I've had a V171 for 6 years now and it's worked without a hitch. It's a good basic phone and being a camshell protects the screen from damage and the buttons getting pressed by car keys etc while in my pocket.

I like this phone. I have the v171 since july 2008 (in Argentina v172). it had the flex broken so I have to "bend" it to see the screen. then it fell from 5-6 meters high and broke the screen. it looked like there was a bat hanging from the screen. then I fixed it until it broke again and I had to buy another one. (I bought another v171). however i like it because it is a simple phone and its low price makes easy purchase. plus it's small and lightweight. I dont mind the small screen or the crapy ringtones. i just use it as a phone and text message i hope my opinion was helpful to you saludos Chichardi from Argentina

this phone, well, let's just say it's not the best phone I've ever seen. i mean, there is no camera, the screen is tiny, and you cant even get it in any other color than silver! the antenna sticking up makes it look out-of-style, i would much rather have any other phone in the world than this one. Or, i would rather not even have a phone at all!

The problem with 'Searching, please wait' appears like 5 minutes after you opened it, not necesarily when it's charging. After 5 minutes it's all ok...

This phone sucks. I had it for 2 years cuz I couldn't afford buying sth else. And it looks far better in the pictures than it really is. Although I didn't hae any problems with it, it doesn't switch on and off or sth like this, it's a torture writing sms, the vibrator and the ringtones aren't working after an year and when you must lock it, it keeps unlocked and your battery will be probably over after a few hours. If you can't send sms, you can power off the phone, do a master reset (menu-settings-other settings-initial setup-security code (000000))and check center number under messages. Also, you can contact your carrier for this.

This phone does exactly what it supposed to do - the basics! I only use call/text and the phone has served me well for 2 years. The only reason I am upgrading is now I want an MP3 phone. The V171 is a great basic phone, never had any problems with it.

The V171 is an excellent phone that functions well. If you buy a remanufactured V171 from Net10 and have trouble with the headset volume being to low, call customer service and they will send you another one and they'll pay shipping both ways. That's excellent customer support. The V171 is a reliable phone for an excellent price.

Oh my gosh, ok, i just got this phone a few days ago- everything seemed really cool at first, besides the small screen and no display in the front, but then i turned it off to charge overnight and when i turned it on it says "Searching...Please Wait". Well I Been Waiting For 3 Days now- i can't do Nothing! tried everything possible i think-tryin to keep myself from tweakin it to peices -paid $30 for 300 min. still have 286 min. left - This phone is rediculous along with the customer service. Is this phone able to Forward at all? its in the Menu but when i try n select it nothing happens.

Sure it has its shortcomings (many) but on advantage over some other phones with gprs functionality...it is able to capture(save) images right off any site visited even ones that charge for downloads....freeeeeeee images screensavers etc. freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is always a plus for.....meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Worst voice quality I have ever heard. Garbled and muffled. Poorest performance in vehicles. Big delay after turning it on to use the phone book or make a call--"searching-try later". Old Nokia 1220 from TracFone 10X better.

I would not recommend this phone to anyone. I have problems with my eyes so I absolutely hated the fact the screen was so small. There were no features on it. The phone was so old that there were no more house chargers for it. Fortunately, I did find a car charger for it, although I hated having to go outside to charge my phone in the car. After about a month, the phone would not charge at all.

This phone sucks the screen is so small and it says the browser works but it doesn't. the ringtones are so.......... the memory is too small. the battery doesn't even last long it locks itself when it fells like it and you won't be able to unlock it. l have got to say THIS PHONE SUCKS!

dear Selena... if i were you i'd be glad if someone will stole this pfone from me. i have it for 1 year and what can i say? it sucked! i don't have to say another word about the screen - everybody knows - but let's take the games : if u ever take out the sim out f the pfone you will loose all the results. and ...if u really like those gams u must be a child. and oh yeah.. after one yeah imagine my little screen all black -or blue- with some horizontal white -or red- lines. i was really desapointed by that and imagine that i have a nokia phone since 2003 wich is more than ok. please forget about motorola v171!!!

Decent phone, got mine thru NET 10, customer service thru NET 10 really stinks though unless you can understand someone with a very heavy Indian accent. That's one thing that really irks me is when customer service is overseas or all customer service reps are hard to understand.

this is a phone to make and get calls. if you're looking for something to also take pictures, watch a movie on, heat up your lunch, jump your car's dead battery or give someone CPR with, you're expecting too much. anyone with common sense will be happy with this phone, it does what it's suppose to do.

Does yours shut off for no apparent reason? Its not a software flaw. Its a flawed case design. Put a peice of folded paper between the battery and rear cover, the battery will loose connection.

This is a great phone. Most of the complaints I read pertain to features that really aren't necessary. The basics you need for communication are there and everything works just as intended. Yes, I've had to talk to Net 10 phone reps a few times but anybody that says these people lack courtesy and knowledge either works for another company or lack brains of their own. The Net 10 people have ALWAYS been helpful and knowledgeable. Bravo to both Motorola and Net 10.

Pretty good phone. I have used cingular and had a motorola v120 it had static all of the time, but I think it was cingular service. I used us cellular too and my contract just ran out. I had to pay $80.00 a month for the main phone and a $9.99 add a line turned out to be more. I dont to have to have a contract. This net 10 phone is great for no contract. You are in charge. I wish it had better ringers (real music) but this is for an emergency if needed. I like the phone.

This is my second cell phone. I have only had pre paid phones because I am just to stubborn to have a contract, plus this is cheaper for me since I don't use it as my main phone. My only issue is that the volume is not loud enough for me sometimes. I have trouble hearing people on the phone. A friend of mine has a nicer phone (with a more expensive plan) and I can hear on his fine. So I assume it's not my hearing.

I NEVER wanted to be tied to a cell phone. It's so rude to hold conversations in public, like everyone cares to hear!!! But, I relented when I was faced with an emergency. I got this as my first cell phone (I'm 59) when I was evacuated from New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina and I was in Tennessee for a while. Let me say the service has been great! And the price, fantastic. Driving home from TN when we could get back home I continued to have good service (except where cells were down and NO ONE had service). Can't complain about the cost either. Look during the day my children, husband and friends can get me at the office. In the evening I'm at home or taking dance lessons, playing tennis or shopping. I can be reached on my reliable V171 w/Net 10 service. Who has to play games or listen to music or take pics from a phone. Come on, I'm a baby-boomer and like nice things, but I don't like throwing my $$$ away. My friends with expensive plans are always having trouble with their phones. So far, so good!

You guys really need to stop bitching about the ringtones...it's a cheap phone with a cheap plan, so obviously it won't have a wap browser, or a camera. Plus, go to NET10 to buy ringtones...sure they may not be MP3 Ringtones, but if you want to listen to music go buy a creative zen micro MP3 player (IPODs suck!) and if you want to take pics than use a digital camera! It's a phone, not a supercomputer.

on www.net10.com you can download ringtones do ur fone. Who cares if it doesnt have realtone or a camera, i have an ipod 2 listen to music and a digital camera to take pictures. I am a teenager 2 and i still love this phone and the fact the net10 is only like 20 bucks a month, do you really want to be spending all ur money on 100 cell phone bills just to be able to take pictures at 25 cents each i mean if you get a digital camera you can still send picture to your friends to email or im's. and y do you all care about the quality of the ringtone if you only hear it for 15 seconds. Overall i think this phone and its service is great. i got this phone for my 17 year old son a few months ago. i've dropped it a few times, so has my son as we were mountain biking. IT STILL WORKS! all the bells and whistles are great if you want to pay for them. he likes his phone. he doesnt need all the ringtones. he has his mrobe mp3 player for music and it has a camera built into it. for video games, theres the internet and ps2. for video, theres hdtv. this is a great phone. i have to admit NET10 does need a better choice of phones. i like their service. by the way, i can afford to get a contract but choose not to. so its not a credit issue. i think NET10 is a great prepaid service and the v171 is a great phone.

And, yes, I also tried to download a different ringtone and couldn't. So I've totally changed my mind about how nice this phone is. It may be a great looking phone with a great rate plan, crystal clear sound and everything a phone should be but with only 20 ringtones installed I now want to kill myself. I'm going to take the next 2 weeks off work and investigate how to download ringtones, maybe write letters and whine and complain and try to get an act of congress passed declaring the entire phone a fraud. All you people that say the phone is good are freakin liers. Just admit it is a piece of junk. You should at least be able to download the ringtones and games from your phone. The three games suck. You cant even see the damn tetris lookin game. People try to send me text messages and i wont get them for a freakin hour or two. The signal always goes out on the piece crap. Ill dial the number and push call and the darn thing will just end the call after it has already taken my 1.0 minute. That is all kinds of bull. I buy 300 minutes and only get to use about half of them because of failed text messaging and dropped calls. The ringtones you can get our are dumb keytones. I gave up on trying to download ringtones and tryed to find the dang keypress tones on the internet and coudnt find any. This phone is a motordont.

I think this phone is great!!!!! It has , sleek design and for a cheap price. Very nice phone with basic features. I would recommend it to anyone, except to those who are looking for cameras, mp3 players and downloading ringtones on a phone. It has a small screen, i agree, but it doesn't bother me. Great phone!!!!

I think that you people need to get it straight that a cell phone is not used to download ringtones and screensavers. It's used as a source of communication, not to waste money on 15 seconds of sound sounds?!?!?! I think that net 10 as an EXCELENT plan, 10 cents a minute is great, my friend pays 25 cents a minute. So stop complaining about not bieng able to download rintones. If you want to download ringtones, then pay the freakin 25 cents a minute for it!!!

I bought one for this reason: I HAD Cin--lar(you know who)sevice.I got sick and tired of paying 35 cents a minute for their service WHETHER or not anyone answered the phone..I STILL got time and money taken off.THIS was a ripoff.I figure at least if this is going to happen..it will only happen at 10 cents a shot.As for a camera not being on it(this phone)..I have a 14 meg digital camera for that(taking pix) ..that's what cameras are for.(ie:I didn't buy a camera to call people on.).I bought the phone not to hold major chat sessions on,but for contact,general use,etc.I have a home phone for which people can get ahold of me forthat purpose.As they say,you are getting what you are paying for;you are not being held by a major corp. to a 1-2 year contract w/ridiculous monthly bills and overage charges and if you run out of talk time that is YOUR fault.Good way for teens to learn money management(ONLY if you as a parent make sure you are making them pay for the phone-as you should.I personally think the phone works fine and fits my needs as an alternative to using pay phones and for emergency needs and travel.

I have this phone too with net10. the ring tones are like 1.49 just for a polly and you cant buy them with your minuts you have to use a credit/debit card or paypal. I have really bad credit so for the price of the phone, service, and cost of minuts Im really happy. I just wish the ringtones were more buyer friendly.

I have been very, very happy with this phone. It is durable, as I have dropped it numerous times and it still works. The coverage seems good and I think the price is extremely reasonable for phone calls and text messages. The battery seems to last an adequate amount of time, both during talking and down times. For those who complain...if you want more, you have to pay for it. This phone will average you $30/month, and almost any plan will be much more than that...$40 to $80 to $100/month.

I tried net10.com, and they have ringtones pplz, but extremely crappy ones, i wish they would consnider supporting ringtones and wallpapers. This is a good phone when it comes to down to communicating to people, but when you want to download thing such as ringtones it is a shame. This phone is claim to be mp3 ready, but that is nothing, but a bald face lie. I've been trying to get ringtones on my phone all day and nothing has worked. This phone is a great communicating device, but it is down right degrace when it come to trying to download things. I feel that this company who made this phone should stop saying that this phone can do things that it can not such as download things. If this phone can download items than someone needs to show me,but it not than I feel some of the statement that where write in the phone's manual should be taken out because I'm sick of wasting minutes trying to download things that I can not get.

I bought the net10 version of this phone for $80 and a year of service for $300. first thing i noticed, after the confusing online activation, the features were totally different from the motorola website info.they are 2 totally different phones on the inside, and net10 actually admitted that to me. No one will give out ringtones or wallpapers via sms, but the phone IS capable of media through txt msging.I guess if you can find someone else who had a similar phone with compatible ringtones and pay them to download ringtones, then send them to you via sms. As far that phone goes, its a nice budget phone for a non technical user.the net10 package has even more limited features, and some bugs always seem to show up.My phonwe number was displayed on my phone wrong for some reason, and could chage it! and other small stuff always comes up.heck, i disabled my service from my phone once by pushing the wrong codes in the prepaid code entry section.Net10 needs to find someone to host free ringtones and wallpapers for net10 users. I actually got cingular rintones sent to my phone, but they were incomplete, because they didnt list the v171 so i picked a different model.

I bought this phone a couple of days ago from Net10. It doesn't take pictures, do dishes, or drive me around town. Everyone is saying you can't download ringtones. I don't csre about ring tones. The phone rings just fine, has all the features I need (except for speakerphone) and the signal strength with Net10 is excellent- as good or better than Verizon. I am very happy with this one.

Spoke to Patty @ 1-877-836-2368, was ask a lot of question including my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (I’m not asking for credit why would you need my S/S number) Was told it would take a week to transfer the old cell number ???? I was given a case # 10101010 for me to keep checking on NET10 tech support web site when ready. August 29th 2005 NET10 web site said ready to activate. Checked back with NET10 to activate phone, after talking to two customer service people and entering a series of numbers from fifteen to twenty five digits (one hundred and fourteen numbers in all), was told it would take a couple hours and I could start making calls. That was 30 hours ago, I have talked to NET10 twice in the last two hours and still can’t make a call?? It appears NET10 is holding all the cards, you have my money, I have paid for the time, and own a phone that I CAN’T make or receive a call. Wow... everyone is so right about this stupid phone! I was lured in by their supposed claim to be able to download ringtones...... WHAT A LAUGH! I've tried other ways of getting the ringtones, and well... after 3 DAYS of searching I said F*ck it! I wish I could file a lawsuit against these bas*ards for false advertising! I mean... at least let me get my money back for the phone and the minutes!!!!!!! You want a reliable phone, sure it works. I think that Net10 is a great provider but I would love to download some ringtones and wallpapers and when I go to a downloading site, they never have Net10 as a provider. I have a motorola v171 phone and when I want a ringtone and give me the options of phones it goes to Motorola v180. I guess no one has ever heard of motorola v171.

definitely, I have net10 service too. The reception is great though, I was at some foot mountains, outdoor type, and sure enough I had 3-4 bars up on the phone. Sure it went down to a 2 but still, the friends i was with, they had none! They had cingular, and some other one. Anywho, yes, net 10 should provide ringtones, who knows, if we persist them to do so, they might end up doing it.Well, laters peps!

You may also find ringtones for sale there too.;-) Don't rely on any 'phone to download anything via GPRS, go to the maker's website if in doubt and do it by SMS, et al. Seems a safe bet. Boring? Simplistic? Small screen? Well frankly, yes. Small in size? Effective and useable as a mobile 'phone? Hell, yes! I ran this simple communication device on one charge for over 7 days without a recharge. (It still had a third of the battery meter showing). If you want a fancy 'phone, pay the price for it and forget it. If you need a simple, mobile telephone that works well for a long time on one battery charge............. Buy a V171;-) I also have a StarTAC 70,85 and 130, good 'phones in thier day and very stylish. Retro cool, so I'm told. ;-) Big wink! The V171 continues that tradition and then some. I don't need ring tones (though, they can be downloaded from :- if you want them. Moto say this 'phone will run for 12 days on standby, I don't know if it's tue but it does do a good job on that score compared with other small 'phones. It's cheap too, I got mine on Tesco mobile with three favourite numbers that cost ten pence per minute for voice and five pence per text. Go figure. ;-) Cheers, Stan.

Ya know, I've read a lot of comments about this phone, here's my opinion. I puchased this phone to be just that, a mobile phone that's realiable and basic. When I talk on the phone, I can't see the screen, so who cares? I can see what I have to to program it and see who's calling. And as long as it makes noise to let me know someone's calling, who cares what noise it makes? As far as games, I have gameboys; for music, I have stereos and an iPod, for video, I have computers, vhs and dvd players, cameras digital, film and vhs and yes....television!THIS IS A GREAT, LOW COST UNIT and it does WHAT A PHONE IS SUPPOSED TO DO and it DOES IT WELL. As far as Net10 goes, hey spend yourself silly and get all the bangs and whistles, it's a free country. Net10 does exactly for me what I need it to do.

I like this fone. It is stylish, practical and value for money. I can't understand why no one can download tones. The first thing I did was down load one for the ringtone and one for the messages, as I didn't like the built in ones. They were ninety cents each.

Motorola V171 is capable of downloading the ringtones, the only thing your need to have is GPRS activated on your # from the service provider, then you can easily download the ringtones, i have quite a big database of ringtone for V171, in case any of you need ringtones, just mail me, i will get it for you, make sure you get GPRS activated on your #..... i m not gonna charge a single penny for any of the ringtones..... ;)

Motorola V171 was a gift for my 12YR son. On The box it said you can down load ring tones. Well,were still trying to figure out how. NET 10 DON'T OFFER RING TONES. For $130. I just bought this phone a week ago for my husband after leaving "Simple Freedom Prepaid Cell Phone." With Simple Freedom, we have not been able to make outgoing calls in almost two weeks now and several calls and E-mails to customer service still hasn't gotten the issue resolved. I went out a few days ago and bought another one for mysef as well. I'm not about the frills and ringtones, all we needed was RELIABLE service and we now have it with NET 10 A side from the reliable service, I love everything about it. Well, I just got off the phone with customer service for net 10 about this phone..apparently even though two different places on THEIR packaging as well as the sign above the display and the "phone expert" at wal-mart AND THE NET 10 WEB SITE ALL say this phone is capible of downloading ring tones, it's not possible to download any for it!!! Talk about false advertising!! They say that the phone itself is capible but you must have a provider..if you buy it as a pay as you go phone you cannot..even though they are advertising it that way on their net 10 package..it says nowhere that if you get a net 10 you can't..everywhere I look it says you can and even on their site it says you can. Had I known this before getting it I'd have chosen a different phone..I'm sick of these preprogrammed ones and it REALLY pisses me off that they advertise something that isn't possible for the net 10 phone. I'd advise anyone that wants to be able to personalize this phone not to buy a net 10 phone..looks like all you get really is phony advertising and lies. Thanks a lot! YOU SUCK NET 10 PHONE! For the price of $130 this is a great phone. I have been able to download wallpapers, ringtones, and screensavers. The only complaint I have is how do I get rid of the service provider, clock and time off the screen so I can see the wallpapers better.

A loverly phone for only �29.99 at woolworths..i read the reviews & the complaints seemed to centre around the large font...i however found the large font a bonus to those with poor sight...also the screen is bright & the buttons are a loverly blue colour & are not to small for folks with large fingers (like myself)....at �30.00 its a great bargain....get one before woolworths sell out!

I bought this phone under the guise I could download ringtones. The manual had directions on how to connect to the web, though the web was not located anywhere in the main menu or sub menus . . . after 35 minutes of that, I e-mailed NET10 wireless and they said they didn't know when their web services would be available. So, now I'm stuck with a phone that can only be used as a phone. The screen is way too small. However, it does get great reception. I rarely dropped below 5 bars-- while talking inside Target in the bathroom!! Now that's service. In my opinion, if you want a phone just for emergencies and you're not into anything too fancy, then this phone is for you . .. though, the price is too steep for what it's worth. You can buy other "basic" phones for less than $40. I just purchased a Motorola v220 and it should be here in the mail today (I hope). I was disapointed, but now I need to get rid of it. I bought it when it first came out last month. (sigh) . . . Thanks.

This is an excellent and sturdy very basic cellphone. That is what it is intended to be and that is what you get. No frills - just a good telephone. My only negative comment is that the graphics are a little juvenile - especailly the open/animations. I haven't been able to figure out how to shut them off yet. The english manual is availble here:

From what i've seen, i don't really like it, a v180 is a far better phone, decent screen, it looks nice. I saw a v150 once and the screen is very, very small, plus no external screen, i wouldn't buy this phone unless i received it as a gift, and maybe not even then.
