Motorola V195 - User Reviews

  • Awesome phone! I got it in 2006 and used it until 2010 when it got drenched in a rainstorm. It stopped working after that, and now in 2016 it's back in commission! This thing is a beast!

  • Both myself and my wife have had V195s since about 2006. We have taken them thru out the world since we got them unlocked. Just slip in a county SIM and we can go! They are the most rugged cell phones and have quality voice. I have two reserve V195s if the originals ever die. I keep checking for something as sinple, high quality, rugged, and great voice and have not found it!

  • hummm! Would u believe i still own this phone after years of faithful service! Unfortunately im just not getting any service from it now! but great ph anyway and could take pressure.Imagine my ph fell in water, urine, lol, fell on concrete and was stepped on and was still working without fault or breaking or cracking! I think they should make another one just like this but with a camera.Hurts me to have to part with it now!

  • The Motorola phone for the elderly looks good. However, I find it too bulky. If my father puts it in his purse, it will definitely look awkward in it. Anyway, I was really attracted to purchase this phone the first time I have learned its features. When I checked out the reviews that were written about it though, I learned that this phone has a poor call quality. This claim has been consistent in the reviews I have read so I hesitated to pursue my plan to get this phone for my father. Well yeah, nothing to fret anyway because in my search, I found a good alternative, which I believe, is a more viable choice. Its the Just5 phone. Just5 does not present unimportant features for the elderly. Everything counts a lotfrom its physical make up to the way the phone functions. And yeah, I should never forget to mention that it is being offered at a very affordable cost that does not come with an agreement. It is simple yet perfect. www.Just5.com

  • press the MENU key above the 5-way navigation key

  • I have had a t-Mobile issued V195 for 5 years. The phone has been dropped many times, falling from my open car door onto pavement and concrete and has been bounced around in bags. It continues to work well and keeps a charge for a long time. It does not have a camera, but can receive MMS. It can send email in a rudimentary way. I know longer have data service but had used it as a tether modem with success. I do use the IM feature of the phone with both Yahoo and AIM. I am a little amazed that so many people have had problems with it. I even bought another unlocked V195 from some online place just so I could have one once my current one dies. For email, I use a Peek (www.getpeek.com). I do get iPhone envy once in awhile, but I use the money I would have spent on data services on chocolate and beer. The V195 is a simple phone that does voice service well. Also, it is a quad band, so if I ever do that motorcycle trip from paris to Beijing, it will work well everywhere I go. I am surprised that so many people have had bad experiences with this model. I am tempted to buy another unlocked V195, since they are no longer manufactured and the phone has been so reliable.

  • I have had a V195 through t-mobile for YEARS! It has taken a ton of abuse and works great. I am a little amazed at all the negative comments. Sure, it doesn't have a camera, but it has been a solid simple and practical phone for going on 4 years now.

  • Simply the best Motorola I have ever owned. Everything but the camera it comes with for that type of phone. works still flawlessly after 3 years.

  • Bought a v195 for $40.00 with pre-pay plan. good call quaility and good screen resolution, but the phone lasted for 1 year. it's a good basic phone but not long lasting.

  • I recently got this phone from t-mobile.com.I paid 29.95 plus a free 25 dollar prepay refill...so the phone actually cost me 5 dollars. If you are looking for a simple phone with long battery life and great call quality then look no further. The v195 from t-mobile prepay is the best deal going

  • Best Motorola I have ever owned. Super battery-life, fantastic clarity and reception. A definite winner. Still works fine after 2 years

  • i bought one 2 years ago and i used ut real rough but it still works real fine !!!!

  • The manufacturers of these handsets in particular, should be issued sanctions in terms of quality production, by the government of its origin. This phone has absolutely no standard of quality. Its frequency adaptation and adjustments are extremely poor..get these phones off the shelves..!! thank you..

  • Purchased two v195s a few months apart. After a 3 or 4 months, the signal strength dropped from 4 or 5 bars to 0 and 1 bar on the first unit. We have two of these so we can do side by side signal strength comparison. Have swapped batteries and sim cards between the phones, did not help. Due to signal issue, it has trouble making and receiving calls as well as accessing T-Zone. After owning the second phone for 4 months, it no longer plays sounds through the speakerphone. This means incoming calls does not ring. Manually play sound but no ring tones are heard. While on call, speakerphone doesn't work. I see in previous post, others had issue with the speaker phone as well.... Other than these quite important issues, no service or no incoming ring alert, the phone has been great.

  • Phonebook issue - How do get the v195s to change between phone & sim card . on page 50 in motorola manual can't seen to find the [-] key

  • this is a good phone only one draw back no camera

  • This is a great phone in terms of talk time hours, battery life and reception. But theres only one problem with this..can anyone tell me wheres the camera..? this is the only good thing missing from this perfect phone...also, is this a quad or tri band..?

  • needs a camera

  • Hi, Jan. I had the exact same problem with my SamsungT209. I could receive messages but couldn't send them. I'm with T-Mobile too and they fixed it although it took about a month of convincing. I had a motorola V180 before this and it worked beautifully for three years (until it finally broke down). And my samsung was doing this from day 1. So I would strongly consider calling T-Mobile again, if you're still having the problem.

  • i think that the motorola v195 is a pretty nice phone. not fancy nothing special but a nice phone especially for the cost........ we always go camping and it gets great signal usually all my minutes are gone because people want to use mine..... once again its not fancy but its a nice phone

  • It can't recharge from the 2nd time. Faint..

  • I bought the unlocked Motorola V197 from their website and have had nothing but trouble and have made 100 phone calls to customer service because the phone doesn't SEND text messages consistently. I can receive 100% of time but it will only send a text 1 out of 50 times. I sent it back to Motorola and they sent it backed supposedly fixed but it isn't. Then I checked with my carrier-T-mobile and they said it was a phone problem. I'm still fighting with Motorola to fix it or give me a new one. I will NEVER do business with them again or buy a Motorola product!

  • I just ordered the v195 from T-Mobile To Go. They sent me a v195s is this one and the same? I'm almost ready to send it back as I've spent more than one full day trying to enter contacts in the phonebook. Then the phone froze on me and I had to keep powering off and on. Then, all of a sudden, it all cleared up and seems to be working. Of course I just got the phone so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

  • Maybe its just that I've had this phone for a year and three months, but it doesn't satisfy me. Its texting is prone to act funny and the battery life isn't great. I'm definitely upgrading.

  • This Phone May Not Be The Hottest Design But It Sure Does Have The Features! Bluetooth, Real Music Tones, Great Color, You Name It! T-Mobile Offers The Best Quality For A Perfect Price! This Is A Basic Pre-paid Phone With Some Boost! The Motorola V195 Is Offered On www.t-mobile.com For Only $39.99, An Unbelievable Price For A Bluetooth Device. This May Be A Temporary Price, And Is A Web-only Deal Which Means The Low Price Is Only Offered On The Site! I Am A Professional Cellular Telephone Reviser And Out Of What I've Seen This Is A Five Star For The Basics. Of Course There Are Many Other Phones That Have The Lastest Packed With Them, Such As Internet Browsing, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), And MP3 Players, But Those Phones Usually Are Over 100 Bucks! But Let Me Also Remind You That You Get What You Pay For. This Phone Here Gives You A Little More Than What You Pay For.

  • I have had the V195 for over a year. Still as good as the day I bought it. The V195s (My-faves interface) is another I have. By far the best non-camera high-end phone I have ever had next to other great Nokias

  • Hi! I want to use my v195 as a wireless modem. Where can I get the software for free? Is there any free software for managing picture and phone book? thanks a lot.

  • This phone is really great i have no problems with it and i have it for a year now.

  • Help! I just got this phone today from Amazon, and I can't hear any ringing. I can't even hear the sounds that come with the phone when I go into the menu and tell it to play them. The screen sure looks like it's playing something, but I can't hear it. As for the ringer, I can only make it vibrate or flash no matter what settings I use. My 18 year old daughter and I have been sitting here for over an hour trying everything either one of us could come up with, including Reading the Manual (horrors!). Am I missing something here? Or do I have a dud and need to return it?

  • please make them user friendly.some times it becomes combursome toget to know the functions. thanks & best regards

  • Hey, I am going to leave my last post, my v195 is still really great, I have been using it as much as ever in the last year and still no problems. although after I modded it as much as I could and got around motorolas pesky software I kind of quit. I have the same games and mp3s that I had a year ago. and i really don't play with the phone very much, just talk, text and use my bluetooth headset. my work has changed their policy about cameras so I will probabley upgrade to a more feature driven phone. but all in all this is the best phone i have ever had.

  • I just got a new unlocked Motorola V195. But found the following issues 1) The phone does not ring when it is charging. I made sure that the ring option is loud at all times. Even then it does not ring. I tried to keep ring and vibrate. ANd when charging and when calls come, the phone vibrates but does not ring. Can someone help? 2) The speaker phone also does not work when the phone is charging. Is this some stupid software glitch or is it problem with the phone.

  • V195 is T-Mobile specific, V191 is non-carrier specific, V197 from what I have seen is with Dobson. No real differences except the colors and design of the V197. The "M" light in the front is blue only. Hope this helps......

  • is there a way to get a different colored call light... like im talking bout the little M on the front cover can you download a different color for it like red or green or sumthing like that

  • For drivers, go to howardforums or modmymoto and look for "P2K Drivers." That, a few free programs, and a USB-mini cable will let you mod the V195 pretty extensively. The "live ticker" is a carrier-dependent thing. I have the T-Mobile V195 and it doesn't have that. You can put MP3s and .jpg images on the phone either by Bluetooth (send from computer or PDA) or cable (with Motorola Phone Tools or the various P2K programs, like P2KCommander). Pictures to be used as wallpaper should be 128x160 pixels. The only difference between the V195 and V197 is the color of the case and the software on the phone, and there is a V197 "monsterpack" available at modmymoto so you can "unbrand" your V195. I have done this myself. You can also flash different fonts and DRM icon sets (the little icons across the top of the screen) to this phone--it uses the same fonts and DRM sets as the L2/L6 phones. By the way, the V195 is available as a prepaid phone from T-Mobile for $44.95. After over a year, my "V197-ized" V195 still works perfectly.

  • Hi. Whats the difference between the motorola V197 and V195? I think both has the same features. Only the V197 is more better in design, more elegant.

  • It's Hot This Phone is really Cool! It is not necessary to have a camera when you and your friends Can Bluetooth each other

  • Hi all. Been using this phone for a little while now and i have to say that is a GREAT phone. Good battery life and the call quality is excellent. I am not concerned with a camera and all that stuff. All around a great piece of work from Motorola. Two thumbs up.

  • I would have bought this almost-great phone because I need a phone that does not have built in camera. But: [1] Its that forced-sneaky-annoying "Live-ticker" feature. You need to release a version of this same phone that has Live-ticker ((OFF)) by deafult. So that even when putting battery pack back in after taking it out a person would need to goto certain menu section to activate it only if they wanted too. [2] There must be menu option to disable Java in phone, like anyone whos security minded also does with thier PC web browser{its just as dangerous as ActiveX}. ------ Maybe they could swiftly release a firmware update then I would buy it. Id love to use it with Cingular prepaid service.

  • great design, cool, but too less features man

  • Help. Someone please email me where to get the DRIVER for the V195. I need software. [email protected]

  • does anyone know if the light on the front flashes when theres a text message? or only when its charging and receiving a call?

  • Anyone, I cant get my mp3s in the phone, where do I get the drivers for this phone? Do I really have to buy the "kit", if so that stinks. I already have the cable, I have many of them, because I also have a V3m, with a 1g micro, the v195 is my company phone. But I do know a little about hacking a phone because I have had verizon for 4 years. So there has to be a way, bitpim? Can I cut short mp3 samples and use less space for ring tones? Is it worth it if I do have to buy this driver disk?? Nevermind, most of you wouldn't know, thats why you want this phone. Which by the way is great for everything it is, too bad you can't, well I can't, use the same bluetooth ear piece for two separate phones at the same time, unless there is a way to trick the phones.... is there?

  • how do I put music on my phone. It is driving me nuts. please help me

  • I had this phone for a few mouths then the screen died on me..I am sick of Motorola phones..The battery life SUCKS..I only got 4 hours of talk time and 6 for stand by..The speaker phone Sucks even more..Yeah so what if you can use it closes it sill sucks..it is Vary quit..

  • Finally a nice and simple phones, great idea to provide it with bluetooth, hope to see it on the stores soon, since Im over 30 and believe is a little bit dumb to feature camera and Mp3 on my cell... I live that to my 12 years old daughter

  • Hey just checking back. ^_^ this is my third post and I would like to thank the wonderful person that can very obviously use a calculator, my bad I said hours instead of minutes...wow I think someone woke up on the wrong side of life just a little bit. Ok to reiterate the fact that I am still in love with my phone and that I still a using it very heavily( although i have played the games to death and am to lazy to put new ones on the phone) and still talking away like crazy. the only thing I have new is I recently broke down and bought a motorola h700 blue tooth head set and I am really happy with that aquistion as well. The battery is still as good as ever and I have for some reason or another dropped the about 12 times in the last three weeks (mostly because it has become pretty cool I have stick the phone in my hoodie and then forgot about it and then it would fall out). Except for two or three scratches no damage has been done. the rubber coating actually can withstand a 2'drop without showing damage or jarring the phone to much. although that is not to say it will not scratch. hhmmm I just guess I will give motorola another BRAVO and come back and give another update in a few months. unlike a couple of other posters I have not had a single problem with phone. ^_^

  • I got this phone about a month ago and love it. The battery life is great and it's got bluetooth. I payed around $35 for with a plan. O and the speaker qaility is great, I always get compliments on when Im playing a song or ringtone, It's loud and clear. Im telling you this is the best basic phone out there for the money buy it.

  • usb??

  • how do you put music on the phone??????

  • 7000+ hours a month... hmm... lets see... there are 24 hours a day... and on average 30 days a month... 24 x 30 = 720... that means... in a month, considering that you dont sleep and talk all night and day... you would only get 720-744 hrs a month... so.. to get 7000+ hrs... you would need at least... hmm.. almost 300 days of not sleeping and talking all day.. and probably 1 1/2 years if you consider sleeping a part of your daily routine which all of us do...

  • this phone is sweet i meen i have mp3 on ti sure it can only hold three songs but hey its worth it and the speaker is also great sound quality

  • This is the coolest phone eva my dogs!

  • Hi, this is to comment on the last reviewer and their opinion of this phone. I am sorry your phone had problems on it. but I use my phone exstensively(7,000+ hours of talking a month and quite a few hours playing fantasy warrior good and bad a week.) and I cannnot say that I have ever had any problems with it. not a single problem has come up...so maybe the problems every new item initially has is truely what is wrong? I don't know but mine is still working great and I am going on 3 months.

  • I don't recommend this phone to anybody. Although it looks good, and behaves well (for a while), there are technical problems in it that will surface over time. I spoke to the people at t-mobile and they had more then a few reports of problems. I will go back to Nokia phones.

  • I have had this phone for over a month now and I absolutely love. Thank you so very much Motorola for creating a camera less phone that is worth owning. My job considers it a felony to bring any type of camera to work and that includes cell phones that have had the cameras disabled. So to have a phone with Bluetooth that will let me completely customize it (mp3 ring tones, java apps, screensavers and wallpapers are limitless on the web), a battery that allows me to talk for hours on end (I recharge every 3 days)and a phone that does not look like the same razr that everyone and their brother owns( or the copy phones). But instead a stylish phone, that feels amazing and is very sturdywell all I can say is thank you Motorola. For trying to understand a very tiny demographic out there that needs a phone and not a camera.

  • And Fu...C my favorite Nokia brand for it is not putting a bluetooth in inexpensive phones! BLUETOOTH is the most imprtant feature to me, not the megapixel crap!

  • Finally! Inexpensive phone with a BLUETOOTH! And most importantly without a garbage camera! If only Motorola had change its stupid menu structure it would be the best phone on today's merket!

  • Perfect high entry level phone. Display is decent. Fonts are quite large, no camera(depends on personal needs), phenomenal battery life, great reception, good earpiece, bluetooth. One slight problem though: speakerphone is very "tin can" sounding.

  • I love it it is the best motorola phone....It is very pro and dependable.

  • Just recently got the v195.... I use my phone for work (to talk) and didn't need a camera. What I did need is tons and tons of talk time and standby time and something professional looking (understated stylish). I was previously using a v188 that I couldn't manage to kill the battery on if I -wanted- to. However, the v188 looked chintzy and cheap and I hated taking calls on it in front of clients. Anyway, the v195 is everything I wanted and more. I've been trying to run the battery down now for days. No effect. I want to fully drain and recharge it a couple times to keep it up to snuff but this thing JUST WONT DIE. The look is professional and stylish, it's solidly built and the keypad is easy to use and not too crowded. Texting is a breeze. The reception is perfect (the v188 was ok, but I got crappy reception in my block walled house, this one is full bars). Clarity is great, sound is great, speakerphone sounds great. Bluetooth isn't really importaint to me but it's nice that this phone has it (I think people running around with bluetooth headsets on their ears look like idiots, but I digress). Cant complain, this is probably the most practical phone on the market. It wont replace your ipod or your digital camera, but there isnt a single phone on the market that can :). Although I'd be first in line to buy a phone with 60 gigabytes of storage, a stylish form factor, and an 8.2 megapixel camera. Who wouldnt? Ncin

  • I also can not get the address book to sync. And my current sim addresses came over fine. My other comment is you can upload mp3s via Bluetooth and play them on the phone or assign them to ringtones. Overall I am very happy. Just need to figure out the addressbook issue and this phone would be a 10.

  • What happened to the Cosmic Blue version??? T-mobile seems to only have the Grey v195.

  • I had the v188 and that was replaced 3 times for being not loud on the ear piece and ramdom problems like reboots and freezes. This one does seem much much better. Hope I will not be mistake again since I need a cheapo quadband phone for traveling around the world. Battery on moto is excellent in my opinion. My samsung e365 only can go 2 days without a charge, so this one so far is on 3 days and i used it alot. Those USA M2M min average 3000/month

  • Purchased the V195 from T-Mobile on 6/10. SO far I like it but I can't seem to sync my calendar w/ my computer. THough my existing SIM address book came over fine.

  • i love this phone

  • Just heard it's going on sale June 5, 2006

  • Where is it I want one, and I want one now! It's about time they made a no nonsense phone. I only want to make and recieve calls. Could someone let me know when it's here?

  • Entry level phone w/ bluetooth: Yay Lack of Camera: Nay.

  • yeh! They should concentrate on low-end entry level phone only.

  • Quadband, Bluetooh, Mini USB, Push to talk, very good screen and a huge battery...who could't complain about this phone. No camera, no mp3 player, but good enough.

  • Clunky... for a basic clamshell, the dimensions are huge... and the weight... gosh... 100 g?

  • amazing so beautifull with all the nicest features i will certainly buy one :)

  • Nobody will tell you when it will be available. It has the FCC approval already, so I don't really know why it isn't available yet. However, I've been looking around and apparently it's to come out this summer. Acccording to PCMAG it will be available in June.

  • I really like this phone a lot. I would buy it if it was on the market. I wrote to Motorola today and they told me they don't know when it is going to be release as of yet. Everything says the second quarter which I think starts in May. Right!!!!!! I called my provider and they didn't know anything about it either. Does anyone have any "inside" information as to when it will be out there ready to buy and how much it will cost on a T-Mobile plan. Ron Harmon

  • WOW, a phone to be use as a PHONE ! What a new concept.Everything you need to make a phone call. WHEN ? WHERE ? Please Motorola let us know the way to buy this marvellous innovation in CELL phone technologie.... ;)

  • looks good if u don't have great expectations in a phone

  • It is tentative with T-Mobile USA. I cannot wait to see the price for this. It looks good

  • What a funny post. If you want a gadgety phone then don't even consider this. Case closed. For me, if I want a camera, I'll buy a real camera that can take a picture of a useful resolution. At least some phone manufacturers recognize there is a crowd looking for a phone that does what a phone should do, get you in contact with other people from almost anywhere. I am eagerly awaiting it's release in the US. Has it been released anywhere yet? I understand it was supposed to be out by the second quarter of 2006. It seems that hasn't happened. Does anybody know anything anout the release?

  • i am waiting for this mobile to be launched in chennai. I viewed all the reviews I am very much satisfied with the result. No camera, which is an advantage for me since I cannot use it in office premises. Bluetooth with 10 MB shared memory and excellent battery life. Flip type with mono display on the front cover. With 65k colors display screen and mp3 ring tone function is great. If it had FM then it will be the best in its type among all brands. Any way Motorola has did it a true IT personal mobile.

  • Hi,I need to buy a Flip-up phone that has no camera and has most advanced features. Is this the best one ?

  • Hey Mister Doctor...what's the main purpose of a cell ?? To talk dude,to talk... 10 hours of talk time - 500 of stand by...now that's good stuff. Only that the phone looks like...nothing. Doctor, check out the new XTEB-SAX 4289...it makes french fries ( on demand ) Let's be serious...

  • I like this phone. For security reasons in my job, I cannot carry a a camera phone but would like Bluetooth, longer battery life, and a clamshell. All cuurently available BT phones from major carriers have cameras and are unsuitable for security reasons.

  • the phone is good for people who are looking for low-end solutions. this phone serves its purpose being a reilable phone with the basic functions for today's standards in cell phones. namely the quadband support, RF won't be an issue, and the battery life is amazing.

  • this is year 2002...right?

  • Id like this phone more than a Razr V3.

  • It is sad that some people do not even know that their are companies that will permit the use of cell phones in some areas but prohibt cameras. This cell phone could be used in this case. Not a bad cell phone and has the basic needs.

  • after the v3i - moto what are you thinking?

  • why would anyone buy this phone with no camera? nokia makes phones with cameras for real cheap, not to mention the motorola problem with screens not working that you will inherit, i will never purchase another motorola phone after having the samsung t809(d900 i think)

  • this phone is nice

  • I think is the perfect mobile for me. I do not say anymore

  • Never go after the "long battery life". It is ONLY for standby mode. Once you start using it, the display, the sound, the speakers, everything starts taking its toll on the battery. I recently bought the small C139 lured by its long battery life, but this long life works best under the pillow only. However C139 is a very good stout little phone, I really like it, and this one may be good as well.

  • its agood basic phone with monsterous battery life

  • No more innovations after RAZR???? whats up!!

  • This Phone says push to talk. how can you tell is this kodiak push to talk

  • decent and cheap..

  • Nice phone. Manufacturers are turning up to medium range sober phones.
