I have my z170 for about 3+ years and my orginal battery (that comes up with the handset itself) is dead, I have tried many batteries other than the one that comes up with the handset itself.. but none will last for barely 8hours being idle. I am quite confused whether I should buy new battery(again) or just leave this cool handset for new one. I dnt wanna leave it too .. guys some good suggestions, would be handfull and good.

I have this phone since 2 years now! It's great, I have clean it with water :D, after the water is gone, it worked perfect! I Use earphones, big volume, at least 24 hours of battery! amazing!

...heres a glitch i personally found on my own....on camera mode,when u use frames it automatically reduce the size of ur photo to a smaller resolution...when u switch the camera from back camera to front camera it automatically reduce to 640x480..and when u switch it from front to back it auto to max.....now lets get back to the topic....switch to front camera then set resolution to max,then switch to front camera it auto to 640x480,pick any frame,then switch back to front it auto to max....there u have it,...u have a frame at max resolution..press capture then it says "capture failed"...there u have the glitch!..hehe

This is my 3rd year having Z170 for my daily cellphone. Battery still can standby for 1.5 day, not so bad. I only visit Samsung's SC once to be reflashed, because of my own foolishness installing unknown Java apps. I dropped it at least twice, from 1 Meter high to concrete floor, and make its corner dent but even the battery cover won't loosen or crack. I mistakenly put it in my shirt pocket during rain, I don't realize it because of slim and light, when I drove my motorcycle, get wet and it is still on. I can use it as modem instantly in my netbook's ubuntu..I really love it!

IMHO, the best way is re-flashing your Z170 at Samsung's service center. But maybe you can try Bolt 2.0 from boltbrowser.com , I can play Youtube using this browser without having to switch to full screen in my Z170.

to those who want to know how to lock your keypad just go to your Settings and select Phone Settings then choose auto keypad lock then click on..it will then lock your keypad automatically..

this is my 2nd years using this phone and there is still has no problem using it. for entertainment its just fine with me i can browse internet by netfront or with opera. view video in you tube like a pc just open and then streaming right away. for audio just find not to loud a little bit 'treble' but when using earphone its very loud and clear.

Correcting some mistakes in my before comment: If you were looking for a symbian compatible phone adn this wasn't one, go look for a smartphone.... The only VIDEO files it can play is 3GP, it can paly a lot of media files. The phone is the same thickness as the bottom part of the motorola razr v9... I meant if the phone was atleast 4cm shorter it would be perfect... not just 4cm(that would be weird). PS: The phone is incredibly light...

This is a great phone... got it for $32 from Knox City Dick Smith locked to vodafone UNBELEIVABLE.... It has 3G, Bluetooth, Video(w/recording), music, microsd(probably up to 4GB) and much more.... The features listed are all accurate... and great... Most phones don't have much internal memory, this one ahs 55mb... and you could possibly survive on it for atleast 2 weeks... I dont know about symbian but it has document viewer... I palyed a Powerpoint presentation and looked at a PDF just yesterday.... If this phone dosen't have WORD, or powerpoint... get a smartphone like the Nokia 3120/3121 which are symbian compatible.... seriously, looking at the price of this phone... you'd be lucky it had a colour screen. The phone size is comparitively small to something like the Nokia N95 or the Webslider, but you can see videos greatly, DON'T NOT buy the phone because of the screen size.. its actaully great screen size for a phone... It is actually very slim, it's the same size as the motorola V9's keypad part. The headphones are actually special samsung ones that only samsung can make, so don't break the ones that you get with the phone... the videoing is suprisingly good for 3GP.. and the camera is good for 1.3 MP too.... The talk time maybe 3 hours but watching and playing media files dosen't take much battery power, so its all good. The phone has a customizable button on the right and can play practically all music files (from .wav-mp3-m4a-mp4-aac etc) The only media files it can play is 3GP sadly... but you can just install samsung PC studio(Which comes with the phone), and use the video editor on itto save your desired video to 3GP, or you could always download 3GP Files or convert to 3GP with a convertor from the internet.... The only problem is the games... But apparently you can add games with a freeware called TKFileExplorer2.2(search these opinions for the how to add games ) but you can also add games downloaded from samsung through the phones internet... The phone is actaully very tall, if it were 4cm it would be perfect.. it's even taller the the n95 when its not slided up, but i guess nothings perfect.. the size and lack of variety in colour is probably the main reason why it costs so less, yet it has an intresting/fashionable and professional design.... So I like the whole design and the overall effect of the phone... Inconclusion, the phone has a great effect overall and is better than most $150 phones these days... but I guess opinions change when you actually go and look at the phone in a shop or something...

Hey i found out how to change the text message tone on SGH Z170, you have to go into settings then phone profiles then highlight normal then go options then edit and go across to the envelope icon and change 'message alert tone' But i have a problem, for some reason it can only load sounds in midi format. Is there a way to change this?

The backlight dims in 10 seconds and in 5 seconds the display is gone totally as if the phone is off. But, when I press any button on the fone..it lightens up again. Is it normal or is there some fault with the phone ? I have tried all the settings..Thanks

This phone is horrible. You can't connect it to a pc, you can't do anything with it. The 3G connectivity is so slow, dial up is faster. I put it in my pocket.. and if you hit an SOS number by accident.. it'll ask you to dial. Of course, you wouldn't expect to hit the yes button, but even if you hit any other buttons APART from Green/Yes/OK.. it does not time out. As a result.. I ended up dialing SOS many times. Would not reccommend it...

hi matt, i had the same problem too, but i resolve it when i reinstall samsung PC suit again, first of all u mast install the disc and after that u mast connect your phone cable into usb hub and computer will recognize phone automatically. sorry for bad eng. :)

I hope this tutorial will help you install games on your cell phone. This works perfectly on samsung sgh z170. (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vb...p?t=609664). Each game should have a jar and a jad file. First you need to put your jar and jad files in one folder and save it under Local Disk (C ). 1. Download Driver & File Explorer from (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vb...p?t=609664). 2. Uncompress (or extract to) SAMSUNG_Composite_USB_Driver and execute Setup.exe. 3. Connect phone to PC. First time you should be prompted with a 'device installed and ready' message. 4. Execute TkFileExplorer_2.2.exe 5. Go to Settings - COM. 6. Scroll down Port window: You should get just one COM option. Choose it and press OK. 7. Go to File - Connect. You should see the File System Tree at TkFileExplorer bottom half side. 8. Go to /Exe/Java or you can go to Media/Games. 9. At TkFileExplorer upper side open Local Disk ( C ) and select JAD/JAR folders which you have saved previously and drag and drop them under Java or under Game folder. 10. Then under File menu choose disconnect then exit. 11. Dial *#6984125*# on your phone. This will open the 1.software version, 2. pre-configuration, 3. network and call settings, 4. internals 12. Choose Internals (Master Key: *#9072641*#) 13. Go to Storage Settings and select Update Media database, Update Java DB and Update application database. 14. Open the games folder in your phone and start the game! Enjoy! ...and save money! NOTE 1: You do not need to change Samsung USB mode to Qualcomm. Leave it at its default Samsung mode (if you do not understand this just do nothing ) Note 2: Be careful! Once you are inside TkFileExplorer dont delete any built-in folders as this may damage your phone. Also before physically disconnecting the cable from your phone, disconnect it first from the File menu Note 3: If the game has only a jar file, you have to make a jad file from the jar file by using the java maker which you can download from (http://www.softpedia.com/get/I...Maker.shtml) All you have to do is to drag the jar file into the "Make Jad" window and a jad file will appear in the desktop.

Put your card in a cardreader connected to your PC, transfer the file to the card and then insert the card on the phone. It'll be faster and easier. Same thing with music, photos or whatever the media you would like to carry on your phone.

The Samsung z170 is really good coz it has good features of an expensive phone. im gettin it 4 x mas ! i saw it in a catalouge and thought it was great. Z170 amazing phone. To listen music, i connect z170 to hifi via aux/audio out, good sound. To play game i download from gameloft, it cost 10000 rupiah each game or about 1 usd, there are 83 game compatible for z170. To browse internet i use opera mini 4.2 faster than netfront. To download wallpaper, ringtones (from mobile.zedge) game(from gameloft via your operator,mine im3,indosat) ,application(from getjar) use netfront. z170 best price for performance.

yes, u can use mp3 for sms tone. in phone profile, go to message field, when u click "change", choose "use my alert tone". then from here, u can already pick the mp3 song from ur files.

this phone is all right it comes with a black battery cover and a pinky reddish one as well a battery charger a usb this phone is really long but really skinny i think it is to skinny the camera is all right it is sorta loud it is abouut as loud as any other samsung i have no problems except for the usb cant connect it with my computer but i have a memory card adapter which i can just put that in my computer i didnt have any games when i got mine so i downloaded 2 from vodafone live and 2 from gameloft and they just went to the game folder and nothing is wrong with them i dropped it in the sink once and nothing happend so far i reckon the battery is all right because i use my phone all the time it is my mp3 my computer my pager my psp and all that stuff it is a good phone for its price but i wish i would have got the samsung j700 instead i have had this phone for a few months now and it is all right any questions ill get back to ya

Samsung liar!, it's not (trully) 3G with max. 384Kbps transfer rate (speed). When it connect to my computer, its automatically detected as samsung CDMA and max speed only 230,00 Kbps. Fortunatelly it runs stabil and PnP. (its depend on your network). it is good enaough but I'll try another brand. sorry samsung

Installing application like Mobile Bible ( ) is the same as installing games. You have to put the jar/jad folder into the Games folder. However, I found that the TkFileExplorer can detect folders saved under Local Disk(C:). This means that there is no need to open the Samsung PC Studio. So, when you download jar and jad files from the internet save them under Local Disk(C). When you open the TkFileExplorer and click Local Disk you will see the jar/jad folders under it. You can directly drag them into the Games folder. I hope this is informative.Thanks...

Bro. Iah, I found that it is more convenient to drag the jar/ jad file folders to the folder games under media.It works too. Actually you can drag as many jar/jad folders or games ( but each folder should have different names ) as you like at the same time and install them altogether. Regarding step 13, 14, and 15 just dial *#6984125*# on your idle phone just like dialling a phone number. This will open the admin setting in your phone. Under which you will see 1.Software Version 2. Pre-configuration 3.Network and call settings 4. Internals. Choose or open internals and enter the master key *#9072641*# then ok. Then under internals choose or open the 7.Storage Settings. Under storage settings Update media data base, and Update Java DB. No need to Update app database, and Create Ax Dat File. When you open the games and more in your phone you will see your games/applications already installed! Goodluck!!!

When you open settings you will only see one com#. Don't change the com# displayed, just choose it. Also close the Samsung PC Studio and restart your phone before you open the TkFileExplorer. Feel free to ask me if you encounter a problem. Thanks....

I paid only $39 AU for this phone and it's excellent. The audio from the speaker is decent and the music from the headphones ain't bad either. The video and the photos look ok as well. It's a basic all rounder phone that is definitely not expensive and provides you will pretty much all you would want for gadgets.

The Samsung FunClub allows only installing games via wap and not directly from PC to phone via cable or bluetooth. Officially, samsung phones does not support installing games/applications via samsung PC studio and bluetooth.All samsung phones are java capable but in most samsung phones it is not activated. Usually it can only be activated by downloading via wap. The service provider activates it. If you want to download/install games via bluetooth or cable you have to use the activation code and TkFileExplorer software.

Download Driver & File Explorer from (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?­t=609664). 2. Uncompress (or extract to) SAMSUNG_Composite_USB_Driver_4_34_WHQL.zip and execute Setup.exe. 3. Connect F480 to PC. First time you should be prompted with a 'device installed and ready' message. 4. Execute TkFileExplorer_2.2.exe 5. Go to Settings - COM. 6. Scroll down Port window: You should get just one COM option. Choose it and press OK. 7. Go to File - Connect. You should get the F480 File System Tree at TkFileExplorer bottom half side. 8. Go to /Exe/Java/Games 9. Create a New Folder for your game 10. At TkFileExplorer PC upper side select game JAD/JAR files and copy to F480 created folder using drag&drop or right button menu Download option. 11. Repeat steps 9 & 10 for all games you want to install at a time. 12. Disconnect USB cable 13. Dial *#6984125*# 14. Go to Internals (Master Key: *#9072641*#) 15. When I drag the the jar and jad files from the desktop of my computer to the window of TkFileExplorer under phone as I usually do with samsung PC studio, it was not downloaded. So I open the Local Lisk (C:) at the upper left side window of TkFileExplorer, and under Drive D I open desktop. However, the jar and jad files were not there. No jar/jar files to download! So I first open samsung PC studio and from the desktop of my computer I drag the jar/jad files into the "Other Files" and put them in a new folder then close the samsung PC studio.( note: each game should have its own folder). After restarting my phone (turn off and then on, this is necessary),I open TkFileExplorer. From the phone window of TkFileExplorer I open 'media' then 'Other Files', and then I drag the jad/jar file folder into the Local Disk (C:) at the upper left side of TkFileExplorer window. After transferring the folder I open 'Exe' then Java and then I drag the jad/jar folder from the local disk back into 'Java' folder. Under the the File Menu I click 'disconnect'. I then enter the codes into my phone and under Storage Settings I Update media database, Update Java DB, Update application database and Create Ax Dat File. When I returned to the 'Games and more' under my phone, the game was already installed!!! Happy gaming and goodluck to all samsung users!!! Note 2: Be careful! Once you are inside TkFileExplorer dont delete any built-in folders as this may damage your phone. Also before physically disconnecting the cable from your phone, disconnect it first from the File menu Note 3: Each game should have a jar and a jad file. I'm not sure if I'm answering your question. But based on my samsung sgh z170 experienced, I found that in the pre-configuration, it was pre-configured to Vietnam. So I pre-configured it to philippines. Here's how I did it: In the idle mode press *#6984125*# , it will open the admin setting.1) Software Version 2) Pre- configuration 3) Network and call setting 4)internals. Open 2)pre-configuration and enter the operator code *#73561*# then select Philippines. That's all. By the way the master key for the 4)internals is *#9072641*#. Just be careful, repeatedly opening the internals will sometimes slow down your cellphone's performance for several minutes, but it will return to normal, just wait for several minutes or hours.Particularly dont open the Create NV under the Storage Settings, it will change the languange settings ( maybe just in my case- it was changed to some asian language!). But I was able to restore the English language by openig settings in the idle mode, choose 4)phone settings then under phone settings choose 1)language. I just research these codes from the internet. Thanks.

You can call a customer service representative and ask them to send you settings for gprs/mms which you will use to send pictures and songs. If the gprs is already activated, you will see a G symbol at the upper left side of your screen. However, even if my gprs was already activated< I still cannot surf the web. The representative advise me to contact globe service center for the activation.

When I call the called the customer service representative to sent me wap setting to enable me to connect to the internet she said that they dont have available setting for wap only setting for mms/gprs.She advise me to contact globe service center ( my sim is touch mobile) for the activation of the service. HELLO guys, I have a problem with my 1 day old Samsung z170. These are the two problems: 1. When I tried to create Groups list in the Phonebook, I said it saved but there's no group name appearing in the groups list. Only the "blank" text appears. Then if I retyped the group name to save(even though I can't see it) then the phone will prompt: "Name Already in Use". But still I see nothing in the group list except the "blank" text. You this feature is quite important for me coz I often forward one text message to group of people that I've categorized. 2. Why does the keytone: xylephone and beep where the same. This really makes the phone noisy when upon use. I try the silent mode(and the keytone was disable) but it was impractical in different situation since there's no message/call tone if I used this profile. nope, so far, it only recognizes mp3 and WMA file formats but if you want to be practical, you should choose WMA over mp3 or better start converting your mp3s to WMA because it has lesser bytes as compared to mp3s and youll save a lot of memory the only setback? it doesnt recognize WMA as a ringtone sound, just MP3

you can change the message tone with mp3 files: go to phone profiles, choose options then edit. press the right navigator to move to the message settings tab. choose message alert tone, select change and select "use my alert tone". from there, you can browse your files of mp3s that we want to set as your message tone. remember to save settings/changes before you exit.

Extra budget for us... - There's no 2,5mm jack or converter included, so I have to forget playing this thing to my car stereo. - The space button is on the # button. For a phone this slim, it's easy to slip and drop your phone. - Back panel is not the easiest to open. Opening fels like you're gonna brake the whole thing. Capabilities & Functions PROS= - 3G. Obviously. I enjoyed the video calls very much. Haven't tried for TV streaming. - Periodical sms alert really helps when you missed one. Simple but effective. - The Living World screen. It's awesome. The sky looks clear when you have full signal. Some clouds when signal is low and dark cloudy sky when no signal. Also the sky is dark at night and bright in the morning. The name says it all - Living World. Even for a business guy like me this feature is too fun to miss! - Synchronizes well with Outlook. If you're a business person this will come handy at times. - Offline mode. - 1000 phonebook + SIM, 500 sms and plenty of room for e-mails. - Google browser and mail works great. - Speakerphone works great. And the ringtones are so loud, including for sms. I wonder where those guys complain about the sms ringtone being too slow - you have to use the 'my alert' and not just 'effect'. No problem at all. - Call reject list. This is a great tool when you have people with hidden caller ID trying to annoy you. CONS= - Won't read first names from phonebooks (Whast were they thinking?). Darn, I had to convert all of the names on my old phonebook. Only took 5 minutes to take care though. - Can't change sms alert to WAV or MP3. - Calendar memory is too small, I used a PDA before and it won't synchronize all calendar events. Too bad! - Can't serve as a 'plug and play' mass storage to a PC. - It crashed my laptop when unplugging after synchronizing. Hmm, what did I do wrong?! OVERALL PROS= - Design is awesome. - Meets your daily functions: sms, calendar, calls, web browsing, camera and camcorder, mp3, you name it. - Battery lasts almost as advertised with normal use. - Price!!! It's really cheap! CONS= - No Operating System. Couldn't really tweak this baby to do anything else but what it said it should do. - Signal is a bit low inside buildings without in door transmitters. - Looks a bit feminine. CONCLUSION It's simple yet effective! So if you're concerned about budget then this phone is for you. i can't change the message tone with mp3 file, the screen size really border me, i think, it's too small, but it's a glamour 3G phone

i got this Phone nd its cool!!!! its aviable in spain since april here and when i bought it i try to search in the net an i didnt find it.. i thought it was a prototipe or something like that.......well i prefer the k610i, this is only to look cool.....

For a low end 3G phone 1.3 Mpix camera is perfect. Remember that many phones still use 0.3 Mpix ones.

Nice looking phone but needs better features coz a 1.3 m/p camera just doesnt cut it nowadays.

Nice low end phone, I just wish the screen would be a bit bigger and I dont really like the 1.3 mega text on the back, but except this it looks good!
