Kyocera Hydro C5170 - User Reviews

  • Seen as how keyocera was and still is a kitchen knife company they should have just stayed in their own territory

  • Only thing good about this phone is you can throw it farther than others without breaking it. Other than that it sucks. The software is glitchy, and the power port is always needing a new cord after a month or so.

  • That slot is for the micro SD card, NOT the Sim card

  • YES

  • This pos may be cheap but the service costs are not. I never expected it to act like Bentley i wanted it to act like a phone, but it didn't. Constantly crashing fully charged, restarting on its own fully charged, hanging up and dropping calls on its own in fully covered areas. I admit two of these problems went away, but that was only after removing all third party apps and disabling six others.

  • Factory reset is the only thing I've done that works for the memory issue. removing third party apps helped with other issues. Still have apps crashing, but that seems to be a google play problem.

  • A reasonably fast processor. A responsive touch screen. Good call quality. Respectable battery life. A decent camera. If these are things that you value in a smartphone, then my advice to you is to stay AS FAR AWAY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE from the Kyocera "Hydro" 5170. It takes several minutes to load any websites in the browser over the 3G connection (if they even load at all - half the time the browser crashes and force quits.) More often than not, simple tasks like bringing up the app list or dialer screen get stuck on a blank screen with the spinning "please wait" indicator for a minute or more before the desired operation is carried out. I have to charge this thing at least three times a day - often just loading one web page over the 3G connection can eat up 5% or more of the battery. Making calls on it is an exercise in futility. The person on the other end constantly alternates between a normal voice and sounding like they are on the other side of a room - and you will do the same to them. The camera is blurry and grainy even when sitting perfectly still on a table or counter. Taking photos in the dark or in low light is out of the question. Oh - and I suspect that it is in fact not really "waterproof." Do your research on this one. You've been warned.

  • then why does it only happen on this phone and not every Android phone. it is not an Android problem it is a Kyocera problem I have owned 3 Kyocera phones in my life every time I have instantly regretted the decision to buy one they are all crap

  • Note that when you move an app to the SD Card, it will not show up on the home screen after you power down and restart. This is because Android boots the fie manager and icons BEFORE it mounts the SD Card. In other words, the phone doesn't see the apps on the SD Card until it has already loaded the icons on the home screen. This is an issue with Android -- NOT your phone.

  • I'm using the hydro phone which sim card is not inserted in Ghana, how do I use it?

  • I'm having the same issue with the storage, anyone ever get back to you on that?

  • Did you ever find it im still looking myself

  • NO! It is NOT there! It has a 2 GB. micro. memory card installed in the upper left corner but nothing else under the battery.

  • I've had this phone for more than a year now and it's been ran over in the lake about 3 times, and left at the lake and some random person got it back to me. It works fine and I'm not having any problems.

  • This phone is junk!! I started having problems the day I received mine, it won't charge , it shuts off and freezes constantly.. I called to get it replaced and Q Link refuses to replace it unless I pay $25.. NOT. Plus the same day I got it all these sex sites were down loaded into the phone & I can not delete them. I caled the same day and they still wouldn't replace it!! My 13yr old daughter uses that phone and pornographic pics keep piping up.. not happy

  • You'll find your SIM under your battery in the back of your phone.

  • Well everyone is right, it's a piece of crap! I'm glad i got it free of if be REALLY upset! I had trouble with it 2 days after i got it regarding the storage. I don't understand, it's suppose to have 7 or 8 gb internal memory/storage, with 4gb supposedly for the user. Well total amount when you check inside the phone says 3.88 and all the phone company bs is used on that. SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER 4GB??? It won't let you put hardly anything on the sd card and the things i was able to move disappeared off the home screen everytime the phone restarted! Now it's doing somemore weird stuff, when i unlock screen instead of home page coming up, the recent call menu comes up. Now i can't rotate my screen, the button is grayed out on the home screen pull down menu and the on/off option in the display setting somehow mysteriously disappeared!!! I don't understand because before i got this one (free) and only because i wanted a bigger screen, is using the Hydro Icon, i loved that phone, it's great! But this one doesn't hold a candle to it! I don't know if part of the problem is in the service provider or what. I'm using metro pcs, with the Icon was using Boost Mobile. Well either way when my payment is due again I'm switching back to the other phone and back to Boost!!!

  • i had 3g for a while how do i get it back

  • My phone got broke so I thought I could take the SIM card out an put in another boost phone he'll I can't find where the SIM card is suppose to go anyone know where it us I have a hydro edge c5170

  • 2 + 2 = 4 ALL DAY EVERYDAY I keep reading what a POS this phone is quickly followed by a statement about paying $9.99 out the door. Yall do know that a new Samsung S6Edge has a retail value of $649 right? You carry around a computer in your pocket that cost you less than $10 and you think it should last a year???? At $650 over 24 months my phone costs me roughly $27 a month before the price of a the plan. That's EACH month. All phones are way overpriced and you can thank your cell phone providers for that. Paying just a bit more for a phone would get you a much nicer device and be sure to protect the phone. If you don't have a case on your smartphone or you have a bedazzled hello kitty plastic piece of crap pretending to be a case on your phone you've got no one to blame but yourself. "Why don't my Kia ride like a Benz, I paid $12,500 for this damn thing?"

  • Where do i put my sim card? (Line)

  • Its under the battery.take bbattery out and be easy opening little door.card slides into door, then close little door.if not careful u can pull whole door off.it goes back on.has 2 little stubs, one in each corner.they go inside holes.hope this helps

  • This phone was good the first month. Now All I get are the little black pop ups that google not responding, voice mail not responding, maps not responding, and so on. I have to click out of about 20 of them before I can use anything on the phone. Maps will just start then tell me not responding. It takes me over five minutes just to make a call. I can never click out of the black boxes fast enough to answer a call. Most of the time the screen will not come on. I will have to take the battery out to get it to work again. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. IT IS GARBAGE.

  • The Kyocera is not the best phone by far, but it is an ok one though. Well, for as cheep as it is anyway. For those who are having problems saving apps and media: Steps to move applications to and from the memory card on your Kyocera Hydro Edge Move applications to the memory card to free up internal memory. 1. From the home screen, tap the Menu key. 2. Tap System settings. 3. Scroll to and tap Apps. 4. Swipe to the Downloaded tab. 5. Scroll to and tap the preferred application. Move the application to the memory card: Tap Move to SD card. Move the application from the memory card: Tap Move to phone. 6. You've now moved the application to or from the memory card. Note: Some applications may not work as expected after you've movedthem to the memory card. Not all applications can be moved tothe memory card.

  • This is the best waterproof, durable phone I've ever owned..It's been run over by a 4x4..Dropped several times, taken pictures under water, been in the River, and the ocean..I have had it since it came out..The screen has never "spider webbed"..I factory reset it, and it works like new...Maybe I got the best one they made..A+...

  • Yes you are right in your assessment. I have been reading these comments and a few others from another web page. I am "trying" to figure out how to delete these wallpaper ID Packs that I no longer want. Is it possible? They are taking up space and my Hydro was the $85 cheapie Boost Mobile had a yr. ago. Thank you Antoinette

  • I've had this phone bout a year now with not alot of problems til now. The longer you have it, the more apps you'll want but you'll run out of internal memory & not much you can do about it. Phone won't let you save new stuff to the sd card, everything set to go to internal memory. Also, how in the hell can i erase junk mail?? Says 999+ emails...I'm sure thats slowing my phone down!! I wouldn't have bought it if I knew I could download stuff to my SD card, especially since i put a 32g card in & can't save stuff on it & phone says insufficient storage. Now it's worthless, can't even upgrade apps - no phone memory left even after I moved a few apps to sd card that it would let me move which is maybe 5...big deal. I'm looking for a new phone. If you don't need much storage then it might do ok. Good luck, tho!

  • I'm just going to say DONT BUY THIS PHONE.This phone according to the tech specs is a mobile , waterproof, masterpiece but when i got it I had realized my mistake because the phones apps constantly crash, has a hard time just playing music (which is on the phone's SD card!) and mine as well be considered a waterproof toaster. Even with top recommended cleaning and scanning apps, it runs like a NES , I shouldn't even compare it to that because it can't even run a simple NES emulator! The only good thing about this phone is that it's waterproof and VERY durable, I emphasise on durable because I can't tell you how many times i have thrown the phone across my bedroom in frustration of it not being able to perform the most simplistic tasks such as app selection, and the most of the time, getting reaction lag when trying to change the volume. In short this is another screwup of a phone that a potato with an 8-bit processor strapped on can compute faster and with less glitches ( exaggerating, but this is a crap mobile computer )

  • It's a terrible phone. There is very little space to begin with, and there are too many pre-installed programs. The phone is super, super slow and is always turning off, freezing, and closing apps. When I make calls, the person can never here me, due to the quality of the phone. Also, the camera is awful, it doesn't have any good quality. The only good thing about this phone, is it's waterproof.

  • i have the kyecera c5170 phone dualcom but i cant locate the simcard slot how can i see the sim card slot?

  • I had one about two years back. Lasted 13 months great phone at $1oo back then. Upgraded to the MotoG great company Motorola only problem is. They spent more time fixing my phone than i did using it!{had a car like that once }LOL. Anyways i dropped the Moto G in the toilet that was that. So i am looking through the paper and i see the Hydro on sale for $40 at a local store. I ran there and grabbed the last one. Best damn phone for the money IMHO!

  • I broke one already

  • So my phone keeps turning off when I press the volume up or down does anybody know how to fix this I have the hydro life

  • I bought a HydroExtrm phone. This is my first smart phone and learned a lot about how to use one. I also learned not to ever buy a Kyocera phone again. This phone is slow and does strange shit.It is a durable phone but that's it.Soon I,m to find out how tough it is BOOM !peice of SH.

  • sir i put pattern lock for my phone but unfortunnately i forget that pattern.plz help me how can i comme back to old posittion now its shown to type mail id and password but my phone wifi and data pack is off.

  • This phone is a POS. It doesn't understand English when you talk text. The keyboard is to small and punches up letters at will. I quit the talk text. It made me look like an idiot. This company should get the heck out of the cell phone business. They don't have a clue. I could go on and on, but I can sum this piece of junk up in 2 words......It sucks

  • I got the hydro edge and had the first hydrp befpre upgrading. The phone is awesome in longevity and for it to do whatever you can want from any android. Only drawback is its npt lighning fast. I can stream movies pn Netflix no problem so its fast enough for me........ your just a hater that probly needs a dumbphone cause a smartphone seems to be too much for you to handle.

  • Some people are saying that this phone is horrible, I love it. I've had it for about a year now and has completely withstood my job, being the last place you'd want to bring a phone - a waterpark. Through every drop in water, even down to 6ft, it's never stopped working. The speed isn't that great, it's still a budget phone for the most part, but I love it overall. It just depends on your expectations, whether it's going to be great or terrible.

  • I totally agree with you, this phone is my worse nightmare. I bought the phone weeks ago, the audio is terrible, the phone shot down, the keyboard is a pain, and recently showed that the SD card was removed (not idea why) and when I check the my pics and videos were deleted completely...grrrr OMG!!. When I to go the store they say, they don't know why the phone did that, when you call the insurance they send you to the manufacturer, when you call the manufacturer, they tell you have to wait until they work on some things, if not, you need to send the phone, WAIT 10 days and they will send you a refurbish phone... PLEASE PLEASE DONT BUY Kyocera phone they are PIECE OF ..... CRAp

  • How do you root it?

  • How do you get the blank SD card Icon to go away?

  • I dont know where i insert my mini sim card :/

  • this phone does give me a lot of problems then I gotta charge it up like 3 or 4 times a day while using it which is completely ridiculous, but one thing I can say is this thing really is waterproof and is almost bulletproof I killed a bee with mine today

  • this is a great phone once it is rooted. and its very simple to root it with superuser and poot, its a pos without root.

  • I thought it was OK til it starting shutting off during calls. The on/off switch turns off by itself.Time to switch provider.

  • im sorry that does not define irony.

  • All the reviews on this piece of junk are true!!!!!!. There are one or two good reviews but they are written by the manufacture of this hunk of junk.!!!! I paid $9.99 for this piece of debris but it has caused me. $100.000 worth of grief. I through mine at a brick wall. It made me so mad

  • This phone is a decent Peirce of crape. Keeps disconnecting from wifi. I use the phone for clash of clans and it makes me mad because I get disconnected when I'm in a raid. Jap crap. Will not get another. 1-10 I give a big f u kyo

  • outside of the phone being waterproof iit blows isn't ironic water can't get inside to destroy the s*** that don't work

  • I thought maybe I just got a bum phone. Reading these posts, I see a lot of people have issues same as mine. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE this ridiculously poor phone. The Hydro has GOT TO BE BY FAR THE WORST PHONE EVER MADE. I paid only 9.99 for it at Target and it isnt worth it. It is hideouslyslow, has a million glitches, battery life SUCKS, touchscreen accuracy blows...there is NOTHING good I csn say about this piece of gsrbage. These arent typos, the keyboarf suvkd snd sometimes correcting just maked it worse. I HATE this piece of ctap.

  • I have had this phone for a week I hate it already. Had the problem with inability to end a call but worst of it is bad signal for data and call all static. Battery takes forever to charge and dies quickly even when I don't use it

  • Not the best phone: camera and memory are not adequate. Otherwise, it the best out of the cheap Androids. No hang ups, no major problems.

  • If I got it for free I would be disappointed. I paid $20 for it and feel cheated. Slow from the start. Poor quality camera. I had a late 2010 Samsung before. It blows this 2013 model of Kyocera away. It is a mystery how it performs so poorly. Most constant hang up is phone display goes blank after a few seconds. Have to keep hitting side buttons to light up display again. Real pain when navigating businesses automated phone systems. You can adjust in battery saving mode how long screen stays lit on regular smart phone functions/apps. But has no bearing on how long display stays lit on regular phone function. It is like someone designed it to annoy people. Volume of ring tones is ok but could be better. But oddly enough speaker phone volume is lacking. Any little bit of ambient background noise will overwhelm speaker phone volume. And then must turn speaker phone off and just hold it to your ear. Phone is water proof but I would never put it to the test. Plastic case and screen feel and look very cheap but is durable and does not scratch or Mar. I would rate touch sensitivity of screen 4 out of 10. Touch sensitivity is usable and not too annoying but there are much better.

  • Show how SD card goes in

  • The thing is that the updtaes from google play and the system updates are too large of files that the phones memory gets more full faster and that causes for the phone to run slower and freeze up once you've downloaded applications the only best thing to do is update phones if your trying to use it for applications, for example its lik a car if u put more weight than the usual and the limit it will start heating up and causing it to rturn off, its the same thing with the phones memory the updates are becoming larger and the phones capacity cant support it.

  • My experience is the phone mandated i set a passcode....after three (3) times of it setting itself and mandating i set a password, i lost everything, three times. Ok, i set a password, to get past the problem, and guess what, the damn thing freezes up. Now it will not even power up? What a piece of crap.

  • I love this kyocera C5170 phone but it has slowed down they need to fix that problem an it freezes up on a reg bases if they could only fix those two problems it would b great.

  • this happens to all of the kyocera phones i have the rise and the same thing happened and there is no fixing it but its because its the way they make their phone the mother board is running what its not spose to they make to to run faster but its no diffrent than a simple basic phone they try to put your phone on crack so it makes their company more succsesful than what they were when they first started out and thats your problem

  • I've had this phone for about 6 months. The number of times it has locked up has left me extremely disappointed with Kyocera. It really should have fixed this problem by now. No more Kyocera phones for me.

  • This phone is absolutely TERRIBLE! The first day it froze up and i brushed tht off but OMG ive had it for some months & it freezes then shuts off (this can last minutes).. not helpful when i really need to call,it crashes on EVERYTHING! Apps, gallery, etc. Its very slow & bad camera. Its good at first but DONT WASTE your money.

  • I have had absolutely no problems at all with this phone.

  • this phone sucks big time i have had nothing but bad luck. it locks up, cant get the dia\l pad up , and when in a call the other person has to hang up, because i cant disconnect... waist of money and a big waist of time , do not buy this phone!!

  • i am thinking about buying this phone is it Good?

  • I think the carousel Hydro is a pain in the butt phone I think the carousel Hydro is a pain in the butt phone. It's so awful I had to say that twice. it always turns off or doesn't respond it's the worst phone I've ever used and it's the worst phone I've ever owend the only good thing is its water resistant but it dosent even stay on long enough to try to have water splash on it don't buy this phone unless you want a headache all day

  • I have an older wifi router that i use at home. An old d-link 524 series... 802.11 a, b, g. It works just fine. Connects just fine.

  • The camera does not work at all...can I take this stupid phone back...it even erased all the old photos brought over from my old phone...what a piece of crap

  • A delightful handheld to use, but the Wifi connectivity leaves a lot to be desired. Connections to older routers do not produce internet connectivity. Even new routers seem to have problems with compatibility........please fix this; as I can find nothing else to complain about.

  • Only down fall is the camera

  • Oh Em Gee?! defy in that you? lol

  • soooooo bad camera for a nice mobile !!
