  • Battery life was designed to work with android 4.4 actually. So, is the update and not the battery or the phone wich have the problem. If you keep it on 4.4 it will be perfect.

  • This phone runs asphalt overdrive in 60fps on ultra graphics, s8 barerly runs on high 30fps. This is the reality. Best phone ever, along with note 7. Rest In Peace. Hell, even s8 is so old looking comparing with today standards. I miss those times... and yea, galaxy alpha is my moms actual phone, she loved it, so did I. Best size, battery was a pity, especially at android 5. Have a good day people!

  • People who have a problem with the battery on this phone should do the following: 1. Restart the phone, 2. Set the phone to Flying mode for about 10 minutes. After that, my phone's battery can last for 2-3 days, and before that only 8h. If it happens that the battery drains fast again, just repeat it. Greeting

I am someone who previously had a hard time keeping a phone for more than a few months, but this one lasted much longer, it's a really aesthetically pleasing phone and is plenty fast, however the fast part does go away if you update to android lollipop, so it's a really good phone as long as you don't update, I kept mine on KitKat and it lasted me through all of 2018 performing very well, it's truly an awesome phone and really durable too

  • Bad phone... no wifi coverage no signal reception etc (100euro smartphone performed better) overheats battery runs out after 7-8 hrs or 1 hour if you play something.. the good part looks great sturdy phone good screen and still good enough performance. if I had a chance to buy this or the 100 euro smartphone again id buy the 100euro one..

  • Hello The protective case is not at all a bad thing. The device will not be uglier but the case will change its look. Even though this will take place put it, it is a bad idea not to put it because it is dangerous for the status of your phone.

  • When battery loses capacity, it charges and discharges quickly. You should replace the battery.

  • It was the same for me and few days ago I bought a new battery. It helped a lot! Of course no miracles to expect with such a poor efficiency but at least you have about 8-12 hours of life till you come back home in the evening. Unfortunately you have to avoid heavy usage for that :)

  • I have it and its camera (front) it is excellent. I bought it a long time ago and i am very pleased from everything about it. Very powerfull and beautiful galaxy phone to have. BUT..... If you buy it you must be too carefull not to brake it; i mean its sensitive(it scratces easyly). Althought its unique, i recoment you not to buy it. Am pleased to have it (it was limited edition in my country) but as i telled before it scraches easyly, even with case or not. Sorry for the bkah,blah and for spelling mistakes.....

  • There is some info on xda forum about use A3 2016 2300 mAh battery in Alpha. Someone show pictures and say it works good. You can try it and us if it works. I have oryginal 2500 mAh battery in my Alpha but this 2300 mAh not bad idea, much bigger then 1860 mAh standard Alpha battery.

  • I love my Galaxy Alpha, people still ask me what phone I have because it's so unique and sleek, but the battery is draining way too fast. I always take a powerbank if I'm heading out because it'll drop to 50% without being used within an hour. Really disappointing that Samsung isn't updating the A3, it's the same screen size but I don't want to buy the 2017 model. The new Sony XZ2 Compact looked interesting as it's almost the same size, but then I saw it's twice as thick! Surely I'm not the only person left that still prefers a smaller phone.

  • Those with power drain, disable geo news, use 3g instead of 4g, disable gps if not in use, auto power save and manual light adjustment (try to stay in 15-30% zone), disable magazine, in playstore deselect auto update, or it might scan all the time.. This is basically the biggest phone wakeup battery drainer. If rooted you can install one app called shutup google, it fixes doze and removes wakup all the time. And by packet disabler you can disable some extra bloatware.. Well sometimes there can be a app draining it, it starts to use bigcores and heats phone a lot, I was monitoring cpu/freq. once in Kernel Auditor and then something went rouge in the background., I saw battery drop 1% almost every minute, when I removed some free apps (full of adds), and cleared phone app cache partition it stopped and phone went back to normal. Actually now that I think about it, you can access this odin mode not rooted, press volume up+home key+power key while the phone is completely off. And select clear cache partition, reboot and wait few moments, maybe reboot again after a while, now it should be all ok. I have this phone 850F since early 2015 and its still good, just shame i didnt buy that 2500mah extended kit when I had the chance. I bought few custom batteries and the only ok so far is one german Patona 1860mah, no nfc on it though. IronKing 2100mah looked promising too, first few 5-6months. I got extra 1hr OST, max I ever saw was 6.29hrs on lolipop (unrooted), otherwise I got this on kitkat a lot -6hrs always, then something glitched and its capacity droped to stock 1860 or a little lower.. That said, new stock battery is ok too, mine lasted ~ 15months until it started to drop more, but there are a lot of fakes on the market now.

I checked one YT video and it does look similar in size, etc. I'm able to get ~ 5hrs OST with rooted stock rom and extra disabled apps, usually 1hr - 20% or 10% if just browsing using samsung internet 20-30% brightness (basic powersaving on). This A3 2016 battery is 2300mah and that would be great, extra 1hr OST for sure..

  • Waste Phone i bought in Chennai for Rs-38000/- with bill. The batter is worst if put 100% charge and if you use for 30 mins call and 30 minutes browsing the phone charge will be 40%. Phone keeps on Hangs. whole day charge will not stand. If i would have bought a gold ring for this money at that time, by this time, i would have sold it Rs-40000/- 2000 extra profit i would have earned.   • Miss this phone every day. If I get back in time, I would still buy this phone. Unfortunately no one had known that this phone will be killed at lollipop. No one. And sub 5 inch phones are getting extremely rare these days. Iphone 8 comes to the rescue.

  • I've got three words to describe this phone : Completely Wasted Potential ! I cannot even start to express how I liked this phone when I was using it back in the days. Sharp display, small form factor, bright display, bright colors, snappy processing, feels solid, has a very nice look. I got a spare one at home and everytime my current phone was giving up or having some kind of problem, I was gladly using back this phone until the repairs were done or I have a new phone. But why ? Why did they stop the updates at Android Lollipop ? Why did it have only 2GB of RAM ? And most of all... Why did they put a battery that is so low and a software that is so inefficient at managing battery power ? (I could BARELY last the day with this phone with normal operation... without battery saving) If it wasn't for these three annoying factors, I think I would've used this phone till it died... unfortunately the battery life alone reminds me why I only used it occasionally. It wasn't acceptable at the time it was released that a smart phone had a battery was dying so fast. So overall, What's questionnable about this phone ? The amount of RAM. What's enjoyable about this phone ? Everything else except the battery and power efficiency ! What kills this phone ? The battery size and power efficiency.

  • Same problem. I changed battery few months ago and it improved but sucks soo hard. 2 hours mobile data and 3 hours wifi on facebook at it's absolutely best. And on kitkat I could get easily 4 hours of light games. Dissapointing.

  • I bought my Alpha last winter. It still had KitKat, so I immediately upgraded to lollipop. I really don't know how it would have run with KitKat, but it is horrible now. It bogs down constantly, so that I even have to restart the phone sometimes just to get it to work. I have two memory cleaning apps on the phone to try to keep it clear so it will work. And because this is the AT&T model, I cannot go back to KitKat because they have provided no way to do that, and so far there has not been a successful rooting method provided. I can't wait until I can get another phone. This is the worst one I've ever owned.

  • Completely agree. I had it and like it so much, it was during the time when galaxy S5 was launched and it even beat S5 for performance benchmark. Too bad, mine experienced water damage after I put the phone together with my swimming cap and goggle after swim. LCD digitizer for Galaxy Alpha is crazily expensive due to its rare screen size unfortunately. I'm now using LG G5, but still once in a while missed my Alpha :P

  • Same here. I can't understand why a3 2015 1gb and s5 mini got 6.0.1. Why I couldn't be happy with my alpha?? A5 2016 lags like shit in games while alpha runs 60fps easily. And I am too poor to afford a flagship. Prices are raised as **** and note FE(7) that I liked has the SAME price as he original note 7 in my country. YES! SAME PRICE 800 euros! Just like note 7, alpha was discontinued in just 2 months. These 2 I loved so much. Masterpieces...

  • It has gorrila glass 4. It is shatter resistant upto 1 meter 80% probability accordint to corning. It was 25cm drop. Sorry but samsung is really annoying. With thermal throttle and game tuner underclock. Rubber plastic back on alpha is very scratch resistant. Even today it has ZERO marks. If samsung wants glossy back, then go with ceramic or make gorrila glass 5 shatter resistant. But they prefer charging 350 euros for display. The best srategy ever. Since 2015 samsung is a nightmare for me. Shattering and scratching sooo easy. Protection that is incompatible with curved display. Or affecting the touch. But like I said. If people like this, go buy it. If a5 2018 will come with edge screen BYE BYE samsung. 2017 is the year when I want to not use a phone anymore. :)

  • You broke the back of the a5 because it's glass and glass is very easy to break compared to aluminium and plastic Glass phones may look premium and all that but they will break if youre not careful with them, i much more prefer aluminium phones But yeah you're right

  • I am like WTF after reading this. Once again samsung has proved that they only care about money. They make shitty updates. Display cracks from 30cm drop and it costs 350 euros s8 and 400 euros s8 plus. Hell right now samsung browser lags like shit when I scroll or write a comment. I am done with samsung. I am thinking . Should I trade alpha and a5 2016 for s8 + difference of money ? NO! I cracked the back of a5 2016 from 25cm drop on tile. For that tiny crack I have to pay 350 euros if it happens to s8 display ??? My god in my country 250euros is the income for an employee (on a month). And display is 350 euros!!!!! WTF. And s8 is 780 euros even today... and A 2017 is equiped with snapdragon 625 level chipset. It sucks. If you want to empty your pockets go with samsung. Otherwise stay away or buy J series or A For me, personally, replacing screens and phones every 6 months sucks. IT'S JUST A PHONE! Xperia XZ1 Compact is coming to save me. It's the last phone that I can use it comfortably. I LOVE big screens, but they are to heavy to hold comfortably. Miss the alpha...

They brought it back in the shop here yesterday and i hoped the price was down but nope it's still at 680$ I mean i'm not trying to say the phone is bad but the Galaxy S6 was sold here for 650$ and not only is it cheaper but is also like 3 times better than the Alpha so what gives Samsung?

  • I had to choose between s5 , alpha , a5. Because s5 was too big for my hands in 2015, I got alpha. But s5 got 6.0.1 with the latest patches. It scores 60k points in Antutu. Every time I see the s5 I am nervous. I don't have money to buy another flagship, and a5 2016 lags like hell on lowest settings in almost every game. Even in youtube lags in 1080p a bit. And I see that s8 is 700 euros and s7 edge is 500 euros . And also this generation of samsung phones scratch very easily. Alpha after 2 years( of dropping on concrete ) it has 2 deep scratches, and some tiny invisible as well. While a5 2016 I took off the screen protector a month ago and I put a flip case on it. It's FULL of scratches. Christ... no drop, no table. Maybe it has a protective coating pre-installed?

  • This phone... showed me what a flagship means. That the quality matters, not quantity. They made A series to make profit. They were a JOKE. No gyro no screen mirror. Nothing. Just money and look. And they forces us to buy their sh*t. I didn't wanted 6.0 because that update coudn't save this phone. I wanted to just make a single OS update stable. They can't even do this. They can't make a battery that lasts one year without exploding,degrading or swelling. They can't make a body that last a foot drop on concrete without cracking it. This generation sucks. I recommend to download kitkatt from sammobile.com and flash it again. I have had this 0hine since 3 years and am still on kitkatt and no problems found yet

  • Maybe you just didn't make the upgrade process fine. Something went wrong during it. Try to put some clean rom without upgrading.

  • Why dont you just upgrade to Android 7 with the Lineage OS Custom Rom, works like a charm.

  • You are lucky. I wish I hadn't any problem with this phone since it cost me 400 euros in 2015. So the lollipop is not the issue. Probably next year I can get the s7 for 350-400 euros working perfectly fine. Or the lg g6

  • Don't use any cleaner app, they are the one who creates the problem in your phone. I never have any performance issue with lollylop, but yes Ram management was better with kitkat

  • May be there is some problem in ur phone/ any problematic apps. Overating problem - No problem at all , it overheats and drains battery only when I turn on gps. Battery - I am still getting 3 hours SOT with 8-10 hours (3g/4g on 70% times) on battery after full charging. Bootloops, never got any bootloops since dec 2014

  • I bought this phone last winter because I wanted as small a phone as possible with a battery that can be replaced. It still had KitKat on it, so I let it upgrade to Lollipop right away. It has turned out to be one of the worst phones I've ever had. The memory management is terrible. It is constantly bogging down and getting stuck. I have a couple of cache cleaners on it, and one of them keeps an icon up in the notification bar. Throughout the day, I have to tap that icon to get the phone going again. I absolutely detest this phone, and we'll get another one as soon as I am able. I am also disgusted with AT&T for not providing a means to take it back to KitKat, and with Samsung for not providing an upgrade to Marshmallow.

  • After revisiting this phone (one more chance) the home button is semi-broken and took the fingerprint scanner with it. Battery drains 10% in 10 minutes but charges 10% in 7-8 minutes(battery is changed and the storage is 45% full). Still far better gpu performance than a3 2017 and a5 2016 and a7 2016. Because of overheating , boot loop, horrible battery and super buggy system this is a pile of junk. A series is a huge step back. I could stick with alpha in 2018 easily but I simply can't because shamesung forces us to buy their A series which cannot play 1080p 60fps videos and don't have screen mirroring. In conclusion: STAY AWAY FROM SHAMESUNG. Probably s7 can be a good phone even in 2018 but who knows what will happen with this one as well. R.I.P Alpha.

  • I had same problem. Then i wiped the cache. and made sure the it will only connect to 2,4ghz wlan then i changed connection to WCDMA/ GSM only without LTE Since then my battery lasts normal again

  • Hi Samsung Galaxy Alpha users, this phone is poor battery. the phone should on charge in Home - In Car during Travelling - and in Office. During out door travelling do not take risk with this phone, the battery will completely offs. The phone has hanging problem during making and receiving calls. you will feed to break the phone during emergencies. Once again Battery is worst..................The purpose of phone is for emergency reach a person. but this is not possible in this model. Worst phone totally my money wasted.

  • @apolodor 3.5 Hours SOT With WiFi always on and played newly launched Injustice 2 heavy game as well. I have attached screenshots, considering I am using the same battery since Dec 2014, it isn't bad. It also charges from 50 to 90% in just 27 min. My phone is Exynos G850Y Indian one.

  • I changed the battery but is a small improvement. Every super heavy game drains battery like a lightning strike. Even 1.5 year ago battery wasn't that great. I could get 2.5 hours screen time on light games and that was the best I could get. A5 2016 wipes the floor with alpha in terms of battery. A5 2016 lasts 4hours on light gaming and 2.5hours on heavy gaming. I thought alpha will get MM but samsung said:"suck it. Buy A series" (BUT A SERIES CAN'T PLAY A VIDEO IN 1080 60 FPS and they cost 450 euros. I am seriosly considering throw alpha in trash. Also I have to restart it 2 times a day because screen freezing is pissing me so hard!!!

  • I think u guys need to buy new battery, buy it from official samsung Care. I am fine with this phone's battery, it works from 10 am to 7 pm for me with medium usage and 5 hours for extremely high usage. I only experience huge battery drain when GPS is turned on, otherwise no issue. But yes, try factory reset and check old battery performance before buying new one My friend is having Galaxy S8 and I am not seing huge battery life difference. I gets 3.5 Hours Screen on Time even after 2.5 years and my friend's new S8 gets 4.5 hours We should also consider that Alpha takes 80 min. To full charge and S8 takes 105 min.

  • After updating via odin , fingerprint works randomly. I swipe 10 times, nothing . This happens at least 5 times a day. Fingerprint is pure shit. I hate this phone so much.

  • When i try to unlock my phone with fingerprint it says me "Fingerprint sensor error ocurred" and after this it doesn't require me the backup pasword but the phone stuck in the emergency mode. I restart the phone, tryed to switch out of the emergency mode but still nothing.... Finally i was forced to make a factory reset and lost all my photos (alpha has not sd card slot) and the fingerprint worked only for two days more. After this the same story: Fingerprint sensor error, emergency mode and wont let me to unlock even with the backup pasword..... have anyone face this problem?

  • Every demanding game that I play lasts just one hour. It drains like a lightning strike. I have to use a charger everywhere. Samsung should have put 8.1 mm and battery could have been at least 2300 mah or 2200. Because of alpha I am looking for a phone that has excellent battery life like s8 or a7 2017

  • I've flashed succesfully the latest samsung patch via odin and i have smart manager (finally!!!!) And april 2017 security patch. My phone is from switzerland and I bought it in Roumania and it got one patch in september 2015

  • U can try it by flashing latest patch, and let me know. Epsil rom is based on Samsung official rom as well, just a difference is u got S7 UI in Galaxy Alpha, Animations are much smoother in this rom

  • Taking a look back to some older games like nfs NL ,SF2 , Dead trigger 2 , asphalt 8 this phone has no trouble smashing them. The problem with this phone is NOT the updates. The problem is the BATTERY. Just 1 hour screen time and i have just changed the battery. I regret going with alpha instead of s5. Don't do this .

  • It can't be any worse than 5.0.2. I upgraded as soon as I got the phone a few months ago because I thought Lollipop had to be better than Kitkat. Not so. The memory management is horrible. It's like going back to my HTC Eris. I have to keep an icon in my notification area to clean out the memory and another app to close running apps and use them many times throughout the day. I've read that other people have the same problem. If you have Kitkat, stay there, especially if you are with AT&T. They haven't provided a stock ROM to go back to if you don't like Lollipop. I'll get rid of this phone as soon as I can afford to.

  • After 2 months with custom Lollipo 5.0.2 i can say that the phone is bug free an performs like an S6. The battery life before was 5 hours max. After the update is 12 hours. A spoked with Samsung service and the told me that the battery a use is for sure fake. So i bought a new battery from Samsung service. With the same usage with the new battery i had alpha for about 1 day and 10hours with a single charge. Service told me that if you buy battery from e-bay or from an unofficial store there is 99% that is fake. The new battery performs 3times more belive it or not.

  • Good luck. My alpha is always at 70 degrees celsius even when browsing, battery life lasts just 1 hour or 1 hours 30 minute SOT compared to 3 hours in day one. And now, the charging cable is damaged and a tiny damage to the cable protection made the phone to charge or not charge. I love this phone so much but i hate it more than any other samsung phone.

  • Even my Alpha (SM-G850F) is performing well with 5.02 (no bugs) and I can be lucky since I have the original samsung extended battery kit (2500 mah instead of 1860), I asked Live Support (Chat) of Samsung Germany today and they said that there is no Marshmallow or even Nougat update planned. Sad, but I can live with it.

  • Actually it's better for it not to get an update because Marshmallow isn't designed for Alpha's components. Even if by some miracle it actually gets an update, expect the performance to drop.

  • I've been using my Alpha (Exynos) for more than a year and it works perfectly. I kept it at Android 4.4 since it works best with Alpha, not a single bug. Because of that, its battery life is actually pretty good, even a tad beyond average for some activities. Since I work as a phone dealer I've had many Alphas go through my hands and I can say with confidence that updating it to lollipop or anything beyond that is, almost always, a mistake. My only con with this phone is that the metal frame is prone to chipping.

If samsung had provided alpha (one of the most powerful phone ever built by them) with MM all of you would stuck with it for a long time. Now they force all of you to buy new A9 or A5...   • I don't like the cheap plastic feel of s5 so I bought the alpha in 2015 it's faster also coz it's octagon core and has 720p screen which is less rendering for the cpu than s5 1080p screen.

When she picked it up the next morning it was so hot it burnt her hand and she dropped it back on the table. It took 15 minutes to cool down enough to be picked up after it was unplugged. We contacted Samsung who gave us an incident number and said they get back to us in 24 hours. They didn't. We contacted them again and they asked for more info which we supplied again. Four days later they replied saying because it wasn't under warranty they weren't responsible, but if we wanted to take it to a Samsung authorized dealer we could get it fixed at our cost. My daughter already had it replaced by an Apple I-phone before they ever got back to us. Seems she's uncomfortable with having a phone charging on her nightstand that's likely to cause a fire while she's asleep. She loves her new I-phone and we won't be becoming one of Samsung's "Valued Customers" for any product ever again. We'll be standing behind their products as well as they do.

  • I believe that the phone used to work better with kit kat android rather than with lollipop. Battery is worst after the upgrade also speed redused. In my opinion if marsmallow it is designed to do better thinks well then an upgrade it's necessery. The phone with kitkat was fantastic.

  • This is the worst phone I have ever owned. The Nokia 3310 is a better phone then this piece of rubbish, I face many problems on this horrible device, one of which is that a 16yr old can last longer in bed then my phone's battery, after unplugging the charger I lose network which is a sign that my phone will die even at 97%. After plugging the charger in it may take up to 3 hours to turn the device back on because the Samsung logo will keep loading up (only on portable charger) the screen is peeling off so unwanted fluids like rain water can get in, my phone has worst lag then bo3 servers on a 1 bar connection, sometimes on low brightness i get a green flicking screen which stay on for a few hours or days and a restart doesn't fix this issue, this irritates my eyes and makes me feel like a blind bat at 3am

  • I am still possitive about this phone. Lolipop update is good but THE BATTERY sucks so hard on this OS. I had received lolipop in december 2015 :)) so there is still time till samsung android N. Obviously, as always, it's delayed, but it will be released eventually. I prefer delayed firmware over broken firmware, like most other companies'.

According to the span of handset's life it is more than a decades.Nowadays a person change his/her phone very often,so if we consider this thing this time is equal to decades.And in the other hand Galaxy S5 is getting Android M and it's older than Alpha. J7,J5,A7 etc many other handsets also received Android M which are much much lower specs and price than Alpha. And one more thing,you are Wright that samsung has confirm that it'll receive M and I'm sawing this on samsung offiacial site more than 5-6months but not happen so on actual practice.

  • I had the same problem, but the warranty was not expired and i returned it and they fixed it... It is factory problem and appears after a while... PS. I tried with factory reset and upgrade to a newer android version and that didn't help me...

  • i had the same problem. the Alpha has an issue with changing from 4G to 3G but if you turn 4G off and only used 3G you should have no problem.

  • If you're an "expert" yourself, you should note that running 64-bit apps takes a double amount of RAM (terrible for a phone with 2gb RAM), and 64-bit apps usually have no noticeable CPU nor GPU performance benefit (sometimes even worse performance), because that's the current state of the limited smartphone CPU and GPU architectures and the available compilers. Other than possibly a few extra percents of performance, 64-bit apps on a smartphone offer absolutely no benefit, at twice the RAM usage. The only theoretical benefit is that a single app is not limited to 4gb RAM usage, which is of course completely meaningless today in and many years to come.

  • The phone never shuts down when the battery is at 15%, only when it reaches 0. If yours does, you don't have a Galaxy Alpha. The phone has high performance even by today's standards and is not "laggy" at all. If yours is, you don't have a Galaxy Alpha or you have too many apps taking too much RAM, or some virus. The camera has no optical stabilizer, it's almost the same as Galaxy S5's camera, only a bit better in bright light, it has less purple / blue halo and better color balance. It's a quite decent phone camera even by today's standards. If you rely on Samsung's stupid software "stabilizer" feature to take the shot automatically for you at the right time, you will inevitably be disappointed. Disable that feature. As for your last paragraph full of curses, I think it's most likely that you should direct them at whoever sold you a fake phone.

  • This phone is garbage. Camera has a horrible stabilizer and will take photos without being in focus. If your a statue you might get a good one every once in a while. Battery is junk. Will shut down if your at 15%. General functions are very laggy, even after I sent it in to get reprogrammed and after I did a factory wipe.   • Heres the thing i had a samsung s6 7 months ago it was smooth for games but for some reason it lagged a lot when scrolling on web pages on the internet. Now i bought this alpha and its smoother and faster in games than the s6. The alpha is also smoother on the internet much faster than the s6 and does not lag like the s6 when scrolling on web pages. I can only presume because the resolution of the Alpha screen is 720p it's less stress on the cpu and runs faster than the s6 which has a 1440p screen. Samsung released this and only sold it for about 8 months i reckon they new it was too fast and would takeaway from sales of the s6.

The current version is pretty stable, and I expect the next version to also be stable. That's far more important than getting it right away. The 5% statistic is not meaningless, it reflects the great trouble companies are having with making the OS stable for their specific devices. It's a huge mess.

  • A7 with snapdragon cpu is indeed midrange device (though its 64bit) But exynos version of A7 have same cpu + gpu as galaxy alpha so exynos version is not mid range device BUT i prefer Alpha because of its perfect size+design and battery is removeable

I face problem of over heating before so I downgraded to. 4.4.4 by stock rom from sammobile but after continue notification on status bar regarding update not good so again updated to lolipop it's too good now no issues except auto time update on lock screen.I strongly recommend to go for 5.0.1 I m from India

  • This predates the GS6. Light weight, small size with very good specs. Samsung put a quality build on their handsome little phone, but the battery will barely last the day with battery saver on. I would like to see them redo this a bit bigger, to hold a 2700 mil battery. I far prefer a removable battery to the closed back. Camera is excellent, but the screen is lower resolution. Nice option for someone who carries a smartphone just for the security (older parent) and isn't into iPhone. Keeping mine as a spare, very pocket worthy.

  • I'm experiencing exactly the same issues. Had the phone just over a year now. It had been working beautifully up until the last month or so, in which it is now plagued with exactly the same issues you have specified. Considering that I use my phone for work purposes, this is a significant issue.

  • I got the Alpha last November, it's been great up until a few months ago where, if my data was on if my phone reached 40% battery life then the phone would just automatically shut off. however if you turn off your data prior to getting to 40% it'll last until about 15% and then shut off on its own. This would happen regardless if i had a power saver on or not. And now, the phone refuses to charge at all..

  • i love the phone, but i would share some bad comments of this phone after 1 year usage. - battery comes very low capacity ( i need to charge it twice daily) - Signal very weak ( sometimes no signal at all while other phone is better) - at the moment my Alpha have sent to servece center for repair and it is been 3 weeks in service center up to now. The problem is finger scan doesnt responce anymore, usb host stop working, speaker sometimes silent (make me missed alot call ) to sum up, this phone was very good for the first year, but letter on the problem comes up, luckily it comes with 2 years warranty. however, this is a beautiful phone and easy hold in hand as it comes with very good size.

  • That's normal especially if your on AT&T. I have the phone for 6 months and AT&T has pushed through about 2 or 3 updates already. Go to settings, General, About Device, Software Updates and then Continue Updates. I hope this helps ! Enjoy the phone, I do!

  • Been using alpha for more than a year now. I don't like it, heats up too fast, drains the battery too fast, lags most of the time, it freezes, shuts down on its own, and the screen turns rainbow then gets mirrored or become negative in color. The only solution to return it back to normal is to remove the battery for a few second and turn it back on; but after a few minutes of using it again, the same problem occurs. Part of the screen doesn't respond to touch very well. I turned it too tech support but their tech support is useless.

(since some settings of developer options can mess up your phone little,samsung hid the option as default...) just go to developer option and limit background process to 2 or 4 and you should delete unnecessary apps and install greenify or task killer apps.. ...im having 3-4hours screen times by straight usage

  • my alpha never hang or heated ......there are some useful tips for you... 1 go to developer option and limit background process(max 2 is good) 2 delete cache in "storage" in settings 3 you might have too many apps in background... check what kind of apps are consuming ram usage and disable or delete the apps if you dont really need them(apps/online games like coc and facebook app are notorious battery eater) 4 download task killers or greenify apps to stop unesessary apps my ram is always more than 800-900mb free and never heated or hanged..hope this help..

  • delete cache in recovery mode, check your ram usage and see what apps on background... delete rarely used apps and go to developer option to reduce background processes(2 is good).... my alpha never hanged before and after rooted btw...i recommend you to upgrade lollipop if youre still on kitkat btw

  • I've installed lollipop 5.0.2 version from 11 september 2015 yesterday manualy with odin 3.10.7 following the instruction from sammobile.com. 15 min and it was finished...i can tell you that everithing works great and that i got 5.20 hours of screen time frkm 100% to 1%. For me a better experience because on KitKat 4.4.4 i was getting about 4 hours...( wifi on, facebook, playing poker, calls, some photos and 2-3videos, takking almost every 15 minutes at work...don't know about you guys but for me everything works just flawless.

It's great...working very smooth, ram usage is better in my case...1.15 in use...don't know if battery improved a little bit but i'll come back with some updates in 1-2 days. the experience is great !!! at least for me it's flawless !

  • ram usage of my Alpha is always less than 1gb or bit more than 1gb there is my methods: 1check your ram usage and delete what consume your ram ao much, 2 go to developer option and set "limit back ground process" to "at most 2 process" or less than that(this will significantly reduce ram usage than "standard usage" 3 download greenify or task killer apps too stop unnecessary apps hope this helps

  • Even if you have a higher RAM device, RAM will tends to be nearly full to be able open mostly used apps faster. Unless you manually kill the apps every time (this will cause system to be misbehave and slow opening apps), if not the RAM will be always nearly full to provide better user experience. You can see that in application manager there are 2 sections, running services and cache processes. Cache processes is use in keeping the apps to load faster next time while running services is to keep services and syncing active. Priority is given first to running services which never stops running in RAM. If RAM needed for a newly open apps, apps that use the least in cache processes will be killed. Yes, the more RAM needed if you install more applications that provide services (like Google services, widgets, mail or social networking apps). For that being said, this is why old Android devices that has less RAM and also less internal storage (apps can't be installed in SD card) to prevent too much apps overloading the RAM.

  • "Small Battery". It's battery is replace-able, so it's actually one of the biggest in the market (you can buy a spare, you can buy the official 2500 mah one, etc)/ "Small Resolution". The phone is small so 720p is enough, it's the same as having 1080p at 5.7 inches. A lot of phone have 1080p , nobody calls their resolution "small". So no small battery, no small resolution, its only problem is the small RAM. Android is Ram hungry, but touchwiz is even hungrier than that, so 3GB should have been the minimum...

  • I am a 2 Galaxy Alpha”s owner. The two phones are very good, working fine, and the battery is acceptable (in the evening remain about 50-60%), using the two phones about 2-3 hrs on calling and about 1-2 hrs on the internet. Galaxy Alpha is a very good smartphone (including the taken pictures). Buy it (an original one of course) and you will never regret. You will love it.

  • yes, just like other recent samsung smart phones, it has same functions like motion and gesture and air ...only drawback is battery life: 3-4 hours screen on times + 10-16 hours standby times, you can use more than a day if youre not heavy user) but thats enough for most people and i never had performance problems even after i updated my alpha to lollipop, it would do good job as secondary phone

  • I hate the idiotic white background instead of black background. In Android 6, it would be possible to select the background color, so finally we're not stuck with the stupid Android 5 design. End of this year or beginning of next year, we get the update. It should also have a lot better battery usage when idle.

  • I've updated Alpha to Lollipop 2 days ago, did a factory reset and everything is working great with no lag just like before. Screen on time increased to about 30 minutes more. The only thing bad is that the overall look was better before (but that's just my opinion). No regrets here. Alpha is still the best phone I've used. I've got the 850F.

  • My galaxy alpha got the OTA lollipop update yesterday it's now running Android 5.0.2 Was unsure about upgrading after reading bad things. However my phone ran well on kitkat and it's even better on lollipop. It's very slick and snappy and the lock screen notifications are great. No problems whatsoever. There's a few cosmetic changes. Music player has gone from black to white. Recent apps is nice. Well done Samsung!

  • I actually dont have a problem regarding the battery life, in fact I'm quiet impressed considering that its a very small battery. It lasts more than a day of use. I play GT Racing 2 during office breaks and an occasional facebook check with also a hint of texting with some friends and family when I get home from work (at the end of the day I still have 30-40% of juice left). I am definitely satisfied with the phone, great performance, though I suffer from lags sometimes and some apps take a bit too long to open but still generally fast. Its a looker too! I've had friends of mine compliment the phone regarding how great it looks, I have the white one though, I could have been happier if I had the black one.

  • If you are a power user I suggest you go for Note 3 as it has a bigger screen and battery + S Pen is productive. S5 is good too comparing to Note 3 and Alpha , S5 is water resistant , has 16MP camera and a bigger battery than Alpha. If you care about looks and pocketablity then go for Alpha, but remember, You need to charge your phone daily due to the small battery.

  • The 2500mah battery pack (which includes a thicker back cover) can't be found ANYWHERE anymore, there are only many expired auction pages. It was never widely available and Samsung stopped manufacturing them long ago (according to stores). Anyway, the 1860mah battery is perfectly fine as already demonstrated in online reviews including a comparison review here on gsmarena where the Galaxy Alpha clearly won over HTC One mini 2. The talk time is very good, and the power usage on idle is the best I've ever seen on a smartphone. With H+ constantly on, the phone easily lasts over 2 days with moderate usage, and it has lasted me about 4 days when I used it very little. In short, phones are not created equal, and a "beefier" phone with a "beefier" battery could use MUCH more of that battery simply because it uses much less efficient chips, as well as firmware. And people don't realize that Samsung's batteries are the best, and that the number that comes before "mah" often doesn't mean very much, because one manufacturer's ~1900mah battery could equal another manufacturer's ~1500mah battery in the real world as opposed to on paper, especially after a couple of years, when the differences in manufacturing quality become more and more emphasized.

  • Jeez. How many times have people said there's a Samsung 2500mah battery available for the Alpha? This makes the phone near impossible to run down even with heavy usage, given it's only got an HD panel to worry about. The S6 has appalling battery life according to my friend (mostly due to the QHD screen). So ditch the standard 1860mah battery it came with and get the extended one off ebay etc. Perfect phone, resolution and speed of use! Plus, you can STILL keep the old one as spare..

  • Oh, really? So a 4.7 inch screen with 720x1280 resolution is so bad, huh? No, it isn't, 312 PPI is NOT bad, it's good. The screen has amazing quality and looks better than ANYthing else available. It even almost totally nails SRGB colors. That's extremely unusual - see the notebookcheck review. The small battery is the one thing that makes this phone unsuitable for "heavy" users, however for "normal" users it's perfectly fine since it lasts a very long time on idle. Mobile data on H+ hardly uses any power on idle and the phone easily lasts days. "Theoretical" LTE bandwidth (networks hardly ever reach it) is pointless. I easily get about 50Mbps download and 20Mbps upload on HSPA+ - who the hell needs more than that on a freaking phone? Galaxy Alpha has great build quality, is proven to be extremely durable, and it looks and feels great. It's clearly a premium build, unlike any mid-range phone's, and better than most high-end phones'. It has very high overall performance. It has very high graphics performance, thanks to the powerful processor and the sane/correct choice of screen resolution. It has very decent camera performance similar to S5 except in very bright light where the extra resolution of S5 wins slightly, but Alpha handles light sources in low light conditions much better than S5 (no strange blue halos). It has the highest sound quality of headphones output of ANY phone, including S6, iPhone 6S, HTC One M8 and M9. None of them compare to Galaxy Alpha. Galaxy S6 has the same perfect frequency response, but not enough power, so Galaxy Alpha clearly wins. Compare any of the top end phones to it and hear for yourself. No other phone comes anywhere near Galaxy Alpha's combination of build quality, performance, screen and headphone output quality, for the price. Expensive? Sure it is, but not compared to OTHER smartphones. You want to mention cheaper phones as being better? Then don't even bother unless you take into account all the factors. You can bring an example of a phone with a uselessly high resolution, but it won't have the same screen QUALITY, and most probably nowhere near similar quality in other areas (processor, or audio quality, or build quality, or other). So anyone who feels like bringing examples of "better deals" - save yourself the trouble, because obviously nothing comes near this one for the price.

  • I accidently dropped my Alpha 2 days back from 7 feet height. when it slipped from my pocket for one moment i thought that my Alpha is gone; i closed my eyes for that moment and crossed my fingers and guys you won't believe that my device was still on and did not have even a single scratch anywhere and best part is that it was still working properly. That day i realised Alpha is a sturdy device as no device would have survived a blow from 7 feet height direct to the floor. It's been an year since i am having this beautiful device and i still love this device over many recent devices from samsung.

It's been an year since i own Alpha as my primary device and i can say that you will get the same performance as samsung latest devices offering i.e S6, Edge, Note 5 because Alpha is more optimize with kitkat and have better RAM management resulting overall flawless performance & Multitasking.

  • Galaxy alpha is by far the ALPHA dog of the 'A' series,so go for it without hesitation, true it might have some minor bugs but lets face it no smartphone perfect..so have fun :).The 'A' series and note series are entire different ships in the same ocean..So make your choice based on priorities.

  • Beware bait + switch. Can't speak for outside the US, but in US many e-tailers are advertising G850M (unlocked octa-core) but they ship you the G850A quad core LOCKED to ATT. Target.com and electronicsforce.com both sent me the A model. As soon as I returned to target, they took all Alpha models off their website. I have reports from 2 others that same thing happened to them (BestBuy.com and 1 other). The other strange thing is, the prices are all over the map. From under $200 to $600+ USD. I really like the specs on this phone. Too bad I can't actually find one.

  • It's been 10 months since i am using ALPHA & I didn't encounter any issues with the same. It's just flawless in each & every area; call quality is also nice. Did you upgrade to lollipop ? if yes then it could be coz of bugs in lollipop 5.0.1. However i am still using Kitkat which is flawless.

  • I've bought Alpha 2 weeks ago and I just love the phone. It's fast with no lags in all the games I've played so far (Dungeon hunter 4, Asphalt 8 ...) Photos are great, call quality is good and the music quality with headphones is just great. I don't have a problem with charging my phone every day and I usually get around 24h with 3-3.5h screen on time. Really no regrets so far!!

  • screen time: max 5-6 hours for web browsing, max 3-4 hours for gaming(emulator games drains less batteries than HD mobile games) i usually have over 10-16 hours standby times + 3-4 screen times and still around 20% or less

  • Bought one at Jumbo electronics Mall of the Emirates UAE 2 weeks ago - but am trying to work out which chipset it has. Very happy with the Alpha because it was a reluctant replacement for the good old Galaxy 2. Caution - paid top dollar which is hard to justify when the A3 n A5 are sitting next to it at half the price, (with smaller RAM, non removable battery, smaller camera etc etc).

  • but i rather recommend s5 than g3 because g3's screen resolution is too big and it weighs gaming performance greatly(benchmark result of g3 is also relatively low for high end device) WHILE s5 has Same cpu chipset, lower screen resolution(snapdrogon 801 lose performance(mostly gaming) in screen resoution higher than Full HD, g3 have Quad HD) and it's waterproof

  • Hii Rajat, This isn't possible that your device is lagging bcoz of lollipop update notification. Cause of lagging might be due to other sources like the Buggy Apps that you may have recently installed etc. As i too have the Lollipop update notification but i didn't upgrade yet as Kitkat is just flawless. if you don't want to upgrade do one thing Go to Settings > About Device > Software update & untick Auto Update & wi-fi Only options.   • Upgrade to Lollipop and also downloaded 'Battery Doctor' app today, (from Cheetah mobile [?] and it's free in Google play store) one of these actions appears to have solved all my battery problems.. yesterday a full charge was lasting about 10 hours, today it's more like 20. I activated BD two or three times to 'optimise' things and it closes of all the idle apps and everything runs smooth. Very happy now. Good luck.

  • this phone is SO FU*KIN AWESOME before i bought it i was concined about battery life because i read a lot of bad comments but it is deffinitely longer than on galaxy s3 which i used for year and a half. overall, this is the best phone compared to prices given out there. if you'rein doubt whether you should buy it or not, deffinitely go for it!!

  • I am using Galaxy Alpha from more than 8 Months and using Lollypop from 15 days. And i would say overall Update is good and you should update to the lollypop. Performance is still same as litkat , apps launch quickly. Animations are smoother now , Performance is head to head with my friend's galaxy S6. Battery life is still same as kitkat. White ui of lollypop is better for sunlight visibility Camera is still same All features from kitkat is still there on lollypop . Nothing removed Fingerprint scanner unlocks phone quicker than Kitkat , and i always use That scanner. Bugs are 1 - after heavy multitasking , Minimized app Closes due to poor ram management . 2 - after connecting headphones , i am listening music , and still that (Recommanded apps ) notification coming after several minutes . May be its due to that Default app (Recommanded apps) is not optimized for lollypop. 3 - Default bowser is worse on lollypop , In websites ,it takes my touch input after half of second . It makes me to use google crome Any one is having this same bug
