Sonim XP1 - User Reviews

  • where i can buy this mobile?

  • Not sure where you live, but in the Netherlands I can have it send to Sonim for repairs.

  • Where can I get a new screen

  • Hi all I have had an XP1 for about 5years and it has been really impressive. However I would like to download the pc software and struggling to find it. If any of you do know where I can get it I would be most grateful . I have tried the Sonim site and various other sites but it gives an 404 error

  • get an old nokia!!!!!1

  • I have used this phone as a work phone for 3 years, I have had one previous service on this phone due to a fault when it fell from my pocket!! Now another, the battery wont charge. It is just out of 3 yr warranty so I'm stuffed, would cost $250/$300 to fix according to Sonim Australia, they suggested an upgrade to the xp 5300, no thanks. The ringtones and alarm have to the most annoying ever invented. I have had customers who have literally jumped when my phone has gone off. Also sometimes I would not recieve messages for 24 hours after the person called. That may be down to the network though? May suit some trades/occupations better than others.

  • Samsung B2100 Xplorer is cheaper and better than this particular model. Its got better durability and the battery last about a week.

  • At this price I could have sacrificed a few phones to Triton and still afforded a couple more for calls. The microphone is covered by a plastic membrane for water protection, but also blocks sound, so shouting into it at close range is needed in speakerphone mode. At the same time, the loudspeaker is the loudest I've heard on a GSM phone.

  • you're aware it's dust/drop/water RESTISTANT not PROOF. The day they invent an indestructable phone, I'll buy you one.

  • Junk. Waterproof for about 5 seconds submerged, dropped from second story to pavement caused button failure. Does not support claims. Junk. Exchanged for Samsung Immerse after only three days use. Junk, crap, garbage, false advertising.

  • I own a Sonim for slighly over a half year. I read many reviews on it's basic functions but it's amazing durability. I also read that a few people had problems right away but with an un-conditional warranty you simply get a phone back. It's pricey for not a lot of features but on the farm my old phones kept breaking and I was willing to sacrifice money and feature for durability. Ha! My screen broke within that first month and the microphone within a few more months. I sent it in and have now been waiting over a month for the replacement. I paid good money for supposed durability. I am very dissapointed with the product and services.

  • when i got thix XP1, after a week of not even dropping it, whne i phoned anybody, they would hear what i said exept twice, the second on about two seconds after the first, making it impossible for the other person to hear. i got a free replacement of a samsung, which is waaay better. do not recoment this phone, as the samsung is actually cheaper and a bit more rugged. i did to water tests (in a basin of water for 2 mins whilst being rung,) and it was fine, even though people say the work-after-a-day thing. poor for the technical, great for the rugged.

  • As I know, this phone designed by a Chinese Design house. Now they have launched a smartphone version named "Special Force". Reference: "Duralbe phone for Special Force? IP57 WinMobile phone leaks " (More detail visit

  • The Sonim XP1: A basic phone. But I love it. Texting is about 7 out of 10. Calls are 9 out of 10. Interface is 5 out of 10, but to tell the truth, I never use any of the nonsense applications on other phones. The first one I got I actually broke it, relatively easily, but I just got a new one with the 3-year warranty. This one is VERY durable. The only complaints I could think of: No full QWERTY keyboard, no camera, no MMS, and rather bulky. My friends compare it to their new up to date phones and laugh. Then I drive over it with my car and then ask if THEY can do that. It's an EPIC win. Phone deserves a 9 out of 10.

  • Hi, I bought an XP1 for my father who is an outdoors fan. Often out fishing and shooting in all weathers. The XP1 suits him down to the ground, it is unfettered with features, which for him is ideal, being of the older generation. Ring and earpiece are loud and clear. While it may have been superceded by the XP2 and 3 they are still available at very reasonable prices. With regards to syncing the phone, I have the phone connected by bluetooth to the PC and am very happily using Floats Mobile Agent to update contacts and manage the phone folders.

  • Speak to me Bruce

  • good phone

  • same thing happen to me, it died in a glass of water but i dried it and it was woeking again after a day. exept for the keys 4-0-5-6-7. xp3 definatelly stronger and more compleate in terms of functions.

  • i get my xp1 4 day ago, n i very happy of that, i often see you tube video about the toughest sonim, so i decide to test it, fist i put into a glas of water, oops the water coming in, n the phone is dead :D n i test it again to put it in the microwave, oops again, the phone is burn n smoke come out , wkwkwkwkwkkk n i lost my fist sonim in 1 day, i ask sonim center through email, n they say that xp 1 just have IP 57, so not for submersible :D but i still love it, n i want to buy xp3 Quest:D maybe its more tough than xp 1 n maybe xp 3 have more complete feature

  • I have a thing for well built products. Today so many manufacturers of goods build down to a price that there are very few genuinely good consumer goods - craftmanship in other words. People simply don't want to pay for quality. I guess probably because we live in a throw away society. So when I come across good things, I love it! You want the best earthmoving machine in the world? Buy a Caterpillar. You want the best drill in the world? Buy a Hilti. The toughest industrial cleaning equipment? Buy a Tennant. The most accurate watch in the world - as well as the toughest? A Tag or Rolex? No - buy a Casio Gshock Atomic Solar. The toughest cellphone in the world? Buy a Sonim. I did (and I own a Casio Gshock and Tennant as well and am saving for my Hilti.) But the story is about my Sonim. I look after my stuff generally pretty well, but I destroy cell phones - just the way it is. So I googled for the toughest phone in the world and ordered a shock proof, waterproof, dust proof Sonim online. As can happen, even with these tough buggers, I had a software glitch. But these guys have a 3 year unconditional guarantee. The thing is, the online shop I originally purchased it from, had in the meantime gone under and I had also moved countries so I emailed their international warranty guys with the details asking what I could do. They mailed me back saying a replacement phone had been despatched to me and would I send my one back to them when I had a chance via DHL on their account the number which was attached!!! Yes I do not apologise for this advert on behalf of them: If you want a phone, don't buy a toy. Buy a Sonim

  • I have had this phone for over a year - it has had a world of abuse from falling off abseil towers to accidently falling out my pocket in a waterlogged caving system and being lost for 5 hours till I rang it and it glowed up underwater! Mint phone - yes I am still trying to get wap to work as I have just changed to pay as you go but I will get there soon! Has anyone used the Sonim External Antenna For XP1 and how many extra bars of signal will it give? Ta Tom

  • When Chuck Norris isn't kicking ass, he's using this phone!

  • Its philips isnt'it? this phone is rocks... seems its ready for world war III.... he..he..he..

  • Its tougher than most phones, specially the cover. While most phones will shatter to pieces when dropped(but will still work even with broken casing), this phones body is hard to crack. Ive delibirately dipped my phone on water. A quick dunk does nothing, making it a stirring laddle will stop the phone but an overnight drying and a restart is all it need to go on again. A good basic phone. but a bit pricey

  • I received my new XP1 just yesterday. I admit I knew very little about the phone before ordering besides that it (suppsedly) is quide rugged. First surprise was when I removed the back flap to install my SIM card. The flap doesnt even have a sealing. I also noticed that the back flap is locked with a flimsy plastic screw that surely will not last long in case people as me need to chance the SIM card frequently. Starting to explore the phone functionaly, quite a few other things show. First it appears you cannot adjust the default ringer volumen within each mode of the phone. It is VERY loud. Neither does it appear as you can adjust the default level of either speakers, which means that you in 9 of 10 cases need to manually adjust the volumen when making or responding to a call. Another just enormous annying fault is that the phone cannot receive VCARDs from other phones. My wife sent me a VCARD for a friend. It comes up OK as a VCARD and the first time you press "option" with the card open, the menu has a function called "move to phone". Pressing it, the phone responds moved to phone, however looking through both SIM card memory and phone memory, the VCARD was never copied into neither phonebook. Massive issue... The phone is powered via a USB plug, and although my PC did recognise the phone as a Sonim XP1, there is absolutly no drivers available for the phone, hence NO WAY to transfer files to/from phone via cable. I after some fiddling made the bluetooth connection to work with my laptop, and transferred some audio and picture files. Both files went neatly into their respective folders under the "My Files" menu, called "Pictures" and "Sounds". However when in the phone setting menu, you can chose from 6 prestored wallpapers or one from your own "Pictures" folder. Regardless of how many pics you have uploaded, opening the pictures folder from the phone setting menu, just gives you the message that there's no images in folder, even though there is. Realising that the phone clearly has a lot of faults and probably isnt as rugged as it is said, and after unsuccesfully trying to find some info on all the issues I had on the web, I thought to myself that I better register the phone to have the 3y warranty activated (even though the ad says that the warranty is unconditinal, you HAVE to register the phone for warranty to cover). I went to their website and registered, but after giving all details and pressing "Enter", their website just responded "Thank You for Registering, your warranty is now activated", however neither did Sonim return a receipt by email or in any other way gave me a way to keep record of the activation. So in short: Mechanical design: poor Functionality: very limited Quality of phone functionality: piss poor Quality of online support: very poor As this phone costs about 6-8 times an ordinary phone with the same limited functionset, considered the numbers of flaws in the phone, and combined with very little or no hope of a software upgrade, this phone will just be a daily burden, UNLESS you ALWAYS use the phone in a very noisy environment, and NEVER use any clever features the phone allegedly should posses. I have been mobile phone user since mid 80' where they weighed about 5kg, and this I must say is the phone with the highest % of advertised functions doesnt work. Piss poor.

  • This phone is NOT what it's cracked up to be. We are on our third phone in under a year and our faults are electrical plugs, broken back screw, Faulty Battery, even when fully charged turning on and off without notice. No, we have not even subjected it to drops/water etc etc. Craig has had phones for years with no trouble - this is the pits and NOT wirth the money - not reliable and Crazy John's acknowledges the issues and just replaces them now without even really questioning the issues. Sorry, but never again. Waste of $$$$.

  • Sonim supply a plug in hands free. Try Expansys or Ebay. You should be able to buy one for around 8.00p.

  • Hi,please help me to set up the bluetooth on this phone, you can give me call on 0836545778 or email meon [email protected]. I want to use bluetooth in my car but battling to switch it on on the phone. Thanks Bruce

  • I couldn't live without this phone.

  • Try the b2100 simular in spec and price.

  • is it realy worth considering this phone or shoul i rather perchase something else.

  • We own an electrical contracting company and the biggest problem to us is that the phones get wet. We need 8 and had 1 on trial from vodafone NZ. We squirted it with a fine spray from a hand held water bottle. Then rang it. It rang, then stopped then turned off. The screen is full of condensation and it now does not work. Dont know if it was just a one off or if they all do this. Also we noted the reception was very echoey.

  • this is the strongest phone in the world

  • The phone is good but how do you load WAP

  • great i haven't charge the battery for 3 days and still going and i've been using the phone for the last 3 days

  • yes u can

  • yes it haves auto lock or u can set it for none auto lock

  • u need the xp1(bt) model for bluetooth

  • why my tmobile tzones internet wap says "connection failed" when its set correctly?

  • only issues i have with this phone is needs more ringtones and the speaker phone is not loud but the ringing is very loud and the ear speaker is also loud i have brought a external antenna with it looks good with it and even more stronger signal with the external antenna i luv my black color sonim xp1

  • what it is you don't understand?:) Why the phone was manufactured in China but bought in Sweden??:] check out ANYnthing you have at home...where was it made in?...:)) peace

  • I think it is only dual-band, so that's why it wouldn't work in America

  • why is the reception crap in the USA or is this a problem with the phone

  • The LM801 seems to have many of the rugged features of the Sonim phones plus a compass, altimeter, pressure barometer, torch and laser pointer among others. Is there anyone in the GSM Arena community that owns or has used this phone? Specs are here:

  • Hi, download PC-Tools from site

  • Can someone please tell me if you can get a plug-in handsfree for this handset? Or if it is compatible with any other handsfree. Cheers

  • SONIM XP1 can sync with computer.or how can i send my all contacts into the XP! except sim contacts.PLease [email protected]

  • this phone unti fire also?

  • gsmarena please feature sonim xp3 here asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I might be mistaken but I think that Sonim XP3 could be IP67...

  • How is the battery life of Sonim XP1?? Users please share..

  • I've had the XP1 and I loooooooove it! I sail all the time and my phone has survived accidentally falling into the water with me. This phone is *really* hardy. The vids on toughestphone.com seem unbelievable, but I know my phone would survive it. When my 3 year guarantee is up I'm totally getting another Sonim.

  • I like Sonim!! I'm so interested in the new XP3. I'd like to know more about the specifications of the phone.. I bet it will be really amazing with an IP57 rating and more shock toughness..

  • hi! i have just received my sonim xp1 black 2days ago! a friend of mine brough it from sweden! but i read 'made in china' printed on the box,on the charger,on the battery and on the phone????.No problem so far of course! but i just dont understand this! somebody help!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry I forgot the link

  • Check this baby out. The SONIM XP3 it truly is the toughest phone now with these specs.

  • I've had one for a few months, it really is a tough phone, even passed the pint of beer test and was still ringing. However the interface is poor, texting is as tough as the phone, plus if someone sends you a long (two message) text it deletes both of them without you being able to read it.

  • In that case the Sonim XP1 is still the choice for me.. But the problem is we don't have it yet in the Philippines...

  • Sonim XP1

  • So on paper the XP1 is the toughest phone on the market. if you count out the test the Gadget Show did a little while back. Being Sonim's first ever phone its not bad. Hopefully the second one will bridge the gap

  • Airo A25 Main points Weight 235 grams ENVIRONMENTAL Temperature -20 C to 50 C Drop 1.25 meter drop to concrete 26 times Shock 20g peak Vibration 0.001 g/Hz at 12.5 Hz, 0.034 g/Hz at 20-40 Hz, 0.0000057 g/Hz at 200 Hz, 1 hour/axis duration simulating 1,000 miles of transport Water 26.5 liters of water per 929 cm Humidity 95% for 48 hours

  • The M110, SE C702, XP1 & B2700 are all IP54 The A25 is IP67 but has a hefty price tag and windows mobile 6.0 PRO

  • IP certification

  • There is a new firmware coming out soon how do i update my XP1?

  • Is A25 as tough as Sonim XP1? IP certification is only for dust and water resistance I guess.. I like to know the actual toughness like the shock resistance

  • The A25 is IP67; it can go 1 metre under water. Cheapest I've seen it is 490.00

  • Anyone tried an Airo A25 ? Looks like its the ultamite kick ass phone that might survive a nuke (well not the EMP though).Anyway too pricy for me .

  • Does anybody know if Sonim are working on replacement for the XP1? Thinking of getting the B2700

  • No extermal antenna needed, unless you are too far from a signal ( there where other phones don't work anymore)

  • had it 2 weeks, tried it against sony eric c702 and must say sonim gave no trouble unlike c702 crap my veiw.gonna get another sonim black i think when funds suffice. sonim the best phone to date except nokia 6310i and 6250.sonim rocks. lets see if samsung b2700 any good/ xp1 xp1.

  • what are included in a brand new full box Sonim XP1? the plug-in external antena is include? if not, is it necessary to buy one? how is the normal receception (without the external antena) thank you, guys!

  • hi! im going to receive one sonim xp1 in 25 days! so excited! hehe..i wish it had FM radio. i dont need camera or music added in a tought phone! handle that job to Canon and Apple ipod!

  • i would buy one if it has a bigger screen, good camera,fm radio, torchlight, and more freebies in the retail box

  • just got yellow one today like it alot.needs to be quad band next version xp2/ c702 ok but this xp1 excellent. basic no noncence phone also sonim a led light please we like yer phone alot.

  • what in the world is this? looks like a deadly weapon of mass destruction. Am I right Brucie?

  • i love the sonim xp1 but iwill wait until they have dualsim and fm radio,video,3G,bleutooth and sofor.is good keep it up.

  • I just got mine 3 days ago.The sound clarity is owesome, even better then my Motorola V9.The speaker is so loud, that even at half volume I can bearly keep it near my ear.All aroound, good and tough phone.

  • It is a pity it doesn't have a better screen and it's too expensive, when the price goes lower maybe I'll buy one.

  • Well that's to be expected. It's the toughest phone but noone claimed it was invincible...

  • about time they marketed a phone for tradesmen.

  • I think this phone is brilliant. Its been in the bath, worked fine. its been in the shower, worked fine. And my small child knocked in the pond. This also worked fine!! I think its fair to say this is a water resistant phone!

  • looks like a nokia 1208

  • My supervisor drove forklift over the phone and the display shattered :)

  • I had purchased one of these. Rugged yes, but the sound quality was horrible. The membrabne used to isolate the speaker from water damage is way too think and it dramatically impairs sound quality. A major fault.

  • On the show they put them through 3 tests the first was on a lake for the wet test both did well. The second test, they chained them both to the back of two quad bikes and rode around a field. The Sonim was starting to show a few cracks the M110 was fine. The last test they drove a tractor over both phones. The M110 had a few scratches which you would expect after all the abuse it got and still worked. But the XP1s case completely failed and stopped working. I was quite upset and shocked that a fifty quid phone beat a 200 quid phone. I still keep telling my self that it was a faulty phone after all I have a Sonim XP1. Ive seen Sonims put in ovens, freezers, beer, water, milk, cement mixers. etc

  • I like this phone I'm sure it is tougher than Samsung M110

  • This phone was tested on the Gadget Show with the Samsung solid the Sonim broke and stopped working but the Samsung survived. Its not that tough. I was expecting the XP1 to kick ass but was very shocked when out of the two it cracked open and stopped working.

  • they shot this phone whit 4 diferent guns it survivad all exept the last (the 3 first guns breaks it but it dosent die compleatly until its shot whit the 4th gun)

  • i dont acualllty believe that this is unbreakable

  • Just got this phone. It is tough but : 1. There is no bluetooth 2. There is no sw with this phone. So no synchronization !!!!!

  • This phone will be great for me! My phone Sony Ericsson T280 is better then SONIM but sonim it's nice.

  • What is GSM talking about this handset is cheap for what it is only around 100 or less!!!

  • ill wait till they come up with a better version. i kinda like to have such a tough fone with a few more features of a mid range fone.

  • God I wish it had 850... I need a tank like this for work.

  • My rate for a low-range phone: 7 to design (It's kinda big) 8 to features (Fow a low-range phone, but the price is too expensive) 10 to performance (It's soooo tough!) 3 years of warranty! All we need to do is try to break it :)

  • i want this phone this would be great for me

  • Vodafone UK

  • my phone company works in 850 Mhz frecuency.. :( its a pitty..

  • this phone is the ultimate "tradie" phone. a lot of companies are offering this with a 3 year unconditional warranty! this means you can literally shoot, run over and completely destroy the phone and the warranty will replace it!

  • looks like Siemens's old ruggedized phone...

  • i work for a phone company, and this has proven to be the toughest phone ever made. who cares about features when your a tradesperson and you need your phone protected when on the job! they have run this over with a tractor, buried in cement, its splash proof, scratch proof, dust proof, can be dropped from heights, and has ringtones designed to be harsher so that they can be heard at a worksite. out of 10: at least a 12

  • That's the great thing about it, NO CAMERA, just a basic tradies phone with Bluetooth. This thing is indestructible, it has 3 years unconditional warranty, you break it they replace it. If you want a camera buy a K850i if you want tough phone, this is the one. The more features you add the fragile it becomes.

  • does this phone lock it self or do you have to lock it after evry time you use it?

  • What is this? absolutely no features. it may be shock resistant, but it is pathetic for the technology standards we have today. At least it could have a camera

  • Kind of looks like the Nokia and Samsung that are water/shock/dust resistant!

  • Why did you submerse your phone?

  • well, the phone is not ugly nor beautiful, those who claims its ugly actually never really had a hard and tough life... back here in singapore these types of phones is so hard to find.the only one i can remember is the siemens me45 which i believe is too durable to mention.but the siemens is an old model...

  • I've used this phone for a while, Yes, it's simple, but it's definately rugged, and in Australia, it's got a 3 year replacement unconditional warrantee. I accidentally dropped my first one into a timber shredder when I was cleaning my yard, went into the store (crazy Johns) with the bits, and they gave me a brand new one. Sweet!

  • so what, with the three year unconditional guarantee who cares if it dies when you try to imerse the phone

  • its tough but dang! its ugly

  • throwback 1990s!

  • There's a clear difference between Resistance and Water Proof. Resistance means it resists certain amount of water, like splashes or light submerge. And you know advertisements are always over exaggerated, unless you're too young to know that. This phone RESISTS water, dust and stuff, but it's not water, dust PROOF. Proof means it's completely safe to submerge it.

  • You know it s the most resistante phone in the world look this

  • Guys, stay cautious! it is tough phone but not water resistent! Those adverts with submersed XP1 seem to give totally wrong impression. Mine died just 10 seconds after repeating one of the adverts - phone in water! Even the manual warns about that, but who reads manuals, anyway!

  • Sonim is a Swedish phonemaker and JCB have only branded the phone.

  • The JCB is just a branded Sonim XP1, tough as old boots these phones!

  • this is the phone for ppl in mining

  • This is one of the toughest phones ever build for the mass market!

  • JCB Phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Isnt this just the JCB phone?

  • First post - yay!!! This looks like a really good hardy phone for anyone who needs one. Nice colour too!

  • 1st - I love this Phone
