A very good/excellent phone that's quite durable. Good - It does everything as advertized, and is incrediably easy to opperate. The best thing is it holds calls where most all other phones fail - almost zero dropped calls. It also has an amazing range. Instruction book is easy to follow thus it is pretty thick, (112 pages including an extensive index.) The feel is very smooth and the widgits are a godsend. Bad - The screen is small, and the 2MP camera is fair. The 2/4/8X is easy to use, but the zoom is not continuous, so the video gets choppy. The mic has good range, but sounds only fair, but it does seperate conversations pretty good. I had it for over three years now, and I have to replace it because the keys won't respond to in-call menu options, (it can dial any number, but then the keyboard quits). The battery has gotten slowly weaker in the past 6 months, but still have ~ 2 hr. talk time. I've been with AT&T throughout, and got the phone for $0.99 (re-furbished). Bottom line - I couldn't expect more from the phone, and am sad to let it go.

this is a great phone. it has a excellent interface and is very customizable. Also, the buttons are very easy to text with because you never have to lift your fingers; they just glide across the buttons.

Can an MP3 of 320kbps be loaded and played on this phone? The manual says 256kbps max but I am hoping that the manual is not correct -- much of my collection is at 320kbps and I don't want a music phone that can't handle it. I see that the MOTOROKR E8 can handle 320kbps, but it's missing some features compared to the Z9.

Moto Z9 - Great phone. I have AT&T service, and Motorola phones seem to be made for AT&T. Superior build quality, crystal clear signal. Replaced Moto V3xx, which is also a great phone, in fact the 2 Motorola phones are the first cell phones I've ever owned that I REALLY liked. Only downside on Z9, is the keypad is replaced with small metal buttons, but I can live with that.

I have had three motorolas and they were horrific! a V190, k1 KRZR, and a Z6 RIZR. Moto is much too expensive for the feature set that you get. They have very poor build quality, plus they will all have issue beyond anything you can control. Us american's cant make cars and we really can't make phones. It is definately worth sending my money to another country that is capable of making an amazing phone like SonyE. Samsung LG or Nokia. A little extra money goes along way with other manufacturers.

Purchased a 4GB card for this phone, downloaded a 400MB TV show, tried to watch, got to the 1 and a half minute mark of a 59 minute show, and the phone read: "Not enough memory for application." Wuzzup wit dat? I purchased a 4 GB chip for a REASON, Motorolla! This phone was rated #5 on CNET's "Best Cell Phones" catagory! I guess "Best Cell Phone" doesn't mean "Working Video on a Cell Phone", right? SHAME on putting video on a cell phone that can't handle it, Motorolla! If only you had "done the right thing" and kept video capability off the Moto Z9, I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD ANY EXPECTATIONS THAT IT WOULD WORK!!!

I want a good camera phone for one simple reason. I dont want to carry a camera everywhere I go but enjoy taking pictures. Therefor, I have an SE K850i 5 mega pix camera phone. And when SE comes out with there 8 mega pix camera phone I will own it. I personaly used the Z9 and found it lacks good functions that my SE has. Motorola makes strong revolutionary phones but lack good functions like camera and user interface to name a couple. I have givin motorola several chances but they always disapoint. Hopefully there new 5 mega pix camera will bring finally make me a beleiver. Thanx, eddie

Fully agreed with kickback999 on the camera. I've used the 2.0Mp to take pictures and email them to my clients. Pictures are definitely not bad at all.

Hans, I share your confusion too years ago whether which phone to choose. I found out that since there are 3 design types available, I now know that I'm more suited to use either a slide or candy bar design. I'll explain why. Candy bar Design Easy, one hand operation, view screen without having to flip open (as clamshell design). Very well suited for people who use to carry things around like bags, documents or equipment during work. Clamshell Design Fashionable design, many designs require 2 hands to operate eventhough it can be one hand operated, (some will say) but it'll definitely last longer if operate with 2 hands putting less pressure on the hinge. Imagine when your hands are full of things while a call comes ringing. Slide Design Similar to Candy bar design but project more elegants in design. Can definitely be operated with one hand. Keeping a slide phone in a tight pocket with frequent bending/straightening positions could put the sliding mechanizm under stress due to multiple angle pressures. So if you are like a friend of mine, working as a car mechanic, candy bar design is the preferred design as he kneels, stands, lying down while working. He could answer calls by looking and press the button with one hand too. Even better, if he has a bluetooth headset with ear hook and sets his call answering to auto answer after a few rings. I guess by now you'll see what I'm trying to say. I would suggest you determine which type of phone design you want or suits you, then look at what features you want in that phone. My personal opinion, if you do not require 3G, don't go a 3G phone as it consumes more battery than non 3G phone. So Z9 or U9, you'll need to decide for yourself base on your own requirement. You obviously haven't used a moto before. When it come to build quality, even the mid-ranged phones of moto (L72) will make the high end models of Nokia feel cheap. The Z9 will make ANY Nokia phone feel second rate.

Hans, I can't answer you directly whether the Z9's sound quality is good or bad. Since the Z9 and other Motorola phones are utilizing Crystal Talk Technology, I could base my feedback to you from my personal experience on this particular feature since I'm a V8 user. I'll break my feedbacks to 3 sections. 1) Internal Sound quality Crystal Talk Technology - so far the best I've experienced, compared with Sony Ericsson, Nokia and PDA phones. 2) External Sound quality Rear speaker - not bad at all, lose out to the old K750i Sony Ericsson (I was surprised with its performance) but is better than the K550i which is a later model. I believe the "W" walkman models should outperform the Z9, maybe, maybe not. 3) Based on reviews Try CNET, I've read the reviews, I would put it as approx. 95% of users review said the Z9's Crystal Talk is the best. So which one are you looking for? The internal sound quality or the external? Based on my V8's Crystal Talk performance, I would say it's fantastic, really clear and crisp. The bass and treble are well balanced, unlike many phones I've used, they tend to have higher treble, making conversation with someone that talks loud uncomfortable to hear. I'm currently eyeing the Z9, personally I don't like to have the 3G feature as it'll consume more battery than normal but I can't say the 3G is bad as it's a feature that many users want - but not many uses it. Hope the above helps.

The same reason you want a phone for a GPS. The Z9 could be an awesome phone, but lack of good camera and functionability makes it a piece of crap. Motorola sucks in the camera dept. My girls sony W580 with no flash takes a better picture than motorola. I'm sorry, people want and all around good camera phone and motorola just does'nt cut it. Sorry guys, WiFi is not the future. Grab yourself a data plan and you will see why looking for a WiFi hotspot is for beggers. AT&T Wireless offers unlimited MediaNet for like $15/month on 3G. Do not waste your money and battery life on WiFi eequiped phones. And what are you going to do with a touch screen? Put your fingerprints all over it and pretend you are cool like Apple fanboys? Give me the responsive feel of real buttons please.

Who buys a phone for the built in camera? Give me a break if you want to take and edit pictures buy a real camera and get Photoshop! Final Motorola is including GPS in there non-smart phones! Now GPS there is a feature every phone will have after July 11th (aka iphone 3G release day, thanks Apple a year too late on the GPS, we have all had to suffer). The Z9 has JSR 179 support, meaning you can run free GPS location based midlets (never buy AT&T's or anyones GPS crap for your mobile it is a rip off! Now if Moto would put this in a better form factor (slide phones suck!) and stop charging an arm and a leg for crappy media features they might have a product.

I owned this phone for about a week. It's very sleek and pretty. Has some good features, but not enough. Pictures ok, but can't do anything with them once taken. No croping, editing nothing fun. This phone sucks. It's boring. I took it back and bought an unlocked K850i by sony ericsson and am so happy I did so. I bought the razor when it was first released and did the same, took back. Motorola phones suck. Motorola better start picking up the ball because it's bouncing away. If you have ATT, don't buy this phone. Wait for something or buy Sony ericsson W580, so much better. Very true on that comment, Stuart. Adding bells and whistles WILL drag the battery down. Even my iPod Touch can't live for 5 hours surfing the net using WiFi. This goes to show that phones cannot do everything we wanted them to do. We're pushing the phone to the limits wherein everyone will think that the best ones are the phones with the most features, not the best.

I agreed on the inclusion of WiFi and touch screen too for future models. On camera, the 2.0MP is nothing to shout about BUT it's picture quality is not bad either. I'm currently not a Z9 user yet but have used Z3 and currently using V8. The 2.0MP did not disappoint me, in fact I used it to take pictures and email to my clients. Viewing from Microsoft Office Picture Manager, the pictures were generally good, I would say. The other concern on too much features in a mobile phone (applies to all other brands)would affect it's battery consumption. 3G, Camera with flash, WiFi, Bluetooth, Music player, would definitely drag it's power. That's why most of the PDA phones nowadays have battery above 1000Mah and yet, talk time aren't impressive.

I fully agreed with you love moto. Not being disrespectful to any brands, the materials used in the Motorola phones especially the higher range were impressive. Built is solid, voice quality VERY impressive - CrystalTalk. I'm currently using V8, considering this Z9 seriously.

The phone itself doesn't have any GPS maps built-in and you can't save any to it. The navigation it uses depends on having a network. This can be really bad if you are lost somewhere where you don't have reception. So basically, there is almost no advantage in having this phone over the regular rizr series.

I used the Motorola Z9 for about a week. The Phone really does have great call quality and sound, crystal clear. It also has a great screen, crystal clear. It's packed with some fun features like gps, tv, xfm radio, good stuff. As far as the pic quality, ok. When you take a pic and save, you can't do any thing as far as zoom, crop, rotate, no editing what so ever this pissed me off. The texting options are also limited. It does'nt have emoticons, which my girlfriend motorola razor has that. This issues that I have with the Z9 might not be a deal breaker for you but it was for me. I like my tilt better. I was trying simplyfy with the Z9 but I will wait. As far as the LG shine, I would buy that for it's features over the Z9. But I hear the screen likes to crack. Hope this was helpful. It is a good semi basic phone, I just don't understand motorolal ways of trying to make something better with no follow through. thanx eddie

Motorola is going to the long way from 2nd manufacturer in the world to death. I have many Motorola's and they work great (like E398 and MPx220) but they are old and haven't enough things. I want Moto ressorect, but they wont. Moto will be trade for a low price to the Company in Chna or Korea like Siemens and will dead like Siemens. Motorola goes down since 2005 when they CANCEL their best inovative phones like E1120 (with 3.2MP camera). They have bad boss and he will kill the company which create the first GSM in the world :(

I have had many, many phones, including the N95 8GB, N82, Prad, Viewty, BB 8820, BB 8300, .... I can tell you for sure that at least on the AT&T network, in the US, this is the highest call-quality phone on the market. The audio quality and reception is incredible. Most other phones have so much high frequency noise it hurts my ears. This is like an old wired Bell phone. Truly a pleasure to use.

Just got this phone a week ago and it's pretty nice. Very nice screen and color. It's well built which means it's a little heavy, but unless you're a 98 pound weakling you'll get used to it. The GPS and MP3 player work very well. Only bad thing so far is how bad it shows fingerprints. Overall great phone!

I agree with harry, sure every phone has an mp3 player, but it's really something if it has an FM radio because with fm radio, you have unlimited FREE access to music and talk content. Most motorola phones lack this feature, so if they ever plan to step up, they really need to put this feature in their phones. And if you don't like the FM radio, then DON'T USE IT in the phone.

The fm radio feature is not for poor people, it's for people that don't like to listen to the same old music in their playlists, want to discover new music, or simply like talk shows and news. I own the motorola e815 and it has a special headset that has an fm radio in it great phone

LOL! At the mindless f00l who say FM Radio is for poor countries and people who can't affor to buy music. LOL ive got a N81 and have around 200 mp3s on it, i buy Music from i-Tunes and NOKIA Music Store, also buy CDs from the shop but i still listen to radio for specific News, Guests and when im feeling bored of TV, PC and my music il listen to FM Radio, where i am its VERY reliable,and good quality.

To the likely American who wrote " Fm radio is for poor countries where they cannot afford to buy music"...I now work in HK which you might consider as 3rd world, (but if you've ever been to Dubai, US would look like 3rd world as well) I listen to radio using my Moto E2 over 95% of the time, even though my 2GB is "packed" with music. No I don't rely radio for music much. Rather, radio often provides me first hand information which may take me 2~3 times more to get through 3.5G network, which sorry for many Americans still haven't experienced. I lived in US before, and over 20 years ago I was stranded on I-80 for almost 6 hours...namely because not a single radio station (which only cared about music but no news!) reported the flood and the serious traffic delays it caused. Yes, Z9 is designed for Americans (again how many can really used HSDPA?), though that doesn't mean the phone cannot incorporate a radio which can be found on a W270, which I just got one for my father-in-law for US$90. And Moto would be in much worse shape if it doesn't export any of its stuff by only selling to the US market. Yes, US market is big but compare to the global market, it may only be 1/3.

yeah!!fm for poor country...well,seems like the motohaters r lookin for weaknss in thiz phone...i know,u people r juz hate bcoz u hate it..poor..i used nokia 5300,well..it sucks,just like japanese cars,poor quality even fast,look so so good..n cant b use fo long time..mayb 1yr is enuf..huhuu..burnt moneyyy..once dropped,its broke..not like my previous L7..tough,reliable,sxy..sadly i made mstke by selling it.. :'(

This phone is targeted for the USA market. Americans don't care for FM radio or camera. More pixels is not better with crappy lens anyways. Fm radio is for poor countries where they cannot afford to buy music.

If you go to AT&T's website, this phone is reported as having a 1.3 MP camera. So who's right? GSMArena, or AT&T? IMO, putting a 1.3 MP camera would be incredibly foolish of Motorola, especially after making nearly all phones with 2 MP cams.

People are never happy. GPS, 8gb microSD, 2.4" screen, 500mhz cpu. HASDPA 850/1900 Please tell me how this is a basic phone? As for the battery life I've seen better on other moto's like E2, E6 Z6, U9, etc...
