vivo X5Max - User Reviews

  • Vivo X5Max hands down is the winner.

  • Which is good in audio quality htc beats audio or vivo x5 max ?

  • Good research

  • So you don't have a Vivo service center in entire city? I far as I know Vivo have a lot of service centers through out India. Or are you suggesting Vivo does not have replacement battery? I understand X5Max's sound quality over earphones is epic, and I cannot simply hear anymore to other ordinary smartphones.

  • Rishiguru, I live in Baroda, India. Getting an OEM battery is out of question here. Few compatible are available, which the service center will not touch and will have to be taken to a road side kiosk for fitting. I am not sure I will be able to enjoy my pristine music experience any more. I have not put any update so far in last 2 1/2 years. I saw price of V20 as 22.5k without B&O earpiece and 28.5K with it (V20a). As far as I know the price difference is only due to earpiece and the installed software.

  • As far as I know to have the PD1408F_EX_B_2.2.3 software for Vivo X5Max you have to have a visit to their service center. This because this update will format all the internal memory, join the two memory partitions into one unified 16 GB, and then install the software. This is not possible by a OTA. However this update does not mess with the superb default music player with purple HiFi enable button. :) I remember this update was previously available for download from their Global Vivo website. I don't know if it is available now. Please check. For battery also you have to visit the service center. Where do you live?

  • You are absolutely right. Vivo X5Max is still a benchmark when it comes to high fidelity sound in smartphones. This phone single handedly compelled me to drop all my prized HiFi portable music players. I have also found X5Max not suitable for very high impedance over the ear headphones. But it can very easily drive any audiophile earphones and all low impedance headphones like Edifier H840. On the other hand smartphones like LG V20 or Lenovo Vibe X3 have much powerful headphone amplifiers, as many as 3 for Vibe X3. So they are able to drive very high impedance headphones of over 300 ohms. I own a Vibe X3 & have heard the V20 extensively, and both have formidable HiFi sound quality to boast. But to me both misses out by a notch in terms of the signature see-through ultra crystal clear sound of X5Max. Lets just say the sound signature tuning as done Vivo on X5Max just match my taste where vocals take the utmost priority.

  • To-> Rishi, GeekayRenjit, musicfan and others.. Please help me apart from visiting the service centre how can I update the software to PD1408F_EX_B_2.2.3 to solve the internal memory partition issue. As previously mentioned this is an MPT software and not available for download or OTG. How far I could upgrade the android kitkat (4.4.4) so that I should not be messing the default imusic player and licence issues of FLAC. Finally, shortly the battery may go kaput, where can I get a genuine battery and where the installation could be carried out.

  • i own both vivo x5 max and a lg v20 cleaner sound with big stage in x5 max while v20 will prove to hedphones champ in my audio tecnica m30 x v20 gets it to vibrate x5max struggles. if u listen to music via earphones go 4 x5max if headphone then lgv20.

  • Can I upgrade the android version of my X5max

  • superb

  • Rishi sir, is lg G4 has good sound, music.is lg v20 comparable to x5max, please reply, thank you

  • Why my vivo x5 max can't open Album.It shows"Unfortunatelly,Album had stop"

  • sir, is there any video player with good sound as power amp music player

  • My audio file is flac 24 bit compression ratio is 8.

  • The bundled headphone with Vivo X5max is just ok. I do not like it much either. I have no idea how Jays 5 sound but if amazon india reviews are to be followed they are not that good. I will say give Cowon EK2 or SounMagic E10 a try. They are cheap earphones with good audio performance and will not hurt your wallet. However we are dealing with sound quality and its subjective analysis which will vary from person to person.

  • Both file formats should sound good. But given a preference I would choose FLAC as it is lossless.

  • All my songs(flac,mp3) did not clear through headphones(company headphone, a Jay's five). Pls help what should I do?.

  • Rishi I just got Vivo x5 max. Please suggest which type of songs is good for this mobile(Flac 24 bit 22000 or 320kbps)

  • Thanks Guru

  • Both represents the same phone. :) X5Max is Vivo`s flagship phone released in Jan, 2015 in India. If you have bought it for audio reasons get some decent audiophile grade in-ear earphones. However X5Max can drive many low impedance over the ear headphones like Edifier H840 with ease.

  • Just now i ordered Vivo x5max in amazon website for just 14990. What is difference between Vivo x5max and vivo x5 max?.Because Vivo x5max price is 14990 and Vivo x5 max price is 32980.

  • Great to see the latest software version of Vivo X5Max directly available for download from Vivo Global website. This is an authentic website, anybody can download and install with their eyes closed. This will greatly benefit people who live in countries where Vivo have no presence. After all in my eyes X5Max still remains as their most iconic flagship ever launched internationally. None of the other handsets l used like X5Pro, XShot, X3S, V1Max, V3Max have that feel or aura in it. X5Max is also audiophiles nirvana. Only the Lenovo Vibe X3 & LG V20 can hold a candle to X5Max in terms sheer headphone audio quality.

  • X5Max upgrade package PD1408F_EX_B_2.3.3 (MTP Version) ONLY for Thailand Malaysia India Indonesia Myanmar (MTP Version) version phones Time:2017-03-02 Language:Multi Language

  • Vivo have presence in India. Almost all Chinese manufacturers do as it is their second biggest market. Hence I have no idea about this 3rd party websites who provide unauthorized firmware updates.

  • Thank you RishiGuru. I have found this website that offer to download the firmware. It costs 25 dollars. Some of you did you try this site and services?

  • Unfortunately NO. The newest PD1408F_EX_B_2.3.3 is only available from Vivo and it is a MTP update. Hence a visit to service center is must.

  • Hi guys, I have an X5Max but I have a big problem: I would do the upgrade to PD1408F_EX_B_2.3.3 but I live in Italy and here there aren't Vivo's service center to update to this version.. I wrote to vivoglobal service but they don't have other possibilities. have you any suggestions how to solve this? thanks in advance.

  • I am music lover. Is it worth to buy in 2017 or please suggest good audio file mobile under 20000. Thanks in advance.

  • I am musical lover. Is it worth to buy in 2017 or please suggest any other mobile under 20000.Thanks in advance

  • I was truly excited about LG G5 with B&O Hi-Fi Plus (AFD-1200) module during launch. Later I had the chance to audition and found B&O module to provide a definite improvement in G5's audio quality through 3.5 mm audio output. :) Internally B&O module ships with the new ESS Sabre ES9028C2M (DAC) with 129 dB SNR, 2 dB improvement over its previous generation ESS Sabre ES9018. We find ES9018 in Vivo X5Max & Lenovo Vibe X3. The newly released ESS Sabre 9602 headphone amplifier can also be found in this B&O module. The previous ESS Sabre 9601 of X5Max had very good SNR of 122 dB, but severely lacked in amplification department. Hence Vivo in X5Max had to use it as I/V converter and the job of amplification was given to Texas Instruments OPA1612 acting as a headphone amplifier. However with Sabre 9602, ESS was able to dramatically improve the amplification capability while keeping the SNR at 122 dB. To have a more clear picture below are the audio paths: Vivo X5Max "HiFi": Snapdragon 615 --> ESS Sabre ES9018-K2M (DAC) --> ESS Sabre ES9601 (I/V conversion) --> TI OPA1612 (Headphone amplifier) --> 3.5mm audio jack B&O Module (LG G5 ): Snapdragon 820 --> ESS Sabre 9028C2M (DAC) --> ESS Sabre ES9602 (Headphone amplifier) --> 3.5mm audio jack Coming to the topic of subjective analysis of LG G5 + B&O module, I used X5Max as the marker. In regards to sound quality I found both to be neutral sounding. ESS dacs are generally neutral sounding, but B&O has a slightly softer tonal behavior of the two. Both produces crisp & clear sounding highs while mids on B&O are less clinical. But where B&O mostly suffered where the lows and repeatedly I felt it lacked the drive to produce that hard hitting & accurately timed lows. X5Max have more driving power of the two, and is more suitable candidate to drive audiophile grade earphones. However you can forget using the big headphones with B&O as my Sennheiser HD 598 sounded anemic at best while with X5Max there was a slight improvement in driving capability. Nonetheless it was clear to me as both X5Max & B&O are designed to be paired with earphones not big headphones. Better get a Lenovo Vibe X3 if you want real driving capability plus audio quality. In the end of the near three hour audition, I had to give the crown back to X5Max. With B&O you will get equal treatment in mids & highs but lows are where X5Max shine. For example with my Fiio EX1's I can feel X5Max was producing a more accurate & bottomless bass and those 13 mm drivers are really working to produce more thrust. Not so with B&O. Later one renowned Chinese audiophile website measured & reveled the LG G5 with B&O module is able to produce a maximum output level of - 5 dB, while that of X5Max was higher at -1.4 dB. So now I know X5Max have more driving force than B&O module but nonetheless it was a good try from both LG & B&O. :)

  • How is LG G3 in terms of audio playback.??

  • LG V20. Will cost you 50 grand in India. :) All these phones come with ESS Sabre audio DACs, the best in the world.

  • Both these models seems to have availability issues in India. I find neither of them in stock for quite sometime now. Any other models on par with these ???

  • There are two actually: 1) Vivo X5Max 2) Lenovo Vibe X3 Buy any of them and you will be equivalently happy audio wise. Both of them has no FM Radio.

  • Which is the best Smartphone for audio (audiophile standard) currently available in Indian market??

  • Does it have FM Radio

  • If you are an audio enthusiast and love music, then YES. The sound quality through earphones are abnormally good for a smartphone. PERIOD. Pair high quality earphones like FiiO EX1, Sennheiser Momentum InEar headphones to reach the TRUE potential of Vivo X5Max's sound quality.

  • is it worth to buy vivo x5 max now ?? i am getting good deal in14k INR . please let me know at earliest

  • I have updated but noticed no major changes.

  • Received a new "B_2.3.4" OTA update yesterday. :) Previously I updated my Vivo X5Max to "B_2.3.3" MTP software update which requires visiting their service center. The new 2.3.4 is a 40 MB update which brings two new things on table: 1) Optimized media library scanning 2) Updated Android Security patch for March, 2016 X5Max runs on Android KitKat, and this update drastically improves the security of the phone because it was already lagging a lot behind in terms of security updates. However I was expecting the Dec, 2016 security update. But it is good to see now Vivo is taking the security aspect of their phones quite seriously and providing updates. Chinese manufacturers are not not known for such acts. Also now we get the option to see the Android security patch installed which was previously missing. Go to: Settings -> More settings -> About phone -> Version You will now find an extra Android security patch level newly added to this view. Good to see the progress and transparency. Also now with better optimized media scanning capability X5Max has become slightly faster to scan and detect my 128 gigs of lossless audio FLAC file collection in memory card and internal memory. :)

  • Good to know that you finally found peace with Vivo X5Max. :-) The "B_2.3.3" MTP update is a must for all X5Max users as its not only gives you the full power over its internal memory but also the whole user experience gets slight improvement over the previous version. I fond the iMusic player app after upgrade to be more seamless as its database can now effortlessly keep track of my near 128 GB lossless audio FLAC file collection. Also options for USB connectivity with PC is improved, etc. Neutron is the most revered audiophile centric music app for Android. It uses its own audio software codec pack for superior audio just like Vivo's iMusic and does not rely on Android's audio codec. It is a bit clunky to operate in comparison to say the most popular Poweramp music palyer but nonetheless audiophiles take the pain for audio quality improvements. I have extensively compared Neutron vs iMusic over X5Max and to my ears both sound the same. Hence I have returned back to iMusic due to its simplicity and cohesiveness with Vivo's Funtouch OS. On the other hand I use both Neutron & Foobar2000 in my other audiophile centric phone Lenovo Vibe X3 as it does not ship with any audio player (other than Google Play music). Below are a list of audio related apps that can be Hi-Fi option enabled in Vivo X5Max: 1) Youtube 2) 4Shared Music 3) MX Player 4) Poweramp 5) Google play music 6) n7player 7) tunein radio 8) Neutron 9) Mortplayer music 10) KKBOX 11) Spotify 12) Musixmatch 13) JOOX 14) Shazam 15) Music 16) Gaana 17) Saavn 18) Hungama 19) Raaga 20) Music Player 21) Stafaband 22) Sound Hound 23) Gudang Lagu 24) LINE MUSIC, 25) Music Player (Leopard V7) Hope this helps!!!

  • Hi After having solved my imusic [default app from vivo] issue , now next is the issue which is finding a portable headphone [open type] having the same sound stage as audio technica M50x and M40x [i have both] and yet portable - any suggestions please ? Currently using Sennheiser PX 100-II for taking to office and back but still the sound not as good as AT-m40x or M50x Any suggestions please ?

  • 1)i got the update : PD1408F_EX_B_2.3.3 from the service center and it fixed the storage issue - thanks RishiGuru 2) Sadly the i music issue which i started my posts from , did not get resolved by mtp update but by another application - NEUTRON From Neutron code limited it supports HI-FI option [settings->sounds->hifi-> enable neutron] also samba sharing is supported [poweramp does not support samba as the option will not be visible when choosing the file and doing "open as audio" in es file explorer] So my issue is resolved for the i music app - infact Neutron [i have full paid version which is the default for both local and samba shares] Hope this helps

  • for all x5 max owners - i have the great news ! 1)First i went to the service center and got the mtp update :PD140BF_EX_B_2.3.3 which has resolved the storage issue [used space 5,26gb and available space 10.74 gb] 2) my issue with i music app which was closing when trying to select a new song in es file explorer [ samba sharing ] is resolved also Not by the mtp update but by this great app [Neutron from Neutron code limited] which has the hi-fi option enabled [SETTINGS->SOUNDS->HIFI -> ENABLED NEUTRON] now and also it's my default app for choosing the song from my networked windows pc [samba sharing THRU ES FILE EXPLORER] and also for the music stored on local storage SOMETHING WHICH EVEN THE POWERAMP FAILED TO DO DESPITE BEING HIFI ENABLED AS WELL[poweramp will work for local storage of music only (no samba sharing)- will not be visible in the app menu of es file explorer when you choose the file and do "open as audio" [poweramp being missing in the list of apps] ] 3)for battery issue - just get a power bank and this will fix the battery issue to enjoy this phone for hours on end . Now my x5Max is ALIVE AND KICKASS - an true Audiophile phone NOW! Hope this helps the owners of x5Max and very special thanks to RishiGuru God Bless You all !

  • Nice definition of Hifi. I have bought two x5max as it is a true hifi phone. I never believed phones can produce high quality audio but X5Max is an exception. This phone has become a collectors item for me just for its audio quality. Believe me guys when i say this phone is an audiophiles dream.

  • Truly revealing and detailed technical analysis of Vivo X5max. Great work rishiguru. You are truly knowledge when it comes to mobile technology and especially audio.

  • Your requirement is not clear to me? You have already have a Vivo V3Max, a great phone for its price. Is V3Max able to show FLAC metadata like name of the song, album, artist and album art in the default player while playing? I don't know Vivo have either solved this issue with their recent updates, as I simply don't care. When you own the best audiophile centric smartphone Vivo X5Max you don't listen to other phones as you ears gets habituated to the supreme audio quality of X5Max. I own a Lenovo Vibe X3 and my honest opinion, don't buy that phone. Vibe X3 have good specs and great audio but the software is buggiest of all. I have stopped using my Vibe X3 after its buggy Android 6.0 update. As for ZTE Axon 7, I have experienced it for a day and it is a superb device. It's an all-rounder just like V3Max, just more powerful and more expensive. Axon 7 is a notch above V3Max. Sound quality wise, objectively & subjectively X5Max is still the best. Next in the line comes Vibe X3 (Lollipop version), then Axon 7 closely followed by V3Max. X5Max & Vibe X3 comes with more expensive & performance oriented ESS Sabre audio DACs & Texas Instruments headphone amplifiers in discrete configuration. Where as Axon 7 & V3Max uses cheaper integrated audio solution provided by AKM. In the end for a casual smartphone user habituated in listening songs on Samsung Galaxy S7 or LG G5 will find both Axon 7 & V3Max sound quality over headphones to be heavenly. To an audiophile though X5Max is the one to have.

  • Rishiguru, as X5Max is no longer available in the market I bought a V3Max which I consider also is a super hit model. Even this model is becoming rare due to the depleting stock of V3Max and further to that sales persons wearing blue Vivo T-shirts pushing their new bride V5. They surreptitiously avoid performance based queries regarding V5. Now what I wanted to know is, my V3Max is able to play all my FLAC collection through the default player. I can not afford LG V20. Now I have 2 choices to fulfil my requirement either I go far Lenovo Vibe X3 or to wait until 15 December when ZTE is launching its flagship Axon 7 in India. Please share your opinion which according to me would be a better option.

  • This phone is not for all, especially spec crazy people like you. This phone is built for audiophiles. I was in lookout for this phone for well over a decade, finally i have a phone which does justice to my earphones.

  • i understand your frustrations of not owning a vivo x5max, bcoz if you owned this gem, you would not have said so. my dad owns this phone and i rate it's user experence even better than my vivo v3max. many phones now have audio dacs but all dacs are not same. both v3max & x5max have dedicated dacs, but listened to both and you can feel the difference in quality. lastly x5max have respectable battery backup, read the review here and you will understand. for my dad the phone easily lasts for a day.

  • Lol buddy, not everything in a phone is based on audio quality. No point harping over it again and again. A poor phone with poor battery life, poorly optimized OS software that leaks battery every 2 minutes, with maximum playback time of 3 hours with getting quite heated. This phone is not something you should recommend even to those looking forward to buy audiophile grade phones. Functionally, this phone is a cripple. The only saving grace is audio quality, which if listened over poor shoddy headphones, will sound worse as usual. There are much better all round options available - Vibe X3, Mi Note, Le Eco Max, Mi 5, and some other phones with dedicated DAC that offer a much better value compared to this grandpa.

  • You can go for Sennheiser Momentum Wireless headphones to achive good sound. Read some reviews of this headphone and if it suits your taste buy one. Personally I an not a great fan of Bluetooth headphones.

  • i do not think so bacoz of license issue as i music can play flac and all formats with license issue but then the higher android OS have license issues for playing flac/ape etc So my view - it will never get updated to latest android OS

  • can it be upgraded to marshmallow ?

  • thank you Sir for your esteemed knowledge ! Can you please tell me - how to get the same pristine sound on top end bluetooth headphone True - ATH-M50x MG that i have - first time i got this and paired it with x5max and the effect is heavenly ! to say the least but the wires still bother me 1) Can i go for hi-res bluetooth headphone to pair it with x5max - since the chipset of this phone is advanced i guess the digital signal [HQ] will be interpretted by the hi res circuit of the bluetooth headphone to get me the same sound as this wired combo of x5max+ath-m50x MG ? 2)OR Can i go in for mobile phones with 'Hi-res audio' support which can feed the sound to the compatible hi res bluetooth headphones ? money is not an issue here - i need the true pristine sound wthout the wires - please guide me

  • After reading your post I do feel you have some misconceptions about the word HiFi (High Fidelity). Here are my two cents: 1) HiFi is no effect, it denotes music in it's truest form without any added effects. The aim here is to reproduce music as recorded in the studio. 2) By adding equalisers while listening music is adding additional effects to the orginal music, as it is allowing you to add more bass or treble effect, taking you further away from HiFi. 3) HiFi in any audio centric smartphone denotes the hardware (DAC + op-amps + headphone amplifiers) that converts the digital audio signal from your phone chipset (Snapdragon 615 here) to analog signal through 3.5 mm audio jack. Hence when you use this jack HiFi can be enabled. But when you are using a Bluetooth headset, digital audio is directly broadcasted from phone to you headset, and now the DAC + Headphone Amplifier of your Bluetooth headset is in charge. Hence as you are not using the high-end audio hardware of X5Max while using a Bluetooth headset, HiFi is not visible in display and the audio quality is completely under control of your headset. Hope this clears some of your doubts.:)

  • thanks for the suggestion - i tried that also making the poweramp the default one just like you mentioned but it did not work as es file explorer popped open the "choose app to open with" windows still . Now currently i have made VLC as the default from with in es file explorer's "choose app to open with" windows dialog box - but i am not happy that x5max being the great music phone does not have full imusic app with in built equalizer support ! Btw - VLC has the network browser built in but i like es file explorer Lastly - the hifi effect cannot be accessed with bluetooth headphones - that's another -ve for this phone ! , it works only on 'wired' headphones' Currently i am using ath-m50x at home , but when i travel i use bluetooth headphones still great sound if the bluetooth headphone is good enough ..... thank you all for the valuable suggestions Hope my observation helps all

  • Though I admire your love for music and to a certain extent the art of listening music over shared network, it can create a specific set of problems in a mobile phone. Two things come to my mind: 1) You are accessing your audio file over network (PC -> X5Max), which the iMusic app is playing. 2) At the same time when audio is continually streamed (PC -> X5Max) you want to additionally send commands (now, X5Max -> PC) to search and select a song via ES File Explorer app while music plays in background. And this implies bi-directional flow of data needs to happen simultaneously. Tough call. As you say PowerAmp music app have no issues with it, I suggest you change the default music player of X5Max, from iMusic to PowerAmp. Below are the steps: iManager -> App Manager -> Default app settings -> Default music software -> Select Power Amp. Hope this works for you. :)

  • thanks for the suggestion but the default file manager does not do network serach as all my music is on shared drive of my win 7 hp pc I access my network music files thru es file explorer and then play it via 'imusic' set as default app when i encounter this issue going to es file explorer to look for another song when it [imusic] stops playing the current song - it does not happen with poweramp but the poweramp cannot be accessed in app context menu when i do "open as audio or video whichever] - the list does not have poweramp appearing , had it been otherwise - imusic 'd not be an issue - poweramp only visible in the app context menu when trying to access 'local' content which poweramp has not been able to fix yet any suggestions ?

  • Use the default File Manager app provided rather than ES File Explorer app. You can choose music files through this default app and iMusic will play music as you desire, also in background. Music files should be properly categorized into artists, albums with album arts so that you never need any file explorer. You have the best music player in iMusic. Create playlist in iMusic as you desire and play the songs according to wish.

  • guys plz help me i have x5max - the imusic which plays music thru es file explorer selection , closes when i 'switch' to es file explorer to make another selection - sometimes it does not [keeps playing music in the background] , 99% this happnes and rarely it keeps playing the ongoing selection in the background [i use wired audio techina m50x MG edition with it] i do not want to use another app [like vlc etc] and point to note this works with any audio player [except imusic] i.e the app keeps playing the music in background while i browse for another selection in es file explorer How i switch app - while imusic playing in the app - i touch the bottom portion to bring up the window which shows open windows and options to make a selection and i select the es file explorer this is the only issue i am facing - any help please ?

  • hi raj, x5max is a great phone just go for it. It has beautiful amooled screen quality and the music sounds extraordinary in ears through headphones. you will not be able to fathom how good audio is until you hear it and yes use 320 kbps mp3. My dad simpliy loves this mobile.

  • Vivo V3Max is nowhere near Vivo X5Max in terms of sound quality over headphones and display quality. Forget not X5Max was their last flagship while V3Max is their current mid end device with much cheaper audio solution and normal quality LCD display to boast.

  • Is v3 max screen sound as good as x5max.

  • If you are a specs maniac then NO, Vivo X5Max is not for you. This phone is for multimedia enthusiasts, sublime audio quality and great display quality. A phone which sound great over INR 20K earphones will also sound better over INR 1K earphones. I have tested with Cowon EK2 available in India at INR 1.2K, they pair well and sound awesome with X5Max.

  • Thanks. Is it worth buying. How is screen quality. Volte. Is it good when using 1000rs headphones. Pose reply

  • Few points to note before buying Vivo X5Max: 1) Contains best audio hardware, hence best audio quality over headphones. 2) Bright & vibrant display with punchy colors, ideal for movies. Contains one on the best 5.5 inch, FullHD, Samsung Super AMOLED displays you can find. The same Samsung AMOLED display now comes with OnePlus 3. BTW Vivo, Oppo & OnePlus belongs to same owner BBK Electronics of China. 3) Flagship grade built quality. You hold it in you hand and you will feel the difference. 4) Still the thinnest phone in the world, everybody will notice the thinness instantly. 5) Comes with Snapdragon 615 which is a heat king. Fear not X5Max have excellent thermal solution embedded in this phone as its was their flagship phone. With full battery I once played a super heavy game Asphalt 8 until the battery went dry, except for getting heated near the volume rocker area where the Snap 615 is embedded, there were no other issues. X5Max comes with metal chassis and body, hence it absorbs the heat from the chipset and make sit work efficiently. Not a Motorola Moto G4 Plus fiasco here. Heavy games play super smooth with no frame drops for extended periods of time. 6) It does NOT comes with inherent support for VoLTE. That said with Relaince Jio SIM you will still be able to surf internet like any other 4G phone, but for VoLTE calls you need to use their Jio app. If VoLTE is must then i recommend Vivo V3Max as I am also using this phone. ---------- As an audio enthusiast I have owned all Vivo flagships at one point of time. Be it Vivo XShot, Vivo X5Pro or Vivo X3S the phone which shined above all of them is undoubtedly the Vivo X5Max. No doubt it was their most expensive offering in India at INR 33K launch price.

  • Thanks. Another question. Is the phone has heating issues how is screen quality. Is videos look great same as samsung note 3.is it supports volte. Pose reply as I want to buy this.

  • Currently their is NO phone on the international market that can achive the audiophile sound quality of Vivo X5Max. I use this phone with RHA earphones worth 20 thousand bucks and X5Max with HIFI 2.0 audio architecture is the best sounding over headphones.

  • hai rush guru. can you suggest me a super amoled fhd phone with x5 max type music qualities

  • hai. is vivo x3 max has heating issues as the same processor in yureka has high heating problem. how is screen quality. sound and video quality. is it hangs. is it worth buying.

  • As usual, great comparison between x5max and axon 7 and superb piece of writing. It is true that x5max have awesome sound, as my audiophile dad even admits it has the bar set above LG v10. The only pity is you do not realize how good x5max is until you have used a good pair of headphones with it. When I had my v3max I thought it had best sound, but when i listened to x5max i found what i was missing. I only hope vivo makes a true successor of this masterpiece.

  • I have successfully performed this update in nearest Vivo service center. This is a good update. After update: 1) You get back full control of the 16 GB internal memory. Before it was 2 GB for apps, now after update 12 GB. 2) memory card support of 128 gb as usual 3) My dad's X5Max and my vivo v3max have same level of smoothness in UI, and we are very happy with both.

  • I mainly watch movies in mp4 format. Mainly western and tamil movies. I use Mxplayer which virtually plays any video files with built in codec and HW acceleration. I prefer watching movies at full hd 1080p resolution. Vivo x5max has a 1080p amoled display which is great and is a perfect tool for watching movies on the go.

  • Plz can u tell me what kind of movies do u watch ?? And its resolution ? Formats ? I need a good phone for movies other than galaxy note

  • If you compare specs lenovo vibe x3 is the winner. But when it comes to user experience, vivo x5max is a more complete phone and a better choice. Previously i have learnt in the hard way that specs are not everything.

  • I bought my vivo x5max and took it straight to service center for this update. Guys over there was very welcoming and did the update free of cost. Software updates are free of cost at their service centers. I am a heavy user, installed many softwares and never run out of internal memory. I watch a lot of movies, so use the 128 gb card to store them. This phone has best screen to watch movies. I am currently appreciating my x5max more than v3max and use as primary device.

  • Great insight. After reading all your well versed, elaborated posts here, I had decided to have this X5Max. I already own a vivo V3max for few months which is a superb phone. Anyway after a weekof use i have observed few points of x5max A) Great display B) very fluid user experience C) sound through headphones is a revelation. I use to my v3max have best sound, but after you hear a x5max you can hear and feel the difference. I also own a lenovo x3 like you and i must add x5max have better tonal accuracy than vibe x3. D) Timeless design. I am from commercial design background and x5max have my highest regard in this. Seem to be billeted from a single piece of aluminum its external materials are more expensive than any phone i have seen till date. I don't know how i missed on x5max, but it the best you can have for audio and timeless design.

  • Had the honor to use ZTE Axon 7 for a day, courtesy one of my friends on visit to India. Sadly here, ZTE is not much bothered marketing their products, so we do not have the liberty to lay hands on their new phones including Axon 7. Impressions after a day's usage of an hour of web surfing, 3 hours of critical music listening over headphones and an hour of video left a very positive effect. Axon 7 is a solid product, a true flagship killer with a very polished user interface. Also great build quality and great display. Since we are talking in context to audio I will come straight to the point. Hardware wise Axon 7 comes with two dedicated audio chips made by AKM. The AK4961 is for normal duty, which means powering the internal speaker, voice calls, earpiece & microphones. Sound and loudness through internal stereo speakers is excellent just like my Lenovo Vibe X3. So from internal speaker point of view Axon 7 is the clear winner over Vivo X5Max. Now comes the most interesting part, its audio performance over headphones which audiophiles look out. For headphones Axon 7 packs another dedicated DAC, namely AK4490. With the HiFi mode in ON position I was listening to different genres of music. Headphones used were a high end RHA T20 and budget friendly Cowon EK2. From song number one, I found Axon 7 to be neutral sounding which is a big plus. Its low frequencies aka bass performance is good but it lacks the decisiveness and accurately timed punch found in X5Max. The mids are much thicker than X5Max, which translates to more warmer and more elastic sounding voice, more humane. But where it desperately fails to X5Max is in reproducing the high frequencies. It lacks the precision, the ability to remove layers of sonic glaze and provide the best possible separation of sound. I know from the core of my heart it is very hard to beat the holy trinity of ESS Sabre ES9018 + ESS Sabre ES9601 + Texas Instruments OPA1612. All these in Vivo X5Max is powered by a dedicated power supply. This phone has the accuracy and the ability to resolve details from high quality lossless audio files which only my Lenovo Vibe X3 was able to come close to. X5Max have set the bar in terms of sound quality which is so high for phones, that none of the recently released Vivo's in India can even match its audio performance. In terms of audio quality I will rank Axon 7 slightly above Vivo V3Max (which also comes with a previous generation AKM AK4375 DAC). Axon 7 & V3Max sounds more or less the same with same tonal signature as they both use DAC from the same vendor, AKM. Both are solid performers in terms of audio quality. Vivo X5Max though simply lives in a different plane and still is the BEST. Later I found our good friends over Soomal, a highly regarded and respected audio related website in China are in-line with my views. You may go through their audio reviews to get a subjective as well as an objective analysis of ZTE Axon 7.

  • ------------------------------------------------------------ ATTENTION ALL VIVO X5MAX OWNERS!!! ------------------------------------------------------------ Last week I have updated Vivo X5Max to the latest 'B' spec software version (B_2.3.3) available only from their service centers. Previously all X5Max owners were stuck with 'A' spec versions, A_1.20.26 being the latest. Request all X5Max owners to perform this update at earliest, and being a MTP update it will only be available in their service centers. This update resolves the last long standing issue X5Max owners were facing from DAY 1, the absurd partition of its 16 GB internal memory into two segments. A tiny 5.5 GB portion was allocated for system space (OS installation, apps & games) and rest 9.5 GB was dedicated as phone memory for camera pics, movies & songs. The problem was after few software downloads this tiny system space used to get full and you get reminded of very low memory space. :( However after the B_2.3.3 update, you get back the fully unified single phone memory of 16 GB!!! So now you can install as many apps and heavy games (over 1 GB each) without ever running out of phone memory. And for your songs and videos you can still use the phone memory or the discrete 128 GB memory card. Also I have observed the phone have become more liquid smooth in operation without any lags or stuttering during normal usage. Games like Asphalt 8 loads even faster so better memory management thatn previous versions. A big thumbs up to Vivo for their concerted effort!!! After update: Android Version: 4.4.4 vivo ROM: Funtouch OS_2.0 Software Version: PD1408F_EX_B_2.2.3 Kernel Version: 3.10.28 Compile Time: 30-06-2016

  • Rishiguru, I got a Canadian version of ZTE Axion 7 through a relative. The sound through the speaker is amazing. It has capability to play FLAC files which I had some of them 80's popular songs. I do not have much idea about the dedicated chipst inside but am definitely sure it would give a tough contest with my JBL J88A headphones. Apart from that the phone otherwise is a brilliant performer.

  • What is a Vivo V3Max add got to do with X5Max?

  • Latest Vivo ad by Ranvir Singh is the worst ad ever. His voice is foolish, sound is horrible & who wants such bangs to affect their ears, please make the ad mute to attract clients. I don't think u need an ad. Vivo goes by its name itself. Don't spoil your image by such horrible add.

  • NEVER. Vivo never updates their phones with newer android versions. Personally I would love Lollipop running on my Vivo X5Max provided the iMusic default music player supports high resolution lossless FLAC audio playback. Else I like to stick to the current KitKat version.

  • When will the phone be updated to Lollipop? With Lollipop, I can plug in with my external DAC. Been waiting for sometime now.

  • Do you own a Vivo X5Max? I highly doubt as you are the first person in the world who states its sound quality over headphones are not good. Its time to get your ears checked.

  • Very bad sound over headphone via sony headset...worst speacker outpot and lag is very much when playing asphalt 8 and nova3...chipset is very old but prise is still high..u can found far better phones in market in same prise

  • I have been following your posts for quite sometime and it seems you are a GURU when it comes down to audio in phones. As such I am quietly enjoying my time with my vivo x5max. Being audio inclined, this is the best smartphone you can have for quality over headphones. Built quality is second to none ans this phones thinness is awe inspiring. My cousins lenovo vibe x3 mave have better specs, but it does not posses the built quality, the camera quality and audio quality of x5max. I use shure headphones.

  • if you love music this phone is the king. My dad own x5max and i have never seen him more happy as he is a avid music lover. A phone of x5max stature should not be measured by just chipset and ram size. The designers have thought something more in x5max than just hardware. I use a vivo v3max and if you hold both phones x5max will win any day due to just looks and quality. display is out of the world in x5max. The only bad is it is very expensive.

  • Thanks! Went through the article. I think that both mobile makers and earphone makers will milk the new cash cow, relying on the novelty element and targetting the non-audiophile segment of the market. Krish

  • Vivo X5Max produces significantly better still images than V3Max both under both direct sunlight and artificial light, thanks to the use of Sony Exmor RS IMX214 photo sensor with 6 lens configuration. On the other hand V3Max produces slightly better 1080p videos. Overall X5Max is the winner in the camera department and comes with additional ultra tough sapphire lens cover for protection against scratches. I will say V3Max main & front camera is as good as Oppo F1 Plus, but X5Max is better than both. I own all three devices.

  • People buy Vivo X5Max primarily for audio reasons. Its audio quality over headphones are unparalleled by any of the smartphones you mentioned. X5Max have extraordinary built quality and you will immediately feel the difference in hand when you hold it and compare it with say Moto G4 Plus. It is still the thinnest phone in the world and oozes panache. If you are looking for best chipset, more RAM look somewhere else as Vivo is primarily designed for audio lovers.

  • X5Max why go through the dated cheapest and 2 year Old KitKat OS we have much much better options like Moto G 4 Plus Redmi Note 3 ,Le2 at cheaper price than why we opt for the X5Max.

  • Read this:

  • Thanks Rishi, Its always good to hear from you. Will do as suggested. There was one other query I had missed in the earlier post. How is the new Type C connector with regard to delivering sublime audio. Will it become the future standard. The mobile industry may prefer it on account of its pin structure being exploited for other purposes ( eg. Body sensors etc). But will it really be a big deal for the audiophile? Will FLAC files sparkle after this and become the standard? Will there be duplication of the electronics (DAC,amp etc) leading to price increases? Will look out for your future posts on this. Thanks!

  • My suggestion will be to stick with a pre-owned Vivo X5Max. I most of the time see a X5Max pop up in OLX or Quikr at prices ranging between INR 12 ~ 15K. With X5Max you not only get the best audio hardware but also one of the most intuitive music player in business which enriches your music listening experience. The "i-Music" player is simply great, easy to use and can handle high bitrate lossless FLAC audio files. None of the other internationally released Vivo phones can come close to the audio performance of X5Max. The Vivo V3Max, V3, X5Pro, V1Max and Y27L comes with the standard AKM AK4375 integrated DAC cum headphone amplifier which produces decent sound. But these phones simply cannot compete with the holy trinity of ESS Sabre ES9018 + ESS Sabre ES9601 + Texas Instruments OPA1612 found in X5Max. Another factor to count is if your audio collection consist of audio FLAC files then only X5Max & Y27L will be able to play them with i-Music player. Android Lollipop used in Vivo V3Max, V3, X5Pro & V1Max cannot play FLAC, but you can install third party apps like VLC to listen to FLAC. Lenovo Vibe X3 is a phone with great hardware but comes with patchy software updates. Vibe X3 is simply not as stable as X5Max even though it has more RAM and better processor. Audio quality is as good as X5Max, it uses ESS Sabre ES9018 + 3 X Texas Instruments OPA1612. It does not comes with any audio player other than Google Play music which does not support FLAC playback. So the audio experience leaves a lot to be desired in comparison to X5Max.

  • Hi! Rishi, Your reviews with reg to earphone mobile audio are among the best. I constantly read. Even the technicals are lucidly presented. While I long to plug into the Vivo X5 max or the Len vibe K3, budgetary constraints are an obstacle right now. I am NOT a camera buff. My phone is first and last a music player on which I enjoy my huge collection of music. After this I use it to access my various personal databases, network with friends etc. So if I am ready to compromise on camera, display and other features, can you suggest me phones with vivo like audio but at lower price (10-15k). In view of the time constraints you may have, a list of 5 models in descending order of audio quality will suffice. Other details I will gather from your other posts and reviews. As suggested by you earlier I am also looking at the pre-owned Vivos. Thanks and cheers! Krish ( [email protected])

  • Which best camera between v3 max n x5 max? Please help me

  • The LG v10 is nowhere near the x5max in sound. My dad who is now using x5max previously owned the v10. I have heard both, x5max produces out-of-the-world audio. I do not understand the technology used by my vivo v3max audio is also better than v10. But in the end x5max is just reigns supreme.

  • Between I heard audio quality of LG V10 is also fantastic and upcoming V20 may have even better.

  • I have decent experiences in Asphalt 8 and Real Racing 3 on Vivo X5Max. Someone here also pointed out the same for NOVA 3. So overall X5Max plays heavy games well.

  • How is the gamming on vivo x5 max does it run big games without any lag or there is a lag or graphics problem with it please tell

  • Hello guys can anybody tell me how is x5 max for gammming can it run mortal combat or nova 3 or asphalt 8 without lagging and chopping issues please help

  • "Lossless" is a relative term used by phone manufacturers to denote HiFi sound quality. But then what is HiFi sound? HiFi, or high fidelity means to be highly loyal to the original sound. Audio centric smartphone manufacturers like Vivo achieve HiFi by minimizing noise and distortion of sound in their flagship smartphones while raising its accuracy of response to human audible sound frequency. Sadly in the past phone makers have declined to make improvements in the audio system since people are used to bad quality 128 kbps MP3 sound. HiFi starts with high quality flawless music files often in the format of FLAC, which are close to music discs in sound quality, since they are compressed without losing music information. They are much better than even lossy 320 kbps MP3. An audio centric smartphone like Vivo X5Max contains high quality discrete audio DAC, I/V converter and audio amplifying circuit. All these chips are powered by a separate power supply devoted to audio only. X5Max packs an ESS SABRE ES9018 digital-to-analog-converter (DAC), an ESS SABRE ES9601 current-to-voltage converter (op-amp) and a Texas Instruments OPA1612 headphone amplifier to provide professional grade mobile HiFi audio solution. The audio from X5Max can cover full frequency response range from 20Hz to 20KHz, which cover all the sound frequencies sensible to human ears. The 120dB high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) will keep all the music details while minimizing the noise generated through circulation. An incredible dynamic range of 118dB means X5Max is able to faithfully produce the quietest whispers/ murmurs in music as well as the loudest sounds. And less than 0.001% total harmonic distortion (THD) will make sure the sound you hear is true to the original sound. All the above explains why you can get exceptional music experience with X5Max. Lenovo Vibe X3 shares many audio components of X5Max like the DAC & amplifier. It is able to produce similar audio performance to that of X5Max. I own both the phones and when it comes down to sound quality over headphones, I prefer X5Max over Vibe X3 by a slight margin. Both are able to create very high volume levels over ear buds and in-ear earphones. In short you will be able to achieve the path to audio nirvana with any of these smartphones. Cheers!!!

  • @RishiGuru Hi, I was comparing lenovo vibe x3 with Vivo X5Max. Lenovo claims their phone has a lossless 3.5 headphone output. Can you please tell me how X5Max's headphone output compares with Vibe X3? Is X5Max's headphone jack lossless too?

  • Please find the answers to your questions below: 1) Both Vivo X5Max and V3Max support only GREEN colored LED for app notifications. For X5Max even if the LED is multi-colored we can only use GREEN color. LED will also glow GREEN constantly while charging up on both phones. Additionally, X5Max notification LED will also constantly glow RED while recording audio. I have also found when the battery charge is below 1% in X5Max, the notification LED blinks RED. V3Max do not support RED color. Mind you notification LED works only when display is off for both phones. 2) Internationally Vivo must provide Google Play Services in all their smartphones or else no one will buy. To provide Google Services Vivo must go through Android certification process using Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS). This is made mandatory from Android Lollipop (ver 5.0) onwards. The international version of V3Max uses Android Lollipop and hence needs to pass CTS test in-order to provide you the Google services. Unfortunately, as of now CTS does not support the ultra high resolution lossless FLAC audio files. Hence neither Google Play Music app nor Vivo's own "i-Music" default music app can play FLAC files. This is unfortunate situation. Vivo X5Max on the other hand uses Android KitKat (ver 4.4.4) which at the time of release (Jan, 2015) did not required to go through CTS test to provide us Google Play services. So in a way X5Max is the best of both worlds, it gives you the power to fully exploit its audiophile grade audio hardware built in by supporting lossless audio FLAC files through its awesome "i-Music" default app. At the same time you get full access to Google services in it. 3) In short X5Max have two audio paths to its headphone jack, one geared for ultimate audio performance and the other to conserve battery. Performance come at an expense as the discrete audio DAC + IV converter drains a lot of battery power. So when you have a worthwhile source like FLAC or 320 kbps MP3 files, you switch on HiFi mode in X5Max. For something like low quality 128 kbps MP3, you turn it off to save battery power while listening. V3Max frankly cannot be segmented as an audiophile grade phone as it has a single mediocre grade AKM AK4375 DAC with in-built Class-G headphone amplifier. X5Max can reach over 120 dB SNR and distortion less than -100 dB while V3Max somehow coughs up 105 dB SNR and distortion of -97 dB. As such V3Max have only one audio path for headphones through AK4375 with HiFi enabled. Saying that V3Max will slay twice more expensive phones like Samsung Galaxy S7 or HTC 10 where audio quality is concerned. 4) Top accessory companies like Nillkin do not provide screen protectors to mid-range devices like V3Max. Ofcource they have world class tempered glass display protectors available for Vivo flagship devices like X5Max. For V3Max you can vouch for one low cost locally made protector. I got one plastic display protector for V3Max. 5) As you said in some other post comparing flagship devices like X5Max with midrange devices like V3Max is like comparing apples to oranges. X5Max cost INR 9K over V3Max. As such it is built with more premium components like sapphire glass camera lens protection. I do not know if there is any separate protection available for camera lens. 6) If you are after music at a small budget get the Cowon EK2. I believe it retails in India for INR 1.3K. This earphone is not for bass lovers OR for those who loves the popular V-groove (high bass + high treble + recessed mids type of sound) which are quite popular with electronic music. EK2 on the other hand has a flat frequency response; it produces the real true sound with just the amount of bass + mids + highs as the composer has intended!!! But it comes with big 10mm drivers for which you need smartphones that are capable to drive them like X5Max, V3Max etc. With other smartphones with no dedicated headphone amplifier the EK2 may sound anemic as those phones do not have the power to drive those 10mm drivers.

  • I have few questions regarding Vivo X5Max and v3max. rishiguru can you please help me out? 1. Do both x5max and v3max have only GREEN color notification led? I noticed when I first charged x5max after unboxing for the first few minutes the notification led was RED in color. How can I use the other colors? 2. Why can I not play flac audio files in v3max? Due to vivo audio prowess I got some high quality audio flac files from my friend. But when go to play the default player plays the song but is unable to show me the name of the song, the artist or the album. It just shows as unknown file as if it cannot read the file properly. I have tried the same audio files with my dad's x5max and it not only plays but also shows every detail like name, artist and album. 3. Why in v3max we do not have the HIFI button in the music player? In X5Max I can switch HIFI on/off as required but I cannot do the same in v3max. 4. Can anybody throw some pointer to a decent screen protector for v3max? It seems x5max comes with gorilla glass 3 so no worries there, but my v3max has just mineral glass which is prone to scratches. 5. X5max uses expensive sapphire glass as main camera lens protection. It is as tough as diamond and near impossible to scratch. But v3max comes with only mineral glass, so I am worries if the lens cover gets scratched. My friend once got the lens cover of his mobile scratched and then every photo he took came out blurry as the lens inside could not properly take the photo 6. The headphones bundled with x5max are awesome while that of v3max is cheap. Where can I buy x5max’s headphones and if not can anybody suggest me a good quality inear headphone within thousand rupees or so?

  • Call it a misfortune or sheer coincidence, my dad's phone went kaput two days ago. However due to his business needs which requires constant communication we went to buy a smartphone yesterday and got ourselves a vivo x5max. As always preparing & setting my dad's phone is my job........ so here comes my inital impressions on x5max.... 1. Built quality is better than my vivo v3max. 2. Feels more premuium in the hand like a flagship device should. 3. X5max display is the best display I have seen till date 4. Music through headphones sound more clear like distilled water and volumes levels are even louder than my v3max. X5max have much better sound than v3max, the best that I have ever heard. 5. You said x5max speaker loudness is not as good as v3max........ but I found it be as loud. Ringtones can be clearly heard. 6. Charging takes a lot of time. The battery of x5max was completely depleted when uncased so I used my v3max charger and it took two and a half hours to charge 100%. My v3max will charge completely in just one hour and 45 mins....... 7. Battery backup is better than expected..... in such a slim phone.... I expect my dad can easily last a day with it without charging..... 8. Camera performance is superb.... just no words.... much much better than v3max.... especially under low light conditions... 9. Selfie camera is as good as v3 max 10. You feel no difference while using or operating both the phones. Funtouch OS of vivo looks and feels the same in both phones..... and both provides fluid experiences. I found no software lags in x5max... 11. My dad will never play games... still I installed Nova 3 which is a super heavy game. Guess what the game played super smooth on x5max ... with full display settings. This was not expected but x5max proved me that it can handle high definition heavy games quite well. 12. I miss the fingerprint scanner on x5max. However for my dad it is not a cause of concern. 13. What he is concerned about is call quality... and I affirm it is better than v3max on this aspect. Sound through earpiece is more loud and clear. 14. X5max has an extra noise cancellation microphone beside the back camera so the person on the other side of the call hears more clearly. V3max does not have this feature.... 15. Both phones support OTG. 16. 4G reception is slightly better in x5max over v3max. 17. The camera LED is better in x5max. More bright... more whiteish.... 18. No FM radio is a bummer in X5max. But flagships dont have fm now... I truly love this x5max flagship from vivo. So beautiful ...so slim... it was a complete worthy buy. I will stick to my V3max for its more powerfull cpu for games and also more ram...... and also because dad likes the look, better reception quality, thinness and the quality of the x5max... thanks rishiguru for pointing out to such a great device.

  • X5Max was Vivo's most expensive handset ever released in India at INR 33K. Their is a reason why it is most expensive, as it reflects one of their best craftsmanship and engineering excellence. It also used some the best and most expensive hardware components, so the price remained quite high. We can now find a X5Max at INR 20K in online stores like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal. It is a killer deal now and if can grab one, you will be receiving straight 40% discount on the MRP of this device.

  • Wow it seems you are truly the Guru of X5Max. It took me some time to go through all your post, but it was worth reading. I recently got myself a v3max, but I am contemplating now as now we can get this last year vivo flagship at the same price band of my v3max.

  • When I first laid hands on my Vivo X5Max, I could feel this phone to be different. It not only looks and feels premium but the engineering and its execution is also top notch. And it had a goal to achieve, to be the thinnest phone in the world. Much thought have gone into designing this product. As usual being technically inclined I collected a lot of hardware information regarding this phone which was quite revealing. Just thought to share the same. Vivo X5Max uses the following ICs (chips) in its Printed Circuit Board (PCB): 1) Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939): The Snapdragon 615 is the first octa-core 64-bit processor from Qualcomm, manufactured using 28 nm process. The CPU is divided into two clusters: a Quad-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 performance cluster and another quad-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 backup cluster. The performance cluster always remains in ON position and only on high multi-threaded computational demand the additional backup cluster is switched ON. For X5Max, Vivo have detuned the performance cluster to 1.5 GHz to save battery and also reduce heat generated on full CPU load. The backup cluster remains untouched at 1 GHz operating frequency. I believe in X5Max a slight detuning was necessary considering the sheer thinness of this device which will in no way help in heat dissipation and in containing a bigger battery. The inbuilt GPU of Snap 615 is Adreno 405 which is a solid workhorse for 1080p games. Any higher resolution and you are stretching its limits. 2) SK Hynix Integrated Memory (H9TQ18ABJTMC): A single memory chip from Hynix containing both RAM and eMMC Storage, thus saving a lot of space on the already cramped PCBs of smartphones. This memory chip offers a 2 GB LP-DDR3 RAM running at 800 Mhz frequency. Additionally it contains a 16 GB eMMC 4.5 storage space (Phone memory) with read speeds of up to 140 MB/s and write speeds of up to 60 MB/s. 3) Qualcomm Atheros WCN3660: An integrated connectivity chip which offers dual band WiFi at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation. Bluetooth 3.0 for audio streaming and device connectivity as well as Bluetooth 4.0. This chip gives X5Max the capability to be used as Personal Hotspot and also supports FM. Unfortunately FM is disabled in X5Max. 4) Qualcomm WTR1605L: It is the transceiver chip in X5Max. As a modem it supports multiple bands from 2G / 3G / 4G. The "L" in WTR1605L denotes support for LTE. It also supports GPS. 5) RFMD RF7459A: A radio frequency power amplifier for 3G / 4G bands. Helps X5Max to catch signals even when the signal towers are far away. Helps to maintain decent signal strength. 6) Qualcomm PM8916: The power management chip of X5Max. This chip is in charge of proper battery power management be it charging or discharging. Additionally it also contains the Audio Codec (ADCs and DACs) for headphone audio playback, earpiece, microphones and speaker amplifiers. X5Max uses these audio codecs from PM8916 for audio playback when HiFi mode is OFF to save battery power. 7) NXP TFA9890A: Vivo X5Max uses this high quality discrete Class-D Audio Amplifier from NXP for its internal mono speaker. It provides way superior performance in both clarity and loudness than the in-built solution of PM8916. 8) ESS Sabre ES9018-K2M: This is an ultra high quality discrete stereo DAC used in X5Max. When HiFi mode is switched ON, this ES9018 is used for superlative digital-to-analog conversion and preserve high sound quality from Snap 615. When HiFi mode in switched OFF, the audio codec pack of PM8916 is used instead from Snap 615 to conserve battery. 9) ESS Sabre ES9601: An audio operational amplifier used for current-to-voltage conversion. High end DACs like ES9018 produces current while headphones operates on voltage, hence current to voltage conversion is performed with ES9601. This step is critical for audio quality and ES9018 + ES9601 does an astounding job to produce 122 dB of SNR. This amount of audio quality was previously unheard of in smartphones. 10) Texas Instuments OPA1612: A very high quality discrete headphone amplifier used with ES9018 + ES9601. Gives X5Max the audio lifeblood and power to drive any audiophile grade in-ear headphones. Delivers a richer and fuller audio experience over headphones. So the audio chains of X5Max are as below: HiFi Mode OFF: Snapdragon 615 -> PM8916 -> OPA1612 -> Headphone Out HiFi Mode ON: Snapdragon 615 -> ES9018 -> ES9601 -> OPA1612 -> Headphone Out 11) Power supply to discrete audio chips: All the best audio DACs and headphone amplifiers will not produce great sound until they are properly fed. Thus the importance of quality power supply becomes very important in audiophile centric smartphones like X5Max. As such X5Max sports a dedicated secondary power supply to provide pristine and clear power from the battery without any ripples or jitters to the audio chips. A discrete DC-DC Charge Pump along with two low dropout (LDO) linear regulators are used to provide ample power to ES9018, ES9601 and OPA1612 to operate at their full potential and provide amazing sound quality and loudness. Some other notable hardware components used in X5max: 1) Samsung Super AMOLED Display, 5.5 inches supporting 1080p resolution. The entire display unit of X5max is at 1.36 mm thick, the slimmest screen in the world. 2) The main rear camera uses high quality Sony Exmor RS IMX214 sensor. It is a stacked CMOS image sensor of 13 MP with pixel size of 1.12 um. IMX214 supports Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) and HDR mode. In X5Max, Vivo uses six lens (6P) configurations, one more than the standard 5P for better optical images. Focal length is a wide aperture F 2.0. Finally X5Max uses an additional sapphire protection lens cover which protects against scratches. 3) The international version of X5Max comes with a 2300 mAh Lithium Polymer battery from ATL. 4) X5Max have the following in-built sensors: Gesture sensor, Light sensor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Electronic compass, Gyroscope Hope this helps!!!

  • Vivo X5Max like every other smartphone does tends to heat up while playing very heavy games for extended periods of time. Like I once played Asphalt 8 for 45 mins or so and it got really hot, but it never reaches unbearable levels. It is to note X5Max comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset which is notorious for heating. But hats-off to Vivo in fine tuning this chipset for the thinnest smartphone in the world, X5Max. The international version of X5Max is just 5.1mm thick, so optimal heat dissipation is always going to be a concern for such a thin device. It is for these reasons I believe Vivo under clocked the Snapdragon 615 where the main cluster of four Cortex-A53 cores runs at a lower 1.5 GHz rather than the usual 1.7 GHz. So less heat is generated even in the expense of some top performance. The second cluster of four Cortex-A53 cores runs at usual specified 1.0 GHz frequency. The GPU here is Adreno 405 which does a good job in games. I have seen X5Max dismantling videos on YouTube, and let me tell you the motherboard inside are meticulously built with quality components & construction. The Snapdragon 615 resides very near the volume rocker and power button area of X5Max and hence this is the region where heat is generated the most. But Vivo have gone to great lengths to perform uniform heat dissipation on X5Max by first applying thermal paste over the Snapdragon 615 chip and then additionally use graphite sheets on the inside of its metal back cover to uniformly dissipate the heat. The all metal build of the phone also aids in excellent heat dissipation from the Snap 615, as the entire metal chassis and back cover absorbs heat from the CPU keeping it cool. Such good thermal management on X5Max pays huge dividends as the Snapdragon 615 can work under its normal working temperatures with all cores enabled and does not need to throttle or shut down some of its cores to curb heat. If a chipset starts to throttle due to extreme heat there will be severe performance drops. As an example of ill managed heat management look no further than the recent Motorola Moto G4 Plus where the Snapdragon 617 (same as Snapdragon 615) keeps throttling under extreme heat generated at 50 degrees after just 10 mins of video recording and then shuts down six of its cores to save itself. So you get a G4 Plus which becomes a dual core Snapdragon 617 under heavy use. Coming to software optimization on X5Max, the entire Funtouch OS 2.0 is build to conserve energy. Starting from black background themes to save display consumption, it has many nifty ways designed to it to save battery. Let's be frank, we do need all the computing power from all the eight CPU cores and GPU of Snapdragon 615 under normal usage. So Vivo have this default app called "i Manager" which manages the phone as a whole. Mind you X5Max comes with a 1080p display, so it stresses the Snapdragon 615 a lot when playing very heavy games like Asphalt 8 with high display quality settings enabled in the game. I play like this so before loading the game I go to: i Manager -> Select "Power Manager" -> Select "CPU Mode" -> Select "Top speed mode" By enabling this mode I get full power of Snapdragon 615 under my disposal. And then Asphalt 8 even under 1080p resolution with high display quality settings enabled runs butter smooth with no frame drops!!! It is to note prior I had some issues with dropped frames in games with X5Max, but with latest OTA software updates (latest being PD1408F_EX_A_1.20.26 as of today) all the frame drop issues are resolved. So to me X5Max can now play all the heavy games you can through at it with high display quality settings enabled. It does not get overly heated even under prolonged gaming. Hope it helps!!!

  • Vivo is a Chinese smartphone company, just like Oppo and OnePlus. All these three brands have one thing in common; they all belong to the same parent company BBK Electronics of China. They are just a few years old and share some similar traits like exemplary built quality while providing awesome in-hand feel. Currently BBK follows different marketing strategies for their brands. While OnePlus is only available online and is more reasonably priced, Oppo & Vivo is projected offline through retail chains. BBK wants to market their Vivo & Oppo as premium brands so the quoted price is always very high. Currently they are not geographically available in all parts of the world. Luckily in India we have presence from all these three brands. From a technical standpoint BBK have made clear differentiation between all its brands, Vivo is targeted to audio aficionados like me while Oppo is for those who give camera performance the top priority. OnePlus on the other hand makes very well balanced handsets at a reasonable price, but they are jack of all trades but master of none. I have used quite a few Vivo phones. I have experiences with their flagships like X5Max, X5Pro, XShot & X3S. I have used their midrange devices like V3Max, V1Max & V1. I also have one of their budget phones Y27L. The reason to buy so many of their Vivo handsets is they produce very good to extra-ordinary sound quality over headphones depending on which model. I also own an F1 Plus which is Oppo's current flagship in India. Previously I used to have an OnePlus 2. To me the most defining and technologically innovative brand among these three is Vivo and also it is BBKs top brand. Vivo flagships like X5Max will provide unheard sound quality over headphones (for smartphones that is), exemplary build quality, display quality, and camera quality equivalent to a OnePlus device. Lastly I will say Vivo, Oppo & OnePlus creates phones of international standards and can readily go head to head with Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, and others. Take the example of Vivo Xplay5 Elite and Samsung S7 Edge.

  • Yeah, I also had same confusion. It is nowhere mentioned in their official website about Corning Gorilla Glass display protection on Vivo X5Max. At last I went to the Vivo official forums to inquire this and guess what X5Max does actually comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display protection!!! This was a very satisfying response from the forum moderators as I use the smartphone day in day out. And I can personally confirm there are no scratches on my X5Max display after months of heavy duty use. :)

  • The network capabilities of my Vivo X5Max (International version and India bound): 2G capabilities: GSM 850; GSM 900; GSM 1800; GSM 1900 3G capabilities : UMTS 2100 (Band 1); UMTS 850 (Band 5); UMTS 900 (Band 8) 4G capabilities : FDD-LTE 1800 (Band 3); TDD-LTE 2300 (Band 40) In our country it supports all available 2G & 3G network bands. For 4G it supports the most popular FDD-LTE 1800 followed by TDD-LTE 2300. Only FDD-LTE 850 is not supported but is hardly used by any network provider in my region or even India as a whole. Network reception is fantastic with this phone. This smartphone sports a hybrid dual SIM slot, so you can replace the second sim with a 128 GB microSD card but you cannot use both SIMs with memory card. X5Max have the best display quality compared to all other Vivo flagship X-series i have experienced. Its 5.5 inch 1080p Samsung Super AMOLED display is unparalleled by X5Pro, XShot or even X3S. Even the recently released Vivo V3Max with IPS display is nowhere close.

  • Well the global version of Vivo X5Max have 16GB internal memory. Additionally it sports a hybrid dual SIM slot, so you can replace the second sim with a 128 GB microSD card. Total memory is 16 + 128 =144 GB out of which around 140 GB will be variable to the user. Over 100 gigs of memory lets me store hi-res audio FLAC files for listening. This smartphone is an audio nirvana, the best I have ever heard. Regarding the thickness the global version is thicker at 5.1mm and sports a bigger battery at 2300 mAh.

  • Which version of Vivo X5Max are you using? The Chinese version is just 4.8 mm thick and was primarily made to compete for the slimmest smartphone of the world award. It eventually own this award over Oppo R5 with 4.9 mm thickness. Both these models comes with a 2000 mAh battery. Mind you both Oppo & Vivo are owned by the same company, BBK Electronics of China. It is true that for a 1080p screen with octa core Snapdragon 615 processor 2000 mAh is just not enough. So the global version of X5Max had a more sane approach with increased battery capacity to 2300 mAh thus growing thicker by 0.3 mm to 5.1 mm. And Vivo went to great lengths to optimize their Funtouch OS for efficiency gains and using a new black background theme over the usual white one to limit battery drainage from display. Thus GSMArena after review gives the global X5Max an endurance rating of 71 hours where as the R5 could just cough up measly 38 hours. It speaks volumes of how well optimized the software part of the X5Max is in comparison to R5. The global version of X5Max can very well last for a normal day of usage. But you have to be a bit calculative on how many of its "Smart Features" you want to use and disable the rest. These additional "Smart Features" of Funtouch OS drains a lot of battery even if the smartphone is not used. Some tips: 1) I use "Smart Awake" feature only to play & change music. So I disabled it for Facebook, Whatsapp, dialer, browser, email, display unlock & take a photo actions. 2) Disable all "Air Operations" if you do not require it. Enabling this smart operations causes the front camera to be always stay "ON" to track our gestures like waving our hand for Air Unlock. This operations drains a lot of battery power. 3) Disable as many "Smart Call" operations as you can. For me it is completely disabled. 4) Disable as many "Smart Light" operations as you can. For me only the "Double click to light" operation is enabled. Mind you these are additional operations provided by Vivo for added convenience and you can very well do without it. As such my daily driver X5Max now very well lasts for a full day of normal usage. Hope this helps. :)

  • Correction --------------- The Global/ International version of Vivo X5Max that GSMArena reviewed here is of 5.1mm thickness as it comes with a bigger 2300 mAh battery. The Chinese version was of 4.75 mm thickness and had a smaller 2000 mAh battery.

  • I just got my vivo x5max a few months ago.. I do agree it has the wow factor.. thins and looks expansive. But the only downside of it is that the battery capacity is very low and for me I have to recharge it a few times a day....

  • The thinnest phone on the market at 4.75 millimeter.

  • Yeah the X5Max is special, the best Vivo I have seen till date.

  • You are right... i have both v3max and x5max ... and x5max is just special. v3max may have the new powerful processor, more ram, better battery backup and all.. but in hand feel of this phone is second to none... it has this wow factor.. plus thin factor... which none of my phones.. incuding iphones can have in thousand years. x5max sounds awesome over earphones, the best i have heard and the display and built quality even surpasses iphones. Also the processor and ram is enough for my everyday duty and you have a very smooth fluid experience with the user interface. Even with such a thin phone the battery last a day which is unbelievable. Great flagship phone and i love this phone and the good thing is now we can have this flagship at same price of v3max.

  • Strange, as I have used quite a few of their smartphones and the performance have been pretty solid to me. That said I have mainly used their X-Series flagships devices like X5Max, X5Pro, XShot, X3S and two of their mid-range offerings V1 & V1Max. Ofcource none of their phones are for power users and gamers, but they do perform day to day tasks pretty smoothly and reliably. You buy a Vivo for few reasons, number one in them is audio quality over headphones. Next comes screen quality, built quality and looks. They will never be chart blazers in performance aspect except for audio quality. They are also quite expensive. My pick and daily driver have always been the X5Max, the best of all their flagships launched internationally.

  • I purchased vivo 2 months ago based on looks and assurance of my dealer I am deeply disappointed with the performance of my phone its very very slow and unfortunately not getting proper service have decided to through that phone and go back to Samsung think 10 times before you buy such products

  • If you are an audio fanatic gun for Vivo X5Max, else there are much better options available in the market right now. I have used all Vivo flagship X-Series phones available in Indian market, and X5Max repeatedly came out to be the best. It was also the most expensive of all their flagships at US $500. Simply put it has one of the best audio quality over headphones, the best I have heard from any smartphone to date. It is also very loud over headphones which is a very good indication of its audio prowess. Other than audio there is nothing much to lookup in this phone, but it has exemplary built quality and an awesome 5.5 inch 1080p Samsung Super AMOLED display. And yeah I forgot to mention this, it is one of the thinnest phone in the world.

  • Are these phones any good.

  • To understand which one has better sound quality over headphones and why, at first you need to understand the different types of DAC packages that comes with audio-centric smartphones: 1) Integrated DAC Chip (DAC + Headphone amplifier): This type of DAC chips have lower audio performance parameters compared to other type of discrete DACs mentioned below. But these are very cost effective solutions as a medium quality op-amp comes integrated with the DAC to act as an in-built headphone amplifier. The low cost AKM AK4375 audio chip is one such example, liberally used in Vivo Y27L, Vivo V1Max, Vivo V3 & Vivo V3Max. AK4375 contains an inbuilt stereo voltage output DAC plus a stereo Class-G headphone amplifier (an operational amplifier to amplify the volume output) all in a single integrated chip. 2) Voltage Output DAC: These are discrete stereo DACs offering far better audio quality than integrated solutions like AKM AK4375. Hence they are expensive. An example will be the renowned Cirrus Logic CS4398 discrete stereo DAC which produces analog voltage audio signals required to drive headphones from digital audio data of smartphone CPU. We can actually feed the DAC's output directly to headphones in order to listen music but the audio signal will be very feeble. Hence discrete DACs require help from a discrete stereo headphone amplifier to pump up the volume. Vivo X5Pro uses the CS4398 DAC with a discrete Maxim MAX97220 operational amplifier (stereo headphone amplifier to amplify the voltage signal from the DAC output to the 3.5mm headphone out). Hence the sound over headphones is as loud as -3.3dB with the punch to drive audiophile grade headphones. In comparison the Apple iPhone 6s maxes out at just -7.0dB while the Google Nexus 6P will cough up a meager -15.5dB. Vivo labels this kind of audio architecture used in X5Pro as HiFi 1.0, where a discrete DAC is followed by a discrete operational amplifier to the 3.5mm headphone out jack. 3) Current Output DAC: The most expensive option with the highest audio performance. Here the DAC does not produce analog voltage(V) audio signals required to drive headphones from digital audio stream of CPU but instead produces current(I) as output. ESS as the best DAC manufacturer in the world produces such expensive & performance oriented DAC in the name of SES SABRE ES9018 for smartphones. But with performance comes cost & complications in hardware design as their comes an additional step in the audio path where the current output from this DAC needs to be converted to voltage signals on which headphones operate. This conversion is ultra critical for the final sound signature and in producing the desired tonality. ESS never wanted any other manufacturer to handle such a critical performance stage for their DAC and hence created the ESS SABRE ES9601 operational amplifier (on Vivo's insistence) to be exclusively mated with their DAC to perform this I/V conversion. Mind you ES9601 op-amp is exclusive to Vivo and no other manufacturer can claim it. Vivo used this pair for the first time in their X5Max handset. I believe it is this exclusive pair which gives X5Max a slight performance edge in audio quality to the rest of the smartphones like Lenovo Vibe X3 which uses the same ESS DAC. Not to be content, Vivo additionally roped in another great name Texas Instruments to make the ominious OPA1612 operational amplifier which acted as a discrete headphone amplifer in X5Max, further amplifing the voltage signals from the ES9018 op-amp to the 3.5mm headphone out. The headphone volumes are so high (-1.4dB) and clear you can drive any audiophile in-ear headphones to the maximum with X5Max. Vivo calls this kind of audio architecture as used in X5Max as HiFi 2.0, where a discrete DAC is followed by two discrete operational amplifiers to the 3.5mm headphone out jack. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My two cents (After extensive use of both Vivo X5Max & Lenovo Vibe X3 over multiple headphones): A) If you are seeking to use a smartphone as a high resolution audio player to attain highest audio quality over headphones go for Vivo X5Max. To my knowledge X5Max is the most audiophile centric smartphone Vivo have ever created and then released globally. I own one and call it their masterpiece. Only the to-be-released Vivo XPlay5 Elite with HiFi 3.0 architecture have the potential to dethrone it, but it may not be released globally. The X5Max have the best timbre and tonal quality while the separation of instruments is second to none. As the pioneer of HiFi smartphones Vivo owns a special relationship with ESS, the best DAC manufacturer in the world. It is they who convinced ESS to make a DAC chip exclusively for their smartphones. Then ESS created the sublime SABRE ES9018 DAC only to be used in Vivo flagship smartphones. In 2014, no other smartphone manufacturer were interested to put such an expensive DAC in their units. The main objective of HiFi 2.0 architecture in X5Max was to attain a measured 120dB SNR, 118dB dynamic range and distortion less than -100dB. This indicates they have actually surpassed most desktop and high resolution portable audio players in the market with X5Max. B) If you want to use a smartphone as a smartphone like playing games, multimedia stuff, watching movies in VR headset, etc along with a supreme sound quality that misses the X5Max by a whisker, get a Lenovo Vibe X3. I will be perfectly fine with Vibe X3 which uses the same high-end ESS SABRE ES9018 DAC of Vivo X5Max. But Lenovo like other manufacturers do not have access to Vivo exclusive ESS SABRE ES9601 op-amp for critical I/V conversion. So what Lenovo (or rather Motorola) did was clever, they used the best op-amp available in the market, the same Texas Instruments OPA1612 (used in X5Max as headphone amplifier) to perform the current-to-voltage(I/V) conversion. But to improve performance and keep it close to ES9601 op-amp, they used a OPA1612 per channel (differential configuration) rather than justy one for both channels (single-ended configuration). Hence two OPA1612 are required for the stereo I/V conversion rather than just one. Further Vibe X3 uses the third OPA1612 just as a headphone amplifer just like X5Max. Lenovo was definitely inspired by Vivo's HiFi 2.0 architecture in X5Max and Vibe X3 is the result. It uses the same ESS SABRE ES9018 DAC and three OPA1612 op-amps in its audio path. Vibe X3 attained a measured 120dB SNR, -103dB distortion (fractionally less than X5Max's -100dB) and an high output voltage on +0.9518 volts over headphone jacks. These are signs of a true HiFi oriented smartphone. Apart from similar audio performance over headphones, Vibe X3 will obliterate X5Max with stereo in-built speaker performance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subjectively speaking both are equally loud on same headphones, maybe Vibe X3 a fractionally louder. I believe X5Max having access to the exclusive ESS SABRE ES9601 op-amp for ESS SABRE ES9018 DAC have a slight edge. But then you are splitting hairs as both uses the same DAC in different hardware architectures having their own strengths and weaknesses. X5Max having slightly better separation, transients, plucked strings of guitars are better illustrated and high frequency transparency is second to none. The Vibe X3 on the other hand have a slightly more authoritative bass, mids are more thick and mellow and male voices are slightly better put than X5Max. Female voices sound slightly better in X5Max. I will say Vibe X3's sound signature is somewhat in between the mellow-ish X5Pro & sharp-ish X5Max. It is very hard to choose between the two and will ultimately boil down to personal preferences. Having said that Vivo & Lenovo have both done a stellar job in X5Max & Vibe X3 respectively and they are currently second to none in audio department. If you love complete separation of instruments and the openness in sound signature go for X5Max else if vocals is your preference go for Vibe X3. Apart from audio, the X5Max have more up-market feel with slightly better built quality over Vibe X3. The 5.5 inch 1080p Super AMOLED display of X5Max is superior to Vibe X3 in terms of both color reproduction and vibrancy. Battery backup just makes up for a day in X5Max as it is the thinnest phone in the world with just 2300 mAh juice. Both the smartphones have excellent call quality, just like Motorola's CrystalTalk. Hope this helps!!!

  • I am a lot interested in this phone for its hifi audio quality over headphones. I also have come across another handset by the name lenovo vibe x3. Have you compared the sound between the two? Which one is the better of the two for quality sound over headphones? Does x5max support FLAC audio playback and how convinent is its default music player? Also how is the network call quality of x5max? Finally i want to state i am not a power user, I want to use the phone for mainly calls and also use it as a portable audio player. Please help me as both phones cost more or less the same and i cannot decide which one to buy.

  • where can i buy VIVO x5 here in philippines? hlp... pls......

  • I thought to share a few points about my X5Max, V1 and Vivo in general: Pros: 1) Excellent built quality. Be it X5Max or V1, from the moment you hold X5Max or V1 in your hand you feel the premium built quality and precision engineering. The handsets radiate as if they were curved from a single block of magnesium/ aluminum and are built to last. But this premium quality comes at a premium price just like an Apple iPhone. So Vivo is not like LeTv/ LeEco, providing premium quality at an insanely low price. 2) Vivo's own Funtouch overlay over Android. As the name implies this custom operating system overlay is "fun to touch" and comes with many useful gesture controls which are truly helpful at times. But don't expect blazingly fast performance and range topping benchmark scores against this OS. Even though Funtouch OS overlay is a shameless copy of Apple's own iOS found in iPhones, coping iPhone have made Vivo to offer us a very useful and intuitive OS and truly engaging for day to day activity. I love this OS. 3) If you are a music lover and cherish high sound quality over headphones, then Vivo flagship models like X5Max or X5Pro are for you. Two years back we had not too many options, Meizu was not available in India and X5max was the best and only choice for music buffs like me. Fortunately now we have many choices like Lenevo Vibe X3 which has the premium built quality like X5Max coupled with high quality sound and also comes way cheaper at INR 20K while X5max retailed at INR 33K. Meizu MX5 Pro and Xiaomi Mi Note are also other options you can look out for. Cons: 1) Zero Android OS updates. Let me give you an example. I gifted my wife's a Motorola Moto G (2nd Gen) in 2014 which came preinstalled with Android 4.4.4 (KitKat). The Moto G retailed online at INR 11K in Flipkart. In the same year I got myself a Vivo X5Max at INR 33K (3x the price of Moto G) from a local offline Vivo dealer. This also came with Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) with their own Funtouch 2.0 overlay. Standing as of today the Moto G was subsequently updated via OTA by Motorola to Android 5.0.1 (Lolipop) -> Android 5.1.0 (Lolipop) -> Android 6.0.0 (Marshmallow). Unfortunately the X5Max being a flagship device and initially costing 3x the price of a budget Moto G is still stuck to the same version it came pre-installed with, Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) . This is the biggest disappointed I have against Vivo, and after waiting for over a year I have understood they never do updates. The Android version in which your Vivo handset will come is the version it will remain for the rest of its life be it even a flagship device like X5Max. I have lost a lot of respect against the company in this aspect only. 2) Vivo handsets are not meant for gaming. Poor optimization of the Android with its Funtouch OS means it always remains in the bottom of the score chart in benchmarks like AnTuTu when compared with other handsets with same chipsets from rival companies. You will find more of this is GsmArena reviews itself like that of X5Max or X5Pro. You can imagine the level of stuttering and frame loss when I started to play Asphalt 8 on my flagship X5Max which comes with 64-bit Snapdragon 615 processor and 32-bit Android 4.4.4 with a poorly optimized Funtouch OS. The same game blazes in my wife's new Moto X Play with same chipset and 2GB RAM. With V1 my advice will be to stick to very low end games like Subway Surfers. 3) Always buy Vivo phones with 2GB RAM at minimum. As I said before and also mentioned by GSMArena reviews many a times, this custom Funtouch OS is very poorly optimized so require much more resources to perform optimally. To give you an example, my wife's old Moto G came with a 32-bit Snapdragon 400 with 1GB RAM and at that moment was updated to Android 5.0.1. My Vivo V1 on the other hand had 64-bit Snapdragon 410 with 2GB RAM and also comes with Android 5.0.1 having Funtouch 2.1 overlay. So V1 had much superior processor with twice the RAM of Moto G. But when I ran AnTuTu benchmarks in both handsets all hell break loose and Moto G was just a notch below V1 in total score, and most absurdly had higher scores in RAM utilization and optimization while V1 with two times the RAM of Moto G was lagging much behind it. You get the picture. This is the reason why the Vivo Y27L has so many complains which uses the same CPU of V1 but with 1GB RAM only. 4) Absurd sky high offline price when compared to online sales of its competitor models through online sales channels like Flipkart or Amazon. Let us take the example of the maximum retail price of INR 18K of Vivo V1. Comparing the absurdly high priced V1 with LeTv Le 1s (INR 11K) or Lenovo K4 Note (INR 12K) is simply injustice; they will simply blow the V1 out of the water and then stampede it in every category be it screen size or performance category bar none even being INR 6 to 7K cheaper. Same goes for every other model of Vivo. 5) If you really love to use a Vivo handset better gun for second's sale in Quikr or Olx. You will find a ton of Vivo users trying to sale their Vivo phones with barely two to three months of use, at almost half the price. I got one such two months old V1 in brand new condition at INR 7K (60% discount on INR 18K MRP). At 7K the Vivo V1 is a complete VFM and a great device worthy to buy. Enjoy!!!

  • Here is my take on Vivo after using their X5Max & V1 smartphones: 1) You should only buy a vivo if you are a music aficionado. You love high quality music that comes is huge uncompressed FLAC files & compressed 320 kbps MP3. Then also you should better stay away from V1 as it does not support FLAC files. Better buy the best music phone in the world X5Max which supports all audio file formats known to man. 2) I can find in many posts people complain about the absurdly high price of Vivo handsets over their other Chinese competitors in India. But there is a marketing logic behind it. You see in order to sustain and survive in the cut throat competition in mobile market, as a company you can market your products in two ways, online or offline. Either you gun for maximum market share on the very entry by delivering a quality product to the end customer at minimum profit margin and taking help from a reputed and established online sales channel like Flipkart or Amazon. Here there are no middle man like distributors and dealers to compound their profits and increase the final selling price. The truth is with the online retail boom in India we are now habituated in receiving smartphones as a direct sale from the company at absurdly low price. Leneovo, Xiaomi & Letv to name a few follow this direct sales path and are successful. The other way is not to give too much importance to online business and better focus on offline business by creating an offline sales channel infrastructure which initially costs a lot on money to the manufacturers. Frankly in India with only a minority of the population having access to the internet, the offline business through distributors and dealers offer a much higher potential of market share on a long run than online. Samsung, LG, HTC to name a few follow this path and so does Vivo. Vivo does offer their mobile phones at a very competitive price to their distributors rather than us, so compounding the profit margin made by distributors and dealers we end up with Vivo phones at almost twice the price of an online purchase. Take the example of much superior Lenovo K4 Note selling online at almost half the price of Vivo V1Max which is selling offline. We know the performance difference between these two models and we will always curse Vivo and always go for Lenovo or a LeTv. But what about those people who have no access to internet? They will end up buying a vivo. Also because the high profit margin provided by vivo to their dealers, they will take extra effort to convince and sell vivo products to the offline end customers. In short run, you will find Letv to have over 2 lakh registrations of their Le 1s model on the initial two days only over flipkart, while vivo have only sold slightly over 3 lakh phones in India in their first seven months with all models combined. But 5 years down the line just like Samsung or LG, they will be more well known than Letv India ans sell more phones just like Samsung & LG. So as a company it is about either attaining short term success or a long term success. Mind you as a manufacturer you can be successful in both ways. I as an end customers and in having access to internet, will better avoid vivo phones and gun for other options from Lenovo or LeTv if music is not my priority. Saying that an LeTv Le1s will have equal sound quality of a V1Max.

  • Vivo X5 Max setting, gallery and imusic is black....can change to white?? because i dont like black ;-(

  • It runs down easily couldn't even use it for up to 12 hours

  • Is the batterry drain so fast??

  • Battery performance is very poor.

  • You can not use both together.

  • The only best thing in this phone... the best of Vivo's traditions, the world's thinnest, 4.75mm phone, is also equipped with the company's usual high quality audio experience, Hi-fi 2.0, ensured this time by a Yamaha YSS-205X chip for the karaoke mode, SABRE ES9601 DAC and TI’s OPA1612 amplifier kit. As Vivo itself puts it, the phone "measures 120dB SNR, 118dB dynamic range, and distortion of less than -100dB".

  • Why my Vivo X unable to connect to PC using their USB? supposed it appear automatically..

  • Can I use both sim and sd card

  • Try holding that small icon for approx. 3 sec and if it didn't work than flip it over and again hold it than u will see a plus sign at the left bottom corner of the phone and then you can change the nickname and that pic as wel.

  • How do you change the icon and nickname? I tried dragging the icon down but it is only the shortcut to music

  • It has two sim card slots. One of them can also be used as micro SD card slot. So, if you put a micro SD card, then you can put only one SIM.

  • Can i use both SD and Sim in slor 2

  • good phone but the truth is no after sales service no android update nothing. they will sale this good phone and then you will lack for updates 6 months still running on android kitkat. They are not going to give android update i have bought for 32000 and next few days it went down to 24000 where is product loyalty huh. But all good if they provide updates too. • Babu, the Lava Iris X8 is not good. The Vivo X5Max outperforms the Lava Iris X8 by far. I'd rather spend 3 times the price on a phone which won't explode when I place it next to my face.

  • X5max

  • Sachii.....this phone Is like apple...u r also apple like

  • This phone is also available in Philippines? I haven't seen it in any phone market.... I want to buy it asap~

  • nice phone but i want new version lollipop version software

  • I always prefer only Mobiles with Removable batteries. I want to buy a smart mobile but found most of all are with NON removable batteries. I won't like them. I request Mobile companies to make ONE model with TWO types of batteries detachable and Non removable.

  • I wanna buy one, i am in Denmark. How can i get one?

  • Please tell me a7& x5max which is best..?

  • Do you have full black vivo x5max? If you have I will buy.

  • how to light the home buttons... 3 at the bottom.

  • Have been using the X5 Max for a month now. Main reason buying it is due to the good DAC chip and built in amplifier. Great for those who use high ohm headphones and/or connect the phone to a hi-fi system. I listen to FLAC files and store it on a 128GB memory card. Other than it's audio quality, other functions are average. I use Samsung Note 3 for everyday phone use, X5 Max only for music.

  • Nice job vivo. Soo thickness & also sd card slot. It really 4G?????

  • this is dual 3g & 4g supported

  • Watz d talk time of vivo x max?

  • Vivo is a major telecommunication manufacturer of South Africa. And the largest one in Brazil. Founded in 1993, located in Sau Paulo, Brazil. The company has a strong base. Just like Samsung and Nokia is famous in India here, Vivo is famous in Brazil. Without hesitation, go for it. I bet its better than Samsung. ;-)

  • vivo belongs to which country? How is this brand?is this a new company or what?is this company as good as samsung or sony?

  • im not sure about the handphone...i want to suggestion on...

  • hey dude i am using vivo x5max it's really good phone don't buy that samsung A7 if u use 4apps at a time it show unsupport application

  • Hi friends I'm crazy on gadgets I used to buy new arrivals in market..Before buying it I read all user opinions about it,most opinions are negative but I buy it...It was an amazing smartphone to the user...even with 2000mah it gives battery backup and superb design, superb display clarity ...everything superb I love it and I recommend it...some of pupil it was high in price but in my sense it has more features when compared to low range slim smartphone like gionee.....thnx

  • But it dont have both TDD & FDD LTE support ..

  • vivo X5Max

  • yes ,it will be heated when this phone is used up to 30minutes or playing more than 30minutes for more information visit youtube search-unboxing vivo x5 max, review, benchmark, gaming by gadget to use and gionee s5.1 vs oppo r5 vs vivo x5max b y gadget to use

  • Which one is better between VIVO X5Max & Samsung Galaxy A7 ?

  • Does it support FDD & TDD LTE as its having Qualcom Snapdragon 615 ? Does it support 1800 FDD & 2300 TDD bands? Does it support Volte calls ?

  • Does it bend? Does the phone heats so much?

  • Every language what android supports so there's like 180 options from Finnish to Chinese

  • what language on keyboard?

  • Amazing........

  • Hey di x5 max is the worth of money to buy compare to other brand like -samsung,pineapple, htc,Sony, etc. Super battery backup good camera good video quality

  • Vivo x5maxx is the amazing gadget super slim mobile diz is the world slimmest mobile

  • there are too many similar phones except for slim body ..i think. yureka is much better

  • Well , Bro , if you were the person making this phone. How much the price you will you sell it ??

  • really super i just want this

  • How is x5max phone

  • For all who wonders why Vivo phones are so expensive: Because they all stacked professional audio chips found in $1000-worth audio devices. Reviewers and critics found that it makes significant better audio quality than others even iphone6. Personally I am looking to buy one of this X5 Max due to the newest Hi-fi 2.0 that nothing else has.

  • No FM Radio available battery % not shown on task bar.

  • Purchased this slimmest phone ....looks great...not happy with the touch quality and the most disappointing is battery....will not recommend....

  • amazing !!!

  • Silapalajinx, vivo X5Max pretends to be one of the best audiophile phones on the market so it will needs micro sd card to store a collection of huge Flac files. Without it one of X5Max main features is useless. Buyers should be aware of this.

  • Vivo is new brand in the market the price range its to high Vivo should keep the price range in lower side for this phone

  • Depends on your storage needs :) I am not a very video person. For me, 16GB is more than sufficient to store all my pictures, contacts, downloads and mp3 music on the go.

  • Using the second sim card slot as an microsd card slot is a major downside!

  • Bought this phone after contemplating many phones and after much thought. Firstly my needs: - good quality dual-sim phone - preferably with 4G LTE on one sim (there's not many good phones out there with 4G even for one sim) - not too big at 6" and not too small less than 5" - good looking to carry for business and pleasure - good battery life I zeroed in on to buy HTC Desire 820s, but when I went to the store to buy it, it's huge longish screen put me of and the battery life based on some feedback from friends. I came across Vivo X5 (not X5 Max as it is called in this part of the World) and pleasantly found it met all my requirements. Only downside was: - cost; it was quite a premium compared to other Chinese phones and - supposed to be a weak battery @ 2250 mAH. But the store person explained it's "iManager" feature that helps to shut down unused apps automaitcally and save battery. I bought it and using for a week now. Based on my usage, ie long conference-calls and mostly browsing the battery lasts more than a day. Need to add, it's slim profile, premium looks, professional camera options, "air touch" feature where you can unlock and slide without touching the phone and the sturdy aluminium strip along the 4 sides all adds to the really premium look and is a joy to look at.

  • Does LTE works in EU ? What FDD bands it supports? Can you insert two SIMs + sd card same time ? How's screen compare to IPS screens?

  • Superp phone I ever seen ...its very slim an features s awsom ....this phone full til my requirement .....this phone can be used 4G network in both Sim cards

  • Look, all of you chaps without a vivo phone please go and try out the phone before giving comments on bad battery life n all based on your own experience of other brands with similar battery sizes. I have an xshot and the battery is just 2600. Comparing to Huawei p7 with similar battery size 2600mah, or alcatel !+ 2500mah, this phone has never run out of power on me.I had 30% at 12 am daily even with heavy usage. Phone also does not get hot under heavy load like games or clash of clans or GPS or anything, rarely gets hot. Best android phone in the world. Fun os is the best os used so far, smooth like iOS. Go get one.

  • Really world's no 1 mobile in my mobile field

  • Great mobile you can buy

  • we want a dual sim for standard type

  • Its better to buy oneplus one which is lot better after putting together all features, design, battery and price factor

  • Where did you buy this Vivo Max 5 ?

  • I bought the vivo X5Max few days ago and this Smartphone has some really great surprises to unleash. The first things that make me interested in the mobile is that it is the slimmest phone in the world. While when I went on to have a look at the phone, the features surprised me. The first thing was the Funtouch 2.0 OS, that was just awesome to use and especially the smart wake functions was something that was a first for me. Its so easy to access the apps! As I am a big time music junkie and the X5Max has great sounds to rock you. I found the sound system the best I have experienced till now. It provides a double card slot, supports all 4G signals and with a very fast processor the surfing experience is pleasing. The 13 MP camera is good enough and you will not require a higher end, point and shoot camera for pictures. With 128 GB expandable memory, I found the smartphone good enough to have in the 30 k range.

  • The features that make the phone stand out of the crowd are- 1.1080x1920 AMOLED display. 2.Slim body. 3.Hi-Fi 2.0 4.Dual SD card slots But the serious DRAWBACK is its battery of 2000 mah , and its Price ASUS zenfone 2 will give it a great competition with similar specs but priced a lot cheaper... VIVO has to consider things more seriously...

  • can anyone tell me if its worth to buy it? and how is the camera function and Battery performence/

  • its an idiotic phone with such a high price..with 2000 mAh battery supporting amoled display with such high resolution and camera quality is also poor..!

  • dont buy vivo mobile bcz camera quality is too bad, poor battery backup

  • why all vivo phone expensive? it just a good camera but other soso

  • 1 pich

  • On wbay

  • How much cost.. n its upgradeable to lollipop version. any option for battery backup increasing.

  • Waiting for the Audio Benchmark!

  • very poor battery ...........

  • dont worry bro amoled screen needs 80% lesser energy compared to normal LCD or TFT so its fine 2000 mah to deliver decent back up

  • Dude, there's a huge difference between AMOLED and Gorrila Glass. AMOLED is the display technology whereas Gorilla Glass is the protection for the screen.

  • Its looks like super slim and 13 MP camera 5 MP secondary 5.5" amolead screen. I dont no use this phone so I just say somthing... how is this phone..?,and any heating problem...???

  • in process of making slim phone company has place poor power battery..

  • yes bro u r ri8 .... it would be more awsm if this mobyl had gorilla glass 3 instead of amoled screen....

  • When can we buy this one?

  • Honor 6 camera cant compete at all

  • but no gorilla glass

  • Its has octa core processor having two quad core. one quad core of 1.7 GHz and other quad core with 1.0 GHz. Initially 1.7 GHz will be in active mode and 1.0 GHz will be in sleep mode.

  • Its has two quad core processor one with 1.7 GHz and other with 1.0 GHz. 1.7 GHz quad core processor will be in active mode and when necessary 1.0 GHz quad core will work.

  • the camera same honor 6 but honor 6 have better beterry

  • dude... that is freakin' thin...

  • very expensive .. people wold go for iphone 6 for that price or Z3 .. S5 ..

  • If Optimized properly to OS 2000 Mah sufficient. Please clarify us below things:- 1) Since this is 64 bit processor can be upgraded Lolipop. IF yes, when? 2) If we use Nano sim & Sd Card. Apps can be installed on external Storage 3) Service Centres 4) What about Accessories?

  • bro...wjile playing games does ur phone heats up as htc 820 do,,as it has same specs of htc 820..???

  • Friends just don't go with the battery size...vivo 2000 mah battery you can compare with 2600-3000 mah with another company like Samsung Sony...because vivo is a OEM company ..and I'm using x5 max and battery is working super fine if we compare same battery quantity with another brand...for more query drop me mail on [email protected]

  • High-tech but Battery Low-tech...

  • No it isnt .. alpha has 1700 so ..how come that is enough?

  • Battery is very much smaller

  • What about power backup for continues net browsing on 3G/Wi-Fi ? wish it last beyond 2 to 3Hrs

  • Reading the specifications I get the impression that it's an octo-core? Correct me if I'm wrong.. Either dual quad-core or single quad-core with different processors depending on which country release..?

  • it's quad core dude but yeah i have to admit it has a small battery

  • Incredible phone, users will totally enjoy the 30 minutes that it gives out daily lol.

  • the screen will be fine as it is amoled its the processor that will kill the battery

  • All about this phone is good except battery. 2000 is ridiculously low for a 8-core CPU, ultra graphic GPU and 5.2 inches display

  • Good luck with that battery!!!

  • is it comfortable to hold the phone ?

  • with a whopping 401ppi, 2k battery wont last even a day of avg usage... i am suspecting a true charger addict.

  • what about talk time?

  • Battery just 2000 mAh

  • Because of thinness the battery power is low..Another mobile in pool....

  • a handsome guy...haha

  • Get your eyes checked, dude. It's 1080p...

  • Snapdragon 615, 410 PPI at 5.5 inches 2 GB RAM and attractive model looks fine but the battery seems a weak point for this mobile. Anyway battery power also depends on the optimization of software and hardware. So we will have to wait for till hands on

  • I like the Snapdragon 615, BUT, the screen is too big, esp for 720p AND the battery is way too small. back to the drawing board with you.

  • In yer face Apple this is nicer powerful and packs the lot plus 3.5mm jack and 5mp front camera, yamaha chip,2000ma battery...Very impressive and the chip is fast enough with 2gig RAM.

  • will lte/4g work in eu uk ?

  • You make very thin smart phones, but you put a 2000 mAh of battery. You are out of mind!

  • Where to buy this phone?

  • Amazing Phone.... It's feel like a real smart phone not ordinary but something EXTRAORDINARY it gives only vivo Hi-Fi & Smart......

  • fantastic ,,,, wow

  • such a beautiful phone ever seen. Very High Graphics and So much user friendly. i wanna one.

  • bezels look too big for a phone being released in 2014..

  • 4.8 mm thickness... wow

  • battery is 0 i guess

  • Not bad 2 SD card slot up to 32GB Wow! But 4.5mm that to much can't feel the phone any more. Still very interested specs.
