I had this phone for 3 years or so, maybe 4. Cost me about 350 euro if I'm not mistaken. I loved it and it never broke on me, but the headset you had to use since there was no headphone jack broke like 4 times because I used it as my main music player.

Hi to all! Sony Ericsson W850i can support memory card of 8Gb capacity. I successfully added 8Gb micro sd card memory with a memory stick pro duo adapter and it works like a charm! This mobile phone is a brute of a phone! All the basics covered including the infra red which is a rarity these days and in true sony walkman class! It may seem to many to be a period piece but i beg to differ. In this day and age where costly androids galore with less than half a day battery worth this one has a battery stamina of a great champion. Battery lasts a good 3 days of moderate 2 hours usage paired with a blue tooth headset device. A mobile device is as good as its battery ... i can't agree more.

This was my first ever phone that I bought with all passion (to gift it to my GF and I gifted she felt very happy and respected it the way I do, and I still have it :-) ) this was long back in the year 2007 during that time Walkman phones from SE were symbol of MUSIC lovers, after this one I bought many SE phones W700, C902, K850, Xpreria X10 (I still have all of them :-) yep in working condition) all these phones have set a trend in the market where competitors were busy trying to impress with phone models and features just to put on their specifications but are not worth experiencing, now best points about SE W850 are 1. Its ROCK SOLID 2. Walkman is easily accessible 3. Camera quality is too good (Yep I agree autofocus would've been an added advantage now comeon SE has a clear 2 seperate segments to concentrate on music and pictures - Walkman and Cybershot phones). Anyways the only 1 other thing what I have observed in SE walkman phones when compared to other music phones is battery backup but this is what I say 'whats the use of basket full of apples when they are not tasty' this is what happened in earlier days (non-android days) with other brands, they had every feature what SE has infact more than that but to what extent is the user delighted with these features ? I am not saying this just because am a big fan of SE but I have closely observed other phones and their users too. Anyways users like me will definitely miss those old SE phones. Now its all ANDROID, ANDROID and ANDROID ofcourse before SE released its first ANDROID phone I was afraid if it was not actually adopting google's O/S like other brands especially Nokia but thanks to SE's panel members who made their minds to move away from their proprietery O/S to Android which is a huge hit ofcourse SAMSUNG is ruling the market but the next best thing is SE and Nokia I really feel pity as they were market kings once upon a time now no one goes for them I mean atleast users who want a phone more than just to talk.

this phone is great i use this for almost 4years... it only start blank screen when i play the slider back and forth... i change the flex but a couple of month later it happen again... and i notice the secret of it... you wanna know ok i till you for free info... when your going to replace the broke flex with a new one you should put first masking tape on both side of the flex you are installing... after that put it on the unit ... i till you your cellphone will gonna last long than you use before ... that proven because I already do that...:-)

My W850 also started showing the same symptoms recently. The BACK, CANCEL and SHORTCUT buttons stopped functioning intermittently 1-2 weeks ago. Today, the normal speaker stopped functioning. I have to use speakerphone every time in order to hear what the other person is saying. Anyone facing similar issues? Any advice... please?

that isnthe exact phone i am currently using. its got everything u need on a mobile, though not touch sensitive. the woes about it is that at some particular point in time u MIGHT witness such things as "white screen" which would necessarily need some flashing to reinitialize its memory. but belief me dear prospective buyer that u gonna WORSHIP the phone. this is my third year usage of it and i've encountered problems just 3 times. if music is ur passion then, u've got the right choice of phone. BUY THAT PHONE IT SUITS UR NEEDS.

It's connection wire (display to keypad) or the circuit is usually the culprit. Happened to mine almost a year back kept going white then black etc... had to give it to the service center to get it fixed.It was cheap but well worth it, now looks like the battery is dying off age because it keeps going off even at full charge within few minutes.It has been doing great since like 4-5 years+.Might need to change the battery and store as a backup phone :( One of the best phones ever, rock solid with more than expected performance for its time.

Hi all, I just want some advice regarding this phone. I used one of these, which now sleeps in it's box in my drawer. Anyway I just want some help because when I turn it on, the screen comes white and then goes black, and than white again, and than black again and keep going on like this until eventually the battery is dead. And to start browsing, Denos can push the menu button, then click the internet icon (2nd column, 1st row). then push the MORE button (right), then choose GoTO) enter address ohhh.. u need to set up your sim card first to start browsing

The "Strip" of your mobile phone is probably damaged. Fixing the problem is very much possible. Just take the cellphone to some mobile repairer and he'll fix the strip and if necessary e1 the display.

For the first time in 4 years, I managed to update my phone for SE Updat Centre and downloaded 32Mb of data. Phone now working great and it accepts my 4Gb Pro Duo card. Before it would fail to read it after about 5 mins. Still a great phone! Have bought a new Nokia N96 (yeah it's old but a genuine Nokia and brand new with 2yr warantee) so it will be my first Nokia in 6 years. I can't use a touchscreen with my job as I can only use 1 hand whilst I work with my other so a regular phone with keypads is my only option Most of the new phones are therefore useless to me. I will still keep my 850i as a backup phone 'cos its so reliable!

I had this phone for more than 3 years, and here's what I think of it : phone is well built, I have dropped it several times, on different kind of floors, sometimes while it was slided out even, and all what I suffer is sometimes i receive a message stating that SIM Card not in place. So to resolve this, I had to open the back cover and slide back the SIM card. Recently, I discovered that my phone dial numbers by ITSELF!!! I find this quite normal, bearing in mind the few times I dropped this mobile. The Track ID feature is quite handy, I downloaded more than 40 songs using that feature "Using my PC" Conclusion : the SE W850 is absolutely fun to have, but now I'm thinking seriously into getting the Nokia C3 type and touch, As I'm suffering V.Bad call quality from the SE W850

Hi Jon. As the others have said, the ribbon most likely getting buggered. I have kept my phone open all the time by using rubber bands, was thinking of super gluing it open, but it can be fixed. Was quoted a fair price by a backdoor repairer, but I will live with it for the time being. My charging port is also kept on the phone with a rubber band, but it's been charged about 3000 times. Fault is with the charger. My phone doesn't read some memory cards (duo pro, especially 4Gig)and have never been able to connect to internet as a modem. Don't know why computer (XP) doesn't recognise it. It's never really bothered me though. Don't know if there is an update on the web to accept 4Gig cards.

I've just started using this phone. It belonged to my brother previously. It is easily 3 years old. But tell you guys what, this phone is GOOD. I was using a Nokia prior to this but I'm beginning to like Sony ericsson phones because of w850i. It has an animated screen display. User friendly. Great features. I like how it slides to reveal the keypad. I have not encountered any problems so far. I think i'll be using this phone for much longer than I expected.

Phone about 4 years old now. Still works good. Battery losing some power and centre joy-stick button cracked, but it has worked hard. Plays music especially on headphones with good clear sound. I'm a SE fan and was my second SE product. Waiting for Satio / Aino or X10 mini pro to replace it. Recomended as a reliable hard working phone!

Simply love this phone! Have used it for almost 4 years now and the ONLY downside I really have found is the lack of autofocus on the camera. Seriously! I've had it on repair twice though, and one of the buttons above the screen don't work. But I don't mind it since the software is simple and simply amazing. I miss the old Sony Ericsson software. It was much better than the newer versions. Oh yeah, it don't have any GPS. Kind of meh, but I survive without it..

I've had this phone for almost 3 years and it's only recently broke down permanently. It didn't really have many problems, but one of the things which really irked me was that the screen wouldn't appear sometimes (it'd just go black). In addition, the phone sometimes just switched off by itself somehow, regardless of how much battery was left. It's a great phone, though. Loudspeaker is pretty good, and it's easy to use. It's a bit heavier than other slide phones, but really, most of the features are quite nice. I'm a bit sad not to be able to use mine anymore, but hey, it's time I moved on!

I have SO MUCH love for this phone. It's served me well for three years...unfortunately it's playing up at bit now (freezing and turning itself off) but then what do you expect for a phone that has been used all day every day for the last three years? It's been a brilliant phone and I would recommend it to anybody who wants a cheap phone of they can find it still on the market.

i have had this phone way back in college. i strongly say that it's a great cool phone. when you have it you'll never get bored. music playing is awesome whether played in speakers or in headphones. camera is fair enough knowing it's a music phone. net speed is good, i can even use it as a modem and have it connected on my PC. but in my case, the rubber base pad of my navigation keys got cracked and breaks on it. and my screen turned white suddenly. i took to customer care and it's a flex issue the usual. not a problem at all because i'm willing to spend as much as 1500 just for this phone to get fixed. im in the phils. anyway i'm really excited to used my phone again. it's a great eye catcher .. . . hahaha. and this time i will take good care of it...

i have this phone now for about 3 years and it is a very good phone i ve droped it a couple of times but nothing happened not even scratches,,, the music player is awsone it is far more better than all the music devices i ve used the battery is great when i first bought it the battery lasts for about 3 days and after 3 years it can reach 2 days without charging i ve not used it to connect to the internet except a couple of times so i have nothing to say about this i ve never send it to maintance the camera is a bit low with only 2 mega pixel but it is better than other 2 mega pixel phone cameras i am very satsfied with it i am gonna buy another phone but i am gonna keep my W850 .

I been using this phone for over three years now, I bought it when it very first came out. The phone is amazing, I use it for browsing and e-mails through Opera mini and I'm impressed that everyday this phone have something to offer me, I use it as a pleasure and business phone and it didn't disappoint me on both aspects. I'm a very abusive user, I use any device constantly and I drop it hundreds of times, and I even submerged it in water by accident. The first time I had a problem with it was this week the internal mic broke because of humidity ( I live in a very humid area of the world) and the flex broke and I replaced it and overall after spending 3 hours in the repair shop, my phone is working again like it is brand new! I'm very satisfied with it, to the point I can't even part ways with it though I was offered a lot of newer models with more features! Even if it broke down this week but considering that it lasted over three years with a user like me, is considered a miracle by itself! (Most Nokia N series phones didn't handle me for a month even when used as secondary phones!) I'm planning to wait till the X2 is released in my country and even will use it over another phone line beside my trusty W850i, I wouldn't ever let it go till it stop working one day and it is impossible to fix it! My man now wants Sony Ericsson after being a die hard Nokia user!! SE for LIFE!

Im told that if I replace the ribbon my smses will be gone forever. Im A sentimentalist and dont want to lose my messages. So is it true that if I replace the ribbon my messages will be lost? hi all, i am interesting to buy w960i phone in few coming days, at GSMARENA's site it's price is only € 180 but in italy where i live it's price is 249€... :-( unfortunately italy is too expensive country than other european countries.. at moment i am using W850i i have some problems from this phone that it can not not store more than 800 SMS and the other one is that i can not send SMS by typing my KEY BOARD after connecting it to pc.. becoz this phone's software does not has a feature like that... but nokia provides this option to send sms by pc from mobiles but i do not like nokia phones becoz they are too too slow now i would like to buy W960i plz plz plz anyone tell me how many sms it can store or can i copy my sms in memory card.............????? please inform me SE users i am waiting for your reply thanks a lot in advance......

piece of advice, don't let the phone memory store too much info, delete old messages from time to time or old pics and videos. or better store them on the card. i got mine repaired twice because it shuts off and can't be turned on, youll only see a white light when you press on. the repair guy said it's because the program was damaged because of too much phone memory.

Yeah you can select eitha 3G or GSM or both. If you do select both it just means the 3G symbol will disapear from your screen when your out of 3G coverage. Your phone will automaticly find the closest GSM signal. Hope that helps.

I've had this phone around 2 1/2 years now. Its fantastic, never broken, turned itself off, or any other problems. Have dropped it etc and still no damage. Battery life is still fantastic, as are speakers and camera Gets a bit slow when reading through old text's (I'm talking like a year ago text messages). TIP: The camera can get pretty dusty, use a cotton bud every now and again to clean it. Best phone by far I've ever had. Want to get a new phone just for an upgrade though, but am finding it difficult to let go as its so reliable, and most newer phones don't seem to be. If any one has any recomendations it would be greatly appreciated! Cheers in advance guys!

for youre problems,, thers a simple solution,, 1.if youre phone gets slow,, for sure you havent UPDATED youre firmware of youre phone, go to www. sony ericsson.com/support dowload the software updater fron youre computer install it & update youre phone follow the simple instructions,, 2.about youre charger connector,, get a pencil eraser & rub it on the connector, do not use other tings specially metal it will damage the connector & short circuit youre phone,, for safety, turn off youre phone before doing it,, rub it with the pencil eraser until the corrosion on the connector are remove, it will be better if you choose soft eraser,,

What a piece of phone. Had mine 2 years and like everyone says it has an amazing sound quality, very clear and loud. Lovin da mega bass etc. Pictures and video are great. No complaints. A strong and robust reliable phone. Yep a little on the thick side but maybe thats why it has such impressive dropability resistance ratings. A must have phone, newer ones can't touch it. Previously had a K680i but happy with W850i for some time yet. No need for an upgrade!!!

Ive got one of these and like it alot! i'm quite into the radio feature because the speaker is SO loud! perfect in the park or just chillin in need of tunes. battery lifes spot on and so is the screen quality. takes a good pic but sadly its getting to the back of the bus with s500's and w580i's coming out. hmmmm w850 and w580???? they look similar in name get a bit more creative SE.

The phone's built is horrible.The directional pad tends to crack,as seen in many cases.And after less than 2 years of usage it has become very very unresponsive.This is a huge disappointment from sony considering the fact that the features of the phone were reasonable.

my advice,, go for thw w850i because it has a large screen, excellent music player, mega bass equalizer, also photo light led for night shots pictures, also you can use that as a flash light,, also you can view pictures & watch videos in landscape modes,, also you can also zoom pictures and videos while viewing witch you cannot do in z610i,, you also have larger screen

I use to have that same problem before but I kinda figured it out... To zoom it in: Click on the camera button (located on the lower right side)then, Press the #6 keypad to enlarge & #3 keypad to return its original size. **zoom is up to 2.5X You can press also O for other shortcuts or help.

hey.. this fone is great but i have some concers, while in standby mode, the left and rights keys must have menu like other SE fones,, but mine has only the word "TICKER" which is unfunctional during standby mode.. and also the camera... "zoom is not possible in this mode" - said the fone, if it is in 2MP or 1MP cam mode.. but in VGA and VIDEO MODE.. zoom is possible.. can anyone there help me figure out d problem? plz?

Had the phone for 2 years and it is still working great. Dropped it plenty of times (carpet) and even used the music player in the shower and it can endure this. Music player easy and nice with preloaded playlist. Music speaker is loud and clear (almost equals earphone quality but louder). Picture quality isnt super clear but its more of a walkman phone. Phone is quite old for a modern user who wants wifi and touchscreen which this phone doesnt have. Going to upgrade to a G900 wish me luck.

Woa. 2 years. I never had phone as this. Kinda easy ge boring. But i stil with my w850 while most of my friend has change their phone. The sounds is d best, even the new n5800 cant beat my w850. The sounds more clear n crisp. Bass is powerful. Overpass ipod imo. Ipod cant use bluetooth stereo. Pair this phone with motorola rokr tipe s bluetooth (advertise by beckham), and believe me: you'll bcome a new dj! Using this for modem is a piece of cake.always with me when browsing. No need pcmcia. The cons is, d crack dpad, not impresive screen(even w810 brighter than this), and awful video playback. But never mind, i never think want to sell it even i buy a new phone. No big regret buying this'

This phone is truly my soulmate. in the late of january 2007, i was so ready to buy motorola razr v3x, but in the very same day, God made me open GSMarena, and there I saw w850 for the very first time and fell in love with it. So i bought it. Yes, the D-Pad cracks. Yes, i have to fix the display twice because it's blanking.And yes, the price drops tremendously. But i never have any doubt about the sound quality. it's here beside me when i'm posting this opinion. With 1 GB inside, i can contain many videos, mostly porns, and what else i could ask for...a perfect partner in crime. I dont need that camera shit, i have Canon 40D.

Ive bin using this phone 4 3years now and i havent had a days problems the top key pad has a small crack it got wet fell a few times and it just keeps going! Honestly if u want a great phone with a good cam great sound good texting got mine with 2gig card al i can say is get it u wont regret it. i have had my w850i since almost the very 1st day it was released. i have carried it everywhere with me and it is always turned on. it still works fine for me but freezes when performing alot of operations every so often, once every 60 days probly, so i just turn it off and on again when that happens and it works fine again. great phone really :)

I've had this phone since it has been released. There have been some good and bad experiences. The control pad will crack after a few months if you aren't careful when handling it. Currently the phone is not working, I do not know if it's the battery or the phone itself (which is cause for concern as the phone isn't even that old). However, This walkman is one of the best that I've ever owned, and I've owned a few.

the 2mega pixel camera of this phone was just fine,, the pictures taken from this phone apear more clearer and more natural than other cellphones in its class,, although it lacks auto focus,, the only weakness of this phone was its video,, it only records on QCIF format,, it is not as sharp as the N70,, but otherwise it is a awesome phone,, not to mention an replace for youre IPOD

I am using Sony Ericsson for about 18 months and from my experience is one of the best form Walkman Series! It came with a memory card of 1 GB which proved to be excellent and it works very, very well with the phone. The music soft is wonderful, also the headphones. The picture are okay, but I can do zoom only in VGA mode. The slide system is one of the gretest (I cannot say the same thing about Nokia N80 slide...). During 1 year and a half I had no software or any kind of problem with this phone. The battery lasts 5-6 days if you are not listening to music or using internet. With music and internet it lives at least 3 days. My grade is 9,50/10,00.

i have had this phone since christmas 2007 and it has been in for repair 3 times and i have had two different handsets. the first time my screen kept flasing and my messages were deleting themselves. the second the screen wouldnt work, it was turned on but i could see anything. i have been into the shop that many times they have offered me a new handset all together. thanks god! i do not recommend this phone at all

At first i wasted my money on n73. Very poor battery life as i always travel a lot. Man, if i had a travel charger, where the hell should i plug it on..so i traded it with the seW850. Like everyone, i read the complaints and discouraging criticsm..but i bought it. It works very well UNDER GOOD CARE.. there is no cracks or what so ever complain that u guys said. Hello.before I got the w850i,i was expecting get the n73.but i didnt get him in the market so i just got the SE w850i and i liked him vry much.Good screen display,a walkman very convincing(except the wider stereo who is not so good ),a good radio quality whith rds,trackID function who success 7/10,navigating on internet became a game,quite good photo quality,etc.the single thing i didnt appreciate is the video quality.with a 2.0 megapixels apn,it was necessary that it record mp4 video like e900 or n70.it only take 3gp video and not with the best quality.but i suggest u this phone coz its a good one and i can say that its better than n73 except in photo/video quality(3MP for the n73) and the external speaker(stereo speakers for the n73).and please can somebody tell how to protect my media file?is there a code that we put or we shall deplace them in a specific dossier?help me plz

i have this phone for almost one year, and now its broken i brought it to sony ericsson to have it repair, and they told me that they have to check the motherboard, at first i thought the problem was the flex cable because of the white display, and they told me to wait 2-3 weeks to get it fix and to see what is really the problem

I had this phone for 18 months and liked it a lot - very reliable and easy to use. Good size buttons/ok for texting and gaming. I did however have a problem when sliding the slider quicky it would turn itself off! Other main drawback is that it is very chunky compared to later phones. Processor is not quite fast enough to watch movies on (picture lags sounds). I replaced mine with the w910 and in some ways this is better.

In my opinion this phone has been fab! I have had it for a year and a half now and it was workin great untill about 2 weeks ago.! It survived plenty of drops and compared to the new walkmans none of the buttons have broke. It may be an old phone now but i still use it now even though i have the new sony erricson c902. I thought this phone was good, this is why when my mum put my old one in the washing machine i replaced it with the same phone. I reccomendthis phone for anyone who wants a simple but very handy and unbreakable 'genious'. I would say the only problems with this phone is the orange walkman button which always gets in the way,it is always calling people who are on my call lists which leads to deletion of calls and the sim card has uneasy access. the white colour things upside of the screen is light detector...when cover with fingers then the screen went dark..if dont cover then it become bright again..so fun..anyway,my sister's keypad cracked,flashlight&camera cannot be used..

My mate's phone had the same problem, it's gonna need a repair, but in the meantime the screen will work if you turn off the phone, then turn it back on while the slide is open...

well i bought it as soon as it was released, it worked just fine (though its navigation keypad cracked soon), but after about 15 months the navigation keys failed and afterwords the whole screen went black. gave it for repair but it to date its not working. i think it was a waste of money (mind you it was priced at around Rs. 20,000/- in india when it was launched), i must say that my impression about sony ericsson phones is not very positive.

yeah i agree with you,, but u still comparing aples and oranges,, cellphone cameras are built to be light,, the reason they put a single layer lense,, the lense is also midrange anlged not wide range the digital cameras has,, and used primary for just shoot photos,, not for quality and framed to display in studios etc,, we compare camera phone to camera phone,, the reason why no one here compare the picture to the ones shot by the digital camera,, and thus anybody want to have a phone wid a 2 inch hole sticking at back of their phones??

yeah i agree,, sony ericsson made the w850 to be rugged,, camera is brilliant although lacks auto focus is more natural than the ones used by nokia and other brand,, also it can match the w950 agigabyte hard drive by simply inserting a 4gigabyte memory stick, infact the one that i used,, it also supports album art w950 has,, the only thing it lacks is the huge touch screen, perfect for watching video clips,, but the screen is also brilliant,, infact it is also the type of screen that the famous k800 has,, the weakness that this phone has arre its navy keys,, it cracks but still functional even though it cracks, still this is a great phone,,

i'm using 8gb memory stick, no problem at all, i have over 500+ song, still have lots of space to fill, no lag or slow speed problem. Everything works just fine like my previous 1gb card.

i've been using this phone for a year now. it's a good phone overall but after a while the upper layer's keypad tend to crack, so does the other part of this phone's houser. i bought it to a se shop nearby but the replacement black houser is slightly different.

Hi Paul, u r trying 2 compare mid-range(W850) wit high end series(W950) Besides bigger screen size n 4GB built-in nothing else can beat W850. In my opinion W850 is very much better bcos it is built with 2MP camera with double flash, memory card support up to 4GB and finally although it is 2006 model, but it comes with Sony Ericsson's latest software!! Furthermore, W950 does not hv built in camera wich hurts. I would definitely suggest u 2 go 4 W850! Further questions about any Sony Ericsson phone's mail me at [email protected].

It amazes me how you guys keep asking these questions about which camera phone looks the best, the answer is NONE, All these cell phones use cheap lenses.. PERIOD ive got a nokia 1.3M, sony 1.2M and another sony 2M pixel phones and all outcomes are the same! Clear in the middle and blurry going out toward the edges. Nothing changes, i go to my sony digital camera and go to VGA mode and the picture is IMACULATE from the inside and out!! No blur's at all its all about the LENSE. And until these cell phone companies realize to put in better lenses, the pics will always come out half way descent. But then again its a cell phone camera.. How much quality do you really expect to get?? Try it for ur self, if u have a camera phone and digital camera, set them to the same resolution and snap the same picture and look at them on the computer closely....

when the phone is in the standy mode and you press a button is it normal that you see a lines at the screen when the lcd turns on?? it only lasted half of a second and after that the screen runs normal,, is it just fine?? or my phone suffers ribbon failure???

nice choice:) this fone was very durable,, interms of performance it is one the best! try conparing it to nokia Nseries, sound features was great too!! no lagging!! nice pictures too,, even though it lacks auto focus,, the image is great!! video is quite nice,, but it gets pixelated when the scene is fast because it records in QCIF format not mpeg4,, the only weakness of this fone was its navy pad,, it is not just small but it cracks,, but still it works even though it cracks,, it has no effect to its performance though, for youre money, this is a great choice,, but the w910 was the best, if you cant wait to save & buy the w910, w850 was a nice option,interms of features specially durability,, pound for pound!! enjoy!!

I have owned the SE W850i for about 2 years. In the previous 2 years I owned 6 different Mobiles. Thats how reliable this phone is. There are no limitations to the size of file you can put on the phone, it will play full DVD Length movies and Tonnes more. I absolutuly loved my phone. I lost it about 6 weeks ago now and I am finding it impossible to replace. I have to wait until October before the Phone I will Replace it with is available. But if I can't wait that long, then I will just buy another one of these phones, they may be 2 years old now but they remain just as useful and reliable. Buy and Enjoy :)

Performance is Unbeatable!! believe me the ribbon is tough and durable mines lasted 2 years but the weakest part of W850i is the D-Pad!, mine is badly cracked it still works fine, but it loooks really bad imagine a huge crack through it thats what it looks like.. otherwise W850i is a Great Performer Overall

Ive had many phones but I have got to say this one is the best by far! It is so easy to use and I have never had any problems with it! The only disadvantages are that it is not the most attractive phone and also the camera is not brilliant but it takes good pictures!! It is very easy to text etc.. It has almost every feature Good size screen Brilliant music player Very good battery life, I rarely have to charge it even after listening to lots of music and taking photos! It is just an all round good phone which is very easy to use and ive never had a problem with it! I strongly reccomend it!

Plz use My Phone Explorer( its freeware and a lot better than the original Sony PC Suite ) It can save all yor msgs/contacts/files on the PC. There are different modes like inbox, sent, saved, drafts etc.There is another option also. You can select all msgs ( Ctrl+A and Right Click and export selected msgs to destination folder in the form of text file. You can easily do it. There is even a backup option. You save your original msgs and delete them from phone (WARNING : Be sure not to connect the phone to PC while deleting msgs from phone and do it only after you have saved your msgs on your PC) after that you may safely delete from phone. Then connect your phone and the Software will ask you if you want to delete msgs from archives or not. Choose save. There is only one glitch. You may end up with several copies of the same msgs( I did ) but atleast you wont lose your msgs. You can restore all / individual msgs to your phone

although W850 was been already phased out it was really a one of phone, interms of durability,, the newer walkman phones of sony w580 suffers a keypad cracks,, interms of features and durability,, w850 was still the best,, i dont need that shake control, sense me walkman 3.0 or the auto focus, because this already a best phone,, all around!! no cracking,, no hang ups! just a best durable phone,, although i forgive that cracking navypad;)

Nick, why do you insist on singing the praises of the N82 in all the sony ericsson walkman forums? Why aren't you posting on the thread for the phone you actually like? It's like your sole purpose here is to wind people up. Have you not learned by now that the vast majority of people are not bothered by the walkman adaptor? And HSDPA coverage isn't really wide enough yet to be a major factor. It makes sense that the N82 would support more formats - it was released over a year later. None of the points you made change the fact that the W850 has the best sound quality of any phone that I've heard, with the possible exception of the W960. And let's face it - with a music handset the quality is what REALLY matters...

this is really an amazing phone in terms of the battery life and also the music player... however my only complaint is that although being a 2mp camphone, not having autofocus definitely affects the overall positive rating i can give for this phone. i use this and also an n73 from nokia.. so basically the w850i is my all-around mp3 player/call and text phone while the n73 i simply use for photos. one can't have best of both worlds... so it's a stable balance for me between having both the nokia and the sony ericsson. ;)

i own a Golden White W850i, this phone has been with me for a year now. This phone is everything i ever wanted from a music / camera phone. Looks wise, it is very practical and fashionable at the same time. The only feature that would be lacking in this great phone would be the auto-focus which is present in W900i and W810i. I recently bought a W910i Hearty Red color, but unfortunately it failed in several areas. Its body paint fades due to repeated friction from my leather case, no photo light and lastly the body feels too light. As for me the W850i is THE LAST MOBILE PHONE that SONY ERICSSON created that can be classified as ONE OF THE BEST!

If your planning on buying this phone soon, DONT! Front button cover cracks really easily, my phone now looks like crap, and is sooo hard to find a replacement that fits it correctly. Also gets really boring, really quickly. I got this back in April 07, i think i was bored with it after about a month - time for upgrade now!!! 1 good thing - it is very hardy (other than the button cover) i have dropped this phone countless times and other than a few slight scuff marks, still fine!!! thats true.. i hv experienced the same problem.. another thing that i dont like is that there's no macro mode for the camera. and sometimes when i tried to open the menu too quick, it'll display the menu as F4:1234 or whatever weird digits instead of the "menu" word. but overall the phone really has good features! and the best thing about the phone is the long-lasting battery.. if its not due to the probs i listed above, i'll rate 9/10.

I'm getting frustrated with my w850, I used it for almost a year and now the down navigator key dosnt work anymore, in large messages I cannot see it in full bcause the down navigator dosnt work... Had this mobile for a year, I can say that it has a strong body. since I dropped it about 4 or 5 times and still it works perfectly. The slider mechanism is nothing but perfect. If you put the W850 head to head with the N80, sure the W850 would ace the test. I experienced some problems though. Sometimes the mobile had to start its self for unknown reasons. The sound quality is just perfect, although I found the volume is not really high!! (Want to find a solution 4 this problem) If you are a file transferring freak, you won't be happy with the transfer rate that the included USB offers (it's really slow). try to consider a memory card reader, it would be way much faster.

Its true n73 is louder but its loudness has this noise or distortion.but w850 is very loud and sound quality of its speakers is perfect.best phone speakers ever made. And theres no WOSD syndrome in SE.my bro & my friend had a k700 and they got it together and stayed with it for two years without a single glitch.i have the w850 and its been with me for over a year & its glitchless too.actually its perfect.& my use is pretty rough.plus w850 are well known for their toughness & durability.so if u managed to screw up urs then my friend u must be a horrible user.probably chuking it at people.SEs do have a problem with the headphone\charger jack tho. My W850i just died (WSOD) after a little more than a year, the known White Screen Of Death of SE phones... I WAS happy with that phone but now i'm deeply disappointed with SE... I used to have W810i before my 850 but it also died after 1 month that I got it (same WSOD syndrome). Also, the headset/charger "jack" or "port" gets loose very easily... I would look this time for the standard headphone jack (like those in Nokia Express Music phones), I think that would be much better and less troublesome...

Well i have this pohe for 1 year already. Is a good telephone, 1GB well, i guess good enough for this phone. Overal performance is very good. The worst thing about this telephone is the camera.. 2 mega pix, yes!, but a B.I.G. but is that since does not have auto-focus, pictures comes out no too good really, specially if you or the person you are picturing makes a even a small movement the picture comes out terrible. If you are to be taking pictures of builbings, i guess this camera will work for you. Good telephone and audio, camera not at all.

got this phone as a replacement for my 810i that died just after a month that i bought it. it keeps getting white screen and it won't turn off/on unless you remove that battery till it eventually died... now this 850i is doing the exact same thing after about a year though... am i just getting a bad apple or this has been a known SE units issue????

I bought this phone about a year ago mainly for the MP3 player so I could use it at the gym and while walking. Unfortunately I only used it for a month as the more music I put on it the slower the mp3 program ran. Finally I got so frustrated that I gave up altogether and bought an mp3 player! Otherwise, the phone has issues with turning itself off, calling the last person dialled (without my doing it!), and recieving calls without even ringing. Disappointing.

As you might know that w850 has Walkman version 2.0 while the w910 has walkman version 3.0 along with Shake features and high speed speakers. thus as far as I am concerned, so the da w910 is better for music lovers. But if u are intrested in camera too so should go for w850i. becoz w850's camera is far better than w910i. As I am using da gr8 w850i due to its sound quality along with nice camera & rich bettery life. So now its defends on your need/choice. Wish u best of luck. Abbas Bangash

Dear All. I'm using this sexy & stylish mobile from a month now. Its really the best phone according to its sound quality & rich battery backup. (minimum 4 days with normal use). To: Yumi Da w850 can log on2 da internet. Probably u dnt hav da internet settings which r compatible 2 both ya phone & ya operator(Ya operator is ya service provider or network provider, like vodafone, cellnet, vodacom, etc) So wen u get an error message lyk [CONNECTION FAILURE, PLS CONTACT YA OPERATOR/PROVIDER 4 SUPPORT] its usualy because u dnt hav internet setting or u hav da wrong 1. so check if u hav them & if not cal ya network provider.

I had my w850i for jus abt 2 mths b4 i returned it...dere was a prob wit d screen dat i noticed d first day i got it...i got it checked but d problem wasnt resolved. although it still under warranty d dealers doh wanna giv me a new fone back for d same price i paid bcuz dey say it depreciated....it still under warranty n it's not my fault...is dat allowed?!!!!!!!! help!!!(P.S. I've been owning the w850 for 10 months now. After 1 month the d pad started cracking. I really liked this phone at first. But i realize i can't see the keypads lights in the sun only in the dark. I love the pictures taking with this phone and the music too.

I have owned a SE W850i and for the best part of this time the phone has been fantastic - however over the last month or so I have had nothing but problems with it - the D Pad has been cracked for a while - but as it's a slide phone a huge gap between the top and bottom of the phone emerged meaning that my phone kept crashing and it kept making the screen go weird. I had this one replaced by my insurance company - after having the phone 2 weeks - the top and bottom parts of the phone again started to separate so that you could see the lights behind the slide and all the way through to the other side.

I've never yet seen a w850 that doesnt come with a 1GB memory card....and if by earpiece you mean headphones then it does, if you mean bluetooth earpiece then it doesnt in general release

@Lord Caesar this isnt due the contacts its just every SE phone restarts after a USB connection even my W850i hangs after i transfer songs to it this is to Due to the USB connection having USB Charging! dont worry nothings wrong with the phone its just becuase it Charges whenc connected with USB

@dani Tnx man! Everything works perfectly well in my w850. I also downloaded the new pc suite from se website but my only problem is that when i tried to synchronize the contacts, the unit gets hang when it reaches to the 20th contact! It frustrates me because i have to remove the battery and try to turn On the unit again. Can you help me with this? I appreciate your help. Tnx

One thing i've noticed with the d-pad cracking is thati've not seen it on any english handset other than '3' branded phones....if yours is english can i ask what network? On another note, had the phone for 16 months, took an original 12 month contract and decided to keep this one running with my new contract instead of using the phone they supplied with my new one (mainly took it for a wii) which is the utterly disgraceful N95

hey arti, well if you care more about pictures quality then go for the K810i, but if you like music then choose the W850i. Sure the K810i does have a music player but the Walkman player of W850i is better than that of the K810i. Hope that this helped you in your decision..

W850 music part of this phone is great: walkman mp3, radio with track-Id and grate sound quality. Camera iz not good enough(there is no autofocus in it). 3250 has a louder speaker, but if you listen music with you headphones take W850, it's betta phone, if you like listening to da music. I beteer like SE menu its morelogical and simple

i Personally W850 is better then W810 i had both of them for 1 Day i always saw myself picking up the W850i the Music Output is Louder on W850 and bigger display and 3G its a better Music Phone the W850 were as W810i only for good Camera Walkman in W810i is not as good as W850's Walkman 2.0 i recommend W850

hi to all... i really love diz phone coz it can run almost all games and applications ive downloaded from diff. sites... got 1GB memory card and installed more dan 30 games/apps. but it doesnt hang..it works well!!! aside from enjoying loads of mp3 tunes dat i also installed to my phone, i can also enjoy playing txt twist, scrabble,dance revo, super mario! 3D adventure games etc... it can also play full length music videos of my fave artists...it rocks!!!

I've been using this phone for 4 months already...Its an awesome phone...Apart from my cracked d-pad and mediocre 2 megapixel camera...Everything's great...Sound quality through the loudspeakers are very clear...The flash themes preinstalled in the phone are damn cool especially 'grouped'. The orange walkman key is also unique and light effects too! This is my first ever sony ericsson phone since i've been using nokia smartphones such as 3230, n90 and n93...But this phone made me a sony ericsson fan....Well done sony ericsson!

N73 has louder speaker than w850i... but w850i's speaker has better quality ( more clear and detail not like the N73 speaker that only loud but distord the sounds all the way... ) in quality sounds from headset w850i beat N73 by a very wide margin... the advantage of N73 from w850i only the camera i think... but the other aspect w850i is better because it never hang and freeze like all of N-series from NOKIA...

@ady Nokia N73 is better obviously! but W850i has great Java and Walkman this is my view on it: iv had it for 2 years the 2006 Model: these are its problems: D-Pad has Cracked Slider is Loose and Makes creaking noises Battery Life has gone down to 2 days its stopped reading the Memory Card i mean...this is a 2006 Model of W850i and its given alot of Problems.. PS:2007 Models have NONE of these Problems and its been discontinued(out of production) !

This phone is a waste, the battery is sucked up in 1 day, my w800 can stay for 3 days (music+email+massage+phone), the camera is poor (w810(my roommate�s phone) proves its pride here), the buttons are awkwardly designed, dunno if anybody would take this phone. Well this phone has HSCSD and W850 doesn't. As i understood, HSCSD is another network which enables u to transfer data at high speeds, kindof like 3G or EDGE. The W830 has both EDGE and HSCSD so now i'm asking, do those networks go hand in hand? and since the W850 has no EDGE or HSCSD, does that make its capabilities to transfer data at dependent on 3G alone? Finally, since the W830 have both EDGE and HSCSD, and the W850 has only EDGE, does that make the SE W830 better than the SE W850? I'm also curious about the speakers, which one has the louder speaker? or are they the same.

my Memory card slot of Breaking..everytime i slide it open go to File Manager and then memory card and it says *No Files* ?? i have to take the mmc out put it back in then it works! ...weird problem but it happens alot now

I've used this phone for quite some time and It's absolutely freaking brilliant. A friend dropped it once while it was playing music and absolutely nothng happened.no interruptions or anything, And i once accidentally sent it down a flight of steps, step-by-step! And nothing , no issues...It is definitely a fab phone. It froze once or twice on me when on the internet but thats was i think coz i tried to navigate a large page before it completed loading. I have had the w850 for a long time. Its truly a remarkable phone. Works a treat. Battery.. Amazing, D-pad does not crack. Its only froze on me twice, but after restarting the phone, it was perfection. i must admit the camera is not all that good but as a music phone, its just great !!!

This phone is almost perfect. I had a W900i (white) before i had this phone (white as well).W900i has one of the best pictures and videos because of one smart feature...AUTOFOCUS! yes people, this is the only feature that lacks in the W850i, Everything else is just like its predecessor but picture quality kinda sucks. Everything else is perfect even the colors were well placed on the phone's fascia.

I must agree that there's something about the battery. Normally, unused, my other SE phones can last for days. But W850i seems to drain quite fast, within 2 days (my experience), you can see the level of the batt heading towards the far end to the right. Otherwise, I think this phone is cool.

I upgraded to the 850 from the 700 and, honestly, I was much happier with the older model. They've made awesome progress on some features and at the same time gone backwards with others. The camera, specifically has lost alot of quality. Although it has the same megapixels, the 850's photos suck. But having an mp3 player on your phone is very very very cool!

@dani I'm agreed with you about w910 have a lots of new features but sony ericsson should give it a flash.Flash really important what for taking pictures in a night or at dark area..So how's that?For the 1st time,i really want w910 because for me it's really nice but when i read the review,it doesnt have a flash.It really dissapointed me.So i'll go for w850.

@kevin I think you should choose this fon.Even though w810 have auto focus but it doest have A2DP which is very usefull nowdays.Of course you want to used stereo headset which is cool and without messy wire.In addition this fon have 3G but w810 doesnt have.So i recomend you to choose w850.

I'm getting this phone next summer. I'm getting the color black. I like this phone more than thw W910 because first its louder than the W910. Second its the first slider phone that has walkman 2.0. Third it got flash which is important because with out flash night pictures with look bad. If this phone got af I'm definently getting it. I'm think of buying the W900, W800, or this phone. I don't know which one to buy. Can anyone help me thx. btw this phone is a lot better than W910. (my opinion)

Have it. Not so pleased. Too big & too heavy. Weird design. Camera has no focus and is worse than other modules. Good screen though. W810 is much better IMO.

for video calling simply go to *Video Call* in the Menu and the calling options will be there to everyone who wants to know: W850i is Great,you wont regret buying it! nothing can go wrong with it Software is Stable and fast! i tot i regret buying this phone...i am realizing that i regret selling it the best phone ever...it does so much...its fast...never laggs.the camera was excellent the video camera was like 6 out of 10 but w.e it had an excellent video player...excellent screen res...and colors trust me the only thing you wil regret is giving this phone away or selling it

Had four of these on the go for 11 months now only problems I have had is the phone speaker crackling, and the screen prone to getting scratched. Great battery life, great reception, good radio reception, good camera, the Sony Ericsson car chargers even have a light in them powerful enough to read a map with at night. Have now upgraded to a different phone but will keep these going for as long as I can.

I have this phone and I really really think it is one of the best phones ever. I thought that I would hate the slide as I had a swivel one before but I am used to it now. I have a 4GB memory stick in mine so I can have music all the time. The battery lasts at least 2 days and I love the FM radio

@gka3000 this is how my story goes... i Bought my W850i in October 2006 iv used to the Full up till now and since its a 2006 Model The D-Pad has Cracked and my Slider is Creaking and my back cover is creaking...but it still works PERFECTLY! No Hanging,stil Great Battery Life,all Buttons and keypad still work! .. 2007 Models of W850i dont have any of the problems i have in my 2006 Model..Sony Fixed the problems in the 2007 Models ..so youl be Lucky to Have it! Best of Luck

Hi, Already 6 months since I bought SE W850 on June 07. All just goin fine. Battery is OK, the ring tone is loud. But the vibration is a bit weaker then Nokia. But it�s no problem for me, I could feel it when I turn on the silent profile. The casing crack only for the white (It�s happen to all of my friends who own white SE). I'm own the black one and the casing is good as new. For the price, it�s worth it. No regret for buying this phone.

well i bought my W850i this time last year and the D-Pad is Cracked and the Slider is Loose and my slider is creaking my Hardware is Fine but sometimes has a mind of its own does stuff by itself e.g. WAP/Walkman !! Mechanically its fine, but the Build Quality is BAD ...as alot of people hava said in this forum it lasts 1 Year MAX... Sony Could have Done better then this....

I have a W850 and it's really beautiful. My only grudge is that it takes a little time to get use to the awkward d-pad. I also hope that SE soon sorts out the problem with the Walkman Player when you are setting up the playlist: you get to choose from the file list view, instead of the walkman view, which should be the case (this is a tad annoying). It also lacks autofocus and macrofocus in its camera, but otherwise i love it.

Just adding onto my last comment, i also had the same issue with the D-pad cracking. i first noticed it in the first....2weeks of getting it. i wasnt too happy, but i was too lazy 2 have it fixed =) also, the LH photo button has also stopped working, which sucks, but if i wanted it for thecamera, i would have brought a Cyber-shot phone. lol the slide has worked a little too loose for me =/ and i find th walkman button to be a total pain in the ass to use >=(

i had the same problem, with the phone turinig itself off, really annoying. and the battery life is great, except when using WAP. fantastic speaker quality. i am upgrading to the K850i so i hope that going from walkman to cyber-shot dosent mean i will lose sound quality

At first, this phone is everything that I need. Good music, decent camera, and long batery life. Only problems was minor, only cracking d-pad and sleep mode after playing a video, quite annoying but back then I still could live w/ that. But after 14 months, this phone started to show it cheapness. Now everytime I play the music, the handset always become hot and the battery is drained so fast. And everytime I turn on and off the music, I always get big, annoying, clicking noise on my earphone, really hurts my ears. SE was a big disappointment for me. I was considering to go back to Nokia or try Samsung.

Bought this phone after giving away my W810. So I'll basically compare the two. I find the W850 quite impressive. W850 is better looking, Music is better, speaker louder, pictures smoother & screen larger though not brighter. I really miss the auto focus and more powerful flash and solid build of W810. An overall very good phone but will likely upgrade to W960 as soon as it is available.

Hi 2 all A month or so ago i posted an opinion on this phone, at the time i only had it for 3 days, it's been a month now, back then i said that the slide was tough, but it relly loosend up alot, to be honest it's a bit to loos for my tast now, but i'm very picky. the review on this site says that you have to buy a memory card out of your own pocket, but i got my'n with a 1gig included, witch was a relief for me coz this phone uses a "memory stick pro duo", witch is very expensive becoze it's a high speed qality product, and is just a tad smaller than a normal SD card. I got a virus on my phone, you should be carefull coz that costs about R100 to fix, you will have to take your phone in to upgrade your software to firmware to download some software. Anyone know were i can download a antivirus for this phone?

To ib4z. The front camera cannot be used to capture pictures. It only get active during a video call. I downloaded camera tools and set the main camera on cam 1. So now i can capture images with the front cam.

the reason the screen will be bright and then suddenly go dark is because you are covering up the light sensor. The light sensor is the clear oval located on the top of the screen unit. Remember that the w850 is not the w850i, the w850i has most of the bugs fixed up and is now quite a reasonable phone for the price.
