Ok... so managed to get this phone to work. It is the exact same copy of the LG Arena haha.. the camera while it is 8MP, the Renoir camera is way better as far as quality, but the Viewty Smart is slightly better than the Arena. Music player is the same as the Arena except it is now missing the 3.5mm jack, and it is also missing the 8GB storage, WHY?! Good fun with fun little gadgets! Outdated but can still function very well

Bought this phone out of whim, when I opened it the software was very irresponsive. Once I fixed it, the battery became weak and the charge cable doesn't work.. I have yet to play with this device :(

If by touch pad you mean the number pad for dialling, touch the Green button with a white phone in it down the bottom left corner. I hope this helps

bought this phone when it first went out.. wanted to be the first to have an 8m camera phone.. lol.. i have this phone for 3 years now.. and it's still working.. the only problem is.. it's not scratch free!! the sound is not that loud.. even if it's dolby! :( the camera is great though.. it's not made for mobile internet browsing.. coz' of the screen, the graphics are very small and you have to enlarge it first before you can enter data.. other than that, the phone is okay.

Hey. I have had this phone for just over a year now and have loved it! I have dropped it a lot, and i mean a lot and it's till in pretty good nick, apart from some scratches. But the button and the bottom has become a little unresponsive. So i do have to click it like 5 times for it to work. But the camera is great. I don't think they were thinking straight though when they made the headphones. Because it's really annoying not having the normal headphone jack. Also my speaker has got something wrong with and like ticks when i play music, even if it's just like a *Ding* saying i got a new text message. But other wise a great phone!Also can anyone tell me if it costs to download facebook?! Thanks!

I agree. This phone is really a pain in butt. Other than the camera, this phone is NOTHING. Please don't buy. There is no option to minimize your music if you want to write SMS or dial new call or check the other features. There is no option to turn off the Homescreen setting Trouble in using the touch screen You can hear some different sound similar to if you wave your hands in a water (splash) Document viewer not at all working. Often I am getting the error message as "Maximum File size exceeded"

This phone is awful don't buy! Slow/non-existent working internet and not much better when using your own wi-fi! Very slow working and not very sensitive screen- it's a pain in the back side for sending texts and using generally! Even more annoying, when the phone is in silent mode, the low battery sound continually beeps, you can't turn it off!

I had the same problem screen went completely blank when making and receiving calls so I couldn't answer calls. I did a proximity calibration (found in phone settings) and this solved the problem. Also a live reboot where you disconnect the battery when the phone is switched on can help with any other issues. I no longer have this problem :)

i had that problem before.. but that not the phone problem.. the problem is "screen protector". u cannot put screen protector for this phone..( i guess). after i remove my screen protector, that problem dsappear. i can answer the call like usualy... hihihihihi

Seems like the "blanking out screen" and not being able to answer incoming calls is common to this phone - I don't hav a manual so is anyone with a manual able to look this up to see if there is a cure???!!! It's frigging annoying!

i read all the comments about gc900. i cant understand y everyone is saying that this phone is very slow. i m using it and its an awesome phone. battery is superb. and u can view any movie in 720 x 480 resolution. the touch sensitivity is lot much better than any other touch phone.

look below person work for LG, Good way of marketing our products......... first LG should make good batteries for their phone, second is sound quality, Signal reception and better price. Having good features/design will not help when you dont have battery to uses those feature.

I think you are not using your phone correctly. It is very responsive, My phone is working with the flicks of finger, no need to press hard and repeatedly like other branch touch phones.

I am using LG GC900. This is the excellent phone from LG. Its 8.1 MP camera is fantastic, it is equal to 12.1 MP Camera Phone present in market. It can capture Video at 780p and Battery Life is 3 Days for normal use. Touch Screen is Very responsive.

The phone crashes and reboots on changing the Time Zone. I have been using this phone for more than a year now in India, but not able to change from London Time Zone :P. The only solution I could find is to set the time manually and not use any Time Zone. Indeed a horrible phone. Wish I was gifted an iPhone instead of this piece of crap :X

A terribly overpriced phone. Looks like LGE made this phone in a big hurry. The phone has numerous bugs in the Software and LG has not bothered to correct any of those. I cannot find any firmware updates for this phone. The phone is too slow. There is no way I would recommend this phone to anyone.

I was bought one of these by my other half, even they wish they hadn't, it has been problem after problem, very unresponsive when it needs to work and then putting it in my pocket i've caught the screen and its unlocked. The battery level can be down 1 marks yet a short phone call and you find it flat, several times this has happened. Zoom is slow and unresponsive during web sessions. You'd have thought that for a supposedly high level phone the headset would have inline volume control....it hasn't. The GPS has been as accurate as sticking a pin into a map while blindfolded, the closest it has ever been to my position was 1000 meters+ Though i did try to live with its faults (especially as it was a gift) i'm no resigned to having to use another mobile, the reason..... a belt buckle has gone THROUGH the plastic screen and cracked the LCD. I will NEVER get another LG

spoke to LG customer service today they claim that the screen is plastic and that all the sites that claim glass are wrong. i think LG are shonks and have changed the phone from gorilla glass when it was origanally released to be reviewed to plastic when it was sold to consumers. what a rude ignorant bunch of pricks in their call centres

Don't get this phone. It hangs too much even when I try a simple thing like go to settings! It can't multitask more than 2 apps - thats really limited! I have a LG pop and it has never hung on me and can multitask around 10 to 11 apps!

I use this phone since Septemper 2009 and i can tell you that it is a moderate slow phone! It has frozen some times and i had to restart to get back to normal ( my friend's gc900 does that too...). I have done all the updates(1 per 3 months from LG... pretty bad i think?) but it still is the SLOWEST phone you can get! pinch to zoom is so slow that some times when in browser you have to wait 5 seconds for it to zoom and even after these 5 seconds is not accurate enough so you have to zoom in or out again. You won't be able to install many apps except from those that are java apps (just not comparable with the apps of an android phone or a symbian phone or an iPhone or either a Samsung bada phone...)Camera is good at daylight...not night! Finally i think this phone could be great but maybe LG has given up on their interface (s-class) and have dissapointed me cause i really love the looks of the phone! I hope i helped you guys!

I had the original Viewty and it was a sweet phone, now I'm about to get this one and I hope not to be dissapointed. I like LG because it's very reliable, never had an issue with it. Just ask yourself do you want a great camera phone with video call capabilities or do you prefer a phone that has some more apps avaialble other than flash apps?

I've just bought the cellphone I'm really dissatisfied with the quality of the 8MP (?) camera. And the contact pictures are stored with all the other pictures. It's quite an inconvenience because when clearing out my pictures folder, I'm gonna loose all the contact pictures too. I used a SE K800i before this one, and the contact pictures were actually stored with the contacts in that one. Other than this, the phone is really good to use :D

i've had this phone for just over a year now. The features on this phone are pretty good but the processsing is extreamly slow especially scrolling down pictures songs and messages, my screen flickers on and off and different colours :s even though ive took care of it Dont get it its not worth the money, I'd suggest samsung galaxy s :) Thankss

This would have faired better if LG had included offline maps as Nokia do so the GPS would work without data connection.Some of us do go where there is no network connection. (if anything ALL makers should include offline maps as per Nokia, if Nokia can so can others)

if the software worked properly then this is a great LG version of an iphone. but mine crashes all the time. eg: -it will freeze when i access photos or music . -it will turn itself off when a text comes through. -it wont connect to my computer properly (i have vista ultimate) by cable or wireless. -sometimes stores photos that i take upside down. but each to there own when it comes to purchasing this phone. just be warned!

I have not read this comment before, so I thought it worth mentioning to any potential buyers. There is no way to turn off audible email notifications. Apart from this, the phone is very good for the price you pay. It does play flash video. Specifically, it connects to Youtube and plays the videos in the in-built player (not in browser).

Hey this happened to me too!! But if you look in the top right hand corner there will be this little circle thing. You you have ANYTHING covering it, even if it is one of those clearm films to protect the screen it wont work. So you cant have anything on it

A lot of people bag this mobile by LG because they simply do not understand just how power full it reall it. Look at the specs people: 480x800 screen resolution, not even the Omnia HD or iCrap by Apple has that resolution. Its also a capacitive multi-touch TFT screen which is the same technology that Apple uses for its iCrap mobile. The operating system on this handset is Linux Mobile, previously LG used Qualcomm's Brew operating system (i.e.: Viewty and Renoir) because they were using the Qualcomm's MSM6280/1 chipset, the Viewty Smart, Arena and Crystal now use the Infinion chipset which enables them to use Linux Mobile OS modded by LG under S-Class, and of course they developed there own UI which they called S-Class. The only let down was from LG, no developers used there SDK to create apps or widgets for there S-Class OS/UI, and LG have basically given up on S-Class OS/UI even the new Mini (GD800) is a waste of time by LG because there are no developers willing to make apps or widgets, I fear that Samsung will be in the same boat with its Bada operating system as the market is now geared towards Android and Mac OS Mobile. My main issue with the Viewty Smart is video recording and video playback. 1: Video Recording: Unlike the Renoir and Viewty, the Viewty Smart (including Arena and Crystal) encodes video in h.263 MPEG4 3GPP release 5 ... when using 640x480 (4:3) i.e.: crap quality bewcause the bit rate is only 1.5mbits, its hopeless, the Renoir & Viewty Smart for example encoded in DivX h.263 but the difference is bit rate which is 2.5mbits which makes a huge difference in quality and I would rather quality than small file size, even when you switch to 720x480 it encodes with the better avc h.264 codec but still uses low bit rate, while the Viewty and Renoir provided widescreen 16:9 recording. 2: Video Playback: It wont play anything bigger than 352x288 (CIF or VCD) when its DiVX encoded ... yet plays MPEG4 (h.263/h.264) 720x480 (D1) with ease ... just dumb from LG but I suspect that has more to do with Infinon than LG. If you look at the prices for the Viewty Smart, Arena and Crystal, in just 1 year they have dropped to around �320,00 ... Why? Well simply due to the competition and the fact that there are no apps/widgets for S-Class OS/UI. That said the Viewty Smart is actually a pretty powerful device and a pretty good mobile if you understand what the main use of this mobile is for.

honestly, same difference. most of the mobiles in this price range are pretty much the same. hubby has the samsung, i got the viewty smart and so far all i can say is the are equaly good. on balance, i'd probably go for the viewty as it has a better camera and excellent dolby sound but if your more an apps person, need to connect to social networking sites, then maybe the samsung is a better choice. i looked through so many reviews and it seems it's always the same: some love/hate x, love/hate y - and the reasons are so similar. unless you go for a really cheap mobile or a really expensive one, the difference is basically a different logo. lg looks better though if that's important but has only a 12 months warranty.

i have installed lg pc suite 3 and usb modem driver corresponding to gc900 after dwnloading from the net ( got the links after entering the imei number of my cell ) . my phone is being detected when i connect using usb cable as "mass storage device " however when i connect using "pc suite mode " and try to run the installer the following error pops up : " [error :038 ] Failed to copy installation package to system . Cannot create temporary installation directory . " hence the pc suite never recognizes the phone . someone plz help !

Pretty much the worst phone I have ever bought. I got lured by the 8MP camera and all-in-one feature set. My main requirement is the business aspect. The phone is absolute crap. The email does not work most of the time - Network not available. Even when it does, the phone restarts if the number of emails is over 20. There is no voice dial and so calling on the drive is very difficult. The pause symbol cannot be inserted and so certain numbers have to be entered manually. Bottomline, this is the worst decision I have ever made!

Just bought this phone free on £18 deal, it's good value. The screen is good, some minor slowness during texting but nothing too bad. The camera is good but not perfect, wifi works well. Gps doesn't seem to be functioning correctly but will have to try it out in the open. I prefer it to jet. A good buy for the price.

I had an LG KU990 phone was a great phone very pleased with functions and features so decided in Dec 09 to upgrade to the new LG KM900 Arena and have been very disapointed with new phone as the Touch is not as good/responsive its Capacitive Touch Not Resistive so its heat sensitive cant use a stylus or pen only finger and the quality of camera seems to have gone down even with the 720p Video Recording the KM900 has the pics and video seem to be worse quality to KU990 have also noticed the last week the phone restarts while im using it and also freezes alot so am trying to get rid of my new LG KM900 Arena dont have my old KU990 as i sold it prior to getting the KM900 :-(

Ive had my for a few weeks now and found that once you went on the LG web site and upgraded the phone most of the faults mentioned here were fixed and as a added bonus there were more games on the phone. Make sure you have some spare time as it took me over a hour to do. The only thing I cant do is connect to the web with wifi it always wont's to use Telstra's service which costs to much, if anyone has some thought on how to fix that please let me know. All in all very happy with the phone.

hi guys, just thought i'd give you a rundown of my experience with this phone, which i've now been using since early august; the first mistake i made was back then when i was looking to buy my first "smartphone", was to compare every phone on specs with the iphone, as i am an ardent apple hater(!); the second mistake i made was not researching the GC900 on youtube(!), which even back in august had plenty of material for me to go through! anyway, i bought the phone and equipped it with a 16GB microSD card and dumped coupple of hundret songs, almost 10000 picture-files and a few dozen movie files on it! ... and that's where the trouble began: the filesystem can't handle that many files! it is so bad now, that every time i take a picture with this phone, i have to plug it into a pc in order to view it, because it simply can't "see" it! forget about just dumping your movie-collection onto this phone, as you first have to convert it using the supplied divx-converter in order for it to be able to play, and then only at the lowest (and most rediculous) resolution on offer to play back on a device with a supposed 480 x 800 resolution! but what annoyes me the most is that when you download and install application or games, and they need file-access, expect to be asked EVERY time for EVERY file-access for permissions! and this is just not good enough! i am a user, and i paid for the damn thing, the least it can do for me is let me use it the way i want to use it, without the crappy big-brother control-freak attitude! don't think this nonsens is fixed with any of the availble rom-flashes (and none are available through LG directly - odd?)! alright, let's get to the "speed" of the device: it feels like 200mhz device, is laggy as hell, and file-access (for the files it can "see", anyway) is atrociously slow! people, save your money and buy something else! if you want a REAL gadget, spend the extra and have a look at the HTC HD2, cause that's what i am getting in a coupple of days (it's on it's way ... hooray!) however, if all you need is a smartphone check out some of those 'iphone-clones' ($50-$150) from china, they're certainly better than any offerings from LG!

Hi Rob, just to let you know if no one has pointed it out to you yet, contacts can be edited after you have added them. To do so, tap on the contact name you wish to edit then under the number is a few options. There will be voice call, send message and video call. Press and hold the video call while sliding your finger to the left. It will open a few more options including the edit option. This will be the exact same to forward a message. Open up the message then press and hold the options on the bottom and slide to the left. The phone is a capacitive touch screen instead of a resistive touch screen. If you wanted a phone that could use a stylus, you should have done some research first as a resistive touch screen will allow you to use a stylus. Just a little reminder on the side, a phone camera can only do so much so don't expect it to be able to do everything. If you wanted to be able to zoom in HD video, you should buy a real camera. As for your tom tom, I would suggest doing some research again on the phone you wish to buy before you buy it. Applications will be hard to find for the phone because it is still fairly new. It has only been out for 7 months. If you want a phone with a lot of downloadable apps available find a phone that has been out for some time longer. That will also solve your research issues as there would already be a lot of information out on it. I have to agree with you about the phone lag when you take a picture though. It is disappointing about how long it takes to actually take a picture. I hope I answered some of your questions, but you really can't be allowed to be disappointed with a phone you buy when you fail to find out about the phone before you buy it. If you don't do the research, you have to leave yourself available for disapointment.

The problem is the proximity sensor. Basically it has been configured incorrectly, that's why it fails to detect when it's near the ear or at viewpoint. Do the following carefully, but be warned, this is offered without warranty. 1. On the phone keypad enter the following code: 1809#*900# to bring up the engineering settings menu. 2. Scroll down to the entry called OTHERS and select it. 3. Scroll down this menu to the entry called PROXIMITY and select it. 4. You should see three options: Enable, Disable & Start Calibration 5. Select Start Calibration - after a few seconds it will return a new figure (mine was 3627) 6. BACK right out of the menu system, and make a test call - it should blank the screen when you hold it to your ear (or when you hold a finger near the sensor), but come back on again when you remove it. THIS SHOULD FIX IT! All the best.

hey mate hope you worked out how 2 edit contacts , it toook me a while to work out, at the botom of the contact is a slidabe bar defult it says "voice call, send message or video call" if you slide this bar left it will have further buttons, "send busness card, edit change location and delete, hope this helps someone :)

cant edit contacts, i use fully all the info you can add...email address, home address, more than one phone number ect. but if you have a customer or friend that changes thier number you cannot edit it. this is a head ache if you are on-site eg. at work..i am a self employed plumber...YOU HAVE TO ERASE ALL INFO about the contact ( wipe them from the list ) and re-insert all the old data. try doing this during a call!!. there is no zoom when in high def video you cannot foward a simple message the screen does not like anti-scratch screen covers as it is heat sensitive not a true touch screen it is a bit hard to use with bigger fingers-you cant use a stylus. it will not fully connect to my tom-tom sat nav my last phone -bluetooth fine-wireless link-non existant( lg ku990 ) did all this. there is no app for facebook! hard to find new apps if any-that work ok big lag when you wish to take a candid photo...about 5-8 seconds..phones4u told me it was a faster phone ( via the software ) but i am not convinced myself. its a nice phone but it lacks a fast 'brain'

Some seem to have solved the problem by removing screen protectors, but this didn't work for me. I sent the first phone back for a replacement - but this was just as bad. The following procedure worked for me, but it's potentially dangerous, and could ruin your phone if you're not careful - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! 1. I have bought my phone on 6th October 09 and I am unable to answer any calls when the phone rings! It just blank off with the buzzer ringing.... till it ends or 2 options, 1st click, stop ringing tone or click again, reject call. Anyone experience it? the problem is caused by the proximity sensor (sensor located next to the small camera for video calling). You have two options: 1. take the screen protector off, or cut top right-hand corner of the screen protector so that it will not cover the proximity sensor 2. reconfigure the sensitivity of the sensor by following K's guide (you will find it either in this or previous page) All the best :)

I am generally a loyal fan of LG products, but for the benefit of the consumers like myself, I would say there are (Much) better phones out there. I've had this phone for few months & I did indeed replace it with N97. The problems I had: notorious blank screen when calling (which I fixed using the post below) music player & interface - poor response when over a GB of memory is in use & screen freezes (UI unable to handle it quick enough) 8MP camera is poor - as cameraphone users will know that for phones, the number of MP does not determine the quality of the pictures (NOT AT ALL!) so don't be fooled, for example, I would say LG Prada 2MP camera performs 100x better than LG Viewty Smart. And the 5MP of N97 without doubt is superior. As I intend to take many pictures & listen to music, so multitasking is important - best bet is the Nokia N-Series. Seriously though, if you could spend bit more money, I advise you to get Nokia N-series, and not Samsung nor LG touchscreens. Though on the plus side, for its class (upper-middle class) phones, this phones is not bad at all! One thing to note about N97 & LG Viewty Smart - the screen resolution of LG definitely beats that of N97, though the screensize is just amazing on the N97!

Scroll down to the entry called OTHERS and select it. 3. Scroll down this menu to the entry called PROXIMITY and select it. 4. You should see three options: Enable, Disable & Start Calibration 5. Select Start Calibration - after a few seconds it will return a new figure (mine was 3627) 6. BACK right out of the menu system, and make a test call - it should blank the screen when you hold it to your ear (or when you hold a finger near the sensor), but come back on again when you remove it. THIS SHOULD FIX IT! All the best.

Hi Toots, there is no problem with the phone remove your screen protector if you have it on the phone. Normally this things happen when sensor on the top side of the phone get blocked. By Removing the screen protector which may be sticking on top of the sensor will solve the problem.

I have just got the LG GC900 Viewty Smart on contact, and this is the first day i have used it - i have also had problems when making or receiving a call the screen just goes blank and theres no buttons i can press to accept a call (I cant even see who is calling)- the only function i can use is the bottom power button to end it. Can u seek within audio tracks? I need my next phone to function like an iPod. Mainly for Audio books. I almost bought the Arena until I read acomment here that u can't seek within tracks! Thanks for getting back to me. Soon after i ask for help i have discover similar to what you are saying, but without actually getting into the software. Let say i am making a call and it require the keypad during the call.. When the blank screen appear, i wiped the proximity sensor area and everything re-appear, how long will it last who know. But thanks i will keep your suggestion if the simple solution no longer work. To me is a very DUMB design, this phone got good feature but if the simple thing of making/receiving a call is a PAIN, is not worth it. Unfortunately i bought mine in HK but iam in Canada.Thanks for your help!

I had the Viewty smart, there is a light sensor on it that is defective. I took mine back and was given another handset, this one did exactly the same, so I called LG direct and they said they had received a high number of calls about this problem. It will work fine in a brightly lit room. I took my 2nd handset back and demanded a phone that I could rely on. I now have the Samsung Jet and it works fine, I haven't had any problems with it at all.

My only complaint is that I can not find an English, German, or Spanish language User's Guide. (I have the Traditional Chinese language User's guide but find Chinese a poor technical language which is why the People's Republic of China recommends its Engineers learn German and/or English.) Anyway, despite the fact that I am a long time Apple fan, I found this hardware to be a better choice for my needs. So far, the phone has been the best phone I have ever owned. I am very pleased with it's performance.

Best D1? The Samsung Omnia HD which is above D1 spec at 1280 x 720. That said, if you want a really good mobile that does great video recording and video playback its the Renoir that has the best all round performance.

The PC Suite asked me to UNINSTALL the software that came with the phone and download a new one. Even after that, nothing changed. Don't waste your money on this 'phoney'

720 pixels by 480 lines is basically NTSC which is the TV standard for North America and several Asian countries. Frame rate is 29.997 (or 30 frames per second). In Europe its 720 pixels by 576 lines which is PAL, which is also used in other countries like Australia. Both are 4:3 aspect ratio, so when played on a 16:9 aspect ratio TV you will get left and right vertical bars -------------------------- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4:3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------- The above (basic) diagram is 4:3 aspect ratio. The original Viewty and Renoir can record in 16:9 widesceen aspect ratio. ----------------------------------------- - - - - - - - 16:9 - - - - - - - ----------------------------------------- The Viewty Smart and Arena and the Crystal (and throw in the Prada II) can't record in 16:9 aspect ratio as there is no setting for it. I hope this answer explains it for you.

Yes, you can either arrange the icons in list form or scroll bar form. However, you cannot chance the pictures of the icons. You can choose what to add on the Homescreen Menu though.

No since its a capacitive tempered glass screen. There is no handwriting recognition software built into the firmware. The LG Crystal does have handwriting recognition software built in but its limited. LG could go back to a resistive screen, but the problem is well know as scratches to easily, finger print problem and in general does not last as long as a tempered glass screen does.

Here are some facts for all you Viewty Smart owners and potential buyers: Video Playback Performance: The Viewty Smart video playback performance is as follows: 1: DivX playback is limited to 352x288 30frames per second. Essentially that means the playback specification is PAL TV standard. Audio has to be encoded either with MP3 codec or AAC codec, it will not playback if the audio has been encoded with WAV (analogue) or eAAC (encrypted). That said, if the audio has been encoded using AMR (adaptive multi-rate) it will work (but the audio quality is poor at best) It will not playback DivX videos that were recorded for example with thew original Viewty in either 400x240 (widescreen), 640x480 (4:3 centre cut) or 640x384 (widescreen). It will playback MPEG4 encoded videos up to 720x480 30 frames per second. It should also be noted that 720x480 30frames per second is essentially NTSC TV standard (D1? please LOL) Audio has to be encoded either with MP3 codec or AAC codec, it will not playback if the audio has been encoded with WAV (analogue) or eAAC (encrypted). That said, if the audio has been encoded using AMR (adaptive multi-rate) it will work (but the audio quality is poor at best. So if you want to upload a DivX video, unless its 352x288 or lower resolution it will not play. You are best off using video editing tools and changing the DivX video to MPEG4 profile version. It will play any 3GP video file provided the audio has been encoded either with AMR (which is the 3GP standard audio codec), MP3 or AAC but not eAAC (encrypted). ---------------------------------------------- Video Recording Performance: Huge let down here, LG have gone backwards from the Viewty and the Renoir in terms of video recording performance. The Viewty and Renoir recorded videos using DivX codec and MP3 audio codec, also you had the option to record in two widescreen resolutions like standard 400x240 30frames per second or 640x384 30 frames per second. No such luck with the Viewty Smart (and Arena for that matter). While 3GP is a form of MPEG4, its the lowest grade codec standard. At best the Viewty Smart records video at 720x480 30 frames per second (again this is NTSC TV standard), however the all important bit rate is low, to low really at just 2000kbps (2mbps) and the 3GP codec is no where near as good as propper MPEG4 or DivX codec standard. The Viewty and Renoir for example had bit rate of 2.7mbps (2,700kpbs). Also no true widescreen recording capture, basically there is no 16:9 format, however 720x480 is considered as 14:9 but still not good enough. Audio is limited to AAC (Advanced Audio Codec), 64kbps single channel (so duel channel is split to 32kbps per channel) on the 22.5khz carrier (bandwidth). There is no option for noise free microphone (that said the Viewty did not have that either but the Renoir does). As I said above, this is a huge let down for LG, they have gone backwards when you consider just how good the Viewty and Renoir record video. ------------------------------------------------­-- Photo Camera Performance: Way better than the Viewty (KU990), and slightly ahead of the Renoir (faster and nicer interface) but we have seen this before in the KC910i (Renoir II). That said, everyone should be happy with the Viewty Smart camera performance overall. ------------------------------------------------­----- User Interface: Thumbs up for S-Class, while its the same S-Class interface of the LG Arena, its a lot faster (probably use to the AMD chip and extra internal ram) and the capacitive tempered glass screen is also more fluid in general use over the Arena. ------------------------------------------------­----- Battery Performance: This depends on a lot of things like if your handset is constantly in HSDPA mode, length of made or received calls, how much media is media used ect ... I find that 2 days before a recharge is very good when you consider the amount of use I out the Viewty Smart through, its just a matter of find tuning what you want the handset to do and it will last, example with the Viewty I could get 4 days of use, with the Renoir 3 days, so 2 days of use and when you consider that this uses S-Class interface over what was just simple flash based interface its doing well. ------------------------------------------------­----- The other thing I will comment about it Wi-Fi performance. Its been vastly improved over the Renoir, yes you can stram Youtube (all be it the mobile version which means RTSP (real time streaming protocol) 3GP videos, but still it can be done (hell I can do that with the Renoir, if only people would read the manuals in order to learn how to make a streaming Wi-Fi profile). The Wi-Fi is about as good as Nokia. ------------------------------------------------­----- Overall ? While its an improvment over the LG KU990 (Viewty) and the 3 Mobile version U990 (3 Mobile Viewty) in terms of interface and camera capture performance, video recording is a huge let down. That said, I will recomend this handset and give it 7 out of 10, where as the Viewty and Renoir both got 8 due to the best video recording ability of any phone on the market at time of release. Enjoy.

Viewty Smart like I-Phone uses proximity sensor to conserve battery life. So when a finger is close to the proximity sensor, the screen goes blank. Proximity sensor is located at the front top of the phone.

Had the phone for a week now and I can find very little wrong with it. I thought I was mad going for it as I've had five original Viewtys as they were the worst phone ever designed. This new one hits the spot though being plenty techy but really easy to use. It has every nice touch and feature you thought you might need or want. Only down side is still the ease texting but that's because it's touch screen!

Have you used any screen protector ??? If yes, please removed that ... your phone will be alright. What happens when you use the protector, it does set off the proximity sensor and the screen turns off, whenever any calls made / received.

The screen going blank during calls im pretty sure is because when you put it to your head the proximity sensor is set off and the screen turns off because once the phone is at your ear it has no need in being active. I've not had any problems with the black screen remaining. Only qualms I have with this phone is that the T9 seems more restrictive than in its predecessor (my last phone was the viewty). And I wish you could just turn the light on as a torch but this seems to be a common problem with most phones these days. Otherwise, awesomeness galore =D

Apparantly with the screen going blank, if you remove all the protective films from the phone this resolves the issue as one of them prevents calls from being received. Can anyone let me know if this works?

The Viewty smart is incompatable with o2, they dont have the appropriate setting for it. I had to go through 5 phones - the screen would go blank when i got a call and couldn't answer it! It is only officially launched through Orange.

I think this phone is brilliant! I got it yesterday and i already love it. The only thing i not sure about is there are no games, and i finding it impossible to find out how to download them as the manual tells you to do it one way, but when you do it, it doesnt do what it says it is supposed to. The keypad on the text messages takes a little while to get used to as well. But other than that, i would definately 100% recommend this phone.

until the viewty smart gets a full release review it seems the main difference between the arena and viewty smart is that the viewty smart has a superior camera. The arena has an fm transmitter but the loss of that is of no real consequence. The Viewty smart has less internal memory but if you pack in a 16gb card or even a 32gb card (when they're available) its all pretty much the same. Really the difference is will you pay a bit extra for a better camera

From what I can gather from my friend who works in LG Europe, the Viewty Smart's shutter speed and time required for saving image files is actuall eons faster than the Renoir. That was the only gripe I had with camera phones, but if imaging speed is now as good as a compact digital camera, consider me sold.

I was going to buy that phone but after that preview i am not so sure . It does not play all the media files like the Renoir and it doesn't have xenon . The video quality isn't so impressive and the only advantage that it have is the new 3D interface . Someone might say that LG may improve the media Files with a update later but nothing is so sure yet . Also the Viewty 2 is going to be more expensive than the Renoir 910i After that preview i want to ask everyone . Is it going to worth waiting for that phone , is the new 3D software worth so much or buying the improved Renoir 910i in a lower price is a better thing to do Thanks

In answer to your question java is a very underestimated way of powering devices such as there fabulous multimedia devices. Unless you specifically require to be constantly adding third party applications to a mobile java is more than adequate and some would argue is more stable at times. You can of course add java apps like the outstanding opera mini browser. This device although not running on a more familiar os will probably be as home he not superior to a other smart phones. Just look at the specifications on it! This proves that the difference between a smart phone running windows, etc, and other types of phones including java powered devices is now practically non-existent.

As lonng as the standby time is over 300 hours that will last you all day, with heavy use. But all phones vary, i would say this battery life is great. since its past the 300 bench mark for me.

Camera in Renoir is good but interface is disappointing. In Arena interface is good but camera disappointing. Looks like Viewty Smart will get the best of the two phones, with good interface and good camera. Can't wait to see if it is better than my Pixon !

16mp camera phone can't match a digicam? I doubt it. The same old logic again, can you use a digicam to call someone? can you listen to mp3 with digicam? can you watch movie or play game with digicam? This phone can do all of above plus take photo and video. Maybe you like to carry your digicam to everywhere anytime. But i believe there a a lots other people who prefer to just bring their camera phone around instead of carrying a 16mps digicam all the time to everywhere.

haha no offense but where do you get this formula or what you call it.. Lg 8mp = samsung 5mp = se 5mp ?? I own a 8mps Samsung phone and a 8mps LG phone before and my housemate own a 8.1mps SE phone. I can say all three phone provide different quality photos no doubt. But there are definitely at different class if compare to 5mps camera phone's quality.

Probably the best camera phone after Samsung Omnia HD. But as none of them has been released, just wait and see. Great specs are not everything, everyday usage is what matters. And LG is still new to mobile phones, though learning fast! I prefer waiting for people to try this phone and give their opinion.

jeezzzz when are you people going to learn that mpx = size not quality !! you can put 100000 mpx if you want but it's going to be slow,less lite is going to enter (denser pix ) and the worst part is that if u zoom in you get nothing more than a smushi pict ... important - sensor size, lens , electronics , .... mpx is dependent on the quality of the lens and of the sensor for ex: i have a 70-200 f2.8L IS lens (canon) witch is worth about 1700$ , weights about 2Kg and it can't rezolve the 20+ mpx of the 5d (maybe at 135mm, not sure ) and the camera is already shooing limitations in regards to detail/sharpness even with a 85mm 1.2 lens witch is one of the best 35mm lenses out there stop buying market shit. you don't need more than 2-3 mpx (and you need that in case of a 24-30 inch monitor (24 inch = 1920x1200=2 mpx, 30 inch 2560x1600=4 mpx ) in many cases (compact,bridge,phones ) more mpx is actually a bat thing... less light enters,more time from pict to pict, less resolving power,less detail becouse of nr .....

This is a great effort by LG and they should be initially rewarded by good sales volume. Some ideas for improvement include: I agree that there is too much wasted space on the front, dimensions should be no larger than 85 x 54 x 12 mm (This is width and height of a credit card, and a 12mm thickness is the most you want for a pocket), no 3.5 mm audio jack is also poor design, Much more thought needs to be given to included/downloadable apps. The reason the iPhone does so well is because of the great number of apps it has (my choice would be to use their compiler so you could use all the iPhone apps on this phone).
