Really bad phone, even if you forget the basic things (like just 4gb of storage for example) you will see nice surprises, like bad speaker, an camera that starts doing strange things just 1 year later, extreme lag even if you use custom roms etc etc.....in the end (and more in 2017) you have to keep this on gingerbread.....and even then you will have a low end phone just for calls, because app support in 2.3 is dying.

If your xperia u is running slow just ROOT it and run performance manager OR RAM booster app . It can easily defeat the phones having 2-3-4 GB ram. Rooting phone is not harmful it just void your warranty though your phone works superb you dont need the service centre at all. Just rooting phone should be done very carefully or expert is recommended. I have already shocked my friends with my xperia u performance and still no one of them able to defeat my phone in performance.

I had this Sony Xperia U for 2 years and a half , at First it was so so, it was very slow , compared with other smartphones ,its best feauture is the looks and the audio; then it turn out to be completely useless, even for a quick call you have to spend about 10 min because it restarts all the time , the only possitive is that I changed it for the Xperia XA paying an extra 75 bucks, , great deal :D

Sony U is annoying only because it's very slow, and here are few interesting things regarding this phone if you want to use it normally: 1.you'll have to unlock bootloader, 2.install CM11 android 4.4.4 3.set CPU governor to 'performance', set I/O scheduler to 'SIO' and enjoy your new old phone. Only drawback is that the battery will drain faster but phone will work great. Just google all the steps and try it if you haven't already throw it in a trash.

I am using this mobile for about 3 years, it has Android 4.1 custom ROM, it has high sound, good camera, no problems in calls, little heating after playing games for a while. Battery stands for 3-4 days while mid. usage level, and 5-6 days while lite usage level. It takes about 2.5 hours to charge. Of course, it is not the best, but it is very great. I love Sony.

Using this phone since 2012.08 Phone is great, small, can do basic things Camera is Bad ,awful zoom ,bad in rooms/darker places. Battery without Google apps can hold up to 6 days. Black case will peel off, if using phone with moist hands unlike others Sony's such type cases ,great illuminating bar as a notification ,sound is okay'ish. Cannot browse/use huge apps for a long period will lag badly ,will heat ,never overheat Many friends with xperia U had problem with antenna after +-1 year using it ,can be fixed cheap or under warranty

the only one thing which i like in xperia u is its look..... rest features are useless....!! and if you have to use it for more than one year then please restore it after every three month....!! otherwise it will hang and process slowly.....overall, its look in best and rest everything i hate.

I bought sony xperia u in June 2013. It is a waste of hard earned money. It had touch problem, hanging, heating, slowness, zero resale value, no expandable memory is a big prob etc. You cannot attach word docs to mails. This is a shame on sony brand. I was impressed by the brand (while purchasing the mobile), but now scared to buy any other sony products.

This phone was good to start with but now after 2 years its not so good. It freezes multiple times a days, takes 10 mins to open apps like snapchat and has now stopped working all together. I only suggest getting this phone for a short term (1year)

2.5 years is a pretty typical life for especially a smaller capacity battery which gets charged harder. You can buy nearly-new ones on the web very cheaply, to give a new lease of life. As for the touchscreen failing, yes that's a known issue with the Xperia U unfortunately, and you'll most likely be out of warranty to get it repaired. In the UK extra buyer protection may offer some redress (devices are supposed to work for 6 years or similar) but no idea how that works in practice, or where in the world you are!

Yes, via PC Companion or similar software. Unlike minor version updates, you don't get alerted on the phone itself. However Sony's 4.0 is not a happy match for the Xperia U, so unless you have a pressing need to upgrade, better sticking with 2.3 to keep things fast and reliable. It's not as if any of the recent security fixes to Android will make it to either.

It's 6GB really, though broken down slightly unhelpfully. From the unofficial Xperia U FAQ: I've heard the phone has 4GB/6GB/8GB/56GB storage - what's the truth? The Xperia U has 8GB of built-in flash memory, and is not internally expandable. Of that, 4GB is available via USB (MTP protocol) for music, video, images etc. 2GB is reserved for phone storage, such as text messages and some applications - many applications are able also to use the main 4GB area. The remaining 2GB is hidden and used exclusively by the Android operating system. So the total memory available to users is 6GB, though only 4GB of that is directly accessible. Mentions of 56GB refer to the availability of an additional 50GB free on-line "cloud" storage.

Everything of this phone is better except its touchglass & not having a memory card slot.I & all my freinds used this phone had to replace its touchglass.I've heard most of other xperia u users did the same thing.Therefore there might be a problem in the touchglass.I think it's better to have a HTC OR NOKIA LUMIA branded phone than this piece of toy.

This is a very terrible phone. don't waste your 12,000 rupees in this stupid box of shit. i have personally used this phone and after 10 days it's speaker went off and i had to purchase a new speaker for 1000 rupees. And a month after, it just stopped working. i tried everything to power on this but no. And it is not going to be upgraded in android 4.0 icecream sandwich, it will always remain gingerbread. you cannot transfer music or photos from your pc to te phone and you cannot take apps like chrome browser or update any of the apps to a newer version. So don't go on the looks and camera of the phone. It is just a stupid box of shit.

Fine phone - as long as you don't use Facebook. After two years of daily usage, with many later phones coming into my hands, I still find that the extremely manageable size, weight, feel and apparent heft of this phone make it a worthy daily driver. However, the perceived lack of RAM memory many had mentioned earlier only becomes an issue when using the Facebook app, which effectively kills any semblance of performance the phone is capable of. If you want this phone to keep performing well, don't use the Facebook app; you'd be better off accessing Facebook through one of the browsers instead. Other than that, the two specimens I have had for quite a while now (in consumer electronics terms, that is,) have been nothing short of stellar. Even having bought many later phones with much better specifications, I still pick up the U and go out and about out of sheer nostalgia.

I have this mobile since june 2012. Aside from the usual Sony low level camera video audio sound photos quality, it works ok on Gingerbread not ICS which is beyond its powers. Doesn't have any unusual simptoms or flaws. It only has 512MB RAM so don't expect miracles. Anyway, it's an old story by now so forget it. Many apps aren't even compatible with GB anymore so...check newer models.

Official Sony ICS is exactly as described, in my experience. There's not a lot you can do about it, other than roll back to 2.3.7, which is officially a service centre operation, though is possible with flashtool, the appropriate rom (may depend on region) and a bit of luck (no rooting required).

It is an OK smart phone, had mine from introduction, only quibbles are : It needs a high current (~2 amps) USB charger initially, e.g. an 'Apple triangle' to start if the battery is empty. Lots of USB chargers wont start it from flat. I probably need a new battery now but it still holds up for a day of use. note I inhibit the Xmas tree light to save current, too embarrassing in tube trains aside from increased battery drain.

Hi @ is it posable to take my contacts out of my phone or read on a laptop via usb? @ Probably but I convert mine to the generic format and email to myself. from contacts select option key send contacts mark all send etc. Otherwise you back up to internal memory and copy internal memory to PC via USB

Note google play was not the original name but it (the 'play' app) should be updated to current version with your first update, you need to enable the synch and back ground data traffic in settings - accounts and synch, and need to enable data or WiFi data traffic.

Crap phone Every six months it has touchscreen problems took it to service center two times once on warranty and once without, now its not even six months the touchscreen problems have resurfaced! I never upgraded it to ics its still running on GB it lags like hell! Dont go for any sony phone, their glory days ended with sony-ericsson.

Probably not a good choice then. It's best on Android 2.3, and the official 4.0 is not good quality. Over the next few years more and more apps will be demanding newer versions of Android and more memory and storage. Yes, you can root and use better custom ROMs, but you will always be limited by the low amount of available system memory and (non-expandable) internal storage. Hope that helps.

Has to be done via the PC Companion software. Used to be possible by SUS but they've stopped supporting that now. Beware though, Sony's version of 4.0 is not good, so unless you have some urgent reason to upgrade and can accept that many functions will be worse, avoid.

I fully agree your comment. My xperia U has the same problem, even before a year had passed: slowlyness, getting stuck. When using either Wifi of 3G internet, and a Phone call comes in, the Phone seems not to decide wanting to connect or not. The person calling is getting no, or very slow connection. I would have liked to use this Phone for at least 2 years, but already searching for a new one, yet (not a Sony again)

Recommendation: I bought this phone and upgraded it to ICS, it sucks for the phone, Wi-Fi jams on when you leave a network coverage so u have to reboot the phone, takes ages to answer a call (lights up, but if u answer before it rings, like 10 sec, it won't work) and front camera never work. Anyway, I suck with phones but i somehow managed to downgrade this phone back to Gingerbread and it works a dream! Everything works again it's like a new phone. Fully recommend downgrading your phone- it's not even that difficult once u read the instructions online carefully. Good luck!

Do not buy. Phone constantly locks up. When dialling a number I have had light touch response, firm touch response and no reaction at all and ALL three types of response in the same phone call. Often will not response when I get a call so I cannot answer. If I use the alarm and touch the wrong part of the screen I cannot switch the alarm off and have to remove the battery. I backed up my phone regularly using the Sony software however when my phone was stolen and I asked Sony how I could recover the backup I was told that I must connect the phone. Guess what, it has been stolen so how can I recover my backup. Sony's response was to use third party software; no suggestions. What is the point of backup software if you cannot recover the data?? To summarise, on many occasions the phone does not operate as a phone; touch screen is problematic in that you do not know if it will work or not; Sony backup software is useless (except to Sony who want you to buy another phone.

I reverted mine to 2.3 OK. Was just a case of finding the FTF file of the 2.3 firmware for my region, then loading it on with flashtool. No unlocking, rooting or anything else required. Only fiddle was having to do a factory reset afterwards because some of the 4.0 settings confused 2.3, so it would go into a force-close loop. Much better for it, though.

To make a backup use 'easy backup' from play store- then connect with usb to computer-find the backup on your phone(file with a date of backup in its name) , install 'easy backup' on the other phone- connect with computer and copy backup to phone and restore it.

I have to say that my experience with the Sony Xperia phone has been disastrous. I cannot wait until the end of my contract to bin it. Yeah, the official Facebook app caused me loads of problems in ICS, ranging from random pauses to complete lockups needing a battery pull. Disabling it (and using e.g. Atrium instead, if required) made a huge difference.

Think twice before you buy sony xperia phone worst handset experience My nightmare experience with Sony Xperia Z1. I bought a new xperia z1 on 4th sep 2014 and it start giving me problem on 10th sep 2014. Not even 10 days it work fine. when am making up a call the other person not able to hear me, it was major issue i was not able to communicate so many important things are laying at that time. And am not at all happy with the service they even don't pick up your call for the first tym you have to try 4-5 times then only you can able to connect. Earlier they are saying it would take 20 working days to get the phone serviced when i asked for new handset as it was a recent purchase they were start making excuses and said talk to customer care. customer care person said talk to service center people. I even didn't get a response that weather they are giving me new handset or not or how much time it would take. Think twice before you buy Xperia!!

I managed to downgrade mine using flashtool. I found the stock 2.3 ROM file, and it downgraded without unlocked bootloader, rooting or installing anything else. Did have to do a factory reset immediately after though, because some 4.0 settings confused 2.3.

The Sony Xperia U was my first smartphone and allowed me to experience absolute worst in smartphone technology. At first the phone was great, it was responsive and did the job. The charger that came with the phone however was the problem. The charger made a large screeching noise when charging that concerned me. So I sent the phone package back. The clerks were nice and exchanged my phone for a new Xperia U. The second time was good for about 2 months. After this period the screen became glitchy and the unlock screen became difficult to use. I proceeded to change the touch settings to high which made my phone more glitchy. The operating system was crap, web pages would freeze, apps would freeze, everything would freeze. When I tried to plug my phone to my mac I had to re install the Sony driver many times and when it finally started to work normally the micro USB - USB stopped responding. So at this point I still had a super loud screeching charger and a micro USB charger that was faulty. The battery on the phone was largely problematic. I usually left for Uni at 5: 30 am and set my wake up alarm at 5am (details don't matter but I'm giving you a context). I set my alarm to the rooster bird alarm that was a default tone that came with the phone (The sound was alright on the phone) The phone became so awful it wouldn't allow me to snooze the alarm as the touch screen was so bad. It was even worst when I recieved calls, I couldn't send texts and could seldom answer calls. The battery would often do strange things, like dislodging itself from its sockets and never turning on and informing me that I had network issues all of a sudden in places where free wi-fi were strong and available. I took every precaution to ensure the optimum performance of my phone. I bought a leather phone case that protected it from the shock damage of falls,never installed music, limited the amount of apps on my phone. The camera was probably the only functioning device on the phone however due to the faulty touch screen I could seldom take photos and I was very early into the use of my hone unable to switch between the video and camera on the device. The size of the phone was pleasant and the sharpness I experienced was great (when I did experience it). The screen resolution could compete with higher ended phones on the market (but what's the point of having a nice touch screen to look at if it isn't responsive as a touch screen). When I looked to see the information on the device on Sony's own website 3 months into owning the seemingly reliable, mid-range phone I was not surprised to see it amongst the archived models no longer available for distribution. It would seem that Sony realised what a rip-off they had been selling to people and were eager to quietly end it quickly with the releases of their more high end models. I hear good things about Sony these days but I will never buy a Sony phone.

Go to xda developer and root this phone with CarbonROM Android Kitkat 4.4.4. Works like a charm after that with about 100MB RAM free most of the time. Only downside is WiFi Direct won't work and music over A2DP. Calls will work with A2DP. BE CAREFUL THOUGH AS IT WILL VOID WARRANTY AND IF NOT DONE PROPERLY CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE.

For me, not one of the best phones Sony made. Due to it's very low specs, for the time it came out it was already obsolete. Battery life is a joke, very very limited, no more than 5 hours. The good things: the screen is awesome. Definition, colors, etc. Sound... well, through the external speaker don't expect HQ audio, but with powerful headphones, you'll notice good sound quality. One thing I must say, the screen is extremely strong and scratch resistant. I'm absolutely amazed with it.

Very bad phone. Constantly cutting off calls due to face touching screen whilst talking or touching one of the many buttons which surround the phone. Also, and this is a major problem, my screen will either work with the lightest of touches, requires a major push or just refuses to react at all. It will do this randomly and often all three within the same operating process. Many times I have received a call and the phone will not let me answer it. With the alarm, if I touch anything other than the screen slide to switch it off I cannot access the alarm, which continues to ring, and the only solution is to remove the battery. Thank goodness I am now out of contract and can dump the thing. And yes is has been back for repair.

Adding memory management apps wont help. It is actually reverse of what ur thinking. Uninstall fb (use your browser) it eats about 45mb of your ram. And uninstall fb app updates and disable it. (all fb components). Disable all buildin apps your not using. In developer options limits running apps into 2 or less. If your not using google services like youtube you can uninstall google play services. (this is only optional) goodluck.

I have not rooted my phone - unlocking bootloader is not allowed by default bcoz of my opertator. You can do it if you go google search xda developers - unlocking bootloader xperia st25i and rooting it.Follow instructions (very friendly rooting guide) and i am pretty sure you will be happy. Then you go on xda xperia u android development where you can download and flash ROMs. Good Luck!!!

I will describe this phone after one week of usage from perspective of normal user. This phone feels comfortable in hands and has very good design including bottom LED light so it is original and stands out from some models. Unfortunately this phone needs user knowledge of maintaining upgraded ICS as Sony made very bad decision of allowing upgrade to ICS. Keep in mind that phone works better on old version (GB) than on newer (ICS).ICS on U has big problem in keeping activities and handling simple apps even system ones like dialer or messenger.It becomes slow and reduces potential of A9 and it feels like 500Mhz rather than dual core 1GHZ. Solution for speeding up a phone is reducing processes and shutting activities with no animations in developer mode. Touch screen may seem a manufacturer faulty and user who think so, is right as phone struggles with registering touch in some places or you may have to tap twice or three times before phone responds however you can quickly get use to it and you will tap screen a bit harder. Screen display is stunning for this price range and I can give 8/10 stars for screen display which is supported by bravia engine(similar to development of Bravia in Sony TVs). I think battery is well enough to keep your phone on e.g. from 7 am to 9 pm. For people who uses phone very frequently it should me not much problem as weak batteries can be later replaced due to repracable battery. Camera is good but not for mass photo capture and I do not recomend using this camera for dark places even if LED flashlight is reduced. Generaly you can only have best use of that phone if you remove ICS stock (you need to flash recovery and root your device) and install stock Kitakat ROMs or Zperience ROMs otherwise you may get frustrated. Overall rank is 6.5/10

I also had this problem while I was trying to use any app for answering calls by motion. Literally all I've tried had the same effect on incoming calls while playing music. Music stops, there's no ringing, I don't hear the caller when I answer but now, as I've removed all of these apps it's all gone and working fine. It is a good phone, overall very nicely designed.

If it's working well, unless you have a very compelling reason to update (or are prepared to fiddle with custom ROMs), I'd stay put with Gingerbread. Stock ICS works, but is laggy and has its fair share of bugs - most annoying one for me is that it makes the camera very slow and sometimes crash altogether. A clean upgrade or factory reset make it a bit slicker and fix a few bugs (like the Media button), but it's still borderline with Sony bloatware on just 512MB RAM.

The touch screen issue seems universal. Been using the phone for one and half year, but few days back the touch screen problem cropped up on my phone. It won't register any touch movements at certain places on the screen. Texting is a nightmare. Every Xperia U user seems to be reporting this problem. It's cause of a cheap digitiser (touch screen) used by Sony. Secondly, it's works alright on ICS but surely not better than on Gingerbread (recommend to factory reset before and after updating to ICS) The phone is not meant to last you in the long run (max. a year, if you are lucky that is)

This was a really good phone the first year i had this, but then came the android upgrade and it all went belly up, got 2 handsets, one for each for my wife and I. Phone plays up constantly, some apps won't start and always send you back to home menu, calls can't be answered, takes ages to actually decide to send a call after tapping the name, after hanging phone up, it decides to call the last person you had phoned. I had bought this phone 2 years back and I noticed a cracking sound in the ear piece. The ear piece was spoiled in 2 days ans SONY replced it with a new phone. That phone also had the same problem (but the ear piece never got damage) and so SONY did not replce it. Its been 2 years now, and it got damaged again. The service center (COMTEL UAE) replced the "receiver". It worked for 2 weeks and got spoiled again. They then replced it repeatdly for 2nd, 3rd and 4th time and all failed with in 2 weeks! Who is to blame? COMTEL or SONY. This is the last SONY I will use. Time to move to HTC.

While listening song suppose I get a call then I am not able to pick the call after receiving also I am not able to hear the voice. for that I need to restart againg to make a call or receive the call. 2.Sometimes while talking voice goes off automatically. Unfortunately touchscreen hardware problems are common with this phone. Some people have been unlucky enough to have two or three failures. I got my touchscreen replaced under warranty by Sony, and it's been fine since as far as I know (I gave the phone to my wife shortly after) but I fear it might prove a problem again. If you download a touchscreen testing app (the one in Function Validation isn't really adequate) you may observe some clear patterns in where touch does and does not reliably register.

Worst piece of cr@p. You would normally use a phone for making phone calls for example, well then you better use something else for it as a rock is more responsive than this garbage. First product that made me comment on SONY mobile's facebook page just to have it removed in 5 minutes by their admin (no cursing was involved), which made me realize that even they want this phone to be vanished from earth without trace, and also they can't stand critics. So if you see one smash it to the floor or do some harm to it so it suffers as it has so many serious performance issues it will ruin your life.

Been using this for more than a year now! updated to ICS. In my opinion this is the best phone in this range. But the newer model(like the one im using) may b the latest manufactured model has the problem with the touch screen, so its has become a shit phone. I am using the 3rd touch screen now. (replaced 2 touch screens before) other than that theres a huge lagg when using google maps in ICS( has to root the frakking thing) SONY buggers made this 4n and now I have a doubt even to try hi-end Sony 4ns. PS: there's also the same touch screen problem with Sony neo v series (one of my frnds) hope this helps guys

been using this phone for more than a year now i just gotta tell you guys this phone is one of the best model at this price range it has a lot of additional features compare to that contenders. yep it has some problems but which phone does'nt? major problem it has no card slot- but it has 6gb memory it's enough i think to day to day activity 2nd problem it can lags frequently but once you root this model you can have numerous custom rom available which runs more than smoothly compared to stock rom. so my verdict it's a awesome phone to be a 1st android title.....

I have this phone for more then a year and I have to say there was a massive problem with it. The problem is that it lags all the time , its unbelievable . The amount of times it has lagged was just a nightmare I could not believe it. i had to keep on restarting the phone due to the lag that the phone had. I won't recommend this to anyone.

Hello guys, am using xperia U from last 2 years, it is working fine on gingerbread, after upgrading to ICS it become slower, this is not because of mobile. it is due to ICS. phones which are having ICS in that apps will never goto sleep, all the apps will run in background and it is the feature of ICS. based on the app usage RAM memory will be get alloted to each app and it will keep on updating the RAM size. to solve this issue i found 1 solution. goto setting->developer options-> background process select 1 process at most. when ever u switch on ur mobile keep practice of doing this setting. this will solve all the issues. initially i faced battery heating up issue. this i shown to service centre, they said it is some software issue and they fixed it. after that till now i havnt faced any issue my phone working fine. This is a good mobile in this price range. am suggesting not to use chrome or web browser bcoz these will consume lots of RAM size. ucbrower is good to use on this mobile.

Ok, so it is touch iussue, at least in your case, but i still suspect it is software in many cases. I have noticed with ICS and many open apps that touch seem to not always work as it should when playing FLOW FREE BRIDGES, seems to be in random places. Not like a big problem but glitches.

There is a bit of a recurring issue with this from what I can tell. I had the same, and a reset, downgrade to GB, etc etc made no difference. I could draw a picture of the screen to show where the problem occurred. Was swiftly fixed by Sony service centre by replacing the touch screen. But I did suspect a software issue initially!

Are you sure touch is always dead in the same places? I suspect you have a lag problem with random non-registered touches. Keep background processes to a minimum and close unused programs, esp those RAM hungry ones like the web browser, it frees up phone resources and lets the phone attend to the touch sensor in a more timely fashion. If problems get too bad you may have to revert to Gingerbread, which is fairly easy, would do it myself but i am managing to keep my U healthy on ICS for now.

I have an old U and dont have problems with the dialer app, not on Gingerbread and not now on ICS. Maybe you installed so much garbage, can you blame the phone for that? Of course its not a fast phone but it works. Bright minds will realize this and keep background apps to a reasonable level. Also, it is a good idea to keep the browser closed when not in use (easy task if running ICS). Chrome doesnt work too well on this phone, unfortunately, so we have to stay with the default browser or Opera (Opera is faster but not that good for desktop sites)

All you people who claim this is one of the best phones out there, you will realize how shitty it gets after couple of months. This phone's got around 370 MB of RAM as opposed to the advertised 512 MB. Just a couple of apps running, and BAM!, the phone hangs up. Would you believe that it takes nearly 30-45 seconds just to open the friggin' dialler app? All this crap is on Gingerbread itself, I wonder how worse it can get if upgraded to ICS!

I've made the upgrade from XU to XM. On the whole it's a good move, but I would warn that the screen quality is worse (colour rendition and viewing angles) and the front-facing camera is worse too. App fans may also find the internal storage rather limited, and there is currently no official way to transfer apps to SD. Otherwise it's a step up for sure, and I hope that perhaps Sony might include the XZ series's colour calibration settings in a future update since the screen colour rendition is a known issue.

I wonder how people don't appreciate this phone... this is a middle to low end phone nowadays .. as for the lagging of screen touch problem i think sony admitted that it is due to the coating made to the screen to avoid scratches makes the screen hard to touch.. as for the lagging of system problem well what do you expect from a 512 memory anyways?.. you better buy a high-end phone if you got the money and stop whining here it won't trick anybody.. the phone already served me for 2 years and still kicking though i had to root the phone and change the screen responsiveness and stuffs like overclocking the cpu. this is a great device and will remain as it is

As with any device, there are faulty ones. Some batches might be affected more than others, due to manufacturing methods and parts suppliers. Mine was faulty. I was just unlucky. It's impossible to predict. May vary by region, but should be a free repair under warranty though.

Xperia U,P, SD card (OTG mod,otg in verysmall form) Hi all, Such devices like Xperia U,P.... iPhones, and some other devices which have no external storage but USB OTG supported, can use SD card or pen drive with OTG. There are many kind of OTG cables, but it is very hard to carry an OTG cable & a card reader all the time, so i am thinking of an OTG with card reader in a very small (as small as it can be) form which can be carried all the time. the card reader will b stored(may be fixed) with the back cover(as shown in the pictures) . i am usuing very small card reader slot, thin wire(like insulated copper coil wire), a tiny siwtch(on/off). pictures & As we know, in OTG pin 4 and 5 are shorted so i am usuing a tiny switch, when i switch on, the pin 4 & 5 are shorted & the cable will work as OTG, & when i switch off it will turn as a normal USB cable, so there will be no Battery Drain. i am trying to configure it ,but having problem when soldering the wires with the micro usb male port. The connections are so tiny, so it is very hard to make it alone, i tested it in a bit large form & it workes, but in small size as shown in figure it becomes very hard to make it ,,,,,,, i am requesting you all to try it & make it by yourself, if we can make it personally i think one day such cables will b available in market in very stable form for all usurs.

I would agree. Unless you have a pressing need and/or are willing to experiment with custom firmwares, leave it well be. Stock ICS basically works, but there are lots of performance issues around it that will almost certainly mean you regret upgrading. Mine got officially reverted by Sony when it went back to have its touchscreen replaced, and it's never been happier. You can also revert with Flashtool, at your own risk (root/bootloader unlock NOT required), so long as you can find the correct stock firmware for your region. If you MUST upgrade, best use Sony Update Service software. Note that you might not be alerted on your phone when ICS update is available in your region. You have to plug it into SUS or similar to check for certain.

The official upgrade to android 4.0 turns the phone to a real shit. The solution is to flash the smartphone with a fresh official android 4 rom or a cyanogenmode 11 rom. You will not loose your data but make a safe copy! Now my xperia U is as fast as it was and I am happy with. I installed a fresh official sony android 4 rom

You do not under any circumstances, want to upgrade the software on this phone. I did, despite there not being any issues with performance and it turned into an expensive paper weight. It lagged badly and I couldn't pick up calls or be heard by callers amongst other problems. Had the original software restored and the phone is back to where it was. Good value device but leave it be.

Yes this is a 3G capable phone and supports highspeed 3G on 900 and 2100MHz. Mobily uses 2100, you are good to go. However i would recommend you get a newer phone than this, like Xperia M or L or whatever, Xperia U is already old and slow due to low RAM of only 512MB.

Good question. I know there is sort of a beep when you receive message during a call but if its there when on silent i dont know. I do however know that this beep is only in the earpiece and is not audible to anyone else.

Me and my boyfriend had U's for two years and loved them! That LED strip .. Fabulous, how I enjoyed leaving my phone lying around. Storage space was a big issue though and we had to be fairly organised and going back and forth with stuff on the laptops Screen was excellent, sharp, fluid, lovely. Could have been brighter though XDA development was frantic so there's ROMs everywhere, most very excellent, good stable Jelly Beans now, people working on KitKat so we really enjoyed ourselves there - more than we have done with any other phone. And this is it really - its a hugely capable phone, with great online options - but you have to know how to, at least, root your phone, otherwise you can't stretch it like it wants to be. We're on S4 and Lg G2 now and still we keep our U's. We appreciate the quality of the screens, the ease of customising, and is build quality. Nothing broke ever. And that LED bar....ahhhhhh

I really like the size and price of this phone. However there seems to be a bug with the wifi. (google xperia U wifi problems) Sony does not a provide a solution and it appears that there will be no upgrade above android 4.0.4. Consequently I need to do a full reset every couple of months and re-load the operating system which takes a few hours.

If you are receiving an incoming call while you listen any music then the sound will crash.We cant hear any sounds until we re-start the phone. 2)Camera quality is very very poor.Even sony says it has 5 MP but it doesnt have quality of 2 MP camera. Its an old phone already and battery is very bad when wifi is on (excellent battery with wifi off though). Get a newer phone instead, if you want Xperia then get the Xperia L or Xperia C. Storage is not a problem if you dont mind using the USB OTG feature of Xperia U :) All you need is a USB OTG Cable and you can connect it to any Pen Drive :) something other smart phones cannot easily do and considering we get huge capacity pen drives today storage is not actually a problem... It took a little longer than it might have done, because they had to order in a new touchscreen, but they processed it as priority when it was in. sorry to say you are clueless. Its not the number of apps but the type of apps, and how much advertizing they do by running in the background, or daemons installed. My daughter can install only 20 apps on her tablet or phone before bogging down, while i can easily have 50+ and same performance as when it was brand new. I have a friend who installed all the chat and free calls apps on her phone, Skype, Viber, Yahoo messenger, WeChat, Line, Kakaotalk, Watsapp, you name it. Of course her phone wasnt working well, barely working at all, all those apps run constantly in the background, you cant blame the phone for that. First rule for hanging/crashing phones is to uninstall antivirus and anti malware, and do not install from downloaded APKs. If you do then blame yourself for being less gifted, not the phone.

I thought this phone was great (except that it didn't take an SD card) That was until one day it just decided not to charge for me, which means all my videos, pictures, contacts...everything is trapped inside it. I have only had the phone for a few months. I have been to 3 different places to see if my information can be recovered, but no luck. I really do not recommend this phone. I dont understand the complaints about battery, my Xperia U has the best battery of all smartphones i had, it can last 3 to 4 days on normal usage, and easily lasts a day of somewhat heavy usage. The problem is wifi, it drains enormous amounts of battery juice if wifi is kept on during standby and will just barely last the day, so i recommend to turn on Extended Standby Mode, or use the quicktoggle widget to turn off wifi manually for even more battery saving. If you are a 3G mobile internet user then Xperia U is an extremely good phone since the wifi drain issue will not bother you anyway plus HSDPA is usually faster than wifi, a win-win situation for this phone. My U is stable and reliable, no crash, and no hang except when using Chrome browser - i have to use the default Android browser to get smooth browsing. Very satisfied Xperia U user here, i came from a high end quadcore 1080p phone and was planning to get a new high end phone again soon but im so satisfied with the U that i may cancel my plans to buy Xperia Z1 Mini.

Terrible phone, extremely laggy after ICS update. Mine is so slow and crashes so often the battery cover is loose, so many times I remove it to unfreeze it. Some calls are impossible to answer, the time for the button to show is so long the calls go to voice mail. Others don't even have time for showing person name or image. I've reseted my Xperia U more than a couple of times in a year, and a few time latter it's lousy again.

This is my first smartphone, and despite the amazing experience in the first couple of weeks, I got to say this a pathetic buy. I bought this phone for around USD 300 about a year ago, and honestly, this phone embarrassed me many times in front of my friends with much inferior feature phones. Basic things like opening up the dialer app, making and receiving calls are like a Herculean task. The battery is shitty, the loud speaker is muffled and crappy, whole UI lags like anything, camera sometimes gives you okay-ish pics in strong light and sometimes fucks the whole thing up. It would be better if we don't talk about the low light performance. RAM was advertised to be as 512 MB, but the maximum available is around 340 MB at anytime. The only good things are the high PPI display and the LED notification bar. My brother's Lumia 520, which costs you a cool USD 100 lesser, outperforms this garbage in almost everything.

That was my first smartphone,an despite some initial happiness, a buy that i regretted much. My advice is to stay away from it! I have used it for a while on android2.3 and i think it was the time i was getting used to the smartphone idea, i believe that worked reasonably. But then i was happy to see the official ics 4.0,update (one of the reasons i bought this phone was the promise of the upgrade), and i readily joined the new android version. It was a hell:immediately a bug in the wifi would make it stuck to on so that very often the only way to connect to wifi was doing a reboot;maybe i had never used much gps before, but when comparing to my friend's i was often laugh because mine took hours longer to make the fix; Then over time phone became unusable even for basics tasks like calling or sending sms. I found then it was lack of ram causing the issue, and the facebook application growing demand; battery duration which has never been great, fell under the 8hours threshold: i had to start recharging it at work. Fed up with those limitations, i started to play with custom roms, and i finally found experience2.0 which at least fixed the wifi bug and improved response of the launcher. Disabling widgets, facebook, whatsapp, google+ and all other thing could pop notifications, the system became reasonably useful... Still my friends were si fed up with my complaints that they gave me a nexus4... Then the xperia u was relegated to backup device. I have finally stopped using it for anything "smart", and that's

im from india. i purchased this mobile and upgraded the phone to ICS right away so i had no experience on how the phone works with Gingerbread. however recently when i had a few issues with the touch screen and performance i contacted the service center regarding this. they then downgraded the phone back to gingerbread after service. now with GB running the performance is brilliant. but however the ease of use which i enjoyed in ICS missing as GB is not very user friendly. but the performance of GB is unmatched. so i suggest people not to upgrade to ics and use gingerbread to avoid poor performance and battery backup.

Have had this for about a year, its one of the first versions of sony experias, its kinda heavy for such a small phone (but Ive dropped it a number of times already so I guess its durable), it slow, and freezes from time to time, and it rearanges icons on you home screen when it sees fit. I have to agree. I know some people are managing to get on well with ICS, but I tried countless resets to default etc and it was still slow and buggy. I'm sure the way ahead is rooting and custom roms, but for those not so inclined, GB is solid and quick. In the end my phone had its touchscreen repaired and as part of the service process it was reverted to GB, and it's great now. Quicker camera, faster GPS lock, actually responds when a call comes in, etc etc. It is also possible to do your own downgrade without unlocking bootloader/rooting, you just need flashtool and the GB rom image to use - but do at own risk, and you may find a few quirks (e.g. system apps going into crash loops) until you do a defaults.

Just degrade your phone's Android OS to GB 2.3.7 if it's in ICS. This will save you from the headache. If it is GB 2.3.7 then kindly go for warranty. This phone works great on GB not ICS.

Phone is realy shit. It's very slow. Sometimes it is just blocking. Often you are not able to pick up, just because the slide switch does not appear on time. So you see you have a call, but you can not take it. And switching between the apps - good luck. It is realy realy bad. Just to check something in internet - take your time. Display is good.

XU is better than XJ but do not think of upgrading the OS. Let it be. Upgrade it at your own risk. 4get about external memory card. It supports USB on-the-go. I have been using xperia u for about 4 months now and it's running smoothly without problems. It's on Android GB 2.3.7. It runs almost every current game like Temple Run 2, Angry birds and my favorite game-FIFA 14. I'm rocking it here.

I had this phone for almost a year. I did not experience any malfunctions. The camera was good. Video is great! just adjust the settings if its night time or day time to capture nice photo. one thing I really like this phone is the bravia engine, smooth in typing message and the 3d surround. The downside is the memory. 8gb (5.6gb user) and the 512 ram (312 ram user). Overall this phone is good for a price range og 800sr..

Almost certainly not. A post has been circulated suggesting it might, but it's probably fake (why would Google announce big news via Facebook?). The Novathor chip is no longer a supported product, so it would be unlikely for Sony to produce or have access to updated drivers etc. Can the community do something? Perhaps, but probably just elements of 4.4 tacked on to 4.0.4, not important things like the low-memory kernel 4.4 reputedly has.

Mine's gone back to be repaired today. The dreaded touchscreen failure. Tried with both Gingerbread and ICS, I really hoped it was a software issue but it pretty clearly wasn't. Love the phone, truly hope it comes back with a new lease of life, but having to tap several times to get any response and certain areas of the screen completely non-functional wasn't helpful.

you should'nt update your phone, as i have used ICS for like a month and it made experia U quite a slow phone,mostly it freezes during incoming calls, and phone lags alot! even in basic applications such as messaging,then i asked sony customer people to again update my phone and when i got my phone back it had gingerbread AOS, and that really made me happy as this works best with gingerbread, so be happy with it, else it would be too hard to use phone. I have been using this phone for a year now. It came with android gingerbread and I had a really nice experience with it. Highended games like Most wanted and fifa13 worked smoothly with absolutely no lag. Yes the screen size is a bit small and the video quality is also not that good. But dual core processor is an advantage which would compensate the above flaws for gamers like me. Well I upgraded it to 4.0.4 a couple of weaks back and now the phone lags even while opening contacts. Only advantage is that battery management is excellent. I would advice all the users of xperia U not to upgrade the phone and carry on with gingerbread.

You can't have a phone that's lagging when you're trying to make a call. Works good after resetting the phone, but after a week lagging is back...without installing any applications...like skype or torch And after 14 months touch screen failed to respond...! Dear all Xperia U users. I have xperia U from last one year, Initially it was coming with gingerbread now I updated it into ICS and Now it is running at ICS from last four or five months. I have faced lot of lagging problem with this phone specially to do phone calls I faced lot of lagging. Lot of people write that after updated to ICS they are not able to use this phone due to lagging or hang problem. Here I told all of u some suggestion and I already applied those suggestions on my phone itself and now it was running so much smoothly compare to as all of u mentioned. First of all, everyone control ur expectation on this phone as it has only 512 mb ram and running with comparatively older cortex A9 dual core processor. Firstly all of u reset ur phone ie factory reset(everyone which are running with gingerbread and ICS both) it will taken some time to complete the reset procedure, during reset ur phone will be restarted but remember to back up all ur data b4 reseting. After reset u will get back to its initial position,at that time u r able to find all application which was installed with the phone after its new purchase or after updated to ICS. Everybody plz reset ur phone and see the result after that u all installed limited application coz it is not like a high end device and only connect internet on those time when u needed and always restarted the phone onece in a day. If u sync all ur email and facebook at a time then this phone runs little slowly but this speed is also not bad as like b4 reseting. Then after use internet kindly disable ur sync process and I am sure that all of u are able to find good result. Games are also running almost smmothly like temple run, subway surfer, some other car racing game, angry bird etc. In ICS walkman application is so much beautiful and I think everybody should try this at ICS. Lastly dont forget this phone has so much higher ppi(288 pixel per inch) compare to recent times phones and its disply clearity is awesome. Much of the used memory is "cached", i.e. stored ready for instant access in case an application needs it again. If you launch something else that needs the space, it'll take it. Although more memory is always good, so long as miracles are not expected, Linux in many ways works best if memory is full rather than empty. Bear in mind most people's experience of memory management is Windows, which is of course pretty ghastly, and the scenario described would be a real problem. That said, another 512MB RAM wouldn't have gone amiss.

I very much agree. I got this phone because I don't tend to use most of the features of higher-spec phones so I thought this one would do just well for me, the review was also good. But especially after updating it to Android 4 (which was always intended for this phone by Sony, from launch) it's absolutely ridiculous how slow it's gotten. It was slow on Android 2 (.3 or .7, can't remember) but it's just outrageous now. Everything is slow. Hell, often I have to try multiple times just to undo the screen lock until the phone manages that. phone call? I have gotten used to waiting an additional few seconds before talking because the phone takes that long to start the call. Restarting the phone everyday, sometimes more often, helps a bit but it doesn't remove the problem. And I really don't use the phone for a ton, I don't play games, I don't make videos. I mainly use it for phone calls, SMS, Google Maps, synching a few e-mail accounts (in power-saving mode because the battery lasts barely a day otherwise) and reading on my Kindle app. I very much regret getting this phone.

Do you use ICS? I have noted similar behaviour, but am 99% sure in my case it's software-based, not hardware failure. If the phone is locked and re-woken, swiping my pattern on the lockscreen is flawless, and tapping can be reliable for a short time after before the rot starts setting in again. Testing with a touchscreen tester can yield interesting results, as if the polling of the screen goes bad sometimes, presumable due to overload. If it was a hardware issue, it would almost certainly never work properly and certainly not be affected by time since wake. Of course, your experience may be different.

Hi I've been using this phone since Sep 2012. It was on GB at start then I updated it to ICS. ICS works well on this device but I am having an issue i.e. Android OS is eating SX U's battery. After reading all bad comments here I have realised that those complaining are those who did the upgrade and those who did not do their research well. 4 Gb is cool for me. I've had the device for 6 months now. The default gingerbread works fine but had too much limitations for me. I upgraded it to ICS, the phone got much slower after a short while (and I try not to overinstall useless apps, I even disabled many of the original sony bloatware with TI). I had to root it because the phone got unusable after 1-2 months in ICS. After 3 roms I found the 'sweetspot' with much better battery life, smoothness and responsiveness. Still, the low ram on the device makes Greenify and some memory managment app mandatory. If you don't want to get your hands dirty with root permisions and flashing, then you definitively won't get the real potential this device has.

CONNECT to sony pc suite via usb - click repair soft ware if need be ..sony pc suite will also tell you if your phone has the latest software -- may offer you upgrade .. if usb connection is not available - click on UPDATE centre on the handset when connected to WIFI.. explore your handset .. u can always factory reset after saving data and back up .. but sony u is NOT bees knees handset .. lags .. misdials .. malfuntions even on basic functions .. DONT GIVE UP ..since you have it- make it work .. down load full user manual and trouble shooting guides via google search .. exploration is the name of the game - for each handset play is the same..apologies "come september " film title song ..

agree, this got limited memory and buggy update, and a clear tested update isn't aired yet or probably it never will either, So if you Said Samsung or htc, or lg or even meego.... it was fine, but nokia/Microsoft.... thats just going full retard.... those phones similar in price to xper. u not even got mkv,flv playback or a file manager yet... thats double retard. besides, only a very limited amount of apps run in those due to ram size limitation, not because they are slow or anything coz they just got 512mb ram and not 1 gb.. now thats triple retard... and if your phone got some unsupported file type in it, the only way to delete it is by connecting to a pc.. thats just....so wtf... just speaking my mind, carry on. and, one more thing: nokia took on Windows os not coz it was the best or even good, it was becoZ, their then new CEO StephenElop (former Microsoft employee) chooses so. Wi-Fi became good after upgrade to android 4.0.4. Connect the phone to pc and select INSTALL PC COMPANION when asked, then you can update your phones software and things should work better.

So I used it for 5 months now and I'm nearly getting depressed if I really have to use it one more day. It turned into a demon and started to live its own life! To all those recently wondering/complaining about the available memory not being 512MB, this is perfectly normal. Like most computers, your phone reserves a certain amount of the memory for the Android system (so that it never gets usurped) and hardware devices. The graphics chip that the Xperia U uses reserves a bit more than some do, though, so available memory may end up being a little lower than on some other devices with 512MB RAM fitted.

Mine had Wifi issues with Gingerbread, had no choice but to update. It wasnt terible after update anyway, some more stuttering sometimes, could live with it. Overall its a good phone, camera is relatively fast and sharp, the display extremely sharp and the compact size is still better than all newer midrangers. Sometimes i cant find it in my pockets because its so small.

The GPS do not work quite well. If you are using Wi-fi, there is no way the GPS can be located. Only can locate when data plan is enabled. I dunno about other people but that is the case for me

seriously dude, shit miro is not even close to xperia u. hd,16m, bravia display in gallery, fwvga resolution, Mali400 gpu. but I recommend u gu for galaxy core.... its awesome and got jellybean and micri sd slot, plus all benefits of xperia u

You can not downgrade from ICS to Gingerbread. If you want to confirm please visit Sony Centre or call Sony's customer care. Might be they had some information, weather u can downgrade or not. I am using X-U with gingerbread, m enjoying and will not upgrade to ICS. Because I know that Sony has not officially announce upgradation to ICS.

Its almost true, the display is wider in portrait mode on Xperia Go/Miro/E. Those are also 3.5 inch, but since they are 4:3 and U is 16:9 they will be much wider, that could lead some uninformed individuals to think that Xperia U has a smaller display. But in any way you see it, the Xperia U display is vastly superior to Go/Miro/U, much clearer, good ppi.

Sony Xperia U is a great phone, I have good news for Sony users.ICS update. 100 ftf version is great, its reasonably quick with minimal lag, the battery drain issue seemed to have been solved.Ice cream sandwitch is a NEW experience, sticking to gb is a sign of cowardice and a pathetic user experience. Just install xperia flash tools and download ics ftf file specifically the 100 version ; details are in androidlegend.com on updating xperia U. Bye!

Xperia U is definitely phone for you , I am also using it mostly for video calling and web browsing, I would just suggest you to use some other apps instead Skype and viber , try with LINE , WE CHAT and TANGO

The only absent feature is micro card slot. And the phone is also not upgradable to any further platforms of android. All in all it is a nice handset and its worth the money. :)

1. 6.1.1.B.1.100 Is the best of the lot when talking about ICS on XU. Never ever upgrade to 6.1.1.B.1.10 (Its a piece of shit, delivered to worldwide XU users) 2. Downgrade to GB .184 firmware if you face wierd issues after upgrading. This was a good stable release by sony.

I have been using this phone for about 9 months now. Before I upgraded to Android 4.0.4 it worked flawlessly. Right after I upgraded to Ice cream sandwich, from time to time phone freezes, touchscreen is slow and when using some demanding apps (like internet, games) the phone overheats. ICS UPDATE IN XPERIA U. there are so many problems, ill list the top few. first of all, ics is hell 'n xperia u not because the phone got low specs, but due to Sony releasing a less optimised and buggy version of ics. and not even bothering about releasing a good update. 1.multitasking is gone, you cant run music player and firefox with couple of running tabs together, and send a message at the same time, one of them force close, too poor for a dual core 512mb device. works in gb though. 2. camera clarity drops to poor from good, besides that, takes atleast 15 secs to focus, on top of that, the camera takes the photo after the flash has come and gone, if you use focus. night photography is an utter nightmare. 3. video player shows scales in both default player and other players using hw mode. A result of low ram or low processing speed. the ics uses too much ram that the players cant utilise the hardware properly. not just in hd, but also in wvga videos. 4. takes a loooot of time to get charged compared to gb. 5. overall performance of the phone is gone, you can no longer get the snap second quickness of gb in xperia u. 6. free ram drops atleast by 40 mb. and dont believe if someone said ics through pc suite update is great. I did and ended up in service center after a month of miserable smartphone xperience. right now, multitasking with whatsapp, wechat, opera and music player. i'm happy. I havent tried the. 89 ics version or the cyanogen updates that are available through unofficial updates. and I dont know if its really good as some claims. I am horrified enough with the official update and donot plan to visit the service center right now, if those too turn out bad. asfaik update should make the phone beter, not make it worse. im talking about the official 6.1,1.b.10 update available through pc suite. if anyone say it is better or good as gb, feel free to electrocute him.

Hey I did it... I've downgraded my ICS to Gingerbread. I went to Sony service center and I told them that after updating to ICS I'm facing so many problems... So they've downgraded it and they said that by default software of U is Gingerbread. You can simply go and ask them to do it 4 free if it's under warrenty.

After updating my xperia U to ICS its gets literally heat up like anything upto 45 degree celcius even while just texting or using net and gets laged or hanged occasionally batery life still sucks have to recharge 3 times a day , dont know wtf should i do with the phone now !
