If you own the Euro Sharp 902, it should be able to play any MP3's that you put on the card, if you own the Sharp 902SH (The Japanese version) Then most likely your MP3's WON'T play because they put a smart lock, where the MP3's gotta be officially licensed. That's what I was told. LOL. Its a great phone BTW, (Full Metal Panic, Sosuke's phone, ^_^)

FOR MP3 RINGTONES check my post written at 2007-07-31 12:20. To correctly set the internet (gprs) settings can be really hard, but not impossible. Just ask your provider for your settings, APN, IPs, gateways etc.. and try it!

I see that other people have been having my same problem but I don't see any answers so I'll ask again: my 902 turns on, asks for the pin, says initialising, then goes back and asks for the pin again.Vodafone says to bring it in for upgrading but that will take 2 months to get the phone back!!does anyone know if and/or how I can do this myself at home???I really like this phone and would hate to buy a different one..Thanks!!

So here is how to set a REAL MP3 to ringtone on your 902. First of all, u need a card reader and a working wap (or internet) connection in your 902. First thing u have to do is to download a DRM (copyrighted) mp3.. you can buy some on the internet but try this one (this is a test drm mp3): Enter this URL into your phone, it will ask you to download the file called TEST.dm or TEST.mp3. Save it to Phone memory (this time, saving to memory card is not supported, you cannot transfer copyrighted materials.) After saving it, you will see a new item under My Items \ Sounds & Ringtones, labeled 'Test', with a picture of a key. So go there and press Options and you will see a new menu 'Set as Ringtone'. Do it:) So you have a phone now with an mp3-ringtone.. but how about using your own mp3's as mp3 ringtones? RENAME the 'TEST' (Options \ Rename) and select a different name, for example 'DRM'. Transfer your own mp3 (for example 'STING') to the phone memory (use Audacity or similar programs to cut mp3s to the lenght and size you want). RENAME the 'STING' to 'TEST' and that's it.:) Important.. 902 won't like MP3 with VBR.. I prefer 128k-192k files.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FAVORITE MP3 AS RINGTONE ON YOUR SHARP 902 First of all you have to convert your mp3 into wav, there are many free tools, you might already have one :) when you convert to .wav, set: Bit As Source, FREQ: 24000Hz and 1 Channel (Mono) conversion takes seconds. second, launch Yamaha's WSD (Wave Sound Decorator) (you can download it for free here: (just fill in the fields and click �agree� button) open the wav you just converted with WSD go to EDIT -> Sample Type -> and uncheck both boxes (Resampling Freq and Mono Conversion) since you did these 2 in DB, its uneccesary. Select MA-5 in the upper left drop down menu, now I have noticed that MA-5 in techno makes it a bit too loud, so you should experiment. after you select the part of the file you wish to play on the phone, go to Edit -> Trimming. this will delete the rest. Make sure your file is UNDER 300kb (you can tell the size of the remaining file after trimming by looking at the bottom right part of the program, in the info bar). save as .mmf now, in your Sharp transfer utility (or whatever its called) simply click on the 'Melodies' tab, click browse and find wherever you saved it. select it and click upload to phone. to set this as a ringtone, go to your phones menu , My Items -> Sounds & Ringtones (when you upload through your utility, it automatically puts it there). It seems quite complicated in the beginning but when you get used to it, you'll make it in matter of some minutes! TIP: cut your favorite part from the mp3 before you perform theabove actions, you'll gain time ;) Enjoy!

Here's how you convert mp3's to .mmf so they work with The Sharp 902. 1. Create and/or edit the content (mp3file) in The Audacity Free Audio Editor and Recorder. (google it) 2. Export to .WAV file in Audacity. 3. import the .WAV file using WSD wave sound decorator. (google it) Set the setting to MA-3, and export as a .mmf file. (I've managed to get files up to 350k to work, alyhough it seems to differ somehow, dont ask me how or why that is.) 4. Put the MMF file in your SD cards ringtones folder and then send the file as an MMS to yourself. The file then has to be saved on your phones ringtones folder, as ii tont work if its on the SD card. (Or create an account with services such as Zedge etc and then download it on to your phones memory.) That's how I do it. There might be other ways to do it, but thats how I roll. ;) Sweden rules btw.

sharp 902 can only assign those mp3 file that are directly downloaded to the handset, and with the size not above 100kb. so you can transfer a mp3 songs to your handset from the pc and set it as the rington. you can use your handset to get on the internet, and download an mp3 song that are below 100kb, and assign it as rington. one way of doing this, is to use the nokia's media pack to retransform your big size mp3 songs into a smaller size, put it onto the internet, and download it from your handset, then assign your mp3 songs as rington.

Its a great phone specially the white colour! The dessign is actually more atractive than the V903. I did also had that problem with the reception (london) sometimes it didnt accept calls ....i changed the hanset lluckily found another one in stock which i ggot stolen. i have now got the 904 from Japan but unfortunately haven't been able to unlock it yet !! ??

To everybody with the MP3 problem for ringtones, this is what sharp has to say; Is it possible to assign a MP3 as a ring tone? Only MP3 ringtones downloaded directly to your handset using WAP from a MP3 ring tone provider that support the Open Mobile Alliance DRM 1.0 Forward Lock mechanism will work. This is to prevent any possible breach of copyright.

ANSWER TO JERALD: The passcode for bluetooth is 9999. your sharp 902 must be euro firmware beacause if it is japan firmware you cannot play mp3 file. only amr files. If your using japan firmware u must convert it first to amr file. you can identify japan and euro firmware by going to message: If your space in typing a message is number o your firmware is already euro, but if your space is your scroll right button your using japan firmware. I have this phone, i got it for my birthday in july. I bought it in Portugal for 400 euros and now that i've moved back to australia im still using it. However i had to get it unlocked, i'm still on a vodafone sim but it still didn't work with the sim cards from here. It's a fantastic phone, i love it. I still need to buy something to transfer stuff, but the camera is really good, i have 2 mp3s on it and they play with excellent quality. I highly recommend this phone, and don't see myself trading in for a different one anytime soon.

If you have 902 then u need to have a usb card reader for your SD card. You can use bluetooth to send and receive files but for effortless transfer to ur pc and vice versa get a card reader cheap as dirt too. Please copy ur mp3 to drive name:>my items\sounds and ringtones folder or they wont play

I downloaded the Opera MINI web browser from the official site for the 902. you cannot download the Opera browser because its a symbian application you have to download mini which is a java based application. If your keypad and screen flickers while browsing set the backlight feature to remain on in the Games -> Settings menu. Also make sure mp3 are constant bitrate not variable

My husband has the 902 and it has gone to initalising twice. The first time it reset but this time it won't move off the intialising page. Has anyone had the same problem and if so, how did you get it to work again. There are much better phones out there than this one. He has had trouble downloading text/MMS messages as well.

NEDDY with regard to the lock feature it does not mean if u put the lock on msg it wont open , it means that it wont get deleted if u choose the delete all option.Sharp 902 does not have sms msg security lock.

Definitely a great phone to use, but one thing to watch for is the firmware. Best to use the Hong Kong firmware since without it, you need SD Audio software to load MP3s.

Can somebody please help me with this problem? Whenever i use the video recorder fuction the mobilelight turns blue even if i set mobilelight to off, it still shows blue. How do i off it? Again, my 902 freezes ie no key works again whenever i try to use BT or Infrared to download full track music video or music. It only works well for items with smaller bytes eg polytones. The phone doesn't even switch off again except i remove the battery and put it again, then phone begin to work well. I don't know how to go about this. Please help.

hello everyone. i just like 2 say that i have had the 902 4 10 months now.i think this phone could be alot better feature wise.the only thing the 902 has 2 offer is camra and video function.its the best quality i've ever seen 4 a phone. i've just recently upgraded to w900i.i think this phone is better than the 902 in every way.w900i has everything you want in a phone. i don't like how sharp phones have a amazing video and camra,but have crap features 4 the actual phone.

Can someone please tell me if regular browsing or downloading from mobile internet damage my sharp902? I had a sharp GX25 which was damaged beyond repair while i was downloading ringtones from a wap site. Again, what is the highest memory card that can be used? Up to 1gb? Info. I have 802 and 902 vodafone branded. Both work well for gprs and mms with networks here in Nigeria. I even configured them auto not manually. Opinions in gsmarena say it is not possible with 802 i am surprised.

Try putting your sim card in properly, When i 1st got this phone i didnt quite click the Sim in properly and it said what urs says. Or it's blacklisted, Sharps say "No Network" " Insert Sim" "Invalid Network Sim Card" or " Emergency Calls Only" Good luck bro!!!! Also a 903 is a good upgrade!! I upgraded from this model and 903 leaves 902 for DEAD!!

I have done a master reset on my 902sh (japanese version) bacause some of the options werent working. Now all that happens is the phone turns on says please wait ... then turns off and keeps doing it. If some one knows how to fix it could they please email me.

why is it when you send text message through 902, the sent message was not stored in SENT item box? Normally, almost of the cellphones do. right? One more thing, not all Mp3s and MIDI file can work as ringtones. But some can be. Incase it cant be, a message posted "Illegal file! can not set as ringtone." I wonder why.... i bought a 902sh with cingular service and i was trying to setup the gprs with the folling setting. (thx to Sciamo Eses who posted it originally) my problem is that for my version of the firmware user name in Proxy can only take 16 bytes(characters) and [email protected] is obviously longer than 16 characters thus so far i have not set it up yet. Is the .DM a small file? I assume so... Copy the .DM file with the .MP3 file. Copy both over, the phone only shows the .MP3 and refers to the background .DM for copyright info. Having never done it I'm just going by what i've researched, but my sources are pretty good, so i would be surprised if it didn't work. You should be able to confirm that. Look up Digital Rights Management on the Microsoft website. It talks about having the paired files.

guys there is a way! To play your own MP3 files as a ringtone you need to add DRM to the MP3 file first. The phone only allows MP3 files that are copyright protected. Find the DRM Packager software on the SonyEricsson Developer website. This allows you to add DRM to your own MP3s.

Vodafone has implemented the DRM (Digital Rights Management) on MP3 files and other copyright protected materials to do exactly that: preserve copyright. This way they kill two birds with one stone. They can exclusively sell MP3/AAC+ files (full-length) Chaku-Uta tracks that can be set as Ringtones, as well as staying legal and making profit. Once the files have been downloaded they can be transferred to your SD-Card to my knowledge, but can only be played on YOUR phone, not anyone elses. It's basically the same as iTunes and their Music store for the iPod series. The service in Japan has attracted more than 2 Million downloads in only one Month, with a choice of over 50.000 artists, and another couple thousands more soon. I don't know the pricing, but it's clever! The way for the future I'd say!

vodafone won't let you use your own mp3 striaght out of your PC. The only way mp3 can be set as ringtone is the one you downloaded from the service provider, which is vodafone. Vodafone's firmware was so set that you need to buy mp3 ringtone from them. Botton line, you can set mp3 as ringtone if you know the trick.

I got GPRS/MMS to work perfectly but I'm on sx813 firmware and in Thailand on a GSM network so that doesn't count. Which part of the headphone did you loose? If you didn't loose the microphone part that connects to the phone itself, any 3.5mm jack headphone will do. However, there is a remote control headphone available in japan and hongkong so that you don't have to drag out your phone if a call interupts when you listen to mp3 to get into the media player again. Its pretty neat (with LCD display on the remote). And no, the bluetooth problem happens to K700 too but not the k750 not only S700.

don"t been cheat by the cg silicon cam/colour. this v902 picture is not so good (still can eccept).If open the picture at the phone is quite good but preview at the PC is another thing.suck more white.If using ZOOM, oh my gods that is more suck. K750i more better when the picture send to computer. i reseacrh the picture Quality about some 2MP phone.even CMOS cam also good. i have this two phone i not recommended for K750i but w800i is same. Sharp also good but the vodafone lock everything so is can't fight with other,phone. my advise here, don't try the v902 or v902sh or sx-813 (hongkong version). wait for the v903. v902 still expensive right now not worth for this phone. i have the black/grey colour v902sh just selling.only used two weeks.not suitable for me.the one thing i hate is the battery. HI guys...I have no problem playing mp3 using the phone memory. Just using the HD manager provide by the phone package, and drag the sonys from the pc to the phone memory.It should not be a problem.

I use the avi_mpg_asf_wmv_splitter.exe along with 3GP_converter cuz its easy but the quality wouldn't be as good as MediaStage tho...And yes....Sharp has problem with Sony Ericsson phone and not Nokia...Trying to send from them will cause their phone to freeze and reboot...but we can send it over to them without problem....If you need help with the SD_Video and MP3...check out the www.howardforums.com and you'll find some answers there if not all.

i have no problems with my SD card and mp3 player. i just bought CARD READER\writer put my SD 1gb card to it. take some music from my PC and put it in SD vodafone/private/my items/sounds and ringtones/ whats all. no formating no nothing. 3gp video sucks i have software there i can convert video to ASF and watch movies or clips in full screen. quality is perfect. worse thing what i cant get stereo headphones i have only hands free then i put video to my phone its not loud and sometimes i cant hear everything. i think the bigest problem of 902 is what it is too quiet, and mp3 cant be used for ringtone.

The MP3s have to go in a special folder - the folder structure is created when you format an SD card. You also must direct the music player to look at the SD card. This folder is \PRIVATE\VODAFONE\My Items\Sounds & Ringtones - but format the card first! The MMS settings for Cingular I do not know... however I have been able to get the GPRS working thanks to another's help: 1) First put the Access Point in and then the Proxy. 2) When you use it it will come up with an error! You must either use a bookmark or type in a URL for it to work. I tried changing the home page in the Proxy Settings but it did not help me... live with the initial error and just direct it to a web page. New User, I've Bluetooth'd contacts from my Nokia 6230 to the 902SH and never had a problem. Make sure that you're discoverable... and read any prompts it sends you. As far as Infrared goes, the top end of the phone where you could tie a lanyard has a little black plastic area - that's the IR. You have to hold the phones within 20CM of each other. Yours, Sciamo

Tank, In the 902SH go to Settings --> Memory Settings --> Format Card. Then you'll see all the folders and subfolders for you to put things in to on your card. Yours, Sciamo

Xuan, It isn't so much a flash, it is more of a light. Whilst in camera mode, go to options and you'll see it listed. Also on the side of the phone near the volume, there is a button next to the volume for the camera and next to that another button. Hold this second button for 1 second and it turns this light on (called "pen light" or "flash). Once it is on you can use the volume buttons to cycle through the colours - the last of which makes it strobe through the colours itself in "disco" mode. Sciamo

My 902SH is unlocked/Japanese and I put MP3s on - works great. The max is 192 bit rate/48MHz and anything lower is fine. I formatted the 1GB SD card and put them in the \PRIVATE\VODAFONE\My Items\Sounds & Ringtones folder - access them through the music player, pointing it to the SD card. I also successfully put 3GP videos and images on. Still trying to work out MPEGs and of course the games problems... but I cannot get on Cingular GPRS yet. Sciamo

hi, bin trying to download music tracks to my sharp 902 from, my computer. After months of trying and realising there is no way of legally doing it, the manager in a vodafone store told me that unblocking codes can be accessed over the internet in the form of a dmx code. So... I've gone through all the settings on all the web sites for the Cingular GPRS... even on their own web site. The only issue I can find is that the user name is [email protected] and the Sharp only has spaces for 4 less than that length! What to do :-(

I just got the phone this morning. I really like it after working out the MP3 problem (has to be a bit rate of 192 or less - I was trying higher), formatting the SD card so you know where to put MP3s, and so on. It is a very nice phone. However I have spent over an hour on the Internet attempting to find step by step setup instructions for MMS and Internet for Cingular (North America). Loads of people ask, some people partially answer, but nobody seems to be able to give a step by step process - there is always something missing or just a bunch of settings without a logical order. Anyone know?

To Ricardo: You have to identify the port where the usb bluetooth is plugged in in the HSManager go to interface configuration and chose the right port. To Timmy: Hey man you probably have the 902 and not the 902SH kuz mine just won't read the mp3 i put on it...

FOR "rookie" i have one of these, you can flim as long as you like and it's full screen with auto focus ,including light correction while fliming, understand it is not a camcorder, but OMG very close as per quailty, at this point, very fones have this kind of quailty i also have tried the s700i and the p910 this the 902 wins handset down!

Thx Seccy, I already know that this kind of bluetooth can work in my PC to connect my phone, my only problem is that when i install the bluetooth, the SHARP manager doesn�t find the phone, the program keeps always saying "trying to connect" nothing else... I need to know if there is any additional configuration to this start working... I saw in the SHARP manager Help file something about MY BLUETOOTH PLACES, but i can�t find nothing of that in the PC... and the virtual COM door that the bluetooth is using i also can�t find... RICARDO, You can use the USB bluetooth...i have a normal one ...install the driver and it will work......i even managed to let sound come out of my pc speakers instead of my phone via bluetooth. I like it...except internal memory is not alot, and also speakerphone is not as loud as my Nokia 9300. Seccy

Hi Hugo: I just use the MP3 player on the phone it's self. I don't have jukebox whatever that is?? People are making this phone seem like an old dog!! Its simple, instal HS Manager and coppy them on!! ITS SIMPLE!!!

Hay Robert: you will need Sharp V902SH PC Suite and you can just download the songs from Kazza or wateva sharing program you use and HS Manager sends it to the phone. Leo: Sounds like you got a real dodgy phone!! my sharp only takes like a few secs to open up a msg. Take it back to Vodafone surley it has a warranty???

Hay i LOVE radio 2!! thats what is good about the SE K750i!!!! and some Nokia phones. The quility of the Sharp's MP3 Player is good, just get a V902 and buy a 1G memory stick and you pretty much got yourself an iPod with a 262K Lcd and a Camera lol.

Harry: You can just use Handset Manager go to the "File transfer" option and when you have a SD Card in the phone it is Drive "E" just coppy the MP3 files onto it under "Sounds and Ringtones"

ricardo: you have to go into the bluetooth settings and go "services" see which COM port the Sharp V902 is on, then go into handset manager and go options (seccond button up the top of HS manager) and go "interface setup" choose the COM port the Sharp V902 is on and it should connect. when the phone asks if you want to go off line and connect via bluetooth go yes. All Done!!

Denise: i had a K750i and it was not as cool as the V902 Sharp, it is way smaller but the sharp has stereo speakers and it alsp 3G which is cool. i don't know about the V800?? Go for the V902 its AMAZING!! Honest

And sorry big D_ik man lol, it does have 3D apps and you can also play them shrough your T.V with the AV cords that are included in the box. It just dosn't come with an SD card but their cheep enough!! I really do recomended this phone!! i give it a 9 1/2 out of 10

This phone has no fults. It has no FM radio but a dam good MP3 playa in it!! it has built in stereo speakers and it comes woth stereo headphones. The screen in 240 by 320. i little bit bigger that the GX30. The Camera also has opticle zoom which is good!!

This phone is the best phone i have ever had!!!! Recomended buy!!!! No fults, and i have the Jap version with the SX813 S/W on it and it works a dream!!! The bluetooth is able to be used with any device. Don't know what people are on about when they are rubishing the Japanese version?? I have an iPod aswewl and the sound quality is just as good. yeah your'e right that Vodafone will be coming out with a 903 and a 904, but they are not stupid enough to be able to make the sofware unlockable. You better forget about getting a 903/904 and trying to unlock it becuase you won't be able to like the 801SH.

Hey!! Everyone...Be smarter.You must be not so non-thinikng persons. Sharp V903 and V904 are coming.! V903 comes out in August-September and V904 in winter( late christmas ). these are 3G . ( that's all what my sources tell me )....V903 will have a 2.4inch screen 262k colours with 3.2MP camera and v904 a 2.5" screen with 16.7million colours with 5MP camera. Both of the new phones will support mpeg4 with AAC stereo sound and they will have greater multimedia support. The V904 will be unbelievable perfect with support of H.264, 3gpp2 , divx , xvid. Great phones everyone..Just wait for them!!!! But I am more anxious about the 2006-2007 phones that will also have symbianOS platform in some of them. Sharp is gonna kick some a*s...WoW!!!

you have to use panasonic juke box sd card reader and Jukebox software so it will be a SD audio card other wise it wont play it, the panasonic SD jukebox encodes mp3's so the sharp902/802 J version can play it

Right if you want to play MP3 files on your 902 you need to format the 32mb SD card that came with through the memory card manager under SETTINGS. Now this will create folders that will show up when you plug it into a SD slot on your PC. Now you need to move MP3 files to the SOUND folder also they must have a bite of either 128kb or 192kb which is max. 256kb won't play MP3 files must on the card in order for the phone to play them MP3's won't transfer to phone memory and you can't use MP3's as ringtones. All this from a guy who owns a GX30i sheeesh

U guys need to read some other forums like www.howardforums.com and go to Sharp 902...its a lot more sophisticated...and yes, the Japanese version 902SH can do everything exactly as the UK version....u just need to unlock it at the right place...I'm using a 902SH flashed with sx813 firmware....(sx813 is the HK version of 902SH)...Good luck...

I bought it and it's awesome..the camera is great, you must only pay attention not to move the phone when you are snap shotting but its great!!..saving time its not a problem..3-4 second the best quality (it take 20 seconds only if you have very low memory space)...the screen is the best i've ever seen and everything works perfectly...and moreover its not a smartphone which means no operative system and no viruses nor other useless problems linked with os!!

I upgraded to the 902 from the GX30. However when I put in the SD card from the GX30 into the 902 it would not show any picture files. When I checked memory status it read "pictures 0%" but "other data 77%". Has anyone else found this? Why wont my 902 read the files on my GX30 SD card? What should I do?

Terrible nothing but trouble for me. I had to take this phone in twice (in Japan) to update software. The phone set heats up and I`m really unhappy that I wasted my time and money. Had problems with sending mail and camera isn`t great. NOT RECOMMENDED

i think this is the best phone if we consider quality and price...and smartphone should never be taken into consideration because with their OS they are already full of bugs and viruses! lol..for example i will never buy a nokia n90 because it is a smartphone and i will never buy a SE k750 because it is not a UMTS phone... if you are looking for photo quality wait for the samsung p850 (3mpixels) or the p860 (5mpixels + 16milion color screen!)

the biggest sd/mmc it'll support is 1gb and there is firware for the sx813 that has NO restriction at all regarding all functions abt the 902 so if i were u juz get the sx813 and juz flash it

When you're converting it to MP3 use a higher kbps setting. over 144 kpbs to get a better sound quality.

By the way if you are living in Japan, DoCoMo has a SH901iC by Sharp which can record video directly to the handset (DVD,VHS, etc.)! It's awesome, quality made, kind of makes the 902SH old stuff. The SH901iC with a 512MB mini SD card, it can record up to 4 hours in fine mode amazing picture quality! and of course the 2MP camera takes better quality than the 902SH to me. Great piece if equipment, with i-mode and all the good stuff!!!!!

Inside news from the guy's in Japan from Vodafone. The new 902SH Vodafone is selling now with contact, will not be able to unlock. apprently they did something to the software so the old unlocking method won't work. Be careful buying a Japan brand 902SH!

Sharp uses AQUOS technology (much smaller grain that TFT (Thin Film Technology) that makes the screen so much better, and even be able to see from 60 degree angle where other LCD screen will be black when you look from that angle. Not only Japanese 902 and 802's are affected! My European version was plagued with frozen screen, lock-up, etc. It went back to the UK for software update. sadly sharp have a non transferable copyright policy so you cannot tx/rs data ect via bluetooth/ir this i found out from themselves , and there is no software upgrade as i know available , so they tell me , sharp need to get real , ..

Hiya! In Hong Kong, I can only find 2 version of 902, one is the SX 813 from Smartone, another one is the Japanese version in the shops! All of them said it can't play MP3 as ringtone in the Japanese version. How come a nice mobile can't play mp3 as ringtone? Have heard about dm file, but really don't know if it will work on the Japanese version, and I don't know how can I find a software making it and wouldn't cause problem with windows XP! Any suggestion? Even MMF software, I have no idea to look for it here, but I think MMF wouldn't be accepted to "RING" on such a high-quality mobile, right? I like the screen, high quality and big enough, that's why I still prefer 902 but not the newest Sony Erisson.....

A new but not great phone from Sharp. The picture quality is not impressive at all, seems no better than a GX30 at half the pixels, it still is a phone/camera and not a camera/phone. Here in the UK it is only avaiable in silver/white not black. Looks far better in black. Mp3 ringtones can be assigned but need to be converted to a mmf format first. Feels very fragile when you use it, and gives the impression the first drop will be the last. For anyone who loves there Nokias, stick to them, the Sharp phones are not so customizable especially if you have a Symbian based mobile.

I'm not to sure if you can make MP3 into a ringtone. I think it has to be in a MIDI format. I'll have to see if MP3 can be set to a ringtone, but the length has to be less than 90 or 30 seconds on the 902SH.

Anyone figured the set-up for "email" section to work on the 902 on the T-mobile US network? I can use a email address of the 902 but it still goes into the SMS section... Maybe this is the only thing that will not work on the 902...

No problem Numo, pleasure to be of any assistance. Name is Mike. The only reason MP3 is locked on the Japanese version is because Vodafone KK (Japan) wants you to load music through "Vodafone Live" (a form of subscription and they make money from packet transmissions, i.e. 100 yen per 100KB of data). That's why the MP3 section is locked for the Japanese version. The only way I found out how to load music is to use a V801SH which can record either in analog/optical onto a SD card of the V801SH (of course you need to have a subscription with Vodafone on the V801SH or the multimedia section of the V801SH is useless) and that's about the only way I found ways to record music onto a SD card and be able to listen to music on the 902SH. I kind of like the Japanese version of the 902SH, to me the software seems more stable and it's better built (optical section) than the European version. Different software which the Japanese version has the Japanese IME font so I can use Japanese for mail (read/write Japanese), the European version is "read Only" Japanese 'kanji' software. Another nice thing is that the Japanese version comes with a charging cradle that makes it so easy to charge. Rather than use the plug on the bottom of the phone. The jack will eventually loosen and won't be able to charge if you keep plugging in and out. That's about all I can write about the difference between the two 902's. Hope you'll get the one you want! numo, The European version can be fully unlocked and MP3 player used. Japan model the "Sound&Ringtone" section is locked and cannot be unlocked therefore you cannot load MP3 and listen. Another difference is the camera section the Japan model has is own section called "DCIM" all photo taken are stored on this folder. The European version doesn't have the "DCIM" folder and all photo's are stored in the "pictures" folder under "data folder" I have both units and that the difference I have noticed so far numo. I hope this information will help.

Very good phone, slight bug with the MP3 player which causes the phone to lock until your hard reset (ie battery in and out), have had two 902's from vodaphone now, both have problem, cant be assed to send it back though as I got the video working and it rocks :D

It is the worst handset I have ever owned. There are problems with video calls, music downloads, video downloads, e-mail accounts and the 3G streaming is of poor quality compared to other handsets. The video recording itself is about on par with the very first 3G handsets. The signal for actually making calls is also poor. Only 8 meg handset memory!!

I don't know why the T-zone setting doesn't work on my 902 (European version). I'll try it on a Japanese version which I will be getting soon. We need CDMA here! iMode! GSM is too narrow banded, too slow!

The setting for the T-zone. I still get "Live.Vodafone.Com" and that's it, I can't do anything. Maybe 902 is not capable of accessing T-zone.

The DCIM on the SD card is specially made to store pictures taken on a Japanese 902SH and not on the European 902. The European 902 does not have a DCIM file, everything goes into "data folder" and then to "pictures". You can record MP3 onto the "data folder" under "sounds&ringtones", just use the software that came with the handset and get the cable and transfer MP3 to "sound&rongtone" file. good luck!

Hallo i was able to set up the 902 to access tzones the settings are as follows: Proxy settings Create new Proxy Name: tzones Proxy Address: 216.155.165.050 Access point: tzones home: Port Number: 8080 Authentication type: HTTP-Digest or Basic (does not matter) User Name: none (dont type anything) Password: none ACCESS POINT create new Access point name: tzones APN: wap.voiestream.com Authentication type: None User name: user Password: 9999 DNS: - Linger Time: 180 make sure you save the info that you input every time. with that you can access yahoo.com and other wap sites. it does support xhtml and therefore if the sites are not designed for wap you can not access them. Maybe there is a way but i got this far only. Good luck.

hallo i got the 902 from japan and i have some problems with it. The biggest problem is that everytime i access the main menu there is a message "Re-provisioning" that comes out asking to update. How can i eliminate this ? And on the SD card what does DCIM mean? The phone is sold as mp3 palyer but no mp3 can be played. Any solutions? Any help is welcome. Thanx.

Hey achan, I live in Hawaii and have 3 902's. One still has contract with Vodafone Japan (with 090 xxxx xxxx number) and on a Global Calling Plan for 540 yen a a month, the other is a unlocked European model which is locking up on me now days... And another is an recent unlocked model from Japan which I still haven't used much so I don't know of any existing problem. There is a slight difference between European and Japanese version, expecially the "Medial Player" which the European version does not have "SD AUDIO" option, but you can record and play music under "data folder" under "sounds $ ringtone" if you record in MP3 format onto the SD card. I'm also having problem going on T-zone. I guess no one has figured out the setting for T-mobile T-zone access for the 902... It's very hard with Proxy and other settings... Regarding ringtones, i've tried MP3 and it won't work, it has to be in MIDI format. Let me know if you find a way to get on T-zone!

beware that some Japan version of the 902SH cannot be unlocked according to sources from Japan. Certain IMEI numbered series can be unlocked. Even with a software and cable certain numbered IMEI series 902SH cannot be unlocked.

i have been trying out this phone for a day now... i finally got to play pseudo MP3 as ringtones...for the MP3, you can convert it to wav or aiff via itunes... it cuts the trouble of conversion 1) make sure audio is either in wav and aiff format and convert it to mmf format via YAMAHA WSC-MA2... IT is a free download. it is basically a drag and drop application. it works. 2) transfer the mmf file to your sd card under.. private/vodafone/my items/songs and ringtones 3) go to the data folder and open the ringtone, copy or move them to the main directory. 4) go to the sound settings, and viola.... you can change the ringtone my problem is my media player cannot read the mp3 nor the mmf that i loaded in my sd card... in the mysh-folder under audio.... no use... what the heck is the sd audio???? grrrr. hope i helped :)

You can assign mp3's as ringtones. Go to ebay search for sharp 902 and buy the info on how to do this (nothing to do with me). i had this phone but sent it back as it is very big and get bad reception with vodafone.

If you livein Japan and plan to stay there for awhile I would go for the SH901iC from FOMA. It will blow away the 902SH from Vodafone! 901iC can record from VHS, DVD, etc. If has a timer function which you can set and record your favorite show just like a timer on a DVD machine. Alot more great features than 902. Check out the SH901iC from FOMA!

Yes they do they are called USIM cards and Vodafone Live(3G) and Docomo Foma(3G) use them and the ones that are gsm as well as wcdma can be unlocked eg. V802se V902sh V802sh but mp3 option wont work cause you need to download the mp3's from vodafone or docomo service so that why the japanese phones sell super cheap because some features wont work on european and american networks, and if you get a japanese vodafone and want to but it on the european voda mp3 still wont work because they are coded different in japan.

To clarify an earlier post, ANYONE can get a Japanese cell in Japan, foreigner or not. Vodafone is the easiest, all it takes is some form of photo ID and a credit card. NTT sometimes asks for a huge deposit, KDDI will sell a phone to a beggar on the street... It's not illegal to sell an unlocked phone in Japan either, and it doesn't take a screaming phone call to Vodafone to get your phone unlocked. I just simply ASKED POLITELY and waited an extra day or two. Does anyone posting to thie forum, especially about the Japanese phones, even LIVE in JAPAN? REGARDS REGARDS

I bought the Japanese V902SH thinking that it was THE top of the line. Unfortunately for me, living in Japan for the last 8 years, it takes more than the V902SH to impress me. First off, it's slower than my year-old Toshiba V601T (Japan only) not only on geral menu functions, but running Java games, editing pictures, and accessing the SD card. The only thing really faster, of course, is my speed downstream, this is a 3G phone so in that respect, it's blazing fast. The camera takes good pictures, no doubt, but at the expense of slow autofocus and clunky operation. Whoever decided where to place the camera lense...idiot! The TV call functions work really great, even when calling my mate who has an NTT FOMA. Since it has a crappy external 2-color LCD display, there's no photo caller ID, or hardly anything else but time on the external display. The best thing for me, since I'm a longtime Vodafone customer, is that it only cost me 11,000yen, part of which was a service fee to carry my old number and copy my phonebook! But US$900...on eBay? Absolutely NOT worth it, unlocked or not. Even with a generous service plan, I wouldn't pay more than US$200, and I'm sure glad I didn't. Patience will bring you 1) lower price 2) easier unlocking (although it's not hard to get the Japanese version unlocked, contrary to belief) REGARDS

Hi, Im thinking about getting a sharp 902 from japan- are there any obvious problems in doing so (i know that the japanese 3g is more advanced software) and also- does the sharp 902 have a selection of themes? The music player can recognize only the amr format from 'sound and ringtone' folder which is very low quality. So I am little bit angry on this terminal :(. I have it! 1st of all, I didn't know how to operate the bloody thing, but when you get the hang of it, you'll be able to watch movies, listen to mp3's, video-phone, and even make your own (free!) ringtones (at this point I have hear my name by Armand van Helden, lovely). I know the phone if quite expensive, but if you fully use all of the phone's options, and you've got a few bucks to spare (paid �750,- for mine) then the phone will be up to the price... If you don't use all the options, but still have money, then I wouldn't buy it, because it is quite large, and not really stylish (white is quite nice, but not that hot...) Well, good luck deciding. I love it!

Tipu - Mp3 format is rip in two ways. Sharp only supports the common standard which is Constant Rate (e.g. always 128kbps) and memory saving Varible Rate (e.g. where music switches kbps depending on requirement) which saves more memory. If this doesnt solve it, then try ripping the mp3 again or trying a different SD card. If it still doesnt work, looks like a software fault.

Tipu - Mp3 must be places in the corrected folder for the phone to find it. PRIVATE - VODAFONE - My Items - Sounds & Ringtone. Do not place mp3 inside a folder, it must be place as a file. Also, the phone can't play MP3 over 192kbps.

All Japanese phones are locked to their rightful network, so its not against the law. Vodafone, DoCoMo, KDDI dont unlock phone at any prices as all their contracted phones are for residents and work permit holders living in Japan, not for visitors.

there is two ways.... one way is to call and scream at vodafone(japan) as it is illegal to sell lock products in japan (i heard from somewhere) and thus getting the mep code... or you could find a local unlocking stall you unlock it for you.. they have a software which can hack into the phone to find the mep code. for this two method i think it might work.. no promise though

i have just bought a sharp 902 and am waiting for it to arrive. i have a sharp gx30 and i really hope that the sharp 902's video is better because honestly the gx30's video suks. does the shap 902 have beter sound with the sterio sound compared to the gx30's mono, because the mp3's on the gx30 sound all tinny and rubbish. i might sound dumb here but is mp4 the video with the song. plz reply peeps

For 2 years i have been using the sharp gx 10i a fine specimen especially the camera and easy use of menu.I thought it would be hard to replace until the sharp released SH902 a brilliant and stylish bit of hardware.The introduction of a 2 mega pixel camera and video phone not forgeting the mp3 player was a great move. I have big clumbsy hands and the SH902 compliments them just nicely.I dont have to worry about losing my phone anymore and the only down fall is the battery life...its to short.

The sharp 902 is not better than the sharp gx30, and the camera is worse than the gx30 and dose not give as much sharpness to the photo waste of money!! Not happy I know this because I have got both phones.

well, heres how you put the code in if you already have the code... With your Vodafone simcard inside the phone type this code: *01763*6371# Now press the menu button. Scroll to "Settings" and press SELECT Scroll to "Security" and press SELECT. Scroll to "Mep locks" and press SELECT Enter your handset code (9999 is the default code) .and press OK. Scroll to "Network" and press SELECT Scroll to "Deactivate"and press SELECT Enter your given code and press OK. The handset should then say Done. Your phone is then unlocked and the MEP Locks section dissapears. Hope this helps.

If you have an unlocked 902, you can use it in USA without a problem (I'm using mine on T-mobile). No, you won't be able to make video calls because the netword does not support it yet.

Is the photo quality of this phone could be compared to the best 2 megapixel regular digital camera? Also, how is the voice clarity? I checked the voice clarity on TM150 and that was amazing one (like on the best very old nokia 3390, 3310, even little better I think). I hope 902 sh has the same or even more clearer sound.

The sharp 902 is not as sharp as speculated i used the phone to cut my hair but ended up calling my good friend Jacob. he was upset. This camera has a phone on it the camera is the most important aspect of this phone especially when its turned off. I like this phone but tastes horrible with smoked salmon sandwiches. I would recommend this phone for anyone that wants to buy a phone that has a lot of numbers and cutlery. I also recommend the sony ericsson forp. This phone is out in 400 years and will provide a one trillion pixel camera and a memory card thats very big and big. This phone comes with a cook my dinner feature and will make u toast on request and then u have to look at it to make sure it doesnt break after u hardly have it.

Paul ur ASSUMING alot of what you are saying. Yes your "5 mega pixel camera" may have the battery life you stating and it cant possible be possible for a mobile to have the battery life peeps are saying. BUT you camera uses a much more advanced processing chip than a 2 mega pixel camera fone chip hence the fone having a longish abttery life on a relatviely small output battery. ATTENTION Does paul really know his stuff???????

Tp MinKim: Hmmmm, are you using the same type of rechargable batteries? Because as far as I know, rechargable batteries are pretty much similiar (2-3 different brands produce them). It is amazing that this ussue can be caused by the phone. I believe you and will try to switch to more expensive brand (kodak is actualy way too cheap comparing to others).

I bought a Vodafone from the UK, it's plagued with junk software, everything operate slow, to open a file or mail it will take 30 seconds or more! paid over $900 for the phone and it's a piece of junk. I'll have to send it back for software upgrade. I hope that will solve the problem.

TO PEN: Thanks alot for a positive answer about 902sh. Finally we got one decent review of the phone. Now we will know that 902 sh is not a toy like samsung p730/p735 is. We need more reviews like yours,so people can know about necessary things not about blue tooth (fot lazy folks) or about 3d games. For those 1 megapixel Samsung phones few people complained that ones you take 3-5 pics and talk 30 min on the phone the battery is drained. Well, now we see that Sharp is superior (as Japanese always are). Panasonic is catching up Samsung very quick as well. Go Panasonic! Go Sharp!

Dont slag it off unless you've tried it, i have one on Vodaphone UK and havent had any problems what so ever, the battery lasts me 2-3 days with constant use. about 3hrs talk and about 15-20 pics then browsing voda live!. the camera difference even shows when making video calls if you dont believe me try it!

Ok folks, lets cut off all B/S about magapixel camera phones. I'm not an expert, but neither an idiot (since I have a 5 megapixel digital camera with rechargable batteries of 1300 mah which is enough for about 50 photos). Come on, be real! What is the point of buying 1.3 or 2.0 megapixel phone when the highest power of battery all of them have (except the newest panasonic models that are still not on the market)is 780 mah or 850 mah? I do not believe B.S. reviewers who claim that 902sh or samsung d500 or any other megapixel phone have a decent battery life if you want to be able to use it as a decent camera and phone at the same time. There is no possible way that with 780 or 850 or even 1000 mah battery you can take 20 or 30 photos and talk at least 2 hours on the phone at the same day when battery is fully charged! ATTENTION!: People, do not believ b/s reviewers here. WAIT untill PANASONICE SA6, SA7 AND MX 7 become available for sale if you are going specifically after a true megapixel camera phones! PANASONICE Battery power is the highest (you can check it for yourself in the panasonice phone description) 1660 mah!!! That you can call a true 2 megapixel camera and phone in one! But if you want to buy just a cool gift for someone then of course 700 mah, 800 mah, or 100 mah megapixel phones are unbeatable.

Recently picked up a European unlocked 902. There is a lot of bugs in them. The functions are very slow and some of the feature that the Japan version has is missing on Music and Video. Maybe it's software problem. I don't know but can't beat the Japan version of the V902SH. It operate flawlessly.

As you know that optical zoom is real zoom. Digital zoom is just doing some kind of smoothing in image processing. Therefore 8x digital zoom is not needed. You can just use any kind of software to zoom in instead. Oh V902 does have the photo editor. The OCR works pretty well. Outlook syn is not as good as Motorola mpx220. MP3 is limited to less than or equal to 192kbps. Cannot do photo editor with picture size more than 300KB. You can only rotate and do image processing with pix around 0.3 Mpix resolution or less.

It says it right there, 2x optical zoom! But I suggest to go with Sharp tm200 , since that one has 8x optical! Yes, I know tm200 takes about 10 seconds to open an image, comparing to instant opening on 902sh, but for a phone camera 8x optical cannot be beaten! Go Sharp, Go Panasonic, you are both the best!

Yes there is one issue and it is the battery life. You talk on the phone for about 30 min, took about 10 photos, and guess what? The battery is complitely drained. If you don't take photos then the battery life is normal- about 3.00 hours of talk time. As far as the phone quality, this phone is perfect. It has excellent reception,and sound is very clear and loud. HMMMM, by now you probably have a question of this sort: If I cannot talk enough on the phone while using the camera, then what the heck I need this phone for? HMMMMM, here is my answer to you: for $800-$1000 (these are the cheapest prices I saw on this phone, this is not a phone, but a camera. HMMMM, a rip off 2 megapixel camera? ($800?) . Or maybe oposite , if you don't use the camera then a rip off cell phone?! ($800). So no matter what way you turn it around it is just a plain rip off. MY ADVISE to you: Save your money and wait another 3 years, the prices on megapixel camera phones will become decent by that time.

I didn't ask how much music or movies you can listen or view. My question is simple: when the battery is fully charged: can you talk at least 2 hours on the phone and at the same day take at least 30 photos? In my opinion if the camera phone cannot perform this basic action without completely draining the battery life , then you better of save yourself a $700 (rediculous price) and get a simple $100 sony ericsson triband phone with additional purchase of 5 megapixel kodak camere for $240. Stick the Kodak camera to your belt and don't give yourself a headache.

i think the sony ericsson's W800 is much better than this sharp model.The W800 supporting a 2MP digital camera with autofocus up to 4X digital zoom..n the most important thing is..it's including a 512MB memory stick duo n it's expandable to 1GB.. up to 9 hours talk-time..so..i think W800 is definitely better the Nokia 6680 and this Sharp 902

The reason why I would love to get this phone is its 2 megapixel camera. But could anyone who has this phone explaint to me one simple thing: How could you take even 10 photos a day , when the battery talk time is only 3 hours? I would appreciate your answers about the battery life (when you want to take a decent # of photos a day), but please don't tell me anything about (video recording, ring tones, messaging or blue tooth), as I'm not into that type of stuff.

More a question than a comment... I've been offerred an upgrade by Vodafone and want a decent camera phone that will sync with my Mac. I've heard the Sony Ericsson s700i might - any ideas? I'm also tempted by the Sharp 902 - does anyone know if this will sync with my Mac (running OSX) I'm not worried about all the functions working but I'd ideally like to be able to download / bluetooth the the contacts from my Mac to my phone. SD card supports up to 2gb - just got a 1gb card from amazon, �60 - bargain...eventually people will work out how to encode in the same format that the phone records - by which time you'll be able to watch high quality video on your phone - therefore with a 1gb card you'd be able to watch a full film, on the go, good quality!!

Yo. I just got this phone a couple of days ago - it rocks. Great quality camera - you only get blurry pics if you don't know how to take digital photos - you have to hold your hand still while it takes the shot...it may be big if you open it up but i use the phone closed when making a call, thanks to the nifty pivot top...very clear screen, great sound, easy to use, intuitive menu and great connection quality - best phone I've ever had, only thing i'd say it's missing is a symbian based OS but I can cope....also if you buy a 1gb sd card from amazon for like �60 you can watch movies, cram loads of mp3s on and tons of pics! great phone

The 902 is an excellent phone, the video quality is excellent, and the video-ouput feature is amazing. After heavy usage my 902 has been great, no errors or faults, and the build quality is very good.

Hello, I have the vodafone europe version, in the uk. i hadn't even heard of those other formats before. i just assumed (silly me) that the so called "media player" could play such standard media as an mp3. the sony does with no problem. it even plays m4a's, strait outta itunes on a mac! another odd snafu: wanted to make a quick jpeg wallpaper of my own. tried to bluetooth it over, and got a "this device does not accpept files of this type" JPEG! - please sony, release a 3g phone of the s700's capabilities! that would be quite nice.

this seems to be the easiest to find link on this phone on google, so i'll post my experience so far here. been using this for the week now, can't say i find it at all thrilling. best feature is the video - qvga video direct to the sd card is impressive, not something i've seen anywhere else. the 2mp camera would be impressive if it wasn't for the fact that 100% of all photos i've taken with it are blurry because of the time it takes to make an exposure. lame. autofocus is slow as well. that said, the ui is average, and not my favorite. current SE ui's are much better to look at and easier to use. there are some real bad faults concerning photos and editing them in phone. you can take your beautiful large res images, but you can't edit them or scale them down ("size too large. cannot show" - crappy). what's the point of a resizing utility if the large images you want to resize can't be used by it? the font is obviously the fixed width font from the japanese version of the phone and is ugly (can you tell i'm a graphic designer?). wish there were themes, as the vodafone graphics are quite unimpressive and boring. one feature that could be promising is that you can seemingly use java screensavers. however, where are they? are there any? looks like no so far, so what good is that feature. the stereo speakers are a novelty. sounds nice if you listen looking straight at the screen, but for ringtones, you never are just holding your phone looking at the screen waiting for a call (unless you really do have nothing to do). tried copying an mp3 and an aac encoded m4a files to the sd card. neither showed up in the media player. sad, because the adaptor for headphones is actually a real minijack - meaning i could use my high-quality earphones, since my ipod suddenly decided to evaporate all the files on it (with at 512 or 1mb sd card, this could be an ipod shuffle (though obviously not near the same size!). it's said that japanese phones are somewhat difficult to use, because the japanese market takes some pride in being challenged by technology then figuring out. i don't like that, being from the west. it's a waste of my time. vodafone live is quite crap as well. wanted to look up a restauraunt's phone number. after spending 15 minutes looking for the right way to search for it, still wasn't close to finding it. would be nice if i could just enter the name of the restauraunt in a directory - seems obvious to me, but not to vodafone. streaming new clips could be decent, but the couple i tried to stream stopped before the end. lame. i'm looking to trade for the V800 in the office and use that instead. looking forward to it. there's my firsthand experience with using the phone so far. anyone find any java things to use as screensavers, please post. cheers!

for those peeps who dont believe that you can unlock japanese vodafone live phones maybe you should go to downtown van you can buy V902SH japanese model in orange white and black and they are wcdma and gsm and they are unlocked! they also have the japanese version of the V800, so far i have not seen any of the european version vodafone lives unlocked tho, but jap version is better cuz you can use it in japan because it is also WCDMA. and more color choices

Hey Just upgraded my gx20 for a 902 and i can't believe how good this phone is. I have read most of the reviews and i think that the size dont matter. Small phones used to be fasionable but not anymore, its the features that matter now and I think that shape have probably covered everything wot is on the market.

Is the 902 capable of recording (music) by itself like the V801SH? Seems like it only has a player built in. Anyway looking forward to the English manual on the Vodafone site! Japanese manual is packed with all kinds of fuctions which I can't understand all of them. The best handset yet to purchase. Receive sensitivity is good, I can keep up a conversation in the elevator while the GX32 has no signal.

No one is going to have the "good quality" V902SH from Sharp (from Japan) as an unlocked phone. All unlocked phones are made in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. and their quality is not there, cheaply made but may look the same. That's what you have to expect when you buy unlocked phones not from Vodafone.

I heard that the one you buy in Europe are unocked... But, I don't know if that's true. If it is true, I think there is alot of V902SH on eBay for sale as an "unlocked" handset. So I guess that the European Vodafone handset comes unlocked??? I doubt it!!! Maybe later, a couple months later there might be a unlocked V902SH available, but not now.

I have my 902 for over 2 weeks and so far the sound is clearer than the V801SH through the headset and the built in two stereo speaker sounds not bad for the size. What kind of problem? Is it distortion or low volume? I would like to know more in detail if you hear more about this issue. I have not receive any kind of recall from Vodafone yet (hope I don't get one...) I'll have to ship it back from Hawaii.

When sharp say they can do 384 Kbps they mean bits and not bytes... There are 8 bits to a byte so do the math, it means you can download upto 48Kbs(Kilo Bytes). It is true you can realistically only download around 40Kbs which is almost half a meg broadband since that download speed is capable of 64Kbs... hope that makes sense... I have this phone and use it to connect via a VPN to work and it works well when I'm in London with good 3G reception. thanks Geoff.

Maximum size 512? Nope, I have been using a 1gb kingston sd card for a week or so loaded with films, pictures and mp3s and it works great.

You can't get Japan made phone's (especially from Vodafone, AU, KDD, etc.) unlocked (brand like Sharp, Sanyo, NEC, etc.) You'll have to buy it in Japan and use it in Japan or else use the roaming service through the Japanese carrier where you purchased in Japan(very expensive). Otherwise good luck in finding an unlocked Japan brand phone or having them unlocked because the phones are "software" locked from the factory and you can't just punch in a number or clip a wire to unlock it.

alls you have to do in order to make mp3s work on the phone is to download a piece of software from the sony ericsson developers site. the software will encode your mp3 files with copywrite protection thus allowing them to be played on the phone. the program is called: Sony Ericsson DRM Packager v1.21

Hello Samson MP3 cannot be set as a ringtone. The only way to set a ringtone is if the content is encrypted with Forward Lock or Seperate Delivery. So in other words you have to get the content from Vodafone's Portal or you can set a ringtone which is AMR format. I know its a pain but unfortunately thats the way it is.

I'm sorry to say but: live with it! Either you just want a phone... or you want a Multimedia Phone/ SmartPhone. Ever looked at Motorola's V'range camera quality, screen quality and general QUALITY? They are smaller, try-hard multimedia phones which cannot compare to SHARP. At this stage you cannot have both: Small and Decent. Either its small...then it's a phone. Well i'm a happy chappy now. Got my 902 a few hours ago, and it's not a bad phone. I've already filled the 32mb card with music. So yeah you're right Nod, i will be buying a 1gb card. Though on the SanDisk website they talk about a 2gb SD card coming out soon. Just a thought! Also the mp3 quality is well good through the headset. Though i can't work out how to give my songs names. When i view a mp3 file in the 'sounds and ringtones' folder it shows the full track name i've given it. But when i enter 'media player' it shows the same file as 'No artist name'. This makes creating a play list hard. Now am i just being dumb! Can anyone help? Anyway, good phone, Ollie.

And one qualitied picture may takes several hundred kb. So I think you'd better get ready for it. I am going to buy the 512 or 1024 sd card, but I don't know the limit of 902. It just a advice.:)

You can get the USB data cable at any Vodafone shop in Japan, although you can use the data cable for making the phone into a modem ONLY. You cannot download/upload pictures, data's, etc. Just a warning before you buy the cable so you don't waste your money.

Ref codec for mpeg4. U would have to download a mpeg4 codec in which you can then encode the video from your phone. Try typing in mpeg 4 codec in a search engine

From my memory of my GX20, the T9 dictionary did learn words if you deactivated T9 the first time you spell the word, then turn it on once the word is finished and before you have put a space in. Does someone want to try this and see if it works? Also WRT the DRM needed for MP3 ring tones, you can get some software from the SE website that adds it to whatever MP3 file you like..

Hi Venenosa, it is a little more clumsy than I expected. My friends call it "phone booth" but ok, they could be envious ;-) What came to my attention is that the surface can be scratched easily, so treat it more like a digicam than a phone. Regards DS BTW. Hi, I got mine a few days ago and am a little disappointed. Pictures are only sharp if the phone is fixed to a static position. Looks like the exposure time is extremely long and the LED flash weak. This devaluates 2MP and autofocus. I will get my mobile checked soon. T9 is not learning new words, alarm is not working when the phone is off but the calendar has a reminder funtcion. The PC Sync is made with the outdated mobile action handset manager which often hangs and has no real sync with outlook. I did not manage to install any java progs except vodafone load-a-game. Hi Jamie i've got some questions about the phone if you don't mind. I was wondering if sharp have sorted the problems they had with the GX-20, (phone i've got). Problems like; * The calender having no alarm. So you have no reminder of the date you've set. * The phone not being able to remember new words when creating text messages. You have to re-type them each time. * Also the alarm only works if you leave the phone swithed on. Thanks for any help you can give. i think i might get one soon too. Hello Jamie Well you could try and see whether the MPEG files you have, can be played by the terminal. You can store the MPEG files on the 32 MB SD Memory Card that you get with the Sharp and give it a shot.Be interesting to know whether it works.

Yo stefan ive jus checked out that link that u mentioned. On there it says February 2005, but i think they talking about when it comes available online. Also when u click on the 'Tell me when the Sharp 902 is available' link it says that dates are provisional and are subject to change. So don't read too much into that. I was definately told it would be out Christmas Eve. Don't know what other shops have said but the vodaphone i went to told me that. Also she said that tariff prices are probably going to be slightly higher than for the Sony Ericsson V800.

Like any vodafone V801SH, V801SA, V802, etc. is strictly software locked and is impossible to unlock to use with other SIM card other than that of Vodafone USIM card.

GX30 is not a replacement of the Sharp 902!!! There is a great difference in the quality of the 902 and GX30. You can't compare the quality of the 902 to the GX30. 902 is much better in quality, design, etc. than the GX30. GX30 is made for the GSM (US) market because the 902 can't be used in the US, unless you are under Vodafone roaming network and pay a fortune in phone bill. You won't be able to use the 902 in the US without the Vodafone USIM card. It is a software LOCKED phone and cannot be used with other SIM cards. It is exclusive to Vodafone Japan and maybe Europe in the future.

The older V801SH from Sharp (Vodafone), records in 30 minute segment, with a blandk 256MB SD card, a total time of 426 minutes is available. I hope the new 902 will give you as long as 30 minutes or more.

And...the K700 is only 3 mm shorter in height, 4 mm in length and something 7 mm in width. But you cannot compare the K700 to the 902. This is a flip-phone. Look at the keys on the K700 and the smaller screen. It's much more comfortable (to me) to have a flip-phone with a decent keyboard and a nice screen than a krammed and compact bar-phone.

SIZE Ok, so I think you guys need to make up your minds. I wouldn't consider this phone "big". 10 cm's for a phone like THIS is a decent size and fits well into the palm. Good buttons, huge screen...if you want quality then you gotta accept this size. I mean, how much smaller can it be with a 320x240 px screen? And the camera and stuff need some space too. Compared to other UMTS phones, this one does well. If you want small phones, then just go for regular GSM phones like Samsung makes them. 128x160 screen etc. etc....but for this UMTS high-end phone don't expect much smaller.

902 and 802 will be available in Japan pretty soon around end of November or beginning of December. Remember it is a "locked" phone and you cannot take it outside Japan and use it unless you are using Vodafone roaming service (which is expensive). It states UMTS/GSM900/1800/1900, but only available through Vodafone and will accept ONLY Vodafone USIM card.

Ok, the SHARP 902, 802, GX30 etc. are all EXCLUSIVE to Vodafone. The 902 & 802 to Vodafone UMTS. So unless Vodafone has set-up a Vodafone UMTS network or agreement with a local provider in your country you will not be able to get the phones. They will be locked to Vodafone UMTS (also work on Vodafone GSM) and only operate on a Vodafone USIM. So far the phones will be introduced to Europe (UK, Germany, Switzerland etc.) and Japan. I'm not aware of which other countries have a current Vodafone UMTS network. The phone will not be Available to Australia for now, but I'm still hoping that Vodafone & Optus get their act together and hurry up.

Hey there, well, the other day I tested Kuni's Sanyo again...and of course, the software isn't Red/White. It's pretty shmick..., but still, The Vodafone start-up, Vodafone-Live! Symbols tell me that Vodafone had it's fingers in there. And I know, you're not denying that. But Sanyo's own software is of no better use than Vodafones...it just looks better. But you're right, that's a bit off the topic here. So, I haven't found any new updates on what's happening with the 902. Only know its due in Europe this Month (November actually). Australia will have to wait a bit longer though... Optus and Vodafone are working together to get their network up and running. They should be finished by the end of 2005 (!!), so until then the 902 is totally outdated anyways. So unless you can unlock the European/Japanese Versions to work with a normal SIM-Card...you'll have to wait a bit longer.

the software is (in case of your Sanyo V801SA) of Sanyo itself. It only is locked by vodafone and has some other restrictions applied to it. I happen to own a GX30 on Vodafone software and have connections in Korea, to. And let me tell you this, THEY DON'T COMPARE! A typical korean Samsung/LG just can't compare to just about any DoCoMo/KDDI/Vodafone i can think of. screen/software/features/hardware etc.. etc... My GX30 would actually be a match for an typical korean Samsung phone. They may be in front of Japan in cameras, but knowing NTT DoCoMo that won't last very long...

Yep, I'm a University Student. Funny enough, my roommate is Japanese with a JAPANESE VODAFONE mobile (Sanyo V801SA). The Software on it IS Vodafone and the locks and restrictions are...VODAFONE. I've tested it, I've seen the QVGA 262k etc. etc. I've got Korean friends....silly enough most of them brought their CYON and Anycall phones...They didn't know that they wouldn't work here. So what do I do? I play with them. To me there isn't really too much difference between all the NEC's, CYON or Samsung. They are phones with above average specs compared to any GSM. It's just amazing how Korea and Japan are racing in the market. For your interests: I'm from Germany, so I know probably many more carriers, even different Vodafone branches (Vodafone-D2, Vodafone Pacific, etc. etc.) I've lived in the states and have used Sprint and ATT. Now some put their own software on it and some don't. In Germany, Vodafone and T-Mobile are the only ones. But that's because they also get some exclusive handsets (GX20/30 etc.). All the UMTS devices are Vodafone branded (including Software). I own a GX20 with Vodafone software, on the Vodafone Network. So don't tell me I know nothing about them. I'm not an engineer, but I can tell you quite a bit about them. Oh...and about the Optical Zoom. The new Samsung does have Optical...read the reviews. Let's not go there with screen resolution and size. CGS vs. TFT have been discussed throroughly in here. And I know that if a 2.2 inch TFT with 176 x 220 px, and a CGS (for example) 2.2 inch with 320 x 240 px must have different spacing and size of pixels. Vodafone is still a rip off, and you wanna know why they brand their phones? I don't need to tell you, do i?

I also bet that you haven't seen a Sharp QVGA 262K screen in real life before... then you would know why they have such a good reputation And i can't detect any form of optical zoom in the samsung...

Since Samsung has just released it's 5 MPx phone, they have outdone the Japanese at this stage. LG and Anycall make good phones, I've held them...and you can't fit a 320x240 px screen into a phone that is only 8cm tall and 4cm wide. Not sure how big the new LG is though. When it comes to Software....All Vodafone Models have Vodafone...so its a piece of crap software.

to skater42, Actually Japan's AU KDDI's Casio A5406CA already has a 3.2MP sensor. And where did you get the idea that Samsung and LG are more advanced than NEC or Sharp? They may have better camera quality (for now at least), but if you look more closely at their phones NEC and Sharp are still WAY ahead of them. For instance the LG 3.24MP phone only has a 176x220 pixels display but even the european Sharp GX30 or NEC n410i have 240x320 pixel displays. Japanese phones are also much better when it comes to software. Did i mention Bluetooth?

@Mark LV: you are comparing Apples and Oranges here. First of all, it's not theoretically possible, its Reality. The new 5MPx Samsung, released next week, features True Color, Camera, Mp3 player and much more. But this is all computer technology...nothing new. Just more compact. And would you rather carry around a Laptop that weighs 2 KG? Think of it this way, if you need to carry three devices, where will you store them? How many pockets can you have? And a MP3 player, Phone and PDA together will weigh just as much as one SINGLE hi-tech mobile phone. The price...yes. It is high. But wait for 4-6 Months and it will have reduced 1/3 of the original. If you buy from ebay it's cheaper anyways (I don't know anyone who's bought a $900 phone from a phoneshop). But then again, would you come cheaper buying an MP3 player, Camera and Phone? By the way, how is one being lazy? Are you still referring to mobile phones as initially argued? This has nothing to do with being lazy, but rather smart. Lazy is when I drive my car to the mailbox, which is 50 m away from the garage. Lot's of people who have an attitude like you are either jealous (cuz THEY don't have it), or just don't use the features that new mobiles incorporate. Like the older generation (to be very general). My father has the same opinion like you. This is not personally aimed at you, please don't be offended. Just try a PDA-Phone from your friends and see how handy it can be ;)

Another point to bear in mind is that although it is theoretically possible to have multi-function devices, there is a price to pay. The cost of such a device would be VERY high, and the size and weight will be hefty as well. It's a great idea for the lazy, but in all fairness it's impractical. I mean do you have a device at home which can allow you to watch TV, act as a washing machine and also be a gas cooker? Absurd!

@ Shinjiro, Uhm...I wasn't arguing against the point of having 3-in-1 but for it... I do believe however that a Mobile Phone camera compared to a QUALITY digital camera cannot be as good. This will hopefully change in the future though. And remember...the megapixels are only the SIZE of a picture, not the quality. My old 2MPx Digicam had a good sized picture...but the quality sucked. Too dark, too blury. My Sharp 0.3 Mpx Camera kicks butt compared to it. But then I have to say, my Digital Camera was a cheap brand. Do you understand where I'm getting at?

Where do you get the idea that Japan is more advanced? I haven't seen a 3.24 MPx camera in the Japanese market yet, NTT DOCOMO and Vodafone so far have made it to 2-2.5 MPx. Anycall and LG have both released 3.24 MPx cameras already, but Japan? Now Samsung (Anycall) and LG (CYON), in my opinion, are technology wise way ahead of Vodafones NEC and SHARP models. This is for the CDMA market, of course!!!

Vodafone's 3g network has a global standard. The Sharp 902 will be available on all European Vodafone networks and the 902sh will be available on Vodafone in Japan. I'm guessing the 902 will also become available on Vodafone Australia and any other Vodafone network.

good point on getting separate units rather than getting all-in-one, but you won't believe the quality of the 4 megapixel phone that came out in Japan! When you take the memory card to have it developed, the picture looks better than a stand alone digital camera! Reception of the phone is excellent and it's really handy not to carry two items when one can do it all.

@ Mark LV: While I'm not arguing the point that the quality of a digital camera is better I must say that Sharp phones come pretty close. If you can afford a good phone and a good camera and a good MP3 player...then buy those three. I prefer having a phone that can have 3-in-1. They will get better over the time...(Korea already has 3.24 MPx in their phones) and the bit-rate in the MP3 players in mobiles will go up too. Phone + Internet + MP3 + Camera + USB Storage + Organizer = Sounds pretty good to me. Many phones in Japan and Korea now have optical zoom and the same settings for light and dark environments...after all it's a digital camera, only. If you really want good Prints then buy a SLR with a Provia or Velvia Fuji Slide Film....that beats Digital by miles ;)

Why don't some people get it through their thick, stupid heads that cameras on mobile phones are simply no match for REAL digital cameras? The lens on a camera phone is TOO DAMN SMALL to produce high quality pictures. And you can never have the flexibility and manual features you have on a real camera. BUY A PHONE FOR ITS QUALITY AND OVERALL FEATURES, NOT JUST FOR THE DIGICAM!!

Japan is on -CDMA2000 x1 (3G AU KDDI) -FOMA (3G Docomo) -PDC (2G Docomo AND 2G Vodafone) -PHS (2G Tu-Ka) -WCDMA (3G Vodafone) Europe is on - GSM (2G Orange Vodafone KPN etc...) - WCDMA (3G 3, KPN, Vodafone) Vodafone Japans WCDMA band is the same as Europes band so the phone works in Europe as well as in Japan

No, I'm not stupid, just less informed than you. I only knew of the CDMA2000 and 1X Standard in Japan. Should have known that Vodafone uses WCDMA there. Thanx for the resources anyways. That with the USIM-Card is weird. Because most WCDMA Handsets we have in Australia (Hutchinson 3 Network) take either "3" USIM or standard GSM SIM cards. I guess it's all politics. I'm wondering if Vodafone will reprogram their 902 and 802 for Vodafone UMTS in Germany? Does anyone know about that?

I think it's great!!! Why? Well, first of all the specs are superb. I mean, 2 Megapixels is nothing new in Japan or Korea, for the Western Market it is though. You cannot compare this phone with Nokia, the best UMTS phone Nokia has to offer is bulky and just weird (7600 and doesn't even make video calls). This phone has all the features that one could want. MP3, 2MP camera with the usual SHARP quality, huge in-built memory (NEC is better with 32 or 64 MB) and so much more. Vodafone will introduce it's UMTS network in Australia in 2005, and if you absolutely need to use it anywhere else then just unlock it. Well, this phone wouldn't work in Japan because it's WCDMA. Japan uses CDMA2000 and CDMA 1x. But they've got similar and better models anyways, they wouldn't envy this one. Just check out the DOCOMO web site.

SO the cameras a 2.0 megapixel, how come it wont produce gr8 photos or videos then? sounds odd 2 me since i own a gx30 and the photo quality is v.gd already an it only has a 1mp camera.

The 2MP unit that the 902 is based on does not produce fantastic photo's. (Serious distortion around the corners.) Probably due to the optical zoom.......

801sh/sa, 902, 802 are all SOFTWARE LOCKED! You can't use it with other SIM card other than Vodafone's USIM card. It's only made to be used in Japan adn Europe where there is Vodafone service.
