Motorola DEFY XT XT556 - User Reviews

  • Ive tried to add a service card to mine after a few days of letting it go over the end date, I tried to add the card via wifi internet on the phone, at first it wasn't going through then it said the service card was already in use meaning it worked, it said I had the 3G in the top right corner but then it went away and now it's saying I have an end date on july 29th but it's still not working!! any suggestions??

  • I've had this phone for over two years. It's been beaten pretty bad, used in the rain, used in the snow, dropped in a puddle, and has held up (probably luck it didn't land squarely on the screen or corner each time it was dropped). Overall, the phone is a middle of the pack phone. Nothing really stands out on it - good or bad. It's best described as "standard". However, it does all the functions. Highlights are easy to use, the vibration isn't weak when pushing buttons, and the screen is accurate when pushing icons and buttons. The big drawbacks are lack of internal storage space, the large pre-installed and unremovable apps like facebook, and the battery isn't as strong as it should be - if used for surfing or navigation it seems like the battery only lasts a couple of hours. Overall, I'd give this phone a 7 out of 10. It's price makes it a fiscally responsible choice for those on a budget that still want something functional.

  • I have had this phone for 3 months and I HATE it. It has almost no storage and the SD card doesn't help because hardly any apps go onto it! With Facebook and Google Play Services preinstalled on it, they take up pretty much all of the storage on the phone. For like a month now it acts as if it is possessed by an evil demon. It will type stuff by itself, tap things by itself, and scroll to the side sometimes (by itself). The only solution I could find to this problem would be to turn it off then back on again (and sometimes even that doesn't help). And if I were to shut it down, when I would turn it back on, the evil demon like actions would become unbearable. When I first got the phone, it was fine, but after a month this started to happen. For a bit of time there was a part of the phone which wouldn't even work! I would tap there and it would either click the thing above or below it instead of where I tapped. I do NOT recommend this phone.

  • I had this phone for a month. Screen cracked in the cold. Earphone jack doesn't act right it almost always thinks there's a headphone jacked in which makes calls only workable when I have phone on speaker but it won't pick up The mic when I have the headphones in. I lost the receipt and Walmart people won't help me return it. Junk. Way too expensive for the dumb problems I've had so far. A $30 phone worked better before.

  • I have had this phone for a year and a half now, and it still works great! It is still relatively fast, and with rooting I have no app size limitations. Even though I have never put a screen protector on it, it only has one scratch which was my fault for bringing it along to some sand dunes. Overall, I think it's small size and great battery life and performance for it's age make it a great older smartphone.

  • piece of shit, I've had it for 3 weeks, and now the touch screen is completly unresponsive.

  • Mine has only ever given me a overheat warning once. It was pretty random just a month or so back. Have had the phone for a couple years and never had it happen before or since. Aside from that it gets a little warm sometimes but nothing worth worrying over. Not a very great phone but for the price it's been amazinly efficient and durable .

  • im getting one on friday is it a good phone

  • I ran mine over with a tractor trailer and it still worked

  • Best damn phone on the planet

  • I had this problem. I've figured out that, for one reason or another, you simply need to make sure that you scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BOTTOM of the new contact menu once you input the contact data. Why, I don't know, but this has worked every time since I figured it out.

  • Its okay. I lost all my pictures because the sd card "was full". One minute, i have 65 minutes of recording time and 245pictures remaining. The next , even if you don't take a picture, the sd card is full. The memory is always full even if you only have one app. Water resistant. Dust proof.

  • Im getting the phone and im wondering what it's like

  • My charging port came out after one month

  • I have a Motorola defy xt. For the most part I like it. Main reason for not liking it. Very low memory or storage area. I.E. I get a new number from somebody I want to save in phone, it takes you through the steps to do it. But, when you check in your contacts or call log, nothing. How do I fix this??

  • I am using this phone since more than a year. It is very rugged phone. Most of the people here commented on various aspects of the phone. Main issue with this phone is "Signal reception". Not able to gain the signal, once it is lost due to any reasons (like passing through low signal zone, restarting the phone, may be in the lift or so on). I have compared this phone with various other phones in the weak signal areas and found that other phone are able to pick the signal very fast and my Motorola defy xt takes a lot to become normal. This is one of the main reason, I am planning to change this phone. It becomes useless for couple of minutes (some times up to 10 minutes) once signal lost occurs. This phone can not be trusted during any emergency. Other things are good and manageable as compared to other high end phones. It seems that signal reception problem is in the system design itself. May be this low signal issues are not common in the western countries.

  • Try shutting down any running apps that might be raising the temperature of your device above ambient before you charge it.

  • how did you get such a long battery life?! been off the charger for less than an hour and already down to 90 percent and only texted a few messages....

  • I have the Motorola DEFY XT and it will not work with any Mini-SIM, Rating 3/10

  • That is why you escalate the issue, or take it to whatever government agency handles trading malpractices in your country. If what you said is correct, and it hasnt been broken due to mishandling (ie, getting yanked sideways causing the port to break. At worst it would be able to be repaired by them, most likely they will fix under warranty just to keep you happy **If you actually complain properly**

  • My phone does not heat up. I like it.

  • I own the Motorola Defy XT and sometimes my phone will get so hot it will stop charging. A little thermometer pops up in my notification bar and says "Temperature out of range. Charging stopped."

  • do not buy my charging port came out after 4 months !! bad costomer service will not replace no refund under 12 month warranty and they do nothing

  • Not happy with motorola costomer service, phone charging hole broke after 4 months of use called motorola only to hear it was because of "careless use", bulshit company DO NOT BUY never buying again from motorola, even under warenty they said the are not fixing it.....

  • How does this phone work with outlook email and contacts automatic download or syncing?

  • The thing that frustrates me about the phone the most is I travel a mountain to work each day. My 39.99 previous phone did NOT lose service on the mountain but this phone does. So if my car would break down or God forbid get into an accident I would be stuck. I called and told them my concern and the response was it's the technology in the phone and nothing they could do. :(

  • Don't buy had 2 of them for my kids both of the charger inputs came out after 5 months

  • I really like this phone, was thinking of buying it. I love all the feat. is has, but someone posted a comment about it heating up (which is the problem I have with my Samsung galaxy proclaim) if someone, anyone that has this phone could help me out, I would really love it!!!! pleaseeeee message me [email protected] thank you

  • I have an defy xt 556 phone on one occasion the phone heated up so much that you could hardly hold it in your hands. Took it back to supplier who sent it away for repair and checking. On returned it last about 1.5 hrs and it did the same thing again returned it to supplier and asked for new phone but no they are sending it back for repairs. To me this is totally unsatisfactory as I have lost faith in the phone what would happen if it heated up while sitting on paper and I was away.Ask yourself.

  • Phones are made in China, that's just how it is.

  • this phone is great for tex and internet but not for talking. needs a lot of improvement and is maid in china.Would not last long. this phone should be worth $50.00 the most.

  • i have had the phone since the end of summer 2012, over all i like the phone but there is a few things i dont like about it, the main screen that first comes up to unlock the phone has the volume in the upper right corner, if you dont pay attention you can mute the ringer, i do this often and get many missed calls " this gets my boss alittle upset" . another thind is the internal memory isnt alot, although you can save apps to an micro sd card not all apps can be saved to the card, internal memory fills up quick, over all im happy with the phone but than again this is my first ever smart phone so im still learning

  • This phone sucks i love everything about it, but i live in a rural Area and service is worse than spotty! I havent gotten more than 2 bars since i got it. Straight talk customer support is worse than any thing i have seen. i clocked in 49 minutes between waiting and not getting my answer answered:( ***buyer's beware! Stay away from straight talk **** ×_×

  • I really love my defy. I had a iphone 3gs and this phone really outshines it. Seems to run smoother and faster than the 3gs did. Really loving the phone

  • Hello Everyone, here's a quick review. a lot of people have said a lot of things about this phone.some of them are true but most of them are not. The battery life, the most important thing, is very decent.I was able to get more than a day and a half after listening to music for about 3 hrs, playing games for about an hour, using network data and also connecting to wifi for quite a long time. its water resistant but after you drop it in water, you will have to take the back cover off and wipe off any drops of water (if u find any).the speaker will sound bad after you drop it into water but it will be okay soon. Screen has very good resolution, you will notice that when you are playing games.I have used a razr XT910 earlier but even then, I do not have anything to complain about Defy's display. The hardware; it has got something close to 400 mb that's user available.that's not very good but it is very sufficient if you don't install a lot of games.also, Installing app2sd will help you save memory. the processor, 1gHz is very good.a lot of people have complained that it lags but I've been using this one since 4 months and I didn't face any problems.I even have some good games which I can play without any problems. The camera is not very good compared it its rivals but then, its Good enough for day time usage and the front camera is good as well.there is not physical camera button so you may not find it very convenient. Overall, A good phone and if you think you are getting a good bargain, Do not hesitate. Hope I was helpful. Thanks

  • I was very excited to see a new Defy on the market..THIS PHONE IS HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.. the camera is worthless, memory is weak.. i understand that its a cheap phone, but it at least should be an improvement to the 2011/12 model

  • yeah you can use skype ,g talk and lot of applications on defy xt

  • i don know about this phone much,, all i know is that it is a CDMA phone and DEFY+ is GSM .. this is why i believe defy+ sells in more numbers.. pls compare to other phones before buying.. but i can surely say defy+ is good buy.. only shotcming is no ICS update..

  • Hey friends please suggest me, should I go for Defy XT or Defy +??? coz in India I am getting both of them at nearly same price. I m confused coz Defy XT has better ratings on GSMArena but Defy + is out of stock everywhere (it is more in demand)..any suggestions r welcome..Thanks in advance

  • I want to buy this phone because can protect from water and enough sreen for me 3. 7'' but i want from the user this phone . Can we use skype and video call buy this phone ? For camera and version i don't mind . Please some one do me fever a bout skype of this mobile.

  • It may be a good phone but i don't like it becoz of it's responsive lag.lot of times frogen competely while browsing on dolphin browser.bad usability, touch, bad quality sound o/p,less volume.it has good backup, resolution, rest all not as expected. Bought for 16.3K in reliance digital india,no ICS,not worth.

  • i want to know about the battery ´cause my battery is fatty and i don´t know why...can i change it?

  • Guys plz tell about its battery back up???

  • You can get a Neo L, it is way better and has ICS.

  • I strictly agree with you., :) ;)

  • is this phone available for android 4.0 updation

  • I'm seriously considering purhcasing this phone. I like the front-facing camera, the supposed long battery life, and the durability. I just want to know if this phone is all it's cracked up to be.

  • I recently purchase this mobile phone i am not being able to connet to proxy server through wifi and by the way all the feathers are awsome i really love this phone

  • I have network issue with defy XT535. I often encounter intermittent connection with my phone network and data network. IS this a software issue or hardware? Check with operator and its okay. even change sim card.

  • Hi, The front speaker it is in fact a microphone for calls. It does not have any sound coming out from it.

  • yes u can

  • this is so nice!!! everything about it is cool, i wish i had one but cant afford it. ow soo sad!!!

  • please kindly can u tell me....did u got an official update from motorola??? so will the indian defy xt or defy plus will get the ICS update any idea??

  • Super AMOLED is not everything. This phone has 265ppi, a resolution almost indistinguishable from the SIII to the naked eye. And I've compared the colors on the SIII with this phone. The colors are much more natural than the SIII's high saturation. In fact, this is probably one of the best screens I've seen. And a major plus of this phone is the front speaker, just below the navigation buttons. The sound is great compared with other phones.

  • Yes. ICS is available in China. The stock launcher is really slow, especially when flicking the home screen. After replacing with ICS and installing LauncherPro (this is indeed the smoothest launcher for Home screen) and Organized Drawer (LauncherPro's drawer is slow), the phone is smooth as butter, even with only a single 1Ghz processor. Really happy with it, considering its price point.

  • is it true that dis phone got ICS in china????????

  • Hold up and down sound key while switching on the phone, It will automatically reach in safe mode. You can see that annotation on screen with name "Safe Mode".

  • It's a mid entry level phone you bafoon!

  • Poor try, absolutely nothing new, even worse than the original Defy on paper. No 4", no AMOLED, no 1 GB RAM, no dual core, no ICS or JB, no 8 MP, no 4G. Its worthless.

  • Guys please tell if you know how to go to safe mode manualy

  • this phone is possible to upgrade

  • Go for Sony Xperia Arco S :)

  • this is gsmarena and this phone is gsm :

  • lol . this phone is gsm and all use it in india and this phone can update to android 4 .

  • If the name of this site is G S M Arena, i don't know why always we have to see here models like this, that aren't GSM devices!!!! Very disgusting

  • Good consept but needs alot of work on to 3rd 1 in less than 2 months i keep needing to send them back first 1 had freeze up issiues and got dust under screen and nxt 2 have had dust under the screen not xceptable for a dust proof phone after giving them 3 chances im giving up just too much hassel and shame on you motorola for making claims that your products can not back

  • the phone got ics in china...ics comming to all countries by oct 2012....xt roks

  • some ppl say that its response lags a bit sometimes due to 1ghz processor ,so tell me should i buy this phone or what?

  • One phone company charges $249 for this but that seems high to me considering hardly any ROM or RAM and relatively slow. One person on another blog claimed his froze up a lot.

  • This is one of the good Smartphones. It comes with FM radio as well. But I'm not happy with the processor speed. It should be at least 1.5. Thank you GSMArena and Motoask for the full specs of the phone. I have wasted more than an hour to search this in other sites. Kate

  • how about motoswich ui in this phone ?

  • I just want a really high ends waterproof phone with a HD display and HDMI out for watching videos or underwater adventures later on a tv. Is that too much to ask?

  • I just want a really high ends waterproof phone with a HD display and HDMI out for watching videos or underwater adventures later on a tv. Is that too much to ask?

  • very good disply and camera is also good

  • IS this phone good for gaming??? does all the HD games works without lag???

  • I have been using this phone since a month and its a pretty decent phone in this price range. Battery is also good and lasts me 2.5 days with decent usage of 3G and heavy gaming. pretty sleek when compared to samsung ace's, and handy to hold. over all i would give it a 8/10 in this price point.

  • hey guys . is thie model have motoswich ui ?! and how about display and camera ? anybody use this phone

  • i realy like this phone ! i hope buy it one day . but ! why moto dont use 8mp camera in this phone ?

  • The Indian version of this phone has GSM not CDMA. You can check

  • very good phone in 15000 good battery life nice browsing speed

  • Actually, it IS CDMA. It is available directly from Republic Wireless, a service that utilizes Sprint's CDMA network (besides using WiFi to carry most calls AND data, interesting concept).

  • so you mean, while on video chat like skype, you'll still use the back camera and not the front?

  • the front facing camera does, i just used it to skype. :)

  • in defy xt video call not support front facingcamera is used for video chat like skype..

  • Well, actually both Defy+ and Defy XT use a 3,7" screen.

  • its a rugged phone....

  • should I remind everybody that this is a cheap CDMA phone for a small US market. No one complains that there is an Xperia S, L, X, H or whatever letter for each different carrier/country, or millions of Galaxys, but Motorola releases a CDMA version of the Defy and you complain. Really sad.

  • So, the only thing changed from Defy+ is the 3.7" display, secondary camera(finally you can do video call), the SMALLER battery, and last but not least the uglier look. In other words, no thanks!!!

  • 1 year and a half late on this one ! What is Motorola planing on ?
