It's a stand alone phone/watch, so you don't need your phone nearby in order to play music. Just put it on a SD card plug it into your watch and there you go.

Or make both (Electronic & Removable SIM) versions. Keep the removable band. Make both (Removable & non-removable battery) versions. The one with removable battery gonna sell at the remote part of the world as they (customers) like using the device for years. Add basic features (increasing the storage capacity, etc). Here, the primary interest is to grab market globally for both GSM and GPS network users.

I have had this watch for quite some time using it with a Samsung phone it is fluid really great no problems. After my Samsung phone dine out had nothing but issues pairing it with any other phone because it does not work the way it does with Samsung I'm hoping fingers crossed that they do an update that makes it fully functional the way it did it when it was connected to my Samsung phone

Yes it will connect without a sim card. The sim card is used whenever the watch is outside of the bluetooth range, so the watch can be used independently which also allows for calls to your phone to be forward to the watch. So without a sim card you'll need to be connected to WiFi when not connected to your device to be able to use the watch.

I have the Note 7 and my watch works perfectly with it. I love the way the Gear S looks and the capabilities of it. I only wish Samsung would've stayed with this style of watch. Not a fan of the new round faced Gear S 2...Im going to stay with the Gear S until it dies on me, which doesnt seem like anytime soon 😊. Hope this helps

So i suspect the compatibility between the watch and the phone is only dependant with the OS version and not the device itself. The gears S will then probably work with the Note 7 (at least with Marshmallow at the beginning) but i'm not sure of that. And since the Nougat OS is soon to be released, will it be compatible ? I hope so since i plan to buy a Note 7...

Yea it connects to your phone by bluetooth and also by wifi if both are on same network .when the phone is linked by bluetooth the simpleton in watch can be set to de activate untill pairing is seperated. When connected to phone it takes all the notifications and you can reply to most of them and you can also take and make calls on phone via watch

Great little phone/watch if you are a person that just cant put your phone down. It will save you phone battery and you can practicallu do everything on it. Yeah screen might be small but 300ppi is outstanding on any screen smaller then 4 inch as for the wrist band its not very big but you can purchase different bands if needed, although the band size should have removable links to help aid sizes. No camera is a downside also lack of nfc and lack of everyday apps is a bit gimiky considering the price is about the same as a full cheap android phone. Over all great screen smooth performance and outstanding call quality. Also need to mention texting is a bit annoying...

i have had my GEAR S now for 3 days.and i have used it as standalone and connected to my samsung s5 and i even paired it with my wifes sony xperia sp.. its a good quality design,and it works as it should.. but my only drawback with it .is that i cant have my favourite apps on there to use like whatsapp,wechat,line,viber... the apps are not available.. .the tizan system is ok. but i still prefer android system. i wish they made an android version of the GEAR S as well.im looking at sites to see it there is a port to put android on there. i know xda are looking into it....

Gat you beat!! I bought a Gear S from T Mobile. After 10 days the charging cradle broke. T Mobile did not have a replacement. Called Samsung Support and the issued a return authorization requiring the watch and cradle. The repair depot took my new watch and broken cradle, replacing it with a used (old) watch and new cradle. I now own 5 Galaxy phones and Three Samsung Televisions. They will be the last Samsung products that I purchase.

I bought this watch and a Note edge to go with it 3 months ago. The watch is currently at Samsung repair because it wouldnt charge. It wouldnt charge and I figured out that the contacts werent making a good connection. Couple days later the back of the phone where the cradle snaps and hooks on broke and now the cradle has to be rubberbanded on to charge. Samsung just told me it wasnt covered under warranty even though it is a defect. Spent over 1500 with them and they find any reason to void the warranty. Since it had physical damage regardless of how terrible their design, the warranty is void. The watch barely makes it through the day so you need to charge it about twice a day. The geniuses their thought that plastic snapping into cheap plastic would be durable. Also, when you reply to text it doesnt update the phone. I really love the look of the watch and if the features worked I would be happy. But they want me to pay 242.00 to put a new back on the watch. The Note edge has a green vertical line that wont go away and I'd have to mail it in and wait till they fixed and mailed it back. Samsung is all gimmick. They want to force brand customer loyalty by leveraging your investment in them but do nothing to retain it when their products break under normal use and within 90 days.

I own the Gear S and it amazes about what people or reviews say about the lack of apps. It is nonsense, there are more than enough apps out there and more always being developed. How many functions to you want on a 2" screen. The watch size is not as large a feel as you think, it is the pictures on here that make it look bigger. It fits perfectly around any wrist size and has an exceptional screen and easy to use with your finger. It truly is an amazing piece of gear. The phone works great and you do not have to speak to your wrist when using phone you can have your hands beside your waist etc. If you are using a BT head set then of course it matters not. Battery is well above average considering the screen and pixel density and will last on heavy usage a day and medium to light 2 days, again this depends on things like screen brightness etc. As for it being only on a Samsung device - so what. I do not see anyone who uses or talks about apple watch out there complaining it should be open to all devices. So what is wrong with Samsung doing the same lets not be biased shall we! This watch is yrs ahead of the apple it packs better superior screen has all the apps you can ever need, can be used as a standalone phone watch and has superior battery. Also it is cheaper than the entry basic 38mm ladies size apple watch and does not escalate in price in to the thousands for the same watch! Only apple stupidity does this. Purchase the Gear S you will not be disappointed.

Even your phone is away from home while your Gear S is in the ofiice at work as long as both units are connected to internet via data or WiFi, you will get all the notifications from your phone on Gear S. This may have already been answered... try taking the portable battery pack with you that doubles as the primary charge unit. It is super portable, smaller than a pack of gumm. You may need to take your watch off your wrist but at least it gives you the option of getting a little extra juice till you make it back home.

After using it for quite a while, I don't understand how come so many bad comments about it. It has an excellent display, battery life, and by now a huge amount of Apps that are really helpful. Voice recognition works very well, so as the speaker and microphone. Seems to be, by far, the very best smartwatch in the market. As always happens with Apple devices, some people says the Apple watch will change the market even before testing it. Looking at the Specs of the Apple watch, I don't see anything that the Gear S does not have already, and on the other hand, has far more features... It is an excellent device.

I bought a beautiful and functionally flawless Gear S and after 3 months I'm excited. Beautiful curved display flawlessly fits the hand. Preloaded Appku + decent store for Gear Apps to 100% is sufficient for whatever I thought, and especially everything works perfectly from the first activation. While I do not use to make their own SIM, for up to 10m from my phone calls via the watch works perfectly. Other functions (eg. Bar, navigation, WiFi internet (Opera mini) ...) are independent of the mobile, but after returning home is synchronized automatically with the new data to your phone. This gave me a comfortable calling and receiving calls, especially through contacts with your favorite photos. I have successfully tried and preinstalled navigation HERE. Perfect view the complete e-mail, SMS, MMS, calendar events over whether the weather is granted. Battery life is approximately 2.5 days, and a small dock in the bag for half an hour recharge Gear S and extended mobility for a further 1 day. Dock also lets you charge the watch for about 1.2 hours. Great functionality is, hires fitness stuff. If you sit an hour without moving, watch me funny pick up from the chair and only thanks to my gear S I finally started to perform fitness levels. I am 1000% satisfied. The sense of circular "also smart" watches that are forcibly want to resemble classic, with smart features that are not in any way together = ?. These Gear With the Samsung perfectly succeeded.

The "high" price is now down to $250 with a 2 year contract (Verizon). It has it's own phone number for $5 per month, and uses my Galaxy Note 4's plan and shares data. NO separate data plan required. Reworking my existing Note 4 plan I am paying $3 less per month than I was paying for just the Note 4's plan. Keyboard for messaging, etc, is way too small for my fingers, but there is a speech to text feature. The Gear S comes with a 3100mAh battery, and the snap on cradle has a built in 3500mAh battery which can recharge the Gear S while on the go without need for a cable. I just purchased a 22,400mAh portable battery/charger, so I'll never, ever have to worry about ANY of my recharging needs for ANY of my rechargeables ever again! The only thing that peeves me a bit is the Verizon guy at the store told me it has 16GB of memory. Turns out after some research it has 4GB of memory. No where on the box or in the store did it say it had 4GB. That rather limits the amount of data storage. In fact, on my computer it shows as having 2.44 GB, with 1.8GB used by about 150 songs and 28 pictures.

Have had my Gear S for a week and LOVE IT! I read and watched all the negative reviews on the net and totally don't agree with them. This is a miniature phone on my wrist. I get 4G, all my calls/texts/emails/notifications to my cell phone come up on my Gear S. If I leave my phone at home, they still come to my Gear S. I can also make calls and text from the Gear S itself. I got the SIM card with its own number. Great deal from T-Mobile. This thing is fast, has just enough apps and widgets to take care of what I need. Highly recommended!

The best smart watch in the market in early January 2015, bar none. Nothing comes even close to it. Having read / watched on YT enthusiastic professional reviews and seeing/touching/playing with it at Best Buy I cannot be more excited about the future of this category and what the Koreans are doing right now! The manufacturer is pushing the envelope and is bringing us an exciting technological experience. Gear S will allow me to leave my next expensive phone in a car or at home and have Gear S with me all the time. It is a thing of beauty. Apple will have a big problem if they do not match if for what it is - a standalone device (a smart phone in its own right). Samsung should not lock this device though to the selected Samsung phones only, but make it available to any one, an iPhone, any Android and yes, the new crop of BlackBerry Passport/Classic ones as well. The UI is very good, the gesture based interaction - excellent. There is so much to �love� about this smart-watch-phone... What I did not like: the lack of camera - yes, I want one. An unnecessary step back from their previous offerings. Also, give me the best snapper, while we are at it - at least a 3MP one or even more if you can� There is a place there up front above the screen. Even if I do not use one often, except for Skype or Viber I want the full Dick Tracey experience :-). Also a 4 GB sealed-in memory is not enough. Give me the external slot for at lest 16 GB microSD card (as I have read a competitor already has, so it is possible) or go all the way up to the current limit of 128 GB, if you can. Why not? Pull out all the stops. Give me a better processor - the baddest one you can shoehorn in there. Be different and bold and you will sell tens of millions of copies establishing yourself as an undisputed technological leader in the smart watch arena. Also FB, Viber, Skype are must have apps for me. I hope developers will join the Tizen bandwagon, as Samsung is opening to us the totally new experience and possibilities. I would love to snap this one, as all my cons are not a deal breaker, but I think Samsung can do better, and I do not want to give them a pass yet, so that they stay focused on giving us the best the money can buy. Keep trowing at the wall and I shall stick with your next improved version.

yes. in the Bluetooth setting s in the watch, you pair it to a headset just like you would pair with any other phone. set the headset to discoverable and scan with the watch. my headset is paired with and connected to my s5 and my gear s all the time.

The screen is unmatched...I am a moderate user and the battery is good for me between 2.5 to 3 days easily (I use mostly for notification, checking the news, and answering some SMS). Gps is hard to locate the watch. You need to pair it with certain phone. It cannot pair to note 10.1 2014 edition. You cannot hear from the microphone in low noisy condition. You cannot edit the phone contact list. You cannot reply to email from gear. To receive email or not still the gear need to be connected with the paired telephone..... not totally independent.

I'm a guy so my fingers are too big for the screen, but if you're in a meeting and you need to shoot off a quick text but you don't want to pull out (at least for me) a huge phone(galaxy note 4). I got the Gear S to test. First thing I found out is that it will NOT work with my SM-P905 tablet (international model) so will probably go back to my Gear 2. For testing I went ahead and got the cheapest 'phone' that would work which turned out to be the S3 mini. I love the Gar S but also love my tablet 'phone' & it wins. If Samsung reads this, FIX IT to work with tablet phones and not just the Note 4 which really in;t a usable tablet.

This is a standalone smart watch. It depends which network you purchase it on. You can purchase it outright and get it on its own phone and data plan. I have worked for 2 of the major cellular phone companies and worked directly for Samsung. I was involved with the Samsung Gear S during its development. The issues that people are talking about concerning whether the smart watch is standalone or not is more about the marketing of the carrier. Samsung suggests which Samsung phones and recommended devices it can be paired with as an accessory and it can offer more functionality. If you choose to pair it with one of these phones you don't have to pay the stand alone charge for the separate data plan. Reality check, Keep in mind the carriers are out to make money so that is how they are positioning and marketing it. If you buy one outright it is already set up to function on any of the main cellular carriers and they have already set up data plans for them. If they promoted them to work as standalones they would loose a major opportunity.

I charged the Gear S 2 nights ago so I am almost on day 2, about 37 hours now with moderate use, notifications for Messages and phone forwarding on. Have used the mobile radio on and off but not for extended times. Played with it on and off and am still at 22%. Also have the wake up motion enabled. Id say the battery life is about that of a smart phone. Wish it was a week but its not. Really like the Gear S, dont really need it as I have a smart phone but it a cool tech watch.

I too have had it for a week, the battery life is about like any other phone, 1 to 1.5 days depending on how its used. It will last at least a full day if using bluetooth for the most part like me. If using its sim Radio then probably a lot less. As far as the toughness, its like a dress watch, you dont get rough with it, you try to take care of it. As for stutter etc, I havent noticed any issues. The screen scratches, I put a bad azz screen cover on it just like I did with my phone so not too worried. Its a nice piece of hardware.

I have had my Gear S for a couple of days now and love the thing. My only complaints are the lack of voice to text when messaging and the battery life. The swipe does work well when using the keyboard but cmon it has s voice. If you leave it in network always on mode or make lots of calls/text the battery is chewed in no time ~3-4hrs

It is not quite clear that it has gorilla glass but i am not too sure.... it is however DUST resistant and WATER resistant.....dont get confused for water proof...... water resistant means it can be dropped in still water for no more then 30 minutes and the water has to be less then 3 meters deep.... but if u put the water in running fast water or under running water in the sing or take it below 3 meters it will mess up the watch....

The watch does operate standalone it has both hspa+ and wifi to connect to data/phone services. It also pairs up with any Samsung phone operating on android 4.3 and later. Which means I can be in California my Note can be in Texas and I receive all my messages notifications phone calls just as if the phone was in my hand. The watch can be connected to wireless bluetooth headset for those that feel silly talking to a watch. It has a web browser so it can do all mobile sites (facebook,twitter,amazon, google) the only thing I think its missing is youtube and video player. other than that this is a perfect smart watch, The screen is amazing and it has a fully functional swipe enabled keyboard with great auto correction.

I picked this up from verizon today. It is $5 per month. I carry 2 phones one personal and one work. I was able to take note (Work) as main number and put personal number in watch. When away from note example leave in truck while in store and it receives a call After 3 rings it forwards to watch. Watch is stand alone with personal number. I now can carry one phone :)

Not true.. Just turn off the Bluetooth connection to your phone. You can use it as a stand alone device. That is why they give you a phone number when you activate it. Under settings go to the call menu and switch turn off Bluetooth then it should start working. I tried this as soon as I activated my gear s. It made the call without pairing to my s4. I also noticed that as long as you have a samsung device to do the initial setup, you can actually turn off the call forwarding that phone and set up call forwarding on any other phone to go to your gear s. I have a s4 with work phone but my personal is a LG G3.

I completely agree. I have the Note 4 and just picked up the Gear S and the two work perfect together. There is so much packed into the G. Obviously is doesn't do everything and people are going to have their complaints but to be able to basically leave my phone at home when I run out for a bit or even if I forget it and the G stands in perfectly for that amount of time. Calls, Texts, Emails, Notifications, News, and if you set it up right and download the right apps you can do pretty much everything from the watch. The Note 4 is also a great device. Being so big however the G is a nice change of pace. Finally people talk about the looks. Its a space age looking 2 inch beautiful screen that I get looks all the time and people are amazed. Screen is crystal clear, layout easily learned and very useful. Size was concerning at first but it's very comfortable. My wife who generally is not technical even commented favorably. Loving my Gear S - its light, comfortable wear and the screen looks stunning. It uses bluetooth to connect to your samsung phone, will then use Wifi as an alternative connection - when neither of these are available, it will auto switch to 3G. Calls are clear to hear, texting is simple (even with the minuscule keypad). Photo gallery is easy to upload, MP3s are easily transferred via the Gear App etc. It doesn't seem to like FB notifications, but works ok with whatsapp, snapchat, gmail etc

Just bought mine yesterday. Found : 1.Battery consumption could be very high under heavy usage (receiving call only)and it's last for 8 hours only. 2. Many notification from social networking applications (fb, twitter, etc) are unable to work. Whatsapp and email attachment can't be expand and review. But this samsung gear S work perfect on receiving and making call or viewing sms (/mms as well?)when it's standalone under multisim. Samsung should offer 50% discount to buyer with gear circle if purchase gear S. Went to an AT&T store here in America today and looked at the Gear S. Beautiful and surprisingly small on my wrist, not large at all. I'm 6'2" and 220lbs, but have smallish wrists for my size. It actually looked small on my arm and very stylish. Hope they get the "stand alone" ability worked out ASAP. Contrary to what AT&T online chat told me, the AT&T store said I can get this for $199 with a 2 years contract and $30 a month for Unlimited Talk & Text, with 300MB data (cheapest plan) as my actual cell phone (no pairing or adddition phone on the plan?). Not sure who is right at this point??? Waiting for the big 3 carriers to get the act together and activate a few of these before jumping in. Fingers crossed!

I just chatted with AT&T in the US online to see if you can use their $150 discount for switching carriers and porting your number over with this device. They told me this device is NOT CONSIDERED A PHONE, but an "accessary." That means you can not take advantage of their carrier switch offer. In addition, they will NOT let you use this as you only phone. They claim you MUST have a compatible smart phone too. What a bunch of BS! Can this be purchased in factory unlocked form somewhere? @neil. Today I found the user manual for this watch. Yes, there is mentions of pairing. The wording is *can* , and not *requiered*. Firmware seems to be upgradable with Samsung Kies or OTA. I'm canceling my pre- order untill it's clear on how this actualy work and what devices are supported. I'm not going with a Samsung phone for a Samsung watch.

This device it the perfect companion for using a tablet as a cell phone. I currently use the Note 10.1 2014 (SM-P605) as my only cell phone. Yes this is an actual cell phone. It is the non US variant. It is so great using one device for everything. I use to carry around a cell phone and a tablet. Apparently the set up is the same as the gear 2. It needs to be paired with a Samsung device with Android 4.3 or later. Lastly, also if there is a solar charge too 4 ever emergency so that we don't have to worry for charging. Even now also sometimes many people having problem 2 charge their mobiles when they are out of station. I currently have the gear 2 and LOVE it. The Gear S looks nice, but without a camera I won't be buying one. I use my camera often while hiking, riding my motorcycle and many other times a wrist camera comes in extremely handy. To remove a feature that many people use seems more like a downgrade than an update. I'm hoping a Gear S2 is just around the corner which will include a camera.

I think the Samsung Gear S is appealing for a smart watch technology. I like the face, the colors that are offered, the photo and video viewer, the resolution and how it is water resistant. Smartphone cameras are very useful in everiday pro life, not only to make video calls but, just to cite an example, when reading panels with several info om them instead of noting everything down every time. A simple camera would have been more useful than a dual core processor IMHO. Not really substituting the possession of a smartphone yet.

Perfect specs for a smartwatch. Just needs to run full Android rather than Tizen. I really appreciate this as the first smartwatch with acceptable display resolution. - Run Android. - More normal width band. This looks ridiculous. - Mirasol type display would be better for battery and outdoor visibility. I don't care about color quality for images on a tiny screen.

Do you know what the major stepback other than camera? It needs a Android 4.3 compatible Samsung device to install apps on the watch, which keeps it from becoming a fully standalone watch.

Nice but... Take the screen 'right to the edge' sensors and other buttons that take screen real estate MUST be put on the leading edges; lots of room there. The device is way too thick. Needs to be 6-8 mm thick max, it's not a "brick" FFS! How many iterations of this do we need to refine it to what is really needed? Do Samsung do ANY market research at all?!

As for Apple�s entry: Steve Jobs absence has never been so apparent. Apple's entry doesn't really meet the "Apple look" requirement and it isn't a standalone cell phone either. Looks like every other cheap Chinese wearable rectangle with a watch strap; very disappointing IMHO. The Samsung Gear S looks promising.

No camera is a little bit of disappointment, but it can connect to wifi and 3g itself without needing a smartphone and has its own sim so it seems to be a small smartphone and i'm pleased with it.

I hate to say this but, judging from the current GEAR. I wouldn't be caught dead spoting this on my arm. Applewatch on the other hand, is something I WANT to wear, there's a certain appeal and definitely more functionality to it than what SAMSUNG has done. GEAR needs a major overhaul. get rid of the plastic look and make the hardware customizable. I think then will GEAR be a real contender. Apple just pooped on every smart watch. sad

Excellent, this is the first REAL smartwatch. The only things stopping me buying the model as soon as it's on the shelves are: 1. No front-facing camera 2. No wireless charging (but keep the micro-usb too!) 3. Cautious about Tizen/app support compared to Android No one of these is a fatal lack, just the combination.

I "like it" and "don't like it" at the same time. Better than earlier efforts but still a 'work in progress'. NEEDS to reduce the bezels and save screen real estate. I think it is 'necessary' to make a wrist device "thinner" because this unit is "half an inch thick"! when many phones are 6-8mm thick, and getting thinner by design. Needs a camera of sorts, more ROM & more RAM.

Looks more like a watch now than a device and it is also what consumers wanted a mobile phone in a wrist watch. I'm a little let disappointed that it has no camera / media devices built in. Maybe there next model if there is one my include these features. Thera was a second galaxy gear but they were only improvements on the first. I have the original galaxy gear but I'm not overly impressed as development of apps is rather slow if any. Proper non web based apps will run on the gear with a work round but it seems though after about 3 reboots they disappear and you cant get them back.
