  • I'm using this phone since 2009, it's been 7 years of good service (2016 now). It's rooted and it has a Froyo ROM. Just replaced the battery about 2 years ago. Now, I'm looking for another phone just because I can't play Pokemon Go with it and Whatsap will be discontinued for Android 2.x later this year. Oh, and I got it from Google for $420 USD back then, wich is the Developer's version (HTC Dream G1 Dev Phone 1). It was a good investment.

The new phones nowadays are preloaded with so much junkware, that now it takes basically 1.5GB to run Android and a bunch of junkware you cannot delete, which drains the crap out of the battery. I liked Android better when Google and Samsung didn't pre-install pointless apps that kill your battery. But still, Androids the best operating system ever created.

  • dear kunal, change network setting "WCDMA Only" or "3G Only" to "WCDMA Prefered" or "3G Prefered". If u set this "WCDMA Prefered" or "3G Prefered" that means it try to search 3G network.   • There is no more updates for that device. If it still is at 1.6 than you have missed a few updates, including maintenance releases. The only way to have it updated to 2.2 is to have that ROM flashed onto the device, which HTC is happy to do but will be at a cost to you, unless you are within the one year purchase date warranty.

  • I have a partially operational Ice Cream Sandwich mod working on this and ive had a fully operational (and fairly fast if you use the right settings and MTP partion) working on it, i think its an excellent phone and all they need to do is release a better digistizer for it so 3d gaming is possible and a new motherboard with more ram, but i really like the actual handset itself

  • I am actually using Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread on my HTC Dream G1. You can find it in Google searching for ezGingerbread, it is an unofficial, very speedy, rock solid rom by developer ezTerry. There is also an ICS rom, but it is very slow, unstable and some features don't work.

  • yeah u r ri8.it cant recieve data in old softwear version '1.6'.you can update its version to 2.2.in new versiion it can recieve data through bluetooth.

  • A great in road to android, its showing its age a little now as the cpu/gpu/ram arent quite up to the standard of modern phones but it can comfortably run gingerbread as a day to day os, everything works, sat nav, camera the lot and its a well built phone with a good keyboard all in all if youre looking for a very cheap (£50-£75) solid android phone you could do far worse than picking up one of these, especially if youre a fan of hardware keyboards like me, but personally im feeling the pinch of the specs so it may upgrade time for me but i couldnt have asked for a better introduction

Apn:ur mobile oparetor internet name. Apn type:default.then again press menu and save this & can see ur mobile oparetor name.& also u see the right side a circle.then touch this circle.u can see the circle get green color. anyway u can search mobile oparetor internet settings in google.u wrote like Airtel/tmobile internet settings.maybe u"ll solve this problem.

  • hello there. first, HBOOT is not installed from factory. you need root and possibly lates version of busybox. you also need to know the kind of board you have.

  • There is no official upgrade of the htc dream to any android higher than 1.6. Your only chance is an unofficial like cyanogen mod. You need to downgrade to 1.5, become root, install a flashing utility, and off you go. Upgrade to 2.1 certain, possibly even 2.2 or 2.3. Will void your warranty and may brick your phone, but well worth it if it works. Good luck! :-)

  • Hiya Tactu mare, you are both right and wrong in what you said as some providers rename the handsets that are on their network for example htc dream = t mobile g1 htc Hero = t mobile G2 and ZTE Blade = Orange Sanfransisco, look it up dude :-)

  • You need to setup your Access Point Name (APN). You can find this under Settings -> Wireless Controls -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> press Menu button -> New APN Depending of the provider you are on you need to fill New APN fields. To get this data you can look on the internet or call your provider. After you are done, just find the application Toggle APN and click on it. This should activate your 3G Internet access within 30 seconds. Hope this helps.

  • i have had htc for 6months and the 1st time i got it had battery problems,sent it for reapairs it came back with more problems..with every simcard that is in the phone it gives me the error massage: no service...when i sent it for repairs for the last time"it went up to jhb..htc service centre" it came back the same.now it economically inrepairable..due to durban humidity...now im still paying for handset that doesn't work.

  • I got this as part of a 3 year contract from Rogers Mobile in canada, for 3 months it worked fine, till I started noticing the poor battery life it started giving. It would die out in 6 hours of working. All this was working under 2G mode, cause in 3G mode its just annoyingly low on battery power. I returned this under warranty, got the replacement. Now again after 3 months it has the same issue low battery power. I ve not updated the android or installed any weird apps. Unforunately now I have to opt for something new.

  • i just use the Dream for couple of weeks, at the beginning its truly confusing.. but after i got the manner this is amazing phone,,all running well, wi-fi, mobile network, multimedia could go at one..

  • no need to using gprs, juz go to place which have wifi then turn on the wifi therefore u can update the account

  • if you remove the mask it will be a lot easier "batman". typing with both onscreen and slyding keyboard is going well. If it is not the mask, suggestion take typing lessons

  • Own one, its alright. But its really slow after a while. If you get a lot of texts/email and know a lot of people (big contact list) its a no go. Don't waste your money, its nice. But not great. Also, if you put on 7GB of Music, the Music player dies.

What good is a color screen and a nice little keyboard when the phone has the WORST reception I have ever experienced ... takes often many minutes to load a single page ... and the battery has a very short charge. As well, the phone has a very slow processer, so it either goes into "la-la" land for minutes at a time with just a few apps open, or just crashes completely. The latest firmware upgrade was a nightmare for users ... forcing them to backup everything, and loading the program using a multi-step cryptic process. And don't think this is an iPhone alternative ... it is not !! There is less than 10% of the number ... much less variety ... of apps available to Appple users. In short, avoid this phone at ALL costs !!

  • I have this phone for almost a year and i recommend this phone a lot; the battery last in a day with a heavy usement (web browsing , messenger, sybc with gmail all the time, calling, etc), and about two or three days with the sync turned off. I haven't got any trouble with it. In fact i am so happy; if you don't like cupcake, upgrade to Donut ^.^.   • For all of you battling with battery life, there is an app that I use which suites my needs to save battery life. I don't need to be permanently connected to my data connection as I have a connection at work on my pc. Therefore I use APNdroid to turn it on/off as needed. My battery now lasts 2-3 days depending on my 3G/WiFi usage with moderate calling and smses! Not bad at all;-) Thought it may help some of you ;-)

  • The best phone I have ever had. The battery life could be better but I have two. Tracking ball has a tendency to wear out. With that said I still would not trade my phone for any other out there.

  • Battery life is not good but I suggest you keep an extra battery. As for the bluetooth problem, check that the other device is enabled for sending and receiving files. For example, with my Blackberry Bold I can only receive file after I have paired it first and then choose the 'receive file with bluetooth' option.

  • This is probably the best phone out there. The Diamond versions of HTC is over rated. If this phone has a dedicated 3.5 mm jack the reviews would have been better. Also, the touch sensitivity is on par of Apple iPhone. Personally, I have an influx of most awesome phone available and this is one of my top 5.

The mobile is fantastic, way better then ipone and way customized then ipone. Cell with a single button sucks like ipone, try using g1 .. if you do not like it .. i never agree.. :D

Upon using the HTC Dream for two days, I realised the following: It has not got unscreen keyboard, No document reader for my microsoft files, battery life was very short. The browser was very fast.   • Hey I had to call Htc to connect to the PC... you have to go onto their website and d/l the program for your PC to be able to recognize the phone... (ps terrible customer service) once you d/l the program the Pc and phone should sync without an issue.

  • What phone did you use? Android is intuitive, easy to use, fast, fun and extremely customizable. It is by far no disaster. The problem with this phone is Android being too powerful for the hardware. It runs well and is fast overall, but it can definitely use a faster processor as this is almost like having a laptop in your pocket.

  • Having had my G1 since launch, I can easily go a day without charging but it will usually be about dead after 48 hours. My G1 is also overclocked and I still get a decent battery life.

  • The Dream is a pleasure to use. I've been using it for 2 months now and I just can't put it down. It's smooth and stable. Two things u should consider before buying it is that u need unlimited data plan to fully enjoy the set and u need to have ur charger handy cos the battery runs down pretty fast. U also cannot easily tether it to ur PC to use it as a modem. Apart from those weaknesses, I think android is the way to go. If u are comfortable with full touch screens, I will recommend u look at slimmer android phones like the magic, or hero. Hope it helps u decide

  • Had the G1 for about a mth or 2. Usage wise had been a joy of use. Little setbacks would definitely be the lack of bluetooth file transfer (receiving) as there's a needed to root the G1. Got it updated to cupcake and I must say there's a drastic feel to the os. Camera wise,go get a digicam. Don't depend on it but it's ok I guess for a random shot. The 'market' is bloated with the gd and equally bad appz. Sadly the street view is not available for singapore users. Well the gd stuff about this G1? It's equip with qwerty keyboard for the ease of emails & text. And oh ya,it's a google phone that's why it's fun of use! Well if I still got a choice to choose again which android phone for me to use,it would still be the G1 for it's 'pratical' design which is with the qwerty.

  • I love this device except for one thing, the battery life. The battery life on the HTC Dream is horrible!! That is a MAJOR disadvantage to this device. I have a Blackberry Bold and for performing the same functions on this device as the Dream such regular use of internet, e-mail, and calling I get MUCH better battery life out of the Bold. For performing the same functions and for the same amount of time, I got 3 days use on the Bold whereas I got less than a day of use on the Dream.

Music player is SWEET if used with a good headset. l'm using a skullcandy and it's just fantastic. Display and touchscreen response are also wonderful.Camera is good under bright conditions. Battery is on the weak side. No where near my old but very reliable E61i. Over all l think it's a nice phone.

So they promptly sent me out a replacement but unfortunately THAT one was defective and wouldn't even turn on. So by the third time, it was finally a charm, but still was having a battery overheating issue even by the third one, so when I called back Tmobile for a 4th time they offered to exchange it out again but I told them to just send me a battery replacement, because I didn't want to go through all the trouble again to download all the apps I had on it. So since I changed out the battery I have had better success. Some great things about the phone are the different applications that are made for it to allow you to make your phone completely unique to you. One of my favorite apps is called OPEN HOME, it allows you to change your background screens, icon looks to such a degree that at first glance it makes you take a double take at the screen. I highly recommend the program another program I use is called BETTER KEYBOARD that allows you to change the look of the keyboard. Very nice. The Android Market is great for direct download of apps but I do wish that it had a software system connection for PC such as the Application store for the Apple Itouch and IPhone. I own an Apple Itouch and must say I do enjoy the convenience of going online checking reviews and seeing screenshots of the software before I decide to download an app. I think if this option was made available it would help customers out and not clog the network so badly with delayed downloads. Last but certainly not least is the keyboard, I enjoy a physical keyboard, I have a bit of a heavy hand when it comes to my phones and I type very quickly so being able to touch actually keys versus a touchscreen keyboard is a plus. Yet I know that it does add to the bulk of the phone I do think for myself it is a necessity. The biggest gripes I have had with the phone have been the accessories, camera, battery life, and internal memory. Also another issue that comes to mind is finding accessories, especially cases for the phone. I guess this can be attested to the keyboard but still even with different cases that are out there and for the phone to almost to have been out for a year, it still is very lacking. With the camera I will say compared to other phones I've had in the past such as LG and Motorola, the camera is simply horrible. Yet I have seen some improvements with the cupcake update but that is only through an application I downloaded called SnapPhoto Pro. I recommend it over the camera software that came with the phone. The battery life definitely will drain big if you are on the internet, but I find it even drains quickly when I'm on phone calls that last about 10 minutes or so, not for hours at a time. The internal memory is a reallly big issue. For all the apps on Android Market it becomes a game of playing which apps to keep on your phone. I think the phone really was a big disapointment in that aspect. Overall I've been happy with the phone but it is far from perfect. PROS Operating system- Like the freedom Google has given to the OS system in regards to development and user friendly to understand features Android Market- great pipeline to new software Keyboard- I type so fast that Im not a big fan of the touchscreen keyboards, I prefer a physical one. CONS Battery Life- To me drains fully within under 4 hours of regular not extreme usage Camera- pictures are grainy even after auto-focus Weight- it's a bit of a brick Internal Memory- too little especially if you want to take advantage of Android Market

  • I am a Rogers Wireless customer in Vancouver Canada and own 2 HTC DREAMS. I am dissapointed! if you want to use the google MAPS program, you may be very dissapointed with this phone. Unlike all other phones that can use google MAPS to find direction from point "A" to point "B" by transit, walking or driving... the HTC DREAM will only give direction for driving. there is no update for this phone and the factory installed google MAPS cannot be removed so that you could download the version that does have walking and transit directions. if you want walking and transit directions, buy any other phone and download the free google MAPS program. Isn't it stupid that any phone not using a google platform has full google MAPS (the best google experience)... but the HTC DREAM with a google platform does not have the full google MAPS version (a bad google experience). Hopefully they fix this problem quickly and offer an update to the programing.

  • Great phone! New 1.5 update makes it better. Only downfall is some bad reception and the battery not being so great. However, everything else is AMAZING! Switched from a t-mobile dash.   • I've had this phone for a couple of months now and, after the cupcake upgrade, is very good. Battery has improved greatly (with 3g off and wifi on). I also have two iphone's 2g and 3g which I find to be a lot slower than the Dream. Market is great too.The feel is a bit bulky.. but you get used to it. Screen great, camera not bad.

  • This phone is great, and not just because of the OS, but that's a large part of it. As a developer for the OS I find it perfect in every way. As for the phone itself, it does have pretty terrible battery life and feels pretty flimsy in your hand. I wouldn't want to drop it very much. It's also kind of big. The battery life downside can be fixed by simply turning off the "Auto Sync" feature of the phone. If you need email notifications, use the Email software, and not the Gmail, you can configure it to check less frequently (auto sync syncs *everything* every 5 minutes, that's what kills your battery).

Love it but the battery sucks after charging it, i have to charge it two times daily on a basic function like sms, playing with the phone and surfing the net.. for about an hour the battery is half the capacity.. but over all performance is grat its like an iphone... 3d graphics is just awesome apps awsome but unlike iphone it doesnt have any virtual keyboard.. touch screen is great btw i have g1, iphone and pixon.. i used to have the xperia but the screen size is small and the edge of the screen on xperia make it difficult to use the touchscreen...   • Evidently the battery life depends on the usage, which makes sense. Turning features off that you might not be needing, things that are by default running, turning down the screen brightness as it already is bright enough you can take steps to prolong the battery life for the day. you still are gonna end up charging at least once a day, say through the night, maybe give it some juice here and there if you have a charger for the car. But if your constantly surfing the web, taking and responding to emails/IMs and making constant calls then you can expect the phone to drain rather quickly. Wonder when we'll start seeing newer batteries with amazingly long charge times.

  • i have the g1, and the battery does NOT last nearly as long as it says it does. i would use the phone, and about 2 hours later, my phone would die. another thing about this phone is that it does not have microsoft on it.. you have to buy it for 15 dollars and it also currently does NOT have java. that's one thing that i've always hated since i use the internet on this phone a lot. the speaker phone's sound is pretty good. the music player isn't that good, but once you download the mixzing player, it is great! overall, the phone is alright, but just not for me.

  • Well in my opinion, 1. Android 2. Windows Mobile 3. Symbian Symbian, nothing wrong with it really... it works.. but thats all.. but over time it ll' slow down.. (if u refrain from updating regulary) Windows Mobile. More functions. and alot of windows goodies. But same thing for the updating, and windows is just like u have on your PC at home.. which u yell at often. Android. Its a breeze, very easy to get used to, updating goes automaticly if u have internet. open source is the best of all. if there's a problem? let the whole world solve it. only disadvantage is the fact that it doesnt support flash.. but thanks to the open source thingy. that ll' be solved soon.

  • the hardware has great, limitless potential. the only problem is the phone is really fugly, feels cheap & nasty & the slide mechanism to find the qwerty keyboard seems a tad fragile and may have issues with constant opening & closing over time. it's the packaging letting this phone down, not the heart of the phone. so i'd say to those wanting a google centric phone wait till better quality gear comes later in '09.

  • one finger multittouch for 5800/n97 very simple to implement zoom/rotate control by doubletapping you set a control point and when you drag the control takes efect need just one hand to controll (multitouch needs two hands to control - you have to hold the device with other hand develope it now and upload it to Ovi store, make it free or donationware:) no more iphone is needed!

Mix in the fact that Google had to release a major update on the first day of release, and my suspicions are further raised!
