Well, first time posting here. My smartphone venture started with the Xperia Ray, great little device sadly capabilities were very slow. SX was a breath of fresh air, I have been using the SX since it's release in 2012 and I have to say it's been a very reliable phone and it still is. Fast forward 6 years to present, I'm finally retiring it in favor of probably the last truly compact flagship phone the Xperia XZ1 Compact, had Sony kept releasing the compact series the way it was i would have probably waited a bit longer. The SX and I had a very good run.

1 year since my last comment, and I was the last person to comment here. One my last trip to Japan I noticed a lady still using this phone. The phone is still actually usable in 2017, though app compatibility is getting worse for android 4.1.

This era of this phone is coming to an end. While the size and convience, and superior one handed use will never go out of date - the battery, camera and android version are pushing this phone to irrelavancy. Modern apps which can still run on Android 4.1 are getting heavier - and while they still run ok - they drain the battery faster than ever. While the phone is definitly not dead yet. I think its probably in its last year of usefulness now. Though carefull planning, rooting, selective app use , maybe longer.

You can root it, no problem - just need to use a bit of google translate on some japanese sites, and you should find the download link for the rootkit fairly easily. Cyanogenmod is not possible - though Android 4.1 is not bad, still very usable and compatible in 2015/2016

Amazingly small and light, but still packs enough punch to be useable even today. It's a shame the smartphone industry seems to be running in the complete opposite direction, with oversized, heavy phablets dominating the top end, and cheap junk with garbage specs populating the lower end.

Its funny that after 3years this is still the best small phone you can buy with decent specs, only the iphone4/5 come close but they are still bigger and heavier. I'm still using this as my daily driver. i tried a Z1 compact to replace this, but it feels giant compared to the SX. Battery life on the SX is pretty bad and you really have to modify the stock Android os with rooting and exposed framework to make it run smooth, but its worth it.

Yes it works in Germany; but it needs to be unlocked by Docomo. Data is limited to 3G since it only has antennas for the Japanese LTE band. AFAIK there is no update available aside from the Docomo ROMs (Android 4.1.2). Upside: the phone is still reasonably fast. Been using it for >1 year as DD, I still like it.

Latest version of support is 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) Back cover pops open for access to battery/sd card/simcard. Battery is the Sony BA700 can find lots of them on Amazon/Ebay. 1.5 years using this little gem and still quick and better spec wise than average phones out there. I have got the sx, its the perfect size, and light. Wish more phones where this size. Its a fast and with 850Mb of user ram, so its good enough to use as a daily driver. The screen is very sharp with good color reproduction. Only issue is the cpu drains the battery when its at 100% load, you can get around this with rooting. Its a discontinued product with the Z1f replacing it, but Z1f is as big as a galaxy s2, 127mm x 64.9mm x 9.4mm, so its not small.

They did something similar with a w995 style slide phone in the past! It had a 1ghz processor and 12mp camera! The best slider we had was w995 while japan got this beast! Don't worry mate if you check Xperia blog there's evidence from NTT DoCoMo that Sony are releasing a mini version of the Z1 just search it up it's called the Sony Xperia Z1f. It really does depend on what you mean by a little gaming. I do not recommend this phone for the battery Life. Its simply awful. Bluetooth is useless as won't last more than 4 h on full charge. Camera is too narrow angle. Else no complaints, but please be warned, battery is extremely poor for daily use unless voice calls. I've had this phone for 4 months now

I have been using this phone for the last 6 months. It's ultra light, beautiful, and fast. Only problem -- the battery life is absolutely appalling. With heavy app use, battery life on this phone can be as low as 2 hours after a full charge. Abysmal. I would love it if companies could release more small/ light phone models which are also highly specced. More competition in this category would probably result in better performing devices for consumers. Right now the lighter weight phones are relegated to the budget end of the market, which is a shame.

Has anyone out there owned and used the SX SO-05D on a 3G900 (UMTS BAND 8)?? Is the phone capable of picking up 3G900? Specifications for Docomo can be quite confusing. I have already used an unlocked Docomo phone on the 3G900 band even though all online specifications said nothing of the sort. Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Please only reply if you have on hand experience.

Great phone. But is camera is really really bad. The field of view is also really narrow. So you have to stand really far back to get everything in the photo. Video has the same problem, and also an extremely slow auto-focus.. the camera is always hunting for the correct focus and rarely gets it right. Other than the camera/video. Its a super company small and light phone with fast browsing, fast apps, etc.

I purchased one from ebay (guy from japan, he fully unlocks the phone by going to the provider and doing hardware lock and then sets the language to english before shipping to you) and this is EXACTLY what I wanted, I been using my iPhone 3GS for over 3 years now and it was pretty beat up so I decided to look for a new phone. Got the phone. Everything is great,small,fast, powerful, good battery, light. BUT the Camera absolutely sucks. Only 6MP when shooting in 16x9, and the field of view is extremely narrow. Everything is super close, camera feels like its always zoomed in when its not. Night shots are always awful, day time shots is hit and miss, washed out colours, noise, etc. The auto-focus gets it often gets everything wrong. If camera is not important to you, then its still a good phone.

Ordered this from Japan, for use in europe, and has been using it for 5 months now. Just love it! Perfect size/weight. Came with loads of useless bloatware from original Japanese telco provider Docomo, that was hard to remove. Have it rooted, and removed everything i do not need, and is now getting extremely good batterylife, 2-3 days including 2-3 hours of callng each day, with 60% screen brightness. With brightness at 100% it works in the sun, but that also drains the battery. 60% works in almost all environments. I am missing being able to use LTE, as it only supports Japanese standards, not EU. Not all headset works well with this device. Great sound with all headset, but microphone only works well with one of my four headset. General performance is top. I have 89 apps installed, and lots of them doing sync, but its always responsive, and newer frezess. Only experienced it crashing with my company's internal SoftPhone. Everything else just runs smoothly. ThMoJe

In fact, I think these specs are so great that I keep holding on buying a new phone until something comparably decent shows up in my country.... and with me many other people I assure you. I must say, I got this phone without thinking at all (could afford it!). I got it from osoblanco-jp. Excellent communication and rapid delivery - arrived within 2 weeks from Japan, so not much to complain about. I was looking for a one handed, lightweight phone with all the benifits of an android phone. For me, the handset is perfect, almost. It does not come with a charger (this is how sony is selling it - its not due to the ebay seller). The other problem is that the screen is extremly fingerprint friendly - much more so than other phones Ive used... i.e. galaxy note and galaxy s 1. Why is this, no idea - maybe its easier to notice because the screen is not OLED. Also, note, if you decide to get this, it needs a micro sim - not a Nano sim as is the case for iphones. Am I happy - yes. This is a phone that should last me well over 2-3 years finally. A phone that is light, practical and easy to use. If anyone wants a detailed website review, ask - also ask if there is any specific features you want me to test.

It is not difficult to find a 'slim' phone, but what matters is making it light having around 100g and also around 3.8" display which makes the phone narrower, making one handed operation easy, and also comfortable in your pocket. This phone has this ideal size with high end specs also.

The fist time I used the phone finder this phone was the only result. I'd like to be able to have it too. It's just not fair it's not available worldwide. It has everything a reasonable person would like from an Android phone - small size, lightweight, decent resolution, fast processor, enough RAM, card slot, image stabilization... I completely agree with Techno. I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray which is a beautiful little handset. Much better, quality-wise, then the rest of the current Xperia range in the UK. I wanted to upgrade this to a Qhd display and dual core as it struggles with .mkv files. Then I came across this little beauty (doing a GSM Arena search) and it ticks all the boxes. But it won't come out in Europe! Instead we get the Xperia Z which I was not impressed by (the display is quite poor). Where are all the high-specced small phones for those of us that don't want to carry a brick around???? Oh, and Sony et. al. a lot of us *want* to be able to swap the battery out and add memory cards. I avoid phones where you *can't* do this.

I have now had this phone for a couple of months, and is 100% satisfied. I do not like big heavy phones, but want to be able to do the same thing. With just under 100 grams and size 115 x 54 x 9.4 mm, it is the phone that comes closest to the 1-5-10-100-500 (D-W-H-Weight-Standby hours)specifications that we were use to expect from phones back in the 90's, OK it only has half the standby time, but i talk several hours each day, and has only once in three months ran out of juice.

Switched from Samsung Toco to Sony Ray. Loved the major upgrade. Now looking at my next phone and expected more than this SX. The Ray is clean and sleek. Minimum labeling, thin width and thickness. The SX is not this way. What is with all the tags on the front, color engraved lines, and multi color front. I get asked questions about the Ray all the time from big phone users. Small size, one hand open, and sleek look has switched some.

iPhone 5 is a 4" device, Galaxy S3 is a 4.8" device. Other than that they are both high end in their class, they are totally different. If Sony is going to release something to compete both, they need two separate devices: The SX (or something similar) to compete in the small/light category against the iPhone (and I would have bought it immediately if it were available for a reasonable price, not the ~750euro it would cost me now), and something like the current Xperia T/TX to compete against the S3 in the 4.5"+ category. And you could say that already the T/TX is competing against the S3.

I read sony is planning to release soon a direct competitor to the samsung galaxy3 and the iPhone5. This phone already exists (xperia SX), sadly only for Japan. I think the pricing giving by gsmarena is wrong. It can be bought for 800USD not 450USD. Sure there are sony phones with slightly higher specs but due the size this device really deserves to be called a cellphone.

I'm currently using it on Rogers' network in Calgary. You will have to manually set up the APN for 3G/MMS though (very easy). Everything will work, except for the Docomo apps. I totally recommend Kyoex! 100% real deal and one of the best online sites I've ever encountered. Check out his ebay reviews if you have doubts. He's very open to negotiation so just ask for a discount.I just recently ordered a 2nd SX for my GF too.

Pretty sure the screen is not scratch resistance (definitely not going to test that either). The phone does come with a screen protector preinstalled. Yes, it has radio and fully functional in Canada. Yes, it has multitouch (more fingers than you'll ever need). For everything else refer to the specs sheet from GSM. Cheers!

I bought my phone from here, Since they didn't have my phone in the Sony Store and we can't buy from DoCoMo unless you a DoCoMo plan ID. Give Kyoex a shot, just ask for the phone you want, even if it's not listed yet. They have amazing customer service they will unlock and do everything for you. You can confirm whether it'll work with Telus with them too. The ugly DoCoMo logo will be on there, unfortunately. Cheers

Your phone will work in Canada if it's under the World Wing category with DoCoMo. I believe it is, so I'm pretty sure it'll work. It won't hurt to confirm with the store first though. From my experience, everything worked including the Marketplace. Things that didn't work includes the radio, mobile wallet and the random extra apps from DoCoMo (nothing special). Other than that, the phone runs like your typical android.

By the way, one final comment. I say it's the perfect phone only because bluetooth 4 currently available (as of octorber30 2012) still isn't working properly on most phones its offered in. (which are mostly samsung phones). They are having serious issues with the Bluetooth LE DualMode features available on the S3 and i would bet that the same issues are on the Note2 as well. Once bluetooth 5 is out and those issues in the next upcoming phones are fixed then my opinion on the best phone out might change depending on overall design. Still this is the only android phone out with good enough looks and has infrared. If you have the money (700+ USD) in my humble opinion this is the phone to get.

This would be the perfect phone if it had a barometer. This phone basically has everything except for POGO docking which i could live without because of touchstone mods. Bar+IRDA = *rough temperature readings*. & Bar = altitude = +1 position assist = *faster gps lock*. & BAR = pressure reading = rain warnings. & There are more i'm not going to go into. (You get the idea) It is amazing what the lack of a single sensor can make or break a phone.

in the phone cant you disable some of the running backround apps that are usually running for no reason, i have the sony arc and there was so many backround apps running that drained my battery so i disabled them but when i disabled them they dissapear from my homescreen ... ?

The same thing happened with my xperia x10 mini pro, the true was that the battery was killed not by the apps, but by specific apps updatating process, that worked in background and i couldn't neither see nor stop them... If in 2-4 days the problem disappear post it...

I have this phone and baught it mainly for the design and weight. I really like smaller smartphones. It is pretty easy to use but they really lie on the battery. I believe this is mainly because of apps running in the background and "advanced task killer" app don't seem to kill them so they are always running and killing the battery. If anybody has tip/app to make the battery better, please let me know cheers

I want this badboy so bad. I have been wating to get a smart phone, as i don´t really need one. My "old" SE zylo still treats me well. The SX has the best phone design I my opinion, only second to the iphone 5. My guess is, that sony is afraid to release this to the rest of the world because it´s very similar in design to the iphone5. For me this is the ideal size and spec. It´s sad that well speced phones usually have 4,3 inch or higher displays. That is such a plus point in the sx. Power, quality, in a compact size. DO want!!

My wife has this phone. Got it 2 days ago and she likes it a lot. It has many languages installed by default so you can use it. But does it support your network? The battery is removable. Did some research, but was wondering if Docomo's World Wing specification implies that this phone has support for 3G CLR (850Mhz) frequencies... 54 mm wide only at 3.7" screen? Probably the most compact smartphone to date.. Even more compact than my iphone 4s w/c is 58.6 mm wide at 3.5" screen. The reason I bought iphone 4s among other high-end flagships is because its the only one w/c fits friendly right into my pocket and works smoothly w/ single-handed operation. But i guess SX would be a nice option to consider now... I really hate bulky phones. Many will offer high-end specs...but only few can still manage to fit a good technology in a compact hardware. Iphone 4s and xperia sx are worth mentioning.

i think if they could fit in 1800 mAh battery in it somehow, this phone will be a monster and will be unbeaten for sometime. 1800mAh would add may be extra 10 gms to it but at 105gms it still will be featherweight but its back power will be enhanced manifolds..... Sony please see if you could incorporate the same in this. As an standard these days, at least 1800mAh should be used as 1500mAh does not have the strength to justify the power of resource hungry smartphones. These are not that much monstrous in dimension as compared to 1500 mAh and could be adjusted in the slimmer bodies with little bit of modifications

I've been an Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray user for quite some time. I love it, and I still love it. This one would be a good upgrade from Ray. Having more grunt behind CPU and RAM. But I'm not sure I would spend the extra money just yet, as Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is serving me very nicely for the time being. Latest Ericcsion Xperia ranges, and now onto Sony Xperia, is definately looking good for me. My only concern is all Xperia ranges carry too similar design concept, making all phones look the same.

Bullshit mobile, I think I made a mistake by buying Xperia S because this mobile keeps on hanging inbetween and cannot even restart immediate, cannot remove the battery because it doesn't have battery and takes 4 to 5 hrs and sometimes more to work normally, I just buy d phone not even one month but hang for atlest 4to5 times till now, im fedup with this......
