NEC N840 - User Reviews

  • I have a problem with my cell, I bought it 3 year ago, in vancouver, and work really well there, but then I came mexico, and was working ok, and I makemy Back groud picture to cover all the backgroud, and then, It just "stop", not botton funtion, n stuff like that, then I try to tun it off, and then on, and It work, but, then automathicly it turn off and on, until the battery is out of energy, What can I do?? or how do I rest it? I try to search like a rest botton in the user manual bbut, nothing, PLEASE HELPME

  • i think there's another converter available on the market. its called ImTOO 3GP converter. i used it to convert video files but there's also another option of conversion without video (thus audio only). cheers!

  • regarding the post below, i meant .3gp, and NOT .ogp.

  • yes, you have to convert them to .ogp format and load it as a video file with sound only. Then you can select that video file as a ringtone. Search for n840 ringtones on howardforums.com. youll need a converter to convert it to the .ogp format. there is a free one floatin around the internet somewhere.

  • is there any possible way of using mp3's as ringtones??

  • as the bluetooth is locked to headsets only, does that mean that bluetooth HEADPHONE headsets will work too?

  • to upload mp3 songs via minisd card, you have to name the song with 8 characters or less using alphanumeric characters, eg. yudh88dj.mp3. then they have to be in the right folder. just format the minisd so you get the folders placed on the card. they have to be in private-->music--> etc.

  • sd code - 0000

  • code for format mini SD card?? and security code of reset settings ???? help me thanks.

  • I think the N840 is a great phone It does all the jobs for me photos onto computer which are good quality but the only problem I am having I went away and forgot my mains charger so I decided to buy a car charger I tryed some of the big mobile places and no way could I buy one, I had a couple from 2 shops to try and the phone screen showed wrong voltage and I was told to get in touch with manufacture to me thats a joke. You can get these chargers for other phones so why not for this model. I brought this phone in Hong Kong so how can I find the NEC address in UK to ask why so I would be grateful if you could assist me

  • number security code for nec n840????? help me!

  • don't buy, you wouldn't bear the shutter sound of the camera/video, nothing can be done to turn it off

  • I usually never post here but I'm having a serious problem with the n840..I can't transfer the pictures I took from the phone back on to the PC with the data cable...does anyone know the step-by-step instructions to do it? and for mp3s....they have the be less than 8 characters and under 192 kps then your phone will recognize

  • yes, I am having the same problem! My friend tried to send me a photo through my phone and I can't open it...and it continues to be sent to me...I think it's been sent to me about 10 times. Any advice on how to open would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • thank you very much. your information helped.

  • In order for your phone to recognize MP3 songs, you MUST use the provided USB cable to download the files to the miniSD card. If you use a miniSD/SD card reader to transfer MP3 songs to the miniSD card, then the NEC N840 phone will not recognize the MP3 files. I can send/receive messages via this phone, so I do not know specifically as to why someone is unable to use this function. It works just fine for me. Check your local cell phone carrier.

  • i have no idea how to upload mp3s from my comp to my phone. i tried putting the song in the miniSD card, but the phone doesn't seem to recognize the file in the card. i was wondering if there is any special folder that i need to create so that the phone can recognize it. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

  • does any one know why i cant recieve meassages but cant send any out? i've used it before but now it wunt work. can any one help me?

  • i'm an idiot, the SIM card fits underneath some metal retainers - problem solved! sorry

  • hey.. i just bought the N840, and was hoping to take the SIM from my motorola V551 and put that in the N840 in order to use the phone with my cingular number. But i can't make the sim card fit! it is a 64K smartchip. Is there a different type of card i need? If so, how do I go about making that work with my current number. Or maybe I just don't know how to install it in to this phone? Help!

  • anyone have any idea how to read an alert message? I recieve one this morning, but have no idea how to read it. it's not mentioned in the user's manual at all ~___~"

  • yup, i got it!! Thanks Sleekdeke!! =)

  • OneBite, I believe you can view the MMS attachment (picture) by pressing the center direction button when you are within the message.

  • Does anyone know how can one make the chinese script folders and the ringtones in chinese script can be converted to english? Share some ways to make it converted. Also, anyone interested in buying NEC N840 or other gsm mobile phones in bulk? Contact me.

  • I don't think the phone supports MMF files. I think image attachments typically appear in the body of the MMS message. You can sync Lotus Notes using the full version of intellisync for SyncML here:

  • Urgent, can N840 sync calander/phone book with Lotus Notes?

  • Hi guys, can anyone view picture attachments in MMS messages? I recieved MMS with attachments but there's no way to view the picture message? Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Hey Guys, Do you know if NEC840 support MMF or Midi ringtone files? I have tried to store the files on the MiniSD card, but I can't seem to be able to play the music OR use it as my ringtone~ Got any ideas?

  • Uploading via MemoryEditor, max filesize for mp3s is 6Megs plus change. However, I hear one can play mp3s with greater filesizes off the MiniSD card. So, play around with different filesizes and find out.

  • the n840 camera is not comparable with the 902, 901iC, etc. it's junk. you can't compare anything with the 902, 901 series with the n840. n840 is just for phone and the camera part is just for play.

  • Don't move your hand while takin' a photo! Stay still!

  • I must be doing something wrong, my pictures look blurry when i d/l it to the comp. what settings do you guys have? I'm using superfine quality and Main-LCD photo size.

  • I am trying to upload a mp3 to N840 and it keep telling me the file is too large. I have changed the name to 01.mp3 and the file size is about 6MB. What is the max. size of MP3 that we can upload?

  • dose any one know where i gat get a sim card read when things have been deleted ie tex and call records thanks [email protected] or 07932 159681

  • I think the N840 and 902SH are in different class because of the feature set, and price. The N840's closer competitor is the TM-200. Although N840 lacks the unrestricted multimedia, and connectivity abilities of the 902SH, it has arguably the best 2MP camera among handsets right now. Many people who have viewed and compared the photos taken by N840, 902, and TM-200 agree that the N840 takes clearer pictures, without the out-of-focus blurr that occurs in the 902 and few photos in TM-200. The 902, however, is a more complete phone with it's strength in the multimedia abilities, and the super screen display. The phone is also $300+ USD more than the N840 and TM-200 without contract. It all depends on what you want. If you want comprehensive set of features and the design of the 902, and are willing to pay the high price, then go for the 902. If you want a great camera, typical multimedia ability and the design of the N840, then go for that.

  • Hey I have a question. For all the people using this phone, would you recomend this to me? Do you like it, is it good? Also is the picture quality good, i mean i know its 2 megapixel but is it really better than other 1.3's out there? Does the package include a USB cable and memory card? If not, where can i get it from? I live in Canada. Please and thanks for your time. If you can please email the answers at [email protected] Thanks peeps

  • not worth the price, i though NEC would make soemthing better, i sold it the next day after i bought it... can't beat the Sharp V902SH

  • Can someone recommend a reliable merchant for the n840 - unbranded (without network markings). Thanks.

  • also with the video capture is there a time limit? i read that you could only shoot 30 second clip. let me know

  • I am planning to get a new cell phone and i am down to 2 choices...either samsung d500 or the nec n840. Any recommendations?

  • NEC 515/525's car charger is compatible with the N840. I got one of those in the discount bin at an ATTWS store a while ago.

  • NEC using the same charger as the Sharp? i suppose it doesnt hurt anything to confirm it, but that would be one helluva first... if all manufacturors used the same charger, life would be just too easy!

  • Thanks for the info on the car charger. I dont know if any of you have had this problem but my N840 will not stayed charged for more than like 3 hours - even if it is only in standby mode for that time. I might could be on the phone for 20 minutes and it will start showing one and then two bars off of the charging display. Any ideas as to what could cause this and the solution. Thanks a bunch.

  • Does anyone know how to configure the phone so that it can connect to internet?

  • I think the N840 uses the same car charger as the Sharp GX32. You will only be able to find after market ones though. Who's been able to use customized SMS tones on their phone? I can only get the midi ones to work, can't seem to use MFM like the ones that are in included with the phone.

  • Like the phone a lot - where can I get a travel charger for the phone. I am here in the USA and can't seem to find one - maybe I am just not looking at the right sites. If someone knows where to get a travel charger for the NEC N840 please email me [email protected] Thanks so much in advance.

  • hmm could sumone help me? ive been trying to upload music via the datacable.but i cannot seem to find a port.i search it with the memoryeditor program but it keeps telling me there is not port which can communicate....anyone know the problem?thanx

  • hi i am using n840 and cannot play 3gpp files. is there any limitation and where i can make 3gp files from wmv or other video formats? thanks

  • I have my n840 on cingular, I can make/recieve phone calls just fine, but I havent been able to get GPRS configured - Ive been asking around howard forums, but nobody seems to have gotten the configuration working...anyone know anything about this?

  • I heard there is a TV tuner on this unit? anyone ever heard of it???

  • Tried to download 3GP (3GPP) movie file (more than 300 kB)... Can't play it ((( Hoped it could play my converted movies (about 70 movies). It seems 512 Mb SDcard can be used only for MP3s and photos. That sucks ((( Or is there some solution of that? --------------------------------- Battery life time! It works about 2-3 days and dies after that. ((( - 1 hour talk time/day, 5-10 photos/day, 1 hour MP3 listening/day, 1 hour menu surfing/day. --------------------------------- MP3 player: How can I surf (play, stop, rewind etc.) my MP3 files when cell is closed? I can only change volume level pressin' sidekeys ((( Or it's impossible?

  • That's awesome 512MB works! Maybe I should buy another memory card. Just got the phone, have some mixed feelings about it. I'll post a better review later after i've used it a bit longer. The memory editor is confusing as hell, i hate the creaking sound the hinge makes when opening and closing the phone. Anyone of you find that you have to tilt the phone a certain way to hear better?

  • I've got an nec n840 with a 512 meg card and it works fine

  • not known yet. 256 works perfectly. To SF-boy: try to setup darkness while takin' photos, i mean when sun shines make it some darker. Photos gonna be much better.

  • does anyone know if N840 support MiniSD that's larger than 216mb? i was thinking of getting a 512mb one, but i'm not sure if it'll work on n840 help help!

  • hey san francisco person: you need to set up your network band to 850/1900. Menu -> Phone settings -> Connection -> Band. somewhere like that.

  • I pre-ordered a 1gb mini-SD card for it, and they should be out at the end of March. The highest quality ringtones you can get can only be 300k big and must be in 3gp video format. It doesn't support mp3 ringtones. The camera and video are awesome, but they have that shutter sound you can't get rid of, to let others know what you're doing. All I can say is that it doesn't like moving pictures and it doesn't like the dark. There is no flash, it's just an led light that you turn on and off. Which doesn't help much. Here's some pics/videos...

  • Please help. I'm in San Francisco. I bought the phone from Hong Kong. After I put the sim card in, the phone keep saying searching, but no carrier is found. How can I start using the phone in US???

  • Just wonder, why we need to unlock the phone? And if necessary, does someone know how to unlock it?

  • In what resolution does the N840 record video?

  • Is it available to download JAVA into da cell? Except WAP. Via datacable. Who wants o take a look at the pics of the cell and photos made with the cell, go here: link is in russian (!)

  • no you can't. 400 dollars? not even close. and with 512 mb? nope... Try ebay. It's going around $500 for 128 mb.

  • Does the N840 have a speakerphone and where can I get an unlocked model in NYC for about $400USD with a 512 minSD Card? Thanks

  • I would bought this phone if it operates on UMTS/900/1800/1900 other than 850/900/1800/1900. the 850 was really no use, unless you use the rogers network. Aside from that, I guess having the 1900 band is already enough for north america networks since that most run on a 1900 band. Unless you are in some places of North America that runs on a 850Mhz band.

  • I live in the U.S and I have this phone. It is quadband and will work with Cingular/Tmobile/ATT. Also, the picture on this site really doesnt look to much like that phone, it's actually much lighter in color. The silver front looks great and the light charcoal inside looks sleek. The keypad light is orange and definitely grabs the attention of other people. Everyone that see's this phone so far has been like "whoa, nice". The ringer is 64 bit polyphonic or something like that. The mp3 player is great too. It has good sound. Picture quality is nice. You obviously cannot compare the picture to a digital camera, but it looks good for a phone.

  • neil: I heard that the bluetooth for N840 is for headset ONLY

  • This phone has excellent features like 2mp camera, huge 250k color screens & bluetooth. However, it looks terrible. I can't imagine there is still a phone out there use charcoal & black plastic. I almost bought this phone but I'll wait as SE & Nokia have some new phones will similar featues with elegant looks! I can't wait!

  • Dear all, Does anyone knows what kind of rington format N840 support? Does it support mmf format? Thanks

  • It seems that the bluetooth connectivity does not allow file transfer between PCs or other phones. Does anyone know a way around this, perhaps software or firmware update?

  • I need some one to explain exactly how to use bluetooth for the e616v nec phone,

  • BTW, for those who need to change the langguage to English, you can go to : 1) press menu button 2) go to 1 (set up) 3) then go into 1 again (that is the handphone set up) 4) go to 6 (that is the langguage set up) 5) choose 3 (English) THat's it

  • for those who wants to transfer pic onto the phone, you have to rename the photos (from your computer) to names like: NEC_0019 (similar to those default name that the phone will create) so that the phone will then be able to recognise the pic , and then you will have to move the file to your phone memory in order to use these pic (such as to be wall paper), when you have moved the pic to the phone memory, you can rename them back to whatever name you like. Also for those who wants to upload MP3 songs to your miniSD, you will have to rename the songs in not more than 8 characters, eg: 01.mp3 , hope this helps

  • Super phone ! The installation CD has an english translation, but user's notice is only in chinese...not so easy ! Could someone help me ? Many thanks

  • nice phone ..but can anyone tell me how to get one in Malaysia by online?? credit card..?? ..pls..

  • im havin the same problem as rbk, i was wondering if anyone could help? have the 128mb mini-sd card that came with the phone. I formatted it, and then I put it in my card reader so I can put some of the pics I have on my computer onto the phone. But the problem is that the phone can't seem to read the files? But on when the sd card to plugged into the reader and I open the folder up the computer can read the files perfectly. This also seems to happen with all types of files, mp3s, pics, vids etc... The computer can read the pictures that were taken with the phone that were saved on the sd card, but why can't the phone read the pictures that were transferred to it? I know for a fact that I put the files in the right folders. Any ideas?

  • Here is the TEST (in russian) + pics made with its camera:

  • The phone without be used at all with battery fully charged it stays in stand by time about 9 days...at least mine does and when i used it resists up to 3 days ( i talk about 60 minutes per day)

  • Does anyone know how to switch language to English? Thanks.

  • The specs are good... 2Mp camera phone, BUT can it support 3g applications that is the problem. And also MiniSD card are not widely use yet

  • Normally you need to format the sd card with the devide (in this case the phone itself) cause it kinda create some control files

  • Just forgotten to ask: is this phone compatible with french networks ? Apologies and good night...

  • What about photos quality, compared with Sharp GX30?

  • hello everyone! a couple questions,if yall can answer it for me itll be great! 1-ive beenhearing mixed reviews about NEC phones in general.im gonna get one from hongkong so i dont have acceess to servicing etc.are NEC phones good?do they break easily?have any problems? thanx guys.

  • Hi, just got a nec n840 and its just amazing but I have a problem with the sd card I think? Ok so I have the 128mb mini-sd card that came with the phone. I formatted it, and then I put it in my card reader so I can put some of the pics I have on my computer onto the phone. But the problem is that the phone can't seem to read the files? • Thank you for your input. Solved the bluetooth thing, I'm going to sign a contract and get a SE T610 with bt headset for free. Therefore not necessary for bt. Can anybody verify the mb limit? I know GX32 can take 512mb or more, but that phone has been around for a while, feel a bit weird getting old stuff. Does anybody know what is the playback format? Does it play 3gp? Thanks

  • if you want bluetooth, then go for the S700. whereas for a better cam, the N840 would be your choice. it's true that the N840 doesn't have pure mp3 ringtones, but the sound is absolutely amazing. as for the mini SD, the phone comes with a 128MB card. and you can buy them on ebay if they're not available in your country. again about the movie....don't think you can shrink the size of and have it played on the phone.

  • Please somebody let me know if that phone can be used other countries except Japan? Does it have Usim lock that vodafone phones do. For instance, can I use it in Turkey?

  • Sorry, i just realized the movie issue was mentioned before, but could the movie be shrinked down as people in the S700 forum have said and be played in the N840? From spec N840 should be better, but since this forum is new, I know most of the possiblities of S700 and not NEC 840, please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • I'm about to buy a phone and my choices are down to SE S700 and NEC840. Can you help me decide? For SE700: (Correct me if I'm wrong) Pros: Full Bluetooth, can view a whole movie. Big, nice 262k screen Cons: 128mb limit(although rumor has it that it can use a bigger memory stick other than Sony), maybe software lag, been around for a while NEC N840: Pros: 2mp, quad band(don't really care), video ringtone, new Cons: bt limit to headset only, mini SD(don't know where to buy one, don't know about memory limit), not pure mp3 ringtone(maybe a pain), no one knows if it could play a full movie. Your help is greatly appreciated. Sold my k700, using a t310, I need a phone soon.

  • @ www.nieuwemobiel.nl it isn't on it :S.. isn't it comming to the Netherlands/Holland? Thanx

  • where can I buy the phone in Australia, is vodaphone Australia releasing it

  • tis phone is my dream.........

  • look at me im DayJ bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla You talk shit DavyJ DavyJ, don't mess up this forum with your anti N840 posts... The n840 is better than the M900 and you know it.. (mitsu suck against NEC as a whole aniway) there is next to no phyical difference between the CMOS cam and the CCD cam it's even rumored to be better than the 902's CCD sensor... and btw how would you like it if we started messing up the m900 forum???

  • lighter colors look smaller, and darker looks bigger just like the white version of oy 7610 looks thinner and smaller then the black but it really isn, you can look past lighter colors but darker stick out more, even in gsmarena reviews if there are two different color like the 7610 they even say light colors look thinner then dark

  • To:"How could something look bigger when the color is darker? The opposite of what you said is true! " wot? I don't understand. Pls define

  • To, DavyJ Unknown 2005-02-01 22:34:47 How could something look bigger when the color is darker? The opposite of what you said is true!

  • and lets not get on the smaller diff the size diff is minimal you couldnt tell when they are sitting next to each other well na840 looks bigger cuz it is very dark.....and m900 can hold bigger size memory card and has more photo settings then n840.... and has a nice camera style about it and when fliped open yu can take group photo. and mp3 sound quailty is better for rongtone and for listening on m900 mp3 ringtone has to be set low for n840 cuz it is to distorted!and the clip on the back that hold the battery in like to get caught and pop open when it gets stuck....and also in photo with to much light the nec becomes very bright and washed out photo, m900 has setting to bring the objects stand out and look great... nec dosent...i would say the nec 1.3 ccd cam is very comparible to this 2mpcmos but the 1.3 is richer and more vibrant

  • bluetooth how nice to bad it is limited.... and what is the point of having it if you have your headphones plugged in all the time.... and to who didnt belive me that i have booth are you jealious or something that i can afford booth? huh? i collect phones i have tones so dont tell me to shut up, and size really dosent matter cuz there are lots of big phones out there and by the way the n840 is kinda tacky looking with its plain insides and orange glowing keypad at least m900 is stylish and modern.... and i wil say this to the end m900 cam is better if you want a better one then m900 then get sharp 902 a true 2mp ccd cam unlike nec 2mp CMOS.... and tiny outside screen m900 is much bigger and clearer

  • The NEC N840 is much and much better than the m900...it's smaller, has bluetooth, the true 2.0MP CMOS camera is very good and just look at the extras you get with it! The Mitsu just can't live up to it

  • magazines have compared both the n840 & the m900, and the winner is the n840 in most catagories. when you use the zoom function of the m900 to take a picture, you will find the picture a little blurred.

  • STFU DavyJ stop lying you don't have both.

  • you can use infrared to transfer things like ringtones/mp3s (unlike most samsung phones). no huge movies, as someone else has already mentioned, the phone supports up to 256MB max. as for reception, it works well for me...both sounds and clarity. it will depends on how many of the 4 bands your mobile network supports though. for me, since my network supports 2 of the 4, i get great reception. but then again, if your network provider only supports gsm 1900, there's no point in saying how this phone receives less reception than others. back to the camera....since i don't own an M900, i might be a little biased towards the N840. when i said the N840 pics turned out better, that was actually the opinion from my other friends who compared pics that we took. to me, i think the N840 takes excellent pics. the fact that the photos turn out much better than the N830, which uses CCD, will make you wonder if CMOS is really THAT bad afterall.....

  • no it wont play movies like that, maybe a music vid at most! the card reader will only go up to 256, you can transfer thru infred, i would sugest the m900 over this phone i do have booth and m900 has better reception and card can go up to 500 but should handle 1 gig when it comes out, and it has infered, the only diff is the screen is much clearer on m900 and nicer and the outside screen is much better and the cam takes better pictures then n840

  • Thank you unknown for your great input. Just 2 more questions before I run out and buy this phone: 1)Can the infrared transfer files such as mp3 to another phone? (My girlfriend has the K500i, I really hope it could do that) 2)Can this phone play a big movie such as "Spiderman 2" Again, your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cheers

  • i really do not see how you think the pic is better then m900, m900 is so much better i have booth of these phones and compared pictures thurly! m900 stands out much better

  • this phone is actually quad-band. it doesn't have full bluetooth support, only can use it for bluetooth headset. as for mp3 ringtones, u can convert ur mp3s using a program and have mp3 ringtones. but i really wouldn't recommend doing that cuz the mp3 ringtones end up REALLY loud...gives me headaches. plus, the Midi ringtones sound AMAZING anyway. the 2MP camera on this phone is great! if you've tried the camera on the NEC N830 (CCD) before, you'd know that u see squares on the screen when taking photos. N840, even though it uses CMOS, the photos turn out much better...even better than the ones taken by M900, when i compared photos with my friend. the phone's got everything....mp3 player, camera, great ringtones....selling for around $480USD in hong kong right now (only came out a few days ago). even the price is great....what more can u ask for??

  • Are the Colours as vivid as the motorola E398?

  • I mean its features are good, but even k700i has full bluetooth. Why would phones with better features like gx32 or above have limited bluetooth? Cut costs?

  • ON some sites, they say this phone is only tri-band, while this site says its quad-band, can anyone verify? Mp3 ringtone? Part ringtone with music cutter or the whole song? Is it definite that bluetooth is like GX32? If so, I'm really disappointed.

  • meh the d500 cam is alright it is very very misty tho wich effects the sharpness of the pictures.....

  • Not once have I ever tried to compare the quality of digital cameras to phone cameras. I just think it's absurd that CMOS sensors are being so negatively described here. If you just take a look at the posts by DavyJ down here, he's basically saying that CMOS = shit, just because it's CMOS. So I just took the example with the Nikon digital camera to show that: If even high end cameras use CMOS sensors and are able to take pictures for professional use with them, why shouldn't phone cameras use CMOS as well? Take the D500, it takes excellent pictures, every review I've read agrees that the quality is easily comparable to S700, which uses a CCD (read mobile-review.com or the official review here on this site). Saying CCD is better than CMOS just because it's a CCD, without actually judging the quality of the sensors, is just plain stubborness and lack of logic.

  • To unknown: Jesus Christ, can you at least read everything I wrote before you start making smartass comments like that? I stated clearly that my point wasn't to compare a $5000 highend camera with a cameraphone, but to point out that a CCD sensor isn't better than all the other CMOS sensors out there just because it's a CCD! My point was that a high quality CMOS can be as good or better than a CCD sensor.

  • but anyways, whatever it is, purchasing a phone is all about personal preferences. You buy it coz you like it and you think it's good. So, it doesn't matter what people say. Both M900 and NEC has their own advatanges and it's up to you which one you prefer. Whether CMOS or CCD (although I still think CCD is better), they are of no match for real cameras and that's a fact. If wanna take pictures, get a real camera.

  • joe: no one is saying m900's CCD sensor is a match for high end cameras of course. LOLZ. Of course a phone's camera is no match when you compare it with a real camera. If you really want clear pictures, buy a digital camera or whatever. Just my opinion. As far as phone cameras are concerned, CCD is still better when it comes to quality. Tried and true. My opinion

  • It used to be the general opinion that CCD is better than CMOS, but as far as consumer electronics go, that's more or less a truth of the past. With recent improvements in CMOS sensors, more and more manufacturers are switching over to CMOS sensors in high-end cameras and mobile phones. Even Sony, one of the biggest CCD players in the market, is now going over to use CMOS in their mobile phone cameras. (source: www.itmedia.co.jp/mobile/) To put things a bit on the extreme, you think your tiny puny CCD sensor in your M900 is any match at all for the Nikon D2X's CMOS sensor? Of course not! Now, before you run off and scream "That's because the Nikon costs $5000!!!", here's my point: CCD sensors are in theory better than CMOS sensors with a number of advantages. But the problem with CCD sensors, is that they are relatively big, much more complex to produce, and they are much more expensive to manufacture. So, using the amount of money, the chances are that you'll get a CMOS sensor just as good or better than a CCD for the same price. So your point of saying that your M900 is better than the N840 just because the M900 uses a CCD sensor, is really not valid at all, and I hope someday you can get that in your head. As I've said before to the others here, please ignore biased opinions and judge the quality for yourselves if possible. (And here's MY opinion of the M900: The pictures it takes look "sharp and crisp" as DavyJ puts it, but that's only because the M900 uses a filter which increases the contrast and sharpens the edges, giving all the pictures a typical Photoshop-touched up look to them. And that's why I think the S700, GX30 and N840 look better than the M900, because they all look much more natural. But hey, that's MY opinion, you are free to investigate and compare for yourselves.)

  • it's true that CCD is alittle better than CMOS. CCD is more sensitive to light than CMOS. CCD is being used in laptop, high end cameras. Especially Fuji's 3rd generation CCD. It's definitely good.

  • well thanks for that, considering it is a fact the cmos is not as good as a ccd espicialy a super ccd fujinon censor that is in the m900..... cmos gives a lower picture quaility . CCD is better then CMOS and the point i am trying to get at if you are getting a new phone and you want picture quality then M900 is the way to go, if you dont like mitsubishi then the Sharp 902 is the way to go or if you just like NEC this is also a great phone i have personal use with it but the cam just is not as good :(

  • DavyJ, grow up! Can you stop telling lies about the N840!? "and on huge reason the m900 cam is better is because its not lousy CMOS like this is..... thats why even tho this is a true 2mp a ccd interpolated 2mp will be better resoulution!" "have you looked at the samples the cam on this phone is a CMOS like the worst......even tho it is 2MP" You have no idea what you are talking about! CMOS or CCD, it's about the quality of the sensor. Many high end cameras from Canon and Nikon which cost around $1500 US Dollars use CMOS. Take the Nikon D2X for example, which costs $5000, also uses CMOS. So your statements about the "lousy CMOS" which the N840 uses are just 100% bullshit. A good CMOS sensor can take just as good or even better pictures than CCD sensors. CMOS also has the benefit of being less battery-consuming, and they tend to take better pictures with less noise when the lighting is not so good. To all the other readers out there, please ignore DavyJ. Pictures taken with the N840 are excellent. He is just throwing dirt at other phones just because he bought the M900 himself. I'm not saying the N840 is the perfect phone or anything, but I don't like people saying unfounded things about it either. (And please note that I currently own a Samsung E700, and I am neither planning to buy the N840 OR the M900. I'm only defending the N840 here because I hate biased opinions from people who want to present them as facts)

  • its also like would you like to have a watch to tell time, a watch with a timer, and a watch that has a alarm....no you want it all in one

  • Cuz i dont want to carry a mp3 player a camera and cell so i want the best all in one??? dosent that make sense>?

  • C'mon people. Don't really understand what the fued is about camera phones these days. If you like the phone then buy it. Why spend so much on the best camera phone when you could get a cheap 3-4mp camera that beats any phone. The bluetooth for this phone concerns me more.

  • Hahahhahaa that is so funny like anyone is going to pay 850bucks for this phone.... the cam is a CMOS come on this phone should be like 500 bucks at the most!

  • have you looked at the samples the cam on this phone is a CMOS like the worst......even tho it is 2MP

  • 1.3MP is 1.3MP interpolated or not, it ain't going to give you 2MP true resolution. just a sales pitch!

  • well i am sorry we arguing over the cam but in the end the cam is what makes it work so much.... it is the biggest feature. and the menus are equaly as slow as m900, if you keep lots of free space on m900 main space(15mb) it will not be slow! and the sms will become slow if you have to many sms stored! m900 rocks!

  • should you guys not be arguing about the FEATURES of the phone rather than the camera? i mean, what about speaker clarity or signal reception? how about navigating the menu system, is it fast/slow? i read that the m900 menu is slow and can get annoying at times. how about commenting on the REAL issues here. it's only 1 feature on a phone! why scream and shout about 1 feature when the main use of the handset is to take PHONE CALLS. i can guarantee you'll be using the phone to take calls rather than use the camera every bleeding minute. get a grip you guys

  • this phone has the same failure as the Sharp GX-32. The bluetooth is only available for bluetooth handsfree. You wouldn't be able to use it for picture,or files transfer at all!! so it's no difference than NOT having bluetooth!!!! I really do love the size of the screen and it's japanese phone!! it's a "japanese drama phone" but still..very disappointed..

  • and on huge reason the m900 cam is better is because its not lousy CMOS like this is..... thats why even tho this is a true 2mp a ccd interpolated 2mp will be better resoulution!

  • and so it doesn't seem one sided for the m900 this is a photo i took and NOT EDITED much sharper.....

  • this si a photo from the nec n840 in nice bright sunshine on a beatiful day to bad the phot isnt nice.... M900 is so much better then this and its a 1.3 interpolated cam thats kinda sad

  • it will cost about 800 canadian dollars, after i converted it from china. just to let you guys know its an awesome fone, but its much too expensive

  • This is will be one of THE BEST phones out in the market. It was announced Nov. 11 that it would be out but now it's Jan. and still no sign of it...

  • if you think bluetooth is important then get this one, if not, get m900

  • NEC takes good pictures but so does M900.....I own M900 and has tried out NEC too. Picture quality is not really bout pixel counts but technology as well......even though m900 has a 1.3 MP camera which can produce pictures of 2MP quality, the quality is stunning and my friends agreee too. It's up to personal preference

  • tryin to make my mind up whether to buy n840 or m900, read all ur guys comment and phone reviews on both phones.its all for and against...favourin m900 for its camera effects still wondering whether n840 takes better fotos cos both phone features are similar.someone who seen pictures who has phone give me some feedback....and is nec840 max meeory only up to 256? plz reply asap..i need decide next two days

  • The NEC will be probably cost more money than the Mitsu, so the phones apply to different users and i don't think they can be compared.

  • thats true it does not have bluetooth but to me that does not matter cuz i dont use it. i belive that the m900 is not made to compete with this phone, it may not be a true 2mp but it is a 2 mp camera mp3 two color screens mp3 player and java apps, seems pretty much the same so i wouls say they can compete......

  • the opinions of the NEC picture quality will always be personal, some think it's better than the m900 some think it isn't. But the point here is that the N840 is not made to compete withe the m900, but with the Sharp TM200. If you look at the features and the design of the Sharp and the NEC you will see why. i also never seem to find any M900 user/defender that even dares to open their mouthes about the bluetooth difference?!?

  • both the nec n840 & the mitsubishi m900 are available in my country & i have tried both. the n840 is a real 2 megapixel & the m900 is not. the camera & picture quality of the nec is definately better. one major problem with nec hand phone is the standby time........always too short!

  • well you can compare the nec and m900 photo and there is a huge diff m900 is crisp and clear and nec is detailed but blurry and pixely..... nec makes there owns screens plus samsung screens were good but latley they have sucked i was looking at d500 and it looks like shit compared to m900.

  • the NEC n840 is better than the M900 because it has Bluetooth, a true 2 megapixel camera and probably a better screen (rumor has it that Samsung makes the screens for NEC) also i think that the N840 is made to be compared with the Sharp TM200, and not the lower-class Mitsubishi M900...

  • my only worry is the lowlight performance on N840 M900 is famous for lowlight performance (that's one of the only benefits of super-honeycomb CCD sensors to me really) and the mp3 ringtones support is still not 100% sure yet. i see half the reviews claiming AAC and not mp3, then the other half claiming full mp3 unlimited support. i dunno what to believe. i've read all previews online already zol sina pconline etech it168 ringhk everything

  • The links you posted are not working. "Forbidden You do not have permission to get the requested URL from this server." But anyway, I'm not going to argue anymore on this. I know that you got the M900, and would defend it no matter what. Just wanted the others who are wondering to get a M900 or a N840 to be have more options, as I definitely think the N840 takes much better pictures. To me, even the N830 takes much better pictures than M900. That's my personal opinion. Punctum.

  • to joe, i wouyld like you to take those photo i posted and circle the "edgy- jaggy" parts it looks pretty smooth to me.... and crisp

  • 1. So you do own a M900. So much for unbiased opinions... 2. I never said that the screen on N840 is any better than M900. But since you mention it, I think the quality of the screens should be pretty similar. Both have same resolution, colordepth and about the same size. 2. They are not releasing "a crappy prototype", since the phone is not out on sales yet. The review which you referred to was definitely using a prototype. I have seen reviews in January which used different menus. 3. I never said that the N840's menus are better than M900. They might very well be crappylooking even in the finalized version. I just wanted to say that the menus on M900 are not brilliant looking either. (100X better my ass) 4. So the picture I was referring to wasn't looking sharp enough to you? That's fine... the others can take a look and decide for themselves. I have seen many pictures taken with the M900. If sharp for you means over-jaggy edges and full of noise, fine. I think the pictures from N840 looks much more natural... but that's me. If you are so happy with your M900, fine... The others might want to take a look at the N840 before getting the M900. That's just my UNBIASED opinion.

  • also about the ugly m900 menu well i will let people choose wich look better.... m900 1122134_3 .htm N840 6.htm i personaly think that the n840 res or menu style comapers at all with the m900... so much clearer and better menu display

  • okay..... there is no way the screen quality is better then m900 because it is even clearer then a sharp screen.... and that pic you showed look alright but not sharp, compared to what my photo out in bad wheather, also at least the menu's on the m900 they are nice bold clear text not pixely looking and those ugly icons on the desktop of the n840 is gross. and the screen on the outside screen is so much better then the n840. and all the reviews i have seen cant all be protoypes and why would they want to release a crapy protoype? whenever i get them in the telus store i work at they actualy look good. e8b/5441/__sr_/743a.jpg?phgGE3BBh40a4iLM 8b/5441/__sr_/b542.jpg?phgGE3BBZ80kQttq

  • Internal screen of N840 is 262K.

  • DavyJ, I'm sorry, but were you smoking pot? The pictures taken with the N840 are far better than those "fake" 2MP photos of M900. Even at 1,3 MP, pictures have tons of noise and jaggy edges on M900. Even pictures by Samsung D500 looks better in comparision. The phone reviewed was a prototype, and the menus are not finalized. But on the other hand, menus on the N830 wasn't exactly pretty either... But it's a joke that you say the M900 is 100X better, because the menus on there are not any better. Only the main menu looks nice on the M900. The rest is just text menus! That's not any better than N840 (which by the way, also has a Chinese-English (E-C) dictionary). I think this picture taken by the N840 beats anything taken by the M900: And this was taken in bad weather! I do agree that the menus need a lot of work, though. Hopefully the retail version will be improved. I hope you didn't not just brush off the N840 because you've just bought a M900 or something... I have neither of those two phones, not really planing on buying either of them. But I just thought M900 did not deserve that kind of praise, as it's far from perfect itself.

  • looks for your self 6.htm the icon near the botom right after the last ext with a charecter that looks like a T with a little arm mean next you can see all the things of this phpne

  • i am so so sorry...... i wanted this phone bad but i just read a full review with pics very detailed and this phone is so not cool any more.... the 2mp camera sucks very grainy and red m900 is so much better like 100x better, the menus and interface are ugly and plain, the screen is nasty and pixely m900 is better the GSC screen.... and its fat but looks so cute!!!!! but the screens are both only 65k this phone is not worth the money:(

  • can it play MP3 ringtones?thanks.

  • when is this phone going to be available for purchase in the us!!!!!

  • When and where is this model available for purchase????? I'm sure it says "CHINA MOBILE" so it must be available in China already. Need to know how to order in the US!

  • Really really looking forward for this model to be available in the US! Spec look good and it's NEC, so the quality should be good.

  • this phone design is the finest of the NEC company(my opinion).yhis phone fulfill all the feature i want, bluetooth and mp3.i like it very much.although i haven't hold it on my hand(haven't on market in malaysia)but i like it when i see it from the picture.it suits more to the boys.i give it a 9 out of 10 star.this is my opinion to the phone.

  • may i know why can buy NEC hp? which country? thx

  • The phone is not yet available for sales yet, how do you know the 2MP is so good??? Are you living in China, it says "China Mobile" in the front logo so it must be lauching in China first.

  • This phone can take great pictures with it's "real 2mp" CCD camera unlike the Mitsubishi M900.

  • this cellphone is really my dream!but where i can buy it? and how much does it cost?

  • i prefer the m900 cos of the design....it also has a mp3 player

  • is this phone chargable through a usb cable?

  • the I-mode version of this model wil be called the N430i and will only be available in countries with I-mode serviceproviders.(KPN Netherlands e-Plus Germany etc..)

  • skater42 you're a pest on this forum site

  • Will it coming to Malaysia?,I want to buy it.

  • This is a GSM 900/1800/1900 phone?? When is it going to be available in the US? This will be a great 2MP camera phone if the GSM is true and not locked to Vodafone!

  • too bad singapore don have nec

  • Sorry. I missed Mitsubishi add NEC. They are best.

  • My dreams will never come through. =(( I live in a country where it is impossible to by Mitsubishi phones. This phone is BEST I ever seen.

  • Nice phone.... Ok, i dont know why i like Jap phones... eventhough they're huge, and some are bulky, and some with low features...is just that you have the style most westerners dont have... japan style. I wish DoCoMo (Japan 'local' brand) phones are sold worldwide...sigh..

  • Will it coming to Malaysia and how about with the price?

  • to skater42, maybe the guy below you has only had experiences with NEC 3G phones so doesn't know they also make GSM phones.

  • USIM? I thought only UMTS phones use USIM cards? This isn't a 3G phone, is it? So why would it have USIM locks?

  • You can find the features on GSMarena or In addition, it also has got a flash, a wonderful phone and I got some suspects about the USIM problem, I wish that hasn't been a problem on that phone.

  • How much does this phone cost in China, Beijing and when will it be released

  • Besides to this, wishing a flash. However, this phone has got really good features. It's price will define the place in the market.

  • I don't think this phone is supposed to have a TV Tuner in it. that's the N940. This phone is wicked though! Very nice! I would prefer a SHARP, but this phone has better looks than the V902SH or V802SH as a matter of fact. I also think that this NEC will not be locked like the Vodafone models...it says China Mobile on this one, but I think that it's unlocked...need to do more research. The only good thing about the V902/802SH are that they support WCDMA. But of course locked to Vodafone. So if you can live without UMTS, get the NEC. cheers, skater42

  • does it really support T.V?

  • Unknown 2004-11-02 18:14:36, maybe you know how it will cost?

  • Im considering getting either this phone, or the sharp 902, any recommendations on which phone i should get????

  • there isn't much difference between this and the m900, but since this a NEC you can expect better quality

  • Edgy!

  • I Prefer This!!!

  • i think that the phone is nice with QVGA screen and 2 Mpx but wanted to know wich is better: this or Mitsubishi M900?
