No you don't have to if you want to stay stock & clean. But you need to flash twrp to root your phone with magisk.

That's where I buy mine. It's 6/128gb version. It's China phone but came with official global rom miui 10.3.2 version. Bootloader is unlocked, so I just flash twrp and rooted with magisk. Pop in TMobile (USA network) and got LTE with band 4. So far so good, battery life is amazing 12hrs sot easily. I still need to research more about anti roll back, so it's still on miui 10.3.2. I don't want to brick it early haha.

the max series was cancelled in 2018. there will be no more after this one. that's why everyone's pleading with xiaomi to continue lol. YTer frankie tech recently did a video on a rant on how they're not finishing it actually.

Yes there is a slight difference and you would notice it in heavy games, however the 5500 battery with 636 efficiency will give you more play time and less heat. Also I’ve heard that MIUI is more stable and smoother than EMUI (Huawei’s) with snapdragon SoC. So more or less it is the same. -Mi Max 3 owner here

I had mi max 2 and of course i bought mi max 3 because i loved the max series.I have the Chinese version and 2-3 weeks ago they update it to miui 11 .I am waiting for mi max 4 and am very disappointed that they still dont have a launch date.

Google signed agreement with EOMs to upgrade any phone that was manufactured with Android 8 to have 2 years upgrade. so that means we will have Android 10. The reason for Xiaomi stop mi max 4 is too many people bricked their mi max 3 because of stupid anti -rollback. Nobody buy it anymore they stay away from it. You can find mi max 3 online easily, there are tons of it.

this is like my third comment, but i can't help but show my frustration for this series. if it wasn't cancelled, there easily would have been 3 phones released by now. a max 3 pro, max 4/4 pro and max 5 possibly on the way for 2020. it really is the only one of its kind. there are no other budget phablet phones on the market like this. and if this series continued that means there would have been even more aggressive competition than the phone market already has. i would have liked to see what other companies would have done to catch up or even compare with the max series.

for real tho. it's clear that lots of people love this series, seeing as its had 3+ million hits. a bit more i'd add to the list is oled, slimmer bezels and a better looking back design, something in polycarbonate perhaps. prettier than plastic but heavier feel in the hand and just as durable (it probably won't be glass since it's still in budget range).

Have had mine since the release and have had no trouble. I went from a Samsung note 3 and mi max isa much better phone. So I bought my wife a xiaomi redmi note 6 and she has had no trouble with that either. I highly recommend and the pictures are perfect with mx camera.

I just don't trust Xiaomi. I installed 10.3.5.0 There are just giving ANY kind of food to "dogs" who just wanna eat anything. 3 days fulfillment. So, I don't know if I'm hallucinating, but Pubg was super fine on Erangel, HD, high FPS, no lag at all while parachuting before landing.... But Sanhok was a tiny bit laggy before at high, but now it seems two bits, so will have to put this one to balance, and high fps.... Also is the grain of graphics textures more coarse ? I mean in all games ? They only purpose us to make more money, no to increase performances, it might pass by lowering it. Subtully.... I'm afraid MIUI 11 with there battery saving means: buy from us, we're cheaper than Apple. And saving battery have nothing to do with Mi Max 3, and with performances.

Deep thoughts about updates: 1- stupid 2- mi max is too good for Xiaomi, they wanna sell more tablets and more small phones, mi max just lowing there sellings, that's why there's no mi max 4 ! I wanted to keep Oreo....guess what happened ? Anyways Pubg super good at HD high FPS on all maps, very fluid, Vicendy is more demanding so for that one only I put smooth or fluid, but High FPS. I play Warnings HD Textures, all at max, 60 fps. Maybe it's the Asphalt 9 game update that force me to go low graphics, because I've noticed the change before updating to August last MIUI update. Asphalt Xtreme High perfect, RR3 high etc.... So Gamers, when 11 comes out, and you have no fear :), please tell me about performances, Pubg settings etc... Thanks

I've owned this phone for almost a year and it's the best most feature complete phone I've ever owned. Perfect for me and my uses. It also runs PUBG at very decent specs (it looks perfectly fine and runs perfectly smooth at the recommended settings). I play PUBG for 2-3 hours barely gets slightly warm. Battery life is killer too.

I don't understand why in the battery life ranking the "Mi Max 3" has only got a score of 3 hours more than the "Asus Zenfone 6 ZS630KL". I have had both of them and the Xiaomi lasts much more than the Asus. The battery of the Asus phone was always depleting without a reason.

I bought 6/128gb China version from AliExpress for 200 euros (including shipping) and I live in Europe. It has bootloader unlocked from shop so I will install Xiaomi.eu rom instantly when I will get it. You should get china version for cheaper price and install Xiaomi.eu rom for it to make it better without any bloatware.

18:9 is perfect for dropping the phone, as are the newer x/y ratios. Notice how in time people tend to remember the awesome phones, such as the hd2, g2, i9300(granted it sucked for developers), redmi note 3(SD), galaxy s5, op1, op3, g3, etc. All of these phones have something in common - more features than Apple is worth in usd and a nice 16:9 screen ratio while still being fairly small in width and height. People don't want a borderless phone that they drop every 6 or so months, they want a phone that they can keep for a fairly long time and go to it as a back up if the phone they currently have breaks/gets stolen/sinks/gets lost/etc.

Don't worry about the new aspect ratio. All the phones have moved to it, and the Mi Max 3s size has increased so the view is still perfect. You'd almost think this is a 16:9 phone, by how much screen it packs.

Hi, I've been using my Mi Max 3 since May, so far so good! the MIUI was quick (Updated to the latest version MIUI 10.3.2), vivid screen, ample screen area for gaming, superb battery that easily lasts me two days. Lasted me 3 days plus with minimal usage. I'm using 4G, so far so good. I also love the aluminum body build, it doesn't feel cheap at all. Highly recommended budget phone. I would give it a rating of 9/10.

Android 9 update has a lot of bugs related to 4G mobile data. Push notifications for don't work unless you're on Wi-Fi and sometimes the Youtube App can't connect to the server, although browsing YouTube via an internet browser like Chrome works just fine. Wish I can roll back to Android 8 Oreo

My wife in China and myself here in the states both have Mi Max 3's. It's had 9 months of use and I wouldn't hesitate buying it again. It was a screaming good value costing about $270 at the time. I never worry about running out of juice anymore as it will easily go for two days of moderate use. No more $800-$1000 phones for me.

If you want a phone mainly for browsing and watch videos for hours without worrying about the battery,then the max 3 is for you, the redmi 7 has a smaller screen and mono speaker, but it has an excellent battery very close to max3, redmi 7 has a better camera, and faster processor, the max 3 is a phablet phone it is better to hold it in your hands before deciding.

4 ram 64 in. But 4 ram is Plenty enough since Pubg shurly don't go over 3 ram I guess. Go with thé max 4 if u wish. But thé 3 is perfect for me. The 3 would have to be low graphics for instance for Shadowgun légende, but i don't like that heavy game. But perfect for Pubg, asphalt 9(heavy) and Gaming in général because of screen. After that u don't whant smaller...

Surprisingly good. The screen is the thing. Poor image stabilization in video. Pictures look good. Performance good for the price. Bought mine as good spare and to delay upgrading. Very handy device with excellent battery life. Using it a lot on a hiking holiday, carrying it instead of a USB battery. I like the best and newest but this is the best value for money device I've ever bought.

Check Point says that Guard Provider uses several third-party Software Development Kits (SDKs), including three different antivirus brands built that the user can choose from to protect their phone: Avast, AVL and Tencent.  However, due to the unsecured nature of the network traffic to and from the Guard Provider app and the use of multiple SDKs within the same app, a threat actor could connect to the same Wi-Fi network as the victim and carry out a Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) attack to inject malicious code such as password stealing, ransomware, tracking or any other kind of malware, onto the device.  Check Point says that it notified Xiaomi of the threat immediately, and the vendor has now issued a patch for the flaw, but advises users to utilise mobile security software that is able to protect against such MiTM attacks. So far the only problem i experience with this MI MAX 3 is Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi keeps turning on and off or disconnecting itself. i turned of WI-FI assistant yo stop automatically connecting to networks but still having issues. Anyone experiencing this here?

Recommend backup to cloud or PC before update and restore factory settings after update to wipe any incompatible data files that can cause bugs and lags with the new update. Especially when updating to a newer android version like from oreo to pie.

Thé Mi Max 3 was able to handle Pubg with high frame rate and HD when it was on Oreo. But thé game, After pie update, don't reconised those setting. I've made a ticket to Pubg to correct that.

I've been using MiMax 3 for 3 months. Just got Android 9 update on March 15, 2019. I am very pleased with the phone. Every feature is running smoothly. Battery endurance is perfect. It lasts at least for 2 days, sometimes 3 full days, depending on the usage. Thanks Xiaomi, very well done phone.

Exactly one week using this wonderful phone. very smooth. everything works for me. i bought a tempered glass screen protector and it covers perfectly. The speaker and sound is heavy with good quality. i am using Nova launcher and it is perfect. my case cover is premium red and makes this phone look like $1000. Very impressed with my first Xiaomi product. i highly recommend this if you love big screen. Mine came out of the box with MIUI 10 so i did not do any upgrades. The battery works like a 5500mAh should last. no draining at all. global version 4GB/64GB. i have few Xiaomi apps but i don't care they are nit bothering me. I will never flash anything on this phone. it is perfect for me. people do all sirt if stuff to their phones and then they start complaining. Buy original global version you will be happy.

I do not share your opinion about the power of the Mi Max 3 at all, it is powerful and never weakens, it never heats either. As for the updates, there are regularly and there is no interest in receiving every 5 minutes. A reliable smartphone does not require permanent updates and the Mi Max 3 is clearly very reliable, there is no doubt about it.

Thats true, i also purchase Note 5 with seled box, and when i opened, near back camera, there is a spot, damage, on alu,metal near camera(s). Also there is a case (on youtube, unboxing). Redmi 5a, seled box, but no adapter in the box at all heh.. Xiaomi needs to improve little their quality, in those basic stuff. On the other hand, they have cheap phones, good phones, also MIUI 9 (and 10) is not bad for custom rom (better than EMUI).

Pros: - battery, all day use for work - 1 day, sporadically use - 4+ days - charging time - to 80% in about 1-1.5hours - big screen, I can edit documents easy - productivity: for my work use, and sporadically youtube, it's excellent. - IR that I can use with my TVs Cons: - When you hold it horizontally and one hand cover the top (where is the front camera and I suppose WIFi antenna) WiFi signal drops significantly. Overall: - big screen, it's 2 hands gadget. It has one hand feature witch can be helpful... someway.. - better in many aspects than a similar budget and even more expensive Samsung. - it doesn't fit very well in my pocket when I'm driving for example. Long battery life, excellent productivity for my work use and big screen.

no problem. just because you bought original doesn't mean you have a good working phone it could be factory defective product which a few others end up getting . just return it if its not too late. if you are in USA i advise you to buy from sellers on ebay USA so you can return very easily unlike china sellers very difficult. you will spend the amount of a new phone to return to China.

You should compare its battery life no other than itself. What it could be with its particular hardware setup etc. Just read this bit: I had an LG M320N (X Power2) before with a 4500mah battery, but with less energy consuming parts and I had quite a bit more battery life.

Yes, I had the same ROM. After updating to MIUI 10 all the issues were gone. (poor signal, droped calls, it took to much to call someone). Now there are no other visible issues to solve, there are some annoying commercial embedded into apps. (but even these can be disabled app by app)

The battery life could be (should be) WAAAAAY better with this gigantic pack! I suppose they need this much energy to moitor user's activity and private life for a longer period of time. Camera and sound are OK (not the best, but still OK). Stock google keyboard is a nightmare! Use GO or something better instead! No stock battery statistics (like in the LG phones). Maybe they don't want you to see how incredibly fast this product is loosing its huge amount of energy... Separated screen works well. Miui 10 looks good, but it's soo stupid. You can't see the real Android settings menu, just the extremely siiimple, kids version of it. I HATE THAT THEY TELL HOW I WANT TO USE MY OWN FU(KING PHONE. Apparently there is some security issue in MIUI 10, because when my phone is on the lock screen every one can access to quick setting(Notification Shade) and change my Mobile Data Connection, put my phone in to Airplane Mode, turn on and off Bluetooth, even can see list of My Bluetooth Device and easily pick which one he or she wanted to be connected or dis connected! and the list goes on...Yeah THANK YOU Xiaomi !!! seriously why you did removed the setting option??? any thought??? All Fuss about find my device by Xiaomi and Google and even by the smart bands would be no use when my phone got stolen thanks to this problem.

I used Huawei MediaPad X2 before and just bought the blue version (global version) of Max3. Battery life is excellent, can last for 3 days (well I don't play games, use the Max 3 for surfing web, reading books, YouTube, GPS Map for driving). Camera is excellent in day time, but bad in low light. My friend bought the black one with (chinese version) and it comes with "enhanced low light photos" option - which is not available in global version of Max 3. I hope Xiaomi can add this missing feature to global version of Max 3 then it will be perfect.

Hello, Jumped to max 3 from Max 2 a few days ago and its a reasonable device with MIUI 10 using both sims, only problem with MIUI 10 is notification shade can't be disable on lock screen and phone is not safe, battery is bigger but life is a little shorter than Max 2 but still good no issues so far.

yes, checked here: it is unmodified and global version, I guess people don't notice these details anymore but I expected the professional reviewers to mention such a things! And forget about the numbers, Mi max 3 display also looks dimmer compare to original Mi Max at maximum brightness. (I did updated my device using the automatic update before all this and it is running on android 8.1.0)

I bought this phone for 280 euro a month ago (official global rom). I was looking for a dual-sim phone. After some research I decided to go for Max3. No regrets. The battery in this phone is unbelievable. I have two sim cards in, spend hours talking on the phone through Bluetooth in my car and get a lot of texts and emails daily. On the top of that I use the phone for navigation, 4-6 hours a day. When I'm back home from work, I still have 50-60% of battery left. All of that for a mere 280 euro... This phone is one of my best purchases. I love it.

let's start by saying I am a big Xiaomi fan and also coming from original Mi Max. Here are my thoughts: 1.The display quality Sucks even when compared with the original Mi Max which wasn't perfect! it is red tinted(even when the color temperature set to cool) and OH MY GOD what are these diagonal line which you can see if concentrate enough on display from a close distance?!! What is this Xiaomi? really disappointed! I read several reviews and tons of comments and nobody pointed this out!!! common people! I wonder why GSMArena didn't included the microscopic shot of the display... 2. the speakers Although they are somehow stereo(not sure though) there is not a notable improvement so don't expect that! and if you are coming from a Mi Max 2, you would be very disappointed! 3.the camera is improved well both front and rear ones. 4.battery life is very good as expected. 5.overall performance is smooth as expected. 6.built quality is better than the original Mi Max but I think Mi Max 2 was better specially where the screen is jointed to the body it was all smooth and flat but in Mi Max 3 like original Mi Max it has a bump there which is not nice at all.

I think Xiaomi is in no mood to launch Mi Max3 India bcuz more than three months passed since its China launch and Global launch in few countries but there is no sign or indications it will be launched in India. If this is true then this is a very bad move by Xiaomi which had earlier launched its predecessors Mi Max and Mi Max2 which were popular in India. I had mi max 3 for a short time, i got my money back cause of a fake rom. But really a nice phone indeed. Then i bought Honor note 10 and Honor 8X max instead, note 10 is clearly the best of them (no doubt) and with a lot higher price for sure. But for no. 2 i have honor 8X max and its even more cheap then the mi max 3, amazing phones for small money, I'll never buy a top range phone again for sure.

Well, "obsessed" is a tough word....Let's say I am concerned. I agree with you that there are plenty of things potentially harmful in the world we are living...we can't avoid it, except living in the middle of Greenland out of everything. But my view is that you can have an impact on limiting the exposure to what is a potential danger for health. It is the same with everything (food, drink, etc...). My way of thinking is that you can reduce the risk: a little amont of many things will be, in total, far from a huge amount of many things. Then it's up to each one of us to decide what to do. For sure I don't say that people who buy it are unconsicous, I never judge people. But as I care about the size of the screen, I care the same about the SAR value... Firstly, let me just say that this is the first 'Phablet' style phone I've owned ... therefore I don't have another phablet phone experience to compare it too directly. However, I've owned an iPhone 6s Plus and a Galaxy Note in the past, although neither quite a phablet and both with somewhat older technology in those units. So, my impressions of the Max 3 ... it's big, really big. And I've got to say that, despite it's size, it feels great in the hand and isn't clunky or awkward to get a decent grip on. I've not got overly large hands for a tall man, yet the fingerprint sensor is within easy reach with my index finger. The buttons are in the right, usual places on the side and the power button can also be assigned to take screenshots via a double-tap in the settings. I live in the UK and bought my Max via eGlobal UK ... They sent me the 'Global' version, so I didn't have to waste any time faffing about with removing various apps aimed at the Chinese market. I secured the phone at budget-friendly £200 and the most important thing I have to express to everyone reading this post is that the phone's performance far from budget level performance ! The phone is fast, very fast in real-world everyday tasks. I did a side-by-side comparison against an iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy s8+. I checked how quickly the Max 3 opened YouTube, Facebook, Whatsapp, Chrome, Firefox, Instagram and in all case the Max opened them way ahead of the other two phones. On average, the Max opened all in around or just under one second, with the other two taking between 2 to 5 seconds. Granted the phones compared against, aren't the very latest flagship models from either Apple or Samsung ( the iPhone X and Samsung S9 holding those titles currently ), but it wasn't very long ago that the models used here were at the top of their respective branded trees. I also accept that a couple of seconds difference when opening apps is hardly a matter for consternation, but the fact that the Max is so quick in this regard does add to the overall perception of a very smooth, spritely and sleek device. I have the 64gb version with 4gb of memory and, baring in mind that the Max has a mid-range Snapdragon 636 beating away at the heart of it, I am quite literally amazed at how swift it is with the types of everyday tasks I use my phones for ... It just does everything without any fuss and does it promptly in the way you want and hope for. The picture quality is surprisingly good, easily matching anything I've seen from a Samsung Galaxy 8 and the phone takes excellent 4K video if you download 'Open Camera' from Playstore and use that over the stock camera on the unit. To be fair, I don't do a huge amount of filiming or picture-taking with my phones, so I don't go too deeply into the more professional-orientated capabilities of the stated phone. I'm more interested in the point-and-shoot standard results that most everyday users would want from a phone and in this sense, I'm very happy with the results I get without too much effort. I've been using the Max 3 for a few weeks now and I can honestly say, it is not just a great phablet, but one of the best phones I've ever used, full stop ! For the ludicrisly cheap price of £200, you'll have a phone that can in many ways better a lot of top models from some very well known manufacturers overly the last 14 months. Ok, it won't beat an iPhone X or a Samsung S9 in certain areas, but you are paying but a quarter of the price for the Max 3 that you'd pay out for those leading models. I would defy anybody to use the Max 3 for a period and not come back with a generally glowing report about it ! My advice : go and treat yourself to a Max 3 and save enough money to pay pretty much outright for decent holiday !!

Love this phone. Last weekend mi max 3 got the new MiUi 10.0.1.0. global update and it makes everything work better, smoother and faster. Full screen with gestures gives you hell-of a lot of space to work with. Battery life and screen where the reasons why I chose max 3, due to having to use the phone extensively for work while on the road. I do not use the phone for gaming but any racing game seems to work fine. Camera is adequate it takes fine pictures.

I have bought a global version of this phone online way back August which at that time was not yet officially available here in the Philippines. Before purchasing it I fully understood that it's not an official global ROM and that I will not receive OTA updates, but few days ago, I received an OTA update to MIUI global 9 stable 9.6.6.0 OEDMIFD then later on the same day an update to MIUI global 10 stable 10.0.1.0 OEDMIFH. I'm just kinda puzzled how did that happen

There is an easy solution for this. Just go to mi.com. Click verify phone. Enter your phone serial number. It will show whether the phone is international version or not. I checked my global version and it's ok.

Bought the global version yesterday from Dhaka. In the box global version is written. 4/64 version, price was 275$. The MIUI was 9.6 Global Stable. So far, the experience is very good. The battery is at 84% after using from morning 10 to afternoon 5. I used around 2 hours of calling, youtube and browsing. Unbelievable. Got a decent screen protector and case too. I must say this is a perfect device for rough use, media consumption. Even I found NETFLIX app in the play store which was not available in earlier Xiaomi phones due to certificate issues. The 4G/3G signal reception and wifi reception is even better than my iPhone 8 plus.

There is a global version out now as printed on the side of the Mi Max box. I just got one from Gearbest that is factory sealed and printed as the Global Version. There is nothing wrong with getting an Ebay option either. I see a lot of complaints on the jerry rigged Global Roms as installed by the individual vendors on AliExpress and other shops. Many Ebay vendors are selling the fake Global Rom also so buyer beware.

It depends on the part of USA you are located and if it is rural, city, urban your network will reflect the coverage. i currently use Lycamobile usa which uses Tmobile and i live in suburb with very full coverage. But i am switching To H2O that uses AT&T that supports Band 4 and 5 on mi max 3. You may also have rushed to buy the chinese version that were flashed with some so called global ROM. Thats why i am waiting for official launch and i will buy from ebay USA..Cyber monday hopefully. if i have issues i can return smoothly not difficult chinese sellers.

The global version that I have in US has no advertising. Mine is model M1804E4A. T-Mobile band 4 is the only coverage I get and it's very weak. The only other coverage I get with T-Mobile in my rural area is EDGE and I can't even make a phone call with that, but when I get 4G sporadically it's fast. Otherwise, I like it better than my Samsung Note 9 because of the size and UI.

I got the 6/128GB version on tuesday. It had the latest xiaomi.eu ROM preinstalled so I was spared dealing with all that fake global ROM crapware. So far haven't noticed any bugs. The sound quality over 3.5mm jack is really good! The output is actually better on this one than on LG G3, which I honestly didn't expect. This is a great device for music listening, if you dont mind the size & weight (it's heavy!).

Hello guys, I'm seriously thinking about getting this phone. I love really big screen smartphones and my current 5.6" screen phone it's just not enough. Can someone tell me their experience with this phone? On paper that screen and battery size looks incredible, I would most likely use this as my daily driver. Mostly true yes, still depends how much chinese stuff there is on the phone we cant delete. But the chinese global rom is perfect for me living in EU, no chinese apps or other things i cant delete... I was really surprised of this (y). I order the Honor Note 10 and Honor 8X max today to, im curious to see if its the same, but heard in here there is some apps on the Note 10, not many, and thats okay for me to... they dont hurt me i guees :-D The good thing with these huge phaplets is they are cheap, so i can buy 3 phones, and still its more cheap then buying a Samsung or Apple top models, that i like. Nearly all smartphones nowadays having really good specs, so we all can survive even a so called slow phone today. My first priority because of that is a huge display and a usb c and thats it. I know the 8X max have the stoneage micro usb, but because of the big displsy i just try it anyway and have order 5 pcs tiny micro usb/usb c converter i will use on all my usb c charger cables as we both use here. Even my 2 years old asus zenfone 3 ultra phone use the usb c.

I have them both and this here i write with my Zenfone 3 ultra :-D. To be hornest i really dont like the 18:9, 19:9 etc. formats, but 16:9 i really love and misses on the 2018 phones. In my opinion the ultra is still a powerfull phone, even its over 2 years old now. The main reason and really the only one actually, is because of the lack of security updates im scarred of. Could hope Asus one day will make a Zenfone 6 ultra and in the 16:9 format or if in the 18:9 format i dream of 7,4 or 7,6 inch display and without the front camera i never use for anything... but hey, im still dreaming. Following the coming Honor 8X to, the say it will come out the 5th september. Btw con grats with your new beast, its really is.

Well... ex user of Mi Max Prime and Max 2 here. The camera quality of Mi Max 3 is better than Max 2, and Max 2 camera is better than Max Prime. It got the AI function (although it available only on MIUI 10 beta atm), same as RN 5 AI. The dual lense make a good portrait mode. Plus the battery is insanely big, and the SD 636 is powerful and yet very efficient in consuming power. Tested by playing PUBG on HD & High graphic setting. The only downfall is the ROM. No global ROM at the moment. Only chinese and Xiaomi eu ROM. In the end Mi Max 3 is a good choice if you want to upgrade from either Mi Max Prime or Mi Max 2.

Just got this phone, so I figured I'd give my opinion. I'm in the US on Tmobile and coming from an Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra, the Mi Max 3 is AMAZING! Feels great in the hand, screen looks good, and battery life is a beast. I play a few non-intensive games and the cpu holds up well. Faceunlock is surprisingly fast. It feels like I have no lock screen at all. Fingerprint sensor seems accurate as well, but I don't use it as much due to face unlock. On Tmobile, I'm getting download speeds of 50mbps. So far, my only complaint is the speakers. While there are stereo spekaers (top and bottom), the top is very tinny, like someone called you and they're playing music on their end. All in all, if you want a phone with a huge battery for watching videos like I did, the Mi Max 3 will not disappoint.

As a MIUI device it is likely to receive support/updates for longer than if it was an android one device. And there are som quite good features in MIUI one quickly comes to miss in stock android. Hence I switched back to my Mi Max, from being on a fairly stock Cubot, in my wait for mi mix 3.

Have they really made it that complicated now, or was this your standard approach based on other deviceds in the past? When I got 1st gen. Mi Max i got one with a un-official global ROM and hence no OTA etc. All I had to do to get the Chinese ROM was to download Xiaomis software (MI PC Suite) on my PC, connect my phone and it detected it and flashed over the vendor ROM. Then all I had to do was to add Google apps myself. No unlocking bootloader or anything like that. Did you try this option first?

Techtablets test was standarized for actual brightness (he set 200 nites output on both screens). Frankie just set slider on 50% on both phones, so he did it wrong again. I guess he has no way to measure brightness objectively. Still, now there is no doubt that Mi Max 3 has superior battery.

I have managed to get my Mi Max 3 working in the UK. Most sellers are loading "Official Global ROM", there is no official Global ROM yet. Its something cooked up to make early sales and it is horribly broken (poor signal and you cannot make calls).  Also you will never be able to get official OTA updates with that ROM.  In fact there are four ROMs floating around: The real Global ROM will be released soon. Until then you need to change to the only official Chinese ROM available: Download Fastboot : ROM MIUI 9 China Stable ROM V9.6.9.0.OEDCNFD (2.7 GB)http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&a­mp;tid=3513911&highlight=mi%2Bmax%2B3 Firmware You will need to follow the instructions for Fastboot. “MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED BEFORE DOING THIS OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE Fastboot roms are flashed through a special tool by xiaomi which can be found: here You also might need adb drivers which are found: here 1. Avoid this phone if you live in the UK. RF performance is very poor on both 2G and 3G bands. You cannot make calls! LTE/Wifi works fine. Frequencies are compatible with UK networks but these phones cannot handle medium/low signal strength. Tested on O2, EE and Vodafone at multiple locations (tried all the different bands/protocols too). Using the same test SIM cards my iPhone 8, Xperia and S7 and Note 2 can all make/receive calls, Xiaomi fails every time. Even in the middle of London with good signal stregth Xiaomi cannot make calls while other phone have no issues!

The Max 3 still has a great battery life and a detailed screen with essentially no chance of distinguising visible pixels at normal viewing distance, nor burn-in. The Honor 10 however can't say the same. You pay more, but screen wise you get a worse experience. Not all yoututbers that get their hands on two devices know how to best test them fairly. A common fault is to set both phones at max brightness for a battery life comparison, while in fact this may be a very significant brightness setting on the devices meaning one outputs a lot more light and hence uses much more energy. Some at least eye ball the brightness, due to lack of photometer, but most I've seen just set to max brightness and call it fair - even though it's not. In example, at 100% brightness the Honor 10 outputs 449 cd/m2 while the Xiaomi Mi A1 outputs 551 cd/m2. Close to 23% difference in brightness. The Mi Max 2 outputs 519 cd/m2, which was quite and improvement over the first generation. It will be interesting to see the result of Mi Max 3, if it's in the same region or higher/lower. I'm not interested in the result of the Note 10, it's disqualified due to it's pixelated pentile screen. No way if I'm going back to 2011 and pixelated screens. Being a fairly mid-range amoled, it will probably be in the 400-450 cd/m2 region, so it's not that far of a strech to assume the Mi Max 3 is about 15-20% brighter- hence no shock that the Note 10 lasted about 20% longer in frankietech's review, with a lot of dark content favouring amoled. Especially considering the Mi Max 3 also powers 50% more sub-pixels for that proper RGB display, freeing the user from pixelated screen nightmares.

Frankie Tech posted a video on YouTube called "Honor Note 10 vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3 - Battery Drain Test!". Go check it out. The results show the honor note 10 VASTLY outlasting the mi max 3 despite its bigger battery. Conclusion? The mi max 3 has extremely poor software-hardware optimization. Skip this one guys, trust me. Not worth the cheap price in the long term. Add an extra couple of hundred bucks and get something that'll perform better in the long run. I'm personally done with xiaomi. There's a reason their phones are cheap.

I just got the Max 3, popped my sim card in and everything looked good- until i made my first phone calls. reception dropped from all bars to 1 , dropped call. Now i can only make calls when standing outside the house. inside any building there is no reception. Max1, Max 2 work perfectly. Also, there is a sound coming out of the bottom speaker( which sounds like a Crowcall), top speaker hardly anything, I wasted my money big- time. I hope this reception thing is only software related and can be remedied some day. I am using the global rom since i live in Canada. I did not have expected this from Xiaomi.

Honor 10 is a twice the price device and it would be something crazy going on if that pentile amoled didn't use significantly less power. Not only due to the fact that a lot the testing was with black bars or areas covering a large amount of the screen, but also that the Mi Max 3 has 50% more sub pixels to power, giving the display a lot more detail than the Note 10. Both devices was also set to 100% brightness and one might be outputting more lumens at this setting than the other. Better to wait for GSMarena reviews.

All yt reviews I've seen claim that the battery life is superb. Comparable with Mi Max 2. As for Honor Note 10 battery comparison with Mi Max 3 battery, it's not clear which one is better. I've seen 2 videos comparing the two (by Frankie Tech and Techtablets) and the results were contradictory. Please, post youtubers's names or links to some reviews that confirm what you say.

Several youtubers have been running battery drain tests and have found that this phone is extremely poorly optimized with its 5500 mah battery, it was being destroyed by phones like the honor note 10 with its 5000 mah battery, even phones with much smaller batteries like 4000 mah, and 3750 mah. Write mi max 3 on aliexpress then look after MI Global store, u will see it very quick and there u can see a banner where they wrote "duty free to eu with dhl" or "no custom duty for the eu". So there u dont have any risk for paying tax and duty. They send from a eu warehouse mostly in this cases, so go for it then. And always best, fastest and most safe with DHL and there you are 100% sure getting a tracking no. to. And tell the seller what to write of cost for custom and they will write it. Good post, I agree. Also what should be tested more often are the gray/black values ranging from 1-12. I found that with the Mi Max 2 the greys/blacks were far too dark, so one can't make out details such as in darker films like Gone Girl or Prisoners. No details in dim lit scenes/ on faces. On my shitty backup phone Alcatel Shine Lite the display is much better tuned and far clearer and true to the source file. This must be addressed in every GSMarena review imo, as the Max 2 isn't the only phone who suffers from it, many others do too. So not only amoled can suffer from black crush but also IPS can suffer from poor tuning.

Almost twice the price and, until proven otherwise, a pretty much gauranteed pixelated pentile AMOLED which will completely ruin a otherwise decent phone, no thanks. You really need to keep this phone at an arms distance to avoid pixel nightmare. 1080 x 2220 pixels, 355 ppi density, but not really. Effectively 236 ppi due to pentile matrix. GSMarena really needs to address this better with regards to AMOLED displays. it wasn't too bad with FHD at 5" up to about 6", but from there on it's almost as awful as the 720p pentile of the 4.8" SGS3. Worst HD screen in a flagship device ever. Huawei should have gotten a IPS display instead. Pixelated displays should not be a thing in 2018. Vivo NEX has the same issue. It is unaccepteable, but glossed over by GSMarena's review. And again, a otherwise great piece of hardware. It's got a 6.59" screen with a 1080 x 2316 resolution giving 388 ppi density, which would be good if true, but due to it's pentile display it is experienced more like 258 ppi, and not quite good enough. For 6.1 to 7" devices, AMOLED must either be FHD+ with RGB matrix, or 1440p if RGBG pentile. Note 10 also lacks bluetooth 5, for some reason, has a smaller battery and requires adapter to work with most wired headphones. Not necessarily a dealbreaker, but the old bluetooth is strange. The main selling point of Honor Note 10 and Mi Max 3 are their big screens and the Mi Max 3 is superior, despite AMOLED vs LCD. Had the resolution or sub pixel matrix been different, it would have been a win for the Note 10. Unless one has bad vision, it will be easy to get irritated of the pixelated screen of the Note 10 as a daily driver.

I like the XiaoMi MiMax phones and have a Xiaomi Mi Max and a Xiaomi Mi Max 2. What they both miss (and Xiaomi is NOT reacting to this feedback), that the Region Settings of their MIUI is missing two for me important Regions in the Settings. They totally miss the countries Australia and Austria. Joke is, they have Regions like Barbardos, Botswana, Congo, Falkland Islands, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Malta, Namibia, North Korea, Qatar, St. Lucia and Zambia, but they DO NOT have Australia and DO NOT have Austria. Difficulty is, when I travel to Austria for example, and the local SIM Provider lets me install their AP only when I have the Region Setting to Austria, I fail to install that. It is difficult to understand why XiaoMi does not bother about this, as I have numerous times already reported this issue.

Anyone know what the Widevine DRM security level is? I'd like to buy Max 3 but watch a lot of Netflix and concerned that if it's only security level 3, then 480P quality wont be very good on 6.9" screen size. 2 year in the row (2016 & 2017) Xiaomi Mi Max series display is 6.44 inch with 16:9 aspect ratio. Last year Mi Max (2) was release with Snapdragon 625 on May 2017 and Qualcomm makes debut for Snapdragon 660 also on the same months on the same year meaning not possible for Mi Max 2 to come with SD660 the newly release chipset at that time.

Mi Max 3 only 6.9 inch was not big enough for small tablets line and chipset was not as good, only 636. Last year they put 7.0 or 6.99 inches, 660 but now, they reduced from 7.0 to 6.9 inch screen size and they change to 636 and they cancelled pro version. Not interested. Get the honor note 10 or foldable phone's, better solving specs. Hope Mi Max 4 will increase to 7.0 inch and 710.

I like that they changed the design from the Mi Max 2 (which I own), but the phone itself is bigger, thicker and heavier (on paper). You are free to categorize products whichever way you want. Market reality is a significant overlap of buyers between Mi Max and Mi Pad series, especially in China. Xiaomi knows this and that's why they're not offering a Snap 710 version. It will cannibalize Mi Pad sales. My Mi Max replaced an aging iPad which was too heavy. I had 5 working smartphones so it was bought as a tablet all along. It's called a phablet for a reason. It can be used as a phone or a tablet, or both. It's up to each user how he/she prefers to use the device. This "always a smartphone first then a tablet" concept is your opinion.

If you decided you don't need that then you always go for a tablet. Why? Because tablets are MUCH better at being tablets than smartphones are, so why suffer smaller screen, longer aspect ratio etc. But hey, tablets really suck at being phones, even if they happen to offer the functionality.

You are assuming users have only one phone and no tablets. I know a few people IRL who bought Mi Max or Max2 to use primarily as a tablet, including myself. Chinese forums have numerous discussion of "Mi Max 3 or Mi Pad 4?". Their prices and specs are pretty close. Max 3 is significantly lighter and that's an important consideration in real life usage.

Um, no. Mi Pad 4 LTE is not a smartphone. It's not the same consumer base. Some tablet users may consider dropping their phone & tablet in favor of a single device, but that's it. The only competition for MM3 in 2018 is Honor Note 10, and it's going to be twice as expensive. That is how small that market is.

Yes the Max 3 is a niche super-sized phablet but it's running up against the Mi Pad 4 LTE with the Snap 660. If they offer Mi Max Pro with Snap 710 it would clearly have a better chipset and the target audience overlaps. They could've differentiated these two products better by making the Mi Pad 4 larger (8.5 inches+) or just sticking to the old 4:3 aspect ratio on the Mi Pad 3. Without a Snap 710 version, Mi Max 3 is merely a super-sized Redmi Note 5 with a bigger battery and a much higher price. It's a niche product that's not niche enough.

I am no expert on purchasing electronics from Ali sellers, sorry. Remember there are retail stores as well (e.g. GeekBuying) which have usually better deals. If you live in EU as I do, you may consider buying from a local importer. It's simple, safe, you are not bothered with VAT/customs and you can even get yourself 2-year EU Xiaomi warranty (which, surprisingly, covers phones that have xiaomi.eu installed). But if you have some experience with Aliexpress, I'm sure you can find yourself a sweet deal too. Just remember to read descriptions carefully, go for safe delivery (Priority Line, DHL etc.), use Pay Pal for payment (or Visa/Mastercard with chargeback, I recommend Pay Pal though) and you'll be fine! As far as different ROM versions are concerned, you can install xiaomi.eu over official Chinese ROM, and later on official global ROM over xiaomi.eu as well, if you choose to do so. Just read some tutorials. Xiaomi.eu supports OTA updates. You won't be able to incrementally update your system with small patches, mind you. Full flash only. I won't recommend any Aliexpress seller as I don't have enough experience with the platform. If you live in Poland, Allegro has some very nice deals on MM3 right now.

Yes, Xiaomi is known for cannibalizing their own market for the reasons you mentioned. But that is not really valid strategy for niche devices with small target group. There are just not that many people interested in super-sized phablets. There is no market to oversaturate, so why bother developing more than one device? They did the thing with Mi Max Prime/Pro back in 2016, but it was more like an upgrade to the original design, not a competing product. Actually their mid-rangers (say, phones that use SD 6xx) are quite fairly priced in comparison to the rest of their offer. Unfortunatelly it doesn't apply to Mi Max line. They are niche, they don't really belong to mid-range category. You either want one for any reason or you don't. If it doesn't fit your specific needs, you'll make better deal going for a regular Xiaomi phone e.g. something like Redmi Note 5 Pro (same spec, much cheaper) or Mi 8 SE (same price, much better spec).

Because global version hasn't been officialy released yet. Phones that are being sold now are probably based on xiaomi.eu ROM (semi-official international version of Chinese ROM). Latest version already supports Mi Max 3. This is not necessarily a bad thing. There are pros and cons of using xiaomi.eu over official global ROM (which is most likely 1-2 months away).

People did tests on that phone and found out that doogee's claims that their phone had 12,000 mah was a lie. It in fact only had around 8,000 mah. Doogee is not a trustworthy company like Xiaomi.

Unlikely, that would be a dumb move. They are aware of the fact they have competition. Now many of those people who were keeping their money for a more premium variant of MM3, will go for Honor Note 10. If there ever were some actual plans for releasing Mi Max 3 Pro, it would make much more sense to keep everybody in a state of uncertainty till short before release.

Yeah there are a ton of smaller phones but their battery capacity most of the time is 3000 mah, the only one that isn't like that is the Lenovo p2 but that is old and on Nougat and the design isn't that good.

Yeah, some youtuber made similar observation about only one speaker playing audio. Again: this is highly unlikely, Xiaomi advertises Mi Max 3 stereo speakers in their ads. There may be some software issue or, more likely, upper speaker is for high tones only (as was the case with Mi Max 2, I recall?) while the lower one is for mids and lows. and that makes sound coming from lower speaker more apparent for most of the time. But I'd gladly hear or read some feedback about the issue from someone who owns MM 3.

SD 636 is capable of 1080p/120fps video recording. If Xiaomi capped it at 30 or 60fps, I guess you'd still be able to get full 120fps with some 3rd party app (root may be required though).

Yes, it's about 40-50% more powerful. But in terms of features Mi Max 3 is rather incremental upgrade, there is nothing groundbreaking different compared to Mi Max 2. Better SoC (still, just a mid-ranger), bigger screen (and better quality from what I've seen), some AI gimmicks no one cares about, Note 5 camera and that's it. Mi Max 2 is only year old, I wouldn't upgrade.

NFC: Probably not. Stereo speakers: 100% yes. They even advertise their quality on Chinese version of Mi website. Gorilla Glass: I'd say 90% yes. All previous Mi Max models had some version of Gorilla Glass. I'd be very surprised if this wouldn't be the case with Mi Max 3.

It's not up for sale yet, but according to the MI seller, it is expected to be available to the consumers by Monday (23/07) -IN CHINA-. Great phone, great features. It's not downgrade. Read about different gorilla glass versions. GG4 is more shatter-resistant but less scratch-resistant than GG3. If I had to choose I would pick version 3. I have good experience with it and you just don't drop your phone. Period.

I've been using many of MI phone and never by all means disappointed from material, workmanship, hardware, software and well engineered UI. Obviously not true. You just making this up as people usually do when they don't understant simple math. Just compare data on screen area provided by gsmarena. It would take 6.7 inch 16:9 screen to be bigger than 6.9 inch 18:9 screen. 6.9in/18:9 wil be significantly bigger than 6.44in/16:9. In reality yes, screen will be longer, but width will be pretty much the same. That is where these extra inches went.

I think a lot of people are missing the whole point of xiaomi's mi max series. It was designed specifically for people who didn't want a flagship phone but were just interested in an affordable phablet with a big screen big battery and decent mid range specs and great construction. If you want a flag ship phablet it's not going to happen for $250. Take out your wallet and prepare $900 for the flagship phablets.

They've waited too long. Now Huawei started to rush Honor Note 10 out of nowhere. Yeah sure it's going to be much more expensive but there are very few ~7in. devices on the market so they are going to compete with one another anyway. If Honor Note 10 gets released this month, it will damage sales of Mi Max 3. Especially if Xiaomi makes us wait for global version for weeks as they usually do, people will get impatient.

Well, depends on what you are after. AMOLED screens are not better than IPS, it's not self-evident. They have much better blacks and this wow effect and it's ok to like that but if value color reproduction, nothing beats good IPS panel. There is reason that all high-end full size monitors for professionals in, say, photo editing are all IPS/MVA/PVA panels, not OLEDs. Organic display is good for entertaiment, they are great for movie watching etc. but that is not reality. And their life time is much more limited comparing to LCD. That is where this technology shows its limitation. It hasn't been resolved for years! That is one of reasons for Samsung to develop quantum dot for larger displays, despite the fact they pretty much nailed AMOLED technology.

Have the same problem with my Asus Zenfone Ultra, i love this phone 6,8 inch and not in the damn new small width 18:9 format. So i wait for this or mi mix 3 og the huawei honor note 9 or 10 or what they decide to name it. Or maybe i stick with the Ulefone t2 pro. Its really a problem getting use to a big display phone, i cant go down in size, cant hit the letters on the tiny keyboard anylonger... Shitty

This is just wrong information. Mi Max has a better SoC. If you are going by the chip name, then consider that Mi Max Prime SD652 was originally named SD620. Mi Max 2 has SD625, which is better in every aspect, notably fab size which was shrinked from 28nm to 14nm.

It's pretty much of the size of last year model (Mi Max1 size as well) but with much bigger screen so they improved on body-to-screen ratio. Even with SD636 it's going to be much greater improvement over Mi Max 2 than Mi Max 2 was over Mi Max. In terms of design and hardware. Hardly "the biggest disappointment in the mobile industry ever". I mean, what did you expect? What was the base of your expectation that you criticize Mi Max 3 for being Mi Max? If you want less width (and less screen area probably), just wait few months for Honor Note 10. And prepare some cash coz it's going to be much more expensive than the one above.

I think just a hoax and rumors that it will be launched with SD 710 there is no reliable source to back it .Only 3 models have been listed on Tenna certification site including the 6gb model u said which has a 1.8ghz processor most probably a SD636 in all 3 models.Also Mi 8 SE has just launched with a SD 710 so its highly unlikely they will launch a MI max 3 with a SD710 so fast.
