Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G T699 - User Reviews

  • 4G but no LTE......

  • I had the motorola xt894 before i got the relay 4g and sorry, the peformance of the samsung relay 4g is much better!

  • Ahh the beloved slider/keyboard phone, how long I have searched for one that didn't suck entirely, and this one certainly does the job. Among the limited few smart/slider phones out there, I'd say this one is the top of the pick. To begin I'd like to point out that it's almost October 2016 and I literally bought the phone a week ago, brand new and factory sealed, from the US (I'm in Canada) and with the shipping it only cost me around 130$. For others in Canada you should be aware that T-Mobile doesn't actually have a Canadian branch so we can't use them as a carrier. The device will only work with a GSM network, not CDMA, meaning our choices are somewhat limited. Rogers & Fido are the 2 definite options, and Sprint has some regions with GSM as well. On to the phone itself; the Samsung/T-Mobile preloaded apps and whatnot are ABSOLUTE garbage all around. When I got the device I didn't immediately go into the process of rooting and flashing a custom ROM, I wanted to see what it did out of the box instead. What it did was insult me. With a paid battery saver App I've been using a long time on my tablet, the phone fully charged and on sleep mode gave me less than 20hrs battery expectancy. So the onboard nonsense makes this phone very unimpressive.... 2 days later I got annoyed, root & CM rom, battery life is now more than doubled and the entire phone runs a ton smoother. I use a paid version of CameraZoom, so I can't speak to the basic camera function, but pictures are quite nice and the flash is good and bright. The touch-screen is responsive without being over-sensitive, and the display itself is impressive considering the resolution. The keyboard is decent, although the buttons feel very undersized compared to the physical dimensions of the keyboard itself. All in all, this is an excellent device for anyone looking for a smart/slider, so long as you root & ROM out of the box. Far as I'm concerned, I now have the keyboard I love, the smartphone I wanted, and a price my wallet can smile about.

  • I will be receiving this device in a few days(free)..I advise anyone that ''still'' has this phone,to go on XDA forums and upgrade this device (Kitkat) or all the way up to Lollipop 5.0.2....

  • motorola xt894 from ebay is cheap and amazing

  • Was thinking of dumping this phone for a new one because it was having some issues. However, that would've been a foolish mistake since I haven't found another phone that I like better. So I took a chance ... With CM12 aka Lollipop 5.0.2, this phone is extremely quick transitioning between apps. Everything works to date with the custom ROM except the GPS. I don't use GPS anyway, so for me, a great phone just got better!

  • Thank you for answer me. Well i know there's a few versions out there. 1) I found Consumer Cellular, sell the Relay 4G, have a lot in stock; but they force me to have a plan with them at least 30 days, and that's something i don't want to do, because if i order this phone i'll have this in my hands in a week or two. Besides that ConsumerCellular, can give you an unlock code after the 30 days. So that's what stop me from buying from them, i was going to.. 2)Cell2Get.com , has another ones in stock, i don't know if you guys knows that webpage, it's secure? They sell new in box sealed devices? or they refurbished? I really need to buy a Qwerty keyboard with the same specs or better to be able to work in SouthAmerica. We have all the GSM 2G/3G 850/1900mhz and 4G LTE 1900mhz. Please someone knows where i can get a couple of Relays new..? Most of you will say Ebay, but Ebay doesn't have much anymore, and besides they have been used a lot, so.. Thank you.

  • Ten, First of all, probably you can not find a brand new Relay, because it was produced for only Tmobile and only in USA in limited numbers. The phone released on 2012, which means it is almost impossible to find a new one. It is a GSM smartphone you can use it in South America, in Europe, wherever you want. Second, there is not any difference between Relay and Relay 4G. Same phone different names. Third, if you buy an used one you can unlock it by yourself. Just go to xda, you will find your answer there. But you have to be on Android 4.0. (I know lot of work but it does worth.) Thansk!

  • Hi guys. I have a few questions about this phone. a)Where can i buy this new? I know it's almost impossible. But it doesn't matter if it's in US or Europe, or Maybe Asia, but i need the GSM version, because i'm planning to use this in SouthAmerica(Movistar/Claro). b) What's the difference between Samsung Galaxy S Relay vs Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G. I found online people mention both of them. What is the GSM version? They're the same? both are unlockable? c) Can i unlocked myself? Where i can find the code? Thank you!

  • good

  • I had same problem. App "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" from "core technology" worked for me.

  • You can't use the hotspot using stock firmware as it's set to disable. you need to use third party software or root your phone and use custom firmware like CyanogenMod if you want to get that working

  • The Samsung galaxy relay will not let me end calls or even turn on the screen when its making a call. How can i fix this?

  • Please I just got this phone. Pls I am having issues with the hotspot. It does not turn on so I can not use it. Please how do resolve it

  • agreed! great phone just needs a little tender loving fist in it's rom

  • Root and remove boat. Get custom rom from xda and rejoice as you will have a phone as fast as newer phones at a quarter of the price. And this is the last of the qwertys.

  • i switched to this phone from a blackberry torch and immediately noticed how painfully slow the phone is. i bought it for the qwerty keyboard but now use the swype feature and hardly ever use the qwerty. the phone is just so painfully slow! switching between apps is a study in patience. i'm never enthusiastic about doing a quick search for a contact, etc... it all takes way too long. i'm sure not all samsungs or android phones are like this - makes me wonder.

  • Has anyone had problems with screen going blank? I need to get the screen on so i can retrieve text messages from its memory. Ive tried plugging it in to a desk top and everything comes out except the text messages. Does anyone know where i can get it fixed without resetting its memory so i dont lose the text messages i need as evidence In court. Please anyone??

  • Sold as a "T-Mobile" Phone (in the U.S.A.)I have one, and I am very fond of its qwerty key board and extrodinary capabilities...I highly recommend this device.

  • Does any one know what band this phone is? Is it single, dual, tri or quad band? I wan to buy this to you in the uk.

  • It's a nice phone, not obsolete what-so-ever. Put liquidsmooth on it and it becomes even nicer.

  • I dont know why everyone else complains so much about a phone. I guess reviews are the place you get to vent about negative stuff about your phone Ive had my Galaxy Relay for more than a year and its been a really good buddy of mine. I wouldn't mind upgrading but as for right now, this phone is apt for my daily life :)

  • I have this handset and it is last of it's kind. I bought one from Ebay and is a little beat-up. I believe it is a refurbished handset. The charging port does not work so I bought a external battery charger, and a couple spare batteries for it. I love to use the keyboard to type text on it. It is great for someone who love to use physical keyboards on phones. I do not think any companies are making phones like this anymore. I had a G2 made by HTC and was great but had bad battery life. With the Jellybean update on this handset it gets great battery life on it.

  • It works good but after using for a few weeks I realized the the new camera app that comes with 4.3.1 crashes so many times that i felt like I should just go back to the normal samsung stock buildd. So I put back the original software 4.1.2 no issues smooth as butter

  • Bought on June 2014 (on the bay, US seller), good phone (much better than my previous Xperia Pro, both for speed and for display), but after only one month of use, always kept with extreme care, it already has some cracks on the plastic around the keyboard... unbelievable!!! Since the same happened to my wife, who has a Galaxy Mini 2, I'm afraid it is a problem due to the poor quality of Samsung plastics... (not only for entry level phones, since the SGH T699 cannot be defined in such way)

  • How can I get 4.3.1 cyanogenmod for my t699?

  • Nice phone mine came with jellybean brand new and unlocked in original box. I used for a year then decided to upgrade the android os from 4.1 Jellybean to 4.3.1 cyanogenmod. Its like new phone now way better features and smoother than any phone I ever had. This phones battery last alllllll day no matter how much I use it. Calls are clear. keys feel good on keyboard. respect

  • The Sandisk Ultra microSD XC UHS-1 64gb Class 10 is compatible with this device in format exFAT without problems

  • I tried it out and it is working fine with UMTS in germany (provider is vodafone). Thx for help.

  • Without problem bro! Look at specs...it's full compatible with EU frequencies even with Deutschland! :D

  • Can someone say from experience if this phone would be working on 3G in germany (provider Vodafone)?

  • I have being looking for a good Qwerty Slider Smartphone with a 5 row key keyboard for a while. I currently use a Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and I really was waiting to see if a smartphone with a good 5 row keyboard would come out with a 2GB ram and quad-core processor. This does not seem like its going to happen either in the US or in Europe where I'm based. I would probably have got a Motorola Photon 4G for its excellent keyboard but its a major risk to try and remove to build in sim card and solder on a sim card reader to access a sim for a european network. I bought Samsung T699 unlocked from Open Group Wireless for 150Euros + 65 Euro Tax, Customs duty and Transport using freight forwarder Borderlinx who streamlined any problems exporting to Rep. of Ireland. The package arrived 2 days early and straight out of the box, I put in my O2 sim card and its worked seamlessly since, the only limiting factor is the patchy coverage outside of the cities by O2 network, but in the cities it is very fast web browsing and even picked up on the new trailing of 4G by O2 in cork. The keyboard is very good for fast typing and the dedicated number row and multiple secondary functions on each key using the function key is a great feature. Outside of being slightly heavier that the Sansung S3, this phone can match the S3 in almost all departments - the screen resolution is slightly less than the S3 but really is not obvious. The 5mp Camera is very good and the focus is much better than the 8mp camera on the Sony Xperia Pro. Call quality is fine receiving and speaking and playing Music through the speakers has excellent clarity. Even with 3.75Gb of the phone's memory taken up with preloaded software does not seem to be an issue and it runs Android 4.1.2 Jellybean out of the box. I have checked the Blogs on upgrading Android but it seems to be a safer bet to stick with Jellybean to keep the full functionality of the slide out keyboard. overall this is Excellent value Qwerty Slider Smartphone for any GSM network worldwide

  • Hi, imported this phone to Europe. Unlocked it quite easily with some codes (tutorial on Youtube), needed to do that twice for some reason. Phone works great on Vodafone moved to KPN within a month (some local Dutch mobile network)... No problems at all. Previous phone was a Sony Xperia Pro by the way. Keyboard "feel" is a litttllee bit less in my opinion.. But apart from that, much better phone.

  • Yeah no

  • Hello everybody! Small question, Could it be used in any country like GCC? Or is it locked exclusively for T-Mobile only ? And if it was locked, could it be unlocked easily? Thank u all

  • Upgraded OTA to 4.1.2 Jellybean. Cyanogenmod 10.2 stable is also available.

  • Is this phone upgradable to Android 4.1 jellybean?

  • Yes, it's worth the upgrade because this phone runs ICS natively.

  • Hi Saurabh, I'm currently using the Captivate Glide and I'm very keen on upgrading myself to the galaxy relay. How's the phone's performance?? Is it worth the buy or not?? Are you facing any issues?? A reply would be very much appreciated.. :)

  • I need these Specs or strong Specs in QWERTY bcuz BlackBerry is no more interted.

  • The glide is slower and older with less memory. But sure... "way better"

  • Have you guys seen the galaxy glide? Way better.

  • Fantastic phone....Getting good speed over internet here in Delhi...But little slow while gaming even it has a dual core 1.5gHZ processor...!!!

  • One of the fastest I checked on 3G wifi with Quadrant Standard Result are; SG S3 (SC-03E Japan) OS 4.1.1 Score 6581; SG T699 (T-Mobile) OS 4.1.2 Score 5810; SG S3 mini (Int'l version) OS 4.1.2 Score 2610; Surprisingly T699 results excellent. Hope to get update OS 4.2.2 from Samsung.

  • Got it in 'Murika, unlocked and moved it to Canada. It works perfectly! Getting full 4G speeds on two of the four major carriers up here. The other two are CDMA, so it doesn't work on their network. Great phone, fast too! Rooted with CM 10.1. It is so nice to have a keyboard.

  • So i looked into this, turns out you can't get it in the England. USA only by the looks of things. dont think i will buy from USA to unlock just incase it dosent work. Anyone been able to get it from any other country yet?

  • cell2get.com $365.00

  • Yes, it has Gorilla Glass 2, same as Galaxy S3.

  • You can use this phone anywhere. It has every major 2G/3G/4G, this is a global phone. Just locked to T-mobile - which can easily be unlocked remotely for a fee or by yourself. Also, with the dual core 1.5 ghz S4 chipset - wifi signal is great and mobile data signal is great.

  • Please update the specifications on this phone: -Upgradeable to Jellybean 4.1.2 -Bluetooth 4.0 -No Adobe Flash (Jellybean from Samsung Update)

  • Firstly this website needs to get their facts straight. Look up the specs on this phone (i.e. Relay is Blutooth 4.0, it's JB phone, and accordingly does not have Adobe Flash) For all the people with complaints about TMobile's data plans, this is supposed to be a review of the phone not your carrier. I buy unlocked phones and use prepaid GSM - here's my review. The relay is hands down the best QWERTY phone with a removable SIM. And it is hands down the best keyboard for speed and accuracy of any phone. In the world of getting the most out of your phone - great touchscreen, great keyboard, powerful processor for doing whatever task, great 5MP camera - this is the phone to get My opinion of the Relay - smooth running on Samsung's Jellybean update last month (runs 2 days with no charge, no problems), focuses and takes quick, sharp 5MP pix. Touchscreen is great - Samsung Touchwiz launcher trumps the Motorola UI (IMO). Compared to Sony Xperia Pro, there is no comparison, everything on this phone is better - camera, WIFI strength, 3G/4g strength, battery life. The camera on the Xperia Pro basically has no ability to focus at any setting - so you get 8MP of blur - but it was released 4 years ago cell phones have come a long way since then. Compared to Droid 4 - I would say the battery lives are equal depending on what you do. Droid had rotation issues and a blueish tint - both annoying. Droid 4 camera when set at 5MP is slightly lower in quality, good but not as good as the Relay. The Droid 4 at 8MP, autofocus is a mess, useless.. there's no excuse for that. Relay has a superior, brighter screen as compared to bluey screen on the Droid 4. Relay has clearer and louder speakers. The Motorola keyboard was slightly more prone to errors (for me) because the little buttons directly next to each other, and in general, the Relay keyboard layout and buttons are just better. The Droid 4 is still a solid phone. Only thing better about Droid 4 has an HDMI out built it. You can get the same with Samsung Galaxy S connectors. In regards, to just QWERTY phones, I would take on even greatest master of touchwiz in regards to speed and accuracy of my ability to type. In my opinion the keyboard button spacing of the Relay makes typing flawless on the Relay. So even if the Photon Q were available to me, I wouldn't use it - maybe just my personal preference because of Samsung's keyboard. I don't see anything from development rumors about Samsung, HTC, Hauwei, even Blackberry coming out with a new QWERTY slider.. Sony has abandoned the QWERTY, I've read Motorola's next flagship won't have a QWERTY either. I saw a rumor of a Nokia Windows 8 in development of a QWERTY slider in the distant future, if true, I'm sure it will have a huge price tag sure. I don't blame the companies for not developing newer QWERTY sliders - people don't buy them, it baffles me why consumers don't buying slide out QWERTY phones in general, you get the best of both worlds. Anyway, the Relay is best in class for for people that want a great all round phone (usability, camera, screen, performance, 4G) and in my opinion the best keyboard of any phone in the market.

  • Does this phone hav gorilla glass or any other screen protection? should i use scratch guard with this phone?

  • xda unlocking procedure:

  • it's for T-Mobile U can't find it I wanna one for my self as well :/

  • which store in saudi arabia wa can buy Galaxy S Relay 4g

  • The fastest, and most stable Android I have owned OOTB. I didn't even root this bad boy until I had it a few months, and still solid. I have had Droid x2, Droid2 x2, (Intercept, and Optimus Slider) Sidekick4g x2. The only things I don't like about it is that you have to get into settings to turn off WiFi-calling, and when you hit the home button it drags it's feet to get home most of the time, but that is only like a 2 second delay... (This is due to built-in screen-shots, I think [power and home takes screenshots].)

  • How do u get an unlock code if you're ordering from outside the U.S?

  • how can we download CyanogenMod 10.1 for samsung galaxy s relay 4g??

  • CyanogenMod 10.1 is available for this phone. There are a few minor bugs such as a delay with the keyboard lighting when opened and a few others. Nice of those devs to provide a taste of Jelly Bean to the users of this phone. I'm still leaning toward the Nexus 4, though.

  • nop

  • That is so true I'm going to get this phobe

  • is it a dual sim phone??

  • What a refief that CM 9 has been released for it. I was afraid that I would have to sit down and cook the custom roms on my own using the xda kitchen! LOL! The arrow pad is a great addition. I'll miss the jump key but I'm willing to trade that for the arrow buttons. I have a few games that I'm dying to try out. Thanks for your input and advice! :-)

  • Xda has a CM9 that lots of people like, also I'm almost happy to report that it seems I have worked out my differences with t-mobile, the plan is actly cheaper and I will know for sure on 28th when it kicks in. Look up my posts on xda - I posted a comparisson picture where this the only qwerty phone (out of 7) with front facing camera, fully loaded, that would work with any gsm carrier in the world (yes it does need sim unlock code from t-mobile, but that's easy). The only thing this phone doenst have is fm radio, but even my other phones with FM - I never used that function before, because u still have to plug smnthg in to use as an antenna... I just use pandora or slacker or spotify or whatever instead, is much better than fm... oh, yeah I the qwerty has arrow keys instead of track pads, and those arrow keys are awesome cuz u can use them as a D-pad when u play games, awesome! I never liked track pads at all, stocked about the "d-pad"!

  • Yes, It's possible. I imported one and unlocked it. Works like a Charm.

  • Why not unlocking the US device to use it in Europe? Or that will not work?

  • This phone specs are quite similar as Samsung Galaxy S Blaze. Only Keyboard is major hardware difference.

  • I can't wait until I get my discount. I may wind up just getting this and use my Sidekick 4G as a backup. Hopefully, xda will come through and give the SK4G CyanogenMod soon. Until the time arrives, this phone is looking good for me.

  • That is the wonders of capitalism. Don't you just love it?

  • For a medium priced phone you will get your moneys worth. The only failing I see is the resolution on the pre-installed app. I downloaded a movie player and it seemed to nullify that issue. The keyboard is fantastic, the memory and processor are outstanding. The camera is a bit lacking but anyone that complains about a 5mb camera is either a photographer or being nit picky for no reason. I took a picture on this phone along with my htc 4g slide which has a bigger camera and higher resolution and I didn't see a difference. If you want a keyboard phone, this is the best there is. If you want a flashy phone that only does alot if you pay for the data plan, get an iphone.

  • beware of t-mobile scam rip-off! the phone was working with blazing fast 4g speeds on my old t-mobile plan, but about 18 hours into it, t-mobile caught on that I have a 4g phone on a 3g plan and stop my data service altogether saying: "Your plan doesn't support this phone" crap. Oh yeah? then how come it did for 18 hours until you caught up with me? Now they want me to upgrade my plan and pay almost 50% more per month than what I used to pay before... The best thing would be to have this phone and have something like simple mobile or any pre-paid carrier, not blood suckers like t-mobile

  • got this phone for free from walmart.com [with 2 year contract renewal with t-mobile], and it looks like it comes already factory unlocked... but i'm not sure, cuz i would have to put another carrier sim inside and the paperwork from walmart specifically says that i will get charged like $200 penalty if i do this within 181 days of "purchase." other than that - the no FM radio thing doesn't bother me, considering that the phone has pretty much everything else that no other phone quite has. now i am just looking for a guide how to root the damn thing cuz I want to start loading the good apps

  • where can i buy this in Saudi Arabia?

  • is it gonna be launched in Malaysia ?

  • is this phone going to launch in malaysia ?

  • Chipset is 8260A while SGS Blaze has 8260

  • I got new brand SGS Blaze @USD250 without contract. I am interested to buy SGS Relay without contract. What is the price?

  • Yes! Please!

  • europe. release it there.

  • photon q is better.. but not available on T-MOBILE so argument invalid

  • excellent mobile

  • I would suggest the Motorola Photon Q, it has better camera and screen resolution.

  • I was expecting this phone to make a big impact here in Puerto Rico. I guess this is Samsung's apology for how it neglected the Sidekick owners.

  • I'm looking for a new smartphone, I love the powerfull Nokia N900 but I want to use Android ICS and more RAM and dual core with qwerty keyboard , Now I find the samsung captivate glide and this Galaxy S Relay, but do you know other better smartphone option to change my N900?

  • Samsung, Seriosuly.. Please do not pretend it is too hard to create a phone with Qwerty Keyboard and has the specifications that equal or better the samsung Galaxy S3. Just because the Trend is touch screen does not mean touch is end all be all. Truth is Samsung does not know it's Australian market, Look at HTC Desire Z phone- If it only had the specifications to equal the Galaxy S3 then it would be the phone that is practically end all and be all- Hence Apple has it's own cult fan crowd and is the devil in disguise but in the end it is the phone that is most powerful with the highest and best specs that made Samsung the leader. Bring ut a keyboard for F sake. I am sure it would not hurt to bring out a top notch quality mobile with Qwerty Keyboard and full features. and until Samsung does, then me and the other millions of peeps won't bother with Samsung phones.

  • New QWERTY phones always seem to be behind the curveball when they come out. Being a big fan of QWERTY phones, I'm always disappointed at how the specs done seem to meet up to other high-end phones on the market. I would be much happier if this phone had a Quad-core processor; at least an 8 MP camera; larger than 8 GB internal storage; and the latest version of Bluetooth. However, I'm still awaiting its arrival to Europe. Hopefully it's sooner than later!

  • This phone is very beautiful

  • any body from india who own my dream phone (relay). Please tell me from where i can have it.

  • Price range pls.

  • is it gonna be launched in Egypt??

  • yea, tell us where or who unlocked your phone. I bought it, works beautifully, but I need to unlock it.

  • when this phone is going to launch in India:::pls let me knw soon...

  • how did you get it unlocked?

  • I have this phone and I got it unlocked. I'm using it in Guam and it works beautifully using 4g. It should work everywhere(other countries). Its like night and day between this phone and the Samsung Captivate Glide. Dual Snapdragon S4 is very fast. I love the Qwerty Keyboard. Awesome phone. Highly Recommended.

  • i hope it will get release in my country..papua new guinea!

  • do have in confrence video calling

  • i need this mobile in Bangalore,Karanataka,INDIA soonly because its a mini computer functions to work lot in a single touch of professional and as well as personal works.

  • I second that: please, oh, please, make this phone available in Europe. There are too few available models with hardware keyboard, and even less with all sets of paranthesis. I won't jump in on smartphones without a proper hardware keyboard.

  • When this phone will come in India? After using Htc Touch Pro 2 Quwerty phone. Now i would like see how Samsung phone will work.

  • Yeah, totally agree on the FM. I don't know why they omit it. Like the keyboard takes too much space. So dumb.

  • I hope this is real!! I would love to have a Samsung galaxy s3 with hardware keyboard!! But i hope it won't be to different from the Galaxy S3's specifications

  • U.k never get good phones with keyboard why not we want them too.

  • Please bring the phone to the Bahamas, Please i need this phone.

  • when this mobile release at K,S,A. ,hoping will come early

  • Please, oh, please, make this phone available in Europe.

  • Any idea why these qwerty phones aren't released in the UK. I want it NOOOOW ! Have been using SE xperia mini pro for 9months and i wouldn't buy smartphone without hardware keyboard. Please Samsung do something in the UK.

  • I have a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide, aka HTC Doubleshot. I was hoping that the Gal S Relay 4G would be more of an upgrade but the only significant benefit I can see would be that the CPU is changed from an MSM8260 (scorpion) to MSM8260A (krait). If I didn't have the MT4GS and had to choose, I'd definitely get the GSR4G because it's better, but I don't see the point of upgrading.

  • When it will be available in Argentina?

  • will my name is london i really want this phone bad,can i get the phone ,lets say about $50

  • Wow. Thanks for your answer that does not answer anything. I checked Wikipedia and Samsung website and it looks good. But I need to be 100% sure. Maybe spare your cool "answers" next time.

  • when it will be available in the philippines?

  • very nice smart phone i like it

  • I am also waiting for it here in Finland, where are you?

  • Gr8 phone actually , 350 ++ ppi is greater than retina display on I-Phone 4S .but with 5 MP camera only? it's too low for a high class phone ! and the battery should be 2000 mAh ++ .

  • Seems like there are few mistakes in the specs- -720p res on a 4 inch device- seems quite impossible as I have never heard of a SUPER AMOLED (not plus or HD)with such res. It must be QVGA -1080p shooter also seems quite unbelievable with 5mp.Could be true though. I hope GSMArena corrects it before ppl start living in fantasies. :)
