Acer Iconia Tab 8 A1-840FHD - User Reviews

  • I've had this Tablet since 2015 and have not had any problems with it. I do have to start looking for a replacement due to it being sluggish when browsing through the internet. This is expected as with any older electronic devices. Technology moves forward and old devices need replacement. Was very satisfied with it for what I used it for - browsing the web and down loading .pdf files. NO GAMING.. Good bang for the buck on this one.

  • Who care about battery? This tablet is a disaster after 1 year wont turn on but when i connect it on usb the adb driver works and i can see the photo on my laptop but the tablet doesn't turn on and is not vibrate...

  • Terrible battery life 100% in morning and if I don't use it will lose 60% of battery this it even loses 10% when so I have to keep plugged in like a car in the winter

  • I bought this tablet on 2016 @ 77us dollars here in the Philippines. Now 2018 still fine and I manage to root by reading the post on xda forum.

  • its a great tablet performance although it is stuck at Kitkat.Downside is many bloatware apps that eats internal storage capacity. It is hard to find the way how to root and some in Youtube or Xda forum is much complicated.

  • to take screenshot push power button and volume down same time together.

  • U are rt In same boat Appearances are deceptive ThatÂ’s the lesson I bought fr money

  • Even I have a doudt

  • Does it take screenshots??? If, ho to take???

  • Does it take screenshot?

  • J have problem with the tpuch screen,in the middle of the game he stoped working, can someone please help how can j solved this or j should take it to service center?

  • will never buy another acer tablet again. first one the charger kept falling out and wouldn't switch on and the second would switch on, off, on, off and kept doing this for hours.

  • I will never buy another Acer product again. Though the tablet itself is fantastic - great hardware, great build - the OS support is pathetic. With no updates beyond Android 4.4, Acer have just left a good tablet to die. Great way to annoy your customers so that they never become repeat customers, Acer.

  • I bought my Acer inconia 2years ago. It's model is A1840fhd. I have to say, this is the best product of a tab I ever owned! Quad core with 2gig ram plays anything I throw at it! This past Xmas, I got a Nexus9 for a present. After serious benchmarking, the Nexus sits in the corner as a door stop! It's dual core and limitations cannot compare to my devoted Acer!!!! I'm stuck with KitKat apposed to lollipop but, my Acer is far the best over nexus9.............

  • never gonna buy acer again.. no support for upgrade on os

  • I'll never buy another Acer product. Bought two Iconia tab 8 for my kids about a year ago at Costco. Neither will take a charge. What a waste of money. Should have bought two ipad minis.

  • I am using an Samsung Evo micro sd 128 gb in exfat and its working perfectly.

  • The Acer Iconia Tab 8 is a piece of electronic crap. This very pricey tablet can't hold a candle to the Asus ZenPad. Most times, Kindle won't stat. Apps are always crashing and generally the tablet is very slow. I wish that I could get my money back!!!!!

  • 64GB micro sd-card works fine on my Acer Iconia Tab 8 A1-840FHD....

  • Can not open tablet

  • Sound on this tablet is absolutely rubbish. No firmware update what so ever. It even has problems with Google apps like YouTube.

  • Anyone knows how to get the tablet to recognize my 16 gig SD card? I have tried all the tricks in the world...nada!!!!! I like everything about this tablet, just to have it recognize my SD card and I will be happy.

  • no waayyy the battery should be -100

  • This tables is sweet (sort of) Performance 8 Screen resolution 10 Brightness 9 RAM 10 Memory 16gb 7 Camera 7 Speakers 6 GPS hardware -10 (terrible) Battery 8 I wish it had good gps.

  • Rubbish! I haven't even had it 3 months & it's been back to Acer twice. First time was for a defective WiFi unit & second was it's inability to charge. Was contacted by Acer to tell me that the charging adapter was faulty & it's not covered under warranty, did I want to buy one from them? Told them to shove it, I'll get one from Ebay. Build quality is poor, very flimsy feeling & inferior quality plastics used. Sound quality is negligible, touch screen not very responsive & navigation is slow, avoid!

  • I posted in January that my A840 couldn't be turned on after trying all the tricks of the trade ..I reported that it had to be sent in for repair... Came back fine only to have the same problem within about a week. This time Acer paid shipping both ways, repaired it again ... Switch problem seemed to be cured BUT the screen was distorted. So sent back for repair a third time ...a week has gone by but am still waiting for its return! My Acer phone seems to be fine now .. Afer being returned once for repair. So far our A830 is still fine ... Sorry we bought the A840.

  • Mine did the same.hold the power button on for 20 seconds if it doesn't go put it on charge then turn on and it should switch on

  • You can make calls using android or windows devices with Skype free to USA, Canada and Mexico or you can buy time for other countries too

  • Using larger than 32GB does work...sort of. I tried this with one of my 64GB Samsung SD cards, it scrambled/lost some data when I put the SD card back into my Galaxy S5.

  • I got an Acer Iconia Tab 8 in around June 2015. It worked perfectly until recently. Around Christmas, it wasnt really holding a charge for that long. Now the night before last I put my tablet on the charger and i woke up this morning to find that it didnt charge at all. So i switched to a different charger and it seemed to be working, but after 12 hours it only charged to at most 35%. Last night it didnt charge at all. What is going on and how can I fix it?!

  • I've got a different problem. It is constantly saying, "plugged in, not charging." At certain points, I can get it to charge for about thirty seconds to five minutes. There is only one charger that doesn't do this, and I rarely have access to it. Does anyone else have this problem?

  • Have both an A830 which works perfectly so far ...and A840 .. Had the same problem ..... unable to turn it on .. Tried all the tricks of the trade .. Nothing. Contacted Acer they weren't able to help me either so had no choice but to send it in for repair. Had to pay the shipping which I felt unfair however they paid for the return. It has now been repaired and in good working order ...so far so good. Took approx 10 days.Nowhaving read so many reviews from A840 owners this is obvious a faulty mofdel.Acer how about doing a recall and rectifying this issue for once and for all? Btw, the same week I had an issue with my Acer phone .. Had to spend another $8 + shipping and had the inconvenience of being without a phone. Repair and shipping was however done within a few days. My faith in Acer products is dwindling.

  • Android DON'T have bios dude.....

  • hey, i read a review somewhere that the bios has to be updated for issues related to battery. apparently, "The product was shipped with an old BIOS that's wrecking havoc to the battery charging function - the issue was fixed as soon as it's updated...." hope that helps.

  • acer iconia tab 8 isa great for games because it really displays good graphics and smooth performance (in gameeeesss) but the battery is so bad... right now mine is not charging T-T i wish someone could help me fix it :((

  • just bought this tablet a month ago. the battery life is so poor like playing it with full charge and dries up after playing about 4 hour HD games. the rear camera and the video is so poor like the gyro sensor ruining it but the front camera is fine. the gameplay is smooth and nice. if you're looking for tablet that is good for playing but poor battery and camera, I recommend this.

  • I'm thinking about buying acer iconia a1 840. I need navigation. It's mine biggest gemand from tablet. How reliable is navigation on iconinia a1 840? Does it lose the satelite often? Eg. on my lg v400 loosing satelite signal happens quite often. Which tablet is the best on this issue - which works the most reliable as a navigation device with only satelite signal? Thanks!

  • This tablet is wicked! Great screen and performance. I myself have had no issues so far and all games are nice and smooth. Dark knight rises runs awesomely as well as wild blood. Intel SoCs FTW

  • I recently bought a refurbed unit from Acer and it was working good until yesterday when it wouldn't turn on. Apparently there is a "deep sleep" problem with this tablet. I did manage to get it to turn on by pressing the power button for a long time (~30 secs), releasing, then a quick press. Then it booted up fresh. It was going into deep sleep every time the display shut off. There is a detailed thread on the Acer forum: I took a forum member's advice and disabled McAfee. And for good measure, I also disable every other useless preinstalled app. Also at the advice of another poster, I also changed the display sleep duration from 2 minutes to 1 minute. I'm happy to say, the deep sleep problem hasn't occurred since. Maybe I'll switch the sleep duration back to 2 minutes but otherwise I plan to keep all of those apps disabled. Hope it lasts.

  • I have the same prob. w/ yours. i bought the unit last march 23, 2015 after 2 1/2 months the unit shut off. after a month, the service center notified me that my unit is for "buyback" already. in sort, the unit is DEFECTIVE. THE WORST THING is,i WENT BACK TO THE STORE I BOUGHT THE UNIT but then, they can't replace my unit even i have the CASE ID #, even the ACER told them already. Their still asking for some more docs. & as the store policy, i'm the one will go the "distributor" for my item to be replaced.. SO MUCH HASSLE! SO IRRITATING!

  • It works really well battery lasts really long and I love the vibrant colours that you see on the screen. My only wish is that it would have a slot for the sim card. My phone is glitching and I don't have money to buy a new one yet, so I planned to iuse this for now and then I realized that there was no slot for the sim card wwwwwwaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh😦😦😦😦😦&#128550;😦😦😦&#128557;😭😭😭&amp;#128557;😭😭

  • I have used my tablet for months and I usually play on it while it was charging, but know when I was charging it the percent went down... I don't know why so I bought a new charger but it charges slower. Also, the internet sometimes stops working and when I am talking to my friends on OoVoo it freezes and I have to shut it down the on it again.

  • Push your Volume "UP" button, don't release it. Then push and hold down the power button at the same time. Hold in both of them for at least 30 seconds. Your machine will reboot. Follow the instructions on the screen!

  • First, $89 for a refurbished Tab 8 isn't as big a steal as you would believe. That was the Costco price in Dec. of last year. Second, I also experienced the screen flash behavior. I wish I had it back because after it ceased the deep sleep/sleep lock situation began. This lockup while in sleep mode happens now with every use. I've tried deleting and shutting down apps to no avail. Could it have anything to do with McAfee AV running? It came standard on these devices and could be a common thread. Holding the power button for about twenty seconds then release and push again will restart the device but is that a solution? I like the idea of the class action suit. Now that would be a solution.

  • Got my iconia 8 yesterday,, this morning I charged it fully... I went out to my therapy session so i leave my tablet on the house, when i came back my iconia is off and i cant turn it on...

  • Really helped.. Thanks

  • I went through a few tablets and bought an acer a1-830.mfg. sept. 2014 from acer factory refurbished. It was just like a brand new one. New ports, buttons and completely new casing, or skin. Have never had any issue and it cost 89.00 was a steal

  • For those experiencing the shutdown problem in this tablet, try holding the lock button for 15-20 seconds, release it and click it immediately. It works to my iconia tab 8 :)

  • One week after buying the device, he began to have trouble to power up and two months later stop working

  • I got the device on the night of my birthday a couple of days ago and it works. When its done fully charged or after turning on while locked, it appears as I press the power button at the right, a black screen shows with no screen view.

  • I have no issue with mine except there are bugs with the screen flickering every 10 mins but that's it really!

  • Same here they made me wait a month for them to repair it and I have had it one day and it's already doing the same thing... It is faulty and we should get our money or a better tablet... I will take this to court if I have to... Its obvious there is a defect with this product and the customers should be taken care of.

  • OK so I see I am not alone with the issue of the Acer Iconia Tab 8. I had it for a couple of weeks and then it just shut off and never turned back on. I sent it for repair and I have had it one day and it did the same thing. I waited a month to get it back for this to happen again... Not happy with Acer company... We aren't here to test your "faulty products" and then be told that I can't get it replaced. I waited a long time to be able to afford a tablet and then this happened... Will never buy another Acer product again... Buyers beware

  • Try holding the power button for a few seconds and see if it turns on.

  • It happens to my Iconia Tab 8 too and idk how to open it again, hope someone knows how to fix tis issue.

  • Have mine for 3 days. Was working perfectly then switched off and won't go back on. How did you get yours to switch back on?

  • Why? Mine's working

  • Why? Mine's working

  • bluetooth doesnt work

  • I've had the same problem twice now

  • I also had the same thing after 2 weeks of use... Motherboard was replaced and since then no issues at all!

  • Sure

  • of course you can play on this device not only in 2015 but in other year you can play with this tab heehehe....

  • Plzz reply my question me play 2k15 tab 8 a1-840fhd

  • hi guys, i have an Acer A1_811 im planning to sell it and ,change to A1_840. will it be worth a change. need ur users suggestions. thanks!

  • Why does the Lenovo Tab S8 with same screen size, resolution, cpu/gpu/chipset combo and with LOWER battery capacity last longer than this tablet?! Check the battery life section:

  • I can get 4-5 hours (screen on-time) of web browsing with a 100% battery level until it reaches 0%.. Has anyone been able to find a way to extend the battery life?

  • I just bought it two days ago and updated right away. The split screen in google is perfectly fongvwith my unit

  • have you tried to insert an sd card on it? Remove it then switch it on I havethe sae problem too hope this help

  • As far as i know you CANT. Only uses WiFi.

  • I just bought mine today at Funan centre. Same problem as you. After some navigation, i switched off and could not switch on again. Where did you buy yours? What did you do?

  • how can I connect an internet modem with this tab?

  • Great design but the battery can't even last a day, you have to charge it 2-3 times a day and some other games don't work but the performance of this device is good.

  • I just got mine today. Was casually loading some photos on it and it just pinged off and won't power back on. No dropages or anything.

  • Just to let you guys know even though the Acer specs says up to 32 gb expansion iv tested a 64gb micro sd straight into the micro sd slot on my unrooted devices and reads it perfectly the exact sd card i have used with it is sandisk ultra give a shot

  • Just Got My Acer Tab From School and i was wondering how does one get mobile networks cause i have been searching and there's noluck and i find it useless if i wont be able to access the internet from home

  • rooted mine on just yesterday. SDfix is godsend for anything above 4.1

  • I have been trying to root this device and find it impossible. I have rooted many devices before but this one does not seem to have anything to root it

  • My Iconia Tab 8 is in Android 4.4.4 and SPLIT-SCREEN is not showing in chrome (I know chrome is supported by the feature) kindly help please..

  • Acer Iconia is not switching on, it seems it is not charging the battery. What can I do?

  • Serious issue with the power button, randomly it will not power on even you try for 20-30 min, send it back, they said nothing wrong, fedex it to me, then issue come out, THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!

  • You have to set the volume using the hardware keys so that the warning dialog about the safety of using high volumes will be displayed. You have to click ok on that dialog so you can use the higher volumes.

  • The sound, speakers, and headphone crackles on this Acer tablet was what lost it for me. I went for another tablet with louder clearer speakers. But the other features (eg. HDMI, cpu, ram) on this tablet (FHD 1920x1200 version sold at Amazon) were the best compared to the competition. It also had the best 3dmark gfx benchmarks compared to other tablets at this price, so that made it a hard decision for me. This is a perfect tablet esp. the true FHD version(if you can live with subpar speakers) and slightly less bright LCD screen. HDMI is also this tablet's saving point.

  • Took tablet home and was easy to set up. Was pleased with tablet until I plugged in headphones. I could not believe how bad the sound was when playing youtube videos. Every time tried to put sound up to max (which was very poor at maxium level),the sound reverted to default about halfway along bar. I first thought headphones were at fault, so used headphones with cheap MP3 player & headphones were load and clear. I don't know how Acer can sell a tablet with so so poor sound with headphones. If you like to listen to your tab in whisper mode, then this is the tablet for you.

  • i have acer portable projector. which model acer tablate is compatible to connect directly to projector?

  • I bought three of these for my sons on Christmas and every one of them have issues stemming from the power button. Two shut off by themselves and at times refuse to power back on and the power and volume buttons popped out of place on third tablet on Christmas day. My brother in law bought four for his girls and has experienced the power issues on two of theirs also. Not sure why I expected more as I only paid $100 each thru Costco but I figured if they were selling them I'd be getting a quality product. Glad I have my old Apple products so they can have games to play . I definitely would not recommend this tablet to anyone

  • I Agree this tablet is great on speedy performance, but the competition is there: Lenovo s8-50, Asus me572, and samsung galaxy. It's close but Acer has hdmi & barely beats them in benchmarks. So all of them remain equally good choices depending on which form factor you like, small, thin, better sounding speakers or brighter sharper screen ,etc. I had both Acer& Lenovo but ended up keeping Lenovo. I would have kept both if I needed 2 tablets.

  • It has quite a lot of internal space as well, but do you really need all that memory? It's a very powerful and competent tablet. For this price, I can't see any competition. I am very satisfied with this Iconia.

  • Thanks.

  • AstroFile manager app already comes with Acer & is seems faster, so use that for file transfer. Hold down file you need and menu shows copy and paste function.

  • File manager app by cheetah allows it. Hop down file brings up menu for copy, cut, paste. Not sure if there r better apps to do it faster.

  • How to move apps on sd card for this device?

  • Some apps won't work

  • My first day using, got 7hrs 20min from 2hrs video from ext hdd in airplane mode brightness down, and atleast 3+hrs light webpage browsing with very little video streaming, maybe 1+hr idle time. Got through most of the day with light casual use. I noticed cpu-z identified DPI of display as 320. Is there a way to turn it down to 240dpi to get smaller icons and characters on screen? (maybe rooting?)

  • Yes.Battery beckup is better on 4.4.4.

  • Just finished installing the latest update. Split screen only works with a few apps, chrome and youtube in particular. I hope they add split screen support for more apps. Android version is still 4.4.2.

  • Theres a new update available for split screen support among other things. Downloading it now.

  • Have u tried turning brightness setting down all the way and put it on airplane mode.? It supposed to get 5-7hrs doing that. But as you use wifi & turn brightness up and have too many unnecessary software auto updating, that may be reason for the draw on battery (eg.3-4hrs). I'll be receiving one of these tablets in a couple days, so I'll give my own feedback of battery later.

  • the battery drains fast....

  • anybody got the latest android 4.4.4 kitkat for iconia a1 840 FHD? and how is it? is the android 5 lollipop available. when do they release?

  • I do... Why is that?

  • What do you do exactly when you're surfing? Read? I get 4hours of straight heavy web browsing.. This includes video streaming... Also not just reading... YouTube with Facebook videos as well.. Battery is terrible really...

  • I am not having the problems with battery life and regularly get 7-8hours of use with both WiFi and Bluetooth on and in use. I suspect that this is connected with the fact there is no ambient light sensor and the fact the Intel SoC does something rather clever with the back light and the display. This can be seen it you go to adjust the screen brightness manually .... you will find there is virtually no difference in screen appearance with maximum and minimum settings. It appears the SoC actively reduces the backlight while changing the display to minimise power usage. With the brightness control wound down to 0 to 10% I find the screen is still legible in all but bright sunlight and I get a long battery life. If I wind the brightness all the way up the screen isn't much brighter except in bright sun and I get the 4 or less hours battery life others appear to get. The sdcard is NOT limited to 32gb as I can use both 64gb and 128gb cards.

  • The battery is its major flaw...

  • The battery is really poor... Continuous WiFi with moderate volume for youtube won't reach 4hours from full charge. It's snappy with a very beautiful screen. But the battery is truly a major turn off....

  • Bought this 3weeks ago.... The tablet is snappy and all... But the battery i judt poor... Does not follow what it has declared... 3hours of WiFi is jut poor... That's from full charge btw

  • BTW is anyone else experiencing blacking of part of the screen for a split second particulary in chrome but Ive noticed it on the app menu and on es file explorer. It seems to be a rendering issue since I think the popup menu in chrome and the on screen buttons and the notification bar are still displayed, but Im not very sure since it happens so fast.

  • Battery dropped around 20% after one hour of reading a pdf file with light web browsing and spotify in background.

  • I am currently using a 64gb Sandisk card so the stated limitation to 32gb doesn't seem to apply. The battery life is around 5-6 hours. The main omission is the sensor to allow automatic brightness control. Just waiting for an update to lollipop and then I'll be quite happy.

  • May i ask how much battery percentage is lost for one hour of web browsing under wifi?

  • This tablet is an outstanding tablet. I bought it and it works perfectly, doesn't stutter and the screen is very good. This tablet is the best choice in the range of 200 euros

  • After I downloaded the update from the settings menu, my external HDD (WD Elements 1TB) now works using OTG :D

  • nope

  • Pls is it a 3g network tab?

  • There is also otg. It detected mu flash drive but it couldn't detect my external hdd. Although the hard drive does light up and spin.

  • There is also otg. It detected mu flash drive but it couldn't detect my

  • Just got this tablet today. Display is great. I ran the Phone Tester app from the play store and it shows that this tab does have both accelerometer and gyroscope and the display supports 10 finger multitouch. Sound out of earphones is great but the built in speakers are not very loud. Viewing angles are very good. I just hope I can find a case and screen protector. The device also warms up even when just browsing with wifi -- not as hot as my laptop but enough to make my hands a little sweaty. I haven't tried gaming yet though so I don't know how hot it might get or how well it performs. The bezels are a little wide and the width at the bottom part is a little off-putting but I think it's better for the side bezels to be wide to prevent accidental presses. The UI is smooth but you can sometimes notice periods of low frame rate. The back camera has autofocus but no flash. I expected the quality of the shots to be better however. I'm still looking for a case and screen protector though.

  • Please someone comment on sound quality on the headphone out not the speaker of this tab ,want to buy tab with good sound output i am an audiophile..

  • I am waiting for this tab to come to UAE market. Hope this will be reasonably priced too..

  • Oops. Finally saw a brochure. Yup, indeed the Tab 8 has gyro sensor! Which means the aforementioned apps were in compatible due to most probably the OS compatibility.

  • Are you sure it has gyro? Then why do some compass apps at Google Play indicate that my unit isn't compatible with it? Whereas my Asus ZenFone 5 was able to download it and it performs well.

  • My bad and my apologies. The last word was misspelled terribly. It should be 'mAh' juice. Again, my apologies...

  • I have this now for more than a day. After initial charging (required 4 hours as per Acer), I immediately used it connected to Wi-Fi. With almost non-stop use (screen almost always on at 10% brightness (screen is really great), I got to about 5 hours before the battery went dead. That included about 30 or so minutes of 3D (Asphalt 8) and 2D (PvZ2) gaming. A little disappointed actually. But perhaps it would do better in a video loop test. I hope. Haven't tested it yet. My Asus MeMo Pad 7 HD fared better last time I used it in my initial tests (7 to 8 hrs.), though I think I wasn't connected; just tinkering with the device and playing some games. In comparison, I also have the Asus ZenFone 5 which I bought 3 weeks ago, and that phone lasted 3:45 to more than 4:30 with Wi-Fi on, screen constantly on, benchmarking, playing games, surfing the net, and a lot if background apps. FYI, Acer has 4600 mAh (i didnt know that; it's just listed as 17Wh); MemoPad is rated at 3,950 mAh; ZenFone has 2,110 man juice). HTH

  • I can verify that it does indeed have a gyro sensor made by Invensense.

  • Several people want to know about the battery life. I have had this tablet since June (yes, long before the official release) and so far I have noticed that it's battery seems to give me much less time than what I get out of my Nexus 7 (the only device I have to compare with). The tablet is larger but I doubt the size of the screen is the root cause. It could be software or it could be a difference in running an Intel vs. ARM processor (maybe both?). Real world experience feels like I get roughly 1/2 to 3/4 the battery life of my Nexus 7. It will last me several days with my usual usage but my Nexus will give me more like a full week of similar usage. Really I wouldn't say it's battery life is terrible considering that I'm used to charging several of my devices every day but I'm sure it could be better. Perhaps a future software update will help.

  • Someone please comment about its battery life.

  • how does the battery life???

  • Kinda disappoint that it don't have gyro sensor.. (helps in certain game titles).. But if it priced right then I may consider it...

  • The limitation to 32 GB MicroSD cards is the reason I will not buy this tablet. I already have 64 GB and 128 GB cards.

  • It would be perfect if the screen is still 4:3 aspect ratio as 830 and 810 series.

  • Looks great, great specs & you know what - I love these a bit bigger bezels! I don't get the no-bezels-trend with tablets, come on, not everyone has hands big enough to hold it from the back(its a tablet not a phone). Its actually very comfortable to be able to grab the tablet between 2 fingers on the side without warring that you'll touch the screen; that's how I always hold my old galaxy tab. Plus great screen and processor, 2 GB of RAM and probably nice price... good work Acer, I just found my new tablet :)

  • More btter then A1 830..
