Sharp Aquos R2 compact - User Reviews

  • 102hz with 2500mah lmaooo

  • Hi, You should find it quite easely on apk mirror with the references I gave you ;)

  • Hi! Can you give link for gcam which works?

  • I purchased one of these and use it on T-Mobile in the US. In urban and suburban areas I am able to get 4G LTE, but elsewhere connectivity is almost impossible, and regular phone call quality suffers. Other than connectivity, though, it's amazing. This is probably the most up-to-date "small" form factor phone you can get. The display is stunning and the camera takes great HDR photos.

  • We can try.. but as far as I read Samsung did not allow Sharp to sell internationally because they want to build Samsung brand name in Europe and America. Samsung has a controlling number of shares of Sharp.

  • First of all, I don't own this phone. I own a Sony Xperia X Compact. Sony is my go to brand for when it comes to phones because they create the best compact phones. Then I stumbled across this Sharp and I am super impressed. These days all the phones are so big they can hardly fit in your pocket. I NEED THIS PHONE

  • shall we petition Sharp to release this internationally?

  • There's an app called silent mode. No problem here muting it without root

  • Wish this phone was in the USA. So hard to find a decent sized phone around here.

  • Just bought it from Japan on ebay. Even the seller said I would have to find some paid app to do it. If you can root, go ahead.

  • Hey guys, here are my first impressions: Bought from ebay and I received the SH-M09 or as others have stated "SIM-free". It has a SIM slot though, so I'm not sure what SIM-free means. Just like most of you guys coming from the Sony xz1c or xz2c, I wanted this phone for the size. I was amazed though at the screen-to-body ratio. Smaller than Google Pixel with same screen size but same physical size of xz1c. That being said, the battery does seem to charge slow and drain quickly. My biggest gripe is the lack of turning off the camera shutter sound!!! Japan has some anti-pervert law that forces phones to have the sound on. There seems to be a few paid apps that can turn it off. The only other option, which I am considering, is to root the phone. Or I'm also considering selling it instead and just buying a Samsung S10e. The biggest shock to me on the Sharp Aquos r2c was the screen-to-body ratio, and since I was satisfied with the Pixel size, I might as well make the jump towards the big screen of s10e. Bought this phone for $750. Amazon US has it listed for $980 (from Sharp). And the S10e $460 right now. Seems like I make a huge mistake.

  • Considering buying this phone from Japan into Europe. I'm worried about the always on camera shutter sound required in Japanese phones. Can anyone that is using this phone in Europe (bought in japan) say if their camera sound is always on or if it can be silenced? Thanks!

  • To restore the Mobile Data Quick Settings Toggles on Sharp R2 Compact, I've used the following article : But the "MobileData" setting doesn't work. Fortunately I found the correct name for this Sharp phone on Japanese forums : "cell" So for me this was the command I used : adb shell settings get secure sysui_qs_tiles settings put secure sysui_qs_tiles "airplane, cell, wifi, flashlight, battery, rotation, night, cast, glove" Please note that the added mobile data quick setting will disapear if you edit the quick settings using the native phone menu. I've tried to launch like hundred version of the Google Camera, I found only two versions that works on my phone (found on apkmirror) : v5.1.018 v4.4.020 If you find a newer version with HDR+ on it please share ! (you can find a lot of ports here : At did check severals nights regarding the battery drop, and it's always

  • Thank's, I was thinking of doing exactly this. Spent £15 on a new battery for my xz1c instead (pretty easy to change) Now going strong all day again.

  • Thank's, I was thinking of doing exactly this. Spent £15 on a new battery for my xz1c instead (pretty easy to change) Now going strong all day again.

  • Couple of questions: How did u manage to install the mobile data quick setting?! And which Google camera apk u got installed? Do u notice battery drain over 10% during night in flight mode? Thanks in advance!

  • I've been using this phone for a month, bought on ZenMarket to France. I really love it, it's definitely the perfect phone for me. Size is perfect, it's very powerful (coming from a A3 2017). I managed to install Google Camera and to add the mobile data quick setting (not without struggle), now it feels perfect. Battery life is correct.

  • Phone is under-powered. Bought as a replacement for Sony XZ1 Compact, but it does't stand up to the XZ1 in terms of responsiveness or battery life.

  • Sharp cannot release competitive lines outside of Japan where Samsung intends to be the market leader. Samsung bought a controlling share over Sharp.

  • Hi , I buy it from Jauce ( site from Japan ) , he make shipping international .

  • Hey friend, where did you buy it from and ship to? This is still expensive phone.

  • Today i receive it . I pay Custom fees .. But it's very nice and good compact phone , i like it very much ! Haptic feedback it's incredible , nice work Sharp ! Battery very good . I have Sony xz1 Compact . This Sharp R2 Compact it's more good than Sony . Very good phone .

  • Will this phone work with any of the Indian mobile carriers?

  • It seems they do not know what they are doing. They've made a phone that many dream about. Relatively small dimensions with a large screen, powerful enough, and then keep it out of the market. Many people, because of such a market situation, are simply forced to buy bulky devices, and in reality they would like to buy something like this.

  • Such a shame that this wonderful phone is stupidly crippled: 1. Not available ouside Japan 2. No B20 800 4G band 3. No B8 900 3G band 4. Weedy battery 5. Older Gorilla Glass 3 I could live with all of that apart from the missing 4G and 3G bands as it reduces the places the phone can be used :(

  • Happy to help. You're welcome!

  • Via zenmarket. Flightmode just fine when u turn off synch btw. Very happy with the device, especially the handset feeling compared to xz2 compact.

  • Thank you for your description , after that , i buy one from Zenmarket ! Thanks !

  • Where did u get this phone....

  • Battery drain about 10% over night (9 hours). Flightmode on though. Anyone else noticed this?

  • Looks awesome where to buy comrades? :O

  • Yes it does (through my day though)

  • Ordered mine from via zenmarket (thanks for the tipp btw). I had to pay important fee (115 euro) which hurt me a lot, but the smartphone itself cost 57k yen (Yahoo auction), which is a affordable price for me. Destination is Germany. And what should I say? I'm loving it. Coming from the compact series of the xperias the Sharp feels more compact as the xz2 compact. The thickness bothered me the most, this one feels light and smooth in my hand. Dimensions are near perfect, no useless frames on the beautiful screen finally. Screen is awesome, but less bright than the xz2c (which doesn't bother me at all). It's a beautiful phone which feels nice in my hand and is way less slippier than the xz2c. It's my first notch-phone but surprisingly the notches are barely noticeable (for me). Coming from the xz2c only downside for me is the mono sound. It's a bit quieter than the xz2 and not stereo. But that's it. Battery brings me through my day easily so no complains about that. Very nice phone I'm quite happy.

  • Please tell us , have QI wireless charging ? Thanks .

  • I wanted to know abt the battery of this phone. Does it gets you complete a day

  • Couldn't find it there frankly, it doesn't seem to list R2 compact at all.

  • Which LTE brands does the international version support? I couldn't find it anywhere.

  • Nice little smartphone. Dimensions are perfect and the notches don't bother me even though I thought they would. The Aquos take on Android doesn't support multiple users for some reason. That was a pretty big disappointment.

  • You can easily buy this phone using services like a Zenmarket (Google it) There is a two versions on a Japanese Yahoo auctions: one is officially unlocked operators phone (SoftBank operator p/products/aquos-r2-compact/index.html) and a second is intentional a sim-free version (sh-m09 model p/products/shm09/index.html). The difference between two is only a color variants and additional operator a specific applications.

  • I'm about to get one as well, can u tell me a bit more about the performance/downside/batterylife etc.? Thanks in advance!

  • Hi, Could someone who has this phone check what level of Camera 2 API it supports ? (legacy, limited, full, level 3) And also if it supports RAW format photos ? (RAW capture) The above can be checked on the phone with the app "Camera2 API Probe" (free on PlayStore). Thanks.

  • Is this available in the USA? Having a hard time finding a small phone out here.

  • Is there any possibility to import this phone to Germany?

  • Hi guys. I'm interested if people could tell me about the camera data rate and performance? The 845 chipset supports 4k 50fps. I'm interested in putting together a little camera rig, and there is no modern compact phone with this sort of power. What's is the maximum data rate you can use at 4k 25/30/50/60fps? (File size divided by seconds of length). Advanced camera software like open camera can sometimes unlock more advanced modes lime this (but you have to check the actual data rate, resolution and frames per second in viewing software file information feature, as open camera will still tell you you are doing it when it can't). Does it support 25/50 fps 4k/uhd? How is it in very low light? Anybody know which sensor or dynamic range it has? Thanks for anybody who can help.

  • FYI, Mine is model number SH-M09, which seems to be the "unlocked" version.

  • I bought one from Amazon Japan. It took 2 weeks to arrive and I had to pay import duties, but it's worth it. Double check that it supports the 4G bands you get your service on. For me it's the perfect phone. I'm coming fron an XZ1 Compact, which has too little on board storage and no OIS. The Sharp's design makes it feel even smaller and thinner. I have yet to test the camera. The app is a little clunky and slow, but image quality seems solid. I'm OK with the battery, it does get me through a typical day and I have plenty of opportunities to top it up during the day if needed.

  • These are comparable in a universe of COMPACT size (13.5x7), and obviously not in a universe of top-notch specs and $$$ pricetag.-

  • If this had a larger battery I would probably try to import one to Canada.

  • >only 131mm tall >IP68 rating >aluminium/plastic design so it doesn't crack like glass >Plenty of performance >Apparently a solid camera Damn this phone is like a dream... But then you wake up and realize it's only being sold in Japan. Damn shame.

  • unfortunately no. i heard its only released in japan

  • is this phone available worldwide?

  • Where did I say I wasn't satisfied with battery? My point is that you can have 4000mah battery with normal dimensions phone..

  • 2500mah, really ? How can they do such a mistake in 2019 ??

  • Redmi 4X has arguably poor battery life because of poor optimization back then. If redmi 4x was made today, it's 4000 mah would last a lot longer. Optimization, dude. Nowadays it means a lot.

  • Where i can get this phone? Does it support 4G network in Pakistan because its specs does not mention any frequency band. I like this phone because its compact.

  • In what universe is either of those “comparisons” even valid for someone who wants to stay up to date with Android? How are those specs even considered comparable?

  • yeah? i had xiaomi redmi 4x, and he had 4000mah battery and It wasn't huugeee

  • Looking for this phone at Japanese internet trade services. Some offers there have a note "domestic version" and they don't guarantee that the phone will be working overseas. I've also figured out that there were two slightly different marking of the sim-free r2 compact. But I haven't understood this connection ultimately. So I'm wondering could you tell the exact marking of your one, whether it's just SH-M09 or SH-M09X5B or W up to the color (specified at the side bottom part of the box cover). Thanks

  • Ive recently been to Tokyo and got myself one for around 600USD. The phone works well in Israel and I have full 4G/3G reception, all I had to do is add my provider's APN as they dont offer it natively for this device (and I doubt anyone else outside Japan does). Regardless, the phone size is perfect. the screen is amazing, it feels snappier than an iPhone and is by far the most agile Android I had a chance of holding, aside from the perfect screen and size, the performance of the snapdragon are crisp and the camera is not too bad either, Only downside is the fact it does not offer wireless charging which is a let down.

  • Speaking of "modern" compact phones (EU version), it's only 3 models available: * Sharp EUR 550 * Sony XZ2 compact EUR 450 * Samsung A3 2017 EUR 220 I'm not sure what from Sharp's spec justifies +100 EUR comparing to Sony. Also, if all you need is compact size and can tolerate performance/camera, then Samsung still beats both of them IMHO:) Comparison: Search for compacts:

  • Where can I buy this phone in the UK?

  • What's the difference between the two models?

  • Currently $895 USD on kyoex.

  • Price SM-H09: 69,800 Yen ~ 550Euro There goes the only device I was really interested in buying for three years...

  • unfortunately. and i also searched for nokia 8 sirocco as that ome is almost compact too but too pricey and another thing is that i really need microsd slot on my phone

  • Ooo I hope we can eventually get this in UK. It'd surely be a huge seller. So many people are looking for a properly compact Android phone. Come on Sharp.

  • 2500mah with SD 845 and 120hz is a really bad combination. I have a good feeling this phone's battery sucks. Also what's the deal with that bottom notch? It's as if sharp painted the Mona Lisa then decided to give her a mustache.

  • For info, Sharp has now officially announced a SIM free version of this phone (model SH-M09), available on February 21. It is already available for pre-order in several Japan stores. Until now only the Softbank version was available (model 803SH).

  • The perfect smartphone (size and specifications) except for the price and the fact that, you can not order it from many countries. Why are not there more compact smartphones for android o.s? I only know this model and sony's compact smartphones (for me compact phone is

  • a large RAM could not accommodate, it is sad

  • Only in Japan I think. You can order from kyoex.com, but note that they only sell premium model, very expensive, and it looks slightly different.

  • Back camera placement hurts the phone's aesthetics so much. I wish they'd redesign this and release globally. Good Android phones nowadays are too big for pockets and hands.

  • Is it available in europe? If not in which countries is it available?

  • The only comparable in size phone is the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact which is larger in every dimension. It also has 2.8 mm more thickness. It has a 2870 mAh battery and it was released 2018, April. You are overestimating how much increasing just one dimension of the phone adds volume for the battery.

  • It was announced to released 1.18 for ~80,000 yen.

  • If it was 1mm thicker it could have a considerably larger battery and still be pocket friendly.

  • Fitting a 4000 mAh in the phone of this size would be impossible. Heck even a 3000 mAh would be hard with the current level of battery technology. If you want a smaller phone you can't expect a huge battery.

  • Go search on eBay for Sharp Aquos R compact and you will be scared with the price lol.

  • Perfect iPhone SE replacement. The less screen and battery, the less capacity to distract you throughout the day, while still having top quality internals and a headphone jack!!!

  • Yes compact phone hope less expensive price

  • except battery, which I take as trade off, its perfect for me, because of size and weight, comparing to others current.

  • thats a premium phone for a premium price. this definitely is a lot cheaper to build that the sony. i think this will be around $200 to $250.

  • I usually hate notch But I don't know why I love it's double notch and compact size

  • Gsmarena. Can you do a review on this phone? Battery and etc? Two notches just scares me. And making a home button without back and task buttons is just stupid in my opinion but hey only compact on the market with flagship specs.

  • yes, make the 5'' screens full display models with slight bezels around so that it wont xrack at a small bump

  • 100 opins :)

  • Exactly. There are several other model with almost same specifications, not launced in India. Manufacturers have an impression that small smartphones will not have market in here. But I am very sure that such small smartphones with such good specs, will get good market in India as there are many customers here who want mobiles with good specs, yet small in size.

  • For such a small phone with an IZGO screen, it should be plenty.

  • only complain is battery, else its a perfect phone.

  • It's very nice compact phone I hope it will be released globally specially in the middle east and india

  • Will definitely buy if it comes with a bigger battery and is released in the US. Finally more compact options...

  • Anything over 5" is already the standard size. 5" isn't bad but if this phone is too big for you, get a flip phone........ I don't see how this phone is too big

  • still a bit too big, 120x60mm 5" screen would be better, like the S4 mini

  • I want this! please, sharp, make it a global release... Sony no longer sells any smartphones in my area. They packed their bags and left for some reason.

  • I want buy it, but need unlocked for Russia.

  • Hallelujah... a company actually releasing a true "compact" android phone, rather than the endless 6"+ sheep. My Samsung A3 2015 is really on it's last legs! Glad to see there's loads of other likeminded people out there who want a handy compact phone.

  • If it's gonna be cheaper than Sony XZ2 Compact I'll take it.

  • i will buy if they release it unlocked or if release worldwide.

  • This is the size that Sony XZ's Compact should be, but Sony is instead increasing the size.

  • any idea if this would work on USA LTE/5G bands? would love to import this

  • If battery was better I would buy

  • i completely agree! i hope this comes to Europe also

  • Luckily Sharp joined Sony in developing powerful compact devices. It gives a little bit of hope against the Lazy manufactures pushing customers only to get good devices with less portable ones. I am tired of knowing that to get a top performance device, you should resign yourself in almost using an anoying tablet around your ear or in your pocket.

  • Very good body size! Just battery should be 4000mAh and I would buy. Hope, next time make phone worth to buy.

  • quad notch xd

  • it will be release in Indonesia?

  • I said it once and I said it again, would have prefer a phone with bezel on it than awful notches up and down. horrible

  • Nice mobile but small battery is minus point and indisplay finger print scanner very good

  • Yo dawg, I heard you like a notch, so we give you two notch. need more notch? just wait next phones.

  • At 2500 mAh, the battery is way too small, 3000 at least. Just saying, but 131 mm long is nice.

  • another rival to sony xz2 compact. despite its disgusting display (how they look) i love the size compared to that sony xz2 compact, the 3.5 mm jack headphone, nfc....

  • This is so good but sadly not available in India.

  • the size of this phone is ideal to me. 6gb/8gb RAM and i would pay top dollar for such device. smaller screen != low-end

  • Clever? Are you f serious?

  • It s small i want it, no question ask.

  • The point of shrinking bezels is to improve the design... why ruin it again by adding two asymmetric notches..?

  • Putting the sensor on the back would make the phone thicker or the battery smaller. Overall, it's a very clever design.

  • 2 notches on a single phone, this is crazy!

  • This phone has taken over Pixel 3 XL 1st place as the ugliest phone on the planet.

  • I hope you're being Sarcastic.

  • What a lovely looking small phone! Would be even better if upper notch was symmetrical to bottom one. I hope in two years, when I'll be buying a new phone, more device like this will be available.

  • All cons aside.. I appreciate the compact size, SDM845, and 3.5mm jack in one package. Hopefully they'll consider releasing it in Indonesia too.. #CrossingFingers

  • sharp is ridiculous the snap 845 with this phone!!! bull sheet phone !!!

  • But with double the useless notch.

  • Nice and small but battery is also too small and the back camera looks really bad.

  • Very nice phone for one hand use, 5.2 inch is compact and easy to carry. Waterproofing is very good. This is would be better if the finger print sensor was in the back of the phone and larger battery upto 3000 mah. This is without useless bezels.

  • this is what I am after it ticks all boxes and is compact which is what I am after. Hope they release it to west.

  • Love the size of the screen, but not sure with the battery.

  • So good to finally see a compact high end phone again! Shame the battery is a bit small though!

  • quite good phone actually (the back phone design is pretty simple for me which is good for me), if only they remove notch and add bezel upper and down screen for stereo speaker like pixel 3 (they can place side-mounted fingerprint reader), also make battery can be removeable with polycarbonated or kevlar back (dont care about water proff/resist), and bigger battery like 2800/3000mah

  • Nobody cared about the Essential phone, companies started doing it after Apple did it, doesn't matter if the PH-1 was the first phone with a notch.

  • Sharp Aquos S2 was the first phone to have a notch

  • UD fingerprint scanner will do...

  • This is the perfect size for a phone, all the big brand out there should provide the phone with this size. The specification and the size make the notch a little bit "forgiven". Unfortunatelly this phone just for Japan only. Hope they can launch it globally......someday.

  • battery is too much low with other configuration

  • actually that kind of notch by Essential Phone then everybody started to copy it. not apple

  • I love the size of this Phone. I see no reason for Adding theese ugly notches. Above 9mm thickness seems too much and bulky.

  • 9mm is what Sony should have done with the XZ2 Compact instead of the somewhat "thick" 12mm curved back. And yes, Sharp really nails it. This R2 Compact is 4mm shorter than the XZ2 Compact while boasting bigger 5.2" display (regardless of the notches). So yeah, no matter if some people "insist" this is not a compact phone, at least it's still more "compact" than the XZ2C.

  • I love the size of this Phone. I see no reason for Adding theese ugly notches. Above 9mm thickness seems too much and bulky.

  • Just waiting for Google or Apple to make a size like this, these dimensions is exactly what I want from the big brands...

  • ...2500mAh on 5.2" FHD is a big mistake!

  • Dimensions are fine, but ugly notches are a dealbreaker. Whatta shame. Damn you, Apple!

  • Battery is fine for that size. It's 131x64. Excellent size. Specifications has some errors. If it has PD 2.0, then it's USB 3.1. PD 2.0 is a part of USB 3.1 specification.

  • Hmm, what do you think? Is it worth-it? Battery is kinda frustrating.

  • Don't worry, because it uses IGZO screen, not OLED, or something else. That is really power efficient.

  • 5,2 inch in such small body? Intriguing. Double notch seems kinda meh but im very pleased that compact smartphones are still a thing.

  • xz1c had 720p screen too. That 1080p+ screen with 120Hz is eating battery more then 720p screen for sure.

  • its a quite strange phone with that battery capacity

  • I haven't seen a Sharp phone since one of the flip phones that my cousin owned for a while back. This is actually a nice phone. It may not have the best screen resolution and the greatest battery. But, I actually like this design because it's like the Japanese version of Google's Pixel. This does look pretty comfortable if holding onto it.

  • Usable screen space is same like on Sony Compact. That Sharp 0.2 inch bigger goes under the sides of the notch that is totally unusable waste of screen

  • The one major flaw from what we've seen so far, imo. But the XZ1c had similarly low battery capacity and yet still yielded the best battery life of most phones in recent years. Let's wait for the tests.

  • Strange phone and strange battery. Back of the hone is really creepy.

  • This phone seems really good if you ask me - a 120 Hz display would be really nice to have and it has a headphone jack. Not a huge fan of the dual-notch, but I do like having a front fingerprint reader. I just wish the battery wad a decent size or, better yet, removable.

  • A dual camera and a non-plactic back cover could have made it more impressive. I really like phones that I can use single-handedly.

  • You obviously didn't realize how small this phone is. 2019 can't change the rules of physics.

  • 2500 mah battery? Its almost 2019 lol.

  • Worst design ever

  • I think it's a really beautiful phone, especially the black one

  • A compact phone in 2018 with a flagship processor AND a headphone jack AND OIS. I must be dreaming. Sony might have given up on Compact phones but Sharp would have likely killed whatever they came out with anyway. Wow.

  • So what is in the areas on the left and right of the bottom notch? You can't put navigation buttons, since the middle one has to be above the notch, so what's that space for? This has to be the most ridiculous design, worse than Apple's ultra-wide notch or Google's stupid tall notch. Well, I'm waiting for the side notches too, I'm sure someone's on it right now.

  • double notch but still a thick chin? well, actually I want a double notch phone where the upper side & the lower side are symmetrical but also has really thin bezels sorry Sharp, I just don't like this phone's design

  • oh my...show me any app/homepage/ebook/video that uses 1 or 2 notches and I will buy into this design.

  • So basically it's something that is a rival for Sony compact phones as they are flagship specs too. But i dont get why have Sharp in news where there are loads of other brands that sell there phones globally and never talked in here. While this Sharp is only for Japan market

  • I agree for that,we need more compact phones

  • battery is too much low with other configuration

  • The back looks like a pixel 2

  • but the sharp is a smaller phone by dimensions while having a bigger screen

  • im very exiting with compact android phones. i cant find a prober one, please make more models

  • Would like to see this compact trend spread to other manufacturers! And it was a good solution for the fingerprintreader.

  • It looks like google pixel 3 upside down

  • No they don t have any idea, because it is not ugly. It's kinda looking good hey.... and FP Reader... nice.. Sharp sharp!!!

  • I have made a concept phone design like this and it's good to see something similar to my design roll out to the public even thought I made this style before never knew sharp would di this but Damn they did good

  • XZ2 Compact has 2870 mAh by 5" screen.

  • waiting for all around notches, crocodile like zigzag notches and other fugking things

  • Because it's compact like your favorite Sony Xperia XZ series of Compact phones duh! Be glad it has a Headphone jack and a front fingerprint scanner.

  • 2500 mAh, why?!

  • Be as it may I prefer the old 16:9 aspect and also I had more than enough with one notch

  • Give 2

  • Only you. I along with them love it. #Innovation

  • No, it's awesome. It's like ZTE's concept Iceberg. Bring it on as this is the only way you'll get your pitiful front fp scanner while getting the Allscreen look. See my past comment. You'll understand the technicalities.

  • This phone seems promissing, the display seems really nice, it's a sharp one i guess :) If it's a sony camera sensor it should be really good, i'm ok with the 2 knotches to be honest I don't think they look that bad, I like this look more than my Huawei P20 Lite to be honest.

  • Ugliest phone I have never seen

  • Snap845. 5.2" 2500mah, 9.3mm why?

  • A dual notch where the 2nd notch blends with the fingerprint scanner? I've been waiting for this design for a long time! Insta buy and innovative too. I can't wait for other phone companies to figure out how to make the bottom bezels flush with the side and top bezel by adding a notch on the front fingerprint scanner (that's where the wires that connects the display and the scanner will intertwine). Note this guys, (display connector wires and the scanner's wires will intertwine to look flush together)

  • Are Sharp 'engineers' aware of how ugly this $h!t is?
