Satish, S500i plays only AAC format as far as ringtones are concerned. More so, the size of the ringtone should not exceed 150Kbs. You can convert mp3 to .aac using a software converter.

I have this phone for almost 3 years. I see in the talktime it says 3 hours, guess what I get nothing less than 11 hrs of talktime on this phone. I am surprised that i see 3 hrs as the actual talktime given, it almost 3 times the amoutn am getting!! Strange!! How do i configure i-mode setting in India. Its got edge too..Anybody help me??

You can't set mP3s as ringtones they have to be aac files. Just convert em using Itunes, and they can't be full song files you have to cut them using software.

i have had this phone for about 16 months and its served me well. only problem is you cant set mp3's as ringtones. also doesnt have a very good battery life but it depends how often you make phone calls apart from that a decent phone

dharmender:- i can only answer 1 of your question whih is the 1 about the bluetooth and what i have to day is that you cannot remove this, but all you have to do is simply enter the same code as he does. day for instance u enter 1234 then he has 2 so do the same.\most people do this or 0000. hope i was some help xx

I've had this phone for nearly a year now, its very smart looking and easy to use. I've always had a Nokia but decided to give Samsung a try and I am impressed. The photo quality is brilliant and theres lots of space to store them. My only complaint would be that the battery runs flat very quickly, have to charge it every other day which is a pain.

I v had 2 of the s500 and have found that the battery life last much longer if you charge it the first time for over 8 hours. This was the case with the second phone and i would get at least 10 or more e- mails a day This lasts about 2 days Its very compact and neet with large digets. Layout is very simple and easy to use ity gets 10/10 from me

Hi all, i must say, out of all the phone i have ever had, i LOVE this phone, so much, i accidently dropped my first one in the bath, and then bought the same phone again WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am thinking of getting a contract phone, and i have seen the E900 on orange, that seems a good deal, but i dont think i can do it, i may have to put the contract sim in this phone. IT IS JUST TO COOL!!!!! I have read a few opinions regarding the APN, i had the same problem. What you need to do is go to Setting, into Imode Settings and "select Profile" to Pay & go (or what ever your phone is) after this it will work fine (well..... mine did) I have had this phone a fair while, so any problems anyone email me, and ill try to help. I have had this phone for nearly a year now. Despite some minor problems, I think its an excelent phone. Short battery life, and rather mediocre camera are the only major problems with it. Other than that, it has an amazing array of features and looks good aswell.

love this phone. Onnly complaint is that u cant set personalised message tones. BUT A TIPP!...to set ur mp3 as a ringtone...convert it 2 AAC. U can do that on i tunes then send it 2 ur fone. that will work!

very satisfied with my samsung s500i. lots of nice features. but underused coz i bought this in the uk and now am back to asia and i still have no idea how to use the imode & imail. i have to inquire from my service provider if they have this service. but overall, it is a nice phone, chic, stylish, and it's like no other, at least where i am coz it is not sold in the local market!!!

Just to answer the question- how to silence your fone. Press and hold the # key then do the same to put the sound back on. Hope this helps.

Hi All. I have just bought the Samsung S500i. Since I have purchased the handset, I have not been able to receive or send mms. I am definitely provisioned correctly on the network. Now I must admit, I am a little remedial when it comes to new technology!, and have always used Nokia's in the past, so if anyone can take the time to help me with very basic instructions on how to send, receive and view mms on my phone, I really would very much appreciate it. Hi Has anyone else had a problem with the s500i restarting itself? I'm now returning my second phone to O2 because of this and they assure me that it's not been a problem with other phones, which seems suspicious to me!! THIS IS FREE. you are using iTunes to convert a song ALREADY ON YOUR PC, not buying a new one on iTunes. iTunes only charge for buying tracks from them. you are only using it for converting tracks you already have. okay?! 2. in iTunes, click 'file' and then select 'add file to library'. find the file on your computer that you want as a ringtune, and click open. it should automatically convert it to AAC, but if it doesn't, then right click and select 'convert to AAC'. you have just added a mp3 already on your computer to the iTunes library. some songs are protected and cannot be converted. if this is the case - pick another song!! 3. once you've done that, using the software that came with the phone, send the song to your phone in the 'MUSIC' folder. i'm not even going to try explaining this part. figure it out. :P 4. now, on your phone, go to 'file manager'. notice this part. 'file manager' NOT NOT NOT 'settings'. go into 'music'. your song should be there. click 'options', and then scroll down to 'set as' and click. select item 2 'ringtone'. congratulations, it will now play as your ringtone. note - if you try to select your song through 'settings' then it will tell you the file is too large. if you select it through file manager, it automatically only plays the first 20 seconds or so. so pick a song with a good beginning. i hope this answers a few questions.

This phone has been completely ruined by O2!! The ridiculous software/firmware they have installed does not allow you to assign mp3 ringtones/video ringtones to caller groups (I previously owned a D500 and you had the freedom to do assign seperate mp3 ringtones to caller groups), you can only have one mp3 ringtone as the main ringtone, which leaves you with inferio polyphonic ringtones to assign to your groups. Rubbish! I thought that the S500i would be more advanced, having secure internet access, and although O2's i-mode features are very good, the restrictions caused by their firmware has completely neutered the real ability of this phone - their firmware also means that I cannot get on to certain WAP-only sites as these sites do not recognise the fact that I am browsing using a mobile. I still love samsung phones, they are class leaders, I am just against companies eradicating the potential of great mobile phones. I will never get another phone that has firmware on it again. I will, without a doubt, get another samsung mobile.

Can anybody tell me if they have the same problem when the phone is switched off and switched back on again that the phone loses certain things like the cover picture on the phone has to be reset again and that the MP3 player shows there are no files and you have to reset the playlist all-over again and the alarm tone? as said before at the time i bought the 512mb it was about �20 the 1gb was priced at around �50 but they are coming down in price you just have to shop around for the best deal free delivery ect.

heh, well i like it personally. i have an mp3 as a ringtone, message tones are fine, and my battery lasts 3 days with normal usage, since i turned down the screen brightness a few notches (you cant really notice). i've had no problems with it at all, nice phone.

i have mp3s on discs so do not have to pay to download them only way i found how to do it is with nero wave editor had to change it to a mp4 and do it through the video and it works but have to be under 300 or so many seconds to fit the file on your phone your phone will not allow it if you want to pay i tunes for 20 secs of music they have a way of doing it think they are in with samsung to make money out of us

Hello people, I really need your help on this one � its been bugging me for a while now! I was playing on my phone the other day and I opened up the music player (I have the �up� arrow set as a shortcut for this). I didn�t mean to open it and so carried on pressing other buttons before it started playing the track. Somehow I managed to minimise the player and was able to carry on typing a message as normal with the track playing in the background. I�ve tried a million and one combinations since to minimise the player, but every time I try, it just closes it completely. Does anyone how to minimise the player, so you can use your phone for other things whilst still listening to music? Many thanks in advance!!!

well i have had the phone for a while and have loads of mp3s on discs. on my old phone just had to send to my phone motorola raz with this one have to change to mp4 in nero wave editor for it to work as a ringtone and has to be 300 or under in to the video for it to work as a an mp4 and set as a ringtone

Im afraid that what you say about they are all like this and that the mms inbox is only there to receive the pictures and not view them is not right. I have found out that it depends on what phone has sent you the pic and O2 know about this and they have even said that it should not do this and its something that Samsung have done wrong with the software on this phone. Give me the old mms system any day at least you dont have to mess about saving pictures that you prob dont want to keep once you have seen them. Samsung you have let yourself down this time.

Ade, Yeah this is what happenes with them all. It shouldn't really matter though cos as you said when you save it into the picture folder it is fine, the I-mode Inbox is only there to receive the mms not to view them.

Hi We have had this phone for 2 weeks now but we have a big problem with the picture messaging on it. If someone sends a mss to it and even if they have their camera set to the smallest resolution when you view it in your inbox the image comes out so large you only see the far left of the pic. The only way you can view the whole pic is to save it to your phones folder and then go and view it. It does not matter what phone we have tried to send a pic with it does it every time. We have been on to the boffins at O2 and they have finally admited that there is a problem with this phone that Samsung know about but are prob not going to do a fix for it. Has anyone come across the same prob and if so did you get it sorted. Cheers Ade

iv seen on the internet u can get a adaptor thing for the headphones so it changes the phone connector to a normal connector so u can plug in normal headphones. Does any1 kno where you can get the in the uk???

Hi Charlotte, if you uninstall the samsung 3.0 software and remove the driver in control panel/device manager. reboot your computer (make sure your phone is not connected to the usb) then install ALL the software BEFORE you plug the phone in and then it should work, it did for me

Finally worked out the phone, mp3 and everything. Once you know what your doing the phone is very good. I couldn't receive picture messages at first but then after a few weeks they worked. Regarding the Mp3 ringtones etc. I changed them to AAC format with iTunes and downloaded them to my phone and they worked fine as ringtunes, only problem I have is I cant get the USB connection and CD to work properly, it wont find the phone so brough a bluetooth USB thing and that works fine. I also thought it only had 1 ringtone but it doesnt you have to press the middle button when over the set ringtune and it will bring up all the rest. Hope that helps. Charlotte

had this phone about 3 weeks and found out you can have mp3 ring tones on it using nero wave editor to change to mp4 in video and use as ring tone but must be under 300 kb hope this helps yours leo

Hi everyone, i have left a free s500i video ringtone on my website, A call logo will appear on the front screen and you will hear a old phone ringer. Download it and bluetooth /usb it to your phone, go to videos/downloaded videos, press options, then 'set as' then caller ID, then select who you want it to ring for. this video is to help people who cant sort out their ringtones, if you have 1 that works you will be able to see what works and make your own. if you go to this page on imode be warned the ringtone is 152k, at 1c per 1k (my phone provider rate) that will cost you e1.52 , so if u have bt/usb, use it. have fun

Fabulous phone, but a blip on the landscape is that contrary to all helpful hints re renaming mp3 to aac etc, no matter what format you save it to on your phone (and I'm sure everyone has read the manual) the file format is still unsupported by the phone, so its not just a select few, no sound format whatsoever can be used as a ringtone. Those that have must be the only ones with a complete phone as I'm told by the techie guys at samsung that setting your ringtones is actually not possible in this phone :( But still a great phone, and cool 'smart' predictive texting. On ya Samsung!!

Ive had the Samsung E700 for a couple of years now and it has finally packed up so brought the S500i as I still like my old fone...but when I got it there is No ringtunes on it or anything just 1 main 1 and 1 mian message tone...Is that right? Yes it is sad iLWZ, this phone has so much more than just m4a (acc). i love the fact you can read your .pdf book on the train, or store a word .doc you need for work, then just BT it to computer (those type of files & excel, ect go into 'other files', press 5 to rotate screen). Its a real pity they have locked the java part (the only way at the moment is to download *.jar with a *.jam in front of it) everyone should email samsung & tell them you want the java unlock code, we should not have to pay for free games. also m.gmail.com is a great way to view your email through imode. This is not just a fancy video ringtone phone.

if you want to put your mp3 to ypur ring : you have to put mp3 format in agp: so before you open your mp3 by the audio editor you select the 20-30 secondes of song( not more) and you save as ...(in format wave or mp3) , after that you change the format in agp with super (logiciel):

Only had the S500i for a short while but I am already quite impressed. Looks and feels just right. Was a bit worried about comments I had read about not being able to use music downloads etc as ringtones but have managed to crack that one quite easily. I find using a bluetooth dongle attached to your computer by far the easiest way to download music, pictures and even video clips. As for battery life if you turn down the contrast a few clicks and don't require the memory card in place this can increase battery time quite considerably. With normal everyday useage I can go 3 days without having to recharge. Finally having previously had numerous Nokias and Samsungs I would say without doubt this is by far the best by a long way and anyone considering buying should go for it.

Hi, I have this phone and had the same problem. The solution is easy, make sure all you MP3's are on you PC in you music file, download from the internet, itunes, the program once installed and running will automatically import all your music, you can then go down the list and choose which song you want, right click and choose convert selection to AAC, the program will then make a copy of the MP3 in M4a format, you can then transfer the tune to you phone's music folder and use it as a ringtone. It's really easy honest. Hope this is of some help.

@jo You say you can get 3/4 days out of the battery by setting brightness to lower levels but do you turn it off at night or leave it on all the time? I got given this nifty lil phone for my 22nd but had probs with connecting it via the given software and usb cable to my laptop and had to resort to using a dongle to bluetooth aac files to use as my ringtone...yes people...mp3s don't work but convert them to aac format using itunes and you can do it...Enjoy!

hi for everyone who cant get mp3's as ring tones all you have to do is covert mp3 to aac using itunes, then copy the mp3 once converted and paste it into a folder on your hard drive, then send it to your phone via bluetooth its really easy once you know how to do it.

I think the phone is great the photos from the camera are the best quality I have ever had from a mobile phone. Just 2 things are annoying 1.the headphones are the worst, keep popping back out of the ears as they are to heavy! 2. you can only use the tones provided on the phone for message tones and they all sound really bad!!

People moaning about the battery life: Have you tried turning the display brightness down? I have mine on the lowest setting and its bright enough - battery lasts a good 3-4 days which is more than enough. Also, those of you who cant get PC to detect it. I'm guessing u didnt follow instruction properly cause I did and it works fine - install disk before pluggin in! As for setting mp3 as ringtone, read previous posts u lazy bastards!

hi i have had my samsung S500i for about a month now, very pleased with it one problem though, on my old phone (motorola v525) i used to be able to send .jar games to my phone and they would all work, this phone is ment to be compatable with .jar files but when it has been sent from my pc to bluetooth it says 'file type not recognised' WHY? it says that it will take .jar files :S please can you email me if you have any ideas on what i an do, thanks a lot greatly appretiated

it's the D600 which works correctly with a 512K card... for exemple a movie about 90 minutes and 220 Ko. mine, S500i not.

with extended memory (512K), it begins very, very slow ... when you navigate on your card. If files are big, it is NOT possible to used : 30 secondes?1 minute ? to jump to the next file ... the same memory card on another samsung (i don't remerber the number of samsung og my colleague) DOES work correctly ... and he can see movie of 90 minutes and more !!!! (3gp format, course). but for moment, on my S500i, it doesn't work ... be continued ...

good and easy to use ... but life battery is very very very BAD! 1 to 2 days maximum when my old S341i did 4 to 6 days for the same using. If u use video, so your screen, just few minutes 10 to 15, your battery will be KO, and it begins hot !

i definatly agree, i think this phone is wicked, its a top range phone, for sure, i can use 3pg converter, to change mp3 to 3pg, 3pg is basicly like a video format, in order to download a vidoe on your PC, to your phone, its best to have a 3pg converter, you can convert teh video file, and choose the quality, etc, and send it to your phone. this phone i reckon is to technicle for some people. the phone is too powerful i rekon though, needs a bigger battery, but yea clamshell phones have short battery life anyway, over all i give it 9/10

This is the best fone i've had, equaling than mobiles like the imate sp4 and nokia 6630 in media functions and better in terms of screen quality and camera. All you who have had problems setting mp3s as ringtones, simply convert them to AAC(.m4a)using iTunes put them on the phone, go into file manager, then music, select the file you want, then click set as "Ringtone" this way, they can be any size, even over 300k. The camera is excellent, 1.3mp shows up even like 2mp. The flash is also very good, it only operates on one side of the camera although it appears to be one the other side, but you dont really need to because it is so powerful. The video is double regular mobile phones at 352x288 instead of 176x144 meaning no pixelation. The best video recording on the market. The mp3 player is very, very good, you can even activate when closed by simply holding the play button. with an amazing 3D stereo sound option that makes you feel like you are at a live concert. Also this phone has dual speakers. You can activate the camera using the camera button with full zoom functions, video recording,and brightness settings, and even the flash when closed, it all showing up on the 65000k external screen. The phone has a better, bigger and brighter screen than the SGH-E770, 262k, 320x240 pixels instead of the E770's 176x220 making it one of Samsungs top clamshell mobiles, top of the range in the UK.

Hi everyone, I have a couple of questions and I'm hoping you can help me! 1) Is it possible to fast forward MP3s as they are played back using he media player. Ive tried holding down the ffwd/rwd buttons but it just skips the tracks. 2) Can you set other ringtones as a message tone ratherr nthen the preset ones? It seems you can only have personlised ringtones but not msg tones. 3) When using i-mode, if you close the phone, the front screen displays the orange 'i' symbol. Is it possible to change this wallpaper to something different? 4)Finally, does anyone know where I can get themes from for tis phone. yea to be honest i do think the phone is too powerful, i think gordon is right like its a sports car, its got the looks the functions, but drains fule to quiclkly, BUT, to be honest i dont mind, i wouldnt blame it because theres so much you can do with it. i still think its a top range phone and recomend people to still buy it. compare this to D600, obviously no doubt D600 is the winner, but it doesnt have i mode and so on, so there are negatives, overall i think its a excellent phone and value for money!!

recently got this phone, battery life is a let down i have to recharge every two to three days which isnt very good. Also the ringing volume although it marks top at 5 as most other samsung it doesnt sound so loud, ive missed a lot of calls due to this. Apart from that it is a pretty ok phone but i would definately still recomend the D500 as a better phone.

Hi Martin, just go to the option above the bell, the pic icon. if the number is on your sim 'To add this detail, copy to phone. continue?' say yes, then go down the list click on the same icon (the light blue pic 1) press 0 (or scroll up 2 times) and you're on the music icon. then add the music. P.S. anyone found the java app unlock code yet ? p.p.s. did everyone know that you can view pdf's, word docs, excel ect, they go into 'other files' click on them and they open in picsel file viewer, to turn the screen press 5, next page press 6 ect. press options 2 for zoom. lots of free books out there in pdf format, a good read on the train. please someone find the java code

re diff ringtone for contacts. select contacts choose your contact. in here should be a bell icon, select this and you choose your tone from there. you also can select photos of your contacts to appear when they ring from here.

I have had the s500i for a few weeks now and I love it but I have 2 problems, firstly when I put a micro sd card in the phone my battery drains within a few hours, without the card it lasts for about 5 days. Does anyone know why this is?? Also I can't download any java applications to my phone as I get an error message each time saying either the file is unsupported or too large. I had the E720 before this phone and never encountered any problems in this area. Does anyone know how to change the settings so I can download java applications?

Hello everybody, I have converted mp3 to m4a and it works as a ringtone, BUT I can`t set it as ringtone for every each contact diferently. Only for all of them as one ringtone. Is there posibility to set a diferent m4a file for a diferent contact? Another thing: how long your battery can stay alive? Mine is dead in 24 hours!!!! re mp3s as ringtones. i was having the same problem. download itunes and convert the files there. then import it to your phone and it works!! its gets saved as a m4a file type.

If you are fed up with the same boring ringtones you can use .3gp and have a video play on your front screen (its deadly, i have edited a picture of a friend and have him jumping around the screen to the benny hill theme) if you have a 3gp converter set it to audio - acc 16000. video - 3gpp, qcif, have fun. p.s. does anyone know how to upload java games properly ?

hi all. For people having problems connecting to pc via USB. Make sure you install cd first before plugging the USB into pc. Once software is installed, you can connect the phone to pc. Simple. if people are still having problems, you are on your own. People still trying to set mp3 as ringtones, READ PREVIOUS THREADS BELOW.

Any 1 wanting to get there mp3's as ringtones they have to be in AAC. You can do this by using itunes and its very easy. Enail me and i will tell you how. :)

bahamut - find a converter like IMTOO. Convert the files to m4a or aac. go into the music folder, open the file, choose options, and set as ringtone. If you can convert MP3 to m4a files (http://www.m4a.com/) these will not give you any issues...I have a few that are 3900kb and work perfectly as ringtones.

I recently got the brilliant s500i, and I followed instructions posted previously in regards to using mp3 as ringtones, I managed to change the settings to mono, bit rate 96, but the samsung pc studio program wont let me reduce to 8000 hz, from the original 44100 hz. The lowest I can go is 22000 hz, and that's too big. Would anyone know how to work around this ? I also tried other file types, no luck. In advance, thanks to anyone would can come up with an idea...

a few items: 1. no way to minimize the mp3 player. you should have bought a nokia. haha 2. Opera mini is out but I can't seem to figure out how to download via the browser (S500i wont display the download page) and can't bluetooth the install files directly to the java apps folder. Anyone know if this is due to the java version of the phone or if it might be another issue? 3. I am using this with cingular in the US ( the phone was purchased unlocked via ebay) and I can't get my MMS to work despite using the info on cingular site for a variety of samsung phones...how is it that my wap (or edge) browswer works but not my MMS...dont they utilize similar pathways? thanks

how come on the battery for this phone it has www.samsungmobile.com but on the website this phone is nowhere to be found? and mp3 ringtones cannot be done. you have to convert to AAC on your comp (itunes) and put into the music folder of the phone and go into the file manager > music and select set-as ringtone otherwise it says file too large.

Just got s500i today, great phone, camera good,video excellent, all features you could need and i-mode is ace. To use usb cable with phone i installed all stuff from disc then when it says detected new hardware device make sure disc is in drive and say no to searching web and click ok or next or whatever it is. keep doing this and eventually when you load up samsung editor thing its connected. You can put mp3s on using this.

Hey all, My partner has got this phone and bought a 512mb memory stick and uploaded around 100 songs on to it. Anyone know how to get the phone to shuffle through all these songs without sticking them in to an album? The albums can only hold around 50 songs or so and you can't shuffle between albums :-( Cheers in advance for any help! Steve

hey chez, how ya doin? sorry i took so long replying have bin a bit bzy:) nokia and s/e are worlds appart in terms of menus etc. the w800i is slim line does have good cam but has an orange streak that may annoy u after a while! i think it has 512 mb mem with the expandable mem available. it is v sim to k750i but with the walkman feature. i do like s/e fones, now n70 i know theyhave a good spec (roll eyes) but ye they are a bit brickish. my over all advice is there are plenty of h/s available that have all the gadgety things ur lookin for but witc r also sexy too, the n seies are to be launched fully so keep an eye out for the forthcoming nokias and if we'r lucky they will be compact...tho somehow i doubt it. for feature packed h/s and slim line look s/e is the way to go! they r sexy hot fones and that coming from a samsung fan ;)my advice wait for the nxt gen wlkman fone from s/e bound to b all round winner.

Hi people i own this phone and about the battery life. it lasts 12 hours leaving it on and using it all day. i used it on the phone for 4 hours and still had battery left so the talk time is longer than stated. it takes transflash card which is the same as micro sd i think and i have a 512mb so 1gb should work.

I bought this phone online and I love its look. The only problem is the cracking and unclear reception when using the bluetooth headset. hey chez seriously im glad you got the phone you wanted and of course one man's meat is another man's poison. im sure you will love your d600. gen samsung are brilliant handsets they are esthetically pleasing as well as delivering on the tech bit. at the mo the the phones every ones is jamming the lines for are the new motorola's L7, u6, v3i and v3x but again im prohibited from going "noooo!" down the phone as 3 of these handsets are very limited in their spec. e1 is cool because of the whole itunes bit. i always give my customers this standard advice no matter how much you want a ceratin handset if its chargeable to get through new contract or upgrade, dont pay for it, fads come and go so why pay for the pleasure. you will always have free upgrades available wich are just as good so go for those. even tho these handsets are deemed to be "old" in mobile terms the nk 6230i and se k700i are fantastic as they carry most of the latest specs but are not a tarted up piece of kit so you get a better deal. n e ways sorry to lecture, but remember ther's nothing worse than the latest bling handset that's jst gone out of fashion or been superceded, stick to something beyond this type of marketing as you will always have something no one else has which has got to be a good thing!!!

hey chez, I work for o2 did you by any chance get this as an upgrade? we r not allowed to give our own personal opinions on handsets, but because im on here i can say what i like!! basically i chose to get the s500i over the d600 as i thought the d600 really wasnt all that. its quite bulky and rather unstylish also what you'll miss now that you've given the s500i up is the sleek stylish look. im a massive samsung fan but i would say to you that the battery prob you experienced is a samsung thing not jst with the s500i. good luck with the d600 personally i think the s500i kicks its ass! ha ha ;) ps the whole 1.3 mp v the 2mp is a bit of a red herring as unless you r to download images onto pc and blow them up the diff is after all only 0.7 on a small screen and when you send mms its rescales it anyways soz its jst so annoying when ppl call through screaming for latest "must have" phones phones that you know r all jst hype but are not allowed to say so :(. hope you enjoy it. o2 are ace!!!:))))

i got this phone last tuesday and I am happy. the battery on my phone lasts a week before requiring a recharge. I recharged it on saturday as there was only one bar left and the battery is still full. I transfered at least 20 pics from my k700i to the s500i using bluetooth and infra-red and the battery was still full. I didn't notice any dorp in battery life when playing with it when I first got it. I suggest doing the thing suggested below. People who are having trouble setting mp3s as ringtones, I think you lot should read below as the answers there. overall I am happy with the phone and features. ;)

i have this phone and the bluetooth does not seem to be working at all..... for some reason it will not connect to the phone and i am wondering if i am doing something wrong... i got samsung s500i after been coaxed into by o2 who said the d600 (which i requested) wasnt available . i charged the phone up for 16 hrs before i switched it on 1st time. switched it on and the battery lasted only 8 hrs and 5 hrs of that were on standby! i hadnt even used bluetooth or anything just put some aac and mp3 files on. this phone looks good and has a good camera and a really good memory with transflash memory slot but unfortunately for me i need a better battery and im outdoors for 10-11 hrs everyday so i will be sending it back to o2 tomorrow .

ste: i had the same problem when i transferred pictures on to the s500i when using my old sim - the pictures are linked to whichever sim is in the phone at the time they are saved. you have two options 1. use the sim from your old phone whenever you want to use the pictures 2. transfer the pictures to you computer and send them you you phone using the samsung software

ben: to change your APN you need to go to settings and i mode settings and change it to either pay and go or postpay depending which you are. all the prepay tariffs are now imode compatible so that should not need changing

I've had this phone for around a week, and I'm happy with it - the best thing is the looks. dodo: relax, the buttons are all black Here's the secret to setting mp3s as ringtones, and you don't need nero or itunes. 1.Just load up the Samsung PC studio Sound Editor 2.Load up your mp3, at this point it would probably be best to edit it, so you get the exact sound you're after - use copy and paste to repeat it if you want 3.Then select "To Phone" 4.Change the file type from *.mp3 to *.acc 5.Change Setting from default to user setting 6.This bit is all about making the file smaller, so change it from stereo to mono, 44100 hz to 8000 hz, and the bit rate to 96 (or whatever works for you) 7.Select ok - the file will then be converted 8.Then in search folder, select the "Music" folder - and it's there! 9.Access the phone, and go to settings, sound settings and incoming call 10.Here comes the science bit - highlight and select ringtone, select music, highlight your ringtone, select options, select 'select', and robert's your father's brother! There is no other way to make an acc file your ringtone... but I haven't bothered to try other formats... Finally, the manual's rubbish - if it were any good, half the messages on this site wouldn't be here!

Ash: Thanks for replying, but I bought it sim free offline,because the shop told me that I could use my old sim card and it would work no problem (which it does) but I just can't get the i-mode facilities, but now I know why. Ben: Sounds like you have not been moved onto a compatible i-mode tariff yet. Is this a new deal or an upgrade? I got mine on an upgrade and they forgot to switch me to the i-mode version of my tariff, and I was getting the same message you are. Hope this helps.

There has been a few posts about accessing WAP and emails. You cannot access WAP or retrieve POP3 emails because of the I-Mode facility. I-Mode is an alternative to WAP, and as mentioned I-Mode has its own email service I-Mail, this is why POP3 not included in phone. I-Mode is only available on O2 in the UK.

To use mp3/aac files as ringtones you need to upload them to the phone using Samsung PC Studio version 3.0 ONLY this version appears to work with the USB cable - earlier ones only use COM port or IR. Once installed, it will auto detect the phone by USB, driver files required for Windows come with PC Studio. There is also a size limit on music files for ringtone use. Try encoding them at a lower quality/bitrate.

I forgot to say that you'll have to define your m4a file by the music and video menu, not by the settings/ringtone/coming calls one, in the menu where you can reach all your files, mp3, other files, images, etc.. you get into the music/videos menu, and by getting into the options of the file you want, you will be able to define it as a ringtone and this without any limit, hope it'll help you.. the problem of the lense is a litlle bit disappointing, it makes me think that they made the mobile in a hurry; on SGH-E720, the two lenses worked.. it's a pity

I've just tried getting mp3 to work as a ringtone and just about managed it with the help of some previous posts. I found that you can use something like Nero Wave Editor to convert mp3 to mp4 but you have to rename it with an .aac extension - mp4 or m4a did not work for me. The other thing is that there seems to be a limit on the file size. Someone mentioned 300k. I found files around 100k are ok but say 600k is too big. Re the flash - everyone talks about only one light working. It sounds like this is by design and the other one is just decorative!

I SIMPLY LOVE THIS PHONE, i was very disappointed when I knew that i couldn't put specific ringtones on it, but I managed to with the help of itunes, you have ton convert your MP3 in AAC or M4A and transfer it on the phone, you'll be able to put what ringonte you want and without any specific limit, that work with mine, I hope it'll help you, expect that, the phone is awesome, very good quality of videos, and large display, the only thing I can regret is the only one lense working.. but I can help without that too :p

I have just been upgraded with this phone all very good, but the battery compared to my previous phone (p510) is not very reliable. Is there a way this can be overcome? I have an email a/c with yahoo as well as an o2 email a/c with o2 that I set up via o2 active on my old phone. Ive been told that as the s500i has i-mode, I cannot access any of my old email accounts and can only use one been created via i-mode. I have important emails I need to access and this is no use to me. Also, the booklet that came with the phone states that you cannot access any wap sites with this phone. Any help on these two issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just a quick note, the light for the camera and the light for the 'torch' function when the phone is closed, are both the same light not different ones. So the phone flash light only works on one side...

On the headphones question - yes, I used the headphones from my D500 with this...but there are some supplied with the S500i that are black and more flexible than the d500 - 720 and 730 also have the proprietary connector if I am not mistaken...you should be good to go.

Mary and Ste - the only place this is available for us US customers is EBAY...I bought mine about a month ago and had the seller unlock it in the UK. one note...you have to manually adjust the band settings to gsm 1900 as the phone comes native 900/1800. its easy...but when you buy it off ebay, make sure to have the seller have it unlocked at a shop. mine ran a little under $300, but its well worth it. A side note..the stereo bluetooth is awesome - I bought a $100 anycom bluetooth stereo headset, it works great for music but the mic is junk for calls. Anyone know where to get an extra batter for this? I can find them anywhere :(

Great phone, got it yesterday. No problems but does anyone know if it is possible to turn the infrared on for sending more than one file? If i queue up more than one file to send, the infrared turns itself off after the first file has been recieved.

Just got this phone and seeing as previously I've had the e700 I certainly like! I'd already read all the various problems and still decided to get it for several reasons: 1) Most of the problems seemed to have a workaround solution (battery life probably will suck but I think you can buy better batteries or failing that just carry a spare!). 2) I prefer the clamshell design over the sliding type, wanted an imode phone and I'm used to Samsung. 3) I don't mind admitting it but I'm a fair Star Wars fan and seriously, if Darth Vader had a phone, this would be it! ;) Ta guys!

a quick comment on the flash. -- think logically, if the flash was on both sides of the camera lens, the picture would come out too bright, right? -setting mp3s as ringtones has been a problem for me (im still working it out) the .aac files dont work for me; it still says its not valid, same with the 3pg.. and the files are under 300k. help would be nice? lol --also i think the built in usb port means (correct me if im wrong) that its usb2.

i just got this fone about 3 weeks ago, it seems good except the battery life. im thinking about sendin it back cuz it runs out after sending about 5 texts,if that, a day. i take it to school, mayb send one txt ther and then i bring it home n send about 10 txts and by 8 in the evenin the battery has died. can u buy a stronger battery 4 it or shall i just send it back?? i had the problem with the mp3 as ringtones but once i got past the trouble of getting them on the fone (which took about 2 weeks) they set as ringtones fine, but that might be cuz i use itunes. the flash only works one side of the camera too. please help me with the battery!!

- The camera is 1.3 megapixel - The flash is a problem on most phones but doesnt really affect quality of pic - The phone uses a transflash memory card - The battery life is poor due to it being a powerful phone - Yes the phone has video - MMS is limited to attachments under 100k (i think) I cant remember any other of the questions!!

I recieved a replacement phone from O2 after complaining about the flash and the battery. The replacement phone's battery is still rubbish and the flash still only works on one side of the lens. I guess its meant to be like that???? Has anyone else found that the sound quality of voice calls are rubbish and its hard to hear what people are saying?

bought the fone unlocked on ebay. used it fine with my sim but no mms / wap / i-mode etc. Got O2 to change my account to an i-mode tariff. Now all my mp4's are blocked and its saying "sim drm activated" when I try to play them or set them as ringtones!! any ideas??

Hey, in reply to the problems some people are having with the flash, i've contacted O2 and they tell me its a fault with my phone and they're replacing it.... so make sure you all get one that works properly too! My battery life is also really short, but that might be my phone too. Apart from that the phone is great. By using the samsung software to convert mp3s to aac files and storing them in the music folder you can use them as ringtones, but they have to be less than 300kb big. and i can't set different ringtones for different people, so if anyone knows how to do it please help!

pretty nice piece of work..I have a few comments: 1. tried the 3gp workaround...but the sound quality is not as good. It does work though :) 2. This guy is light. My old phone was a d500 and it feels heavy in comparison. I am still getting used to the difference in weight. the build is good on the s500i, but it definitely doesnt feel as sturdy as the d500. No way the d500 is 99g and the s500i is 98g...more like 80g. 3. The screen is awesome. I have downloaded photos to this and when you hit the volume key while viewing, you can blow up the photo and then save as wallpaper. A very nice feature and it allows you to really utilize the screen space. 4. I am still having trouble with the mms set up and use. I am reading the user guide, but the interface seems much more complicated than the d500. My phone is unlocked (I love ebay, haha) and I have cingular, so if anyone is in the same boat I would appreciate tips on set up as I am using the tedious trial and error process with the info on cingular's support page. 5. Does anyone know if you can change the sms font? its awfully anorexic compared to the rest of the fonts used on this bad boy. 6. Is one side of the flash just a dummy? On close inspection, the left side seems to have a yellow color like the led flash on my d500, but the ride side doesnt have that, nor does it light up with calls or for the flash...is it just there for cosmetic purposes or are both sides supposed to light up (and blind my friends when I take pics)? overall, I give this phone a thumbs up...it's a definite change from the d500, but the reduced weight, card slot and screen make this the lightweight champion in my opinion.

There have been many requests over the internet for putting MP3 ringtones on the S500i I have managed it but have had a slightly different workaround, let me know how you all get on with this method. OK .. heres what I found. I had an MP3 and dumped it into the MP3 folder and it plays fine, but it wont set as ringtone. I then converted to WAV, didnt work, converted to AMR, same process, over to phone via Samsung software, plays, but wont set as ringtone, says not allowed. So tried an i-mode ringtone, subscribed for free for a month, and then downloaded the tune I wanted. Heres what I noticed. The downloaded tune through i-mode was a TRUETONE, not an MP3, and had the file extension of 3gp !! I recon that if you get an MP3 to 3gp convertor, then you should be able to convert your MP3 of choice, and dump it to the phone and use as ringtone. A little bit more fiddly than before but at least its a workaround. Wont be able to test the 3gp theory until I get home from work though ... hope this helps

Hi everyone, I have recently got this phone and I have a few comments about it. My first impressions were I liked it! very stylish design and the jet black finish i a nice touch. I have had a similsr 'problem' with the flash on the camera - it only seems to light up one side. Seems to me like a design fault, but I've played around with it a bit and cant find a way to get both lights on. One bad thing about the i-mode sites; it has a very extensive travel section - you can get live flights from any airport, but the thing I really need is live train times and I cant seem to find them anywhere! I havent tried to set mp3 as ringtone yet, but will have to do sson cause to be honest, the preset tones aren't the best. Generally, I am v.impressed with this fone. I got it on O2 �35/month proce plan and its a very good package I think! Hope these comments help you all, Lemm

great phone mp3 ringtones is really annoying! Anyway the best way ive found so far goes like this. Open your music file in something like nero wave editor >> save as an mp4 file >> rename from .mp4 to .m4a then send to phone using the phone explorer hope that helps someone

hay, im thinking about purchasing a samsung s5009 and it seems like a very good phone on the o2 website, however im concerned about the memory but as james says you can get a different memory card which seems like a good idea which i may do. recently had the phone 2 days now, very similar in many ways to the d500 which was my last phone, but the video seems sharper and moves more smoothly, so thats a bonus, loudspeaker is built in which is also an improvemnt on the d500's external attacment. Yes 1 or 2 probs, mp3 wont play as ringtomes, can set mp4 files tho! and im having a problem with getting my gprs and mms to work, have tried to set up thru O2 website but they dont have this phone in the list... atm i cant send or recieve pic messages or videos and i cant use i-mode internet... any ideas on how to fix this or get the settings? any feedback would be very much appreciated

In order to display your contacts on your sim and phone separately, you have to press first 1 then # sign, meaning you are about to view your first contact in the sim. scroll up and down to view each contact according to location. Press 0 until + sign appear, then 1 and then # signs, meaning your are about to view your contact on your phone, scroll to view each contact according to location. I hope it will work.

Hmm, before I bought the phone I was curious about the 2 / 1.3 MP camera issue tho it does indeed seem to be 1.3. Haven't put any mp3s on yet, but am very disappointed to read that I can't set them as ringtones. Sending a text is a little more faffy than it was with my old sony ericsson K700i but nothing majorly upsetting. What IS bothering me though is this: I wanted to associate a picture with a contact, so that when they rang it would pop up with their dedicate picture/ringtone etc. In order to do that, I had to first copy all of my contacts to PHONE memory. So I did this, but now my contacts are all duplicated when I scroll through them (one from phone, one from sim) and there appears to be NO option to 'view from sim only' or 'view from phone only'. This is irritating me as there are now close to 500 contacts i have to look through instead of 250!! Someone please tell me Im missing something. OTHERWISE, nice phone. Better looking and nicer display than my old phone, but I'd rather go back to the sony erricsson one personally if the joysticks didnt keep breaking!!

I got one of these yesterday and it's got a 1.3m/pix camera. Not overly impressed so far. You can't play MP3's or .acc files as ringtones. You need either .3gp or MFi (melody format for i-mode) to get decent ringtones. Not as intuitive to use as my old Nokia - but then I've had nokia's for the last 7 years. Looks nice tho'.

regarding mp3 ringtones this is unfortunatly not possible howevever if u use itunes and convert inot aac format then u can copy them into the muisic folder this is then possible to set as ringtones. phone however apart from that is very impressive i recommend it to evry one despite the wot people say about the look if it, the camera comes close to the sony erricsons k750i and the 256 mb memory card is only 17.99 allowing a high amount of songs with excellent quality.

Hrmm i wonder what the video quality is like on this the e720 is the best mobile phone you can get for recording video quality wise, its as clear and smooth as silk however the call quality is poor. If this has good call quality you can be gauranteed the video will be poor. Seems to me samsung never makes a moble phone that does each feature well and the reason is because they want you to keep buying their new model up. If they were stupid enough to release a mobile that had good bluetooth good video good picture quality with memory slot then nobody would want to buy a new phone until some other new technology was introduced like for example a phone that has 14 days battery life from fuel cell battaries.
