add words, some button presses go unrecognised when texting, default to capitals when texting is a pain, when character limit is reached for text message it tells you you are starting the second message ?? and then goes back to the start of the message if you are half way through a word when it tells you, types the rest of the word at the beginning, can't extend the ring time before going to message bank, photo quality poor (can't download them). Absolute rubbish. Changed from Nokia to get this, never again!

George, the phone is rubbish, if you look back on the post you will see that this is the same thing that happened to me. If you ring Shamsung they will tell you it needs a software upgrade, $50 thanks. My advice, toss it in the bin and never have anything to do with Shamsung again.

Hi Folks, My wife inherited one of these S342i's a few months ago from her best friend to replace her "housebrick" Ericsson A1018s, (still works), and guess what, it's suddenly developed a weird fault..After switching on,it cannot find a connection signal! It just keeps toggling between the SAMSUNG SGH-S342i opening screen and "Please wait.....searching"..On and on until the battery runs out. Telstra in Adelaide say "we can't help but we can upgrade you if you like!" Great. Time to chuck it away? Any clues, anayone?

it mite not be the phone at all, contact ur provider, eg: if u were wit telstra u may have to ring them an they may have to activate wap & mms codes on your account then send u settings so u can save them to ur phone!

If you have had the phone for over twelve months the problem will solve itself when you can't get into your phone anymore. Then all your pics will be gone, as I found out. My solution would be to get a good phone.

Thanks Patrick, but I wouldn't bother :-( Found a new battery ($70 !!!), only to find out that ISN'T the problem as the phone still would not turn on. Lucky they took the new battery back. Quote on fixing it...well...cost $40 just for them (telstra shop) to have a look at it, refundable if I go ahead with repairs, they keep the money if I don't. However, my point is what if the repairs r going to cost more than the phone is worth? Hence, I've given up. It will stay dead & I'll use an old one til my contract runs out. So yeah, one year & two weeks old & a phone that has never been ill treated just dies. CRAP...steer clear folks.

Sent an email to Samsung about my software issue about two weeks ago, shock me, no reply. Crap phone, crap customer service = crap company/product. The way things are going I will send my battery to you. It's no use to me if the phone will not connect to the network.

I've had this phone for just over a year now, and have had NO complaints, except for the text being very small, which I can deal with. However! 2 weeks out of warranty and the battery cell died...and I'm having no luck in being able to get a new battery..just seem to get the runaround from retailers. Still 11 months to go on the contract, but no phone cos of a battery? Sucks :-( If anyone knows where I can buy one, preferably online, please email me :-)

This phone is crap. Apart from all the other comments that I agree with I have just phoned Samsung who tell me that I probably need a software upgrade after a little over a year. I don't see how their crap software is my problem, but I apparently have to pay fifty bucks for the honour of allowing them to fix their stuff ups. Samsung can derelict their own, buy a Motorola.

Looks nice but its interface can be very confusing even to do simple things like the sms the formating is way to complex 2 hard for the average joe to work out. also if you want any ringtones or games you will need to use imode which you need a telstra sim card for. almost no Accessories they are really hard to find and only basic stuff like car chargers and headsets no covers and any phone bling :(

I've found this phone to be a complete waste of money, I startedo on a plan in jan 2005 with another samsung phone which didnt work so i upgraded to this one with little benefits. It turns off on receiving phone calls, does not actually receive calls rather says missed call each time, when you go to write a message it turns off and it has also been unable to reconnect to the network after turning off on several occasions. I have sent it away to be serviced 4 times with no luck. Buyers beware!

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with something? The sms always reverts to full capitals mode. I was wondering if there was any way to get it to be set to the Abc type mode? I know how to change it whilst in a sms, but I was wondering if there was a way to get it to come up Abc as the preset, not ABC?

howdy all i got this phone 6 months ago i was nearly the first in NSW with the phone(apparently) and i found it not as good as the seller told me it was.. not only did i have 2 go out and buy a ipod because it had no mp3 or radio but the text is small and the inferd still WONT WORK. im stuck with this phone 4 another 22 months.. im really not happy with the plan either.. telstra changed my plan half way though the deal and now im left with a huge bill!! if anyone knows if this phone can be connected 2 optus prepayed it would be appreciated 4 the email i may love you 4 life lol. the photo quality of this phone is great! just not enough memory to hold the photos, and i mode has been over advertised and isnt that fantastic i used it once and then stoped using it..there was no point in it.. anyway if someone could e mail me back on the optus sim card it would be highly appreciated thanks heaps.

I really don't like this phone. The highest ring volume is really low. The text font is too small. There are some good features but they are far outweighed by the bad features. I can't for the life of me work out how to send an MMS. I've given up and changed phones.

I love this phone in almost all ways - its gorgeous to hold and look at, but the one gripe I have is the whole silent/discreet settings. I don't really want it to vibrate when I have it on silent, and if I want a more discreet ring - there is no "just beep", it has to be a ringtone and I have to manually turn down the volume. I do wish it had a radio - but thats not a problem, just more of a personal preference.

I was gobsmacked that this phone does not support a normal "ring ring" ring tone!!! I really HATE novelty and musical rings and didn't even think to ask when I was talked into this (otherwise very good) phone by the Telstra Shop salesgirl. Went back to ask if they could exchange or advise on getting a normal ringtone and was more or less brushed off - didn't seem interested in helping once the sale had been made. A pity really, can anyone advise on where i can download a normal ringtone? The search is driving me mad!

Telstra has the Samsung E310 on special for only $229 outright. It takes any SIM card - I use Optus SIM and it works very well. Suggest you buy the E310 instead of this since cheaper and the features are better.

Excellent phone and beautiful to look at. Seems very high quality and screen is very clear. Very stylish and looking forward to using imode feature. Only gripe is the phone should be more customizable (e.g) SMS settings and general phone settings are limited. Can anyone tell me how do I set T9 as my standard text method?? If I cant do this I am considering taking the phone back

I'm not happy with the VERY small text when you receive an sms & having to go into settings to change to bigger fonts every time you want to send one is frustrating. I'm hoping Samsung will fix this problem. Otherwise it's a great little phone.

I needed a new mobile and my needs in a mobile are very basic - I am not interested in MP3 players etc. I did a lot of looking around and narrowed my phone choice to this or the Nokia 6101. The Nokia looked and felt cheap and nasty, plus the external aerial was tacky. This phone has the best graphics I have seen on a mobile in this price range. I love this phone, I have downloaded heaps of ringtones and wallpapers from imode, the fact that it is not compatible with most ringtones companies is not a problem for me.

My mobile sim fried which caused all of the photos and other stuff saved on my sim to be thrown out with it. It's a great phone but I wish I was able to download ringtones and games through other companies other than i-mode. Most of the time, it is not compatible with any of the ringtones etc.

Can anyone tell me if its possible to have vibrate on as well as message tone? Both tone and vibrate work fine for ring tone but its seems message is tone only, no vibrate.

Samsung do not support this phone with ringtones, games or any other downloads! This model number does not appear on its website or many other popular ringtone sites yet they allow you to register.

My daughter has this mobile, she's absolutely delighted with it. I have to pick just ONE problem with it,for text messaging the print is unusally fine, even for the sharpest eyes. And yes ! in " Options " you can choose your text to be " Bold, Italic, Underlined " and that's great, if only you could keep it that way, problem is, it reverts back to the original settings.

AUSSIES - I got mine from fonezone on a $40 plan... $0 upfront. You get $35 worth of calls and messages and $5 of data.. BTW - what is data?? :P No bluetooth but does have imode... No radio... and no mp3..

I just brought this phone about a week ago and I love it. It's so easy to use. I have never used a samsung phone before and I am finding it easy to learn how to use. I have no real need for Bluetooth so this phone works well for me. I do wish samsung had a ring and vibrate setting though.

its better, cheaper and faster than gprs/wap. For example, if you have 2 i-mode handsets you can send an email and it will be cheaper than sending a sms. 2.2c against 25c for sms
