Not a bad phone, many features, like wap, java, sms client, camera, etc. Unfortunately built-in MP3 player is useless, and mindless security settings interrupt the downloaded java mp3 player after each song. More disturbing is tthat he SMS writing is not convenient at all.

There are lots of games for this phone in www.getjar.com and www.emobilez.com and in www.mobile9.com too. You may also request any particular games from me if you want. Just mail me at [email protected]. About the karaoke, this phone can play karaoke through java application called karaoke.jar. I can provide it for you if you want. Playing music with lyrics is also supported in this model. Just load the .lrc file together with the song in the same folder. So if you have Bohemian Rhapsody.mp3 in your music folder pair it with Bohemian Rhapsody.lrc and the phone will play the song and display its lyrics at the same time. With this, I recommend that you use LyricsShow application because it can display the lyrics in full screen and not line by line.

Do not rely on the user guide alone because it may not contain everthing that is in the phone. In OT S853, nowhere in the manual that you can find how to reset to fix the hang-ups problem of the phone but we have helped people providing it. Again, do not fully trust the manual to be able to use your phone in the maximum. Do a research about your phone and you can do it here and in any other forum. The actual users can tell everything here.

@ P@dj I had the same problem with my old C701. I was listening to music when it ran out of battery power. It switched off. I decided to recharge it but when I connected the AC charger, the battery icon will not show up. I tried charging it by connecting it to the PC through the USB cable. The battery icon would show and it would seem to be charging. But, even after more than an hour of charging, the phone would still not boot. If I press the power button, the Alcatel logo would show for about a second then the phone would die. I brought it to a phone shop and they repaired it by reformatting the phone. After that it was OK, though, I lost all the contacts, messages and files stored in the phone. I actually encountered the problem twice and on the same occassions - the phone died while I was listening to music. The second time it happened, while I was at the repair shop, I was able to talk to another Alcatel user. He had a different model, but we had the same problem and he said he already had his phone reformatted a few times. I guess this is a common bug with Alcatel phones. And, I also read in the forums here about Alcatel users experiencing the same problem. After that incident, I decided to buy another phone (different brand).

The phone is almost ok, but has very annoying problems: Music player: I simply want to play all files in a directory. Can't do this with this phone! SMS, for languages other than English: all my previous phones could transmit the letter "�" (a') as a single character. This one can't. Entering a single "�" immediately reduces SMS length to 80. Therefore I can't even use the predictive typing in languages containg "�" if I need more than 80 characters for my SMS. My software version is 010 01.

Nice looking phone (I have the black version), lots of features for the price, easy to use. Love the outside controls for playing MP3s. Would definitely recommend it. Main drawback: photo quality... I assume the JPG compression level is set way too high. Anyone knows of a utility to change that? There used to be one for Treo smartphones

I have been pleased with my C701, except about two weeks ago (just as I left for vacation) the lower right corner of my display developed a black blotch that extends about 16 mm along the bottom and right side of the screen, and about 3-4 mm into the display, with rounded edges. Most of the pixels are just black, but a few sprinkled throughout the blotch have constant but random colors. Although I am usually very careful with my things, the phone slipped off my belt and may have landed (in leather case) on that corner of the case. This occurred the day before the blotch appeared. Has anyone else encountered this? Is it damage to the display from the fall, or wildly coincidental moisture, software glitch, ...? Is it fixable (for less than the cost of another phone)? Tomorrow will be the first chance I'll be able to get back to the store to ask about it, looking for perspective. Thanks.

a simple way to download songs in mp3 format is to use a card reader...plug the card reader using usb to your pc and insert the memory to the card reader... but to determine which folder to use/ or compile your mp3 is to transfer mp3 from another phone using bluetooth...make sure that the mp3 is stored to your phone memory... then transfer that mp3 to your memory card...the phone will automatically make a folder on that particular mp3... then using the card reader, drag and drop mp3 to that folder... hope i have helped you nina

I have this phone. I don't think there is actually a password. It is quite loud, and bluetooth is easy to do. I would probably say this was the best phone I have used. I have never had your problems, but the normal answer is 1234 or your phone number.

To transfer music, first install the software, then turn your phone on, open it, and when you plug the usb cable into the phone, it will show a menu in the phone screen, select the option mass storage device. After that, the pc will show the phone as a usb storage device, just have to add the music to the phone music folder.

If you insert a memory card in the phone it should show up on the PC as a removeable drive when you hook it up to usb. Just simply copy your music in the music folder.

It includes a built in mp3 player but I can't figure out how to transfer the music from my computer to my cell phone. i'm not very good with this stuff and it's driving me crazy. Alcatel has a PC suite in the works which is compatible with Vista and they are working on several other patches too. The best way for now would be for you to get a memory card reader (or buy a usb adapter for the memory card).

Is a cool phone with all the "new" features an is cheap for having music player and Bluetooth. I love the design closed, open is very old fashion. And abput the themes the menus could be more sophisticated, but is easy to use! and is cool that has PC connection and includes in the Box all the software and data cable

Vista is sadly not suported (yet), but a card reader and place the files you want on your memory card through that, that will work fine! Card readers are really cheap now, they come as small key ring sized devices (almost like a usb stick) for under 10 �.

As far as I know the Alcatel E805 headset is included which has a built in volume control a 3.5 mm jack plug and a handsfree function (corded with microphone built in).

Maybe it depends upon the country this model is sold. Here in the Philippines it is only OT-E801 alike headset is included, the one mini usb plug on the other end. But we have the option to buy OT C825 headset where there is a standard headset jack.

I got this GREAT handset in EGYPT in Feb. 2008 I asked about its MicroSD size limit, EVERY one told me that it's limited to 1GB even the local agent,, But I found just 2 web sites (All are in UK) says that it can handle upto 2GB!! I installed a 2GB MicroSD in it and it works vey well, although the agent says that it'll hang!!!, I think they don't no much about what they sell!! And I think that all of the C707 & C717 are also handle 2GB MicroSD cause the also have the same core design. I repet again..... IT WORKS WELL WITH 2GB MicroSD memory card. In Egypt 1GB MicroSD priced as L.E. 65, while 2GB is priced as L.E. 75 so is there a reason to cut a 1GB for L.E. 10 while the device can handle all of it!!!!!!!!!!!! And don't forget to get a MicroSD USB reader priced as L.E. 5, the handset is slaw in uploading to MicroSD card, the PC is much faster. Does any body tried higher capacity with it i.e. 4GB ??

Smith, did you buy a simlock free version of the phone or did it come with its own simcard... if it came with its own card then you can use cards only from that provider... and if your card that you wish to use is not from the same provider the phone will not work unless you unlock the simlock. A simlock is normal to be featured on a pre pay phone.

Actually althought its a VGA camera on this cellphone, it takes better pics than my E50, which is 1.3mpx(but I take them at vga),,, its not the size of the picture, but the processing and camera cells,,, I regret buying my e50, although its a high-quality phone, the C701 (which I bought for my mom) is really nice, headset, microSD, really neat.

I would like to remind all users of this phone that the official maximum capacity for this model is 1 GB. And although alcatel declared it officially, this phone still can hold up to 2 gb of micro sd memory card. Just make it sure that all things that you put into your card are those file that this phone supports. Putting ut .pdf or other files not supported by this phone will result to a very slow performance. And about the memory card brand, the best micro sd brand for this phone is of course the alcatel brand as you can see here ==>>http://www.cellatel.com/acc_microsd.html. Sandisk is also the best but this phone still works fine with other brands. And to those who expect best picture quality from this phone, this is a phone with vga camera so you cannot expect higher picture quality from this (but this is still best among vga cameras). If you need to have a high quality pictures, go buy PENTAX OPTIO M40 - the 8 megapixel camera or go for a 12 megapixel cannon camera.

I would suggest everyone to get SanDisk cards as the phone was developed using them. Also... this phone should support all 1GB cards... though depending on the brand it could also hold 2GB cards. But as not all brands are supported Alcatel advises 1GB so that all cards work. But you could try which card works best for you... try a 2GB SanDisk one... should work... if not... return it for a 1GB one ;)

WhiteCarnage, the phone performs perfectly fine if you use its embedded features... like the mp3 player which is really great working and as fast as it should be... the only area where this phone "lags" compared to the Nokia's is in the java performance, though it does support java games it can happen that new and technically "hardware heavy" games (like some high res and 3d games) will not run properly or not at all on it... but you have to know... this phone is not meant to compete with more expensive 2 megapixel, 3D java enabled phones. This is meant as a cheap well equiped mp3 player/phone which also has a VGA cam. And when look at it that way the phone is really good and you can't go wrong... but it you expect to use it for hardcore mobile gaming beware that some high resolution games will not work. We found this OT-C701 because of its cheap price and its g0od features, we are tempted... Just a question people, is the processor of this phone really that slow? C0z were already used with Nokias that have fast processor. I own a Nokia 3110c that have fast processor. The Nokia 3110c has a CPU type and speed of ARM 9, 238mhz but this Alcatel OT-C701 had unbelievably low CPU type and speed, the CPU is ARM 7, 65mhz. Check at www.jbenchmark.com... That is not strange, because not every PC and or laptop has a bluetooth transceiver so adding a bluetooth option in the PC suite would not make sense as most people don't yet have it on their PC.

You are in risk the cellphone WONT read a 4gb microSD, 2gb will read Putting a 2gb (beyond said) card, will slow your cellphone's speed, and when accessing the Card's data, it will be really slow (compared to the recomended 1gb card) Alcatel ISNT lying, they are just suggesting you, a card that will accept the cellphone (2gb cards are in risk they wont be read by cellphone, or work too slow in it)

What's the "real" maximum memory card capacity for this model? I know this is a repeated question, but please read on... I've 1GB memory card, and I was told that this is the maximum this model can hold. But, after reading other users' comments about installing 2GB cards, I decided to contact Alcatel. They said, It's 1GB. I told them; but others have 2GB, and I gave them a link to this site, which states that 2GB memory cards are working fine with this model. They replied; The maximum "official" memory card is "still" 1GB. My questions are: - If 1GB is the maximum, and 2GB is working fine, does this mean I can install cards beyond the maximum capacity, say, 4GB? - If I installed a memory card beyond the maximum capacity, do I risk corrupting/losing data? damjan: about ur frist question u have to install alcatel ot-c701 PC Suite and i think u already installed it from the CD with the phone after this pulgin USB cable with ur phone u going to get USB config screen on ur phone with options mass storge, Webcam ,COM port ,charging . pick COM port and press okey then open the ALCATEL PC Suite from ur computer desktop when the program start pick ur phone model ot-c701 then click next the program will ask u if u connect the USB cable with ur phone and u set the COM port prss okey for this message then press next the program will search for ur phone and it gona apears in the list under Device name when u see ur phone in the list press connect and ur phone will be connect with ur PC. about ur second question to buy microSD 512mb yea it suport music u can play music from microSD through ur phone and this phone have loud speakrs the sound quality in this phone very good.

abo_3mod, just check the menu and you will found out that there is option for the phone to ring through its speaker and not through headset when sombebody is calling. Just check the menu or read the manual. About the picture quality, this is still best when we talk about VGA. Remember that this phone has vga camera but anyway, you can edit the picture you have taken using picture editor. There are lots of free editor on the web.

I love Alcatel and i bought this phone but this wat i did not like in it, frist of all - voice recorder so poor when u playback wat u recored u only hear ur voice clear but if any one speak around u u can hardly hear them. - same when u use video recorder pules if u use the zoom key's u can hear ur strokes on the keys so loud when u palyback wat u recorded and it is so annoying. - poor quality pic that taken by phone when i put it on my pc. - while u play music throw phone speaker and closed the cover the sound get low - if u plug in the headphone and after u use it forget to unpluge it u not gona hair any phone call cuz it gona ring throw the headphone. but i love this phone :-)

Whenever you connect to a bluetooth device (phone or headset) the device will ask for a pincode (for the sake of security) usually the pincode is "0000" if it was not changed by the user... don't worry its perfectly normal.

Oh my god, this phone gets better & better! I only put Shrek on my daughters phone! Bluetooth player, MP3 player, video recorder/player, camera (although the quality isn't 100%), Java games (free downloadable ones too!), WAP, MP4 player (although the MP4's didn't seem to work, I had to convert them to 3GP's, a reasonable webcam (i've had worse resolution from a proper webcam)All for less than �50! Forget the top of the range �400+ phones, if you want something cheap and cheerfull with more features than you can shake a stick at, then this phone is for you. My daughter is only 9 so an expensive phone is out of the question. Also available in black! If anyone wants any advice on utilizing all the features on this phone just give me a shout! I'd give it a 8/10 for features and 10/10 for value for money

Daniel, your unit should have been loaded with GPRS settings for SMART, GLOBE and SUNCELLULAR but that is if your unit comes from versatile or its retailer around the Philippines. Just try to check it. But if in case it don't have maybe because you got it from another source, here is the configuration for globe. This phone is FANTASTIC!!! I know its Alcatel, BUT........ This has all the features you could want on a phone retailing at 4 or 5 times its price. I bought this for my 9 year old daughter for her birthday, she has gone through so many phones over the past couple of years that I didn't want to spend too much on a phone which potentially could have a two week life span judging by the way she treats them (she went through 3 in a week!). She basically wanted one which played MP3's and Bluetooth and I chose this one purely by accident. It has a rubber type coating so it doesn't get scratched, the memory is rubbish but I managed to get a 2Gb memory card for just over �10 which is better for putting MP3's on rather than downloading them to the phone (this seems to take ages!) you just drag and drop them into the folders. I was told at the shop that she wouldn't be able to play her MP3's in Bluetooth (i.e. Bluetooth speakers) but they were wrong, I picked up a lovely set of speakers for �40 and I am pretty envious of the set up she now has. I have a Sony Ericson which has nowhere near the spec that she now has! The only drawback is that the keypad design looks cheap (typical Alcatel) unlike the outside which looks great! And the camera is rubbish, but for �50 I've spent a lot worse! Get your kids one for Christmas, they won't be disappointed!

hi i just figured out that the ffd and rwd buttons isnot ment to ffd or rwd music , because there is an option in the music player where i choose the ffd and rwd buttons to either increase and decrease the volume or to skip to the next song but no third option to ffd and rwd.. anyway the phone is gr8 dont care for damn ffd and rwd thnx for your reply

sorry to interrupt, but I think alcatel needs to check for some of the debugs on their phone software, in some instances the phone would be scanning for the musics on my media card what was surprising it doesn't have the system to compare the names of the songs saved, some of the songs would be played twice, plus there is no consistency in the software installation when using an alcatel phone for only 6 days, it's prone to hang - up some of the images in some of their units seems to be look untidy or rather to say unfinished, good to have a replacement for the first unit that i've had that seem to have a software deffect. in general please improve the softwares and the mobile hardware it needs alot of more attention than having a nice looking phone.

Hey guys this phone was really a great, i like the built-in speaker, the image quality was fine, with a micro-sd memory card a maximum of 1gb, never tried the software yet, but one of the thing that makes it nasty is the cover of the usb port it could easily break if your not careful while using it, What I also hate about this product is that it has no system to automatically detect the head set, so far not yet found how to configure this thing so that I could use the advantage of it.

Before the first time you use the software, u must turn off the phone and connect it to the computer. Then the pc will read it as Mass Storage device. Now u have to disable hardware, disconnect the phone, turn on the phone and, finally, connect it to the computer. Then, it will work properly or you still have to go to the software settings and choose the correct port. It was hard for me to figure this out... I always try not to read the manual, but in this case this is a must. Love this phone! Salut

One thing that's preventing me from getting this is the proprietary earphone/headphone. As mentioned somewhere here, if this had the normal baby stereo jack then it I wouldn't doubt for a second!

i bought this unit last sept.9 only but on the 2nd day i noticed that something is wrong with the phone.....take note it was brand new....but the worst thing is wen the airplane in the heliminator game doesnt appear and sometimes the phone hangs that why i forwarded the phone to the service center o n sept13..but until now the phone is not yet in my care...this is my 1st time to try an ALCATEL phone and i was disappointed....i like its features but the quality is low...i hope to hav my phone as soon as posible

it's almost 1 day already since I had my C701 phone.. It works fine! I love the orange face cover which has a rubbery feel.. :) I only have problems with the speakers and the stereo headset.. When you close the clamshell, you won't be able to hear the music very well since the speakers are located in the earpiece! You can hear the volume at its loudest when the clamshell is opened, having the earpiece exposed.. Also, the headset is not very comfortable! They don't fit very well in my ears.. They easily come off when I move around.. So far, despite those problems I mentioned, it's working great for me! I won't be using this for a long time anyway coz' I'm waiting for the arrival of my Sony Ericsson K810! :) So I'll be giving away my C701 to my brother when I get my new K810!!

I just bought mine a while ago! it looks so great! i have the orange colored c701 and it looks expensive, even though it's not.. hehe.. :) I love it!!! i bought a 1GB microSD and it's working great.. what i love about is the mini USB port of the phone.. you can use any kind of mini usb wire to plug into your phone and charger!!!! :) if only this thing came with a 3.55mm jack port! it would awesome!!!

totally confused: go to "My Settings" then "ringtones" then press the right button 8 times then select "silence". That should do it. As for me, I don't find it irritating. I find it cool, actually :D

you should be able to change the sound for open and close the clamshell - the english manual (from my-onetouch dot com) mention it on page 44 - you properly need scroll down in the list to find no sound option amoung the various ring tones PS I wanna have this phone! It looks very cool and the features in the manual are very promising
