The ZN5 is a lot better, because it has more modding, a better camera software, xenon flash, internal memory, etc. But personally i prefer another phone. Motolinux is a dead os, and without support.

I love this phone!! Camera is great outdoors but terrible indoors though. Call quality is perfect, and service is better than other phones in the household. Rugged Motorola quality, I've dropped it several times (carry case unsnapped without knowing) and no problems other than trim blemishes. Had Motorola phones for years, switched breifly but back now. This is my best one yet!

jamal, to set internet go to I found this link when I was trying to get my internet going on my VE66. It is free from motorola. They will send you a message to set internet, wap and mms settings. You just need to select your phone, carrier and country. If you want to check email be sure to check the email box yes, under web sessions. You will recieve two messages, one will tell you your sim pin and the next click install to get your settings. Hope this helps.

GPRS doesn't work, it always show "the address is not available from this machine". I've checked it twice with my provider but still no changes. They even sent me new configuration settings. Is the place where i got this phone and where i am now is the reason why it doesn't work?

But then again Motorolas are hardly available these days so i was in need of a phone urgently so teh KP500 happend to be on my way. Nice good looking phone! The materials are excellent and if you´re looking for quality this the phone you should go for... No 3G for faster connections, and the screen could be a little larger like 2.4 inches...Otherwise excellent.

About comment that this phone is using open software: it's totally locked. It doesn't matter it runs Linux, only thing you can run on this model is Java. No possibilities for anything fancy like running Nintendo emulators and similar Linux native stuff. Ofcourse it is possible but blocked by Motorola and known hacks that work on other Linux based Motorolas don't work on VE66.

How can I TURN OFF the GPRS/EDGE, it is on stand by all the time and my battery is running low very fast. The other problem is that the phone loose signal very often for about 2 min. can that be fixed any way ??

Yes it's true... it's a bit slow in maneuver, but at this price it is a great deal, wi-fi ,wingjets ,great tst,very fast scroll (handy), camera it's more Vga then 5.0 Mpx :) but is a phone not a camera device. !! Have to understand ,this is a Linux based platform, an brave exercise from Motorola ,u can add many apps like Opera mini, GMaps ,etc . It's a open platform, a free one, try it before u buy it..may like a lot

ah I am using this phone for about 3 months now and I have to say I am very dissatisfied. Reason they put the 500 mhz CPU is only because anything less would not run terrible code of this phone. Yes it's based on Linux but is very slow. Overall I'm disappointed. I should have bought iPod Touch for that money and keep my old phone.

Forgot to write about the menu & software. Really annoying that jog doesn't work in some lists- sub menus and no matter the 500MHz processor typing is a little bit slow... but the worst remains the same: camera is a big disgrace for Motorola!!!

If you care about the camera it's the SE G900 for U. The g900 has even touch focus and S-E usually have good quality sensors & optics.

Pros:Nice look, clever lock top panel with side button, liked the radio function w/o the hands free (but better receive with the earphones /because cable works like an antenna). Clear sound on music & communication Small menu-easy to learn, Wi-Fi is good, bluetooth circuit is fast & good comm with BT headset. Cons:CAMERA REALLY SUCKS!!! I've never seen a worst image sensor than this! 5.0 MP? Maybe in your wildest dreams!!! Either you focus with the 2 stage shoot button or not, no image clarity at all. Worst than a medium 2MP sensor.Too much noise produced from sensor/shutter that gives you the feeling that pics were taken with an older 1.3MP sensor. Keyboard feeling/quality medium but ok.Jog and left-right buttons on top panel of phone too close and easy to make a false move. If you want a phone for quality sound,mp3 player with radio (RDS) and WiFi connectivity and don't care for camera it's ok to buy it.

It also comes with a wide variety of features ( Wi-Fi , 5mp Camera , mp3 , radio with rds , fast scroll and up to 32gb memory support ... ) Plus is newer then the Sony Ericsson ...

I have to agree with comment about the camera. Altough it is 5 mpx it is really, really horrible. I don't know whether it is its software that uses bad compression for JPG or hardware limitation but quality of pictures that are taken with that camera is only barely *tolerable* for sunny outdoor usage.

yes you can select any file from your phone memory or memory card to upload just as you would on your computer. This works both from Opera Mini and builtin browser. btw if you download any media file it will stream (you will be able to listen to music or watch video *while* it's still downloading)

I got this phone today and I have to say I am a bit deceived. This phone is great an all, radio, music, cool design, fast, wifi...etc... but the camera is HORRIBLE. It's worse than a 0.3 mp camera. To get my point check this review, the reviewer uploaded some pictures taken with the phone And the photos actually look worse... So yeah, don't get mislead by the "5.0 MP" because in this case it only stands by the size of the image, the quality is SHIT. All the other features of this phone are great.

It has an excellent sound quality. Multiple options for surround (I like Virtual Home Theater option best), equalizer, bass boost etc. Sound quality is a lot better than that of my MP3 player which I now stopped using :P

Yes you can watch youtube videos even without Opera mini on this phone (its built-in browser supports direct streaming from youtube mobile site) Also that way videos are in higher quality than with Opera mini.

I have this phone for 6 days. No problems, good battery life. The browser is symphony and its not good so i doawnloaded from www.mobileheart.com opera mini. wifi is conected very easy at hotspots.

Its a web fone i think. I dont think people really get this fone the idea is internet for those people not made of money. They give you wifi so since u have wifi, you pretty much dont need the 3g. Think about it, if you have wifi at work all day, then at home also, why pay more for 3g. Thats why the only shortcut button on it is for the web. Closest rival i would say is sony ericsson g705. You chose between 5mp camera and no 3g, or 3g and video calls, but a lame 3mp cam with no af. you decide.

Sorry for being out of the main topic, I also "keep" my E2, which still offers the best music (sound) as I know. Too silly to update the firmware, otherwise would really love to see my E2 using 8GB SD card for plenty of music. (actually 4GB is about enough for me for now)

@If VE66 offers 3.5mm jack, it would be in my pocket now. I think the same. Is beautiful - one of the sexiest slider on the market,well constructed (tipicaly for new Moto's), A+ camera , but lake 3 important things : 3,5mm jack output, 3G and a bigger screen (a camera phone needs at last 2,4" display - like Zn5).

In case some thinks I never criticize Moto... Understand VE66 in an all-in-one device. Meanwhile, keep in mind the Zn5 was supposed to be a "camera" phone, while it does provide a fairly decent music player (if EM35 gets A+, music player on Zn5 is around A or A-), through a 3.5mm jack. How difficult is it to dig a hole and put a 3.5mm jack into another Moto phone, if it can do that with Zn5, EM35, and even PDA based A3100, but not VE66? If VE66 offers 3.5mm jack, it would be in my pocket now. However, now I would "wait" til either my wife wants this instead of her K3 (which still works perfectly) or when price drops further (now costs US$300 where I live...) Or I'll get one towards the end of its production, just like Z6/U9 are being sold for around US$90/$100 where I live now...

Are you aware of any micro-USB -> 3.5mm adapter on the market? For music lovers, I would suggest the EM35...which runs practically the exact same software as VE66, only the outer design and cam are different. EM35 offers 3.5mm plug and some US$115 less than VE66 where I live. To be honest, if VE66 offers 3.5mm plug like my Zn5, I would probably have gotten one already.

Connector type doesn't affect the sound quality. Biggest advantage of 3,5mm jack is that you can easily change the stock headset with something much better in quality, like - Creative, Steel Series, Sennheiser or JVC. Also, using the 3,5mm is more practical and comfortable to insert and pull out, than doing the same thing with an USB connector.

I truly believe the Crystal talk 2 should definitely outperform the version 1 that I have on my E8 by certain margin. So far the version 1 already impressed me, my friends & relatives so the version 2 should be even better . If you've time to test out the 4 different settings in the future, it'll be interesting to see the effects on background noises. So far in my country, there's no indication on any new upcoming Motorola models that have Crystaltalk 2 (or Plus). You're luckier over there with wider choices and of course, with the variety of Moto phones you have collected, makes comparisons much easy. I'm happy for you friend.

haven't really tried that out, even though Crystal Talk 2 is available on my EM35, which comes with 4 settings: Bright, Crisp, Clear, Normal. I haven't tried different setting yet, I can certainly bet even at "normal" mode, the voice quality beats most other brands' offerings.

Moto has its own official online store in China, which you can get in via Moto dot com dot cn Of course one should shop in China with caution. For some reason when I logged into Moto's online store in China "from China", I had no problem and found things look rather "official". Someehow when I logged to the same website and clicked on the online store link "outside of China" (simply HK), I was led to another site which doesn't look official. Though various chain stores in HK are already carrying VE66.

VE66 easily beats the flagship of other brands on one simple aspect...Crystal Talk (II), which makes what a PHONE should be. A phone should be designed for CLEAR COMMUNICATION, everything else should be extra. If a phone can do everything else while can't even offer basic clear voice quality, such as unstable earpiece volume, capturing all the background noise so the person's own voice can't be heard, I don't see any of these phones should have rating for more than 5.

My V9 is overall a much better phone to use than my 8800 Arte...even though my Sapphire Arte cost me almost 5 times as much as the V9! Only drawback with the V9 is the battery; which does not last that long!...but my nokia 6500C is even worse - continues conversations can never last for more than an hour!!! Anyway, Nokia phones sucks - most of them overheat so badly during calls!

I haven't testing VE66, as VE66 is not (officially) available where I live. I do know VE66 costs some US$100 more than EM35 in mainland China, where both phones are available. I can't judge the music quality of VE66, I do know it "does not" have 3.5mm jack like EM35. So the choice narrows down to how often you take photos with your phone. To me, 99% of the time I take photos with my Canon G9, so I care little less about the camera quality on phones, as none can match with my G9 anytime soon... Indeed, I think I play music more often than taking photos with my Zn5. So you can consider whether or not if you want to spend US$100 for a better camera on a phone...which can never match the quality of a real camera. (while losing some music quality with the lack of 3.5mm jack)

as long as they could put all the 'spices' to their phones and make them better, theyll surely hit. that's what moto should deal with. it's not just the matter of inventing or creating and calling it your own, it's more of redefining your phone and setting it above the standard., & not just showcasing what they invented, but anticipating and counter-attacking what others are up to. like what happen to moto in the past, they've focus much with razr-V** family. it really hits in that time, but they lack the next thing after RAZR era ( as others at that time were already developing touch, widgets.., and the so called 'spices'),creating another trend so as consumers won't peek to other brands. the only good thing they did is to atleast develop more of those rokr's to sustain some old percentage in the market-share.

one the good side, moto seem to have lesser user-complaints and repairs v.s. other brands. nokia- heavily repaired all over the world, same with samsung. Only when ALL other manufacturers are still "struggling" to offer something like Moto's own Crystal Talk technology to improve voice quality, Moto already moved ahead with Crystal Talk 2. And was it around 2004/05 when Moto started to offer "USB charging" on its E680/V3? How many years have taken other makes to offer "USB charging"? I don't think such is anything really high tech, but certainly a very convenient feature for most who have a computer.

Probably not in terms of quality, as after 4 years after Moto released its first 3G touchscreen phone, the almighty brand finally developed its own...with plenty of units (where I live) with unstable earpiece volume. (sometimes loud and sometimes soft) The company admitted the problem and decided to refund to the customers. I haven't had any of such issue from the over 40 Moto phones I've used, including my latest A3100/EM35.

I respect those who have experienced problems with Moto phones and share their unpleasant experience here. We can notice the difference in voice quality only when we physically use both bar and flip Moto phones with Crystaltalk, the most obvious is always when we switch from one to another after using another Moto phone with Crystaltalk for sometime. Not to be mistaken, the bar design Moto phone with Crystaltalk is already good. I've read a review from a website (forgotten exactly which one) that said there's another phone model (not Moto) has good voice clarity too. I truly believe there are other phone models that could give good voice clarity BUT not background noise reduction AND voice amplifying effect like Moto's Crystaltalk at present. My questions are: 1. did they JUST test the voice quality by listening to the ear-to-phone speaker? 2. did they test by listening to the same (ear-to-phone) when one person is holding the Motorola phone with Crystaltalk at a noisy location on the other end? 3. did they compare with the Motorola's bar or flip design with Crystaltalk? These are the doubts I have after reading a review on one particular phone model (not a Moto model). Now with the ENHANCED Crystaltalk (I believe it's version 2) in the VE66 that comes with 2 microphones instead of one, the effect, in theory should be better. I can't wait to test it out personally. Motorola should come up and tell the world (again) that they are the first to introduce this technology before someone else comes up to "claim" that they are the first.

Thanks mate. I hope Moto will make good use of this present global crisis to prevail. With Sony cutting about 16,000 workers worldwide, whoever makes the right strategy in sales & marketing will turn the table around. While the non-Moto fans used to say Moto's going down sometime ago, I would like to say where else can you go EXCEPT up. But for those companies that are SUPPOSED to be up there now, there's a chance they'll go down faster. You know the saying "what goes up must come down and what goes down must come up" - it's the Law of Physics. (wink wink, hopefully it applies here) LOL.

Sorry for getting out of the topic about VE66 a bit, as even in my area the phone is not yet available. I do know the phone is available in mainland China for about US$400, though I do speculate my area will sell VE66 for no more than US$300 due to more competition from other brands. I have been using my Zn5 for about 3 months now, and yet I have not taken more than 10 photos with the phone. I believe a phone is a phone and its main purpose should be for communication, everything else should be "extra". I also believe a flip phone with Crystal Talk offers the best voice quality, even over bar phones with Crystal Talk. If a bar phone with Crystal Talk gets an A for voice quality, a flip phone with Crystal Talk should deserve A+, if not A++. If you have an E8 and enjoys the music much, there might not be enough reason for you to buy Zn5. Not sure if I mentioned I also got an V8 2GB recently...mainly for EDGE where one of the operator in HK offers unlimited GPRS for about US$15 per month. I found the reception, under the same network and location, outperforms my good old E2, which still works wonder as a "music" phone.

Oops, forgotten to include this in, Aura's not available in my country. Got a feeling (just a hunch) that present authorised Moto distributor is not putting enough efforts to promote the brand, there's another new Moto distributor came into the market, parallel importing Moto's accessories like bluetooth headset, charger and so on and they are also recognised & supported by the local Moto Service Centre too. I'm not surprise if this new distributor could take over the phone brand too in the near future.

Thanks for the info. You know I'm a Moto fan and having read the cnet asia prizefighter award recently (ZN5 vs C902 and ZN5 vs Innov 8), I'm happy ZN5 won. From another perspective, I personally felt that the comparisons between ZN5 & Innov8 was a little "out of range". Against C902 was alright, specs were close, both 5Mp cam and little separate them like 3G or Wifi BUT against Innov8, it's different category all together. Of course I'm still happy ZN5 won - just that a smartphone user usually look for different features as compared to a dedicated camera phone. I've been thinking for a while, ZN5 will fill in exactly to where E8's soft spot is - camera. If I change to ZN5 for this reason, I'm thinking whether it's worth it, like you, I already have a Canon digital camera for that purpose. If I were to choose, I rather go for VE66 as the ENHANCED Crystaltalk impressed me more. Somehow to me, a mobile phone is more for business purpose and I want all my clients to hear me well, irregardless of how noisy the environment is and I'm looking at towards EXTREMELY well in voice quality, that's one of the reason why I chose Moto. Anyway, my E8 is serving me really well, still enjoy using it and happy so far. I'm hoping my local Moto importer brings in VE66 as my preferred design these days are either slide or bar designs - easy one hand operation. I'll be watching out on VE66's price to see if it is reasonable enough for my budget. Like I said earlier, I'll never be able to catch up with you on Motorola's phone collection.

Sad to hear the fact your local Moto dealer will not carry Zn5, which is a very good phone by all means, given various review (other than...which has NONE!). Compare to most other phones, Zn5 actually isn't that expensive. Some may even be US$0 with contract. Just curious, does your place have the Aura? Somehow I don't feel the financial crisis has much impact in the mobile phone market, as at least electronic shops in HK are still packed with people. (maybe tourists) If you do have a chance to come by HK, maybe you can get a Zn5. All phones in HK are unlocked with English menu.

Recently I talked to one of the top management guys in our local Motorola distributor office and was surprised that they are not bringing in ZN5 due to high costings. The more surprising news was that he looked "ignorant" when I mentioned VE66. Maybe the global crisis has gotten to him. Hope you'll get this VE66 next and I'm really interested to find out more about the Enhanced Crystal Talk feature with dual microphones.

Can't wait for official release of VE66 where I live, as I keep looking at Moto's mainland China's site, which is already on sale. Just wondering if VE66's radio is antenna free like EM35...otherwise might need to get both! (already bought 14 Moto phones this year...latest addition being V8...Yes! Good old V8 for about US$244. I use this V8 with the network with unlimited GPRS...) H780 sort of looks good too, only I already got H15 recently. (really like the flip idea on Bluetooth) This year I already bought H375, T505, H5, H350, and even H670 for about US$18 with my V8) So no more budget for H780...this year! Maybe after New Year (where I get my bonus...yes! My company is one of the few who has been doing very well even these days) I'll get one.

Fully agreed with 100 Moto on voice quality. The thing he's talking about "capture all the background noise" has happened on my wife's SE phone when she's at a very noisy place. For this (the noise), even though it's free, I wouldn't want it. The high pitch noise just poked my eardrum like needles do. @100 Moto, Have you tried the Motorola H780 bluetooth headset that comes with CrystalTalk, noise cancellation & DSP (Digital Signal Processing)?. Specs looks good but reviews doesn't but I learnt not to trust so much on internet reviews nowadays. My H12 performed so well for me, crystal clear on both sides but the internet reviews were not so good. I read that H780 comes with a separate button to turn on/off noise cancellation feature and I think it's great feature, users can actually show the effectiveness of Motorola's technology this time.

Very true and 100% correct. Motorola phones also do an excellent job of voice reproduction.

Unlike some other brands, Moto specializes in "communication" products. So if one looks for a "phone" to talk, so the other party can clearly hear what one is saying, that's what Moto is good at. Other companies may offer "everything else" as a multimedia device, however, in terms of "talk" quality, they do nothing but capture all the background noise...so the person's own voice CANNOT be heard.

Yes, I have to agree with you that Motorola is the best communication tool, and CrystalTalk techonology is unbeatable, but I found that it also depend on the quality of the speaker too....when I brought my V9, Motorola was doing a promotion by giving out a W181 for free. W181 also came with CrystakTalk but the sound or sound quality is not half as good as the V9. Anyway, the W181 still sound much better than my Nokia 2630; which cost almost 3 times the price! I bet my new Motorola Aura will sound excellent. Looking forward to receiving it before Christmas. Thank you Moto.

Yes, I heard about Crystal Talk 2 on VE66, and possibly on other Moto phones in the future. Moto has been very generous to offer such feature across most of its line up....even low-end phones like EM330 (known as EM28 here) which I recently got. Really amazed while other brands still can't offer anything similar to Crystal Talk, Moto has already moved on to Crystal Talk 2. Way to go Moto! The company specializing in "communication (if not music as well!) products".

Hello friend, I noticed that this VE66 has ENHANCED CrystalTalk with 2 microphones built-in. I'm quite sure my E8 and my previous V8 has only 1 microphone CrystalTalk technology and it's already outperformed other phone brands in the market from this aspect, so I would appreciate if you could let me know from your point of view whether this Enhanced version is the 2nd version of CrystalTalk or not. Judging from it, it certainly looks like it's the latest or 2nd version. With 2 microphones, I believe the noise cancelling effect is even better. What do you think?

Then how about the good old K3? 3.5G for US$128? Ex-top of the line with all the metal casing you want! You never told me where you live, wherever you're, guess you can only DREAM about having your Moto phone being repaired...in less than an hour. (most likely 40~50 mins) Unlike other manufacturers who sell 4 times more phones, Moto phones in my city are some of the most reliable where no more than 5 (usually 1) persons are waiting in line for service, vs. others may have to wait at least an hour just to "drop off" the phone for service.

Should I mention all of them? And don't get me wrong, I mentioned sliding or metal look design, it means including the flip as well...... we can start from ROKR E8 with no 3G no WLAN and only 2MP camera priced over US$ 200 (at my place, remember!!!!), ROKR E6 with no 3G no WLAN and only 2MP camera (released at 2006 but still priced over US$ 200, RAZR2 V8 with no 3G no WLAN and even over US$ 300. Not to mention how difficult for us to have it repaired if it is out of service. It seems the main dealer doesn't have every single part including the casing for their stock.

Or else, can you be a bit more precise which phones you're referring to costing over US$200? I only know VE75, which is only available in mainland China, is costing over US$200 in slide form. The rest of the sliders like Zn200 and EM325 cost only around US$128 at the moment. Forget about Z8 and Z10...those are so crappy that wouldn't even need to be mentioned. The only other slider I can think of is Z6, which is being sold "near" US$200.

Most of Motorola at my place, which comes with at least 2 MP camera and slidng or metal look design will be priced over than US$ 200. But, always something left behind. Sometimes or often comes without 3G/HSDPA, or if even comes with 3G than no wi-fi and cost over US$400, unbelieveable!!!!! Now you can understan why we say moto always over priced... The one you mentioned is only a low end handset with only VGA camera, nothing more...we can get a 2GB external memory easily but if you only have VGA camera and no 3G, nothin' you can do to change it.

i totally agree, i have the razr 2 v8 and i'm fed up waiting for a high-end motorola clamshell phone. I like the keypad of the VE66, its different a bit to the traditional razr like keypads and it somewhat resemblems the aura. could this be the new design for motorola phones? I would love to see a motorola clamshell with the keypad area being a touchscreen and it could be skinned to whatever you want the keypad to look like. I guess i'm going overboard there...

Just a note; Just because it's third world countries, it doesn't mean it's all desert and bushveld. South Africa has 4 cell networks, 2 of which are 3G 3.6mbps operators with extensive coverage and all are edge enabled. MTN & Vodacom (majority vodafone owned) are one of the top operators in terms of turnover in the world. Do a search and you'll see. South Africa has had 3G coverage since the birth of the Nokia 6630. This is because of the stranglehold that the goverment has on the fixed telecoms operators' environment. 3G is a godsend in Africa. The industry is booming. The same goes for India.

A lot of other sites say that it does have aGPS. Also this model is only for South East Asia, China, Europe the Middle East and Africa first, starting Q4 2008. Usually these places have no 3G network. Motorola's plans were for two versions of the phone, one without and one with 3G.

I tried to post a link to a website regarding the "3G" VE70 but was banned...(as this place doesn't like Moto to begin with...didn't know news from elsewhere also gets sensored) According to the source I read, VE70 only has 2mp cam. Though I don't understand why so many people seem to have the perception of better cam = better phone... I've a Moto Zn5..one of the best cam phone around, except out of most of its functions, I use the cam the least. I mean, why bother with a phone cam when I can take REAL photos with my Canon G9?

i don't care what you people think. sony ericsson camera phones don't have a great performance talking about shooting. the pics aren't very clear and they still use 2x zoom in their new phones (?). this phone kicks sony ericsson and nokia's non-smartphone camera phones. and for those who cannot read, IT DOES FEATURE 3G! (you probally didn't understand it but that's ok. u people should at least pay attention in the description after talking down on it). i hope they release their 8 megapixel phone soon because it'll be, again, the best cameraphone in the market (nowadays, it's ZN5).

You doesn't know anything about Motorola VE66 yet because not in the market. Motorola VE66 has 30 fps video recording and 30 fps video player. What a shame compare Motorola VE66 with released product.

yepp so its the best 5mpx photo taker in all the brands but can that thing beat nokia samsung or lgs video quality.??? i bet that unit is nonsense against sony or nokia on night imaging since it doesnt have xenon. so dont mock other brand because of VE66 higher quality imaging coz theres many things that other phones can do that the VE66 cant. not that i hate moto but i like functionality more than just looks and so called superb camera quality. peace!!!!!!

While Nokia has made its 7th 5MP cameraphone, Samsung 10th or more, SE 4th, MOTO is only on the second!!!! And again, as always, no 3G, no GPS, small screen, no Accelerometer, ugly, and so big and heavy!!!! I don't know why MOTO is still in the mobile business??!!

I'd just like to point out that the reason that Motorola does not come out with phones with 8MP cameras or GPS features it not because they can't, it's because Motorola deals more with satellites and and communication towers. It is ironic how this phone gets a 7.0 across the board and the W705 gets a 9.1. Almost identical features except the Moto has a 5MP camera and the SE has a bigger screen. Does the voting results really mean anything? Or is it a tool to "vote for your favourite brand"? Montavista is nice. Hopefully more people buy Motorola phones and see that the UI is one of the nicest if not the nicest (I think it is the nicest).
