Sonim XP7 - User Reviews

  • Some how my 12 year old son managed to break the XP7 screen. Still dont know how but he did it. Now its frozen and we cant get it to do anything. Plus its Saturday and cant talk to anyone at support.

  • i got the phone stuck in my ass and cant get it out. would not reccomend

  • If you want an iphone, you don't want a Sonim. My XP7 was over 5 years old when it was finally destroyed by being run over by a tracked machine. It was big, it was heavy, it had a poor camera, it sometimes locked up, and charge cables where worth a small fortune. However, at 5 years old it was still going strong, it had been stepped on multiple times, dropped in mud, water and even grease, dropped from ladders, crushed in my chest pocket, stored in pockets with keys and change, left in direct sunlight on a dash (the iphone beside it wouldn't even turn on). This phone survived everything but a 35000# machine running over it. New, I charged it once a week- literally. This past winter being outside in coat pocket and running bluetooth constantly, I still maintained three too four days per charge. #1 like- the volume! #2 the notification indicator light (fantastic feature that would allow leaving phone in "safe" place and still see from a distance that there was a missed call or message. #1 dislike- cost of charge cables and their unavailability. #2 not the best hand held mic and earphone- however 90% of my calls I used the built in handsfree mic and speaker and they where fantastic! As a tradesperson with this phone you will laugh at your coworkers as they cry about their broken screens and when they are scrambling to find a charger at the end of the day, or when they are running to another room to try to hear their phone over the jobsite noise. I would get this phone again in a heartbeat, however my carrier now has only XP8 and I am being forced to change models. If I don't like the XP8, I will be E-baying another XP7

  • If you want a fancy-schmacy new-fangled super fast phone to play the latest games or take professional pictures... this may not be for you. But if you want a tough, tough, tough phone that can survive use in a garage... this is fantastic! I've broken so many screens on my octo-core bazillion mega pixels phones (even with protective cases) that I couldn't take it anymore. This phone delivers exactly what it claims to. It's tough. I don't us it to play fancy games with. I use it for real-life, hands dirty work. I've dropped it on concrete many times. I've stepped on it with work boots. It just works. This is a second-hand phone (previous owner bought a newer model from Sonim) and I'm not paid by Somin in any way. Mechanics, carpenters, tradesmen in general... you need a Sonim. I love it! That's my opinion.

  • absolute piece of junk! slow! slow! and slow! locks up constantly! small screen! pre-loaded eavesdropping apps! and to think that this 'phone" cost a thousand dollars????? do not waste your hard earned money on this p.o.s! next!

  • 100% agree. Extremely slow

  • Sorry but this is the slowest loading phone I've ever had, really annoying!!

  • You are both wrong... It is a speaker. A very LOUD speaker.

  • No that's an antenna not a microphone (sticking out at the top right), you'd usually find them in phones from the 1990's to as late as 2005, so seeing one in a 2015 Android smartphone is just plain weird.

  • Is a microphone

  • Toughest phone I've ever had. Drop it on concrete, in water, play catch and miss, bite it and it carries on

  • Oh what the hell? Why is there an antenna sticking out of the phone?? IN 2015?! ARE YOU ******* KIDDING ME????!!!!

  • I bought this phone in March 2017. The battery is pretty good, a full charge with ONLY texts/calls I've got 11 days out of a single charge With HEAVY USE (on it all day) I only get 3 days out of it which sucks but still better than my Samsung for battery life. Pros: battery, Definitely holds up to not breaking the screen. I've thrown my phone off while horseback riding into the sand, I've dropped it accidentally while riding, I've dropped it onto many different hard surfaces and so far not shattered. I've got scratches which are to be expected with how rough I am with the phone. Cons: rear camera works pretty well if well-lit. The front is mostly good too with good light. Software glitches OFTEN. I've fought this problem since buying the phone, I just am not willing to ship it off for them to factory reset and send back which I've had to factory reset it myself a few times. Overall, I do like the phone for basic needs: Texts, calls, music (spotify) and messager

  • Worst phone I've ever had! Slow, Locks up continuously, poor camera quality on and on and on... Will not have another one. Going back to iPhone.

  • It's easy to describe this phone. I have tried all the roughest phones that have been made, but this is undeniably the best. It has got a couple of times locked, but it must be expected when it gets so rough used. Filming under ice, in the air from 30000 feet. Lost in water / soil. Lost down from 20 meters high from mountain side right in stone. works perfectly in -40 C. It survives, you have very good battery, probably the best on the market. But it's not a phone for a player, it works best for extreme use. But also for active craftsmen. And if you're tired of buying a new phone because the big phone manufacturers are going to trick you and buy that shit as they make and earn extreme sums on garbage phones, yes, you switch to Sonim

  • We have about 80 sonims in our business Mainly used for the Maintenance teams, dust, iron filing, wet and salty conditions Good points 1) Battery is long, up to a week dependent on what you are doing 2) Durable, 1 dead from internal failure, two being dropped and left too long in the ocean. 3) repair service is good 4) Solid, durable phone (functional in the best sense) Problems {please note, some of seem to specific to areas and not to the phone} All Maintenance Teams had Blackberries before First, some people love them, they do exactly what they want People who have being using higher end phones..........etc., etc 1) Complaints about dropping calls ( maybe location based, we are spread out from cities to remote locations) 2) Complaints about call quality Some users say no problems others say: My Sonim seems to have poor sound quality from the receivers end as I get complaints all the time about people not being able to hear me where I can hear them just fine. 3) Encryption has caused a slowdown (security policy of company requires encryption) User opinion: I was curious if you had any other employees that have performance issue with their Sonim phones after the encryption process. Mine regularly is having programs freeze or taking a long time to the point my screen saver will come on. However, I’d like to add this phones is tough as nails !! other than the sluggish processor ( even new ) I have been able to use it in the rain and battery life is about 5 days with airplane mode on !! 3) We notice the update function no longer works 4) Sonim does need to update the internal hardware, it is pokey. It needs to more memory and a OS upgrade ( current is 5.1) 5) There are complaints that the Camera quality is not sufficient. A lot of trades people are taking picture of serial numbers/labels, etc. I have not had time to test this 6) Complaints about size ie not fitting in bike shorts when on call during weekends. I was going to suggest a sporran.... Thanks

  • Sonims come unlocked from factory

  • I'm with Bell and have a Kyocera duraforce rugged for 2 yrs now and am happy with it

  • I have had my Sonim XP7 for nearly 2 years. This is my first smart phone. Here is what I like about it: I work outdoors. I operate forestry equipment and do mechanic work. The phone is very rugged and I only have to charge it a few times a week. I don't have to worry about dropping it or getting it wet. Here is what I don't like about it: I bought it through eBay, and Sonimtech will not repair it - period, since I did not buy it from an authorized dealer. The bluetooth range on my phone is less than two feet. Since the bluetooth was not functional, I leaned heavily on using the audio port. The audio port cover is a small flexible plastic cover. It was just a few months before the flexible bluetooth cover broke off, which, given it's design is inevitable. At that point the phone was no longer waterproof. Another problem is the microphone sound quality. People who I call are constantly telling me that I am fading in and out as I'm talking, and I know it's not my carrier. My advice is to buy your XP7 from a dealer so you can get support, and if your bluetooth isn't working right you can at least get it repaired.

  • My Sonim XP7700 Review I work and play hard with many stupid choices peppered in between. I was destroying upwards of four phones a year due to impact, water, dust and all the other hazards exposed when working and living life to the fullest as an outdoor/working good ole Alberta boy. Unlike my teenage daughter and her snowflake metrose.ual male peers who wouldn't know a wrench from a hammer and will probably never learn to drive because it's too scary, I am a full grown Gen X male and use my cell phone for typical communications (call, text, email) and the odd picture or film clip. I've never taken a selfie and if I ever do it will be to send a picture of my leg caught up in a piece of machinery so EMS can send the right equipment for extraction. (The Sonim has a red emergency button on the side for lone workers/adventurers to call for help) I could care less about kids stuff like apps, games, and music or how many nanoseconds it takes to switch between applications. Over the past 8 months I have dropped my Sonim in a river in the back country, had it swept up by a street sweeper and emptied into a dump truck where I had to sift through the dirt with a shovel to find it and dropped it on the concrete shop floor at least 50 times. Not a scratch. Recently, I accidentally left it on the hood of the truck (ironically placed there for 'safe keeping') and when done working on a piece of equipment I drove off. I heard it hit the ground when I turned through a busy intersection but I had no idea what it was. It took at least another 20 minutes of driving before it dawned on me it was the bleeping phone. I drove back to the intersection expecting that after 45 minutes in steady traffic, to sweep up the pieces if lucky and know the phone's fate rather than some passerby scooping it up. Well, the phone was there. I ran out and halted traffic. The belt clip it was holstered in was obliterated. The phone had clearly been driven over more than once and there were pock marks on the rubber back but other than a tiny cracked screen that covers the camera lens on the back everything worked fine. Even the front screen itself wasn't damaged and I'm still using it to this day. I don't have to buy special texting gloves. I can wear normal working gloves covered in grime or when it's cold out and still navigate the screen. Those gloves can be dirty and I don't worry about scratching or staining the screen. I can drop the phone in the barn then clean it off in a running sink with a scrub brush or take it in the shower with me when really multi tasking and still use the speaker phone over the noise for clear and crisp conversations. The battery never goes dead ever, even after a week in the back country. I've admittedly even used the phone as a handy little hammer to tap in or out the odd wood dowel or seized roll pin and as a paperweight when a blueprint or service manual is spread across the hood of a truck. The phone is heavy and feels right to a guy like me. Kinda like the difference between a heavy rugged Q-Tip and the lighter weight Chinese generic version where they skimp on the cotton and the shaft buckles at the slightest pressure. Some folks here seem to think they can buy an egg of a phone and if they just put it in an otter box it's somehow now on par with the Sonim. Not even close. All my previously destroyed phones had otter cases. In summary, if you're the type who showers when you get up rather than before going to bed then you probably will find this phone too heavy, too slow, the screen too small with too few pixels and any phone marketed to preteen girls is probably more suited for you. An Otter Box is sufficient for you for the odd time your phone gets knocked off the table while sipping cappuccinos at Starbucks. However, this phone is for you if you are the type who is more of a real life participant then sim life or life observer.

  • I can't believe the negative comments about the Sonim 7700 on this forum. This thing just works. It has tremendous battery life, is waterproof and is insanely rugged. I've never had a problem with any downloaded app (unless it was just a crappy app) . One comment on this forum suggested a Samsung 5 in an Otter Box is tougher. I highly doubt. You can literally pound nails with a Sonim. Hard of hearing? You can hear this sucker ring half a city block away.I got turned on to Sonim after complaining to my local Rogers rep that I kept cracking the screens on my iphone. I'm not super hard on my phones, but after 3 screen replacements I'd had enough. Yeah it's big and bulky, but that's a pretty small trade off for 5 days of battery life between charges. I would highly recommend this device.

  • The phone is slow. Waiting for the mail app to load and search is painfull. This phone is supplied by my employer because it's tough. If your job requires any technology. Don't buy it. I'm coming from a Note 3 and hated that but wish I had it back. That was a tough phone as well.

  • I have thrown this phone, left it in the rain for a period of 12 hours dropped it above height specifications and it still works flawlessly. I have intentionally dropped this phone onto asphalt screen down and have broken the screen and it was back within a week looking brand new no questions asked. If some previously mentioned it's a horrible warranty maybe you should switch carriers and not blame the manufacturer. The battery is amazing and lasts double if not more than any other phone on the market. I can do a week on a charge. This is a active duty phone that will take most abuse not intended for an individual that needs to boast about the latest technology and features they will probably never really use, or the Facebook Instagram gaming scene. This phone is made accordingly to provide a rugged phone in tough conditons for communication purposes with an exceptional warranty without paying for additional. The functionality and purpose serves flawlessly for what the design is. Love it.

  • Terrible! No customer service. Even though my phone is still under warranty U can't get service. Android version is it if date and phone won't update. Terrible. 1/5 stars. Camera crapped out within the first six months. Again, no help from sonim or my cell provider. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE

  • My workplace recently switched to this from iphone. It was not a good decision. The phone is slow. I've hit the red hang up button on a call before with the screen clearing (looking as if call ended) only to hear slight noises and find the call was still active despite looking cleared from my end. It's slow for pretty much everything. I find the battery lasts between 24-48 hours with average use. I require the phone for taking pictures. This thing is horrendous compared to the iphone it replaced. It could be a sunny day outside and the picture still comes out blurry and washed out looking. I've had a lot more complaints from people on the other end of phone calls regarding the quality of my voice. Considering the size of this thing, I would've hoped for something that felt s but more modern. This honestly feels like a smartphone from 2008. If you plan on getting this, for employees that you actually like, really give it a good test first.

  • Sonim customer service isn't. The phone is tough but the Samsung s5 with the Otter case is tougher. phone is slow and freezes often. Screen cracked 2nd day. Bluetooth headset is put on loudspeaker by default and cannot be corrected. Small screen. Battery life is good. DO NOT BUY

  • I looked forward to this phone for 4 years and finally purchased it. Total Disappointment Battery life is minimal, locks up frequently and is very slow. also GPS reception sucks

  • I've had this phone two years now. Best rugged phone ever. Battery still goes 4-6 days without a charge. I've never allowed the software to update and have zero call problems. Occasionally the icons disappear and a reboot fixes this. It is meant to make calls and take abuse and that it does. My contract is up and I will definitely go for another even though it works perfect. Its not a fluffy phone with gadgets so don't expect that. Great phone.

  • I have to wonder about this phone on todays market. We are looking at it from Bell.ca for our in the field mechanics etc. 1gb ram and it looks like it wont get updated to Android 6.x let alone 7.x while it works ok now, I really doubt it will have enough of a future to invest in. My vote is to pass on this device, and Bell has no other tough smart phones. looking at other providers now.....

  • Rugged phone. Used by our company as main corporate phone. Came with Android 4.4, recently upgraded to 5.1.1. Was working fine for 4 months, now loses LTE signal every other call and shuts off antenna. Phone requires rebooting in order to make calls, receive text messages, or update emails. Solid construction, as long as you don't need it for call, text, or email.

  • could be thickness of the glass. gg2 way cheaper than gg4 but if it's thick enough could be as good as thin gg4 on high end phones. ie samsung goes to extremes to be light and thin.

  • might be something up with your phone. My s5 never made it more than 8hrs (usually 6) but on the xp7 i'm going 4 and five days with the same usage as as was on the s5. Possibly an app issue. EG. I ran avast anti theft on the s5 and after one particular update avast sucked my battery dry in under an hour.

  • Further to my last review on the Sonim XP7 I tried using the phon with thinsulate gloves and the screen react at all. I can only use this phone within wearing gloves.

  • Had the phone for several weeks now and happy overall although the battery life is nothing special at all and it must be charged every day. The battery is actually worse than my Sony Z Ultra phone with a 6+ inch screen. Please don't believe the reviews about long battery life, I noticed it wont last much more than 12 hours with light Internet and talk use; my Sony surpasses it on battery life with much heavier usage. Im seriously considering getting the external battery back up pack from Sonim but at 100 pounds sterling / 129 USD it's not cheap. Not sure what all the fuss is about the screen, it's better than I expected and perfectly adequate. I've dropped the phone once face down and it survived but its too early to say how rugged it is but I feel more comfortable with it in than my Sony as I've broken and replaced the screen on it many times so hope the XP7 fairs better. The XP7 certainly feels rugged and I'm sure it will be waterproof; it's weight in the pocket or hand held is fine. I like the design also. If you don't buy this phone from Sonim or one of their official partners then the 3 year warranty is null and void which is a real concern for such an expensive and rare phone. I'm concerned about whom I could rely upon to fix this phone if something goes wrong and noticed the replacement screens are very expensive.

  • Great looking, super battery capacity and rugged as h..... The problems lies within.. The os is not stable. My first XP7 deleted al icons from time to time, and restarted itself. My second one was a bit more stable, but still restarts wihtout warning.

  • Why would you say its a junk - what were you using it for?

  • Total junk and waist of money. Do not buy this phone. Customer support is worthless as well. They do nothing. Almost 8 months dealing with support and absolutely nothing from them

  • Does the Hot Spot work yet?

  • Great phone except... completely incapable of playing Pokemon GO(with my kids I swear lol). The WiFi hotspot has not worked for over a year and Sonim only promises a fix soon. It was a known issue 13 months ago on the MTS network. Poor response by the manufacturer in issuing the repair will be the nail in the coffin for this phone. I really used to like it too...

  • Best device in the world.

  • $850 fully unlocked

  • Beautiful likkle toy, how much would go for?

  • Use this phone.normal use like phone call and message 2 days battery 77%.this phone like powerbank.sound and signal very good.try use in heavy use for call and message sometimes browser a day just 20% damn battery.calling 1hours just 2% drain.

  • Phone isn't perfect, it did out itself since time, but reception is better than anything I have ever used, the battery is mighty fine and the call sound is good. Bad camera, screen is quite old generation and multitasking get the phone to freeze rather easily. Their customer service is plenty bad. Other than that, I like the phone for its battery and good signal.

  • Has anyone had experience with the NFC Reader in it?

  • Super expesnive in my country in Slovakia cost 949 euro. How this rugger phone can have gorrila glass 2 if many others even cheap phones have at least gorrila glass 3 or 4. Also 4.4.2 kitkat is outdated.

  • Rogers has this phone for $199.99 on 2 yr premium term or $749.99 no term

  • Pretty handy rugged phone. Problems are my pictures lock out and I can't find them. Phone alters itself periodically. Changes format so to speak. Miss many calls and notifications. Do get awesome reception and battery life. I like the size it is perfect for my hands. The rep told me to send it to Rogers. .. fat chance. I'll never see it again.

  • Worth every penny, not the most comfortable phone, quite heavy too but the battery on this thing is insane. How is it even possible from Friday morning to Monday 3 pm heavy use and still 20 % juice left. I am amazed.

  • The battery is amazing and the prosesor is better than I thought, the size though is another story, this is the biggest 4 inch display phone every. Heavy and big but man its ruggrd, I have it with me when I hunt and the GPS is better Nokias, 11 hours gps and screen on, no other phone on the planet can do that. Only thing we don't like is the stif buttons. My fingers hurt :)

  • 2 places you can buy it unlocked. Kickmobiles UK 999$ and than in Finland for the same price. I have used the phone for 5 months and the battery still does good 3-days of heavy use. The signal is great, the Sonin customer service if really rubbish, so if you brake it you better have pun insurance because Sonim dies all possible to not get you one and even if you get replacement it will be refurbished equipment not a new one, this is my experience so far. Too overpriced for what you get but still I need to have the toughest so I do.

  • The phone is fantastic. I don't work in a rugged job, tho do work and play outside, a lot. The phone can take a beating. It has ample internal storage space, unless you want a zillion tunes and games on it. One of the most heavily-used features of any phone I own is the GPS, and this one is excellent. I also have a real GPS when i need it...Mine is from the indiegoago campaign, all black, unlocke, called the Extreme. No retailer seems to have many now of the regular yellow and black ones. I'm expecting a new model this fall or winter...fits in my pocket and I'm only 110 pounds :)

  • It really does reach 103 dB. My "old" XP3300 also did. When working at a live concert i can hear my phone ringing. :-)

  • Rogers has it too

  • Does this phone speakers really reaches the 103dB that its datasheet claims? If it is true this phone would be 20dB higher than any of the phones tested by GSMARENA. I would love to see a speaker test from GSMARENA for this phone to see if this is true or just marketing.

  • Can it be purchased unlocked?

  • telus has it

  • Am using Sonim Land Rover A8 fone... awesome and i love using it... really want to have this Sonim XP7

  • Am using Sonim Landrover A8 fone... yes really water resist... I want to have this Sonim XP7.

  • Anyone know when this phone will be released in Canada? And can it be purchased for regular, someone had mentioned it's only for business customers but not sure if its true.

  • Wait for upcoming samsung galaxy xcover 3

  • Where can I buy that XP7??? The dealer mentioned on the Sonim homepage do not have it! Some of them even don't exist at all!

  • So so so want this gadget to complete my life! But still have to wait when it touchdown indonesia market.. mean while I got LandRover O2/Maxtron rugged smartphone to be my partner ;)

  • 20.8 is thicknes btw...

  • I really hopes the casing is oil prof. I have/had an XP3, fantasic phone, still works after a lot of water, snow, fibreglass dust, .....but looks like it has dreadlocks because all casing rubber has been distroyed by oil.

  • when it will be available to philliphines ? can't wait this phone to be in my own hands ;/ !

  • 20.9mm seriously....??? no pockets can hold that

  • Nija Turtles phone? Lol

  • Sonim xp7 Radio

  • oh yeah walkie-talkie

  • What a shame, another great phone ruined by unnecesarry compromises. In this case, sd slot. Useless without it.

  • I thought this was funny when I first looked at the specs - not anymore! Yes, it does look much like the phones from 2008. But... - it's 4G! - it's got best-in-class water resistance! - looks strong as a brick! - got an FM radio... - and a HUGE 4800 mAh battery. That's it's best selling feature. Actually, this is a phone for WORKING people. You take this baby to places where you won't have anywhere to charge it, where it might be raining, when you need something you can TRUST. Unique piece of equipment...

  • it should be a satellite phone. otherwise don't bother.

  • Is this a walkie-talkie???????????

  • is it intrinsically safe so that i can use it in oil refinery n other hazardous areas.

  • i want this to be my next phone, how much is it in the philippines?

  • Lol...

  • 4800 battery dammmm so much juice for days lol

  • more like power ranger phone xD

  • Ninja Turtles phone =)
