  • i had this phone for few months. it was a nice phone with great specs, until it was dead. my advice to you all: -update to more stable firmware -be careful with trackball -dont install apps n themes from untrusted sources -dont install multiple security program my phone freezed at samsung logo screen so decided to sell it. idk why coz there was no problem whatsoever before. if u wanna buy this phone, experience the fun but dont expect too much. next time, buy a more user-friendly or popular phone. btw im still using samsung

  • i use this phone for 6 month, and im still satisfied of it. -big display -decent sounds -internet works fine(i've no wi-fi,just using operator conection) -gps software i use garmin xt and it works fine. -baterry 2-5 days,depends of usage(those who complain about baterry,try to charge it turned off,it last longer).   • Just to clear some minds, i've installed the new firmware following osama's instructions and it works fine. i've tried the wifi fw first but my phone is not wifi so i guess that you need both firmware and wifi hardware on your phone (i550w) otherwhise it won't work! so i'm using i550XXHH1 in Portuguese and i just had to set my www, wap and mms settings for my operator. i can advise some gps softwares like navigon, garmin xt or ndrive, they work just fine with internal gps receiver. thankz ;D

  • hey its happening to mine as well, there might be 2 possibilities. one is that its just dirt like someone else mentioned and ur lucky, the other is that one of the rollers that actually gets and transfers the trackball action is busted. I tried to clean mine and found that out so im praying that there are replacement trackballs.

  • man, samsung's support for this set was rubbish, so i wont be surprised that they told you so. find an external maintenance center, i think there are alot of chinese parts for this mobile. i myself bought a chinese battery for mine, lol it was worst than the original one.

  • i have this phone for a year and a half now... did not get any problems so far, it said on its specs it can only handle 4gb memory card but i have an 8gb memory! i dunno whats wrong with your battery life but mine can last for 2-4 days! depending on the usage and i text and listen to music alot... had a good features with its symbian OS you can install "almost" all sis and jar programs... has a great camera and nice wide screen. the only thing that "sucks" in this phone is the trackball and Damn! that trackball sucks! overall this phone is good but not that great... cheers!

  • after one year and few months of buying this set here's what i concluded: powerful full option set, great display, great video and audio qualities... unfortunately, u don't have time to enjoy all these options (battery life is worst of the worst). trackball also suck, but u can manage. i do regret buying this set all because of the battery, yet i've learnt what to buy in the future. comparing to many sets this one opened video files that no other set nokia, sony ericsson, HTC could open. anyways it was a good experience like i said to know what to buy in the future.

  • 1.Type this for firmware: *#1546792*# 2.The only way I have managed to extend battery life for 2 days is to reduce brighteness on minimum,to instal garmin 4.10.80(NO GARMIN 5!),to often use TaskMan (options>more>close all apps),reduce usage of gprs and wifi.And of course reduce camera usage.

  • By the way... before formating memory card save all your important data on pc.Because formating card is actually erassing all on it. Once again:find in menu Memory>press options>format memory card.

  • Find in phone menu "Memory" or "Memory Card" then open it.Then press "options".In the following list choose "format memory card" and that is all. I hope it was helpfull.

  • my samsung i550w just work fine.battery life could last 4-5 days of average use. maybe you have some running application in the background if that so it will drain the battery fast.

  • over all this is a good phone..wifi,gps,3.5mm audio jack,3.2mp cam with led,easy email set up,can upload video on youtube directly from the phone. i've been using this phone for quite sometime now. the only downside really is the trackball navigation when browsing a web page but it has a mini map that activate when pressing the 8 keypad.

  • The best phone i ever used both professionally and private. The body is very robust...in the one year i've owned it, it has fallen so many times that if the scratches mean problems nothing would work today! ...And it still works like the first day i bought it! The SW is nokia's S60v3 which means perfect functionality and interface for professional use (agenda, events, contacts, etc.. all in "today" screen). The integrated themes are not the best but quicky you get loads of option from the Net. The pictures are excelent for a 3,2Mp camera, they are so good i stopped carrying my Nikon when i take my kids to the playard. The Samsung Studio works even better than nokias solution, something that suprised me ALOT!!! In one, a GOOD solution for an everyday mobile solution. I just lack the wifi that was only released in the second version (i550w).

  • Look here Apolo is a program for flasing your phone You need to instal apolo v4.1.21, and drivers before you do anything Firmware is in BIN and IMG files All you need is on the internet,you just need to look and reed

  • The latest version of firmware is i550xxhh1 All you need is here: Firmware(i550PMHE3)(with wifi) Firmware(i550XXHH1)(without wifi) DRIVERS Steps to update Firmware 1. download the apollo and also the s60 download drivers, and of course the firmware. 2. off the phone, and press and hold the keys 7 and * and the on button, all 3 keys together. 3. When the phone shows "Modem Download", connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install the phone driver, point it to the drivers that you have downloaded. 4. Off the phone again, if you can't power it off, just unplug the battery. 5. press and hold the keys 1 and 4 and the on button, all 3 keys together. 6. when there are 3 lines of words in the phone, connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install some other drivers, point it to the downloaded files again. 7. verify that you have the two drivers installed in the Control Panel. 8. REBOOT PC! 9. Run the apollo software, and on the phone while pressing key 4 and 7, all 3 keys together, when the phone shows "Modem Download", make sure "SMD" is unchecked, and just press "All Download", (you will need to select the firmware files downloaded) 10. about 4 minutes later, check the firmware version using *#1234# and use the code 0000000. Just follow the instructions!!! THE PHONE IS RALLY GOOD! WITH GOOD TASK MANAGER BATERI LAST FOR 3-4 DAYS

  • Based on my experience of using i550w for 8 months i conclude that : 1. The batt life is not that bad, depends on ur usage. Normal use of texting, short voice call, music/radio, the batt could last about 2-3 days. But when i use wifi or browse the internet using 3g connection the batt drains out very quickly. 2. Trackball navigation is love it or hate it situation. After frequent use i have nothing to complain. Although sometimes i thought this fone would be better using regular d-pad. 3. I luv the screen size, the quality is typical samsung handset, great indoor, poor outdoor. 4. The camera quality is above average for a non camera-centric fone. 5. I admire the sonic exp. The sound is very crisp n clear! Esp if u have a high quality headset thx to its 3.5mm audio port. Overall, this fone is great, based on its price/performance. If u r looking for a perfect fone, i guess u'll never find one because it eventually depends on ur personal taste n ur need.

  • Okay had this fone for about a week now. Here is what i think. 1) Love the big screen, i dont think there is any other 2,6 inch candy bar out there, and when watching you tube u can really see the difference over a 2,4. HOWEVER, the sunlight legibility is absolutely abysmal!! So great screen, INDOORS ONLY! 2) The track ball - very love or hate. I love it. Managed to customize the sensitivity to suit me. And its like a poor man's blackberry, he he. 3) Keypad is awesome, love it, love it, love it! The keys are large and soft and make typing a joy. 4) Fast interface, its super quick. My last fone was the disastrous Sony Ericsson G900, so its nice to finally be moving again, speed wise. 5) Camera - had some settings missing - no two-stage button and no separate macro mode. This made me very concerned because i often take pictures of written stuff like magazine articles and news articles, business cards etc. Thats my main use for mobile fone cam. So i need that to be in focus, and what a pleasant surprise, it focuses on them PERFECTLY! No need for separate macro, i think it senses it on its own. 6)Battery - the phone's biggest weakness - awful - the worst i ever experienced. 7) FM Radio is attrocious and might as well not be there - they should take lessons from Sony Ericsson on how to implement FM radio into mobile phones. Signal and sound is weak on the Samsung. 8)No notifications LED - they could have used the trackball lighting for that - would have been cool. 9)Music player is rather insipid. 10)Internet is on par with the others, but a treat on the larger than average screen. Wifi is fast and strong, but POWER HUNGRY! But on balance i give this phone the thumbs up - for the price i paid, you could hardly do better (and you could do a lot worse). The only other low cost wifi option is Nokia e51 - and no, we wont be going there.

  • Well imo, its a great phone for the price. Really similar to nokia n95 excluding the trackball which aint so easy at first, but u'll get used to it.. GPS works really good with Garmin Mobile XT, and with lil tweaks, you can install Nokia software init ;)

  • finally sell it after using it for 5 months... - sound quality thru headset is SUPERB.. (using custom earphone of course. the standard supplied earphone sucks). way better than my new Nokia 5130 XM - feature is superb.. GPS, WiFi, you name it - battery life is decent.. 2 days (48 hours) of standby can be achieved easily but... all that doesn't count as the TRACKBALL SUCKS BIG TIME !!! i got SOOOO IRRITATED the way the trackball behaves.. it's not the trackball faulty.. but i guess the implementation of such trackball for this phone is just not as comfortable as expected. - scrolling thru phonebook - takes long time. you have to type several letter first. - scrolling thru the menu - often gets wrong direction. it goes left when we want to go down. you have to control the trackball precisely. - browsing the internet - sucks.. always have to use 'map' mode - operating ovi maps or garmin - even more difficult to browse the map.. (i'd say.. almost inoperable)

  • I have used this mobile phone for almost 1 year. Sceen clarity is very good. No problem with Symbian OS, you can install any software you usually used in Nokia phone. GPS is working well. No problem with Internet/WIFI/browser. Camera and video are amazing. Batery life is 2 days (with normal operation). Firmware self-upgrade process is very easy and available in internet. Everything is almost perfect. But, one thing i hate from this phone. The main problem is track ball. The response is getting worse and worse after 1 year. I don't know why Samsung put this suck thing on this mobile. If you have more money, don't buy this phone. the track ball will bother you for sure. Two thumbs for Samsung who created the feature as perfect as possible, but two middle finger for putting damn bad track ball on it.

  • You cannot watch desktop youtube but you can watch mobile version of youtube.....Battery depends upon the usage.....if u are a music lover then battery will last about 15 hours of continuos playback..... GPRS lasts about 5-6 hours..... On minimum usage like little music, calling, messaging then it can last about 2-3 days without any problem.

  • waleed, I was under the same impression until I tried a simple bettery trick that is recommended for notebooks after a BIOS flash: just drain the battery in standby until the phone shuts itself off completely then recharge fully before you use it again. You should then get 2 days worth of battery with 'normal' use. Mine lasts approx. 48 hours and still shows 2 bars in the display (1 hour talk time, 20 mins WiFi, 10 mins GPS per day).

  • Actually for symbian phone u a can use pc to install the jad,jar or sis file direct to the phone u also can just copy the file u want to install to the symbian phone and use file manager to locate it and install it in ur phone.most of the symbian phone is always like that.very easy. u can try it.

It allows installation of jar files via GPRS only by accessing the jad files first. Can anybody confirm that jar files can be installed from PC (without the need of GPRS) in i550.

  • My firmware was flashed from Samsung service center in Malaysia. Hopefully they did not mess with different .img and .bin together. Jessi, for what i know for finnish language, the firware has to br I550CPnnn instead of I550XXnnn, I dont know the last firmware revision that came out...for Sweden has to be XB (Denmark, Norway, Sweden).   • Hi Bayu, I have used this phone for 4 months and this forum helps me much in optimizing it. I upgraded the firmware to i550MPHE3 2 weeks after I bought it and it is very stable. For me this phone is best value for money. My battery consumption is 3-5 days in my normal usage. I use garmin mobile xt (you can go to garmin website and download for free). Make sure you install garmin version 5.00.00 (not 5.00.10 or 5.10.20) so that you can save the battery life. Thanks

  • Firmware(i550PMHE3)(with wifi) Firmware(i550XXHH1)(without wifi) DRIVERS Steps to update Firmware 1. download the apollo and also the s60 download drivers, and of course the firmware. 2. off the phone, and press and hold the keys 7 and * and the on button, all 3 keys together. 3. When the phone shows "Modem Download", connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install the phone driver, point it to the drivers that you have downloaded. 4. Off the phone again, if you can't power it off, just unplug the battery. 5. press and hold the keys 1 and 4 and the on button, all 3 keys together. 6. when there are 3 lines of words in the phone, connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install some other drivers, point it to the downloaded files again. 7. verify that you have the two drivers installed in the Control Panel. 8. REBOOT PC! 9. Run the apollo software, and on the phone while pressing key 4 and 7, all 3 keys together, when the phone shows "Modem Download", make sure "SMD" is unchecked, and just press "All Download", (you will need to select the firmware files downloaded) 10. about 4 minutes later, check the firmware version using *#1234# and use the code 0000000.

  • I have the same experience as Chaossalto. Uninstalling garmin mobile XT solved battery problem. It seems there is some resident installed and running in 5.0.10 and 5.0.20 version. I have noticed it when upgrading to the latest version, installer said that it must close some applications running even if the GMobile XT was switched off and phone restarted. so i uninstalled the GMobile XT and battery lasts so looong :)

  • I am using i550MPHE3 firmware and it is very stable. Since I install Garmin Mobile XT, the battery consumption becomes very high, it can survive only for 20 hours. Unchecking the integrated GPS on the system setting can not solve this battery consumption. A week ago, I removed the garmin mobile xt from my i550w (and format the memory card), and it surprised me. The battery consumption is getting better, it survives up to 5 days for my daily usage (sms, phone call and internet-3.5G). My temporary conclusion: Garmin mobile xt is high battery consumed software eventhough it is not activated.

  • I cannot say what is wrong with your phone if the battery still lacks capacity. Maybe you have programs in background processing.. You should search for instant messaging software, one that comes in my mind is fring. Make sure you get the right os version. You can also search in the internet security manager software that allows you to install any software despite is the software signed or not.

  • If you are in Gulf go to Samsung Service center and ask for firmware update.....version is i550JPHH2 I searched this firmware on the internet but i did not get any link.......

  • Hi Jammer Unchecking the integrated GPS did not help much. Battery life is still low. I had another query. Can we load the conversation software onto the phone. It comes preloaded on Nokia S60 phones.I tried but it said certificate error. Or do we have an alternate software?

  • update.. my i550w has been on standby for 68 hours now (almost 3 full days) and the battery bar is 4 (out of 7) test condition : - after *#7370 reset, no apps installed - GSM only (3G switched off) - integrated GPS switched off - few minutes call and few sms each day - without connecting to the internet after this, i think i'll add internet connection test (via GPRS and wifi) and see how long the battery lasts.

  • You can record your calls using third party software (e.g. what comes that wifi and battery consumption, I cannot say if there is any third party software that allows you to tweak the signal strength so the child would take less power. And remember that if you find a way to decrease the wifi chip power, it'll affect the signal sensitiveness also. Jammer

  • I meant that you should un-check the integrated gps in settings where you can select integrated, bluetooth gps or assisted gps. I can't say for sure that the gps-chip is active despite if there are any software utilizing it or not, but I noticed that disabling it completely will increase battery life significantly. If I need the gps, I simply activate the integrated method in system settings. Hope I made myself clear. -Jammer

  • I found out that if I disable the integrated gps, battery life increases dramatically. Earlier I was struggling also with poor battery life, but if I don't need gps, I don't check it in the settings. Worth to try. -Jammer

  • Totally Vanished( i550) from Qatar...the Main dealer sales staff tells you that it was a limited edition model ???? what does it mean..?? so good a model that only few can have the privlage to own it. ?? is it good business sense...i dont think so.the real story is diffrent.   • dear ahmed, did u buy the i550w in panda? the promotional item in there brochure..someone told me it's made in china.. i bought mine under the warranty of axiom and it cost around 800 riyals.. overall performance is good ,i didn't find any problem with the wifi and other things on it.

  • For GPS, update the firmware to speed up initial lock process. For WIFI, Go to Settings>Connection>Access Point>Options>New Access Point> (Define new Access Point at least there are 3 or 4 Access Point) THEN Go to Web>Option>Settings>General>Access Point>User Defined>

  • Hi, The first usage of the GPS module usually needs quite long time to initiate. To initialize the GPS module just go somwhere outside start the internal GPS Data application, choose Position and wait... Usually the first time the GPS is used takes around 30 min(it can be more or less). After this first initialization, the GPS module will initialize faster ~1-2 min (or less) depending on the usage. I solved the first initialization issue with leaving the Phone in the car having the GPS Data application running...and it worked...

  • Only Left selection key, Right selection key and GPS key can be remapped.

  • Go to Setting>Connection>Access Point> click Your define acess point> then highlight your Connection name>click Options>Click Advanced settings>then set the IP adress settings.

When my office Wireless Lan (3com router) internet connection was in unsecure mode , i could easily connect to the internet, view websites,Download, read e-mails etc ..., but since i changed the security mode to WPA/WP2 ...I am not able to connect at all. I have access point also... I have input the pre-shared key also but but it does not help. The asteriks which appear in the key box does not change. Though when i access a unsecure network it is ok. I restored to factory setting and tried again but it is the same problem....Please somebody advise me.. Please i really nees help here.Thankx in Advance.

  • First go to menu then "settings" and then enter "phone" Then go to "network" settings If u want both 3g and GSM then select "Dual Mode" or if u want only 3g then select UMTS or only edge or gprs then select GSM YZour problem will be solved

I surf on my default s60 browser and it used to work very well but now it doesnt open any pages and it shows all page codes (jibrish + html code), dont know whats wrong with it.   • guys, when using apollo, you need to choose MODEM CODE file, which would have '.bin' extension (PHONE_i550PMHE3.bin). For the PDA IMAGE, it would be a '.img' (PDA_i550PMHE3.IMG). Once you have followed the instructions posted previously for driver installations (as preparation to flash your phone), started the Apollo application with your phone plugged on your pc, and have clicked on the 'All Download' button on Apollo, the status for MODEDM Status will display the process going on for the installation of your .bin file... now the tricky part is, once it's finished, it will pause for a couple of seconds. you are not supposed to unplugged your phone from your pc. In a moment, installation of .img (PDA image) will occur. Once this is done, that's the only time we can unplug it from the pc. By the way, the features mentioned on the previous instruction on installing this firmware is indeed there... even the phone start up has changed, cool interface!

  • This firmware is not locked for any particular carrier, you can use it with any carrier but i am not sure if it would be available for download at the samsung service centre itself as they themselves get to download the firmware based on the region where they are located.

When i updated my firmware thru service centre, i got this firmware. He told me that there will be a samsung site for firmware update soon, like nokia. It is currently in test phase.

  • This is not at all risky....... I have updated my phone with ease man..... When u connect to the internet it asks for access points When the menu of access points is shown there will be an extra option naming "Search for WLAN" Go ahead and update your phone.

  • This is the latest firmware i550PMHE3 I have installed it manually Its easy and steps are below 1. download the apollo and also the s60 download drivers, and of course the firmware. 2. off the phone, and press and hold the keys 7 and * and the on button, all 3 keys together. 3. When the phone shows "Modem Download", connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install the phone driver, point it to the drivers that you have downloaded. 4. Off the phone again, if you can't power it off, just unplug the battery. 5. press and hold the keys 1 and 4 and the on button, all 3 keys together. 6. when there are 3 lines of words in the phone, connect the USB port to PC, it should automatically prompt you to install some other drivers, point it to the downloaded files again. 7. verify that you have the two drivers installed in the Control Panel. 8. REBOOT PC! 9. Run the apollo software, and on the phone while pressing key 4 and 7, all 3 keys together, when the phone shows "Modem Download", make sure "SMD" is unchecked, and just press "All Download", (you will need to select the firmware files downloaded) 10. about 4 minutes later, check the firmware version using *#7370# and use the code 0000000. It can be different for other country. To download data u must ensure that gprs connection already set and work fine, test by browsing.

  • Bought this phone 4 months ago. Had problem from the first day with Sim card compatibility and Samsung Korea had to get involved to find problem. Issue solved by applying software update. Now after 4 months of use, the trackball keeps missing places which makes it difficult to use. Also, everyone i talk to says they cannot hear me well. Therefore I switch to "Whisper" mode every time. Battery life is below average. GPS is fine and clear, except that you have to buy the software after the trial version is finished. Everything else is super. You might need to get used to the small keypad at first but its sweet after that.

My sincere apologies for picking your comment right away. it was too rush for me to take on the attack mode immediately. with regards to your concern on the firmware availability over the net, i suspect samsung company does not readily make it obtainable for the reason that they dont want to void any possible warranty by indiscriminately switching from one firmware to another. it is available and readily offered in its certified samsung service centers. there, before downloading the latest firmware, you'll get your phone assessed too. this by which is another prudent and commendable customer service gesture from samsung. my apologies for picking you right away. anyhow, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and observation.   • I did not come here to argue with anybody else, nor did I say I hate samsung. What I didnt like is 1 week after I purchased this phone, i found out that they (samsung) has no online SW upgrading. I cannot admit that i550w's SW is perfect. It still needs improvement. If ever samsung releases upgrade, you have to go to their service center. Unlike some other phone where you can do-it-yourself anywhere, anytime as long as you have PC with internet connection. My brother's samsung D880 needs to be updated due to crashes. He brought it to samsung svc center. He was surprised when they charged him 1,000 bucks because its 1-year warranty was lapsed. Anyway, this phone is already with me (my first samsung phone) so i have to take care of it. You might be a help to me, do you know where to download the latest firmware for DX region? I've read that with this firmware, the GPS key is remappable & more improvements. Thank you in advance. CHEERS!

  • POOR SUPPORT for samsung phones? come on guys! the comment on samsung's "poor support" for its firmwares are a bit out of place. perhaps, other phome manufacturers may have a handful of available updates on their lines of phones may be because their firmwares are out of date. thus, the explanation of available firmware updates. samsung may presently have no immediate available update for the reason that their in-phone firmwares are up-to-date. this is the reason why. samsung rules. this noise is a slight hiccup for this phone compared crashing applications and softwaress in some phones out there.

  • it will actually GIVE YOU the altitude and longitude without any additional applications and thats through clicking GPS data icon in tools folder , but ofcourse you gotta be in an open area...;) really good phone , recommend it! Good Luck

( i made that review myself btw ) the Samsung i550W is a very nice phone, recommended by me, for all who don't like the battery, adjust your display brightness in a moderate way! DO NOT SET DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS TO MAX >> this will make your battery life very short, also try making the dim time shorter , switch off bluetooth when not in used...,etc. GOOD LUCK, i550 > CHEAP , PACKED and RECOMMENDED !

  • been using this phone for over 3 months now, and i can get enough of this phone. i discover new things every day. so far, i have not expereince any problems with my unit. it has been so reliable and sturdy. battery life is not bad considering the lighting of the 2.6" screen. i normally used it up to 4 days normal use. i never regretted buying this unit over the SE p1i.

  • Already doing that & keeping bluetooth off when not needed but still, the battery level is at the lowest bar after 24h with minimal use (30 mins. talk time per day, no Wi-fi use, 1 hr bluetooth on)...

  • If u got the problem with CERTIFICATE ERROR, try this trick : Before u installed the application, set the date of ur phone to 2007,2006,etc. Then installed ur application. After installed finish, restart ur phone. It work for me, cheers!

  • This is the case with all GPS-supported software / applications I've tested on the i550 so far. I have found a trick that somewhat works for me: Zoom out from where the cursor is, move the cursor to the intended position & zoom back in. I would assume the trackball sensitivity would be improved with a firmware upgrade, whenever Samsung get around to releasing one. Overall this is a great phone, if only the battery would last more than one day on a single charge - and that is with minimal phone use!

  • In my experience, Nimbuzz Java version is more cheaper(for GPRS/3G data usage) than symbian version. This is like opera mobile(symbian) and opera mini(java).

In your case it is very accurate and routable Midle East map v.3 or v.4, it depends on what you can get for free, if you, like me for exaple, do not want to spend money on software:) Also Garmin have all World Basic map (v.4 for now), and a fantastic water ways charts of all oceans and seas.   • hey vishal the i550w is a good option. and for the price its coming its just amazing. just look at the n78 thats coming out at 500dollars!! the i550w has all features except the fm transmitter which isnt that good anyway. if you dont mind losing out on the gps you could also look at the nokia e51. one of the most sensible phones i have seen in recent years.. its extremely fast and does all chores perfectly.. the wifi is also very good. the gprs and edge are both class 32 which is nice to see in this price range..

  • i am sorry to say but it sounds like a hardware problem. one of the ic in the phone has weakened. its quite rare but it happens to people who use the phone continously say using the phone 6hrs non-stop 7days a week. it burns out. i hope you are under warranty..

  • Mc Ranz, Your distorted ring tone sounds like a faulty speaker. Is it possible that you have been playing your ringtone or music or videos at full volume? If so, you might find that you have damaged the speaker and therefore will need to return it to Samsung to have it replaced. When you return it, get them to look at the red line on your screen as that definitely sounds faulty. In my experience, Samsung LCD's are much brighter than their Nokia counterparts and therefore show every little blemish. As for where to download games have a look through some of my previous posts and you'll find a link to a website where I have uploaded a number to a file sharing website.

  • ive been using this phone for two weeks, and the restart problem really occurred. It usually happen when i run an application, and the backlight is turned off due to the limit which i set it for 10 second in the setting, then suddenly the phone will restart after that. so, ive countered this problem by setting the backlight for longer time (10 minutes). but the longer backlight is on, the faster the battery drain. so to turn off the backlight, i lock the keypad.

  • Jovan: Depends what you what to do with the phone. If you need a phone that great for email and sms on the move, then I'd go for the i780 or better yet wait for the blackberry 9000 bold which promises to be the HOTTEST phone on the market. If on the other hand you want a phone with features similar to the N95 with the high price tag, then the i550W is a good choice. Questions you should be asking include what operating system(MS or Symbian), what apps (Office, Comms, Games), what features (Camera Megapixels, Music Player, Browser). For me the first thing I look for is WLAN and HSDPA coz I want high speed access. I prefer Symbian coz there's more support and more apps and games. I don't use the camera a great deal but I do want at least 2 megapixels which gives 1600x1200 photos. I use the music player and internet browser all the time so these are really important. But overall I want to keep my costs down so I can keep buying new models on a regular basis coz I love playing with new gadgets. You can use the phone finder on this website to help narrow the models. One good tip if you dont know what frequencies are used in your country is to use the network coverage tool on this website. In Australia, Telstra uses 850Mhz and Vodafone uses 2100Mhz. Use the link below to find the right frequency:

  • Jovan: If you use Outlook 2003 or 2007 you are going to LOVE this phone!!! This sync software in Samsung PC Suite is one of the phones best features. It's easy and simply to use and it runs on Vista and XP. You can sync Calendar, Tasks, Contacts and Notes. And if you want to go to the trouble to set it up even your inbox. If your office uses Exchange you can download a program called RoadSync - see my earlier posts for details.

  • Majid Bhai: This phone records .MP4 video in two sizes. The default is 352x288 and the other is 176x144. You'll need to buy a 2GB MicroSD card though because the file sizes can be quite large and the basic phone only comes with about 150MB of memory. For playback, you can use the default player in the Samsung PC Suite software that comes with the phone or better yet try out the free VideoLAN VLC player.

  • NN: Sounds like a faulty USB cable to me, but if not you might find it quicker to do a reinstall of the Samsung PC Suite software. If that still fails, then test the installation on another pc with a different cable to see if it works. If it doesn't, then you know it's a phone problem. If it does, then you know its a problem with Windows - in that case its probably quicker to reinstall your Windows PC than trying to figure out where the problem lies.

  • Please Help!! i bought this phone i550 after reading all the great feautures it had to offer by trading in my faithful old W660i SE and sadly enough I am beginning to regret for one main reason which surprised me. The phone just went out and I got late to office since I depended on it for my Alarm. The first thing I did was to charge the phone fully and did not download any software or anything like that. To start with I guess this is a really bad experience for anyone, I mean with all the big Ads about its feature(s).

  • Here's an interesting tip - If you need a really long battery life and you have done all those things I suggested in my last post, then try switching from 3G UMTS mode to 2G GSM mode. I am told that you'll get 3x the talktime. Oh and by the way, don't forget my tip about downloading the Opera Mobile (Not Opera Mini) browser. It will improve the trackball scrolling problems significantly.

  • Guys - I am seeing heaps of people asking about the battery life on these phones. They use a 1200mAh battery on a phone with a 2.6" screen. If you want a phone that will give you 3-4 days battery life, buy an old 2G GSM basic Nokia phone. But if you want the sophisticated features that this phone offers then here are some tips. First, Samsung's default screen brightness is way more than is needed, so turn it right down. Second, change your display settings to a 10 sec backlight and 5 second dim. Third, make sure there are no apps running in background when you aren't using them. Fourth, turn off your Bluetooth when you aren't using the phone. Fifth, phone batteries have a memory so always fully charge and then fully discharge before recharging. This is called battery cycling. If your battery seems to have problems, try cycling your battery three to four times and see if the performance improves. High tech devices like these need their batteries replaced every 12 months, so if you use yours a lot, buy a another battery. Sixth, when connecting to the internet, try to use a high speed WLAN connection in preference to the 3G HSDPA facilities - I was told the other day that surfing using the WLAN will drain half as much power as surfing using the 3G HSDPA connection - don't know if that's true. Seventh, if you are listening to music then use the headphones provided in preference to the loudspeaker - big savings here. Eighth, when downloading new apps to your phone, try to download them to your pc first and then Bluetooth or USB them to your phone - you�d be amazed how much power you�ll save here.

  • Mai - I've been thinking about your screensaver issue. The standard phone doesn't come with a screensaver preinstalled, so I can only assume that if you have one installed, either you or someone who had access to the phone has installed either a .jar or .sis or .sisx screensaver on the phone. Have you carefully looked through the installed files in application manager to see if there is a file which is either labelled as a screensaver or labelled as something else which you don�t recognise? Another way to approach this might be to delete all the apps in application manager and then reset the phone to factory defaults using the 00000000 pin. If you're worried about loosing your apps, then see if they are available on handango.com or nokia mosh before you delete them. Let me know if this solves the problem. If it doesn�t, you may have to find a good file manager which can look into the data cabinets which are not viewable in the standard Symbian file manager.

  • to TEA7... you can set your WLAN off.. go to setting, connection, WLAN... then set it to "never". Just open it if you need the WLAN. it will surely boost your battery... do you know how to change the screensaver?

  • Great news everyone, I have just found a solution to the trackball problem I mentioned in my last post. To recap, it is extremely difficult to use the trackball with the built-in browser no matter what the sensitivity level is adjusted to. Well I am pleased to report that a small improvement can be found by loading the free Opera Mini 4 browser available from www.opera.com. However, the really exciting news is that by purchasing the Opera 8.65 for S60 3.x Ver:8.65 browser a significant improvement can be found. This changes my rating for this product dramatically from average to highly recommended. In my opinion, if you dont require WCDMA connectivity (ie. your carrier uses UMTS) then this phone is equally as good as the Nokia N95 and in many ways a great deal better. In my next post I hope to be able to inform you of an upcoming release of Samsung PC Studio for Windows Vista (at present it's only available for Windows 2000 and Windows XP) and I may even be able to give you a link as to where to download it.   • I think the reviewer got it right when he said that this phone will be a classic, however there are two big problems with it that are such a disappointment my review can only award an average rating. The first of these is the trackball mouse which is almost impossible to control no matter what the sensitivity setting. This is especially evident when using the built-in browser. I found it extremely difficult to navigate and in the end gave up. The second problem is that the phone supports GSM and UMTS but not WCDMA technology. This severely limits the phones ability to take advantage of the built-in HSDPA technology. In Australia, Telstra our leading carrier (similar to AT&T in the USA) runs WCDMA. This phone will not run on the Telstra NextG network, but will function on the Telstra GSM network. Trouble is if your are buying a phone like this you want to be able to use it on all networks. Other than that, if you are currently connected to a UMTS carrier and don't plan on surfing the internet on your phone, its simple design, long battery life, large clear screen with good colour rendition are all a blessing. Oh, there is one other thing which needs improvement and it may be available through an upgrade, but at this stage I don't know, and that is that the Adobe Flash Player 2.0 which is provided with the phone appears to have no way of being updated. If anyone knows of a work-around please let me know.

  • To Sjohz... I got my i550 a week ago and i dont have any problem with this phone. with the trackball, you simply have to adjust the sensitivity. For GPS, go to the nearest samsung center for them to adjust/check whatever problem your i550 have. But you know what my friend...if your not used to a smartphone i think its better for you to ask others opinion first. Before buying something better think twice... as far as i know... this smartphone is great!

  • Have been using it for more than a week. At first, was wondering how to use the GPS. But currently no issue at all. Had installed Garmin Mobile XT 4.10.60 with Malsing v2.23 Gold map. Just need to be patient when you start the GPS application (Garmin) or activating GPS data. Make sure you are outdoor or in-car. It will take about 2-3 minutes to capture the satellite. Do not compare with N6110 navigator cause it is much more faster. I have been using N6110 navigator previously and traded for i550w because of the screen size and definitely the price. Just don't understand why some user was facing phone restart problem which i don't till now :) The phone performance was great even with 4gb micro sd which i was using. I have even tried fully utilizing the micro sd and it is still fine. This phone is definitely worth for what you are paying for.

  • Hi, all. This unit is till very new, not many GPS maps or navi software can be supported as it runs on the Symbian OS... The only software that can support it's Google Maps. Pratically it can't navigate, it only shows u yr exact location...and it utilize yr 3G's by downloading at least 75kb of data - which means u're paying everytime u use this :( Unlike the PDA / palm phones which re using Windows Mobile Version, softwares like Garmin Mobile XT, Map King 10 can be installed at a go... Samsung should have it's own GPS software just like the Nokia...ubfortunately they haven't... I just bought this phone less than a week...still wondering how to activate the GPS naviatigation..

I have a thought that there might be something running in the background. As expected, the answer is YES!! The GPS DATA was running on the background without my knowlegde.   • Hi guys. I know have had this phone for 1 month and i absolutely love it!! In the past year and a half i have had nokia n73 , nokia n95, samsung u700, nokia n82. This is by far my most favourute phone. Awesome design and ergonomics great features. The n95 was a brick, the n82 nice phone really liked but i hated the design. Simply hated the u700 touch sensitive keys, but the mp3 player was brilliant. To me this is the perfect phone for my needs. Stability issues, the phone only restarted on me 3 times in the month that i had it and thats because i was running too many applications in one time. I use a 6 gig memory card which works fine .Awesome smart phone.

  • I bought the wireless version SGH-I550W. I have installed Garmin Mobile XT and it works very well. If there is a negative it is that the trackball does not allow fast browsing of the maps but everything else is first class. The phone searches and finds the Internal GPS (after one has activated this in the Garmin software). The screen is bright and clear. I have owned a number of s60 phones - the last was the Nokia E65 which had a mind of its own at times. The I550W is far more stable and in ten hours of running through programmes and settings it has behaved very well. It would be great if Samsung (or Garmin) could allow the number keys of say 2,4,6,8 to be used to browse the map in the absence of the trackball moving at speed. I bought this phone as my important requirements were GPS and WiFi and there are not many phones which fit this category. The price is very good for the features it offers. In Garmin mode the settings allow for Car/Motorcycle, others and Pedestrian so one can pick the mode one wants and use that. I tried all types and it never missed a beat. Most of the other features are very similar to the Nokia setup which is adequte for me. The software bundled with the phone on CD was easy to install and quickly Sync'd all my calendar, notes and contacts with MS Outlook. All in all a very good phone for the price.

  • Finally, I've managed to bought this phone after painstaking experience.. :( - SAMSUNG i550w (with WiFi) I am from Malaysia and I've bought this phone somewhere in Kuala Lumpur with the price of RM1550 (with 4GB memory card). Trust me, after 2 days using it.. I have no restart problem at all!! The only one major frustation for me of having this phone is it's screen clarity!! I am so excited about its big screen but only to find out that the resolution is a mediocre, >:< I am based on the display on my k800i. For the same picture, it is so obvious that i550w lacks of clarity, sharpness, contrast and very less saturated. Anyway, I think for those who did not compare.. the screen display is just nice. You won't find it's bad unless you compare it with k800i. That's all for now. Thank you.

  • The garmin software did not work o this phone due to software seurity complications. The restarting problems are frequnt on this phone. The signal s very weak compared to sony ericsson or nkia phones. GPS signa and battery standby time is also weak, I had mentoned all this 8 weeks ago but my comments were removed, plus there are some users who are trying to convince the others that this phone is cost effective and practical, i think otherwise.

  • dear darren and all i550 users, i checked garmin and mapking about the gps software which could work with my i550w but with all the dozens of lists im confused which of these will work. navigon is too expensive 129 pounds! Is there an option of inserting a contact no. while making an sms? Next is that im getting a problem with messaging. my sms's are nearly 200 and im getting a phone advisory which says like i need to delete. i did but unless i restart i cant reply or make an sms. other than that, i dont experience the frequent restarting of this phone like other i550 owners.   • guys i confirm u all my i550 phone restarts alot its even restart in the middle of calls :S im sure of what im saying, it sometimes restarts for more than once like 2 or 3 times :( i really hate it and hate all samsung mobile phone now, plus the signal is very bad , i cant use untill now the WIFI i dont know why . I bought this phone from Kuwait and im using it in Egypt. i will resend it to Kuwait and take my money back . i will buy a SE phone for sure now

  • I bought this phone 15 days ago and i m pretty happy with this phone(one of the best from samsung) -high speed wifi and gps -superb sound quality and much louder than old samsung phones -all most all the symbian softwares worked -no hang up or restarts -very large and superb screen -navigation is bit weird but u will get used to it within 2 days -superb battery life lasts at least 2 days on average use This is one of the best samsung phone i have ever had..... cheers i550w!!!!!!

  • One step closer to WiFi on the I550!!! It seems the I550's PCB DOES have the WiFi hardware but its NC (Not Connected) to the main processor. Download the service manual at this site and take a look at page 41 where you'll see "All component of WiFi is NC". Now we need someone with soldering skills and a I550 to open up their I550 to connect the components!

  • I think too that this phone is not up to the expectations, in addition of not having any accessories in the market so far (even after 2 months of launching in Dubai), i had the phone hang-up situation and had to remove the battery and restart. The overall battery life is not good enough for mare than 36 hours (Compared to Nokia's 48-72 hours) of normal phone usage.

  • Hi! Im so dissepointed of this phone! I bought it but im gonna sell it right away! Im never ever going to buy this brand again. First of all my gps dont work at all! You cant whatch movies on it either (yes i tried lower resolution but it is way to hacky)realplayer is bad. I even installd divx player but it is way to hacking no matter which resolution i use. (maybe its dont have enough processor speed or memory?) The screen isnt bright enough even if it is on its max! Sound quality is bad during phone calls! The worst phone ever for me! Im sorry but i cant find anything good about it!:(

  • I just bought the phone a week ago in Malaysia. I am beginning to worry after reading all this posts here. I have no restart problems but I can't seem to use the GPS feature. I'm not sure if you need to register with a service provider in order to use it. As of now, whenever I try out the GPS I will get the "no connection" on my screen. Also, there is no NAVFON software in my phone but I have a NAVFON trial period card. So do I need to have a registration with a service provider in order to use the GPS function?

  • I agree that this phone restarts every now and then, it is happening with my i550. Even I have another problem, when the GSM signal is not available, the phone keeps on searching for the signal and it does not come out of that signal search even though I reach to an area with a strong GSM signal, I have to restart the phone to get GSm signal back. I took it to the agent in Dubai and they could not resolve anything, they told me that there was nothing wrong with the phone !!!! I even can not find any accessories for this phone.

  • I bought the i550w at Sunway on the 18th Feb 2008. I loved the phone as it had everything one can ask for in a Smart Phone. On the 19th Feb 2008, I discovered that the i550w re-started itself about 10x in a day and the GPS did not work and the NavFone software was not installed. I sent the phone back to FMG on the 19th Feb 2008. They kept the phone for 15 days and could not find a solution to the problem. I also bought the Anti-Virus from KaperSky for Symbian 60 3rd Edition and the software did not work. Thank god when I explained the situation to Kapersky, they gave me a refund USD 29.95. Finally today 5th March 2008, FMG told me that the GPS cannot work and they are refunding me RM1900 in 30 days time. Prior to this I also downloaded several .sisx applications but none could work with the i550w. Even the Samsung PC Suite which came with the phone was corrupted and I had to download it from samsung.com.my which only had the manual and the PcSuite Software. In short, its a nice phone but it cant work. It restarts every now and then, GPS doesnt work, WiFi signal not strong enough and battery life sucks. So, I dont think the i550w rocks. If you think it does, then good for you.

  • it has WiFi. FMG only carries that one with WiFI. Hence, we do not have i550 and i550w in malaysia

  • I just bought the i550W in Sunway and yes its already out in Malaysia. It has Wifi, and the display resolution is fantastic. The GPS is really cool and the Symbian software is far more superioi then of the Nokia's. I really love the phone. It has everything and for once Samsung did not miss out anything. The only problem I am facing now is that there are very small number of Symbian software out there that can work with this phone. I just purchased the Kapersky Mobile anti-virus for USD29.95 and it cant work with the i550. Now I dont know what to do with the software. No doubt the i550 is Symbian S60 3rd edition but none of the available software work on it. Why I dont know and even Samsung cant provide a solution or answer. In short, the phone rocks and I love it.

  • @JAckal First of all, we have to know if the Rumour is true or not, so somebody with knowledge has to open his i550 and has to take a closer look. If the rumour is true, than we will find a way to unlock the hardware, believe me, but first of all we have to find out, if the rumour is true!!

  • Where have you read these rumors about every i550 having WiFi hardware? If every i550 was WiFi then the BIG question is, how do we flash normal i550 phones so they have WiFi! I'm not sure if Samsung will have the same update system as Nokia with their Symbian phones. With my old Nokia E50 I can use Nokia Updater to flash it with the latest firmware.

  • well i take a look of samsung show room at kuwait airport,and i take a look at the last pease of i550,i got amazed of the desgin of the phone. 1-it comes with wifi,i sow the mark of the wifi at the top right corner on the device it self,olso i sow the setup for lan in the setings. 2-it comes withe 1gb memory card,and it can handel up to 4gb of memory. 3-it have also a realplayr. 4-for the gps,when you install it it will give u acount for 15 days to try it then u have to buy it. 5-the main screen have gogle search bar 6-the main menu is the same as nokia,but withe more butey icons than nokia,and suberb back ground

  • Just go to this Site download the User Manual for the sgh-i550, than read, you will see that it features wi-fi in some countries.

  • The only way to stop this speculation about the WIFI is if someone posts a photo or video of the WIFI working on a Samsung I550. Until then I won't believe any claims of WIFI on the I550. I have a I550 and it doesn't have 802.11b/g WIFI.
