I bought one from ebay this year, delivered from china, probably reconditioned one. one lasts for 1-2 month, then no longer possible restart; second one last for 2-3 month, dead finally also by a slight knock to ground, then no screen.... I used to love all it has, but d***m, with these failures i won't step any more on it!! i still will replace by another phone No-smartphone to use daily life! *sign* anyhow W980's quality really not robust, fragile, that's what i feel

Great Phone in my opinion if related to styling. Not for the one's who prefer features more than Style. If Your looking for a Music Phone with some Style, then this is definitely the one to go for. Though, be aware if Your Phone gets damaged, it might not be repaired again as the Parts have been discontinued. Just recently bought a piece from Ebay.

my original charger was not working. someone gave me a chinese charger ( the ones having 10 different pins). i charged my phone with that. that worked for 1 month and then the charger wasn't functioning. that man took the charger and told me to have fixed it. i gave charge to my W980 with that and then finally the next morning i figure it out that my phone is not getting on. can you please tell me what is the Problem and how can i fix it

I have to disagree, been using mine regularly since April 2009 and despite a lot of abuses, no problems whatsoever. Speakers are very good and not even the extreme humidity of the Azores is able to ruin them.

This model is aesthetically beautiful, but unfortunately have some fatal weakness, such as the speakers (which have low quality, prone to damage), and the main software which is installed in the internal storage, which also prone to become corrupt due to bad performance of the internal storage. Other than its glossy appearance which attracts fingerprints, this phone is quite okay la.

I have this phone for almost 4 years until it gave up last Monday. The best phone I ever had. Enjoyed the very best of its specs. Sadly, when I have someone fix it, he said there are no parts available in our country. Except for it's not so good camera when recording vids,but reso on it's photos are good. you need to download and install the sony ericssion update manager and connect your mobile to the computer and update your phone throught the software and the update software wil reinstall everything onto your phone and when its done your phone should work again make sure your phone is charged before updating it using the software on the computer

im having a problem regarding my phone, whenever i turned it off and remove the battery especially when it is not full, when i tried to turn it on the phone will not boot, only the keypad lights will turn on, it happens to me more than 5 times and the only way to fix it (free) was to reformat it and update the software using the sony ericsson updater, i dont want to always update and format my phone,, thus everybody encounters this problem??? any suggestion will be greatly appriciated..

for those of you who always experience crashes using this mobile, go to http/sonyericsson.com/support and download the software updater, follow the instructions and update your phone to the latest software, this phone was prone to crashes so have that software install in your computer to revive the your phone,, it fixes black screen and any types of software related problems,, if your phone wont turn on, or only the keypad lights that was turning on when you turn on your phone just update the software, no need to send it to shops or to sony for repairs,,

i have this phone since it was launch and it is a very reliable phone, after 4 yrs now the clamp lock was little bit loose maybe because of extensive use, no problem so far, only frequently i update the software because it hangs up and wont open 2x a year i update the software because it crashes, but other than that the phone was reliable and looks good even it is out dated, very good mobile

good phone! nice music! u can install a lot of java apps and games. items are organized in folders and it automatically registered musics on albums. and good battery life. downfalls: a little bit in camera(but not that bad), sometimes the phone hangs on me.

as far as I know my SE phones sometimes do develop some problems with the charger, sometimes the connector gets loose and doesn't charge. You can try to fix te contacts on the charger (they get slightly bent downwards) or clean the contacts on the phone because they can get dirty and prevent the phone from charging

I have this phone and I have to say it is pretty good the camera is very good in my opinion and the sound quality is amazing especially when you are listening it through the headphones, comparing sound quality of w980 and w995 which I own as well I have to say that the overall quality with the w980 is top notch. The largely spaced keypad allow for very fast typing and the FM transmitter comes in very handy when you want to listen to your tracks in your car never to say the 8gb internal is plenty of space of space for files (I currently have over 300 tracks and plenty of space left)sad thing is no wifi abig letdown in my opinon the big seperation from the w980 and the w995, also the volume is loud,louder then w995 but I think it has more potential to be louder like the Nokia 5130. Also needless to say the front touch screen gets pretty scratched so it is advised to get some screen protection, I ended up buying one and replacing it. Overall the phone is very good and would reccomend it for music lovers and for general multimedia and consumer use :-)

Well, I have to say that I am using the w980 for a year and a half and sometimes I don't feel it vibrating in my pocket. I assumed it was just because it was slimmer than my other phone (a 3 years old SE K810i) that I sense perfectly when it is vibrating. So, now that you mention it my older K810i vibrates stronger than my newer w980, so maybe new SE phones have this problem...

Replying to umair Riaz Mughal are you sure you haven't activated any call restrictions on your mobile? In your post you don't state that, you don't say you confirmed if they are on or off but you say the phone is bad and that we shouldn't buy it. Hey, you haven't even said if you have gone to SE assistance to repair the phone or to see what is wrong. It seems to me you are saying the phone is bad when it is possible that you are not using it right. I have mine for more than 18months and it always worked JUST perfectly. Hope You get yours running good so that you can enjoy it as much has I do.

Hi! In reply to you, I have to say I have this phone for about 18 months, use it a lot and it is working just fine and I love it. simple to use and great build quality. I agree with most of what you have said, except for the part of being java and not having multitasking support. Yes it is java, and yes sometimes we can't find exactly what we want in java but it is multitasking capable. SE phones can handle multiple java apps at the same time with true multitasking. Not like cheaper Chinese phones or Nokia Series 40 phones which can't do that and only have one application at a time. For example, I always have the walkmate app running to count for my daily steps and at the same time I can have Gps app, games, texting or listening to music. So, I can run more than one Java application at one time.

Dear friends, A week ago I bought Sony Ericsson W980� (Not actually for me though�) and quite impressed by certain features and also very disappointed by some others� Compared to Nokia 5530, followings are the things that I�ve noticed� Look and feel SE W980 wins here� It has dual display� Flap design� Nice touch music buttons� Very cool color effects during music play back� Thin design� etc.. 5530 also has a good look (where my preference stands�) but I think most of the people would find W980 look is more appealing.. Music Quality Music Quality wise Nokia 5530 wins over W980�! It�s not because SE Walkman series has poor sound quality� It�s mainly because SE W series has pre-defined Music rather than pure music� (Get what I�m saying�?) I mean� Sony people always make their sound out put in order to suit for the high bass and accordingly more distorted sound experience� Most of ordinary people are mislead by this as �Great sound� but actually it is more or less modified sound� Besides, SE W series equalizer is pretty restricted.. (Lesser no of bands� freedom to change each band are pretty limited�) We can modify manual preset but we really can�t fine tune that� However still W980 gave me good Music (with exaggerated bass though) and loudness of Music is also pretty good� Camera Camera is great in W980 compared to 5530� Without any modification it took so beautiful natural colored photos� (There is more yellow tint in some photos though�) Even though it doesn�t have a flash, it took considerably better photos than my phone.. Build Quality Build quality is not so good in W980 compared to 5530 but the back cover is so much better than our poor quality back cover� (Nokia should consider of giving us more durable and good looking rubber back covers�) Features Here I think both phones have their own pros and cons� W980 has 3G with video call camera� 8 GB internal memory� 5530 XM has Wifi, bigger screen with greater resolution and greater color (16M vs 256k) & 4 GB out of the box. Performance At first, the mobile (W980) hanged and restarted several times� It wouldn�t last for at least 30 minutes without restarting� I was beginning to hate SE W series� But then I just checked for firmware updates and found out there is one available.. Then I updated the phone and now it�s working like a charm� But overall performance wise, My 5530 is way better than SE W980� (I mean 5530 is faster) Software installation The last and most important thing� Software installation� In this area, there is no match for Symbian�! SE W980 clearly sucks�! It�s a totally worthless phone if you intend to have so many 3rd party applications in your mobile phone� I searched google but found only JAVA software which don�t even support multi tasking�! So in that case, SE W 980 is no better than very cheap Chinese phones�! (So it definitely is not my choice�) But after all, the person who is using it (My mother) is very very happy with it.. She has got very cute phone that she always wanted� It�s got video calling� and she can listen to music for so many hours� Camera takes great photos� and the phone doesn�t hang often� and after all, she doesn�t need any 3rd party software at all� So I don�t have to say, it�s the ideal phone for her� As for the conclusion�, I think when we�re buying a phone, we should always consider what are our needs� without considering our needs, if we�re going to get the best phone out there, it will be completely worthless if we don�t intend to use the best features of it�.! So it�ll be always better, if we could find what is best for us� Not the best phones out there� Don�t you guys think so�?

If anyone from my contact list calls me than this phone remains ok but if some one calls me from numbers other than my contact list than this phone always hangs and even i can not receive calls which is the major fault in this phone. aaaaaaaaah im really quite sad with the phone because ive had it for about 1 year and its really user friendly and the design is pretty unique, but recently it broke down about 5 times within 2 months!! i had to send it to the sony shop so many times but the problem keeps coming back - the phone screen doesnt switch on..only the keypad lights come on - especially after i try to connect it to the computer!

Good phone in general. It takes a while to start up and for the screen to come on. And it's really really hard to take out the simcard if you wanted to switch it - need to use tweezers or sth, I found it annoying when I was trying to switch a simcard as another phone ran out of battery. It tends to freeze every now and then, it's usually ok tho, occasionally "reboots" itself.

I have had this phone for two years now, and I love it! Its a great phone, perfect for my mp3 and podcast needs. I love the fact that it has a built-in f, transmitter, which means I can listen to my stuff anywhere there is a radio (car, home, friends car). The internet connection isnt the fastest outnthere, but its pretty good. And the phone has actual video call, unlike many new smartphones out there (motorola drioid, iphone 4, etc). I also love how i can write down a note or todo list and have it displayed on the home screen.

Have had mine for 13 months. Is the first SE phone I've used. Generally happy with it, but hate the calendar. Was used to Nokia calendars which have good interface with alarms and notes on standby screen. This phone's calendar is almost useless. Do not understand your concerns with the earphone... you must have a different piece from the ones we get here in Portugal... My earphone from this phone is absolutely superb! Best audio ever! Love it, its looks, the audio, the general quality, how it is easy to use, lightweighted and all. One thing which could be improved is stand-by time, compared with my other Sony Ericsson a K810i is smaller. Maybe because of a smaller capacity battery and more power consumption due to the two screens and the light effects?

The problem with Charging/USB socket is sth common for SE phones.when it gets dirty (or maybe because of Oxidation),you can use a small brush(like teeth brush) and a little alcohol to clean it.make sure all the pins are completely cleaned. ----- now I have 2 questions: when I want to use FM transmitter,i encounter an Error saying that I can't use it because of restriction of my region or sth like this. This is my third review/comment (I think). I sent my phone to SE service center for the reason that its USB/headset/charging port is not working good anymore. After fixing it with them for a month, I got my phone back again and it works like I got it as brand new. After 3 weeks of use now, I have same problem again but not so much like the first prob. This will go back to problem 1 soon again, too bad my 6 month warranty is done. They should change that charging port like that Nokia. Simple design but it works all the time. I am an SE user ever since but because of what I encountered with this phone, I guess its time to shift brand. I have good hands-on experience on this when I am riding my bike and got hit with a heavy rain along the road, I didn't bother stopping (because a cold beer is waiting for me and a friend hahah) so I got soak wet all over. My wallet at the back pocket, underwear everything including this phone are soaked. Worried that this won't work, I hurriedly open it and, walllahhh!, its still working. I am even texting under light showering rain. I didn't even see moist inside the screen. I think this phone is splash resistance. heheh

BRAVIA phones will not be released world-wide. Those are for Japan, and for Japan only. Sony Ericsson Japan is a completely different company compared to the Western world, a company simply using the 'Sony Ericsson' name for Sony's Japanese mobile phone market. Regardless, lets just say that a Japanese spec SE is released outside of Japan. Such a move won't really be viable because prices will be through the roof. Sure, those with deep pockets will buy them. But then, there ain't alot of such people, and those fitting into that category will most likely stick with Apple and their 'cool / fad' devices. Either way I don't really care; you can get them off 'grey-markets' and get them working somewhat (no MMS, 3G, WAP etc etc, just GSM telephony) with HyperSim modules. If you are interested, I own the Sony Ericsson SO905iCS, SE Japan's docomo branded phone with a 5MP CMOS camera and 3x optical zoom (which is now about 2 years old). That set me back about US$400 at the time. And I doubt SE will find it economically viable to sell such high-end phones (which Japan is 99.99% of the time focused on unlike the Western market with low-end devices still being released). ...Moving onto the W980 I found that I can get some decent performance increases by turning down the brightness down to 50%, and when in WALKMAN, disabling the auto-orientation setting. That does help with the lagging issues.

I m using my w980 from more than 1 and a half year.. the best SE phone ever brought... just update the software to its latest version n it'll charm up removing all minor issues.. also the design is so cool.. n the build quality is the best.. dropped it like so many times on the most rough places but still no issues at all.. never made me gave a single visit to the SE service center... THANKS SE .. Hope u guys release the BRAVIA phone accross the globe..

i am using it since last 10 months and its working gud, yup its charger and ear phone socket gets lose but though just use little amount of WD40 rust remover on a tissue and then rub it on the phoen socket carbon will get off and then it will work fine

Totally unrecommended phone. Within four months of usage, my w980 start to restart all the times, had a blank screen, dysfunctional earphones, and also dysfunctional speaker phones. And yeah, the software always crashes. Just buy another phone, please. Save your money.

after using this phone for about 4 months straight, the headset connector/charger port is loosy. You have to push/insert the headset/charger very hard and wiggle it to the port in order to work. But even so, this will get loose again after 2 seconds or so. Taping the headset into the phone even doesn't work. I believe this is an idiot design for the Sony Engineer. Other phone uses jack thing and it doesn't have a problem like this. It is a walkman phone for 4 months. After that, this is just purely a simple camera phone with huge storage.

Everyone who had the blackscreen issue is a common problem to all the w980 user included me experience blackscreen(cannot start the phone at all) is because the latest firmware(very bad) bug issue. To solve the bug, downgrade to the oldest firmware. Search at GOOGLE website look for the tutorial how to downgrade the firmware. I personal fix this issue 2 months ago, n now everything is alright without any problem any more. So good luck to u all :D

I'm the kind of person who cleans my stuff everyday after using. I only had the W980 for a few months, and despite having no need to clean the front on my previous phone, the W980 is a fingerprint magnet and requires it. The 'piano' black finish seems to be gradually coming off, and my W980 more or less looks transparent than opaque black; I can see the circuitry on the touch flip now... As for battery life, I use a bluetooth headset for about 12 hours a day on the W980 (about 3 hours a day of use, the remaining on standby), and it lasts a good three days. With the included HPM-77, it will last about 5 days; both headsets used with music, calls, texting, and the occasional WAP browsing.

Guys, this phone wasn't designed for camera purposes. So stop whining for the camera (w/c is not in comfy location) functionality. That's why it's W series. This is a walkman phone and it gives you more than enough for playing mp3 songs. I like the Sense Me functionality of this if you want to play songs that fit your mood of the day. :) As for the camera, well, it still give me the best shot even when I am riding my bike at 10kph. Daytime taken pictures were just great. I noticed though that the more songs you load, the more it slows when opening the media player but it never hangs up. I think this is normal if one brain is overloaded. It's front face is very sensitive on scratches so better place a screenprotector both displays the moment you buy it. By the way, use the packed CD SONY PC suite coz it can browse your memory phone (camera/music folder) via bluetooth. I can't explain why the most updated suite I installed can't see the phone memory. Hope this helps.

Just curious, but was wondering if you place the W980 under a light source with the phone flipped down, can you see the 'circuitry' under the gloss finish on the lid? there is 3 kind of menu in the external screen : music player, stand by and radio. music player is the default one, when you touch the key, it will open the current track, then touch it again to play the music(you can also browse your music). in the stand by menu, the key wont show up so you can do nothing. while in radio, you need handsfree to make it work

The front screen made from mineral glass. I personally don't have issues with it, however, it is prone to marks/scatches; ones that are light though unremovable. You'd have to try pretty hard to get deep scratches on the front flip of the W980.

I've had my SE W980 for 7months now and its been great so far. I've taken lots of photos and downloaded lots of games, themes and songs and I still have over 5GB of memory left. The radio works perfect and gives great fm reception on all the stations here (Accra, Ghana). The sound quality of the headphone is however not as great as the one that came with my previous phone which was the SE W850. I've dropped my phone a couple of times and luckily it still works okay. Seriously, I think you should go for it if you are considering it.

My cheap belt bag is not waterproof and I found out while delivering junkmail in letterboxes in the rain that the mobile got drowned and no matter how many times I tried to revive it, it wouldn't come on. Oh well, my mobile insurance company told me to choose a different phone because the W980 is no longer available. So I chose Samsung's S8300 Ultratouch which is over $500 Australian retail but all I only pay is the excess fee $125.00 and the phone is mine.

I was recording video the other day with the W980. OK, the W980 ain't camera orientated but hear me out. From what I understand and read, the W980 can to QVGA at 30fps. But I can only get 14. Can anybody confirm this with their W980? Just record the video with the 'normal' video length setting to get the best possible video on the W980, and try moving that to a folder on Windows or whatever OS you use. Do you get 14fps in Properties or 30? Cheers in advance for all those who are willing to help.

The W980 is a Japanese-designed phone. You may hopefully have realised that Japanese people (and us Asians in general) don't really have the size of 'body built' that Europeans and Western people have (ie, we Asians have small hands thus fingers) The W980 has a extremely well laid out number pad. But yes, you are correct in saying that the D-Pad area is a wee bit crowded. Bad use of space, I'd say...

Why do these idiotic designers always have to place the keys so close together? The keypad on this phone is a great design until you get to the call and cancel keys which are almost molded into the soft keys. Fucking stupid asses... SE arent the only ones, but on most of their phones they have this same tendency of putting the soft keys right next to the call or cancel keys. This is one of the main reasons why I have bypassed a lot of the SE models, cause I hate pressing two or three keys at the same time...

I would have chosen Nokia purely due to the fact that it is alot more customizable than the W980 app-wise. The W980 though cannot be overlooked in regards to audio-quality. SE is not in my good books and hasn't been for a while, but they did get one thing right - audio algorthym. I've gotten through Samsungs, iRivers, Apples, and Sonys, all of which were full-time mp3s and iRiver and Samsung having DSPs unlike the W980, but it beats them all hands-down. I do hear Cowon S9 and the new Sony Walkman A series do pretty well with proper DSPs, but have yet to test them out. Though I guess that the Sony A will sound pretty similar...

I so wanna buy this phone. Luckily i went through the following posts and discovered that this mobile has software issues too. I had a brand new W950i which stopped working in a month or so. Could never powered it again. Tried 1 million things but nothing worked. Even wrote to sony ericsson. Nothing worked. people just be careful, look for all the flaws it has and then go for it if you want to. peace!

I am currently stuck to choose a phone apart from w980 , which has style, look and good specs, wid a nice price tag.(PKR 18000) but i cant find any phone which can beat this phone in the available price tag.. please help me suggest some alternatives...

I'm overseas now in a snow storm and tried taking photos this morning. I saw the pink tinge issue which (I think) a HTC suffered from. It's gone now, but I think it occured due to cooler temperatures (-12'C). Just something I thought would be good to share. The newer firmware does seem to make the navigation using the external screen slightly laggy. But that is the only issue I have. Everything else, including the visual bugs which I ain't too happy with but is copable, are still there with the new firmware, so unless you are having issues, I wouldn't recommend an upgrade.

The FM transmitter is banned in some countries. The firmware your W980 has is the main and only factor. The fact that your Nokia's transmitter works means it has a firmware not designed for your country, OR your W980 has a firmware incorrect for your region. Getting your W980 flashed at your local phone store with another country's firmware should fix that up lickety split.

i think both have the same loudness. well, it depends or your speaker condition's too. in fact, its walkman. any walkman had loud speakers compare to other series of SE..well,in my opinion.. =)

I've been using SE phones for a couple of years and i find this phone overall not bad. Although sometimes the sensitivity of the walkman screen isnt good, but its mostly ok.

the FM transmitter is like u can connect your walkman (your songs inside the phone) to the radio and listen it through the speaker.it works with the audio player inside the car too. but u must synchronized the frequency first,if I'm not mistaken. by the way,i used my friend's w980 cause I'm using w960..

So have you tried updating the firmware at all? This is my 3rd year using SE and I've yet to experience freezing or any software related issues. I can't really say call clarity on the W980 is good. It's ok, but I can't call it good. Samsung does well in loud places (me being an ex-Samsung user), but with the W980 the sound is too 'breaky' and sounds pretty bad. To top that off, the mike is in the wrong place. But then , the W980 does better in quieter places.

First can i just say I have been a faithful SE user for quite some years. I have one of these. I took one in replacement for a snazzy SE K850i camera Phone, which kept locking up on me. To be fair, As a phone its been spot on, call clarity A1, although a few issues with the original firmware but after that all was good. APART FROM the FM transmitter. I used it to kisten to an album at work and hey presto, the phone locked up, and basically, everytime i use the fm transmitter now, it does the same thing, it has now even extended to normal mp3 playback using headphones now. Not impressed. Too much crammed into too small a space methinks. Gonna get me a Nokia nextime round

If you recently just bought it, then it is likely to be second hand and requires a deep format. Go into file manager and format the memory there. Although you can use Windows to format the memory, it ain't recommended. OR, you can update the firmware to the latest one (provided you have yet to do so) which will format the memory for you - saves formatting twice. If you've had the phone for a while, then try searching the phone with Windows and see what is taking up the space. It is probably a file somewhere away from the file manager structure (like a random Windows made thing) Hope that helps.

The new firmware I have noticed a SLIGHT improvement in GUI speeds. Not as laggy, but still not a decent improvement (better than nothing I guess). Camera quality seems to have decreased - have to use a bit more to know fully. Music - bass is slightly increased. Me being a high-end audiophile, the difference is there, but again, the difference is only slight. Treble / high-ends seem constant / unchanged. Visual bugs that I saw in the previous firmware are still present on the new one. Although I would suggest upgrading the firmware to fix possible problems, you HAVE to backup your data. The update will format the memory and you will lose whatever is inside the phone. Too bad the W980 don't have a memory card since I couldn't backup my applications (and I don't use the SE Suite - too much bloatware involved). The phone's firmware also resets EVERYTHING setting-wise. Basically, it is like starting your phone from a factory state - you have to re-set everything to your liking. I should have waited till the update via GUI was available... Updating via PC should need approx. 80MB (depending on what firmware you have now and where you live) Hope that helps

Your country could simply have stopped shipping it in. Simple. Maybe it ain't being sold very well where you live. I know here that the W902 is a real slow seller and most importers have stopped shipping that in. Sony Ericsson is still making these phones, but their priority is now on phones like the Aino (that is, no Cyber-Shot and Walkman branding); they are focusing on 'all-in-ones' now so we won't be seeing Walkman or CyberShot branded SE phones from now on (actually, ever since the Yari was introduced)

This ain't a imaging phone - doesn't have the best camera quality yet still good enough for the occasional blog etc etc. The best thing (obviously) is the music quality. Being an audiophile and having owned quite a few mp3 players in the past (my first one being in 02), this phone would trump the lot in regards to sound quality; the Sony Video Walkman S series (NC edition) comes close though... I have a question though - when playing music with the flip DOWN, I wish to access the track list. The instructions ain't written very well (quite vague...); just wondering how would I access the tracklist on the external screen WITHOUT getting into the WALKMAN menu and into the playlist menu? Because touching DOWN only makes the Walkman picture 'jump' in a pretty manner and nothing else... I know that with the phone flipped OPEN and while in Walkman, pressing down brings up a list of songs in that playlist; how would I get that on the EXTERNAL screen without having to navigate all the way back to the playlist? Apart from that, and a few minor bugs, this is a decent phone. Quite happy I bought it actually, apart from the fact that it is a fingerprint nightmare...

Bought this yesterday, upgrading from my 3 year old W200. Happy with the sound, screen quality and looks a stunner. The bad... - The CPU is rather laggy in my opinion; the W902 which I tested but didn't buy due to build issues has alot more zippy. compared to the W980. - The phone overall is a FINGERPRINT MAGNET. - The camera, in one word, CRAP. Not bad, but CRAP. I did consider W902 for this reaason, but didn't expect the W980 to have such bad quality in this area. Videos show alot of artifacts, which again is disappointing. - Came across some firwmare bugs, but all I need to do is to turn off and turn back on. Am running the latest firmware BTW. All in all, I was after a music-minded phone, the W980 doesn't disappoint in regards to sound quality. The firmware bugs are copable, but still I think they can be further improved. And the camera... Sony should at least consider a different processing alorthym for the images since as it is now, it is unacceptable that a once flag-ship model to have such bad camera quality.

few months ago, i also confused to choose between w595 and w980, but then i choose w980 and i never regret choose it, i love the design, it really nice and the keypad is good, w595 is cheaper but the memory only 2gb and you only get hpm 64 while in w980 you get 8gb and hpm 77 which is have a great sound and i also like the external display and the sensitive touch key is very useful, the camera is really bad in indoor with low light, the position is also bad but not as bad as other people say. w595 is just looks like ordinary phone, i think you get bored soon if you choose w595

@ Fat Albert I have a w595 and w980 which I'm using now. Based on my observations the W595 has louder and better speaker quality compared to the w980. However if you're using the supplied earphones for the two models, W980 has better sound quality due to the earphone material and equalizer presets (for me Clear Bass is better than MegaBass). Also, i've noticed that the w980 has a brighter display. The w980 is almost the same as the w595 in terms of internet connectivity, SMS, battery life etc... The speakers of the w980 isn't a big deal for me since when I bought the phone, it came with a free MPS-80 speaker which has great bass and sound quality.

I would say buy the W902 cos it basically has the same features of W980 except W902 has 5MP camera while the W980 has 3.2MP camera. N it depends which one you like, flip phones or a normal phone.

Oh, and the phone's accelerometer's slow so not a good idea to watch videos because it gets behind like when your watching a movie on it, and the guys speaking but no words are being said, instead the intro or something is playing. Not recommended for watching videos.

bought this phone back in May of this year. haven't had much problems with it, except when i first got it, the phone either restarted by itself (almost everyday) or it froze. it was probably because of the software. got another software for it, and it's been fine since then. here is my take on this phone... PRO: -great music sound (both using earphones and external speakers) -orange light goes on-beat with the music you have -clear reception/voice -FM transmitter (works pretty good, although you'll most likely get some sort of static) -8GB internal memory (yeah, plenty of space) -slider lock on side of phone (so you don't randomly press the buttons at the front) -auto-dimming internal screen -auto-rotating screen (pictures, music) -not too bulky in size and weight -you can organize your text messages into different folders/categories CON: -battery life (the worst was charging every other day. depends how much you use your phone) -easy to scratch external screen & fingerprints -camera location is weird (your finger might get in the way of your pictures) -can't change the light colour (music = orange, incoming call = white/blue. kinda looks like LED) -no memory card slot (inconvenient if you had everything saved in your other phone's M2) nonetheless, i love this phone!

Hmm I've had this phone for an year. The only problems I have encountered are that, it restarts on its own every now and then (around once per week), it lags a little (just like most other sony phones), and the front can be easily damaged.

I bought this phone two weeks back. And its pretty impressive.User Friendly features are excellent. 8GB is more than enough sure beats the iPhone in looks and price,and features except for internet surfing.. Few problems could be - The cover surface though a fingerprint nightmare is even 'not scratch proof' so the slightest scratch can be noticable on close observation.. And the operating system is a lil bit slow than usual sony phones.. probably a microsecond slow but I could feel the difference between my old 580 and this in speed. I just hope Sony makes sexy phones like these in the future or inthe coming year perhaps..when i shall buy a new phone.. Ethan

Mandi! If you don't want your phone is viewed by other people or friends, don't let them borrow your phone. You can prohibit them to not see your personal files. If they can't do what you said, don't lend your phone! You would like to lock your files? Hmmm.. I had read there is an application, named Ultimate SMS (it is compatible for Nokia phones that use Symbian OS only). It can protect messages by password. Many applications like Ultimate SMS and most of them are Symbian OS support only. So, I advice you to find an application that compatible with Java MIDP 2.0 that can protect your files in internet. Hope this will help.

Sheila! In Sony Ericsson Z310i, if you would like to open the flip, but you don't want it answer automatically when someone calls you, go to Settings>Calls>Open to answer, choose Off. So, I think W980 can do that too, but I don't know whether it has that option like in Z310i or not.

u can turn off a call by hitting the volume button twice consecutively. press once it silences the phone. twice it cuts da call.

In my opinion, Sony Ericsson W980 is good. I've seen and touch its dummy. The design is good too. Big internal memory, good features, large colorful external screen like Motorola RAZR, HSDPA support, its keypad made in plastic (seems good). In my country its price is about US$ 279 now.

I think this function is common on Sony Ericsson phones. Connect the phone via USB to the computer, make it a modem for browsing internet for example, will reduce its battery life so fast. So, if you said your phone starts charging when you connect it to the computer, it means your don't need worry if the battery life empty, because your phone is charged while you do something, for example browsing internet. It's quite a great phone actually. The only weakness points it has is that typing messages is not that easy because of the heavy head it consists of. But still it's a great phone. Packed with motion gaming sensor. But mine was just screwed up, sent to warranty after 3rd day of using because the ' activity menu ' button was screwed. Bad experience but still it's a great phone!

It's quite a good phone, I just bought one yesterday on a affordable price (about $197usd) If you are a music lover, this one will fits your need to a decent clam phone. The main LCD and keypad has a glossy finish, so its quite fragile and prone to hairline scratches. The OS is having a hiccup, sometimes, but never bothers me at all. Camera is mediocre - since it is a music phone. All in all, a great music phone and a decent phone in one.

u can use shake control when the w980 is closed by doing the exact same thing when it is open, except hold down the play/pause button. holding the button and with the fone facing upwards move your fone up or down to increase/decrease the volume :)

The W980 is one of the best gadget for music it's clear bass gives best quality sound. 'vibrator' is not so strong as it should be. front screen is easily scrachable. when dial a number it takes few seconds to dial.

SE state in an e-mail, we can not use it and no way around. Mine had the transmitter working but after software update it even is gone out the phone menu. My opinion using the FM transmitter s sales tool and than take it away id not correct from SE. Anyhow, complains will not help....it is gone

it depends on yr nation. Or u can flash firmware(FW) which has Fm tran... I think original (before u update) still has Fm trans... U can search on google to flash FW back on original.

Hi Mr. Khan, While playing the music, you need to press the small walkman key (small key with walkman logo - just above key 1) and shake. PRESS WALKMAN KEY AND SHAKE to change the song.

decent phone, average looks. walkman section works well. however, poor reliability, crashes at least twice a week, often if you recieve a call when using the phone for anything else. sound from walkman without headphones is very poor (i had the w810i before this, and it was much better) and when calling the sound can distort somewhat. overall opinion, not bad, but could have been so much better.

in term of sound quality, it's a little bit noise than SONY WALKMAN, seriously!! I've tested for one month. my battery last only about 1.5 days with few hours music playback daily. my initial charge was about 8 hours only. any recommendation? please help. and another thing is may be mine is fault one, coz the flip is ... i dn no how to call it in english, it's not fit well as the first day i bought. for me, build quality is 7/10 sorry!

Warning: Few days ago I posted an issue about missing the FM transmitter in my mobile after updating the software. SE send me an answer on my question about. They say as it was illegal in HK ( I bought the device in Hk and live in Europe) to use FM transmitter they removed it from the new Software version. I think this is complete illegal too. I bought this mobile special for the FM transmitter, when you connect the phone to your PC, SE tells you need an later software update, no word about the fact they removed functionallity out of the mobile. If they do not solve this, never SE anymore

This phone does take a while to start up, it takes its time going though the main menu when u turn it on, its easly sratched, when u use the internet it is slow finding a website & is slow going thought the said website, when u transfer or download media to ur phone-Eg Ipod libary it takes a while to transfer, it also switches from ur number being sent or being made private when u make a phone call): all up its crap i would not recommend to buy this phone, it would be better to wait for a better version to be put out...

Thanks for the advice, I'll try doing that now, let see if it works. I only had it for 10 days and I'm really dissapointed, by this problem. battery is not even good for 36 hours, I dissabled, bluetooth, voice commands and whatever that may seem a energy drainer. You should have recharged your battery for at least 16 hours for a couple of times. Mine lasts up to 5 days and that's on moderate use, cos that's what I did with my battery.

we cant configure clear stereo by ourself.. i think it has... but, it is already in every. eq package.. sound is very clear n nice.. even if u set the clear bass to the highest level n u hear music for 3 hours, u wont get headache. for sure.. h311 no man.. soooo smooth... no hang.. but, if u listen to music, n do messaging, it gets slow "a bit".. only a bit.. not a big problem..

fully recommended dude.. about restarting. i dont have any.. ive ben using it for about 6 month.. there is no single restart happen.. about the restarting thing, it depends on the handset that u have.. it is about luck. 8 gb is more than enough. i just use it at 5-6 gb.. performance is gud.. a bit lagging when listening to the music then u do texting. "a bit" very stylish. but u need to clean it many times to make it nice, if u dont do that, ur fone will look like an old fone.. :))

All i can say is build quality is POOR, screen part is os fragile. after 1 month usage, it's heard sound like cracking inside the screen part. if u guys look for good build quality, please dn even think ab this phone in mind. all good ab dis phone are sound quality, fm transmitter, and 8gb.

Not a great phone at all. The Camera position is dreadful. Once you open the phone and hold it in a normal manner your hand covers the lense.The buttons are too small and tightly packed in the menu D.feels very poor quality and "plasticky". Brought mine back in 2 days. oh not that easy to import music to either . changerd to Iphone and never looked back

i agree with "Wazza" coz i also have sony nwz-a816, and all i can say is they are 99% the same in term of audio quality. it produces clear sound!! much better than iPhone, more natural than nokia, ... but sth i dn like is video playback, hmmm just support 30fps but -> poor playback quality!! better forget ab video on w980 o! i forget mention ab the headsets, hpm-77 of W980 and MDR-EX082 of SONY WALKMAN produce almost the same sound. interesting!! LOVE IT SE: video playback needed improved :D

I have done lots of battery tests throughtout gsmarena forum..At moment using n85 as well as this w980,,n85 will do 30 hrs music and 6.5hrs video before going to emergency mode..Thats the best i have seen on a mobile BUT start with 3g and using bbci-player on wi-fi and it drops like mad perhaps flat in 3hrs 30 minutes..I reckon that all top mobile fone batterys over past 6 yrs are drained under high power use in 3hrs to 5 hrs so only video and music have increased using better tech,,even gaming cripples most fones after a few hrs playing..Do you want to know the worst fone battery,,well it goes to moto v3x,,i flattened that using 3 network watching tele on full brightness in 47 minutes..Even at normal use moto are pretty poor and s/e are usually best..The best fone battery goes to lgu8360 which gave 12.5hrs plus of full screen video playback i fell asleep at 12.5hrs mark..So battery has to be taken with small pinch of salt after my fave samsung d600 was dead after 3hrs 50 minutes of 90% volume mp3 playing yet has 7 hr talktime,,only real life reports are cricial..

I have been a lot heavier on this fone today and its down to 24% and i took it off charge at 8am this morning.I expect it to be flat later on so its lasted 16-17 hrs under fairly heavy usage..I reckon using 3g and increase the britness you could flatten it in 6 hrs..

If you go to the se/ apps on your handset you can get this and they work.. A light saber that swooshes round as you swing the fone for trekky people.. A spirit level called water level and it works accuratly with built in accelarometer,, Their is a gps app to attach your w980 to and external gps module,, Tracker app wich you enter you height calories etc it like an excerscise app that works via gps module,, Vtap dont know what it does but its free,, I have already got,,walkmate,,world 3d clock ,,accuweather,,converter,,music mate 5,, Just install opera mini,,yahoo go !fring and shozu and your almost up to smartfone functions.. With 2g set 70% screen briteness i get 3 days of moderate use.. Camera gives reasonable snaps that are quite clear to me and video is smooth and not as pixellated as k850i.. Also in entertainment you have games track id and Location services were google maps is with settings for my favourites,,status info,,log and settings..The usual remote control and record sound is here too..and a demo tour video.. Another thing to mention is that at bottom of media player in settings is media update wich sorts and updates media and should be done when any media is added so it is easy recognised by w980.. This fone should put me on till w995 comes out..

I got this friday and compared to 8gb in my k770 this much more capable as its designed with the 8gb from start..Music is great with more controlled bass and its a fresh departure from what ive been using for yrs,,i love clsamshells.Up to now its fine and video is not bad compared to p990i which was lastse i had with 30fps qvga resolution..Just playing about with it at moment getting used to it,,i need to get opera mini and such on board and see if yahoo 3 works..

Can somebody please answer these 2 questions, really would appreciate: 1) Can this phone be locked with a password to prevent ppl from playing around with your phone and checking your messages, as an example? i'm not talking about the phone lock whne you restart the phone which appears after one enters your SIM PIN. The Clear Bass and Clear Stereo performance was so much better than IPOD....:). As a tips, its better if you can do your own arrangement for the equalizer and don't use the Stereo Widening. The BASS power will immediately take an aggresive effect.

If u have mobile tracker in your phone then EMI no. is a resourceful thing. if someone stole your phone; its a problem but no worries there. As soon as he or someone inserts a new sim in your cell phone then from that new inserted sim a msg will be sent to ur alternative(which u will fill during installation of the mobile tracker software) cellphone no. without knowing the new inserted sim's owner and then your will be tracked and u will get to know where it is. Sorry, u have to talk to the sony ericsson customer care for the TRACKER. They can tell more clearly.

go to multimedia folder and switch any flash file for the ones there but mind that there's only the radio and the player disp files, the main external disp file must be somewhere else

I once got that Yellow warning triangle on my P800, I looked it up in the Z600 and it said that it means that the network doesn't support call cyphering... a week later it was gone. On my phone it appears 10 seconds into any call; either made or received.

i also used to face low battery life with my w980, but i got it fixed , update your firmware to the latest availiable . then let the battery drain to zero and then recharge the battery again. it has worked for me and is giving a backup of atleast 4 days. and regarding nokia giving great backup. lolz to it. nokia doesnt give the sound clarity and the sound which a sony erricsson gives. the camera of any nokia phone bites dust compared to any sony phones(although this set doesnt have a great cam). Nokia's camera's although using Carl zeiss len's still stand nowhere to a non carl zeiss lensed sony phone camera. And any sony phone which uses Carl zeiss lenses outperforms nokia.

Therefore, my new w980 has been left in the box untouched till now since 2 saturdays ago. Despite having about 5 handsets in 10 years, this has got to be the most easiest to operate - it is functional, easy to navigate and not over the top. I'm a technical and functional nut & this is just perfect. Despite all the negative feedback, I really dont know what people look for these days in cell phones but this handset is controllable and definitely won't control me.

It should have voice command. In Contact menu higlight the Contact name then click Option, Edit Contact, and you can find add voice command menu from available menu options.

Music-wise it truly rocks your shoes off. I use the HPM 980 BT headset with it and when i go back to my K800 I really can hear the difference. When it comes to storage...well 8gb of music is for me, very hard to fill. I think the hysteria of memory size is starting to end. I mean, who wants to scroll through 8-16GB music anyways? I have like 2000 songs on my phone and I really don't know what more to fill it with. But hey thats perhaps only me :)

The glossy black surface can be easily scratched... but its still elegant! thus i bought a plastic case to protect this phone :) and i realise, even though in the review its said that the phone cannot multi-task when sending files via bluetooth, but i realise otherwise. the camera does not have a flash also it doesnt have zoom. only on VGA. the gesture control is only for the music. hold ur finger on the play button on front and flick. track changes and volume. that said Buy the phone

positives-great internal space, sound quality. great design. all round my favorite phone ever but it does have its flaws- camera- WILL NOT ZOOM ON ANY SETTING BUT VGA which is annoying. the phone can creak a little bit and tends to lag a tiny bit. other than that i love this phone

I bought this phone 2 weeks ago. Its performance did not let me down. It does not lag also. The walkman-on-top is perfect, with no lag while playing tracks. There is vibration on those touch buttons when pressed,making tracks-choosing easy and effortless. The music quality is good, and with headphones on, the music is clear and nice. However, rock musics are not as nice when listenned on headphones, which is quite disappointing. The headphones must also be connected to an adaptor which i find it troublesome and unglem. Next, the camera is fast, does not take pictures too slowly. However the pictures are generally big in size if taken in 3MP. There is also no flash no autofocus. But i am still happy with the picture quality. The other features like 8Gb of memory is wonderful, allowing me to put in many games and music as i like, without worrying for the space. Its abundant space is good. The colour display is great too. The light that flashes along with the music is also cool and wonderful. The loudness of the phone is good enough, the battery is also acceptable, its not bad. Overall, i would give the phone 8/10. :) Score loss at the camera and some small errors that will occur which require the phone to be switched off n on again to recover.

once ur connected to internet and if u want to exit from it, this is wht u should do. select options, and then select exit browser. thats it. u dont have to select the keypad (end call). hope this wil help u.

as long as you always take picture not less than 50cm distance from the object and not in the dark light the camera should be good.

I just got this phone yesterday, i am pleased with it. The music quality is as good as presumed, colour is also beautiful. It's lightweight and the music-on-top does not lag much. Its a great phone! But i have little complaints. The media manager does not allow me to organise tracks uploaded easily...and there are little errors here n there... but well, its still good. I highly recommend this phone for music-lovers!!! and of cus, clam-shell lovers!!

Also using non animated themes or wallpapers etc can save battery.turn off cell broadcast and area info,turn off bluetooth when not used,,...s/e are renowned for their battery strength and i considered this as i love flip fones but have gone for xperia..The xperias battery times seem over exaggerated with under heavy use justs lasy the day but my k770i with 10 hr talktime lasts 4 days under moderate use..Losing faith in specs of most fones they need to get stuff correct,, the w980 is a music fone so it should give a good days music playing with some fone calls and texts surly!!!

Sorry.. I forgot w980 doesn't support memory card. So try to master reset the phone and do not make your storage too full.

It's up to the song's bitrate: try no stereo widening for better bass with over a 160 Kbps song,,eg: i used them on anime genre songs n it's awesome.stereo widening works well on phone's speaker

The camera is very good, the pics comes out nice n with good clarity but you have to make sure your hand/camera is very still or else the pic comes out shaky. auto focus n flash are the only important things missing from this phone. Sound is quality is good with nice bass. I didnt find any negatives with this phone. the phone is prone to have finger prints because of the piano black finish. Some of the applications are a little hard to find out in the beginning but once you get used its easy. havnt found too many softwares for this model but tons of wallpapers, themes n screensavers are available on the net. got this phone abt 2 months ago for rupees 22k from mulund. havnt seen this phone at any store or with anyone so happy abt the purchase though it was pricey. Overall an excellent phone. My earlier one was SE P910i.
