I totally agree. While I do not have the Z540, I have the 804SS (same phone) rolled out by Vodafone in the Japanese market. I now use it on the AT&T network. Oh, and I feel sorry for the CAPS. They never meant to hurt anyone, lol.

The samsung sgh-z540v can access the internet step.1 press center or top left botton on the key pad ,step.2 press up on the keypad and the icon highlited should be the internet icon now select ,step.3 scroll down to "enter url" select and enter the website.

To the person complaining about this : 'please wait' screen -> vodafone logo screen -> blank screen -> 'please wait' screen -> vodafone logo screen It seems this is a common problem. When you switch on your phone, as soon as it starts, hit green call-out button and keep it like that. Phone will come-up normally. After that switch-off and on again. Problem solved.

Hey V804SS Guy, Take your 804 to a repair shop and asked for the generic Z540 firmware to be flashed to it. The Japanese firmware does have MP3 Restrictions and yes when you go over 160 Characters it either changes the msg into a MMS (well Jap Sharps do) or will stop u typing. If you have that phone flashed to a different firmware you will notice a difference. Timmy

hey guys. just got my vodafone 804ss yesterday. it's great! especially since i've been wanting a clamshell phone for the longest time. i have a problem though. i can't receive any files through bluetooth. i can, however, send files to another mobile phone or to a PC but i'm unable to receive from any bluetooth device. secondly, whenever i activate my bluetooth, a pop-up window comes up that says "no bluetooth address!! set th BD address or it will do the wrong action." i noticed that there are some who have the same problem, but i haven't read any post that answers it, or maybe i just missed it. please help me! thank you very much! my email is [email protected] or send me an SMS (if you're from the philippines) at 09179999889. thank you very much!!

Nice phone, battery suffers greatly when using 3G, drops usage from a couple of days to hours... I am dissapointed about the lack of synchronising ability with the pc software (messages and calender). Unless I am the only one with this problem I see this as one of the biggest flaws.

I had Samsung SGHZ540X for about 2 months and it has proven to be the coolest phone. However, it has not much of a memory given also the fact that it has no memory card slot. has two cameras, external and internal mp3 player. you can record videos up to an hours. it is easy to select mp3 as a ringtone. if you go to your music do go to options and it will come up with this list, play, send (via bluetooth, via mms, etc), delete, set (as caller id, ring tone)

Hi all. I've had a samsung Z540 for about 2months and its been a nightmare! I've had to send it in for repairs 4 times already.the phone freezes when sending smses. Then i have to switch it off and on agen. I've sent it in and it seems the guys at vodacom cant seem to fix it! they've given me 2 exchange units already! all 3 phones gave me problems. I dont recommend anyone investing in this phone! or maybe just no one in south africa!

NUVm, Since the Z540 has a tri-band of 900/1800/1900 mhz, t-mobile, and cingular will work since thier frequency is 1900 mhz, but you will have limited coverage depending on where u live. Although, if Z540 was tri-band 850/1800/1900 mhz, or a Quad-band(850/900/1800/1900 Mhz) it would still work in the U.S. PLUS, it would have more coverage. But sadly it does not. p.s. i only know the frequencies from t-mobile and cingular, sorry im too lazy to look up the other major us carriers.

great phone BUT it is limited to 100 schedule items and 50 Aniversary and 20 tasks and 20 memo's. so if one uses outlook and wants to sycronise then most of ones data does NOT get transfered to the phone when syncronising the phone. This is a major limitation.....

shaz, by default, it will store the SMS in the SIM card first then the phone memory. You can't change it. That's the way it is. Same for the rest of the Samsung phone. When you take pictures, it make use of the phone memory first, then you need to use PC to tranfer the picture to your card memory. You can't do a direct transfer and there is no way of setting the phone to use card memory for saving pictures when you take it. Explore more and you will find Samsung phone...erm....well.. judge for yourselves lah...

Just sharing my bad experince with this phone. 1) UI is horrible 2) Phonebook....sigh... everytime I amend or add a new contact, the contact will be place somewhere else in the phonebook, not in order. I have to go to setting and set the sorting again to bring the contact out... bring it to the service centre to flash the software, same problem. 3) It auto deleted my SMSs. 4) The battery life...erm.... CMI 5) Ringtone volume... sigh.... Although I must mention that the keypad feels good to press.

Took delivery of this phone yesterday and sending it back in favour of Sharp 770SH. The Samsung menu and screen layout drove me mad, screen gets filled up with little detail and the stupid noises the phopne makes every time you try to do anything are grossly annoying - it took me an hour to get the thing to shut up! If you're a Samsung fan you'll probably like the Z540, it certainly looks a lovely phone but has too many annoying habits for me. I was and still am a Sharp fan, my old GX15 has been brilliant and I'm still keeping it as a second phone

bluetooth does not support automatic on...need to "connect" everytime You can fix that by pressing the authorize bluetooth option then it will connect directly every samsung has that option that are bluetooth capable phone =D

Got the Samsung Z54OV on Vodacom Vodafone live. Have a problem with MMS, when receiving a video clip on MMS in GPRS area, it seems to convert the 3gp video file to a gif animated file and a drm sound file!! Can you believe it? In 3G reception it comes through fine as a 3gp file. Pics also, resizing of pics, poor quality. But only in GPRS reception. Can anyone tell me if they have had this? Or a solution to my problem? Will appreciate. Otherwise great phone!!

I just got the phone today and so far I am pretty pleased with it. Although it says in the review that the plastic material feels like metal, it is not so. This phone feels very plastic. However, it is very solidly built and I have no doubts that it will last. I also find the external stereo speakers to be very good. There is a lag of roughly 3 secs when starting the camera. The biggest dissapointment is the lack of a memory slot. This is a phone that is good but could have been the best. Anyone knows how to turn off the auto answer? Now when I flip open the phone it answers automatically but I don't want that.

What program does everybody use to connect their z540 to their computer with Bluetooth? I tried BlueSoleil and can pair the phone, but after that I can't do anything. I took the phone for the large display, dissapointed, movie clips does not utilise the full display. The display is a waste, only fully utilised when taking photos. Bluetooth: can only BT one at a time, not like D600 where youn can select 1 or multi or selected. Movie qaulity bad when played on PC, Contacts scrolling not possible. Otherwise a nice phone.

This is truly the best phone i have ever owned, takes some getting used to but is user friendly. My only gripe is that the bluetooth connection is not totally compatable to the Nokia CK-7W car hands free kit, sometimes it dosn't connect and the person you call says they can hear their own voice in the backround. Other than that its a really great phone, just love the size and weight.

Did you know that the Z540 has a built in tracker, this is a great feature, how it works is that once another sim is put in your mobile I message gets sent to a designated person. Cool right!

Hi, I bought tis phone 01july. Still testing on it. Like the display but speaker kind of weak compare with V3X. My playlist only allow 20 songs and no problem with itune m4a format. Can't sync with PC studio so send audio thru bluetooth fr my laptop. Use SEw800i b4 tis ringing tone is louder. Z540 bluetooth connection not stable sometimes can't tranfer audio on it. Restart it then OK. Is any1 hav tis problem? No Equalizer on player, quit disappointed! Own samsungE720 b4 too has equalizer on board. Preset ring tone not much. Need some basic tone for morning call ;)

CALLER ID - I don't know if you found the answer to your question Willie but you need the contact's number saved to the phone rather than the sim card to attach a picture. This is a great phone, I would recommend it to anyone.

Got mine today (Z540v - Vodafone) here in Australia and love it! Beautiful display, terrific keypad blah blah blah. Only gripe is the txt input for sms/mms etc. Seems a bit 2 fiddily but im sure ill get the hang of it within a few days like with all other mobiles. Cant get enough of it and looks terrific in all black colour scheme (including front music buttons)

In all honesty, this is a great phone, and the picture doesn't do it justice... it looks much nicer in person. Whereas the Rzr line is only there for flimsly looks (I feel like it can break when I open it), Samsung's has a good strong feel to it plus the great look. It is a practical, stylish model with a good set of features for the average user. Not everyone should want/need an ipod and a canon on their cell phone. Cell phones are meant to be used as phones. Please don't bash Samsung for coming out with an obvious quality product. 140 mb internal is ample. Only failpoint is synchronization with the pc software package and mp3 problems, but I can live with those real easy. Oh yeah, and the dual stereo speakers are dope. And the keypad kicks Razor's ass.

to transfer a file eg. mp3 from your pc to your phone all you have to do is copy the selected file off your pc and paste it in your downloads folder which is in your music folder.

hey, I just got this phone on friday and it is better than I expected. The only problem I have is with the P C studio 3.0 it came with the phone. I installed it an it would not accept the z540 it says that the latest version (after the z510)i would have to upgrade it I did that and it still would not accept it. Just got the Z540 too. I liked the Mobile Tracker feature. Wonder anybody has problems with PC studio 3? The icons of 3 of the tools are greyed-out and I can't access them: - Manage contacts and more - Manage messages - Compose multimedia messages Anybody got any idea how to fix these? I tried reinstalling the program from cd and from download - no dice. Advice from Samsung support also don't help. Thanks

I live in America and am planning on buying this phone on eBay. Before I do though, how is the screen refresh rate? Is it slow like the RAZR? How is the picture quality as well? Also, would I still be able to download things such as games and wallpapers even though I'm using it in America? I'm not sure how this kind of stuff works. Thanks.

Hi decided to take this over samsung z500 not disappointed might just be but the phone takes beautiful photos and video quality aint bad i expect the battery to be bad its 3g after all its on two bars(received it yesterday) after heavy usage have no problems with bluetooth although PC3 is giving me problems but i dont use it i have a bluetooth dongle and it works perfectly with that i like it especially the nrs i have it on oil painting i think so yeah i'd recommend it oh pls i got a 2nd battery so i really cant complain about the battery and maybe it wont be that bad

this phone sucks BIG time.it came with the samsung PC studio 3 but this stupid phone can't connect it to the usb port.been having alot of problems with it.i can't even upload anythings from the pc studio 3.when i connect the usb port,it say usb device not recongize.but when i use other device to connect it to the same port,it can.so,i know that it's not the usb port problem.

Just wanna contribute wat I know. 1)The only way to sync your phone contacts with PC is using Outlook. Forget about the Manage Contacts icon in SS Studio. 2)To view new message on cover LCD, press and hold side volume buttons. 3)I have bluetooth problem only when using SS Studio with phone. Sending files from PC to Phone via bluetooth is OK. 4)Battery life shortens with frequent video calls. 5)Service provider name on main LCD is permanent. Trust the above helps. Cheers

This phone will NOT work with Cingular UMTS in the USA. This phone is W-CMDA and uses 1900mhz/2100mhz fres. Cingular only supports 1900mhz UMTS. The z540 is HSDPA which is what Cingular supports.

it will be appreicated if anybody can advise me as to how the external display can be set so that it does not fade away completely after only 1 second ... I need to open phone to see if new messages were received ... Display settings/backlight don't make provision for this, only to change clock, personal message or wallpaper.

Just bought the phone yesterday .....under two yr plan with singtel. Phone is all that it was said to be. Very portable and slimmest 3G phone around. Although , I do have a problem with the sim card. Does any1 know how to del. all the nos. on the sim card once they've been transferred over to the phone.

As reported by others, the 'manage contacts & more' of PC studio 3 does not work with this phone. Does anybody have any information on when and how this will be fixed? It is absolutely useless to try the Samsung websites. You either get a 'Page not found', an unscrollable window too small to enter anything into or a message in Korean.

i just got this phone yesterday and it's been everything i thought it would be. if you're wondering about memory capacity, 148 is good enough for regular use. it's not an ipod and having 20-30 songs that you like is good enough for me. camera and screen is great too. iknow they're trying to make it light but giving it a metalic case would improve the already great looking case. the vga for 3G has great resolution as well. given the size/weight, the functions are not the best but more than enough for regular day to day needs!! great job samsung !

Z540 is currently available in Singapore. Selling at around SGD800 without line. (sim free) The phone spec from Samsung SG webiste said " Privacy lock � for video, messages, images, contacts and call records" Can anyone share your experience of this "privacy lock"? i.e how it actually works? Is this something like a "secret folder" that only become visible after keying a pin? Thks.

Andrew Talked to the network development/consignmnet team at Telstra today, they (as of yet) have not looked at this phone for network approval (they currently have 27 phones in testing for final approval!). If/when they do, it will be several months in testing before it would go on sale to public, subsequently even if they do take it into testing now it wouldnt be avalible till 4th quarter (Oct-Dec) this year! Roaming on Vodafone is not an issue! I have been on Vodafone for years now and have had a variety of phones and roamed to almost all corners of the globe with them and never experienced difficulties. What I recomend you do tohough if you do switch to Vodafone is that you get your phone unlocked form thier network so if you do un into problems elsewhere you can just slip in a SIM card from wherever it is you are visiting (I do this in Nepal frequently). - Tailgunner Joe

Anyone heard anything on if/when this phone (and/or the Z560) will be released in Australia by providers other than Vodafone? (in particular, on Telstra). I'm with Telstra currently and not sure I want to switch. And I know very little about such things - but I'm told Voda network coverage isn't so hot and that globabl roaming may not be available through them (which is a big issue as the main reason I'm looking for a new phone is to have one that will work when I go on holidays to the US in July. My old phone isn't tri/quad band). Any corrections to these comments re vodafone welcomed. (oh - and I know the Z510 is almost the identical phone and is available on Telstra. I just happen to think the Z540 looks more stylish and am hoping they'll get the new model in some time soon)

Yes, I've tried to set the ringer from "menu/settings/sound settings" and also from "(hold*)/edit/" but both ways only lists the built in music, not my own. I can play my music just fine. The files are mp4 files.

Synchronising with Outlook doesn't help me - I don't use Outlook. I would like to directly manage the contacts on the phone. Seems like this won't be available, which is enough reason to ditch the phone.

Just got my Z540V from Vodafone a few days ago. Like it a lot. In answer to another correspondent, three icons on Samsung PC Studio software front screen are greyed out. Samsung UK tell me that is intentional for the Z540, but that all of the management activities for the phone can be carried out with the icons that are active. For example, synchronizing will allow transfer of Outlook data between phone and PC. Pity this was not clearer in the guide, as it would have avoded hours of re-loading the software and drivers!

I have one of this type from vodafone japan. mp3 won't play. i converted mp3 to mp4 which work fine. sounds converted to .aac will also play without problem. doc, excel and pdf files can be viewed and the said files can be drag and drop using the Samsung PC Studio Phone Explorer. I tried downloading Opera Mini but to my dismay, it returned download failure error. One big disanvantage when it comes to recieving mails or text with subject filled more than 28 charactercters, it will promt unsupported messages error and will not open the message or it can't be forwarded also which means chikka.com's MMS services will not work on this cellphone. SAD to say I'm a chikka user eversince and most of my friends out there in Philippines! 3 months now I'm not reading my chikka friends text messages. Help!!!

My bad, thought it was Vodafone only. I can fit about 25 - 30 songs on it, using quite high bitrate MP3 files. If you used lower bit rate AAC or whatever, you could probably fit twice that. Unfortunately, there's no memory can slot.

The Z540 is a Vodafone exclusive, they like having their own models. I guess it works as I went with Vodafone just to get this over the Z510 - the keypad is IMHO much nicer but otherwise, its pretty much the same. Is there any way to get a screenshot from the phone's screen (not a photo taken by the phone but a photo/shot of the actual screen when, say, at the menu)?

I moved from a Nokia 6280 to this phone and I am very impressed. The only problem is that I cannot open my contacts when connected to my computer in Samsung PC Studio. This is annoying as I want to update my contacts list but there must be a solution. Is there?

I just got one on Voda and you can play any MP3 now as a ring tone, and let me tell you they sound great through the high powered dual speakers as ring tones :-)

To be fair to Voda (for once!) - they've apparently finished the business of stopping you using your own ringtones. There was the option of using mp3 as ringtones but didn't try it (its even in the voda customised manual).

That's what you get when you go Vodafone! You should find that mp3 ringtones do not work either, Vodadone normally ensures you have to buy ringtones from them.

What a dissapointment!! Got mine last week - going back this week! It's very customised for Vodafone (UK). Right soft key in standby can not be changed from Vodafone Live. The battery (granted only after first long charge) did not last from West Wales to Hampshire (200 miles) with about 10min worth of WAP surfing and 10min calls. No ability to read .doc .xls .pdf etc. The sync with Outlook put all the contacts numbers classified as Other, and the calendar was totally wrong. Having specified to only sync the last 30 days and the next 90, it would state that it was full having synced half of 2003 and put all the notes as tasks under the day it was synced!. It also deleted some items from my PC Outlook which I am really unimpressed with! Keypad looked nice to start with, but got really greasy after a few key presses. Screen res looked good. The phone would also not sync via the USB cable unless Bluetooth was turned off. The games were all demos with links to purchase from Vodafone Live. A very dissapointing phone, now eating humble pie and going back to Nokia!!

It is a a Razr rip-off no doubt about it and as for Moto engineers being outdated well generally they don't get much right but patents and 1sts and smallests they can do. Samsung engineers also had an extra quarter to develop a thinner handset. We'll see how it performs.

SAMSUMG made a great 3G clamshell. Campared to this, the Moto V3x looks like a brick to me. Those people who say it's Razr copy must be moto fanboys. A clamshell is a clamshell, not a copy to me. Otherwise, why don't people say SE copy the candybar of Nokia or Nokia copy the slider or swivel from some Korean phones? Moto haven't gone any slimmer from V3 to V3x. Engineering wise, it's fair cause V3x is a 3G. But hey look! this Z540 is a 3G as well, and it's only 14.9mm thin. Moto engineers are already outdated.

Just seen the Z510 - very nice - but only available on O2 apparently! Does anyone know if the Z540 is made of the same nice magnesium metal or is it a plastic body? Secdondly, have the outer media keys any other functionality than controlling mp3s? Think I prefer this one for not having a swivel camera. Appears to lack the LED light strip of the 510 - never mind!!

Dr-R, Yeah the BenQ-Seimens EF81 is an alright looking phone but I still prefer the Z540. Its slightly more 'rounded' an as I�m not a fan of the ultra minimalist square look Ill stick with this. Good news about it being on the Voda UK coming soon page but like I have said before, beware...Voda UK are not good at keeping release dates!

Dr-R Good call on not getting the Nokia 6280! I was all for that phone & REALLY wanted one till I picked it up and really saw just how big it really is! I love the Z540, Im pretty sure thin phones are the way of the future (Go Moto for putting it in the hands of the common people!) Be warned though, Voda UK is TERRIBLE at keeping promises on release dates (cf: Nokia 6280; delayed for almost 5 months!) so just keep your fingers crossed on this one!

Terry, It is still unclear as to when this phone will be released to European network markets, or as a matter of fact anywhere other than Japan (although it has been roumoured that Vodafone D2 Germany has expressed an interest in the phone). It is EXPECTED to be available in European Vodafone markets by mid year (late summer) but it is up to specific networks as to what phones they sell so depends on where you live in the world and what networks you have available!

Luke, I am still 'on the fence' as it were on the Z560. I like it but it uses HSDPA which is an improvement/development on the standard UMTS/W-CDMA 3G networks making it effectively a 3.5G standard. It all depends on where you live in the world really as many different countries are deploying this technology a different time and some networks are probably not even going to adopt it at all! In the short term, I would personally go for the Z540 as it is going to be available to Vodafone and other network users really pretty soon, about mid year in Europe if the networks get their A-into-G! Then wait and see over the next year or so on how the deployment of HSDPA goes. I get my Z540 (called a 804SS here in Japan) in about a week. Ill post my opinions as soon as I get my hands on it.

Kenneth, As has already been stated in these forums, the Z540 WILL NOT be dropped from production. Its already being shipped to Japan and goes on sale here on the Vodafone K.K. (Vodafone Japan) network in mid March (expected 13th). Yes Samsung does announce huge numbers of new phones each year but many of them are made for specific markets such as Korea and Hong Kong or Taiwan and only sold there under exclusive deals with networks. Just because they dont go on sale in Europe, doesnt mean they dropped the phone from production.

Luke, I wouldnt go near the Nokia N70. I love Nokia phones, dont get me wrong but its so big, infact massive is more acurate! As for the Samsung Z510/Z540 issue, its up to you really. They are practically the same phone in technical specfications but with different designs. I personally like the Z540 design better. Furthermore, I dont really like the "roll-around" camera on the Z510 (similar to S.E v800), but its all about personal preference.

I am not a fan of the Moto RAZR or V3x for the simple reason that although it is a very thin phone when you open it up it still has the fat piece t the bottom of the phone which looks REALLY ugly. This phone is the first really thin, 3G/UMTS mobile phone that doesnt have that revolting fat part. In response to several other posts about this phone; 1. 1.3MP is fine for a mobile camera! All of you saying Samsung should include 2, 3 or more mega pix cameras...carry a decent dedicated digital camera with you! 2. This phone will NOT be cancelled as it is already in mass production in both Korea and Japan, and will go on sale in Japan on the Vodafone K.K network as the "Samsung 804SS" from mid march (See the Vodafone K.K Japan website here(page 4): After its inital launch in Japan it will then go on sale accross the Vodafone networks worldwide, starting with the European networks.

What are you talking about? The V3 is just a empty shell. It has great design, however it can't compete in functionaity with Samsung. Samsung is known for good screens (Z540 has two of them), good sound (Z540 has mp3 player with equalizer, stereo speakers and stereo headphones, amd mp3 control keys on the front). Plus you have two cameras - 1.3 mpix cam with CIF video, VGA cam, 3G, and that thin clamshell design. What could a ordinary user like u ask for?

d2 - this is a good phone! but LG is making them better these days! Nokia need to Change there Designers? The best of the best are Samsung with there screens and music, Motorola are pure quality business phone like LG mobiles. LG is a stopwatch, a converter of weight if your a gold trader- currency if your on hollidays changing currency, Photos you can edit to make larger, Videos simply stop to capture turn to a photo, Play games when your board or play music louder from the outside speakers, Record a friends voice if you have No pen to write down a number, talk about coming of age! Mobiles these days look at the 21st century. The big 3 are LG u8380 or u880, Motorola all, Samsung D600,D800 etc but thats my opinion. Most Samsungs are good! My wife has one and is ver happy.

Have you all ever heard about Samsung X610? If not, here are some facts: announced in 1Q 2004, mono-block design, 11.8 mm THIN. No success on the market, available in only few countries. However Motorola took a look at it and in 3Q 2004 released the famous Razr V3. So don't just talk around - read a little bit before you attack. And about the new Z540i, overall I think is a great phone when compared with the V3, V3i, even the V3x which I believe will not come cheap. And that cheap and old interface that Motorola still uses... However, I'm looking for an upgrade and the Z540 is in my mind, along Nokia 6270, Motorola Q and Sony Ericsson W550

Honestly this looks to me a copy!! If its a goog looking Phone I'll buy it! For those people care a lot about menu's.I have to say that who will be haning up with the phones 24 hours a day! no one its not a computer!!! comments about Motorola 's menu useless! This phone would have been a perfect phone if there is built in card slot for external memory. A 150 MB is not gonna cut it for nowadays so called media files.

Stop all this nonsense about 2Mpix. It does not make sence with the physical size of the optical parts... All you get is more thermic noise. You then need the software to smooth the picture, and ends up with a lower effective resolution... (Same stuff with compact cameras)

For a 3G phone, Samsung can use a 2 megapixels phone. So far, non of the 3G phone got 2 megapixels from Samsung yet.

Come on guys...be fair...even this phone looks like V3 but it's far much better and not too far off compares with new V3x.This's the thinnest 3G phone in the market so far(V3x is 20mm thick).Price wise,V3x is too expensive at USD777.00 and keep in mind that price of V3 has been dropping badly(from USD850 to USD300 now),I'd bet Samsung will be much cheaper when come out.Overall Samsung are always builds good quality phones,practical&afforfadle comepares with Motorola....Again to be fair...there's nothing perfect, you guys should give Samsung some credits cos at the end of the day we always comeback to Samsung.I've used 3 V3 for the last 18 months so I known how good they're.

does anyone know if 3G fuctions can be used on the 1900mhz band cuz in N-A its the only supported band for 3G as no official band has been designated. i know that the nokia 6282 does use 1900mhz for 3G but is there other phone than this one???
